Single step synthesis of WO3 nanoparticles by wire explosion process and its photocatalytic behaviour

Tungsten (W) wires are exploded in oxygen ambience to get tungsten oxide (WO3) nanoparticles (NPs). Energy stored in the capacitors (EC) is used to overcome the sublimation energy of wire. Energy ratio (K, ratio of EC and sublimation energy) and oxygen pressure (P) are two control parameters for the particle phase and morphology in the wire explosion process. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns confirmed the partial oxidation of W for low values of K. For K = 2, oxidation increases with increase in P. For K = 10, complete oxidation was achieved irrespective of P. Particles are spherical in shape as observed from scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) micrographs. Particle size follows a log-normal distribution with a least mean size of 24.1 nm. UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) was used to measure the absorbance of NPs (complete WO3 with least mean size) for band gap measurement. The band gap was found to be 2.92 eV (visible region). NPs are used as photocatalyst to degrade aqueous solution of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. 500 mg l−1 of WO3 NPs were optimum to degrade 10 mg l−1 MB in 120 min.

Understanding the surface condition of gamma irradiated epoxy alumina nanocomposites adopting wavelets and fractal technique

The influence of alumina nanofiller and gamma irradiation on the surface potential variation of epoxy-alumina nanocomposites was investigated. The surface potential decay rate of nanocomposites has increased and the trap depth decreased with alumina nanoparticles addition to the matrix as well as upon exposure to gamma irradiation, Surface roughness was estimated using the wavelets and fractal technique. Daubechies wavelet of order 4 (db4) wavelet was chosen as the most suitable mother wavelet for surface roughness measurement. Multi resolution signal decomposition (MRSD) analysis of surface profile has revealed that with increasing wt% of alumina nanofiller in the nanocomposites, reduction in surface roughness of nanocomposites was observed. Upon gamma irradiation, the surface roughness factor at each level of MRSD has increased marginally. Fractal dimension and lacunarity were calculated for unaged and gamma ray irradiated samples and it exhibits inverse correlation.

Dynamical aspects of nanoparticle formation by wire explosion process

Copper nanoparticles (NPs) were produced by wire explosion process (WEP) and it was noted that the amount of energy (E) deposited on the wire and the ambient pressure play a major role on the size of particles formed. Dynamic diffusion and condensation processes of NPs formation by WEP were modelled. Calculations of critical size of embryo, activation energy and nucleation rate of the formation of NPs in WEP were made considering classical homogeneous nucleation theory. Decrease in critical size of nuclei and activation energy, increase in nucleation rate with high E (540 J) and low operating pressure (10 kPa) confirm the formation of small size NPs (26 nm). Different cooling rates due to unsymmetrical shape of the vapour cloud has been identified as the cause for generating mixed particle sizes. The qualitative analysis conducted in this work validates the obtained experimental results and can be used as a design tool for industrial apparatus to produce NPs in bulk.

Investigation of surface strain by digital image correlation and charge trap characteristics of epoxy alumina nanocomposites

Epoxy alumina nanocomposites were fabricated through shear mixing of alumina nanoparticles in to epoxy resin under optimum process conditions for its potential application as insulator in transformer. The fundamental insight in to the influence of ageing of nanocomposite insulator due to its continuous exposure to UV irradiation and water in terms of their charge trap characteristics was explored. The surface potential decay and strain variation of nanocomposite samples were measured by using Electrostatic voltmeter and Digital Image Correlation technique (DIC), respectively. Diffusion of water into epoxy alumina nanocomposite is less compared with pure epoxy resin. It has been observed that surface potential decay rate and trap depth have shown increasing and decreasing trend, respectively, with the addition of alumina nanoparticles in to epoxy resin. The UV and water aged nanocomposites exhibited a decreasing trend of surface potential decay rate and the governing reasons could be due to surface damage causing increase in deep trap formation. The tensile strength and stiffness of the samples have increased with the addition of alumina nanoparticles in to the epoxy resin. It could be due to the better bonding of alumina particles with epoxy resin. The surface strain induced in to the sample during tensile loading and the surface potential decay rate of nanocomposite has shown a direct correlation, as observed in the present work.

High resolution NMR measurements using a 400MHz NMR with an (RE)Ba2Cu3O7-x high-temperature superconducting inner coil: Towards a compact super-high-field NMR

Use of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) inner coils in combination with conventional low-temperature superconducting (LTS) outer coils for an NMR magnet, i.e. a LTS/HTS NMR magnet, is a suitable option to realize a high-resolution NMR spectrometer with operating frequency >1GHz. From the standpoint of creating a compact magnet, (RE: Rare earth) Ba2Cu3O7-x (REBCO) HTS inner coils which can tolerate a strong hoop stress caused by a Lorentz force are preferred. However, in our previous work on a first-generation 400MHz LTS/REBCO NMR magnet, the NMR resolution and sensitivity were about ten times worse than that of a conventional LTS NMR magnet. The result was caused by a large field inhomogeneity in the REBCO coil itself and the shielding effect of a screening current induced in that coil. In the present paper, we describe the operation of a modified 400MHz LTS/REBCO NMR magnet with an advanced field compensation technology using a combination of novel ferromagnetic shimming and an appropriate procedure for NMR spectrum line shape optimization. We succeeded in obtaining a good NMR line shape and 2D NOESY spectrum for a lysozyme aqueous sample. We believe that this technology is indispensable for the realization of a compact super-high-field high-resolution NMR.

Operation of a 400MHz NMR magnet using a (RE:Rare Earth)Ba2Cu3O7-x high-temperature superconducting coil: Towards an ultra-compact super-high field NMR spectrometer operated beyond 1GHz

High-temperature superconductors (HTS) are the key technology to achieve super-high magnetic field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers with an operating frequency far beyond 1GHz (23.5T). (RE)Ba₂Cu₃O_7-x (REBCO, RE: rare earth) conductors have an advantage over Bi₂Sr₂Ca₂Cu₃O_10-x (Bi-2223) and Bi₂Sr₂CaCu₂O_8-x (Bi-2212) conductors in that they have very high tensile strengths and tolerate strong electromagnetic hoop stress, thereby having the potential to act as an ultra-compact super-high field NMR magnet. As a first step, we developed the world's first NMR magnet comprising an inner REBCO coil and outer low-temperature superconducting (LTS) coils. The magnet was successfully charged without degradation and mainly operated at 400MHz (9.39T). Technical problems for the NMR magnet due to screening current in the REBCO coil were clarified and solved as follows: (i) A remarkable temporal drift of the central magnetic field was suppressed by a current sweep reversal method utilizing ∼10% of the peak current. (ii) A Z2 field error harmonic of the main coil cannot be compensated by an outer correction coil and therefore an additional ferromagnetic shim was used. (iii) Large tesseral harmonics emerged that could not be corrected by cryoshim coils. Due to those harmonics, the resolution and sensitivity of NMR spectra are ten-fold lower than those for a conventional LTS NMR magnet. As a result, a HSQC spectrum could be achieved for a protein sample, while a NOESY spectrum could not be obtained. An ultra-compact 1.2GHz NMR magnet could be realized if we effectively take advantage of REBCO conductors, although this will require further research to suppress the effect of the screening current.

Nanomechanical and optical properties of yttrium thin films by magnetron sputtering

This Letter reports on nanomechanical and optical properties of yttrium thin films deposited on an Si (100) wafer. Elemental depth profiling by a secondary ion mass spectrometer revealed absence of formation of yttrium hydride, both on the surface and beneath. The optical properties were investigated by spectroscopic ellipsometry, and the refractive indices extracted after suitable modeling were found to be 2.51 at 546 nm. Hardness and elastic modulus of these films were found to be 7 and 142 GPa, respectively. These studies indicate that yttrium thin films are suitable for x-ray mirrors, photocathode emitters in e-beam lithography, electron microscopes, and free-electron lasers.

Deformation and Toughness of α-Silicon Nitride Single Crystals

Vickers and Knoop indentation methods were used to determine the deformation behavior and fracture toughness of single crystal α-Si3N4at room temperature. The tests were performed on (0001), (1100) and (1120) faces; both hardness and toughness values were found to be independent of orientation within statistical variations. Thus, the mechanical properties of silicon nitride are essentially isotropic at room temperature.

Single crystals of α-Si3N4were also compressed at 1760 and 1820°C at a strain rate of The sample tested at 1760°C showed yielding at a stress of 200MPa but it fractured before indicating a significant amount of plastic deformation. On the other hand, the sample compressed at 1820°C deformed to a strain of 2.7% at a stress of 4OMPa before fracturing. A significant density of dislocations was observed by transmission electron microscopy. From conventional g.b analysis, the Burgers vector of the dislocations was determined to be 1/3<1120>. From the line direction of the dislocations, the primary slip system of α-Si3N4is determined to be {1101}<1120>.

Crystal Structure of Endohedral Metallofullerene La@C82

Since the success of synthesis the molecular structure of the endohedral metallofullerene is a most interesting subject in relation to the electronic state of metal and carbon cage. Highquality crystals of endohedral metallofullerene La@C82 have been synthesized by the arc discharge and HPLC method. The x-ray powder diffraction and the precession photograph of a tiny single crystal have revealed the cubic structure with the space group I43d and the lattice constant ao = 25.72 ± 0.007 Å at room temperature. The structure is characterized by the molecular arrangement in which the molecules align in the [111] direction with the molecular axis orienting in the same [111] direction; this structure suggests the existence of a dipole interaction between the molecules. The metal position in the cage is also discussed on the basis of an ellipsoidal model of molecule.

Pulsed wire discharge apparatus for mass production of copper nanopowders

A pulsed wire discharge (PWD) apparatus for the mass production of nanopowders has been developed. The apparatus has a continuous wire feeder, which is operated in synchronization with a discharging circuit. The apparatus is designed for operation at a maximum repetition rate of 1.4 Hz at a stored energy of 160 J. In the present study, Cu nanopowder was synthesized using the PWD apparatus and the performance of the apparatus was examined. Cu nanopowder of 2.0 g quantity was prepared in N(2) gas at 100 kPa for 90 s. The particle size distribution of the Cu nanopowder was analyzed by transmission electron microscopy and the mean surface diameter was determined to be 65 nm. The ratio of the production mass of the powder to input energy was 362 g/kW h.

Anomalous quasiparticle lifetime and strong electron-phonon coupling in graphite

We have performed ultrahigh-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on high-quality single crystals of graphite to elucidate the character of low-energy excitations. We found evidence for a well-defined quasiparticle (QP) peak in the close vicinity of the Fermi level comparable to the nodal QP in high-T(c) cuprates, together with the mass renormalization of the band at an extremely narrow momentum region around the K(H) point. Analysis of the QP lifetime demonstrates the presence of strong electron-phonon coupling and linear energy dependence of the QP scattering rate indicative of a marked deviation from the conventional Fermi-liquid theory.

[The frequency of Streptococcus pneumoniae strains and sensitivity surveillance for several antibiotics in Gifu Prefecture]

The frequency and the antibacterial sensitivity of Streptococcus pneumoniae strains isolated from 6 key hospitals (in 5 areas) and 1 otorhinolaryngology clinic in Gifu Prefecture from February to March, 1999, were investigated with several antibiotics. A total of 128 strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae were isolated throughout the study: 47 strains (36.7%) of penicillin-susceptible S. pneumoniae (PSSP), 51 strains (39.8%) of penicillin-intermediate S. pneumoniae (PISP), and 30 strains (23.4%) of penicillin-resistant S. pneumoniae (PRSP); the resistant bacteria being relatively prominent. In these hospitals, PSSP was isolated by 38.8% in all the key hospitals and by 30% in the otolaryngology clinic with almost no discernible difference. PISP was isolated by 63.3%, higher in the otolaryngology clinic and PRSP by 28.6%, higher in the key hospitals conversely. The MIC90s in PISP and PRSP were determined with the antibiotics. In result, only cefditoren (CDTR) showed favorable antibacterial activities with the MIC90 of 0.78 microgram/ml among penicillins or oral cephems. The MIC90s of carbapenems such as imipenem (IPM), meropenem (MEPM), and panipenem (PAPM) were less than 0.39 microgram/ml; particularly, PAPM showed the highest antibacterial activities. Among new quinolones such as tosufloxacin (TFLX), levofloxacin (LVFX), sparfloxacin (SPFX), and ciprofloxacin (CPFX), TFLX showed the highest antibacterial activities with the MIC90 of 0.39 microgram/ml. Other agents showed very low antibacterial activities as the MIC90s were 25 micrograms/ml in minocycline (MINO) and more than 100 micrograms/ml in clarithromycin (CAM) and clindamycin (CLDM).

Coping skills in Japanese women with eating disorders

The aim of this study was to investigate coping skills in the different types of eating disorders in Japan. Groups of patients with eating disorders diagnosed with DSM-IV and 22 controls were studied. Coping skills were assessed with the Stress Coping Inventory. The mean Problem-focused coping score tended to be lower in the bulimia nervosa purging-type group (n = 20) than in the control group. The former group and the bulimia nervosa nonpurging-type group (n = 6) used significantly less planful problem solving and less positive reappraisal coping than the control group, while the anorexia nervosa restricting-type group of 11 tended to use less positive reappraisal, and the anorexia nervosa binge-eating/purging-type (n = 11) tended to use less planful problem solving and less positive reappraisal than the control group. As some uses of coping skills by patients with eating disorders were lower than those of the control group, developing coping skills may be useful in treatment for eating disorders in Japan.

Synchrotron radiation X-ray powder diffractometer with a cylindrical imaging plate

A synchrotron radiation X-ray powder diffractometer for samples of very small amount has been developed to collect high-quality diffraction patterns under extreme conditions,i.e.at low temperature and/or high pressure. A new cylindrical imaging plate (CIP) is used as a detector, in addition to a conventional flat-type imaging plate (FIP). By using the CIP system, the diffraction data in a diffraction angle range −44 ≤ 2θ ≤ 122° are collected with a dynamic range of about 106. The alignment of the diffractometer, measurement and analysis are automatically operated by a workstation. A performance test shows that the CIP system has spatial resolution of about 0.07° with a dynamic range of 106. The diffraction pattern of a standard sample of Si measured by the CIP system has high quality; the refinement of the structure reachesRw= 3.68% even in the case of a small amount of sample (about 2 µg) and a short exposure time (60 s). Examples of experiments at low temperatures under ambient and high pressures are also presented.

Psychosocial factors influencing the short-term outcome of antithyroid drug therapy in Graves' disease

OBJECTIVE

Although psychological stress and smoking have been proposed as factors contributing to Graves' disease, their independent roles in the course of this disease have not been determined. We assessed the association between the course of Graves' disease and psychosocial factors by using multivariate analysis.

METHODS

We investigated the association between the short-term outcome of Graves' disease (assessed 12 months after the beginning of antithyroid drug therapy) and stressful life events, daily hassles, smoking, drinking habits, coping skills, and social support (before and 6 months after beginning therapy) in 230 patients (182 women and 48 men) with newly diagnosed Graves' disease, using a logistic regression model.

RESULTS

After adjustment for smoking, coping skills, and thyroid function, daily hassles scores in women at 6 months after beginning therapy were significantly associated with a hyperthyroid state 12 months after beginning therapy. The relative risk was 3.9 for women with higher daily hassles scores compared with women with lower daily hassles scores (95% confidence interval, 1.1 to 13.2; p < .05). Smoking was not significantly associated with a hyperthyroid state 12 months after beginning therapy in either women or men.

CONCLUSIONS

Chronic psychological stress is associated with the course of Graves' disease in women.

Stressful life events and smoking were associated with Graves' disease in women, but not in men

OBJECTIVE

Although psychological stress and smoking have been proposed as contributing factors to Graves' disease, their independent roles in the pathogenesis of this disease have not been determined. We assessed the association between Graves' disease and psychological stress and smoking by using multivariate analysis.

METHODS

By a matched case-control method, we investigated the association between Graves' disease and stressful life events, daily hassles, smoking, drinking habits, coping skills, and social support in 228 patients (182 women and 46 men) with newly diagnosed Graves' disease; we used the conditional maximum likelihood method.

RESULTS

After data were adjusted for daily hassles, smoking, drinking habits, social support, and coping skills, we found that stressful life events were significantly associated with the risk of Graves' disease in women. The relative risk was 7.7 for women with the highest stress score compared with women with the lowest stress score (95% confidence interval, 2.2 to 27, p for trend < .001). Smoking was also independently associated with the risk of Graves' disease in women. The relative risk for women with the highest number group compared with women with the lowest number group for smoking cigarettes was 5.1 (95% confidence interval, 1.0 to 27; p for trend < .001). These factors were not significantly associated with Graves' disease in men.

CONCLUSIONS

Psychological stress and smoking were associated with Graves' disease in women, but not in men.

Comparison of gastric lesions in dogs and cats with and without gastric spiral organisms

OBJECTIVES

To determine prevalence of gastric spiral organisms (GSO) in dogs and cats that were clinically normal or had primary gastrointestinal disease and to compare histologic lesions of the stomach in dogs and cats with and without GSO.

ANIMALS

21 dogs and 10 cats that were clinically normal and 56 dogs and 33 cats with gastrointestinal disease.

DESIGN

Case-control study.

RESULTS

Unevenness of the gastric mucosal surface was detected, using endoscopic techniques in 20 and 25% of clinically normal and abnormal dogs, respectively. On histologic examination, GSO were located on the mucosal surface within or beneath the mucus, in gastric pits, and within glandular lumina in 86 and 90% of clinically normal dogs and cats, respectively, and in 61 and 64% of clinically abnormal dogs and cats, respectively. Prevalence of GSO infection in dogs and cats that were clinically abnormal was not higher than in those that were clinically normal. Infection was detected in stomachs of > 60% of dogs and cats 1 year old or less. Helicobacter pylori was not isolated from any specimen; however, specimens in which GSO were found had positive results on a urease test.

CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS

Prevalence of GSO infection was high in clinically normal and abnormal dogs and cats, some of which were young. This should be considered during assessment of clinically normal animals with GSO as they can be a potential reservoir for infection in human beings.

EEG-driven photic stimulation effect on plasma cortisol and beta-endorphin

The effect of EEG-driven photic stimulation on stress-related endocrine function was studied. Subjects were 16 healthy males divided into a photic stimulation group (n = 8) and a control group (n = 8). Electrodermal and emotional lability measures were assessed by nonspecific skin conductance response and the Maudsley Personality Inventory, respectively. Plasma cortisol and beta-endorphin concentrations were measured both before and after EEG-driven photic stimulation as well as the resting condition. Subjects with electrodermal, emotional, or both lability showed comparable decreases of plasma beta-endorphin on photic stimulation as did the stable subjects. Under resting control conditions, however, they showed significant increases of beta-endorphin compared to both stable subjects as well as the photic stimulation condition. In addition, labile subjects showed significant alpha enhancement on photic stimulation compared to stable subjects and to the resting control condition. The data suggest that increases of plasma beta-endorphin in labile control subjects may denote a stress response to the conditions of these experiments, and that any decrease by EEG-driven photic stimulation may indicate a reduction of responsiveness to an acute stress.

Clinical effects of blood pressure biofeedback treatment on hypertension by auto-shaping

OBJECTIVE

Although biofeedback has been reported to be efficacious in the treatment of hypertension, the degree of response has varied. This study investigated the mechanisms of blood pressure reduction by biofeedback.

METHOD

Thirty outpatients with essential hypertension (10 men and 20 women) aged 38 to 65 years were studied. Subjects were randomly assigned to group A or B. Subjects in group A underwent biofeedback treatment once a week for a total of four sessions. Those in group B self-monitored their blood pressure during the sessions as the control period and later underwent the same biofeedback treatment.

RESULTS

Blood pressure measured by doctor was reduced by 17 +/- 18/8 +/- 7 (p < .01) and elevation of pressure induced by mental stress testing was suppressed by 8 +/- 9 (p < .05)/4 +/- 8 during the treatment period in group A (mm Hg). In group B, both blood pressure measured by doctor and elevation of pressure by mental stress testing remained unchanged during the control period and they were later suppressed by 20 +/- 15/9 +/- 7 (p < .01) and 11 +/- 10(p < .05)/5 +/- 9 by the biofeedback treatment. Self-monitored pressure in both groups tended to decrease by the biofeedback treatment. Systolic and diastolic pressures as well as pulse rate decreased, skin temperature increased, and alpha-wave amplitude on electroencephalography increased during the therapy (p < .05).

CONCLUSION

This treatment was effective in suppressing the pressor response to stress. Patients whose blood pressure increases with stress may be suited for biofeedback intervention.

Hemodynamic and endocrine responsiveness to mental arithmetic task and mirror drawing test in patients with essential hypertension

To evaluate the reactivity to psychological stress in patients with essential hypertension we investigated hemodynamic and endocrinologic changes during a mental arithmetic task (MAT) and a mirror drawing test (MDT) in 10 hypertensive subjects. Hemodynamic changes were assessed continuously using an ambulatory radionuclide cardiac detector. There were significant increases in systolic blood pressure (deltaSBP: +37.8 +/- 11.1 and +41.0 +/- 9.4 mm Hg during MAT and MDT, respectively, P < .01) and diastolic blood pressure (deltaDBP: +17.5 +/- 3.1 and +21.2 +/- 3.9 mm Hg, P < .01) and in heart rate (deltaHR: +17.1 +/- 5.3 and +12.5 +/- 2.9 beats/min, P < .01) during both tasks in association with an increase in cardiac output (CO). The plasma levels of norepinephrine and epinephrine increased during both the MAT (deltaNE: +0.074 +/- 0.022 ng/mL, P < .01; deltaEP: +0.068 +/- 0.025 ng/mL, P < .01) and the MDT (deltaNE: +0.067 +/- 0.034 ng/mL, P < .01; deltaEP: +0.030 +/- 0.011 ng/mL, .05 < P < .1). Although the deltaNE was similar in response to the MAT and MDT, the deltaEP during the MDT tended to be less than half the deltaEP during the MAT (.05 < P < .10). The deltaEP was positively correlated with the deltaDBP and the deltaCO during both tasks and with the deltaSBP and the deltaHR during the MAT. These findings suggest that MAT- and MDT-induced increases in BP were attributable mainly to an increase in CO, possibly as the result of stimulation of the sympathoadrenomedullary system. However, the sympathoadrenomedullary system appeared to be more closely associated with the hemodynamic responses during the MAT than during the MDT.

Treatment of a depressive disorder patient with EEG-driven photic stimulation

This study examined the effects of electroencephalographic- (EEG-) driven photic stimulation on a case of depressive disorder, as measured by a psychometric test of mood states, EEG parameters, and several autonomic indices. The EEG-driven photic stimulation enhances the alpha rhythm of brain waves using photic signals, the brightness of which is modulated by a subject's own alpha rhythm. The patient was a 37-year-old businessman, who was treated for depression with medication during the 13 months prior to his first visit to our hospital. He underwent two sets of inpatient treatment sessions, comprising first 16 and then 18 treatment sessions. The treatments brought about the following changes: an improvement in general mood state, alpha rhythm increase, cardiac parasympathetic suppression, and increased skin conductance level. In addition, significant correlations between alpha rhythm increase and cardiac parasympathetic suppression or cardiac sympathetic predominance were observed with each inpatient treatment. Significant correlations between alpha rhythm increase, cardiac parasympathetic suppression, or cardiac sympathetic predominance and the improvement of general mood state were also observed. Thus, from these observations, it was concluded that the alpha enhancement induced by EEG-driven photic stimulation produced an improvement in the patient's depressive symptomatology connected with cardiac parasympathetic suppression and sympathetic predominance.

Comparison of gastric and duodenal lesions in dogs and cats with and without lymphocytic-plasmacytic enteritis

OBJECTIVE--To compare histologic lesions in the stomach and duodenum of dogs and cats with and without lymphocytic-plasmacytic enteritis (LPE). DESIGN--Case-control study. ANIMALS--20 clinically normal dogs, 40 dogs with LPE, 10 clinically normal cats, and 20 cats with LPE. RESULTS--Unevenness of the mucosal surface was detected in the stomach of 4 of the 20 (20%) clinically normal dogs and 10 of the 40 (25%) dogs with LPE. Mucosal friability was detected in the duodenum of 16 (40%) of the dogs with LPE and 10 of the 20 (50%) cats with LPE. Histologically, clinically normal dogs and dogs with LPE had various degrees of fibrosis in the gastric lamina propria. All of the clinically normal cats and the cats with LPE had slight gastric fibrosis. Clinically normal cats had infiltrates of inflammatory cells similar to those seen in the clinically normal dogs. Significantly more plasma cells and lymphocytes were seen in the duodenal lamina propria of dogs and cats with LPE than in the duodenal lamina propria of clinically normal animals. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS--LPE should be diagnosed by counting the number of inflammatory cells in the duodenal lamina propria and then comparing that number with the number seen in clinically normal animals.

Epidemiological data on anorexia nervosa in Japan

An epidemiological survey on anorexia nervosa was performed in Japanese hospitals in 1985 and 1992 using a questionnaire. The reported number of patients with anorexia nervosa was 2391 from 732 institutions. From these data, the total number of anorexia nervosa patients treated in 1985 in Japanese hospitals was estimated to be about 3500-4500. In 1992, the reported number of patients with AN was 2247. The total number of AN patients treated in 1992 was estimated to be about 4500-4600, which is a little higher than that in 1985 (3500-4500). The prevalence was 3.6-4.5 per 100000 among the general population, 6.3-9.7 per 10(5) among the female population, and 25.2-30.7 per 10(5) among the 13-29 year-old female population.

Relationship of parental bonding to child abuse and dissociation in eating disorders in Japan

Parental bonding patterns were studied in 52 female Japanese eating disorder outpatients with and without histories of sexual or physical abuse and with dissociation. Instruments included the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI), the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) and the Dissociative Disorders Interview Schedule (DDIS). Those with physical abuse history, but not sexual abuse history, had significantly different parental bonding scores and higher DES scores compared with subjects without physical abuse. DES scores and PBI scores were not correlated. Although the PBI was useful in discriminating between those with and those without abuse histories, it did not detect differences in degree of dissociation. Lack of association of sexual abuse to PBI and DES scores may have been due to mild abuse.

Dissociation and child abuse histories in an eating disorder cohort in Japan

Dissociation and childhood abuse were studied in female eating disorder outpatients in Japan. A self-report version of the Dissociative Disorders Interview Schedule (DDIS), which includes data on physical and sexual abuse, and the Dissociative Experience Scale (DES) were used. Nine of 41 subjects who completed the DDIS reported symptoms suggesting DSM-III-R multiple personality, and 6 of the 39 subjects who completed the DES scored over 30 (reflecting a high likelihood of posttraumatic stress or multiple personality). Subjects' sexual abuse history rates were considerably greater then those in the Japanese general population. Though physical abuse history was associated with high dissociation, no difference was seen between the high and low dissociators in sexual abuse histories.

[Panic disorder]

The recent publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, third edition (D.S.M-III) has provided the basis for the separate diagnostic entity of panic disorder. A panic attack is characterized by the abrupt onset of apprehension or fear accompanied by symptoms such as dyspnea, palpitation, chest discomfort, dizziness, sweating, feeling of unreality, and fear of dying. Panic disorder, defined as four panic attacks in a four week period, has a lifetime prevalence of 1 to 2 percent of the general population. In these patients, panic disorders can be provoked by pharmacological challenge with sodium lactate, yohimbine, caffeine and carbon dioxide inhalation. Recently, the relationship between panic disorder and depression became a subject of investigation from various points of view.

Multidimensional assessment of mental state in occupational health care--combined application of three questionnaires: Tokyo University Egogram (TEG), Time Structuring Scale (TSS), and Profile of Mood States (POMS)

We attempted to develop a brief test battery to assess mental state for use in occupational health care settings. As a first step, we focused on the following three psychosocial aspects: ego state, behavioral pattern, and mood state which were considered to be closely related to mental state. To evaluate these parameters, we selected three established self-rating questionnaires: the Tokyo University Egogram for ego state, the Time Structuring Scale for behavioral pattern, and the Profile of Mood States for mood state. The combination of these three questionnaires was applied on 300 healthy company employees and school teachers (170 males and 130 females). Five ego-state factors (Critical Parents, Nurturing Parents, Adult, Free Child, and Adapted Child), five behavioral pattern factors (Withdrawal, Rituals and Pastimes, Activities, Intimacy, and Games), and six mood state factors (Tension-Anxiety, Depression-Dejection, Anger-Hostility, Vigor-Activity, Fatigue-Inertia, and Confusion-Bewilderment) were scored. Of 85 correlations between test factors, 49 in males and 61 in females were not significant, indicating that each test in this battery assessed aspects of mental state rather independent of those assessed by the others. However, significant correlations (P < 0.05) were observed for remaining pairs of test factors, indicating that these three parameters were also interrelated with each other, indicating that mental state could be elucidated more comprehensively by assessing all three psychosocial parameters than by assessing only one. The possibility that this battery could be used in the future in worksite health promotion programs is discussed.

Purification and cDNA cloning of bovine liver 5'-nucleotidase, a GPI-anchored protein, and its expression in COS cells

A glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored protein, 5'-nucleotidase [EC 3.1.3.5], was released from the membrane of bovine liver by use of phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C (PI-PLC) of Bacillus thuringiensis and purified by several column chromatographies to a homogeneous state. The purified protein has an apparent molecular mass of 61 kDa, as estimated by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. From the partial amino acid sequence of a tryptic peptide, mixed oligonucleotides were synthesized and used to screen a lambda gt11 liver cDNA library, and one positive clone, pE1, was isolated. Since the insert of the clone lacked the NH2-terminal coding region, another lambda gt11 liver cDNA library was screened by using a synthetic probe corresponding to the 5' region of the insert of pE1. Three additional cDNA clones were obtained. Sequencing of these cDNAs revealed an open reading frame that encodes a 574-residue polypeptide with a calculated mass of 63,084 Da. The predicted structure showed two highly hydrophobic stretches at both ends of the protein, like those of rat and human 5'-nucleotidases. The NH2-terminal 26 residues comprise a signal peptide and the COOH-terminal hydrophobic stretch may serve as a signal for the posttranslational GPI modification. An expression vector of the cDNA, pSVNT, was constructed in a mammalian expression vector pSVL and the 5'-nucleotidase activity was transiently expressed in COS-1 cells. The expressed activity was about 8 times higher than the pSVL-transfected control activity. PI-PLC released 45% of the transiently expressed 5'-nucleotidase activity, indicating that the cDNA isolated here encodes this enzyme expressed as a GPI-anchored protein.

[Panic disorder]

Panic episodes were described as a distinct form of anxiety by Freud almost 100 years ago, and the recent publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, third edition (D.S.M.-III), has provided the basis for the separate diagnostic entity of panic disorder. In this study, we showed the historical review of research and the result of our clinical study of panic disorder in 7 patients. The following results were obtained: 1) Abnormal DSTs were observed in only two of 5 patients. 2) Five of 6 patients showed high concentration of adrenaline and noradrenaline in urine. 3) Anxiety was provoked by caffeine in two of 5 patients. 4) Depression of T-wave was shown in three of 5 patients with orthostatic E.C.G. 5) Sinus tachycardia was gained in one of 3 patients with Holter E.C.G. 6) Abnormal respiratory functions were observed in all two patients with Treadmill. 7) Only one small heart was observed on a chest radiograph. 8) Panic attacks were provoked by sodium lactate infusion in four of 7 patients.

Interrelationship between serum muscle enzymes and a low T3 in anorexia nervosa

To determine the interrelationship between muscle dysfunction and a low T3 state, both seen in anorexia nervosa, we studied the relationship between the degree of muscle involvement, as assessed by the circulating concentration of the three muscle indicators (CPK, GOT and LDH), and serum T3 in thirty-three patients when they were admitted to the hospital. We also studied the malnutritional state, as assessed by their body weight or serum GH, serum potassium and the degree of hyperactivity exhibited. Additionally, another twelve patients were studied in order to explore the mounding phenomenon which is typically elicited in hypothyroidism. The logarithms of serum CPK and GOT correlated only with the serum T3 concentration (r = -0.35, p less than 0.05; r = -0.41, p less than 0.05; respectively). The logarithm of serum LDH highly correlated with serum T3, the percentage of ideal body weight, and the logarithm of serum GH (r = -0.55, p less than 0.01; r = -0.66, p less than 0.001; r = 0.43, p less than 0.05; respectively). The mounding phenomenon was elicited in ten out of twelve patients. In conclusion, it was implied that a low T3 state was associated with an increase in serum muscle indicators and thus with muscle dysfunction encountered in anorexia nervosa.
