Abstract
The application of silicon nanocrystals (Si-NC) is somewhat limited due to their low luminescence intensity. Therefore, it is of interest to investigate methods for enhancing the luminescence intensity of Si-NC. In this study, phosphorus (P)-doped Si-NC with two different doping methods were prepared by electron beam thermal evaporation: in-situ doping (during synthesis) and ex-situ doping (after synthesis). The photoluminescence (PL) intensity and crystallinity of Si-NC can be enhanced through phosphorus doping. Moreover, a comparison between two different methods of Si-NC doping reveals that the luminescence intensity of in-situ P-doped Si-NC is superior to that of ex-situ P-doped Si-NC, which is increased by an order of magnitude compared to the PL intensity of undoped Si-NC.

Abstract
Mycoremediation of unsterilized PCDD/F-contaminated field soil was successfully demonstrated by solid-state fermentation coupled with Pleurotus pulmonarius utilizing a patented incubation approach. The experiments were carried out in four setups with two as controls. The contaminated soil was homogenously mixed with solid inocula, 1:0.5 dry w/w, resulting in an initial concentration of 4432 ± 623 ng WHO-TEQ kg-1. After a 30-day incubation under controlled conditions, the overall removal (approx. 60%) was non-specific. The removal was attributed to degradation by extracellular ligninolytic enzymes and uptake into the fruiting tissue (~110 ng WHO-TEQ kg-1 of mushroom). Furthermore, less recalcitrant chlorinated metabolites were found, implying ether bond cleavage and dechlorination happened during the mycoremediation. These metabolites resulted from the complex interaction between P. pulmonarius and the indigenous microbes from the unsterilized soil. This study provides a new step toward scaling up this mycoremediation technique to treat unsterilized PCDD/F-contaminated field soil.

Abstract
Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209), a congener of polybrominated diphenyl ethers, is a commonly used brominated flame retardant and a known endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC). Knowledge about the effects of prenatal BDE-209 exposure on male reproduction and whether transgenerational effects occur in subsequent generations are scant. Therefore, in this study, we tested the hypothesis that prenatal exposure to BDE-209 disrupted sperm function in the F1, F2, and F3 generations of male rats. Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were treated by gavage from gestation day 0 to birth with 5 mg BDE-209/kg/day. This treatment was based on the lowest-observed-adverse-effect level for DNA damage to sperm in male offspring. On postnatal day 84 for all generations, epididymal sperm counts, motility, morphology, reactive oxygen species generation, sperm chromatin DNA structure integrity, testicular DNA content in spermatogenesis, and serum testosterone levels were assessed. DNA methyltransferase (Dnmts) mRNA expression and methyl-CpG binding domain sequencing were also examined to analyze DNA methylation status in the F3 generation. In the F1 generation, prenatal exposure to BDE-209 disrupted body weight, decreased anogenital distance (AGD), sperm count, and motility; and increased bent tail rates of sperm. In the F2 generation, exposure to BDE-209 decreased AGD, sperm count, normal morphology rates, Dnmt1 expression, and increased Dnmt3a expression. In the F3 generation, BDE-209 exposure decreased AGD and normal sperm morphology, disrupted testicular elongated spermatid and round spermatid rates, reduced serum testosterone levels, and inhibited the mRNA expression of Dnmt1 and Dnmt3b. Compared with the control group, there existed 215 differentially hyper-methylated and 83 hypo-methylated genes in the BDE-209 group. BDE-209 is an EDC to disrupt the male reproduction from F1 to F3. BDE-209-induced changes in sperm function and hyper- or hypo-DNA methylation in the F3 generation might therefore explain the possible mechanism underlying BDE-209-mediated epigenetic transgenerational effects on the male reproductive system.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the applicability of different exposure assessment methods in occupational health risk assessment of trichloroethylene (TCE) occupation posts in electroplating enterprise. Methods: In November 2018, the occupational health risk assessments are conducted in trichloroethylene (TCE) occupation posts of 6 metal plating enterprises in a street in Shenzhen by using the qualitative risk assessment, semi-quantitative risk assessment (including contact ratio method, contact index method and synthesis index method) and quantitative risk assessment method (including non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk assessment methods) , and the results of different methods are compared. Results: The results of qualitative assessment method are all level 4 (high risk) ; the results of contact ratio method show that the risk level is level 5 (very high risk) ; the results of contact index method and Synthesis index method show that the risk level is level 3 and level 4, 66.7% and 33.3% respectively; Non-carcinogenic risk assessment results show that TCE jobs are "unacceptable"; carcinogenic risk assessment results in carcinogenic inhalation excess risk of 50% each being "unacceptable" and "acceptable". The results of the six risk assessment methods showed that there were 3 "substantially consistent", 1 "partially consistent", and 2 "inconsistent" among the 6 companies. Conclusion: Synthesis index method and the carcinogenic risk assessment method are more suitable for occupational health risks of TCE occupation posts.

Abstract
This study was performed to evaluate the use of white rot fungus, Pleurotus pulmonarius, to treat polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) in contaminated soil using solid state fermentation (SSF). The soil was collected from a long-closed pentachlorophenol plant in southern Taiwan. The non-sterilized soil with a total PCDD/F concentration of 14,000 ± 2400 ng I-TEQ kg-1 was mixed directly with the solid fungal inocula at dry w/w ratio of 1:1.4 (ratio-adjusted test) and incubated at 26 ± 2 °C in a controlled environment. The highest PCDD/F decomposition was observed during the mycelium colonization. Pearson correlation coefficient (r) studied during this period (35 days) indicated that laccase had no significant correlation (r = -0.53), while manganese peroxidase had a strong positive correlation (r = 0.88) with PCDD/F decomposition efficiency. After 72 days, the more toxic congeners, tetra- and penta-CDD/Fs were removed to non-detectable levels. Meanwhile, the removal efficiencies of hexa-, hepta-, and octa-CDD/Fs were >80%, >97%, and >90%, respectively. The simultaneous degradation of low and high chlorinated DD/Fs suggested that overall removal was nonspecific. The overall PCDD/F removal was 96%, and the residual concentration (276 ng I-TEQ kg-1) was below the regulatory control limit (1000 ng I-TEQ kg-1). In conclusion, this study shows that P. pulmonarius via SSF can successfully remediate the PCDD/F-contaminated field soil. Furthermore, this SSF technique overcame the well-known intractability of PCDD/F biodegradation in non-sterilized soil, making it promising for actual field application.

Abstract
This study investigated bacterial communities during aerobic food waste co-composting degradation of highly PCDD/F-contaminated field soil. The total initial toxic equivalent quantity (TEQ) of the soil was 16,004 ng-TEQ kg-1 dry weight. After 42-day composting and bioactivity-enhanced monitored natural attenuation (MNA), the final compost product's TEQ reduced to 1916 ng-TEQ kg-1 dry weight (approximately 75% degradation) with a degradation rate of 136.33 ng-TEQ kg-1 day-1. Variations in bacterial communities and PCDD/F degraders were identified by next-generation sequencing (NGS). Thermophilic conditions of the co-composting process resulted in fewer observed bacteria and PCDD/F concentrations. Numerous organic compound degraders were identified by NGS, supporting the conclusion that PCDD/Fs were degraded during food waste co-composting. Bacterial communities of the composting process were defined by four phyla (Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes). At the genus level, Bacillus (Firmicutes) emerged as the most dominant phylotype. Further studies on specific roles of these bacterial strains are needed, especially for the thermophiles which contributed to the high degradation rate of the co-co-composting treatment's first 14 days.

Abstract
In this work, the shock sensitivity of hexachlorodisilane (HCDS) hydrolysis products was studied. The hydrolysis conditions included vapor and liquid HCDS hydrolysis in moist air. Shock sensitivity was determined by using a Fall hammer apparatus. Extensive infrared studies were done for the hydrolysis products. It was found that the Si-Si bond in HCDS during hydrolysis is preserved and can be cleaved by shock, leading to intramolecular oxidation of the neighboring silanol (Si-OH) groups to form a networked Si-O-Si structure and hydrogen gas. The limiting impact energy for shock sensitivity was also found proportional to the oxygen/silicon ratio in the deposit. Finally, recommendations are given for controlling the shock sensitivity of the hydrolyzed deposit.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the relationship between abnormal angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) expression and invasion/metastasis of lung cancer. Methods: Totally 122 cases of postoperative primary lung cancer tissues and their paracancerous tissues from Jan. 2009 to Dec. 2010 were collected from Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University and Ang-2 expression was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. At the cellular level, the protein and mRNA levels of Ang-2 in lung epithelial cell line Beas-2B and four lung cancer cell lines (SPCA-1, NCI-1650, A549 and NCI-H1975) were observed. The most effective Ang-2-shRNA for Ang-2 transcription was screened and transfected into A 549 lung cancer cells. The Ang-2 expression, Ang-2 gene transcription, cell proliferation, invasion/metastasis, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) abilities of lung cancer cells were analyzed by Western blotting, fluorescent quantitative reverse transcriptase PCR, Cell Counting Kit-8 assay, and Transwell cell models for exploring the relationship between Ang-2 expression and invasion/metastasis of lung cancer. Results: The higher Ang-2 expression levels in lung cancerous tissues were closely related to tumor diameter (P=0.008), differentiating degree (P=0.033), TNM stage (P=0.025) and 5-year survival rate (P<0.001). According to the Kaplan-Meier survival curves, the 5-year survival rate of patients with higher expression levels of Ang-2 (16.1%) was significantly poorer than that of patients with lower Ang-2 (80.0%, P<0.001). Significant difference of 5-year survival rate was found in patients with different Ang-2 levels at TNM stage Ⅰ(P<0.001), but not at stage Ⅱ, Ⅲ and Ⅳ. Among Beas-2B and four lung cancer cell lines, the protein and mRNA levels of Ang-2 in A549 cells were the highest. After Ang-2-shRNA-1 plasmid successfully transfected into A549 cells, cell proliferation rate was significantly lower than that in the shRNA-negative or blank group at a time-dependent manner. The significant decrease of the invasion, migration and EMT abilities were also found in A549 cells after transfection of Ang-2 shRNA. Conclusion: Abnormal expression of Ang-2 is closely related to invasion, migration and prognosis of lung cancer, and interfering the activation of Ang-2 would be a novel molecular-targeted therapy for lung cancer.

Abstract
Objective To assess the relationship between emergency response time and prognosis of patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Design Systematic review. Methods Relevant observational studies were identified by a search of PubMed and ISI databases to 30 January 2014. Primary outcome was survival to discharge. The weighted mean differences (WMD) for response time were calculated for those survivals to discharge and death in hospital. We also carried out a dose response meta-analysis for assessing summary odds ratio (OR) of survival by response time. Results A total of 13 studies with 804,998 patients included in the meta-analysis. The WMD of response time between survivals to discharge group and death in hospital group was 1.976 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.161-2.792; p<0.001). Sensitivity analyses by only included prospective cohorts showed the WMD of response time between two groups was 1.115 (95% CI=0.508-1.723; p<0.001). Dose-response relationship between response time and survival to discharge risk was observed statistically significant (χ2=39.86, p<0.001). In linear model, the summary OR was 0.914 (95% CI=0.889-0.940) for every 1 minutes delay in response time. In spline model, the survival OR decreased along with the response time, especially when response time less than 7 minutes. Conclusions Emergency response time is an important risk factor for prognosis after OHCA in adults. The EMS team must arrive as soon as possible to the site of the event. Abstract
The remediation of dioxin-contaminated soil of a specific coastal area previously employed for the manufacture of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in southern Taiwan's Tainan City has attracted much attention of researchers there. This work addresses the possibility of providing an effective and environmentally friendly option for removing PCDD/Fs from soil in that field. Soil screening/sieving was first conducted to assess particle distribution. Fine sand was observed to be the major component of the soil, accounting for more than 60% of the total mass. A combination of ultrasonification and mechanical double-blade agitation was used to facilitate the washing of the soil using the biosurfactant anaerobic compost tea. More than 85 and 95% of total removal efficiencies were achieved for moderately and highly contaminated soils after 6 and 10 washing cycles, respectively, under ambient temperature, a soil/liquid ratio 1:2.5, 700 rpm, and over a relatively short duration. These results were achieved through the collision and penetration effects of this combined treatment as well as PCDD/F partitioning between the particles and anaerobic compost tea. This study represents the first to report the use of anaerobic compost tea solvent to wash soil highly contaminated by dioxin. It was concluded that anaerobic compost tea, rich in non-toxic bio-surfactants (e.g., alcohols, humic acids), can be used to improve bioavailability and bioactivity of the soil making bio-attenuation and full remediation more efficient.

Abstract
Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is the most crucial phthalate derivative added to polyvinyl chloride as a plasticizer. This study examined the effects of low-dose exposure to DEHP during adolescence on sperm function in adult rats. The male rats were daily gavaged with 30, 100, 300, and 1000 µg kg(-1) of DEHP or corn oil from postnatal day (PND) 42 until PND 105. The selection of DEHP doses ranged from the mean daily intake by the normal-population exposure levels to no-observed-adverse-effect level of DEHP for the endpoints evaluated until adulthood. Significant increases in the percentage of sperm with tail abnormality, tendency for sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI) and percentage of sperm with DFI were found in those exposed to 100, 300, and 1000 µg kg(-1) (P < 0.05). We observed a significant increase of hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) generation in the sperm of the 1000 µg kg(-1) group compared with the control group (P < 0.05). The excessive production of sperm H2 O2 coincided with an increase in sperm DFI. In this study, the lowest-observed-adverse-effect level for sperm toxicity was considered to be 100 µg DEHP/kg/day in sperm morphology and chromatin DNA damage. Abstract
Basal ganglia-thalamocortical circuits are multistage loops critical to motor behavior, but the contributions of individual components to overall circuit function remain unclear. We addressed these issues in a songbird basal ganglia-thalamocortical circuit (the anterior forebrain pathway, AFP) specialized for singing and critical for vocal plasticity. The major known afferent to the AFP is the premotor cortical nucleus, HVC. Surprisingly, previous studies found that lesions of HVC alter song but do not eliminate the ability of the AFP to drive song production. We therefore used this AFP-driven song to investigate the role of basal ganglia and thalamus in vocal structure, tempo, and initiation. We found that lesions of the striatopallidal component (Area X) slowed song and simplified its acoustic structure. Elimination of the thalamic component (DLM) further simplified the acoustic structure of song and regularized its rhythm but also dramatically reduced song production. The acoustic structure changes imply that sequential stages of the AFP each add complexity to song, but the effects of DLM lesions on song initiation suggest that thalamus is a locus of additional inputs important to initiation. Together, our results highlight the cumulative contribution of stages of a basal ganglia-thalamocortical circuit to motor output along with distinct involvement of thalamus in song initiation or "gating."

Abstract
Phytophthora capsici Leonion was first identified on pepper (Capsicum annuum L) in Taiwan in 1976. At that time, only the A1 mating type was present (2). In 2007, the A2 mating type of P. capsici was identified on tomato and eggplant in the central part of the country (1). During an excessively rainy period in mid-2008, many chili and sweet pepper fields in Taiwan suffered severe losses due to P. capsici. Symptoms included a foliar blight and stem, root, and fruit rot. Plants eventually wilted and died. Symptomatic plants were collected from chili- and sweet pepper-production areas in central, southern, and eastern Taiwan. Fifty-three isolates from single zoospores were identified by PCR using species-specific primers CAPFW/CAPRV2 (4). Mating type was determined by co-inoculating rape seed agar plates (3) with mycelial plugs of the tester and a known isolate. Pc134, maintained by the mycology unit at The World Vegetable Center, and 27220, provided by P. J. Ann at the Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute, were used as reference isolates of A1 and A2 mating types, respectively. Plates were examined microscopically for oospores after 5 to 7 days of incubation at 24°C in the dark. Of the 53 isolates, 15 were identified as the A2 mating type and the remaining 38 isolates were identified as A1. The A2 mating type was found in the central and southern regions while the A1 mating type was widely distributed across all three regions. The sporangia of the A2 mating type were 60.4 to 73.4 × 40.9 to 51.8 μm (average 69.2 × 44.7 μm), whereas sporangia of the A1 mating type were 50.1 to 73.9 × 37.9 to 48.1 μm (average 61.4 × 44.1 μm). In general, the A2 mating type produced longer sporangia and only a few isolates produced chlamydospores in V8 broth and on agar. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the A2 mating type of P. capsici infecting peppers in Taiwan. The presence of both mating types in the same field has been observed. References: (1) P. Abstract
BACKGROUND Hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) is characterized genetically by germline mutations in DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) has high sensitivity and specificity for identifying MMR-deficient tumours. This study investigated the clinical presentations and frequency of HNPCC in Taiwan by combined Amsterdam II criteria (AC-II) and IHC. METHODS In 1995-2003, 7108 patients with primary colorectal cancer registered in Chang Gung Memorial Hospital's Colorectal Cancer Registry were screened using AC-II. Tumour specimens were analysed for MMR protein expression by IHC, and relevant clinicopathological details were documented. RESULTS Some 83 patients fulfilled the AC-II. Clinicopathologically, 43 patients (52 per cent) had proximal tumours, ten (12 per cent) had poorly differentiated cancers, 17 (20 per cent) had mucinous adenocarcinoma and 51 (61 per cent) had stage I-II tumours. Seventeen patients developed second primary colonic and extracolonic cancers over a mean 7.2-year follow-up. Immunohistochemically, 58 patients were MMR protein deficient. They had a significantly earlier age of onset (P < 0.001), more proximal tumour location (P = 0.002), less advanced tumour stage (P = 0.008) and more second primary cancers (P = 0.017) compared with MMR-competent patients. CONCLUSION These data show significant differences in clinical features between MMR protein-deficient and MMR competent subgroups.

Abstract
The ability of extracellular ATP to increase the cation permeability of a variety of fresh and cultured cells has been known for decades, but evidence of a separate class of P2 purinoceptor, termed P2Z, which mediates this effect has only recently been obtained. Several features of the P2Z purinoceptor clearly distinguish it from other P2 purinoceptors and show that it is a ligand-gated ion channel. P2Z purinoceptors are highly selective for the ATP4- species and addition of Mg2+ in excess over ATP closes the channel. The most potent agonist is 3'-O-(4-benzoyl)benzoyl ATP which has a 10-fold lower EC50 than ATP. Ca2+ is the preferred permeant for the P2Z ion channel although it will pass ions up to the size of ethidium(+) (314 Da) in lymphocytes or fura-2 (813 Da) in macrophages. The inhibitors of the P2Z purinoceptor or its associated ion channel include suramin, amiloride analogues, high extracellular Na+ concentrations and 2',3'-dialdehyde ATP (oxidized ATP), which blocks irreversibly. Occupancy of P2Z purinoceptors stimulates a phospholipase D activity, which may be involved in membrane remodelling. Moreover, extracellular ATP causes loss of the glycosylated adhesion molecule L-selection from the surfaces of human lymphocytes by enzymic cleavage, suggesting a possible role for P2Z purinoceptors in intercellular interactions.

Abstract
A framework of correlation for estimating the amount of waste generation from floods is developed. Flood waste data were collected from four recent typhoons in Taiwan. Parameters affecting the flood waste are analyzed. Population density, flooded area and amount of total rainfall are chosen as the correlating parameters for the model development, and regression diagnostics are performed to check the validity of the collected data. The simple linear model is shown to be incapable of correlating the flood waste data. An exponential model is proposed and shown to give acceptable correlation with the flood waste data spanning five orders of magnitude. The model can be useful in the planning of waste cleanup after floods.

Abstract
2,2',3,3',4,4',5,5',6,6'-Decabrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE 209) is the second most used brominated flame retardant (BFRs) in constructed materials because it is considered less toxic than others, though other fire retardants, some congeners of PBDE 209, are reported to be toxic. This combined the fact that PBDE 209 has been found in high levels in human milk, blood, indoor environments as well as in foodstuffs has led us in this study attempt to find out whether PBDE 209, also known as decaBDE and decabrominated diphenyl oxide (DBDPO), has an adverse effect on this histology of testes and sperm in CD-1 male mice. The mice we studied were divided into groups and gavaged with 10, 100, 500 and 1500 mg/kg PBDE 209 in corn oil per day between postnatal Days 21 and 70. On Day 71, the mice were anesthetized and sperm function, testis DNA content, and histopathology were studied. We found in the 500- and 1500-mg/kg/day groups that neonatal exposure to PBDE 209 reduced sperm epididymal sperm mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), reduced amplitude of the lateral head displacement (ALH) and induced the generation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the sperm of sexually mature male mice, without affecting the sperm count, motility, morphology, curvilinear velocity (VCL), angular progressive velocity (VAP), straight-line velocity (VSL), beat-cross frequency (BCF), sperm chromatin structure assay (SCSA), superoxide anion (O2-*) generation, DNA content in testis cells, or testicular histopathology. ALH was positively associated with an increase in MMP and negatively associated with generation of sperm H2O2. The reduction of MMP was negatively associated with an increase in generation of sperm H2O2. The presence of the relationships between sperm ALH, MMP, and generation of H2O2 indicate toxic action possibly resulting from PBDE 209-induced oxidative stress. In conclusion, this is the first study to report the lowest-observed-adverse-effect level (LOAEL) for sperm function to be 500 mg/kg of PBDE 209 in male mice. Decreased epididymal sperm MMP and ALH as well as induced generation of sperm H2O2 were some of the most serious effects of postnatal PBDE 209 exposure. Future investigations should be performed to study the effects of prenatal exposure of PBDE 209 and the mechanism behind PBDE 209-related oxidative stress in the fetal and pubertal stages of development.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim was to determine whether occupational exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in men has adverse effect on semen quality. METHODS Forty-eight coke-oven workers, including 16 topside-oven (TO) workers and 32 sideoven (SO) workers, were studied. Ambient PAHs exposure, urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) levels, and parameters of semen quality were determined. RESULTS TO workers had significantly higher ambient PAHs exposure (3,436.1+/-3,411.0 vs. 1,123.1+/-1,829.3 ng/m3, P < 0.01), urinary 1-OHP levels (207.8+/-176.4 vs. 54.0+/-44.8 microg/g, P < 0.001), frequency of oligospermia (18.8 vs. 0%, P < 0.05), and morphological abnormality in sperm (32.3 vs. 14.6%, P < 0.01) than SO workers. Among cigarette smokers, TO workers had significantly higher rates of DNA denaturation in spermatozoa (alphaT) and percentage of sperm with increased DNA denaturation (COMP alphaT) levels than SO workers (246.2+/-49.5 vs. 198.1+/-30.3 for alphaT; 34.8+/-14.4 vs. 19.3+/-13.9% for COMP alphaT, P < 0.05). There was a positive correlation between urinary 1-OHP and alphaT, COMP alphaT, and abnormal sperm morphology and a tenfold increase in urinary 1-OHP associated with a 2.35-fold increase in alphaT, as well as a 1.07-fold increase in percentage of sperm with abnormal morphology. CONCLUSIONS A potential risk of sperm dysfunction should be considered for workers occupationally exposed to high levels of PAHs. Cigarette smoking may aggravate this risk. Urinary 1-OHP can be used as a biomarker predicting sperm dysfunction.

Abstract
Cervical cancer has been one of the most important gynecologic cancer in Taiwan with incidence of 24/100,000 and mortality of 8.7/100,000 annually. About 70-80% are squamous cell carcinoma; the remainder are composed of various types of adenocarcinoma, adenosquamous carcinoma and undifferentiated carcinoma. The Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) class I chain-related gene A (MICA) is expressed by keratinocytes and epithelial cells and interacts with gamma-delta T cells. Although MICA was not associated with cervical cancer in the study of Northern Sweden, there are no further studies about the association of MICA polymorphism and the different histological types of cervical cancer. We analyzed the MICA polymorphism in 110 cervical cancer cases (88 squamous cell carcinoma, 12 adenocarcinoma and 10 adenosquamous carcinoma) and 82 randomly selected unrelated controls from 1994 to 2000 in the Mackay Memorial Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan. DNA was extracted part from leukocytes of peripheral blood, part from tumor tissue and 5 polymorphic microsatellite alleles (A4,A5,A5.1,A6,A9) of MICA were identified by a polymerase chain reaction-based (PCR) technique using ABI Prism 377-18 DNA sequencer (Applied Biosystems, Foster City, CA, USA). The phenotypes, alleles and genotypes of MICA gene were calculated. There was no association with cervical cancer patients and non-cervical cancer patients (p=0.337, 0.356 and 0.414). After dividing the cervical cancer patients into 3 major histological types (squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and adenosquamous carcinoma), the result was still the same (p=0.598, 0.172 and 0.617) in our study. We found no association between MICA gene polymorphism and cervical cancer in Taiwan. Different histological types of cervical cancer also have no significant correlation with MICA gene polymorphism. It demonstrates that polymorphism of MICA gene bears no relation to cervical cancer and the different histological types of cervical cancer in Taiwan. We need further studies for identifying the factors causing the differentiation of cancer cells of the uterine cervix.

Abstract
The probability formula of the direct-method SAD (single-wavelength anomalous diffraction) phasing proposed by Fan & Gu (1985, Acta Cryst. A41, 280-284) contains an error term which is related to the lack-of-closure error. This error term is used as a weighting function in the phase derivation and in the subsequent calculation of electron-density maps. Previously, there has been a constant in the error term that has had to be determined empirically for each particular case. It has been found that improper choice of the constant often leads to failure of the direct-method SAD phasing. The problem is resolved by introducing a modified error term and a method of automatically tuning the associated scaling factor.

Abstract

A41, 280-284) contains partial-structure information in the form of a Sim-weighting term. Previously, only the substructure of anomalous scatterers has been included in this term. In the case that the subsequent density modification and model building yields only structure fragments, which do not straightforwardly lead to the complete solution, the partial structure can be fed back into the Sim-weighting term of the probability formula in order to strengthen its phasing power and to benefit the subsequent automatic model building. The procedure has been tested with experimental SAD data from two known proteins with copper and sulfur as the anomalous scatterers.

Abstract
In the initial stage of SAD phasing, the essential point is to break the intrinsic phase ambiguity. The presence of two kinds of phase information enables the discrimination of phase doublets from SAD data prior to density modification. One is from the heavy atoms (anomalous scatterers), while the other is from the direct-methods phase relationships. The former can be expressed by the Sim distribution, while the latter can be expressed by the Cochran distribution. Typically, only the Sim distribution has been used to yield initial phases for subsequent density modification. However, it has been demonstrated that using direct-methods phases based on the product of the Sim and Cochran distributions can lead to improved initial phases. In this paper, the direct-methods phasing procedure OASIS has been improved and combined with the SOLVE/RESOLVE procedure. Experimental SAD data from three known proteins with expected Bijvoet ratios </DeltaF/>/<F> in the range 1.4-7.0% were used as test cases. In all cases, the phases obtained using the program RESOLVE beginning with initial phases based on experimental phases plus Sim and direct-methods information were more accurate than those based on experimental plus Sim phase information alone.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In this study, the influences of externally imposed constant torque on the voluntary elbow movements of stroke and normal subjects were investigated quantitatively. BACKGROUND Muscle weakness, spasticity and incoordination are the major factors that interfere with stroke patient's limb functions. Imposing external torque disturbance may worsen the motor performance. This experiment was designed to investigate the effects of small constant external torque on the performance of voluntary elbow movements. METHODS Tracking of a ramp-and-hold angle trajectory in the direction of extension was used as the main task for performance assessment. Each subject repeated the same tracking movement six times in each of three loading conditions: no, assistive or resistive loading. Five normal and six stroke subjects were recruited for this study. We used parameters extracted from movement trajectory and processed electromyograms as the performance indicators. RESULTS For normal subjects, there was no difference in the tracking performance in the three loading conditions. For stroke patients, the affected side had inferior performance to the healthy side in the free loading condition and the difference diminished in assistive and resistive loading conditions as the performance of the affected side improved. Integrated electromyograms of biceps or triceps did not show significant changes in different loading conditions. CONCLUSIONS Small externally imposed constant torque, either resistive or assistive, may improve motor performance of affected elbows in stroke patients. RELEVANCE Most of the currently available prostheses are passive devices, aiming at providing better support and improving stability. The results of the current study imply that an active prosthetic device that applies a small constant torque to the hemiparetic elbow can improve its motor performance in stroke patients. The direction of external torque is to assist the weaker side of the antagonistic muscle pair.

Abstract
We show that sex steroids protect the adult murine skeleton through a mechanism that is distinct from that used to preserve the mass and function of reproductive organs. The classical genotropic actions of sex steroid receptors are dispensable for their bone protective effects, but essential for their effects on reproductive tissues. A synthetic ligand (4-estren-3alpha,17beta-diol) that reproduces the nongenotropic effects of sex steroids, without affecting classical transcription, increases bone mass and strength in ovariectomized females above the level of the estrogen-replete state and is at least as effective as dihydrotestosterone in orchidectomized males, without affecting reproductive organs. Such ligands merit investigation as potential therapeutic alternatives to hormone replacement for osteoporosis in both women and men [corrected].

Abstract
Insulin resistance has been suggested to be associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. Insulin sensitivity can be measured using blood C-peptide, a marker of insulin secretion. It is thus conceivable that blood C-peptide levels may be associated with breast cancer risk. To evaluate this hypothesis, we analyzed data from a subset (143 case-control pairs matched by age and status of menopause) of women who participated in the Shanghai Breast Cancer Study, a population-based, case-control study conducted in Shanghai during 1996-1998. Fasting blood samples were collected from study subjects to measure C-peptide levels. For cancer patients, the samples were collected before any cancer therapy. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals related to C-peptide levels. Breast cancer risk was increased with increasing levels of C-peptide (trend test, P = 0.01), with an odds ratio of 2.7 (95% confidence interval = 1.2-5.9) observed for the highest compared with the lowest tertile of C-peptide concentration after adjusting for body mass index and age at the first live birth. The risk was not altered after fully adjusting for other traditional risk factors for breast cancer. This positive association was observed in both pre and postmenopausal women and regardless of the levels of waist-to-hip ratio or body mass index. The results from this study were consistent with the insulin-resistance hypothesis for breast cancer and suggest that increased levels of C-peptide may contribute to the development of breast cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE This study was designed to assess the accuracy of transcranial color-coded sonography (TCCS) as compared to magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) for detecting intracranial arterial stenosis in patients with acute cerebral ischemia. METHODS The authors prospectively identified 120 consecutive patients admitted with acute ischemic stroke and performed both TCCS and MRA with a mean interval of 1 day. TCCS data (sampling depth, peak systolic and end diastolic angle-corrected velocity, mean angle-corrected velocity, and pulsatility index) for middle cerebral arteries (MCAs) were compared to MRA data and classified into 4 grades: normal (grade 1): normal caliber and signal; mild stenosis (grade 2): irregular lumen with reduced signal; severe stenosis (grade 3): absent signal in the stenotic segment (flow gap) and reconstituted distal signal; and possible occlusion (grade 4): absent signal. The cutoffs were chosen to maximize diagnostic accuracy. RESULTS Interobserver agreement for MRA grading resulted in a weighted-kappa value of 0.776. The rate of poor temporal window was 37% (89/240). Doppler signals were obtained in 135 vessels, and the angle-corrected velocities (peak systolic, end diastolic, mean) were significantly different (P = .001, P = .006, and P < .001) among the MRA grades: grade 1 (100, 47, 68 cm/s), grade 2 (171, 72, 110 cm/s), grade 3 (226, 79, 134 cm/s), grade 4 (61, 26, 39 cm/s). Additionally, an angle-corrected MCA peak systolic velocity > or = 120 cm/s correlates with intracranial stenosis on MRA (grade 2 or worse) with high specificity (90.5%; 95% confidence interval = 78.5%-96.8%) and positive predictive value (93.9%) but relatively low sensitivity (66.7%; 95% confidence interval = 61.2%-69.5%) and negative predictive value (55.1%). CONCLUSION Elevated MCA velocities on TCCS correlate with intracranial stenosis detected on MRA. An angle-corrected peak systolic velocity > or = 120 cm/s is highly specific for detecting intracranial stenosis as defined by significant MRA abnormality.

Abstract
The synthesis, photophysical properties of diphenyl-2,3-dihydroxychlorin (DPCOH) and its photocytotoxicity to tumor cells are described. DPCOH exhibits photodynamic activity in terms of type I and type II mechanisms under irradiation. The quantum yield of (1)O(2) in CHCl(3) is 0.7. For the photocytotoxicity to tumor cells, DPCOH proved to be 200 times more potent than HPD, and the dark toxicity is low (dark IC(90)>32 microg/mL).

Abstract
Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) expression in the uterus is essential for embryo implantation in mice. Here we describe the spatial and temporal regulation of LIF signaling in vivo by using tissues isolated from uteri on different days over the implantation period. During this time, LIF receptors are expressed predominantly in the luminal epithelium (LE) of the uterus. Isolated epithelium responds to LIF by phosphorylation and nuclear translocation of signal transducer and activator of transcription (Stat) 3, but not by an increase in mitogen-activated protein kinase levels. The related cytokines Il-6, ciliary neurotrophic factor, as well as epidermal growth factor, do not activate Stat3, although epidermal growth factor stimulates mitogen-activated protein kinase. In vivo Stat3 activation is induced by LIF alone, resulting in the localization of Stat3 specifically to the nuclei of the LE coinciding with the onset of uterine receptivity. The responsiveness of the LE to LIF is regulated temporally, with Stat activation being restricted to day 4 of pregnancy despite the presence of constant levels of LIF receptor throughout the preimplantation period. Uterine receptivity is therefore under dual control and is regulated by both the onset of LIF expression in the endometrial glands and the release from inhibition of receptor function in the LE.

Abstract
The peptidic fractions that inhibited angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) were separated from the peptic digests of 2 microalgae, Chlorella vulgaris and Spirulina platensis, by ion exchange chromatography and gel filtration. Oral administration of peptidic fractions into spontaneously hypertensive rats at 200 mg/kg of body weight resulted in marked antihypertensive effects. Further separation of the peptidic fractions by ODS high-performance liquid chromatography furnished the following active peptides: Ile-Val-Val-Glu (inhibitory against ACE with an IC(50) of 315.3 microM), Ala-Phe-Leu (63.8 microM), Phe-Ala-Leu (26.3 microM), Ala-Glu-Leu (57.1 microM), and Val-Val-Pro-Pro-Ala (79.5 microM) from C. vulgaris; Ile-Ala-Glu (34.7 microM), Phe-Ala-Leu, Ala-Glu-Leu, Ile-Ala-Pro-Gly (11.4 microM), and Val-Ala-Phe (35.8 microM) from S. platensis.
