The Association of Research Quantitative Measures With Faculty Ranks of Australian and New Zealand Dental Schools

INTRODUCTION

The scholarly productivity of a faculty member can be measured through several indicators including annual appraisals, feedback, and the number of publications per year. The present study aims to assess the association of quantitative research measures and academic ranks in Australian and New Zealand dental schools.

METHODS

It was an analytical observational cross-sectional study. Full-time faculty members working in Australia and New Zealand's dental schools were discovered on official websites. Various bibliometric parameters including h-index, total number of citations, total number of publications, and maximum number of sources of a single publication were analyzed. Spearman rank correlation was used to determine the correlation between bibliometric variables and academic ranks (lecturer, assistant professor, professor). The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare bibliometric parameters among departments (Basic and Clinical) and gender (male and female).

RESULTS

Through the present search strategy, 207 full-time faculty members were identified, of which 12 were from New Zealand, and 195 were from Australia. Among them, 130 (62.8%) were male and 70 (33.8%) were female faculty members. There was a positive correlation of all bibliometric parameters with academic ranks (p = 0.001). There was no statistical difference between the two countries for academic parameters (p > 0.05). Male faculty members showed significantly higher academic productivity than female members in Australian dental schools (p = 0.001).

CONCLUSION

These bibliometric parameters and other educational parameters can be considered for determining faculty promotions. These bibliometric parameters appear to be suitable metrics for assessing research productivity, impact, and visibility.

Corporate social responsibility performance and information asymmetry: the moderating role of ownership concentration

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the moderating effect of ownership concentration on the relationship between corporate social responsibility performance (CSRP) and information asymmetry using a sample of Chinese firms.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use a sample of 208 listed firms from nine different sectors in China over the period of 2008–2018. They use the generalized method of moment approach to examine the dynamic relationship between CSRP, information asymmetry and ownership concentration. CSRP index is constructed using environmental performance, social performance and corporate governance performance measures.

Findings

The results indicate that CSRP positively affects the information asymmetry. Moreover, by taking ownership concentration as a moderating variable, the results indicate that ownership concentration negatively moderates the association between CSRP and information asymmetry.

Research limitations/implications

The findings of the study advance the understanding of CSR practices in China. The findings have important implications for the regulators and managers in China for adopting socially responsible activities for the improvement of firm performance and protecting shareholder rights.

Originality/value

The study extends the existing research on the association between CSRP and information asymmetry by including the ownership concentration as a moderating variable. The research showed that CSR plays an important role in reducing the informational gap between managers and outside stakeholders. However, the relationship between CSR and information asymmetry is not studied yet with the moderating role of ownership concentration.

Managing restricted patients in acute, non-secure in-patient services: clinical, ethical and resource implications of long waits for a response from the Ministry of Justice

AIMS AND METHOD

In-patients subject to Section 37/41 of the Mental Health Act 1983 (MHA) require permission from the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) for leave, transfer and discharge. This study aimed to quantify the time spent waiting for the MoJ to respond to requests, using data on restricted patients recalled to a non-forensic unit over 8 years.

RESULTS

Eleven admissions were identified. The mean total time waiting for response was 95 days per admission, with an estimated cost of £40 922 per admission.

CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS

Current procedures may contribute to considerable increases in length of stay. This goes against the principles of the MHA, as non-secure services rarely provide the range of interventions which justify prolonged admission. We suggest several ways to resolve this issue, including broadening the guidance for the use of voluntary admissions and civil sections, and allowing clinicians to make decisions on leave and transfer where there is little risk.

The influence of financial reporting quality and audit quality on investment efficiency

Purpose

This study aims to empirically investigate the effect of financial reporting quality (FRQ) and audit quality (AQ) on the investment efficiency (IE) for the firms listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange during the period 2007-2014.

Design/methodology

The authors use pooled ordinary least squares (OLS) regression which cluster at the firm and year level to test the hypotheses. For sensitivity check, the authors also account for reverse causality and cross-sectional dependence by using the GMM and FGLS regression methods. Furthermore, the authors built their theoretical arguments based on alignment hypothesis of the agency theory and resource-based view of the firm.

Findings

The findings suggest that higher FRQ and AQ are associated with higher IE. The results for these particular estimates are robust when tested using alternative estimation techniques. Overall, the outcomes of this study are in line with the arguments presented by the alignment hypothesis of the agency theory and resource-based view of the firm.

Practical implications

This study is fruitful for policymakers’ and investors. This study finds that the audit done by the Big 4 also reduces the information gap and, thus, reduces the moral hazard and adverse selection problems, thereby enhancing the IE.

Originality

The authors extend the debate on determinates of IE and highlight two monitoring mechanisms: FRQ and AQ. The authors further extend the literature on the economic consequences of AQ in terms of IE, as proposed by Francis (2011). For the first time, this study investigates the impact of AQ on IE in a setting where minority shareholder risk of exploitation is high relative to other markets in Asia.

FREQUENCY AND DETERMINANTS OF DEPRESSIVE ILLNESS AMONG INFERTILE WOMEN

Background: Depression is much more common among infertile women as compared to the general population. The objectives of our study were to determine the frequency of depression among infertile women and association of depression among infertile women with age groups, level of education, and duration of infertility. Materials & Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Department of Psychiatry, Gomal Medical College, D.I.Khan, Pakistan from 1st January 2018 to 31st December 2018. Sample size was 145 women with primary infertility selected through consecutive sampling technique. The demographic variables were; age groups, level education, duration of primary infertility and research variables was presence of depression. Observed and expected frequency for depression was analyzed by chi-square goodness-of-fit test. Association of depression with age groups, level of education and infertility duration were analyzed by chi-square test of independence. Results: Out of 145 infertile women. 122(84.1%;78.15-90.05%) had depression whereas 23(15.9%;9.95-21.85%) had no depression. Thirty seven out of 145(25.52%) women in the age group

Harnessing clinical psychiatric data with an electronic assessment tool (OPCRIT+): the utility of symptom dimensions

Progress in personalised psychiatry is dependent on researchers having access to systematic and accurately acquired symptom data across clinical diagnoses. We have developed a structured psychiatric assessment tool, OPCRIT+, that is being introduced into the electronic medical records system of the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust which can help to achieve this. In this report we examine the utility of the symptom data being collected with the tool. Cross-sectional mental state data from a mixed-diagnostic cohort of 876 inpatients was subjected to a principal components analysis (PCA). Six components, explaining 46% of the variance in recorded symptoms, were extracted. The components represented dimensions of mania, depression, positive symptoms, anxiety, negative symptoms and disorganization. As indicated by component scores, different clinical diagnoses demonstrated distinct symptom profiles characterized by wide-ranging levels of severity. When comparing the predictive value of symptoms against diagnosis for a variety of clinical outcome measures (e.g. ‘Overactive, aggressive behaviour’), symptoms proved superior in five instances (R² range: 0.06–0.28) whereas diagnosis was best just once (R²∶0.25). This report demonstrates that symptom data being routinely gathered in an NHS trust, when documented on the appropriate tool, have considerable potential for onward use in a variety of clinical and research applications via representation as dimensions of psychopathology.

Controlled Release of Chlorhexidine Diacetate from a Porous Methacrylate System: Supercritical Fluid Assisted Foaming and Impregnation

The release of chlorhexidine diacetate (CX) from a self-curing polymeric system based on poly(ethylmethacrylate) and tetrahydrofurfurylmethacrylate (PEM/THFM) was developed in this study. Supercritical fluid assisted impregnation and foaming was employed for preparing porous CX-PEM/THFM drug release system. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) show that the crystallinity of CX significantly decreased after supercritical processing, whilst Raman spectroscopy suggested a hydrogen bonding interaction between the CX and PEM in the product. A UV-Vis dissolution study revealed that the drug release rate is almost as seven times faster in the SCF processed drug delivery system than conventional cured samples.

Synthesis of poly(sebacic anhydride)-indomethacin controlled release composites via supercritical carbon dioxide assisted impregnation

Poly(sebacic anhydride), PSA and indomethacin drug composite (DC) formulations were prepared using supercritical CO(2) (sc-CO(2)) aided mixing. The effect of the experimental temperature and sebacic acid purity on the physical properties of PSA-indomethacin DCs was investigated using a range of analytical techniques. The nature of the PSA-indomethacin interaction in composites after processing in sc-CO(2) under various conditions was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods, respectively. The results indicate that processing at 130 degrees C of a 4:1 (w/w) ratio PSA-indomethacin mixture, renders the indomethacin amorphous and dispersed within the polymer matrix. The primary interaction between PSA and indomethacin appears to be hydrogen bonding between the carboxylic acid OH of indomethacin and the carbonyl group of PSA. In vitro dissolution studies revealed that the processed composites exhibit a substantially enhanced dissolution rate compared to the physical mixtures. Also, through the control of experimental conditions, the initial burst effect of the drug release was largely alleviated. Instead, the erosion of PSA (zero order degradation) became the dominant factor in controlling the drug release rate.

Supercritical fluid assisted impregnation of indomethacin into chitosan thermosets for controlled release applications

Supercritical carbon dioxide (sc-CO(2)) was used to impregnate indomethacin (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) into chitosan thermosets for the preparation of controlled release formulations. The products were analyzed by a range of methods including powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effects of the experimental temperature and pressure of the sc-CO(2) on the thermal behavior of chitosan-indomethacin drug composites (DCs) was investigated via differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The interaction of chitosan and indomethacin after impregnation was then studied by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. Our results suggest that the supercritical fluid impregnation process results in indomethacin being amorphously dispersed within the chitosan matrix. FTIR data suggest that the aliphatic carbonyl group of indomethacin interacts with the NH(2) group of the chitosan backbone. In vitro dissolution studies (via UV-vis spectroscopy) reveal that the dissolution rate of indomethacin substantially increases after processing in sc-CO(2), particularly, under the experimental conditions 20.7 MPa and 70 degrees C.

Formation and characterization of porous indomethacin-PVP coprecipitates prepared using solvent-free supercritical fluid processing

Supercritical carbon dioxide (sc-CO2) was used to prepare coprecipitates of indomethacin (IM) and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) with the aim to improve the dissolution rate of IM. The coprecipitates of IM and PVP at various proportions were prepared using a stirred batch reactor containing sc-CO2 as a gas saturated solution (i.e., the compressible CO2 is dissolved in the molten compound). Temperatures between 40 and 90 degrees C and pressure of 150 or 200 bar were employed. The coprecipitates prepared at 75 degrees C and 150 bar were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), powder X-ray diffraction (PXD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and dissolution testing. The results suggested that IM was totally amorphous at PVP weight fraction of 0.80 and above (indeed, as a molecular composite in which the drug molecules interact with the polymer backbone). As the PVP weight fraction decreased, IM displayed an increasing amount of crystalline material. The SEM photographs of coprecipitates showed a foamed and porous structure. The dissolution rate of IM was increased by incorporation of PVP. IM and PVP at various weight fractions exhibited comparatively higher dissolution rates than that of crystalline IM alone. The sc-CO2 based process produced a solvent free, completely amorphous porous IM solid dispersion with a rapid dissolution rate.

For the first time, the MOCVD technique has been used to deposit carbonated hydroxyapatite onto Ti6AL4V substrates using volatile monomeric (liquid) complexes [Ca(beta-diketonate)(2)(L)] and P(OEt)(3).

Biodegradable polyurethanes: biodegradable low adherence films for the prevention of adhesions after surgery

Adhesions commonly occur after internal disease or surgery. The natural healing response leads to the formation of vascular and avascular adhesions after inflammatory diseases and surgical interventions. A barrier film could be incorporated during surgery between layers of tissues that must not adhere to one another. The film would be biodegradable so that it disappears over a period of time, and would ideally be two sided, allowing relative movement at that interface, while being firmly anchored on the opposite side to prevent displacement. Polyesterurethane-polydimethylsiloxane graft polymers are synthesised. Chemical characterisation of the polymer is performed by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. In vitro hydrolytic degradation is carried out in which films are immersed at 37 degrees C in alkaline solution. Degradation is assessed by tensile testing as a function of time to determine the degradation of mechanical strength, infrared spectroscopy, and mass loss. A titration method is also used to determine quantitatively the hydrolytic degradation. In order to study the adhesions of films, an in-vitro model based on a gelatine test, which is simple and rapid, is described. Suitable candidate films investigated from the in-vitro work are subjected to in vivo tests for both biodegradation and their ability to prevent adhesion.
