One known Sarcocystis species and one found for the first time in fallow deer (Dama dama)

Sarcocysts of free-ranging indigenous fallow deer (Dama d. dama) from northeast Germany and captive Persian fallow deer (Dama dama mesopotamica) from the Zoo Berlin-Friedrichsfelde were described using the transmission electron microscope. Two Sarcocystis species (Sporozoa, Sarcocystidae) were found in D. d. dama, one of them already known, the other new for this host. The known species was also found in D. dama mesopotamica. Comparing the literature, former own findings in roe deer, red deer or wapiti with the results reported in this paper, we conclude that the two Sarcocystis species should be designated as S. cf. grueneri (known in Dama but not named) and S. cf. hofmanni (new for Dama).

One known Sarcocystis species and two found for the first time in red deer and wapiti (Cervus elaphus) in Europe

Three species of sarcocysts from indigenous red deer and captive wapiti (Cervus elaphus, Cervidae) were characterized by means of light and electron microscopy. Two of them were found in this intermediate host species for the first time. Comparison of the literature and our results led to the conclusion that the three Sarcocystis species (Sporozoa, Sarcocystidae) should be provisionally designated as S. cf. grueneri, S. cf. capreolicanis and S. cf. hofmanni.

On the diagnostics and nomenclature of Sarcocystis species (Sporozoa) in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus)

Three species of sarcocysts from European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) are characterised using light and electron microscopy. The hitherto existing descriptions of four species are attributed to the actual state of nomenclature.

Chloromyxum sp. is described from the kidney of one to four years old brown trout from Thuringia. This species is not distinguishable from C. wardi by light microscopy, but is not identified here with that species because of the different location.

[The seasonal dynamics of the celozoic stages of Chloromyxum barbi (Myxosporidia) in Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Osteichthyes)]

The seasonal dynamics of C. barbi of two consecutive generations of one-summer old silver carps (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) from a winter basin was investigated. One maximum of intensity in spring (80 to 100%) and one minimum in summer to early autumn (20% to 0) shows a course of incidence with a pattern of a one-year-cycle of the patent (celozoic) infection in both silver carp populations. C. barbi was also observed in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) and bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis). A pathogenic influence of C. barbi to the three Far Eastern cyprinid fish species was not observed.

[The seasonal appearance of swim bladder inflammation in the course of Sphaerospora renicola infection in carp]

In carp during 1st year the course of dynamics of the 3 known stages of Sphaerospora renicola showed an increase of the kidney infection in winter and spring (with inhibited sporulation). The winter/spring-peak was accompanied by an intensive blood-phase (C-stages). After August of the 1st summer the swimbladder-phase (K-stages) was not observed, although SBI occurred between January and April. Under warm water condition this infection was discharged after September/October, the SBI never occurred after this time. In contrast to the 1st summer, affected kidneys were often found during winter and spring. In the period of the second outbreak of SBI, C-stages often occurred in the capillaries of swimbladder and in the kidney. The declining phases of SBI, observed from August to April, were not connected with the temperature conditions.

[Sarcocystis alceslatrans (Apicomplexa) from a palaearctic elk (Ruminantia)]

Sarcocysts from a palaearctic moose have been studied for the first time by light and electron microscopy. Because of coincidences in morphology of the cysts, especially of the cyst wall structure and the cystozoides, with the North American species Sarcocystis alceslatrans DUBEY, 1980, they are assigned to this species.

[Zschokkella (Protozoa: Myxosporea) in the gallbladder of Cyprinus carpio (Osteichthyes) in East Germany]

The gallbladder of two-yearling carps caught in a lake in the region of Frankfurt-on-Oder was found invaded with Zschokkella sp., which is the first case recorded in the German Democratic Republic.
