Investigation of periodontal disease development and Porphyromonas gulae FimA genotype distribution in small dogs. Sci Rep 2024; 14:5360. Abstract
In dogs, Porphyromonas gulae is a major periodontal pathogen with 41-kDa proteins polymerizing to form a filamentous structure called fimbriae or pili, termed FimA. FimA is classified into three genotypes: A, B, and C, and there are combinations of types A, B, C, A/B, A/C, B/C, and A/B/C. Periodontal disease is the most common oral disease in small dogs, but the periodontal disease status and P. gulae colonization at each dog age and breed remain unclear. In this study, we stratified 665 small dogs and analyzed the periodontal status and distribution of P. gulae with each FimA genotype. Dogs with periodontal disease and FimA genotype tended to increase with age. The dogs with at least one FimA genotype had significantly more severe periodontal disease compared with P. gulae-negative dogs (P < 0.01). Additionally, periodontal status was significantly associated with specific FimA genotype distribution in Toy Poodles and Chihuahuas (P < 0.05), whereas there was no such association in Dachshunds. These results suggest that the onset of periodontal disease and P. gulae colonization are related and progress with age. The relationship between periodontal disease and FimA genotype may differ depending on the dog breeds.

Abstract
Previous research has demonstrated that Porphyromonas gulae (P. gulae) significantly contributes to the development of periodontal disease in dogs. Porphyromonas gulae is divided into three subtypes according to the 41-kDa filamentous appendage (fimA), defined as types A, B, and C. This study aimed to elucidate the association between fimA type of P. gulae with the number of permanent teeth, reflecting the severity of periodontal disease. Two hundred twenty-five dogs were categorized by P. gulae fimA type as negative, type A dominant, type B dominant, and type C dominant. The stage of periodontal disease in P. gulae-positive dogs increased with age, particularly in type C dominant dogs. Correspondingly, the number of permanent teeth in P. gulae fimA type C-dominant dogs was significantly lower than that of P. gulae-negative dogs, suggesting there is a significant association between fimA type of P. gulae and the number of permanent teeth resulting from the development of periodontal disease.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Venous thromboembolism represents a crucial perioperative complication and causes morbidity and mortality. It is important to predict deep vein thrombosis (DVT) before surgery under general anesthesia.
Purpose
We developed a pretest probability score for predicting DVT with perioperative clinical and laboratory variables.
Methods
Total 7435 patients were planed surgery under general anesthesia between 2017 and 2018. 1313 patients were performed whole leg ultrasonography suspected DVT using cutoff point of D-dimer ≥1μg/ml. We excluded age <18 years, ongoing anticoagulant therapy, other thrombosis, protein C deficiency, disseminated intravascular coagulation, central venous catheter, pregnancy and aneurysm. We enrolled 971 patients, we divided into the derivation cohort or the validation cohort. The association of DVT with multiple variables was characterized in a derivation cohort of 651 patients. The score validated in an independent cohort of 322 patients from the same study. We also performed a validation of this model in an independent cohort of patients derived from the same observational study.
Results
We found 6 clinical and 1 laboratory parameters that predicted DVT in patients before surgery. The prediction rule for DVT assigned 2 points for D-dimer more than 1.44 μg/ml and 1 point for age ≥60 years, female, ongoing steroid, active cancer with high risk of DVT, prolong immobility and antipsychotic drug. In derivation and validation cohorts, area under the curve was 0.73 and 0.70, respectively. New preoperative risk model with these parameters stratified patients into 3 individual categories corresponding to the risk of DVT. Rates of DVT in the derivation and validation cohorts, respectively, were 6% and 7% in low-risk (score 0–2), 22% and 21% in intermediate-risk (score 3–4), and 49% and 47% in high-risk (score ≥5) category. Rates of fresh DVT were 1% and 3% in low-risk, 10% and 9% in intermediate-risk, and 33% and 19% in high-risk category.
Conclusion
This score stratifies perioperative DVT risk and may detect effectively DVT. The findings should be considered with the further prospective research.

Abstract
Onychomycosis with longitudinal spikes in the nail plate has been reported to be refractory to oral drugs as with dermatophytoma. We evaluated the efficacy of 10% efinaconazole solution in the treatment of onychomycosis with longitudinal spikes. Of the 223 subjects who were enrolled in a previous study, a post‐hoc analysis of 82 subjects with longitudinal spikes was performed in this study. The opacity ratio of longitudinal spikes was decreased over time from 8.1 to 0.9 at the final assessment. In addition, the longitudinal spike disappearance rate increased early after the application to 81.7% at the final assessment. Therefore, 10% efinaconazole solution can be a first‐line drug for longitudinal spikes, which have been regarded as refractory to oral drugs.

Abstract
Objective: Porphyromonas gulae, a major periodontal pathogen in animals, possesses fimbriae that have been classified into three genotypes (A, B, C) based on the diversity of fimA genes encoding fimbrillin protein (FimA). P. gulae strains with type C fimbriae were previously shown to be more virulent than other types. In this study, we further examined the host toxicity mediated by P. gulae fimbriae by constructing recombinant FimA (rFimA) expression vectors for each genotype and raised antibodies to the purified proteins. Methods and Results: All larvae died within 204 h following infection with P. gulae type C at the low-dose infection, whereas type A and B did not. Among fimA types, the survival rates of the larvae injected with rFimA type C were remarkably decreased, while the survival rates of the larvae injected with rFimA type A and type B were greater than 50%. Clindamycin treatment inhibited the growth of type C strains in a dose-dependent manner, resulting in an increased rate of silkworm survival. Finally, type C rFimA-specific antiserum prolonged the survival of silkworm larvae stimulated by infection with P. gulae type C strain or injection of rFimA type C protein. Conclusion: These results suggested that type C fimbriae have high potential for enhancement of bacterial pathogenesis, and that both clindamycin and anti-type C rFimA-specific antibodies are potent inhibitors of type C fimbriae-induced toxicity. This is the first report to establish a silkworm infection model using P. gulae for toxicity assessment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The most effective skin antiseptic solution to reduce the incidence of catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) remains unknown. AIM To compare solutions with different chlorhexidine (CHG)-based concentrations and povidone-iodine (PVI) in adults with a central venous catheter (CVC) or arterial catheter, and identify an association with the incidence of CRBSI. METHODS This study evaluated randomized controlled trials comparing CHG and PVI antiseptic agents in patients aged ≥18 years with an underlying illness and a CVC or arterial catheter. The primary outcome was CRBSI rate. Network meta-analysis was performed by a frequentist-based approach with multi-variate random effects meta-analysis, and the effect size was expressed as relative risk (RR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). FINDINGS The search yielded 1511 records, of which five studies (2815 catheters) were included in the network meta-analysis. The risk of CRBSI was significantly lower with 1% CHG-alcohol than with 0.5% CHG-alcohol (RR 0.40, 95% CI 0.16-0.98; high certainty) or 10% PVI-aqueous (RR 0.31, 95% CI 0.15-0.63; high certainty). There was no significant difference in the risk of CRBSI between 1% CHG-alcohol and 2% CHG-aqueous (RR 0.35, 95% CI 0.12-1.04; moderate certainty) or other antiseptic solutions. The hierarchy of efficacy in reducing CRBSI was 1% CHG-alcohol, 0.5% CHG-alcohol, 2% CHG-aqueous and 10% PVI-aqueous. CONCLUSION Antiseptic agents containing 1% CHG-alcohol were more strongly associated with reduced risk for CRBSI compared with agents containing 0.5% CHG-alcohol or 10% PVI-aqueous.

Abstract
A thermally impossible positive free energy reaction can proceed by electron-orbital-selective excitation. When the Si 2p core level is photo-excited in Pt/SiOx bilayer films, Coulomb repulsion at the final two-hole state localized in the valence band by an interatomic Auger transition induces dissociation of the O atom and formation of a Si–Pt bond. Consequently, Pt2Si silicide is formed by a positive free energy reaction. Under a single particle excitation of the valence band, low probability of the coexistence of the two-hole state for picosecond order suppresses to allow the reaction to proceed. A thermally impossible positive free energy reaction can proceed by electron-orbital-selective excitation.![]()

Abstract
UNLABELLED This study revealed the change in the paravertebral muscles in patients with osteoporotic vertebral fracture. Increased pain is likely to be the driver for reduced activity, reduced activities of daily living, and consequent increase in fat infiltration of the paravertebral muscles, assumed to be secondary to reduced activity level or, conversely, partial immobilization. INTRODUCTION To reveal the time courses and impact of the paravertebral muscles (PVMs) on the healing process of osteoporotic vertebral fractures and risk factors for PVM decrease. METHODS Consecutive patients with symptomatic osteoporotic vertebral fractures were enrolled in 11 hospitals. At enrollment and 3- and 6-month follow-up, PVMs, including the multifidus and erector spinae, were examined using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The PVM cross-sectional area (CSA) and fat signal fraction (FSF) were measured at L3. Low back pain (LBP), activities of daily living (ADLs), and risk factors for PVM decrease at the 6-month follow-up were investigated. PVM decrease was defined as > 1 standard deviation decrease of the CSA or > 1 standard deviation increase of the FSF. RESULTS Among 153 patients who completed the 6-month follow-up, 117 (92 women, 79%) had MRI of L3 at enrollment and 3- and 6-month follow-up (mean age at enrollment, 78.5 years). The CSA did not change 6 months from onset (p for trend = 0.634), whereas the FSF significantly increased (p for trend = 0.033). PVM decrease was observed in 30 patients (26%). LBP was more severe, and delayed union was more frequent in patients with PVM decrease (p = 0.021 mixed-effect model and p = 0.029 chi-square test, respectively). The risk factors for PVM decrease were ADL decline at the 3-month follow-up (adjusted odds ratio = 5.35, p = 0.026). CONCLUSION PVM decrease was significantly related to LBP and delayed union after osteoporotic vertebral fracture onset. ADL decline at the 3-month follow-up was a risk factor for PVM decrease. Therefore, restoring ADLs within 3 months after onset is important.

Abstract
Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), especially arachidonic acid (ARA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), play an important role in biological regulation. In our previous study using mice deficient in Δ6 desaturase (D6D), we reported that ARA is required for body growth, while DHA is necessary for functional development. In mammals, ARA and DHA are supplied directly or by synthesis from linoleic acid (LA) and α-linolenic acid (ALA). However, as desaturase enzyme activity is immature or low in newborns, and humans with minor alleles of the gene encoding desaturase, respectively, they require dietary supplementation with ARA and DHA. To investigate how the body reacts to a long-term reduction in fatty acid synthesis, we measured behavioral changes and fatty acid composition in mice heterozygous for the D6D null mutation with reduced D6D activity fed a diet containing only LA and ALA as PUFAs. During the growth-maturity period, heterozygous mice showed a slightly change in interest and curiosity compared with the wild-type group. ARA levels were decreased in the brain and liver in the heterozygous group, especially during the growth-maturity period, whereas DHA levels were decreased in the liver only in the old age period, suggesting that there are differences in the synthesis of and demand for ARA and DHA during life. For newborns, and humans with minor alleles with low desaturase activity, direct ARA intake is particularly important during the growth-maturity period, but they may need to be supplemented with DHA in the old age period. Further research is needed to determine the optimal intake and duration of these fatty acids.

Abstract
Porphyromonas gulae is a major periodontal pathogen in dogs, which can be transmitted to their owners. A major virulence factor of P. gulae consists of a 41-kDa filamentous appendage (FimA) on the cell surface, which is classified into three genotypes: A, B, and C. Thus far, inhibition of periodontal disease in dogs remains difficult. The present study assessed the inhibitory effects of a combination of clindamycin and interferon alpha (IFN-α) formulation against P. gulae and periodontal disease. Growth of P. gulae was significantly inhibited by clindamycin; this inhibition had a greater effect on type C P. gulae than on type A and B isolates. In contrast, the IFN-α formulation inhibited the expression of IL-1β and COX-2 elicited by type A and B isolates, but not that elicited by type C isolates. Furthermore, periodontal recovery was promoted by the administration of both clindamycin and IFN-α formulation to dogs undergoing periodontal treatment; moreover, this combined treatment reduced the number of FimA genotypes in oral specimens from treated dogs. These results suggest that a combination of clindamycin and IFN-α formulation inhibit P. gulae virulence and thus may be effective for the prevention of periodontal disease induced by P. gulae.

Abstract
PURPOSE Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) show promising clinical activity in advanced cancers. However, the safety and efficacy of PD-1/PD-L1 blockade in patients with preexisting antinuclear antibodies (ANA) are unclear. METHODS 191 patients treated with nivolumab, pembrolizumab, atezolizumab, or durvalumab for unresectable advanced cancers between September 2014 and December 2018 were identified retrospectively. Patients were divided into positive (ANA titers ≥ 1:160) and negative ANA groups (ANA titers < 1:160). Development of immune-related adverse events (irAEs), the overall response rate (ORR), and disease control rate (DCR) were monitored. RESULTS Positive ANA titers were seen in 9 out of 191 patients. Four patients in the positive ANA group and 69 patients in the negative group developed irAEs of any grade without a significant difference between the groups. The development of endocrine, pulmonary, and cutaneous irAEs was not significant, whereas positive ANA was significantly higher in patients who developed colitis (2/9) than in patients who did not (3/182, P = 0.0002). DCR in the positive and negative ANA group was 37.5% and 67.5%, respectively, and was not statistically significant, but had better efficacy in patients without ANA (P = 0.08). ANA-related autoimmune diseases such as SLE, Sjögren's syndrome, MCTD, scleroderma, dermatomyositis, and polymyositis was not induced in either group. However, one patient with preexisting dermatomyositis had a flare up after initiation of atezolizumab. CONCLUSION Further studies to identify predictive factors for the development of irAEs are required to provide relevant patient care and maximize the therapeutic benefits of ICIs.

Abstract
We evaluated the efficacy of efinaconazole 10% topical solution in long‐term use, for up to 72 weeks, for onychomycosis, including severe cases. Among 605 participants, 219 patients diagnosed as having onychomycosis were evaluated for the efficacy of efinaconazole. The treatment success rate (<10% clinical involvement of the target toenail) at the final assessment time point was 56.6%, the complete cure rate was 31.1% and the mycological cure rate was 61.6%, all of which increased over time, demonstrating that continuous application contributed to the improvement of cure rate. Even in severe cases, reduction of the affected nail area was observed, showing the potential efficacy of the treatment. Responses to a quality of life questionnaire among patients with onychomycosis, OnyCOE‐t, suggested that efinaconazole treatment improved the patients’ quality of life. The incidence of adverse drug reaction in the patients eligible for the assessment was 6.3%, and this developed only in the administration site in all cases. No systemic adverse event was observed. In addition, no increase in the incidence of adverse drug reaction due to long‐term use was found. Efinaconazole therapy was proved to exhibit excellent balance between efficacy and safety, and thus may serve as a useful treatment option for onychomycosis.

Abstract
High precision measurements of the ground state hyperfine structure (HFS) of muonium is a stringent tool for testing bound-state quantum electrodynamics (QED) theory, determining fundamental constants of the muon magnetic moment and mass, and searches for new physics. Muonium is the most suitable system to test QED because both theoretical and experimental values can be precisely determined. Previous measurements were performed decades ago at LAMPF with uncertainties mostly dominated by statistical errors. At the J-PARC Muon Science Facility (MUSE), the MuSEUM collaboration is planning complementary measurements of muonium HFS both at zero and high magnetic field. The new high-intensity muon beam that will soon be available at H-Line will provide an opportunity to improve the precision of these measurements by one order of magnitude. An overview of the different aspects of these new muonium HFS measurements, the current status of the preparation for high-field measurements, and the latest results at zero field are presented.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to assess if Clinofibrate (CF) treatment improved lipid metabolism in dogs, and to clarify whether its efficacy is influenced by canine characteristics. We collected medical records of 306 dogs and performed epidemiological analyses. Lipid values of all lipoproteins were significantly decreased by CF medication, especially VLDL triglyceride (TG) concentration (mean reduction rate=54.82%). However, 17.65% of dogs showed drug refractoriness in relation to TG level, and Toy Poodles had a lower CF response than other breeds (OR=5.36, 95% CI=2.07-13.90). Therefore, our study suggests that genetic factors may have an effect on CF response, so genetic studies on lipid metabolism-related genes might be conducted to identify variations in CF efficacy.

Abstract
A novel design of an elastic metamaterial with anisotropic mass density is proposed to manipulate flexural waves at a subwavelength scale. The three-dimensional metamaterial is inspired by kirigami, which can be easily manufactured by cutting and folding a thin metallic plate. By attaching the resonant kirigami structures periodically on the top of a host plate, a metamaterial plate can be constructed without any perforation that degrades the strength of the pristine plate. An analytical model is developed to understand the working mechanism of the proposed elastic metamaterial and the dispersion curves are calculated by using an extended plane wave expansion method. As a result, we verify an anisotropic effective mass density stemming from the coupling between the local resonance of the kirigami cells and the global flexural wave propagations in the host plate. Finally, numerical simulations on the directional flexural wave propagation in a two-dimensional array of kirigami metamaterial as well as super-resolution imaging through an elastic hyperlens are conducted to demonstrate the subwavelength-scale flexural wave control abilities. The proposed kirigami-based metamaterial has the advantages of no-perforation design and subwavelength flexural wave manipulation capability, which can be highly useful for engineering applications including non-destructive evaluations and structural health monitoring.

Abstract
This study focused on the effect of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) during the lactation period of delta-6-desaturase knockout (D6D-KO) mice using an artificial rearing method. Newborn pups of D6D-KO male mice were separated from their dams within 48h and were fed artificial milk. Six formulations of milk were used: Control (Cont) milk (3.9% α-linolenic acid and 18% linoleic acid), + 1.3% arachidonic acid (ARA), + 1.2% docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), + 1.3% eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), + 1.1% ARA + 1.3% DHA, and + 1.3% ARA + 1.3% EPA. After weaning, the mice were fed pelleted diets containing a similar fatty acid composition as during lactation. Brain function was measured using a behavioral approach including motor activity and the Morris water maze test at 9 weeks of age. The body weight of the KO Cont group was significantly lower than that of the wild-type (WT) group; however, the ARA, ARA+DHA and ARA+EPA groups were similar to the WT group. In the Morris water maze test, the DHA and ARA+DHA groups demonstrated learning and memory performance similar to the WT group; however, the Cont group exhibited quite poor learning performance. Interestingly, the ARA, EPA and ARA+EPA groups showed intermediate performance between the Cont and WT groups. These results suggested that the 18-C essential fatty acids linoleic and α-linolenic were not sufficient to support optimal growth and neural performance. ARA was the most critical long-chain PUFA for supporting body growth. In addition, DHA was clearly essential for brain function. Taken together, these results indicate that the combination of DHA and ARA is essential for optimal growth and development in early life.

Abstract
In the present work, motivated by generalized forms of the Hertzian dynamics associated with granular crystals, we consider the possibility of such models to give rise to both dispersive shock and rarefaction waves. Depending on the value p of the nonlinearity exponent, we find that both of these possibilities are realizable. We use a quasicontinuum approximation of a generalized inviscid Burgers model in order to predict the solution profile up to times near the formation of the dispersive shock, as well as to estimate when it will occur. Beyond that time threshold, oscillations associated with the highly dispersive nature of the underlying model emerge, which cannot be captured by the quasicontinuum approximation. Our analytical characterization of the above features is complemented by systematic numerical computations.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This study revealed the time course of osteoporotic vertebral fracture by magnetic resonance imaging using a simple classification. Signal changes were associated with the compression degree and mobility of the fractured vertebral body. This classification showed sufficient reliability in categorizing magnetic resonance imaging findings of osteoporotic vertebral fractures. INTRODUCTION Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is useful in diagnosing osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVFs). This study investigated the time course of OVFs by MRI using a simple classification. METHODS This multicenter cohort study was performed from 2012 to 2015. Consecutive patients with ≤2-week-old OVFs were enrolled in 11 institutions. MRI was performed at enrollment and at 1-, 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up. Signal changes on T1-weighted imaging (T1WI), T2WI, and short τ inversion recovery (STIR) were classified according to signal intensity. Height and angular motion of vertebral bodies were also measured. RESULTS The 6-month follow-up was completed by 153 patients. At enrollment, fractured vertebrae signal changes were 43 % diffuse and 57 % confined low on T1WI; on T2WI, 56, 24, and 5 % were confined low, high, and diffuse low, respectively; on STIR, 100 % were high. On T1WI, diffuse low remained most common (90 % at 1 month and 60 % at 3 months) until 6 and 12 months, when most were confined low (54 and 52 %, respectively). On T2WI, confined low remained most common (decreasing to 41 % at 12 months). On STIR, high signal change was shown in 98, 87, and 64 % at 3, 6, and 12 months, respectively. At 3, 6, and 12 months, diffuse low signal change was associated with significantly lower vertebral height, and high signal change was associated with significantly greater angular motion. CONCLUSIONS MRI signal changes were associated with the compression degree and angular motion of fractured vertebrae. This classification showed sufficient reliability in categorizing MRI findings of OVFs.

cosmic radiation in aviation, taking into account the current ICRP system of radiological
protection, the latest available data on exposures in aviation, and experience
gained worldwide in the management of exposures in aviation. The publication
describes the origins of cosmic radiation, how it exposes passengers and aircraft
crew, the basic radiological protection principles that apply to this existing exposure
situation, and the available protective actions. For implementation of the optimisation
principle, the Commission recommends a graded approach proportionate to the
level of exposure that may be received by individuals. The objective is to keep the
exposure of the most exposed individuals to a reasonable level. The Commission also
recommends that information be disseminated to raise awareness about cosmic radiation,
and to support informed decisions among concerned stakeholders.

Abstract
The development of microstructure during melting, reactive wetting and solidification of solder pastes on Cu-plated printed circuit boards has been studied by synchrotron radiography. Using Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu/Cu and Sn-0.7Cu/Cu as examples, we show that the interfacial Cu6Sn5 layer is present within 0.05 s of wetting, and explore the kinetics of flux void formation at the interface between the liquid and the Cu6Sn5 layer. Quantification of the nucleation locations and anisotropic growth kinetics of primary Cu6Sn5 crystals reveals a competition between the nucleation of Cu6Sn5 in the liquid versus growth of Cu6Sn5 from the existing Cu6Sn5 layer. Direct imaging confirms that the β-Sn nucleates at/near the Cu6Sn5 layer in Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu/Cu joints.

Abstract
The essentiality of arachidonic acid (ARA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) for growth and brain function using delta-6-desaturase knockout (D6D-KO) mice and a novel artificial rearing method was investigated. Newborn male wild type (WT) and homozygous D6D-KO pups were separated from their dams within 48h and fed artificial milk containing α-linolenic acid and linoleic acid (Cont), or supplemented with ARA, DHA or both (ARA+DHA). After weaning, each group was fed diets similar to artificial milk in fatty acid composition for 7 weeks. KO-Cont showed a lower body weight than WT-Cont. When ARA was added to the control diet, (KO-ARA and KO-ARA+DHA diets) the body weight gain was restored. The KO-DHA group was initially similar to the WT groups for the first 6 weeks, but afterwards their body weight was significantly lower. Brain weight in the 10 week old KO-ARA+DHA group was significantly higher within the KO dietary groups. Motor activity of the KO-ARA and KO-ARA+DHA groups was elevated relative to the KO-Cont group but the KO-ARA+DHA group exhibited similar activity to the WT-Cont group. In the motor coordination ability test, the KO-Cont group performed significantly worse compared with the WT-Cont group. KO-ARA mice showed decreased motor coordination in spite of their increased motor activity. The best performance was observed in only KO-ARA+DHA mice. These experiments demonstrated that supplementation with only ARA or only DHA was insufficient for optimal development. ARA was essential for normal growth within the lactation period. In conclusion, only the combination of preformed ARA and DHA was capable of improving the dysfunction caused by D6D deficiency.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This study demonstrated the predictive values of radiological findings for delayed union after osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVFs). High-signal changes on T2WI were useful findings. INTRODUCTION The purpose of the present study is to determine predictive radiological findings for delayed union by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and plain X-rays at two time points in the acute phase of OVFs. METHODS This multicenter cohort study was performed from 2012 to 2015. A total of 218 consecutive patients with OVFs ≤2 weeks old were enrolled. MRIs and plain X-rays were performed at the time of enrollment and at 1- and 6-month follow-ups. Signal changes on T1-weighted imaging (T1WI) were classified as diffuse low-, confined low-, or no-signal change; those on T2WI were classified as high (similar to the intensity of cerebrospinal fluid), confined low-, diffuse low-, or no-signal change. The angular motion of the fractured vertebral body was measured with X-rays. RESULTS A total of 153 patients completed the 6-month follow-up. A high-signal change on T2WI was most useful in predicting delayed union. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive values were 53.3, 87.8, and 51.6 % at enrollment and 65.5, 84.8, and 51.4 % at the 1-month follow-up, respectively. The positive predictive value increased to 62.5 % with observation of high- or diffuse low-signal changes at both enrollment and the 1-month follow-up. The cutoff value of vertebral motion was 5 degrees. Sensitivity and specificity at enrollment were 52.4 and 74.1 %, respectively. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated the radiological factors predicting delayed union after an OVF. T2 high-signal changes showed the strongest association with delayed union. Consecutive MRIs were particularly useful as a differential tool to predict delayed union following OVFs.

Abstract
Peripheral neuropathy due to vasculitis without any complications of vasculitis in other organs was first reported in 1987. This condition was termed non-systemic vasculitic neuropathy (NSVN). Although vasculitis is believed to develop in small arteries and arterioles in this disease, the level of vascular involvement has not been fully established. We present a case of NSVN followed up by MR angiography, which was thought to be useful to assess the level as well as the state of vascular lesions in this condition.

Abstract
This multicentre, retrospective observational study was conducted from January 2010 to December 2010 to determine the optimal time for discontinuing continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) by evaluating factors predictive of successful discontinuation in patients with acute kidney injury. Analysis was performed for patients after CRRT was discontinued because of renal function recovery. Patients were divided into two groups according to the success or failure of CRRT discontinuation. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, urine output at discontinuation, creatinine level and CRRT duration were found to be significant variables (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for urine output, 0.814). In conclusion, we found that higher urine output, lower creatinine and shorter CRRT duration were significant factors to predict successful discontinuation of CRRT.

Abstract
We previously reported the importance of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LC-PUFA (>C20)) intake, including arachidonic acid (ARA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), for growth. This follow-up study focuses on ARA using a novel artificial rearing model during the lactation period in delta-6-desaturase knockout (D6D-KO) mice. Newborn D6D-KO male mouse pups were separated from dams within 48 hours and fed artificial milks containing 18-C essential fatty acids (EFAs) (16-17% LA, 3.8-4.1% ALA) with or without 1.2% ARA. After weaning, mice were maintained on similar diets: 15% LA, 2.3-2.4% ALA with or without 1.9% ARA. As a reference group, new born wild type (WT) male mouse pups were maintained by artificial milk and diet containing LA and ALA without ARA. Aspects of brain function were measured behaviorally (motor activity and rota-rod test) when mice were age 9 weeks. Body weight in the KO-Cont group was significantly lower (approximately 30%) than in the WT-Cont group, but this decrease was ameliorated by providing ARA in the KO-ARA group. The motor activity and coordination in the KO-Cont group decreased markedly compared to the WT-Cont group. The KO-ARA group had a tendency toward deteriorated motor coordination, although the motor activity was significantly enhanced compared to the KO-Cont group. In KO-ARA group brains, the level of ARA was increased and DHA decreased compared to WT-Cont. These results suggest that intake of LA and ALA only is insufficient to support healthy growth, and that ARA is also required, at least during the lactation period. These findings also suggested that continued intake of relatively high levels of ARA and without supplemental DHA during development led to an increased motor activity above that of WT animals. These studies indicate that both ARA dose and proper combination with DHA must be delineated to define optimal growth and behavioral function.

Abstract
We investigate the nonlinear wave dynamics of origami-based metamaterials composed of Tachi-Miura polyhedron (TMP) unit cells. These cells exhibit strain softening behavior under compression, which can be tuned by modifying their geometrical configurations or initial folded conditions. We assemble these TMP cells into a cluster of origami-based metamaterials, and we theoretically model and numerically analyze their wave transmission mechanism under external impact. Numerical simulations show that origami-based metamaterials can provide a prototypical platform for the formation of nonlinear coherent structures in the form of rarefaction waves, which feature a tensile wavefront upon the application of compression to the system. We also demonstrate the existence of numerically exact traveling rarefaction waves in an effective lumped-mass model. Origami-based metamaterials can be highly useful for mitigating shock waves, potentially enabling a wide variety of engineering applications.

Isoform conversion from drebrin E to drebrin A and accumulation of the latter in dendritic spines occurs during synapse maturation. We have previously demonstrated that drebrin A plays a pivotal role in spine morphogenesis and plasticity. However, it is unclear whether drebrin A plays a specific role in processes required for structural plasticity, and whether drebrin E can substitute in this role. To answer these questions, we analyzed mutant mice (named DAKO mice), in which isoform conversion from drebrin E to drebrin A is disrupted. In DAKO mouse brain, drebrin E continues to be expressed throughout life instead of drebrin A. Electrophysiological studies using hippocampal slices revealed that long-term potentiation of CA1 synapses was impaired in adult DAKO mice, but not in adolescents. In parallel with this age-dependent impairment, DAKO mice exhibited impaired hippocampus-dependent fear learning in an age-dependent manner; the impairment was evident in adult mice, but not in adolescents. In addition, histological investigation revealed that the spine length of the apical dendrite of CA1 pyramidal cells was significantly longer in adult DAKO mice than in wild-type mice. Our data indicate that the roles of drebrin E and drebrin A in brain function are different from each other, that the isoform conversion of drebrin is critical, and that drebrin A is indispensable for normal synaptic plasticity and hippocampus-dependent fear memory in the adult brain.

Abstract
It is important to establish experimental animal techniques that are applicable to the
newborn and infant phases for nutrition and pharmacological studies. Breeding technology
using the artificial suckling method without breast milk is very effective for the study
of newborn nutrition. Using this method, we separated newborn mice from dams within 48 h
of birth and provided them with artificial milk. We evaluated mouse anxiety levels after
early postnatal maternal separation. Artificially reared mice were subjected to elevated
plus-maze tests to assess emotional behavior at 9 weeks of age. Artificially reared mice
showed a significantly lower frequency of entries and dipping into the open arms of the
maze compared with dam-reared mice. This result indicates that the anxiety level of
artificially reared mice was higher than that of dam-reared mice. Moreover, the
concentration of monoamines in the brain was determined after the behavioral experiment.
The hippocampal norepinephrine, serotonin, and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid levels in the
artificially reared mice were significantly higher than those of the dam-reared mice.
These results suggest that maternal-offspring interactions are extremely important for the
emotional development of newborn infants during the lactation period. In future studies,
it is necessary to consider the environmental factors and conditions that minimize the
influence of artificial rearing on emotional behavior.

Abstract
We investigate the unique mechanical properties of reentrant 3D origami structures based on the Tachi-Miura polyhedron (TMP). We explore the potential usage as mechanical metamaterials that exhibit tunable negative Poisson's ratio and structural bistability simultaneously. We show analytically and experimentally that the Poisson's ratio changes from positive to negative and vice versa during its folding motion. In addition, we verify the bistable mechanism of the reentrant 3D TMP under rigid origami configurations without relying on the buckling motions of planar origami surfaces. This study forms a foundation in designing and constructing TMP-based metamaterials in the form of bellowslike structures for engineering applications.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to survey clinics’ guidance about recommended
fasting duration (FD) prior to lipoprotein analysis, and to characterize lipoprotein
cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations in obese and overweight dogs categorized on
the basis of the 5-point body condition score (BCS) scale. A dataset was created from
lipoprotein analysis medical records of 1,538 dogs from 75 breeds in 354 clinics from 2012
to 2013. A phone survey was conducted to obtain the clinics’ FD. Two-level linear
mixed-effects models were applied to the data. Over 50% of the clinics said they
recommended fasting for 12 hr or more. Dogs in clinics with FD 12 hr or more had lower
chylomicron triglyceride concentrations than those in clinics with FD less than 8 hr
(P=0.05). Mean (± SEM) BCS at sampling was 3.7 ± 0.02. Obese and
overweight dogs had higher very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and high density
lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations than ideal dogs
(P<0.05), but no such difference was found for low density
lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations (P≥0.07). Across
all BCS, as dog age rose from 0 to 8 years old, HDL cholesterol concentrations decreased
by 13.5 mg/dl, whereas VLDL triglyceride concentrations increased by 81.7
mg/dl (P<0.05). In conclusion, FD of 8 hr or less
may affect lipoprotein lipid concentrations. Obese and overweight dogs were characterized
as having high VLDL and HDL cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations.
