On the Catalytic Performance of (ZrO)n (n=1-4) Clusters for CO Oxidation: A DFT Study

The unique characteristic of superatoms to show chemical properties like those of individual atoms opens a new avenue towards replacing noble metals as catalysts. Given the similar electronic structures of the ZrO superatom and the Pd atom, the CO oxidation mechanisms catalysed by (ZrO)_n (n=1-4) clusters were investigated in detail to evaluate their catalytic performance. Our results reveal that a single ZrO superatom exhibits superior catalytic ability in CO oxidation than both larger (ZrO)_n (n=2-4) clusters and a Pd atom, indicating the promising potential of ZrO as a "single-superatom catalyst". Moreover, the mechanism of CO oxidation catalysed by ZrO^+/- suggests that depositing a ZrO superatom onto the electron-rich substrates is a better choice for practical catalysis application. Accordingly, a graphene nanosheet (coronene) was chosen as a representative substrate for ZrO and Pd to assess their catalytic performances in CO oxidation. Acting as an "electron sponge", this carbon substrate can both donate and accept charges in different reaction steps, enabling the supported ZrO to achieve enhanced catalytic performance in this process with a low energy barrier of 19.63 kcal/mol. This paper presents a new realization on the catalytic performance of Pd-like superatom in CO oxidation, which could increase the interests in exploring noble metal-like superatoms as efficient catalysts for various reactions.

Designing Special Nonmetallic Superalkalis Based on a Cage-like Adamanzane Complexant

In this study, to examine the possibility of using cage-like complexants to design nonmetallic superalkalis, a series of X@3⁶adz (X = H, B, C, N, O, F, and Si) complexes have been constructed and investigated by embedding nonmetallic atoms into the 3⁶adamanzane (3⁶adz) complexant. Although X atoms possess very high ionization energies, these resulting X@3⁶adz complexes possess low adiabatic ionization energies (AIEs) of 0.78–5.28 eV. In particular, the adiabatic ionization energies (AIEs) of X@3⁶adz (X = H, B, C, N, and Si) are even lower than the ionization energy (3.89 eV) of Cs atoms, and thus, can be classified as novel nonmetallic superalkalis. Moreover, due to the existence of diffuse excess electrons in B@3⁶adz, this complex not only possesses pretty low AIE of 2.16 eV but also exhibits a remarkably large first hyperpolarizability (β₀) of 1.35 × 10⁶ au, indicating that it can also be considered as a new kind of nonlinear optical molecule. As a result, this study provides an effective approach to achieve new metal-free species with an excellent reducing capability by utilizing the cage-like organic complexants as building blocks.

Analysis of the drug-resistant characteristics of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from the respiratory tract and CTX-M ESBL genes

The main aim of this study was to understand the relationship between the drug-resistant characteristics of Klebsiella pneumoniae and CTX-M-type extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs), and to detect the distributions of CTX-M-type ESBLs in clinically isolated strains. CTX-M ESBL genes isolated from the clinical samples were amplified by polymerase chain reaction and identified by sequence analysis; the antibiotic susceptibility of the samples was determined using the Kirby-Bauer disc-diffusion method. One hundred and five strains among the 246 isolated strains of K. pneumoniae tested positive for ESBL production (42.68%); 92 of these produced CTX-M ESBLs. Of the 92 CTX-M ESBL strains, 81 produced CTX-M-1 ESBLs and 11 produced CTX-M-25 ESBLs. Fifty-seven of the CTX-M-1 ESBL- and six of the CTX-M-25 ESBL-producing bacteria had CTX-M ESBL genes that coexisted in the plasmid and chromosome. The Kirby-Bauer antibiotic susceptibility method revealed that CTX-M ESBL-positive strains showed a higher rate of resistance to cefazolin, cefoxitin, cefuroxime, ceftazidime, cefotaxime, aztreonam, levofloxacin, and cotrimoxazole, compared to the CTX-M ESBL-negative strains (P < 0.05). The CTX-M ESBL genes were commonly observed in the K. pneumoniae isolated from respiratory tract samples; these were significantly associated with the drug-resistant characteristics of K. pneumoniae to β-lactam antibiotics.

Severe reversible bone marrow suppression induced by Selaginella doederleinii

CASE REPORT

We report a 52-year-old female patient with cholangiocarcinoma who developed severe bone marrow suppression after taking Selaginella doederleinii as an alternative anticancer treatment. She developed severe pancytopenia with initial presentations of skin ecchymosis, itching, and gum bleeding 2 weeks after taking Selaginella doederleinii daily. Bone marrow smear and biopsy showed severe hypocellularity with no malignant cell infiltration. Approximately 1 week after stopping Selaginella doederleinii, her hemogram returned to previous levels. Selaginella doederleinii, a popular anticancer herb, may contain an as yet unidentified substance that contributes to reversible bone marrow suppression.

Polymorphism of IgE gene in chronic urticaria

Our aim was to determine whether heterogeneity of the IgE (C epsilon) gene could be demonstrated in patients with chronic urticaria (CU). We performed Southern blots on DNA extracted from peripheral blood leucocytes of 20 patients with CU and 20 normal controls. Using a human C epsilon gene probe containing four exons of the constant segment of the IgE heavy chain, we showed the presence of a restriction fragment length polymorphism of the C epsilon gene segment in four of 20 patients with CU, but in none of 20 normal subjects. Family studies of two propositi revealed the presence of this C epsilon gene polymorphism in other family members. Our data show that a proportion of patients with CU have a polymorphism of the constant segment of the C epsilon gene. Further studies of this polymorphic gene fragment indicated that it was derived from duplication of the 3rd and 4th exons of functional C epsilon gene and was very likely to be located close to this gene. It raises the possibility that polymorphism of the functional C epsilon gene may affect expression of this gene. This could possibly lead to dysfunctional IgE-receptor interaction with consequent alteration in mediator release.

The saturated response of vertebrate rods and its relation to cGMP metabolism

Strong light flashes saturate the response of a rod, and increasing flash intensities prolong the period of saturation. We have found that the period of saturation lengthens from base to tip of the outer segment and we have shown that free cGMP is replenished locally to terminate saturation and not in the G-cyclase rich axonemal region near the inner segment which contains the cell mitochondria. Our results also show that each section of outer segment acts as an independent module in this phase of transduction.

Ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation detection by a sequential hypothesis testing algorithm

An algorithm for detecting ventricular fibrillation (VF) and ventricular tachycardia (VT) by the method of sequential hypothesis testing is presented. The algorithm first generates a binary sequence by comparing the signal to a threshold. The probability distribution of the time intervals of the binary sequence is obtained, and Wald's sequential hypothesis testing procedure is next employed to discriminate the arrhythmias. Sequential hypothesis testing of 85 cases resulted in identification of 1) 97.64% VF and 97.65% VT episodes after 5 s, and 2) 100% identification of both VF and VT after 7 s. The desired false positive and false negative error probabilities can be preprogrammed into the algorithm. An important feature of the sequential method is that extra time for detection can be traded off for improved accuracy, and vice versa.
