Controlling the volume fraction of glass-forming colloidal suspensions using thermosensitive host "mesogels"

The key parameter controlling the glass transition of colloidal suspensions is φ, the fraction of the sample volume occupied by the particles. Unfortunately, changing φ by varying an external parameter, e.g., temperature T as in molecular glass formers, is not possible, unless one uses thermosensitive colloidal particles, such as the popular poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNiPAM) microgels. These, however, have several drawbacks, including high deformability, osmotic deswelling, and interpenetration, which complicate their use as a model system to study the colloidal glass transition. Here, we propose a new system consisting of a colloidal suspension of non-deformable spherical silica nanoparticles, in which PNiPAM hydrogel spheres of ∼100-200μm size are suspended. These non-colloidal "mesogels" allow for controlling the sample volume effectively available to the silica nanoparticles and hence their φ, thanks to the T-induced change in mesogels' volume. Using optical microscopy, we first show that the mesogels retain their ability to change size with T when suspended in Ludox suspensions, similarly as in water. We then show that their size is independent of the sample thermal history such that a well-defined, reversible relationship between T and φ may be established. Finally, we use space-resolved dynamic light scattering to demonstrate that, upon varying T, our system exhibits a broad range of dynamical behaviors across the glass transition and beyond, comparable with those exhibited by a series of distinct silica nanoparticle suspensions of various φ.

Probing shear-induced rearrangements in Fourier space. I. Dynamic light scattering

Understanding the microscopic origin of the rheological behavior of soft matter is a long-lasting endeavour. While early efforts concentrated mainly on the relationship between rheology and structure, current research focuses on the role of microscopic dynamics. We present in two companion papers a thorough discussion of how Fourier space-based methods may be coupled to rheology to shed light on the relationship between the microscopic dynamics and the mechanical response of soft systems. In this first companion paper, we report a theoretical, numerical and experimental investigation of dynamic light scattering coupled to rheology. While in ideal solids and simple viscous fluids the displacement field under a shear deformation is purely affine, additional non-affine displacements arise in many situations of great interest, for example in elastically heterogeneous materials or due to plastic rearrangements. We show how affine and non-affine displacements can be separately resolved by dynamic light scattering, and discuss in detail the effect of several non-idealities in typical experiments.

Probing shear-induced rearrangements in Fourier space. II. Differential dynamic microscopy

We discuss in two companion papers how Fourier-space measurements may be coupled to rheological tests in order to elucidate the relationship between mechanical properties and microscopic dynamics in soft matter. In this second companion paper, we focus on Differential Dynamic Microscopy (DDM) under shear. We highlight the analogies and the differences with dynamic light scattering coupled to rheology, providing a theoretical approach and practical guidelines to separate the contributions to DDM arising from the affine and the non-affine part of the microscopic displacement field. We show that in DDM under shear the coherence of the illuminating source plays a key role, determining the effective sample thickness that is probed. Our theoretical analysis is validated by experiments on 2D samples and 3D gels.

A stress-controlled shear cell for small-angle light scattering and microscopy

We develop and test a stress-controlled, parallel plates shear cell that can be coupled to an optical microscope or a small angle light scattering setup, for simultaneous investigation of the rheological response and the microscopic structure of soft materials under an imposed shear stress. In order to minimize friction, the cell is based on an air bearing linear stage, the stress is applied through a contactless magnetic actuator, and the strain is measured through optical sensors. We discuss the contributions of inertia and of the small residual friction to the measured signal and demonstrate the performance of our device in both oscillating and step stress experiments on a variety of viscoelastic materials.

An efficient scheme for sampling fast dynamics at a low average data acquisition rate

We introduce a temporal scheme for data sampling, based on a variable delay between two successive data acquisitions. The scheme is designed so as to reduce the average data flow rate, while still retaining the information on the data evolution on fast time scales. The practical implementation of the scheme is discussed and demonstrated in light scattering and microscopy experiments that probe the dynamics of colloidal suspensions using CMOS or CCD cameras as detectors.

Bulk and interfacial stresses in suspensions of soft and hard colloids

We explore the influence of particle softness and internal structure on both the bulk and interfacial rheological properties of colloidal suspensions. We probe bulk stresses by conventional rheology, by measuring the flow curves, shear stress versus strain rate, for suspensions of soft, deformable microgel particles and suspensions of near hard-sphere-like silica particles. A similar behaviour is seen for both kinds of particles in suspensions at concentrations up to the random close packing volume fraction, in agreement with recent theoretical predictions for sub-micron colloids. Transient interfacial stresses are measured by analyzing the patterns formed by the interface between the suspensions and their solvent, due to a generalized Saffman-Taylor hydrodynamic instability. At odds with the bulk behaviour, we find that microgels and hard particle suspensions exhibit vastly different interfacial stress properties. We propose that this surprising behaviour results mainly from the difference in particle internal structure (polymeric network for microgels versus compact solid for the silica particles), rather than softness alone.

A microscopic view of the yielding transition in concentrated emulsions

We use a custom shear cell coupled to an optical microscope to investigate at the particle level the yielding transition in concentrated emulsions subjected to an oscillatory shear deformation. By performing experiments lasting thousands of cycles on samples at several volume fractions and for a variety of applied strain amplitudes, we obtain a comprehensive, microscopic picture of the yielding transition. We find that irreversible particle motion sharply increases beyond a volume-fraction dependent critical strain, which is found to be in close agreement with the strain beyond which the stress-strain relation probed in rheology experiments significantly departs from linearity. The shear-induced dynamics are very heterogenous: quiescent particles coexist with two distinct populations of mobile and 'supermobile' particles. Dynamic activity exhibits spatial and temporal correlations, with rearrangements events organized in bursts of motion affecting localized regions of the sample. Analogies with other sheared soft materials and with recent work on the transition to irreversibility in sheared complex fluids are briefly discussed.

Simultaneous measurement of the microscopic dynamics and the mesoscopic displacement field in soft systems by speckle imaging

The constituents of soft matter systems such as colloidal suspensions, emulsions, polymers, and biological tissues undergo microscopic random motion, due to thermal energy. They may also experience drift motion correlated over mesoscopic or macroscopic length scales, e.g. in response to an internal or applied stress or during flow. We present a new method for measuring simultaneously both the microscopic motion and the mesoscopic or macroscopic drift. The method is based on the analysis of spatio-temporal cross-correlation functions of speckle patterns taken in an imaging configuration. The method is tested on a translating Brownian suspension and a sheared colloidal glass.

Atomic-scale relaxation dynamics and aging in a metallic glass probed by x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy

We use x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy to investigate the structural relaxation process in a metallic glass on the atomic length scale. We report evidence for a dynamical crossover between the supercooled liquid phase and the metastable glassy state, suggesting different origins of the relaxation process across the transition. Furthermore, using different cooling rates, we observe a complex hierarchy of dynamic processes characterized by distinct aging regimes. Strong analogies with the aging dynamics of soft glassy materials, such as gels and concentrated colloidal suspensions, point at stress relaxation as a universal mechanism driving the relaxation dynamics of out-of-equilibrium systems.

Multiangle static and dynamic light scattering in the intermediate scattering angle range

We describe a light scattering apparatus based on a novel optical scheme covering the scattering angle range 0.5° ≤ θ ≤ 25°, an intermediate regime at the frontier between wide angle and small angle setups that is difficult to access by existing instruments. Our apparatus uses standard, readily available optomechanical components. Thanks to the use of a charge-coupled device detector, both static and dynamic light scattering can be performed simultaneously at several scattering angles. We demonstrate the capabilities of our apparatus by measuring the scattering profile of a variety of samples and the Brownian dynamics of a dilute colloidal suspension.

Equilibrium concentration profiles and sedimentation kinetics of colloidal gels under gravitational stress

We study the sedimentation of colloidal gels by using a combination of light scattering, polarimetry and video imaging. The asymptotic concentration profiles (z,t → ∞) exhibit remarkable scaling properties: profiles for gels prepared at different initial volume fractions and particle interactions can be superimposed onto a single master curve by using suitable reduced variables. We show theoretically that this behavior stems from a power law dependence of the compressive elastic modulus versus , which we directly test experimentally. The sedimentation kinetics comprises an initial latency stage, followed by a rapid collapse where the gel height h decreases at constant velocity and a final compaction stage characterized by a stretched exponential relaxation of h toward a plateau. Analogies and differences with previous works are briefly discussed.

Highly nonlinear dynamics in a slowly sedimenting colloidal gel

We use a combination of original light scattering techniques and particles with unique optical properties to investigate the behavior of suspensions of attractive colloids under gravitational stress, following over time the concentration profile, the velocity profile, and the microscopic dynamics. During the compression regime, the sedimentation velocity grows nearly linearly with height, implying that the gel settling may be fully described by a (time-dependent) strain rate. We find that the microscopic dynamics exhibit remarkable scaling properties when time is normalized by the strain rate, showing that the gel microscopic restructuring is dominated by its macroscopic deformation.

Slow dynamics and internal stress relaxation in bundled cytoskeletal networks

Crosslinked and bundled actin filaments form networks that are essential for the mechanical properties of living cells. Reconstituted actin networks have been extensively studied not only as a model system for the cytoskeleton, but also to understand the interplay between microscopic structure and macroscopic viscoelastic properties of network-forming soft materials. These constitute a broad class of materials with countless applications in science and industry. So far, it has been widely assumed that reconstituted actin networks represent equilibrium structures. Here, we show that fully polymerized actin/fascin bundle networks exhibit surprising age-dependent changes in their viscoelastic properties and spontaneous dynamics, a feature strongly reminiscent of out-of-equilibrium, or glassy, soft materials. Using a combination of rheology, confocal microscopy and space-resolved dynamic light scattering, we demonstrate that actin networks build up stress during their formation and then slowly relax towards equilibrium owing to the unbinding dynamics of the crosslinking molecules.

Probing the equilibrium dynamics of colloidal hard spheres above the mode-coupling glass transition

We use dynamic light scattering and computer simulations to study equilibrium dynamics and dynamic heterogeneity in concentrated suspensions of colloidal hard spheres. Our study covers an unprecedented density range and spans seven decades in structural relaxation time, tau(alpha0, including equilibrium measurements above phi(c), the location of the glass transition deduced from fitting our data to mode-coupling theory. Instead of falling out of equilibrium, the system remains ergodic above phi(c) and enters a new dynamical regime where tau(alpha) increases with a functional form that was not anticipated by previous experiments, while the amplitude of dynamic heterogeneity grows slower than a power law with tau(alpha), as found in molecular glass formers close to the glass transition.

Resolving long-range spatial correlations in jammed colloidal systems using photon correlation imaging

We introduce a new dynamic light scattering method, termed photon correlation imaging, which enables us to resolve the dynamics of soft matter in space and time. We demonstrate photon correlation imaging by investigating the slow dynamics of a quasi-two-dimensional coarsening foam made of highly packed, deformable bubbles and a rigid gel network formed by dilute, attractive colloidal particles. We find the dynamics of both systems to be determined by intermittent rearrangement events. For the foam, the rearrangements extend over a few bubbles, but a small dynamical correlation is observed up to macroscopic length scales. For the gel, dynamical correlations extend up to the system size. These results indicate that dynamical correlations can be extremely long-ranged in jammed systems and point to the key role of mechanical properties in determining their nature.

Dynamics of a colloid-stabilized cream

We use x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy to investigate the dynamics of a high-volume-fraction emulsion creaming under gravity. The dodecane-in-water emulsion has interfaces stabilized solely by colloidal particles (silica). The samples were observed soon after mixing: as the emulsion becomes compact we discern two regimes of aging with a crossover between them. The young emulsion has faster dynamics associated with creaming in a crowded environment accompanied by local rearrangements. The dynamics slow down for the older emulsion, although our studies show that motion is associated with large intermittent events. The relaxation rate, as seen from the intensity autocorrelation function, depends linearly on the wave vector at all times; however, the exponent associated with the line shape changes from 1.5 for young samples to less than 1 as the emulsion ages. The combination of ballisticlike dynamics, an exponent that drops below 1, and large intermittent fluctuations has not been reported before to our knowledge.

Spinodal decomposition in a model colloid-polymer mixture in microgravity

We study phase separation in a deeply quenched colloid-polymer mixture in microgravity on the International Space Station using small-angle light scattering and direct imaging. We observe a clear crossover from early-stage spinodal decomposition to late-stage, interfacial-tension-driven coarsening. Data acquired over 5 orders of magnitude in time show more than 3 orders of magnitude increase in domain size, following nearly the same evolution as that in binary liquid mixtures. The late-stage growth approaches the expected linear growth rate quite slowly.

Adaptive Speckle Imaging Interferometry: a new technique for the analysis of microstructure dynamics, drying processes and coating formation

We describe an extension of multi-speckle diffusing wave spectroscopy adapted to follow the non-stationary microscopic dynamics in drying films and coatings in a very reactive way and with a high dynamic range. We call this technique "Adaptive Speckle Imaging Interferometry". We introduce an efficient tool, the inter-image distance, to evaluate the speckle dynamics, and the concept of "speckle rate" (SR, in Hz) to quantify this dynamics. The adaptive algorithm plots a simple kinetics, the time evolution of the SR, providing a non-invasive characterization of drying phenomena. A new commercial instrument, called HORUS(R), based on ASII and specialized in the analysis of film formation and drying processes is presented.

Investigation of q-dependent dynamical heterogeneity in a colloidal gel by x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy

We use time-resolved x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy to investigate the slow dynamics of colloidal gels made of moderately attractive carbon black particles. We show that the slow dynamics is temporally heterogeneous and quantify its fluctuations by measuring the variance chi of the instantaneous intensity correlation function. The amplitude of dynamical fluctuations has a nonmonotonic dependence on scattering vector q, in stark contrast with recent experiments on strongly attractive colloidal gels [Duri and Cipelletti, Europhys. Lett. 76, 972 (2006)]. We propose a simple scaling argument for the q-dependence of fluctuations in glassy systems that rationalizes these findings.

Direct Experimental Evidence of a Growing Length Scale Accompanying the Glass Transition

Understanding glass formation is a challenge, because the existence of a true glass state, distinct from liquid and solid, remains elusive: Glasses are liquids that have become too viscous to flow. An old idea, as yet unproven experimentally, is that the dynamics becomes sluggish as the glass transition approaches, because increasingly larger regions of the material have to move simultaneously to allow flow. We introduce new multipoint dynamical susceptibilities to estimate quantitatively the size of these regions and provide direct experimental evidence that the glass formation of molecular liquids and colloidal suspensions is accompanied by growing dynamic correlation length scales.

Time-dependent strength of colloidal gels

Colloidal silica gels are shown to stiffen with time, as demonstrated by both dynamic light scattering and bulk rheological measurements. Their elastic moduli increase as a power law with time, independent of particle volume fraction; however, static light scattering indicates that there are no large-scale structural changes. We propose that increases in local elasticity arising from bonding between neighboring colloidal particles can account for the strengthening of the network, while preserving network structure.

Heterogeneous dynamics of coarsening systems

We show by means of experiments, theory, and simulations that the slow dynamics of coarsening systems displays dynamic heterogeneity similar to that observed in glass-forming systems. We measure dynamic heterogeneity via novel multipoint functions which quantify the emergence of dynamic, as opposed to static, correlations of fluctuations. Experiments are performed on a coarsening foam using time-resolved correlation, a recently introduced light scattering method. Theoretically we study the Ising model, and present exact results in one dimension, and numerical results in two dimensions. For all systems the same dynamic scaling of fluctuations with domain size is observed.

Limits to gelation in colloidal aggregation

We show that the dynamics of large fractal colloid aggregates are well described by a combination of translational and rotational diffusion and internal elastic fluctuations, allowing both the aggregate size and internal elasticity to be determined by dynamic light scattering. The comparison of results obtained in microgravity and on Earth demonstrates that cluster growth is limited by gravity-induced restructuring. In the absence of gravity, thermal fluctuations ultimately inhibit fractal growth and set the fundamental limitation to the lowest volume fraction which will gel.

Rideal lecture. Universal features of the fluid to solid transition for attractive colloidal particles

Attractive colloidal particles can exhibit a fluid to solid phase transition if the magnitude of the attractive interaction is sufficiently large, if the volume fraction is sufficiently high, and if the applied stress is sufficiently small. The nature of this fluid to solid transition is similar for many different colloid systems, and for many different forms of interaction. The jamming phase transition captures the common features of these fluid to solid translations, by unifying the behavior as a function of the particle volume fraction, the energy of interparticle attractions, and the applied stress. This paper describes the applicability of the jamming state diagram, and highlights those regions where the fluid to solid transition is still poorly understood. It also presents new data for gelation of colloidal particles with an attractive depletion interaction, providing more insight into the origin of the fluid to solid transition.

Ultraslow dynamics and stress relaxation in the aging of a soft glassy system

We use linear rheology and multispeckle dynamic light scattering (MDLS) to investigate the aging of a gel composed of multilamellar vesicles. Light scattering data indicate rearrangement of the gel through an unusual ultraslow ballistic motion. A dramatic slowdown of the dynamics with sample age t(w) is observed for both rheology and MDLS, the characteristic relaxation time scaling as t(mu)w. We find the same aging exponent mu = 0.78 for both techniques, suggesting that they probe similar physical processes, that is the relaxation of applied or internal stresses for rheology or MDLS, respectively. A simple phenomenological model is developed to account for the observed dynamics.

Jamming phase diagram for attractive particles

A wide variety of systems, including granular media, colloidal suspensions and molecular systems, exhibit non-equilibrium transitions from a fluid-like to a solid-like state, characterized solely by the sudden arrest of their dynamics. Crowding or jamming of the constituent particles traps them kinetically, precluding further exploration of the phase space. The disordered fluid-like structure remains essentially unchanged at the transition. The jammed solid can be refluidized by thermalization, through temperature or vibration, or by an applied stress. The generality of the jamming transition led to the proposal of a unifying description, based on a jamming phase diagram. It was further postulated that attractive interactions might have the same effect in jamming the system as a confining pressure, and thus could be incorporated into the generalized description. Here we study experimentally the fluid-to-solid transition of weakly attractive colloidal particles, which undergo markedly similar gelation behaviour with increasing concentration and decreasing thermalization or stress. Our results support the concept of a jamming phase diagram for attractive colloidal particles, providing a unifying link between the glass transition, gelation and aggregation.

Universal aging features in the restructuring of fractal colloidal gels

We use multispeckle dynamic light scattering to measure the dynamic structure factor, f(q,tau), of gels formed by aggregation of colloids. Although the gel is an elastic solid, f(q,tau) nearly completely decays on long time scales, with an unusual form, f(q, tau) approximately exp{-(tau/tau(f))(mu)}, with mu approximately 1.5 and with tau(f) proportional variant q(-1). A model for restructuring of the gel with aging correctly accounts for this behavior. Aging leads to a dramatic increase in tau(f); however, all data can be scaled on a single master curve, with tau(f) asymptotically growing linearly with age. This behavior is strikingly similar to that predicted for aging in disordered glassy systems, offering convincing proof of the universality of these concepts.
