The Mechanical, Thermal, and Biological Properties of Materials Intended for Dental Implants: A Comparison of Three Types of Poly(aryl-ether-ketones) (PEEK and PEKK)

Regarding the dynamic development of 3D printing technology, as well as its application in a growing part of industries, i.e., in the automotive industry, construction industry, medical industry, etc., there is a notable opportunity for its application in producing dental implants, which presents a promising alternative to traditional implant manufacturing methods. The medical industry is very restrictive regarding the applied materials, and it is necessary to use materials that exhibit very good mechanical and thermal parameters, show clinical indifference and biocompatibility, are non-allergenic and non-cancerous, and are likely to sterilize. Such materials are poly(aryl-ether-ketone)s (PAEK)s, mainly poly(ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK) and poly(ether-ketone-ketone) (PEKK), that are found to be high-performance polymers and can be defined as materials that retain their functionality even in extreme conditions. In the present paper, two types of PEEKs and PEKK were compared regarding their structural, mechanical, and thermal properties along with the biological activity toward selected strains. The tested samples were obtained with Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technology. The PEKK, after heat treatment, exhibits the most promising mechanical properties as well as less bacterial adhesion on its surface when compared to both PEEKs. Consequently, among the evaluated materials, PEKK after heat treatment stands out as the optimal selection for a dental prosthesis.

Towards Highly Efficient, Additively Manufactured Passive Vibration Eliminators for Mechanical Systems

Structural damping largely determines the dynamic properties of mechanical structures, especially those whose functioning is accompanied by time-varying loads. These loads may cause vibrations of a different nature, which adversely affects the functionality of the structure. Therefore, many studies have been carried out on vibration reduction methods over the last few years. Among them, the passive vibration damping method, wherein a suitable polymer system with appropriate viscoelastic properties is used, emerges as one of the simplest and most effective methods. In this view, a novel approach to conduct passive elimination of vibrations, consisting of covering elements of structures with low dynamic stiffness with polymeric pads, was developed. Herein, polymer covers were manufactured via fused filament fabrication technology (3D printing) and were joined to the structure by means of a press connection. Current work was focused on determining the damping properties of chosen polymeric materials, including thermoplastic elastomers (TPE). All investigated materials were characterized by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), and mechanical properties (tensile test and Shore hardness). Lastly, the damping ability of pads made from different types of polymers were evaluated by means of dynamic tests.

Adiponectin is unrelated to kidney function or injury markers in renal transplant recipients: A one-year follow-up study

BACKGROUND

Adiponectin (ADPN) is a biologically active cytokine produced by adipose tissue. This protein exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antifibrotic, and insulin-sensitizing properties. As ADPN is primarily eliminated by the kidneys, it is a potential biomarker of chronic kidney disease progression. This study aimed to analyze the fluctuations in ADPN levels after kidney transplantation during a one-year follow-up and to compare them to significant renal (eGFR, NGAL) and metabolic (insulin, glucose, lipids, HOMA-IR) markers.

METHODS

Insulin, ADPN, NGAL, and basic biochemical parameters were evaluated in 51 healthy controls and 39 patients right before kidney transplantation and at five time points following transplantation (5-7 days, one month, three months, six months, and twelve months).

RESULTS

Mean ADPN levels dropped significantly right after transplantation (from 35.449 to 30.920 µg/ml, p = 0.001) and decreased gradually over a year. From the third month after the transplantation, ADPN levels were comparable to healthy individuals. At the pre-transplant time point, ADPN correlated only with insulin (r = -0.60, p < 0.001) and HOMA-IR (r = -0.55, p < 0.001). At the timepoints after transplantation, ADPN correlated only with NGAL at three months (r = -0.70, p = 0.048). The correlation of ADPN with HOMA-IR found at pre-transplant was not significant at any post-transplant time point, but at one and three months after transplant, the correlations reached a borderline significance (p = 0.07 and p = 0.08, respectively).

CONCLUSIONS

Successful kidney transplantation is followed by a gradual and significant ADPN decrease. In pre- and post-transplant patients, ADPN is unrelated to kidney function defined by GFR, but to glucose metabolism. Most of the analyzed metabolic and kidney parameters, apart from NGAL, stabilize within three months after transplantation.

An Interactive Haptic Guidance System for Intuitive Programming CNC Machine Tool

The human-machine interfaces in modern CNC machine tools are not very intuitive and still based on archaic input systems, i.e., switches, handwheels, and buttons. This type of solution has two major drawbacks. The pushed button activates the movement only in one direction and is insensitive to the amount of the force exerted by the operator, which makes it difficult to move the machine axes at variable speeds. The paper proposes a novel and intuitive system of manual programming of a CNC machine tool based on a control lever with strain-gauge sensors. The presented idea of manual programming is aimed at eliminating the need to create a machining program and at making it possible to move the machine intuitively, eliminating mistakes in selecting directions and speeds. The article describes the concept of the system and the principle of operation of the control levers with force sensors. The final part of the work presents the experimental validation of the proposed system and a functionality comparison with the traditional CNC control.
