Abstract
Helium nanodroplets ("HNDs") are widely used for forming tailor-made clusters and molecular complexes in a cold, transparent, and weakly interacting matrix. The characterization of embedded species by mass spectrometry is often complicated by the fragmentation and trapping of ions in the HNDs. Here, we systematically study fragment ion mass spectra of HND-aggregated water and oxygen clusters following their ionization by charge transfer ionization ("CTI") and Penning ionization ("PEI"). While the efficiency of PEI of embedded clusters is lower than for CTI by about factor 10, both the mean sizes of detected water clusters and the relative yields of unprotonated cluster ions are significantly larger, making PEI a "soft ionization" scheme. However, the tendency of ions to remain bound to HNDs leads to a reduced detection efficiency for large HNDs containing >104 helium atoms. These results are instrumental in determining optimal conditions for mass spectrometry and photoionization spectroscopy of molecular complexes and clusters aggregated in HNDs.

Abstract
We describe the design of and the first commissioning experiments with a newly constructed electrostatic storage ring named SAPHIRA (Storage Ring in Aarhus for PHoton-Ion Reaction Analysis). With an intense beam of Cu(-) at 4 keV, the storage ring is characterized in terms of the stored ion beam decay rate, the longitudinal spreading of an injected ion bunch, as well as the direct measurements of the transverse spatial distributions under different conditions of storage. The ion storage stability in SAPHIRA was investigated systematically in a selected region of its electrical configuration space.

Abstract
We present the results of a Coulomb explosion experiment that allows for the imaging of the rovibrational wave function of the metastable H2- ion. Our measurements confirm the predicted large internuclear separation of 6 a.u., and they show that the ion decays by autodetachment rather than by spontaneous dissociation. Imaging of the resulting H2 products reveals a large angular momentum of J = 25 ± 2, quantifying the rotation that leads to the metastability of this most fundamental molecular anion.

Abstract
Photofragmentation of the protonated water dimer H+(H2O)_{2}, a fundamental system both in aqueous solutions and gas-phase water clusters, has been studied at 13.8 nm using the Free Electron Laser FLASH in Hamburg. In a crossed-beam experiment using time-resolved, single-molecule fragment imaging, the two-body breakup into H2O++H3O+ was found as a prominent fragmentation channel with a kinetic energy release of up to 10 eV. This channel was observed with at least a similar yield as events with stronger fragmentation, producing protons together with neutral fragments and showing an absolute cross section of (0.5 ± 0.2) × 10(-18) cm2.

Abstract
Merging an HD+ beam with velocity matched electrons in a heavy ion storage ring we observed rapid cooling of the rotational excitations of the HD+ ions by superelastic collisions (SEC) with the electrons. The cooling process is well described using theoretical SEC rate coefficients obtained by combining the molecular R-matrix approach with the adiabatic nuclei rotation approximation. We verify the DeltaJ=-2 SEC rate coefficients, which are predicted to be dominant as opposed to the DeltaJ=-1 rates and to amount to (1-2)x10;{-6} cm;{3} s;{-1} for initial angular momentum states with J< or =7, to within 30%.

Abstract
We describe a bent electrostatic ion beam trap in which cluster ions of several keV kinetic energy can be stored on a V-shaped trajectory by means of an electrostatic deflector placed between two electrostatic mirrors. While maintaining all the advantages of its linear counterpart [Zajfman et al., Phys. Rev. A 55, R1577 (1997); Dahan et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 69, 76 (1998)], such as long storage times, straight segments, and a field-free region for merged or crossed beam experiments, the bent trap allows for simultaneous measurement of charged and neutral fragments and determination of the average kinetic energy released in the fragmentation. These unique properties of the bent trap are illustrated by first results concerning the competition between delayed fragmentation and ionization of Al(n) (-) clusters after irradiation by a short laser pulse.

Abstract
Molecular photofragmentation has been studied by event imaging on HeH+ ions at 32 nm (38.7 eV) in a fast ion beam crossed with the free-electron laser in Hamburg (FLASH), analyzing neutral He product directions and energies. Fragmentation into He(1snl,n > or = 2)+H+ was observed to yield significant photodissociation at 32 nm with an absolute cross section of (1.4+/-0.7) x 10(-18) cm2, releasing energies of 10-20 eV. A clear dominance of photodissociation perpendicular to the laser polarization was found in contrast to the excitation paths so far emphasized in theoretical studies.

Abstract
Measurements on the energetic structure of the dissociative recombination rate coefficient in the millielectronvolt range are described for H3+ ions produced in the lowest rotational levels by collisional cooling and stored as a fast beam in the magnetic storage ring TSR (Test Storage Ring). The observed resonant structure is consistent with that found previously at the storage ring facility CRYRING in Stockholm, Sweden; theoretical predictions yield good agreement on the overall size of the rate coefficient, but do not reproduce the detailed structure. First studies on the nuclear spin symmetry influencing the lowest level populations show a small effect different from the theoretical predictions. Heating processes in the residual gas and by collisions with energetic electrons, as well as cooling owing to interaction with cold electrons, were observed in long-time storage experiments, using the low-energy dissociative recombination rate coefficient as a probe, and their consistency with the recent cold H3+ measurements is discussed.

Abstract
The energy-resolved rate coefficient for the dissociative recombination (DR) of H(3)(+) with slow electrons has been measured by the storage-ring method using an ion beam produced from a radiofrequency multipole ion trap, employing buffer-gas cooling at 13 K. The electron energy spread of the merged-beams measurement is reduced to 500 microeV by using a cryogenic GaAs photocathode. This and a previous cold- measurement jointly confirm the capability of ion storage rings, with suitable ion sources, to store and investigate H(3)(+) in the two lowest, (J,G) = (1,1) and (1,0) rotational states prevailing also in cold interstellar matter. The use of para-H(2) in the ion source, expected to enhance para-H(3)(+) in the stored ion beam, is found to increase the DR rate coefficient at meV electron energies.

Abstract
We demonstrate that the dissociative recombination of D2H+ with low-energy electrons depends on the rotational energy of the molecular ion such that highly excited ions have a larger rate coefficient than colder ones. Observations on an ion beam continuously interacting with electrons at low relative velocity indicate that excited rotational levels are preferentially depleted which, in competition with radiative heating due to blackbody radiation, provides an opportunity for controlling the rotational temperature of stored molecules.

Abstract
We demonstrate that the synchronization effect observed [Pedersen et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 055001 (2001)]], when a bunch of ions oscillates between two mirrors in an electrostatic ion beam trap, can be explained as a negative mass instability. We derive simple necessary conditions for the existence of a regime in which this dispersionless behavior occurs and demonstrate that in this regime, the ion trap can be used as a high resolution mass spectrometer.

Abstract
Using a new type of ion trap, we demonstrate that the length of a packet of charged particles oscillating between two electrostatic mirrors will remain constant under special conditions. The effect can be understood in terms of phase synchronization, where, in a rather counterintuitive way, the repulsive Coulomb interaction between the ions actually holds the packet together. Application of this effect for mass spectrometry is discussed.

Abstract
Both atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) are involved in sodium and water homoeostasis in healthy humans. The plasma concentrations of the natriuretic peptides can be used to differentiate between dyspnoea of cardiac and pulmonary origin, and the degree of elevation of the peptide levels in the plasma in heart failure is a measure of the severity of the disease. However, the patterns of secretion of ANP and BNP are not clear either in healthy humans or in patients. The purpose of the present study was to test the hypotheses that both ANP and BNP are secreted in pulses in healthy humans, and that this phenomenon can be revealed by determination of ANP and BNP in peripheral venous blood samples. In 12 healthy subjects, blood samples were drawn every 2 min through an intravenously inserted plastic needle over a period of 2 h. Plasma concentrations of ANP and BNP were determined by RIAs, and the results were analysed for pulsatile behaviour by Fourier transformation. Pulsatile secretion of ANP was seen in 10 out of 12 subjects [nu=0.028 min(-1) (median; range 0.013-0.047 min(-1)), i.e. a pulse of ANP with an interval of 36 min (range 21-77 min)]. Pulsatile secretion of BNP was seen in nine out of 12 patients [nu=0. 021 min(-1) (range 0.013-0.042 min(-1)), i.e. a pulse of BNP with an interval of 48 min (range 24-77 min)]. The main conclusion is that the secretion patterns of both ANP and BNP are pulsatile in most healthy humans. Consequently, it is important to study whether pulsatile secretion also occurs in heart failure in order to obtain the most informative predictive values both in the differential diagnosis of dyspnoea and in the evaluation of the severity of the disease.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to validate the results of diagnostic pure-tone audiometry performed in a typical practice setting by comparing with test results obtained in a standardized audiological setting in accordance with the ISO standards. In a single-blinded crossover design, 119 persons were tested (0.25-8 kHz) in both settings. The mean deviations as a function of frequency were in the order of less than 2 dB (0.5-4 kHz) and otherwise up to 4 dB; the practice setting representing the poorer thresholds. The validity of the practice audiometry at three criteria of hearing impairment (0.5-4 kHz) was characterized by sensitivity (82-100%), specificity (95-99%); positive predictive values (75-90%) and negative predictive values (98-100%) focusing on the better ear. It is concluded that pure-tone audiometry of appropriate validity can be performed in general practice and that it is useful in selecting patients with no need of further audiological examination. Guidelines are needed.

Abstract
Necrotizing external otitis is a life-threatening condition that still causes therapeutic problems. A retrospective analysis of 22 patients who were all treated with a short standard course of aminoglycoside and beta-lactam antibiotic with through local debridement was carried out; 50% (11/22) had diabetes mellitus, and all had a positive culture of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The frequency of recurrence was 14% (3/22), and 95% (21/22) were eventually cured. The treatment course lasted 17 days on average. Side effects caused by the drug treatment were seen in 14% (3/22), but they were mild and transient consisting of a reversible increase of the serum creatinine level. It was concluded that the treatment was short, efficient, safe, and as successful as treatment with quinolones or third-generation cephalosporins which has been reported during the past years. In our opinion, therefore, these drugs should be reserved for cases of treatment failure, development of resistance, or side effects.

Abstract
Quantitative radiohistochemistry was utilized to study alterations of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and benzodiazepine receptors in the kindling model of epilepsy. The radioligands used for GABA and benzodiazepine receptors were [3H] muscimol and [3H]flunitrazepam, respectively. GABA receptor binding was increased by 22% in fascia dentata of the hippocampal formation but not in neocortex or substantia nigra of kindled rats. Within fascia dentata, GABA receptor binding was increased to an equivalent extent in stratum granulosum and throughout stratum moleculare; no increase was found in dentate hilus or stratum lacunosummoleculare or stratum radiatum of CA1. The increased binding was present at 24 hr but not at 28 days after the last kindled seizure. The direction, anatomic distribution, and time course of the increased GABA receptor binding were paralleled by increased benzodiazepine receptor binding. Unexpectedly, GABA receptor-mediated enhancement of benzodiazepine receptor binding was slightly attenuated in fascia dentata of kindled compared to control rats. The anatomic distribution of the increased GABA receptor binding is consistent with a localization to somata and dendritic trees of dentate granule cells. We suggest that increased GABA and benzodiazepine receptor binding may contribute to enhanced inhibition of dentate granule cells demonstrated electrophysiologically in kindled animals.

Abstract
The initial rate of inactivation of T4 phage by solutions of [Pt(NH3)2Cl2], [PtenCl2] and [Pten(H2O)2] (NO3)2 at fixed values of pH is strongly reduced by phosphate buffer, slightly reduced by acetate buffer and apparently not influenced by bis(2-hydroxyethyl)aminotris(hydroxymethyl)methane (BIS-Tris) buffer and HEPES buffer. The phosphate abolishes the antiphage activity of the platinum complexes probably by some sort of complex formation. This together with dimerization reactions qualitatively explains the tailing off of the phage inactivation rate. High concentrations of NaNO3 as the salt medium give increased phage inactivation rates, which are also strongly pH-dependent.

Abstract
A randomized double-blind trial of 152 men with gonococcal urethritis compared the therapeutic efficacy of erythromycin estolate and erythromycin base. Twenty-one of 86 (24%) men treated with the estolate and 15 of 66 (23%) treated with the base had recurrent or persistent gonococcal infection when seen after a 9-g course of erythromycin. The serum erythromycin activity among estolate-treated patients (3.57 +/- 0.84 microgram/ml) was nearly twice that for base-treated patients (1.76 +/- 0.80 microgram/ml). Our findings do not support routine use of erythromycin for treatment of pregnant, penicillin-allergic patients.
