Ultrasonic enhanced liquid-liquid interfacial reaction for improving the synthesis of Iron-doped carbon dots (Fe-CDs) for achieving superior photocatalytic performance

The precise and controllable preparation of carbon nanomaterials under mild conditions poses a great challenge, especially for metal-catalysed multiphase preparation. This work proposes an efficient method that utilizing high-density ultrasound to enhance the liquid-liquid interfacial reaction system. Iron-doped carbon dots (Fe-CDs) are successfully synthesized in such a normal temperature and atmospheric-pressure reaction condition. It is shown that transient cavitation provides a high-temperature and high-pressure microenvironment for the preparation of Fe-CDs. Moreover, the size of the reactant droplets is reduced from 200.0 ± 17.3 μm to 8.1 ± 2.9 μm owing to the acoustic flow and cavitation effects, which increases the specific surface area of the two reacting phases and improves the mass transfer coefficient by more than 252.0 %. As a result, the yield increases by more than an order of magnitude (from 0.7 ± 0.1 % to 11.9 ± 0.2 %) and the Fe doping rate reaches 20.9 %. The photocatalytic oxidation conversion of 1,4-Dihydropyridine (1,4-DHP) using the obtained Fe-CDs is as high as 98.2 %. This research gives a new approach for the efficient and safe production of Fe-CDs, which is promising for industrial applications.

ELOVL6 promotes the progression of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma via activating WNT/β-catenin pathway

This study was to explore the role of ELOVL6 in the development of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Considering its previously identified oncogenic role in hepatocellular carcinoma. ELOVL6 gene expression, clinicopathological analysis, enrichment analysis, and immune infiltration analysis were based on the data from Gene Expression Omnibus and The Cancer Genome Atlas, with additional bioinformatics analyses performed. Human HNSCC tissue microarray and cell lines were used. The expression of ELOVL6 in HNSCC was detected by quantitative polymerase chain reaction, immunohistochemistry assay, and western blot analysis. The proliferation ability of HNSCC cells, invasion, and apoptosis were evaluated using cell counting kit-8 method, Transwell assay, and flow cytometry, respectively. Based on the data derived from the cancer databases and our HNSCC cell and tissue studies, we found that ELOVL6 was overexpressed in HNSCC. Moreover, ELOVL6 expression level had a positive correlation with clinicopathology of HNSCC. Gene set enrichment analysis showed that ELOVL6 affected the occurrence of HNSCC through WNT signaling pathway. Functional experiments demonstrated that ELOVL6 knockdown inhibited the proliferation and invasion of HNSCC cells while promoting apoptosis. Additionally, compound 3f, an agonist of WNT/β-catenin signaling pathway, enhances the effect of ELOVL6 on the progression of HNSCC cells. ELOVL6 is upregulated in HNSCC and promotes the development of HNSCC cells by inducing WNT/β-catenin signaling pathway. ELOVL6 stands a potential target for the treatment of HNSCC and a prognosis indicator of human HNSCC.

Deciphering the Nitrogen Fixation Gene Cluster in Vibrio natriegens: A Study on Optimized Expression and Application of Nitrogenase

Microbial nitrogen fixation presents a viable alternative to chemical fertilizers, yet the limited colonization and specificity of naturally occurring nitrogen-fixing microorganisms present significant challenges to their widespread application. In this study, we identified a nitrogen fixation gene cluster (VNnif) in Vibrio natriegens (VN) and tested its nitrogenase activity through the acetylene reduction assay. We investigated the potential utilization of nitrogenase by incorporating the nitrogenase gene cluster from VN into plant growth-promoting rhizosphere bacteria Pseudomonas protegens CHA0 and enhancing its activity to 48.16 nmol C2H2/mg/h through promoter replacement and cluster rearrangement. The engineered strain CHA0-PVNnif was found to positively impact the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana col-0 and Triticum aestivum L. (wheat). This study expanded the role of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and provided a research foundation for enhancing nitrogenase activity.

Determination of Spin-Parity Quantum Numbers of X(2370) as 0^{-+} from J/ψ→γK_{S}^{0}K_{S}^{0}η^{'}

Based on (10087±44)×10^{6}  J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, a partial wave analysis of the decay J/ψ→γK_{S}^{0}K_{S}^{0}η^{'} is performed. The mass and width of the X(2370) are measured to be 2395±11(stat)_{-94}^{+26}(syst)  MeV/c^{2} and 188_{-17}^{+18}(stat)_{-33}^{+124}(syst)  MeV, respectively. The corresponding product branching fraction is B[J/ψ→γX(2370)]×B[X(2370)→f_{0}(980)η^{'}]×B[f_{0}(980)→K_{S}^{0}K_{S}^{0}]=(1.31±0.22(stat)_{-0.84}^{+2.85}(syst))×10^{-5}. The statistical significance of the X(2370) is greater than 11.7σ and the spin parity is determined to be 0^{-+} for the first time. The measured mass and spin parity of the X(2370) are consistent with the predictions of the lightest pseudoscalar glueball.

SAFB restricts contact domain boundaries associated with L1 chimeric transcription

Long interspersed element-1 (LINE-1 or L1) comprises 17% of the human genome, continuously generates genetic variations, and causes disease in certain cases. However, the regulation and function of L1 remain poorly understood. Here, we uncover that L1 can enrich RNA polymerase IIs (RNA Pol IIs), express L1 chimeric transcripts, and create contact domain boundaries in human cells. This impact of L1 is restricted by a nuclear matrix protein scaffold attachment factor B (SAFB) that recognizes transcriptionally active L1s by binding L1 transcripts to inhibit RNA Pol II enrichment. Acute inhibition of RNA Pol II transcription abolishes the domain boundaries associated with L1 chimeric transcripts, indicating a transcription-dependent mechanism. Deleting L1 impairs domain boundary formation, and L1 insertions during evolution have introduced species-specific domain boundaries. Our data show that L1 can create RNA Pol II-enriched regions that alter genome organization and that SAFB regulates L1 and RNA Pol II activity to preserve gene regulation.

The Influence of Reinforced Fibers and Opacifiers on the Effective Thermal Conductivity of Silica Aerogels

Fiber-particle-reinforced silica aerogels are widely applied in thermal insulation. Knowing their effective thermal conductivity (ETC) and radiative characteristics under high temperatures is necessary to improve their performance. This article first analyzes the radiation characteristics of silica aerogels doped with opacifier particles and reinforced fibers, and then a universal model is established to predict the ETC. Furthermore, the impacts of different parameters of opacifier particles and reinforced fibers on the thermal insulation performance of silica aerogels are investigated. The results indicate that SiC exhibits comparatively strong absorption characteristics, making it a good alternative for opacifiers to improve thermal insulation performance under high temperatures. For the given type and volume fraction of opacifier particles, there exists an optimal diameter and volume fraction to achieve the best insulation performance of silica aerogel under a certain temperature. Considering that SiO2 fibers exhibit a limited extinction capability and higher conductive thermal conductivity under high temperatures, for fiber-particle-reinforced silica aerogels, it is beneficial for their insulation performance to reduce the fiber volume fraction when the required mechanical properties are satisfied.

Observation of Structures in the Processes e^{+}e^{-}→ωχ_{c1} and ωχ_{c2}

We present measurements of the Born cross sections for the processes e^{+}e^{-}→ωχ_{c1} and ωχ_{c2} at center-of-mass energies sqrt[s] from 4.308 to 4.951 GeV. The measurements are performed with data samples corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 11.0  fb^{-1} collected with the BESIII detector operating at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider storage ring. Assuming the e^{+}e^{-}→ωχ_{c2} signals come from a single resonance, the mass and width are determined to be M=(4413.6±9.0±0.8)  MeV/c^{2} and Γ=(110.5±15.0±2.9)  MeV, respectively, which is consistent with the parameters of the well-established resonance ψ(4415). In addition, we also use one single resonance to describe the e^{+}e^{-}→ωχ_{c1} line shape and determine the mass and width to be M=(4544.2±18.7±1.7)  MeV/c^{2} and Γ=(116.1±33.5±1.7)  MeV, respectively. The structure of this line shape, observed for the first time, requires further understanding.

Coupled-Channel Analysis of the χ_{c1}(3872) Line Shape with BESIII Data

We perform a study of the χ_{c1}(3872) line shape using the data samples of e^{+}e^{-}→γχ_{c1}(3872), χ_{c1}(3872)→D^{0}D[over ¯]^{0}π^{0}, and π^{+}π^{-}J/ψ collected with the BESIII detector. The effects of the coupled channels and the off-shell D^{*0} are included in the parametrization of the line shape. The line shape mass parameter is obtained to be M_{X}=(3871.63±0.13_{-0.05}^{+0.06})  MeV. Two poles are found on the first and second Riemann sheets corresponding to the D^{*0}D[over ¯]^{0} branch cut. The pole location on the first sheet is much closer to the D^{*0}D[over ¯]^{0} threshold than the other, and is determined to be 7.04±0.15_{-0.08}^{+0.07}  MeV above the D^{0}D[over ¯]^{0}π^{0} threshold with an imaginary part -0.19±0.08_{-0.19}^{+0.14}  MeV.

Observation of the Anomalous Shape of X(1840) in J/ψ→γ3(π^{+}π^{-}) Indicating a Second Resonance Near pp[over ¯] Threshold

Using a sample of (10087±44)×10^{6}  J/ψ events, which is about 45 times larger than that was previously analyzed, a further investigation on the J/ψ→γ3(π^{+}π^{-}) decay is performed. A significant distortion at 1.84  GeV/c^{2} in the line shape of the 3(π^{+}π^{-}) invariant mass spectrum is observed for the first time, which could be resolved by two overlapping resonant structures, X(1840) and X(1880). The new state X(1880) is observed with a statistical significance larger than 10σ. The mass and width of X(1880) are determined to be 1882.1±1.7±0.7  MeV/c^{2} and 30.7±5.5±2.4  MeV, respectively, which indicates the existence of a pp[over ¯] bound state.

Study of the f_{0}(980) and f_{0}(500) Scalar Mesons through the Decay D_{s}^{+}→π^{+}π^{-}e^{+}ν_{e}

Using e^{+}e^{-} collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.33  fb^{-1} recorded by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226 GeV, we present an analysis of the decay D_{s}^{+}→π^{+}π^{-}e^{+}ν_{e}, where the D_{s}^{+} is produced via the process e^{+}e^{-}→D_{s}^{*±}D_{s}^{∓}. We observe the f_{0}(980) in the π^{+}π^{-} system and the branching fraction of the decay D_{s}^{+}→f_{0}(980)e^{+}ν_{e} with f_{0}(980)→π^{+}π^{-} measured to be (1.72±0.13_{stat}±0.10_{syst})×10^{-3}, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The dynamics of the D_{s}^{+}→f_{0}(980)e^{+}ν_{e} decay are studied with the simple pole parametrization of the hadronic form factor and the Flatté formula describing the f_{0}(980) in the differential decay rate, and the product of the form factor f_{+}^{f_{0}}(0) and the c→s Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |V_{cs}| is determined for the first time to be f_{+}^{f_{0}}(0)|V_{cs}|=0.504±0.017_{stat}±0.035_{syst}. Furthermore, the decay D_{s}^{+}→f_{0}(500)e^{+}ν_{e} is searched for the first time but no signal is found. The upper limit on the branching fraction of D_{s}^{+}→f_{0}(500)e^{+}ν_{e}, f_{0}(500)→π^{+}π^{-} decay is set to be 3.3×10^{-4} at 90% confidence level.

Multivalent Rhamnose-Modified EGFR-Targeting Nanobody Gains Enhanced Innate Fc Effector Immunity and Overcomes Cetuximab Resistance via Recruitment of Endogenous Antibodies

Cetuximab resistance is a significant challenge in cancer treatment, requiring the development of novel therapeutic strategies. In this study, a series of multivalent rhamnose (Rha)-modified nanobody conjugates are synthesized and their antitumor activities and their potential to overcome cetuximab resistance are investigated. Structure-activity relationship studies reveal that the multivalent conjugate D5, bearing sixteen Rha haptens, elicits the most potent innate fragment crystallizable (Fc) effector immunity in vitro and exhibits an excellent in vivo pharmacokinetics by recruiting endogenous antibodies. Notably, it is found that the optimal conjugate D5 represents a novel entity capable of reversing cetuximab-resistance induced by serine protease (PRSS). Moreover, in a xenograft mouse model, conjugate D5 exhibits significantly improved antitumor efficacy compared to unmodified nanobodies and cetuximab. The findings suggest that Rha-Nanobody (Nb) conjugates hold promise as a novel therapeutic strategy for the treatment of cetuximab-resistant tumors by enhancing the innate Fc effector immunity and enhancing the recruitment of endogenous antibodies to promote cancer cell clearance by innate immune cells.

Observation of D^{+}→K_{S}^{0}a_{0}(980)^{+} in the Amplitude Analysis of D^{+}→K_{S}^{0}π^{+}η

We perform for the first time an amplitude analysis of the decay D^{+}→K_{S}^{0}π^{+}η and report the observation of the decay D^{+}→K_{S}^{0}a_{0}(980)^{+} using 2.93  fb^{-1} of e^{+}e^{-} collision data taken at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector. As the only W-annihilation-free decay among D to a_{0}(980) pseudoscalar, D^{+}→K_{S}^{0}a_{0}(980)^{+} is the ideal decay in extracting the contributions of the W-emission amplitudes involving a_{0}(980) and to study the final-state interactions. The absolute branching fraction of D^{+}→K_{S}^{0}π^{+}η is measured to be (1.27±0.04_{stat}±0.03_{syst})%. The branching fractions of intermediate processes D^{+}→K_{S}^{0}a_{0}(980)^{+} with a_{0}(980)^{+}→π^{+}η and D^{+}→π^{+}K[over ¯]_{0}^{*}(1430)^{0} with K[over ¯]_{0}^{*}(1430)^{0}→K_{S}^{0}η are measured to be (1.33±0.05_{stat}±0.04_{syst})% and (0.14±0.03_{stat}±0.01_{syst})%, respectively.

Observation of Significant Flavor-SU(3) Breaking in the Kaon Wave Function at 12<Q^{2}<25 GeV^{2} and Discovery of the Charmless Decay ψ(3770)→K_{S}^{0}K_{L}^{0}

Case Report: Two cases of advanced primary cardiac angiosarcoma treated with anlotinib and a retrospective analysis of the literature

Primary cardiac angiosarcoma is a rare malignant soft-tissue sarcoma derived from vascular endothelial cells or lymphatic endothelial cells, with a high malignancy, poor prognosis, and a lack of effective medical therapy. This article reports on two patients with primary cardiac angiosarcoma who received first-line treatment with multi-targeted anti-angiogenic agent, anlotinib monotherapy. The treatment rapidly controlled pleural and pericardial effusion, significantly reduced the tumor, improved symptoms, and showed satisfactory recent efficacy. This indicates that anlotinib offers a new first-line treatment option for advanced primary cardiac angiosarcoma.

Effects of Inorganic Salts on the Phase Separation of Partially Miscible Solutes

Partially miscible solutions with a lower critical solution temperature have promising applications in the field of physical chemistry. To better guide the utilization of these solutions in practice, we conduct an in-depth study about the phase separation behavior of the solution added with inorganic salts. The addition of the inorganic salts into the solution is found to consequently reduce the phase separation temperature. The variation of concentrations of inorganic salts does not notably affect the mass fraction of the separation. Moreover, the addition of inorganic salts in the solutions at lower mass fractions improves the separation mass fraction, while the addition of inorganic salts decreases the separation mass fraction at the mass fractions above 30%. It sheds light on selecting the proper mass fractions and inorganic salt concentrations. Furthermore, we explore the phase separation behavior of mixed solutions under different inorganic salt additions by means of a high-speed camera. The phase separation behavior under different inorganic salt systems shows a similar trend. However, calcium ions and Fe3+ ions in the solutions can greatly decrease the rate of droplet coalescence and result in an increase in phase separation. For better regulating the solutions with a lower critical solution temperature through inorganic salts, sodium chloride or potassium chloride is recommended with an appropriate concentration.

Investigation of the ΔI=1/2 Rule and Test of CP Symmetry through the Measurement of Decay Asymmetry Parameters in Ξ^{-} Decays

Using (10087±44)×10^{6}  J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, numerous Ξ^{-} and Λ decay asymmetry parameters are simultaneously determined from the process J/ψ→Ξ^{-}Ξ[over ¯]^{+}→Λ(pπ^{-})π^{-}Λ[over ¯](n[over ¯]π^{0})π^{+} and its charge-conjugate channel. The precisions of α_{Λ0} for Λ→nπ^{0} and α[over ¯]_{Λ0} for Λ[over ¯]→n[over ¯]π^{0} compared to world averages are improved by factors of 4 and 1.7, respectively. The ratio of decay asymmetry parameters of Λ→nπ^{0} to that of Λ→pπ^{-}, ⟨α_{Λ0}⟩/⟨α_{Λ-}⟩, is determined to be 0.873±0.012_{-0.010}^{+0.011}, where the first and the second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The ratio is smaller than unity more than 5σ, which signifies the existence of the ΔI=3/2 transition in Λ for the first time. Besides, we test for CP symmetry in Ξ^{-}→Λπ^{-} and in Λ→nπ^{0} with the best precision to date.

Observation of D_{s}^{+}→η^{'}μ^{+}ν_{μ}, Precision Test of Lepton Flavor Universality with D_{s}^{+}→η^{(')}l^{+}ν_{l}, and First Measurements of D_{s}^{+}→η^{(')}μ^{+}ν_{μ} Decay Dynamics

By analyzing 7.33  fb^{-1} of e^{+}e^{-} annihilation data collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector, we report the observation of the semileptonic decay D_{s}^{+}→η^{'}μ^{+}ν_{μ}, with a statistical significance larger than 10σ, and the measurements of the D_{s}^{+}→ημ^{+}ν_{μ} and D_{s}^{+}→η^{'}μ^{+}ν_{μ} decay dynamics for the first time. The branching fractions of D_{s}^{+}→ημ^{+}ν_{μ} and D_{s}^{+}→η^{'}μ^{+}ν_{μ} are determined to be (2.235±0.051_{stat}±0.052_{syst})% and (0.801±0.055_{stat}±0.028_{syst})%, respectively, with precision improved by factors of 6.0 and 6.6 compared to the previous best measurements. Combined with the results for the decays D_{s}^{+}→ηe^{+}ν_{e} and D_{s}^{+}→η^{'}e^{+}ν_{e}, the ratios of the decay widths are examined both inclusively and in several ℓ^{+}ν_{ℓ} four-momentum transfer ranges. No evidence for lepton flavor universality violation is found within the current statistics. The products of the hadronic form factors f_{+,0}^{η^{(')}}(0) and the c→s Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |V_{cs}| are determined. The results based on the two-parameter series expansion are f_{+,0}^{η}(0)|V_{cs}|=0.452±0.010_{stat}±0.007_{syst} and f_{+,0}^{η^{'}}(0)|V_{cs}|=0.504±0.037_{stat}±0.012_{syst}, which help to constrain present models on f_{+,0}^{η^{(')}}(0). The forward-backward asymmetries are determined to be ⟨A_{FB}^{η}⟩=-0.059±0.031_{stat}±0.005_{syst} and ⟨A_{FB}^{η^{'}}⟩=-0.064±0.079_{stat}±0.006_{syst} for the first time, which are consistent with the theoretical calculation.

Sustainable utilization of fruit and vegetable waste bioresources for bioplastics production

Nowadays, rapidly increasing production, use and disposable of plastic products has become one of the utmost environmental issues. Our current circumstances in which the food supply chain is demonstrated as containing plastic particles and other plastic-based impurities, represents a significant health risk to humans, animals, and environmental alike. According to this point of view, biodegradable plastic material aims to produce a more sustainable and greener world with a lower ecological impact. Bioplastics are being investigated as an environmentally friendly candidate to address this problem and hence global bioplastic production has seen significant growth and expansion in recent years. This article focuses on a few critical issues that must be addressed for bioplastic production to become commercially viable. Although the reduction of fruit and vegetable waste biomass has an apparent value in terms of environmental benefits and sustainability, commercial success at industrial scale has remained flat. This is due to various factors, including biomass feedstocks, pretreatment technologies, enzymatic hydrolysis, and scale-up issues in the industry, all of which contribute to high capital and operating costs. This review paper summarizes the global overview of bioplastics derived from fruit and vegetable waste biomass. Soil Water Movement and Groundwater Recharge Under Different Land Uses in a Flood-Irrigated Area

The water shortage in agriculture area in China requires to reduce the consumption of excessive water in flood irrigation. Therefore, the dynamics of soil water regime is needed to investigate and water-saving irrigation is necessary to alleviate water shortage. This study investigated the impact of flood irrigation on soil water movement and recharge to groundwater in the Yellow River irrigation area of Yinchuan Plain, China. Combining comprehensive field observation, stable isotopic techniques and water balance simulation, we described the soil water mechanism in vadose zone covered with bare soil in 2019 and planted with maize in 2020. The soil layers affected by precipitation infiltration and evaporation were mainly 0-50 cm, while the soil influenced by irrigation was the entire profile in the mode of piston flow. The maize root took up the soil water up to the depth of 100 cm during the tasseling period. The infiltration and capillary rise in 2020 were similar with those in 2019. However, the total deep percolation was 156.5 mm in 2020 which was about 50% of that in 2019 because of the maize root water uptake. The leakage of ditch water was the major recharge resource of groundwater for the fast water table rise. Precise irrigation is required to minimize deep percolation and leakage of ditch water and reduce excessive unproductive evapotranspiration. Therefore, understanding the soil water movement and groundwater recharge is critical for agricultural water management to improve irrigation efficiency and water use efficiency in arid regions.

Determination of the Σ^{+} Timelike Electromagnetic Form Factors

Based on data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the process e^{+}e^{-}→Σ^{+}Σ[over ¯]^{-} is studied at center-of-mass energies sqrt[s]=2.3960, 2.6454, and 2.9000 GeV. Using a fully differential angular description of the final state particles, both the relative magnitude and phase information of the Σ^{+} electromagnetic form factors in the timelike region are extracted. The relative phase between the electric and magnetic form factors is determined to be sinΔΦ=-0.67±0.29(stat)±0.18(syst) at sqrt[s]=2.3960  GeV, ΔΦ=55°±19°(stat)±14°(syst) at sqrt[s]=2.6454  GeV, and 78°±22°(stat)±9°(syst) at sqrt[s]=2.9000  GeV. For the first time, the phase of the hyperon electromagnetic form factors is explored in a wide range of four-momentum transfer. The evolution of the phase along with four-momentum transfer is an important input for understanding its asymptotic behavior and the dynamics of baryons.

Prognostic value of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging feature tracking technology in patients with light chain amyloidosis

AIM

To undertake a meta-analysis of the prognostic value of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging feature tracking (CMR-FT) in patients with light-chain cardiac amyloidosis (LCA).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library. All analyses were conducted using RevMan 5.3 software.

RESULTS

Eight studies were included with 663 patients. For the left ventricle, the results showed that CMR-FT was statistically significant in predicting death, with less impaired global circumferential (GCS), radial (GRS) and longitudinal (GLS) strain in survivors of LCA (odds ratio [OR] 1.17, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.09-1.25; 0.95, 0.93-0.96; 1.12, 1.05-1.20, all p<0.001). For ejection fraction (EF) and mass index, surviving patients had higher EFs and mass index (OR 0.96, 95% CI 0.96-0.97; 1.01, 1.01-1.02). For the right ventricle, the results showed that CMR-FT was statistically significant in predicting death, with less impaired GLS and GRS in survivors of LCA (OR 1.11, 95% CI 1.08-1.15; 0.93, 0.90-0.96, all p<0.001). Surviving patients had higher EFs (OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.96-0.98, p<0.001). Upon removing the studies one by one, there was no significant change in the results of the study. Both analyses showed no apparent publication deviation on funnel plots.

CONCLUSION

Parameters derived from CMR-FT technology are promising new predictors for LCA, and are easily available and reliable. Patients with poor myocardial deformability are at highest risk of death.

Reprogramming tumor-associated macrophages by a dually targeted milk exosome system as a potent monotherapy for cancer

Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) play a key role in inducing an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) and cancer immune escape. We previously revealed that PDL1 (a key immune checkpoint) was upregulated in TAMs and induced M2 polarization, highlighting PDL1 in TAMs as a promising cancer therapeutic target. In this study, we developed an engineered milk exosome (mExo) system decorated with M2pep (an M2 macrophage binding peptide) and 7D12 (an anti-EGFR nanobody) (7D12-mExo-M2pep-siPDL1) to specifically deliver siPDL1 into M2 TAMs. A series of in vitro and in vivo assays showed that the dually targeted engineered mExos efficiently delivered siPDL1 into M2 TAMs and repolarized them into M1 macrophages, restoring CD8+ T cell immune activity and remodeling TME. Importantly, systemically administered 7D12-mExo-M2pep-siPDL1 showed efficient single-agent antitumor activity, resulting in nearly 90% tumor growth inhibition in a mouse model of orthotopic epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) cancer. Collectively, our study indicates that PDL1 is a promising target for TAM-based cancer immunotherapy, and our engineered mExo-based nanomedicine represents a novel tool for specifically targeting M2 TAMs, distinguishing this novel therapeutic method from other TAM-targeting therapies and highlighting its promising clinical potential.

First Measurement of the Decay Asymmetry in the Pure W-Boson-Exchange Decay Λ_{c}^{+}→Ξ^{0}K^{+}

Based on 4.4  fb^{-1} of e^{+}e^{-} annihilation data collected at the center-of-mass energies between 4.60 and 4.70 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the pure W-boson-exchange decay Λ_{c}^{+}→Ξ^{0}K^{+} is studied with a full angular analysis. The corresponding decay asymmetry is measured for the first time to be α_{Ξ^{0}K^{+}}=0.01±0.16(stat)±0.03(syst). This result reflects the noninterference effect between the S- and P-wave amplitudes. The phase shift between S- and P-wave amplitudes has two solutions, which are δ_{p}-δ_{s}=-1.55±0.25(stat)±0.05(syst)  rad or 1.59±0.25(stat)±0.05(syst)  rad.

Association of serum vitamin C levels with Asthma in adults: results of NHANES 2003-2006 and mendelian randomization study

BACKGROUND

The protective effect of vitamin C as an antioxidant against asthma in adults remains controversial. This study used an observational study and Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the association between adult asthma and serum vitamin C levels.

METHODS

Using information from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2003-2006, we carried out an observational study. A multivariate logistic regression model was employed to examine the connection between adult asthma and serum vitamin C levels. We used the inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method of MR analysis as the primary method to analyze the causal effect of serum vitamin C levels on asthma in adults.

RESULTS

A total of 8,504 participants were included in the observational study, including 639 in the asthma group and 7,865 in the non-asthma group. Before sample weighting, serum vitamin C was associated with a reduced risk of asthma in adults (OR = 0.798, 95% CI: 0.673-0.945, P = 0.009). After sample weighting, serum vitamin C was not associated with adult asthma risk (OR = 0.829, 95% CI: 0.660 ~ 1.042, P = 0.104). MR analysis showed no causal relationship between serum vitamin C and adult asthma in either the UK Biobank (OR = 0.957, 95% CI: 0.871 ~ 1.053, P = 0.370) or FinnGen (OR = 0.973, 95% CI: 0.824 ~ 1.149, P = 0.750) cohorts.

CONCLUSION

Our study did not support a causal association between serum vitamin C levels and adult asthma risk. The relationship between serum vitamin C and adult asthma requires further research.

Higher Cognitive Reserve Is Beneficial for Cognitive Performance Via Various Locus Coeruleus Functional Pathways in the Pre-Dementia Stage of Alzheimer's Disease

BACKGROUND

Cognitive reserve (CR) shows protective effects on cognitive function in older adult and in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the brain mechanisms underlying the CR effect on the non-dementia AD spectrum (subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI)) are unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential moderate effect of CR on brain functional networks associated with cognitive performance.

METHODS

We selected 200 participants, including 48 cognitively normal (CN) and 56 SCD, and 96 patients with MCI from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). Seed-based locus coeruleus functional connectivity (LC FC) was conducted to detect early brain functional changes in the non-dementia AD spectrum. CR was assessed via years of education and intelligence (IQ). The ANDI composite executive function scores (ADNI-EF) and ADNI composite memory scores (ANDI-MEM) at baseline and 24-month follow-up were used to assess cognitive performance.

RESULTS

Compared to the CN group, the SCD group showed abnormal LC FC with the executive control network (dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, DLPFC), salience network, sensorimotor network, reward network, and hippocampus, while these alterations were inverted at the MCI stage. The LC-hippocampus FC was correlated with ADNI-MEM at baseline and follow-up, and these relationships were moderated by education. The LC-DLPFC FC was correlated with ADNI-EF at baseline, and this association was moderated by IQ.

CONCLUSION

Our results manifested that higher levels of CR would confer protective effects on SCD and MCI. Furthermore, IQ and education could moderate the relationship between LC FC and cognition through different pathways.

Atomistic Insights into the Effect of Functional Groups on the Adsorption of Water by Activated Carbon for Heat Energy Storage

Adsorption heat storage holds great promise for solar energy applications. The development of new adsorbent materials is currently the research focus in this area. The present work designs several activated carbon models with different functional groups, including -OH, -NH2, -COOH, and -SO3H, and explores the influence of functional groups' categories and numbers on the water adsorption capacity of the activated carbon using the GCMC method. The adsorption mechanism between functional groups and water molecules is analyzed using density functional theory. The results show that the functional groups could significantly improve the water adsorption capacity of activated carbon due to the hydrogen bond between functional groups and water molecules. In the scope of this paper, under low pressure, the activated carbon with -SO3H exhibits the best adsorption capacity, followed by the activated carbon with -COOH. Under low and medium pressure, increasing the number of -SO3H functional groups could increase the water adsorption capacity; however, when the pressure is high, increasing the functional group numbers might decrease the water adsorption capacity. As the temperature increases, the water adsorption capacity of activated carbons decreases, and the activated carbon with -SO3H is proven to have excellent application prospects in heat energy storage.

Discharge protocol in acute pancreatitis: an international survey and cohort analysis

There are several overlapping clinical practice guidelines in acute pancreatitis (AP), however, none of them contains suggestions on patient discharge. The Hungarian Pancreatic Study Group (HPSG) has recently developed a laboratory data and symptom-based discharge protocol which needs to be validated. (1) A survey was conducted involving all members of the International Association of Pancreatology (IAP) to understand the characteristics of international discharge protocols. (2) We investigated the safety and effectiveness of the HPSG-discharge protocol. According to our international survey, 87.5% (49/56) of the centres had no discharge protocol. Patients discharged based on protocols have a significantly shorter median length of hospitalization (LOH) (7 (5;10) days vs. 8 (5;12) days) p < 0.001), and a lower rate of readmission due to recurrent AP episodes (p = 0.005). There was no difference in median discharge CRP level among the international cohorts (p = 0.586). HPSG-protocol resulted in the shortest LOH (6 (5;9) days) and highest median CRP (35.40 (13.78; 68.40) mg/l). Safety was confirmed by the low rate of readmittance (n = 35; 5%). Discharge protocol is necessary in AP. The discharge protocol used in this study is the first clinically proven protocol. Developing and testifying further protocols are needed to better standardize patients' care.

Dopamine multilocus genetic profile influence on reward network in chronic insomnia disorder with depression

BACKGROUND

Chronic insomnia disorder (CID) is frequently comorbid with depression, and both conditions are believed to involve disruptions in the reward network. However, the potential effects of genetic polymorphisms in modulating this network remain largely unexplored.

METHODS

In this study, we recruited 50 CID patients with high (CID-HD) and low (CID-LD) depressive symptoms and assessed their reward networks using resting-state functional MRI. Additionally, we calculated the multilocus genetic profile score (MGPS) to examine the influence of depression and dopamine genetic variation on the nucleus accumbens functional connectivity (NAFC) network in CID patients.

RESULTS

Although the MGPS did not show a significant difference between the two CID groups, its influence on the NAFC network was observed in the salience network (SN) and visual network (VN) in CID patients. When comparing CID-HD patients to CID-LD patients, we found that CID-HD patients exhibited decreased NAFC in the internal reward network, default mode network, SN, and sensorimotor network, while showing increased NAFC in the executive control network (ECN) and VN. Furthermore, the influence of MGPS on the reward network was only significant in CID-HD patients, specifically in the internal reward network and ECN.

CONCLUSION

These findings suggest that genetic variations related to dopamine may modulate the reward network differently in CID patients with and without depressive symptoms. These results contribute to our understanding of the pathophysiology of polygenic effects underlying brain network abnormalities in CID patients with depression.

Rapid detection of telomerase expression of neuroblastoma in paraffin-embedded tissue: combination of in situ hybridisation and quantitative PCR

Neuroblastoma is a heterogeneous paediatric malignant tumour. Telomere maintenance mechanism (TMM) by telomerase activation or alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT) is a hallmark of high-risk neuroblastoma. However, the prior assays for telomerase, such as TERT expression by RNA sequencing or microarrays, may not be easy to perform in many histopathology laboratories in hospitals. The aims of this study are to assess the utility of ultrasensitive single-cell RNA in situ hybridisation (RNAscope), immunohistochemistry, and RT-qPCR on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tumour samples as diagnostic tools for detecting TERT expression in neuroblastoma. In this study, we detected MYCN amplification in 22 of 222 cases (10%), TERT rearrangements in 18 of 220 cases (8%), and ALT activation in 39 of 222 cases (18%) using fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH). By RNA in situ hybridisation, 36 of 210 (17%) pretreatment neuroblastomas were found to have TERT overexpression, which was significantly associated with the high-risk group (33/78, 42%), TERT rearrangements (16/18, 89%), and MYCN amplification (13/22, 59%). None of the tumours with ALT showed TERT staining. In our study, 19 of the 55 MYCN non-amplified high-risk neuroblastomas displayed TERT mRNA expression, including 13 of the 14 TERT rearrangements, none of the 30 ALT-positive cases, and a significant proportion (6/11, 55%) that did not have the aforementioned genomic anomalies. RT-qPCR results correlated well with RNAscope levels (Spearman's rho=0.621, p<0.001, n=94). In conclusion, TERT RNA in situ hybridisation and RT-qPCR are suitable methods to evaluate TERT expression in neuroblastoma. The combination of detection of the genomic alterations and TERT mRNA expression is a powerful strategy for TMM activation detection, which can categorise neuroblastomas into multiple clinical subgroups for risk stratification in routine histopathology practice.

An off-the-shelf small extracellular vesicle nanomedicine for tumor targeting therapy

Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) have shown excellent prospects as drug delivery systems for cancer therapy. However, the inherent non-targeting and short blood circulation characteristics severely restrict their practical applications as a delivery system. In addition, post-encapsulating drugs into sEVs also remains challenging. Here, we constructed an engineered cell line that secreted multifunctional sEVs (termed NBsEV204) with 7D12 (an anti-EGFR nanobody) and hCD47 decorations on their surface, as well as high levels of miR-204-5p encapsulation. NBsEV204 exhibited extended blood circulation and improved macrophage-mediated phagocytosis of tumor cells by blocking CD47 signaling. Importantly, NBsEV204 specifically targeted EGFR+ tumor cells and showed robust tumor-suppressive effects both in vitro and in vivo. Overall, this study provides a convenient and feasible method to produce off-the-shelf anticancer sEV nanomedicine, which exhibits tremendous potential for clinical translation.

Test of CP Symmetry in Hyperon to Neutron Decays

The quantum entangled J/ψ→Σ^{+}Σ[over ¯]^{-} pairs from (1.0087±0.0044)×10^{10}  J/ψ events taken by the BESIII detector are used to study the nonleptonic two-body weak decays Σ^{+}→nπ^{+} and Σ[over ¯]^{-}→n[over ¯]π^{-}. The CP-odd weak decay parameters of the decays Σ^{+}→nπ^{+} (α_{+}) and Σ[over ¯]^{-}→n[over ¯]π^{-} (α[over ¯]_{-}) are determined to be 0.0481±0.0031_{stat}±0.0019_{syst} and -0.0565±0.0047_{stat}±0.0022_{syst}, respectively. The decay parameter α[over ¯]_{-} is measured for the first time, and the accuracy of α_{+} is improved by a factor of 4 compared to the previous results. The simultaneously determined decay parameters allow the first precision CP symmetry test for any hyperon decay with a neutron in the final state with the measurement of A_{CP}=(α_{+}+α[over ¯]_{-})/(α_{+}-α[over ¯]_{-})=-0.080±0.052_{stat}±0.028_{syst}. Assuming CP conservation, the average decay parameter is determined as ⟨α_{+}⟩=(α_{+}-α[over ¯]_{-})/2=-0.0506±0.0026_{stat}±0.0019_{syst}, while the ratios α_{+}/α_{0} and α[over ¯]_{-}/α[over ¯]_{0} are -0.0490±0.0032_{stat}±0.0021_{syst} and -0.0571±0.0053_{stat}±0.0032_{syst}, where α_{0} and α[over ¯]_{0} are the decay parameters of the decays Σ^{+}→pπ^{0} and Σ[over ¯]^{-}→p[over ¯]π^{0}, respectively.

Measurement of Energy-Dependent Pair-Production Cross Section and Electromagnetic Form Factors of a Charmed Baryon

We study the process e^{+}e^{-}→Λ_{c}^{+}Λ[over ¯]_{c}^{-} at twelve center-of-mass energies from 4.6119 to 4.9509 GeV using data samples collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The Born cross sections and effective form factors (|G_{eff}|) are determined with unprecedented precision after combining the single and double-tag methods based on the decay process Λ_{c}^{+}→pK^{-}π^{+}. Flat cross sections around 4.63 GeV are obtained and no indication of the resonant structure Y(4630), as reported by Belle, is found. In addition, no oscillatory behavior is discerned in the |G_{eff}| energy dependence of Λ_{c}^{+}, in contrast to what is seen for the proton and neutron cases. Analyzing the cross section together with the polar-angle distribution of the Λ_{c}^{+} baryon at each energy point, the moduli of electric and magnetic form factors (|G_{E}| and |G_{M}|) are extracted and separated. For the first time, the energy dependence of the form factor ratio |G_{E}/G_{M}| is observed, which can be well described by an oscillatory function.

Determination of Spin-Parity Quantum Numbers for the Narrow Structure near the pΛ[over ¯] Threshold in e^{+}e^{-}→pK^{-}Λ[over ¯]+c.c

A narrow structure in the pΛ[over ¯] system near the mass threshold, named as X(2085), is observed in the process e^{+}e^{-}→pK^{-}Λ[over ¯] with a statistical significance greater than 20σ. Its spin and parity are determined for the first time to be J^{P}=1^{+} in an amplitude analysis, with a statistical significance greater than 5σ over other quantum numbers (0^{-},1^{-} and 2^{+}). The pole positions of X(2085) are measured to be M_{pole}=(2084_{-2}^{+4}±9)  MeV and Γ_{pole}=(58_{-3}^{+4}±25)  MeV, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic. The analysis is based on the study of the process e^{+}e^{-}→pK^{-}Λ[over ¯] and uses the data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the center-of-mass energies sqrt[s]=4.008, 4.178, 4.226, 4.258, 4.416, and 4.682 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 8.35  fb^{-1}.

Precise Measurement of the e^{+}e^{-}→D_{s}^{*+}D_{s}^{*-} Cross Sections at Center-of-Mass Energies from Threshold to 4.95 GeV

The process e^{+}e^{-}→D_{s}^{*+}D_{s}^{*-} is studied with a semi-inclusive method using data samples at center-of-mass energies from threshold to 4.95 GeV collected with the BESIII detector operating at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider. The Born cross sections of the process are measured for the first time with high precision in this energy region. Two resonance structures are observed in the energy-dependent cross sections around 4.2 and 4.4 GeV. By fitting the cross sections with a coherent sum of three Breit-Wigner amplitudes and one phase-space amplitude, the two significant structures are assigned masses of (4186.8±8.7±30) and (4414.6±3.4±6.1)  MeV/c^{2}, widths of (55±15±53) and (122.5±7.5±8.1)  MeV, where the first errors are statistical and the second ones are systematic. The inclusion of a third Breit-Wigner amplitude is necessary to describe a structure around 4.79 GeV.

First Experimental Study of the Purely Leptonic Decay D_{s}^{*+}→e^{+}ν_{e}

Using 7.33  fb^{-1} of e^{+}e^{-} collision data taken with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we report the first experimental study of the purely leptonic decay D_{s}^{*+}→e^{+}ν_{e}. Our data contain a signal of this decay with a statistical significance of 2.9σ. The branching fraction of D_{s}^{*+}→e^{+}ν_{e} is measured to be (2.1_{-0.9_{stat}}^{+1.2}±0.2_{syst})×10^{-5}, corresponding to an upper limit of 4.0×10^{-5} at the 90% confidence level. Taking the total width of the D_{s}^{*+} [(0.070±0.028)  keV] predicted with the radiative D_{s}^{*+} decay from the lattice QCD calculation as input, the decay constant of the D_{s}^{*+} is determined to be f_{D_{s}^{*+}}=(214_{-46_{stat}}^{+61}±44_{syst})  MeV, corresponding to an upper limit of 354 MeV at the 90% confidence level.

Search for Λ[over ¯]-Λ Baryon-Number-Violating Oscillations in the Decay J/ψ→pK^{-}Λ[over ¯]+c.c

We report on the first search for Λ[over ¯]-Λ oscillations in the decay J/ψ→pK^{-}Λ[over ¯]+c.c. by analyzing 1.31×10^{9}  J/ψ events accumulated with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The J/ψ events are produced using e^{+}e^{-} collisions at a center of mass energy sqrt[s]=3.097  GeV. No evidence for hyperon oscillations is observed. The upper limit for the oscillation rate of Λ[over ¯] to Λ hyperons is determined to be P(Λ)=[B(J/ψ→pK^{-}Λ+c.c.)/B(J/ψ→pK^{-}Λ[over ¯]+c.c.)]<4.4×10^{-6} corresponding to an oscillation parameter δm_{ΛΛ[over ¯]} of less than 3.8×10^{-18}  GeV at the 90% confidence level.

ELOA promotes tumor growth and metastasis by activating RBP1 in gastric cancer

BACKGROUND

Elongin A (ELOA), our previous work revealed, serves as a novel tumor suppressor in colorectal cancer. However, the function and mechanism of ELOA in other cancer types, including gastric cancer (GC), remain to be elucidated.

METHODS

The expression of ELOA was measured by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and western blot. The effects of ELOA on GC growth and metastasis were assessed through a series of in-vitro and in-vivo assays. Furthermore, the potential mechanism of ELOA was revealed by RNA sequencing, dual luciferase reporter assay, chromatin immunoprecipitation, and rescue experiments in GC.

RESULTS

We uncovered increased expression of ELOA in GC tissues compared with paired normal tissues via bioinformatic analyses and our sample detection. Enhanced ELOA expression in GC tissues was obviously correlated with poor tumor differentiation, lymph node metastasis, advanced tumor stage, and a poor prognosis. A series of functional experiments showed that ELOA promoted the proliferation and metastasis of GC. Mechanistically, we revealed that the decreased levels of miR-490-3p caused the upregulation of ELOA in GC. Both RNA-seq and ChIP assays revealed that ELOA transcriptionally activated retinol-binding protein 1 (RBP1) by binding to its promotor. Furthermore, specific knockdown of RBP1 reduced the tumor-promoting ability of ELOA in GC cells.

CONCLUSIONS

In summary, our findings demonstrate that ELOA exerts oncogenic properties by activating RBP1 expression, providing the basis for a promising therapeutic target in GC.

Abnormal functional connectivity in the habenula is associated with subjective hyperarousal state in chronic insomnia disorder

Background

The hyperarousal process model plays a central role in the physiology of chronic insomnia disorder (CID). Recent evidence has demonstrated that the habenula is involved in the arousal and sleep-wake cycle. However, whether the intrinsic habenular functional network contributes to the underlying mechanism of CID and its relationship to the arousal state in CID remains unclear.

Methods

This single-centered study included 34 patients with subjective CID and 22 matched good sleep control (GSC), and underwent a series of neuropsychological tests and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scans. The habenular functional network was assessed using seed-based functional connectivity (FC) analysis. The subjective arousal state was evaluated with the hyperarousal scale (HAS). Alterations in the habenular FC network and their clinical significance in patients with CID were explored.

Results

Compared with the GSC group, the CID group showed decreased habenular FC in the left caudate nucleus and right inferior parietal lobule and increased FC in the right habenula, bilateral calcarine cortex, and posterior cingulate cortex. The decreased FC between the left habenula and caudate nucleus was associated with an increased arousal state in the CID group.

Conclusion

The present results provide evidence for a dysfunctional habenular network in patients with CID. These findings extend our understanding of the neuropathological mechanisms underlying the hyperarousal model in chronic insomnia.

Network analysis identifies a gene biomarker panel for sepsis-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome

BACKGROUND

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is characterized by non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema caused by inflammation, which can lead to serious respiratory complications. Due to the high mortality of ARDS caused by sepsis, biological markers that enable early diagnosis are urgently needed for clinical treatment.

METHODS

In the present study, we used the public microarray data of whole blood from patients with sepsis-induced ARDS, patients with sepsis-alone and healthy controls to perform an integrated analysis based on differential expressed genes (DEGs) and co-expression network to identify the key genes and pathways related to the development of sepsis into ARDS that may be key targets for diagnosis and treatment.

RESULTS

Compared with controls, we identified 180 DEGs in the sepsis-alone group and 152 DEGs in the sepsis-induced ARDS group. About 70% of these genes were unique to the two groups. Functional analysis of DEGs showed that neutrophil-mediated inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction are the main features of ARDS induced by sepsis. Gene network analysis identified key modules and screened out key regulatory genes related to ARDS. The key genes and their upstream regulators comprised a gene panel, including EOMES, LTF, CSF1R, HLA-DRA, IRF8 and MPEG1. Compared with the healthy controls, the panel had an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.900 and 0.914 for sepsis-alone group and sepsis-induced ARDS group, respectively. The AUC was 0.746 between the sepsis-alone group and sepsis-induced ARDS group. Moreover, the panel of another independent blood transcriptional expression profile dataset showed the AUC was 0.769 in diagnosing sepsis-alone group and sepsis-induced ARDS group.

CONCLUSIONS

Taken together, our method contributes to the diagnosis of sepsis and sepsis-induced ARDS. The biological pathway involved in this gene biomarker panel may also be a critical target in combating ARDS caused by sepsis.

First Study of Reaction Ξ^{0}n→Ξ^{-}p Using Ξ^{0}-Nucleus Scattering at an Electron-Positron Collider

Using (1.0087±0.0044)×10^{10}  J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, the process Ξ^{0}n→Ξ^{-}p is studied, where the Ξ^{0} baryon is produced in the process J/ψ→Ξ^{0}Ξ[over ¯]^{0} and the neutron is a component of the ^{9}Be, ^{12}C, and ^{197}Au nuclei in the beam pipe. A clear signal is observed with a statistical significance of 7.1σ. The cross section of the reaction Ξ^{0}+^{9}Be→Ξ^{-}+p+^{8}Be is determined to be σ(Ξ^{0}+^{9}Be→Ξ^{-}+p+^{8}Be)=(22.1±5.3_{stat}±4.5_{sys})  mb at the Ξ^{0} momentum of 0.818  GeV/c, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. No significant H-dibaryon signal is observed in the Ξ^{-}p final state. This is the first study of hyperon-nucleon interactions in electron-positron collisions and opens up a new direction for such research.

[Structural changes of the frontal cortex in depressed mice are associated with decreased expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the changes in gray matter volume in depressive-like mice and explore the possible mechanism.

METHODS

Twenty-four 6-week-old C57 mice were randomized equally into control group and model group, and the mice in the model group were subjected to chronic unpredictable mild stimulation (CUMS) for 35 days. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed to examine structural changes of the grey matter volume in depressive-like mice. The expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the grey matter of the mice was detected using Western blotting and immunofluorescence staining.

RESULTS

Compared with the control mice, the mice with CUMS showed significantly decreased central walking distance in the open field test (P < 0.05) and increased immobile time in forced swimming test (P < 0.05). Magnetic resonance imaging showed that the volume of the frontal cortex was significantly decreased in CUMS mice (P < 0.001, when the mass level was greater than or equal to 10 756, the FDRc was corrected with P=0.05). Western blotting showed that the expression of mature BDNF in the frontal cortex was significantly decreased in CUMS mice (P < 0.05), and its expression began to decrease after the exposure to CUMS as shown by immunofluorescence staining. The volume of different clusters obtained by voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis was correlated with the expression level of mature BDNF detected by Western blotting (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The decrease of frontal cortex volume after CUMS is related with the reduction of mature BDNF expression in the frontal cortex.

Phase Equilibrium Studies in the Geothermal Energy Development: The Effect of Hydrogen Bond on the Multi-Component Fluid

Geothermal energy has become an emerging resource with both large reserves and environmental friendliness and is playing an increasingly important role in the current energy transition progress. In this paper, a thermodynamically consistent NVT flash model is developed to consider the effect of hydrogen bond on the phase equilibrium states of multi-component fluid to resolve the challenges of the special thermodynamic characteristic of water as the main working fluid. In order to provide practical suggestions to the industry, a number of possible effects have been investigated on the phase equilibrium states, including the hydrogen bond, environmental temperature, and fluid compositions. The calculated phase stability and phase splitting results can provide thermodynamic foundations for the establishment of the multi-component multi-phase flow model and also help optimize the development process to control the phase transitions for a number of engineering purposes.

Measurements of Normalized Differential Cross Sections of Inclusive π^{0} and K_{S}^{0} Production in e^{+}e^{-} Annihilation at Energies from 2.2324 to 3.6710 GeV

Based on electron positron collision data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage rings, the differential cross sections of inclusive π^{0} and K_{S}^{0} production as a function of hadron momentum, normalized by the total cross section of the e^{+}e^{-}→hadrons process, are measured at six center-of-mass energies from 2.2324 to 3.6710 GeV. Our results, which cover a relative hadron energy range from 0.1 to 0.9, significantly deviate from several theoretical calculations based on existing fragmentation functions.

Differentiating between tuberculous and non-tuberculous pleural effusions using the pleural fluid ratio of 10× adenosine deaminase/lactate dehydrogenase

Background

Adenosine deaminase (ADA) is a sensitive marker of tuberculous pleural effusion (TBPE). However, in pleural effusion (PE), the detection of ADA alone cannot be used to determine whether the increase in the ADA level is caused by the rising proportion of macrophages and lymphocytes in the cell components or by the increase in the total cell number. The diagnostic precision of ADA is probably restricted due to the false positive and negative results. Thus, we explored the clinical value of the ratio of PE ADA to lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in differentiating between TBPE and non-TBPE.

Methods

Patients hospitalized with PEs between January 2018 and December 2021 were retrospectively recruited for this study. We analyzed the values of ADA, LDH, and 10× ADA/LDH in the patients with TBPE and non-TBPE. We also determined the sensitivity, specificity, Youden index, and area under the curve for 10× ADA/LDH at different ADA levels and evaluated its diagnostic accuracy.

Results

In total, 382 patients with PEs were included in the study. Among whom, 144 were diagnosed with TBPE, this supposes a "pre-test probability" >40%. It is quite high, 134 with malignant PEs, 19 with parapneumonic PEs, 43 with empyema, 24 with transudate PEs, and 18 with other types of PE of a known etiology. The ADA levels were positively correlated with the LDH levels in TBPE. LDH levels usually increase in response to cell damage or cell death. The 10× ADA/LDH level was significantly increased in the TBPE patients. In addition, the 10× ADA/LDH level increased as the ADA level increased in TBPE. To differentiate between TBPE and non-TBPE, the optimal cut-off value of 10× ADA/LDH at different ADA levels was assessed using receiver operating curves. At an ADA level >20 U/L, 10× ADA/LDH showed the best diagnostic performance, and had a specificity and sensitivity of 0.94 (95% CI: 0.84-0.98) and 0.95 (95% CI: 0.88-0.98), respectively.

Conclusions

The 10× ADA/LDH dependent diagnostic index can be used to distinguish TBPE from non-TBPE and could be used to guide future clinical decisions.

Precision Measurement of the Decay Σ^{+}→pγ in the Process J/ψ→Σ^{+}Σ[over ¯]^{-}

Using (10 087±44)×10^{6} J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, the radiative hyperon decay Σ^{+}→pγ is studied at an electron-positron collider experiment for the first time. The absolute branching fraction is measured to be (0.996±0.021_{stat}±0.018_{syst})×10^{-3}, which is lower than its world average value by 4.2 standard deviations. Its decay asymmetry parameter is determined to be -0.652±0.056_{stat}±0.020_{syst}. The branching fraction and decay asymmetry parameter are the most precise to date, and the accuracies are improved by 78% and 34%, respectively.

BRCA2 mutation in advanced lung squamous cell carcinoma treated with Olaparib and a PD-1 inhibitor: a case report

Background

Mutations in the human breast cancer susceptibility gene 2 (breast cancer 2, BRCA2) increase the risk of breast, ovarian and other cancers. Olaparib, an oral poly[adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-ribose] polymerase (PARP) inhibitor, is usually prescribed to treat BRCA mutated tumors, especially breast and ovarian cancers. Programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) inhibitors have revolutionized the treatment of lung cancer and many other cancers by destroying the interaction between receptors with ligands in the tumor-immune microenvironment and enabling T cells to recognize and attack cancer cells.

Case description

In our study, we report a patient with advanced BRCA2 lung squamous cell carcinoma who received platinum-based chemotherapy combined with paclitaxel. Seven months later, the disease progressed. BRCA2 mutations were detected in peripheral blood by next-generation sequencing. After 2 months of treatment with Olaparib combined with Cindilimab, the patient was in partial remission and the progression-free survival (PFS) lasted for 6 months, but the patient developed immune renal damage.

Conclusions

This study adds to the clinical data for the treatment of BRCA2 mutant non-small cell lung cancer by demonstrating that lung squamous cell carcinoma has a good response to PARP inhibitors. It also serves as a reminder that there may still be some negative effects from targeted superimposed immunotherapy.

A simple paper-based nickel nanocluster-europium mixed ratio fluorescent probe for rapid visual sensing of tetracyclines

In this work, a ratiometric fluorometric sensor based on nickel nanoclusters (NiNCs)-europium complex (NiNCs-Eu³⁺) was constructed for the highly selectivity detection of tetracyclines (TCs) in water samples. In the presence of TCs, the blue fluorescence of the sensor NiNCs-Eu³⁺ was quenched at 430 nm and the characteristic red fluorescence of Eu³⁺-TCs appeared at 620 nm because of the combined help of inner filter effect (IFE) and antenna effect. Under the optimized conditions (100 mM Eu³⁺ (100 µL); temperature (25℃); reaction time (10 min), HEPES buffer solution (pH = 7.0)), the sensor offered a wide detection range of tetracycline (TC) and oxytetracycline (OTC) from 0.1 to 50 μM with the detection limit (LOD) of 25 nM and 21 nM, respectively. Moreover, the sensor was able to detect of TC and OTC in tap and lake water with high recovery rate (89.10%-97.60%). In addition, the portable paper-based sensor was constructed using filter paper embedded with NiNCs-Eu³⁺. The distinct fluorescent color of the paper-based sensor varied from bright blue to red against different concentrations of TC and OTC. These above findings demonstrated the potential for wide application of as-prepared ratio metric fluorescence sensor for visual detection of TCs in water samples.
