Factors associated with HPV vaccination initiation among United States college students

Human papillomavirus (HPV) remains the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the U.S. despite widespread availability of a safe, effective vaccine. Although young adults are at greatest risk of HPV infection, extensive vaccine promotion and intervention efforts has been directed toward 11-12-year-olds. College students represent an ideal audience for HPV vaccine "catch-up;" however, research indicates inconsistent HPV vaccination rates within this demographic. An online survey assessing HPV and HPV vaccine knowledge and behaviors was distributed to all undergraduate college students at a large, public university in the Deep South region of the U.S. The primary outcome was receipt of HPV vaccination (binary response options of Yes/No). Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine predictors of HPV vaccination. Of the 1,725 who completed the survey, 47.0% reported having received at least one dose of HPV vaccine; overall series completion (series = 3 doses for this population) was 17.4%. The primary outcome was HPV initiation among college students, defined as having received at least one dose of the HPV vaccine. Results indicated substantial gaps in participants' knowledge of their vaccination status. Provider and parental recommendations as well as social influences were shown to significantly impact student vaccination status, emphasizing the importance of incorporating these elements in future interventions, potentially as multi-level strategies. Future college interventions should address HPV and vaccination knowledge and the importance of provider and parental recommendations.

Common responses of cultured soybean cells to 2,4-D starvation and fungal elicitor treatment

The patterns of in vivo protein synthesis in soybean cell suspensions were compared by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis after the cells had been submitted to different stress conditions : treatment with Phytophthora megasperma (Pmg) cell wall elicitors, 2,4-D starvation and heat shock (HS) temperatures. Changes in protein synthesis patterns induced after elicitation of cell suspensions or after infection of soybean hypocotyls by Pmg were found to be similar to changes brought about by auxin starvation of the cells. Changes common to both stress situations involve a prominent 17 kDa peptide family and 27, 29, 35 and about 45 kDa peptides. Moreover, "defense" reactions, i.e. glyceollin accumulation and synthesis of chalcone synthase (CHS) were also strongly stimulated in auxin-starved cells. On the contrary, although characteristic sets of low molecular weight heat shock (HS) proteins were synthesized by cells grown at 37°C, no clear similarity was observed with peptides characteristic of auxin-starved cells.

Rehabilitation in spinal cord injury: use of a patient-family group

A 1-day group meeting for spinal cord injured individuals and their families was initiated approximately 3 years ago with emphasis on providing information and sharing mutual concerns and feelings. From the results of tests administered before and after the program and of evaluation forms filled out by all participants, the Family Group has been found to be a useful adjunct to the rehabilitation program. Family members are effectively and meaningfully involved in the total rehabilitation process with the added benefit of decreasing their feelings of anxiety, helplessness and isolation. Evaluation suggests that the Family Group increases the individual's knowledge and awareness of a disability and its implications. It has introduced important topics of discussion within the family unit and has aided in more open communication among family members surrounding these issues. All of these benefits, combined, have resulted in more effective, realistic and appropriate discharge planning for patients.
