Monolayer-Based Single-Photon Source in a Liquid-Helium-Free Open Cavity Featuring 65% Brightness and Quantum Coherence

Solid-state single-photon sources are central building blocks in quantum information processing. Atomically thin crystals have emerged as sources of nonclassical light; however, they perform below the state-of-the-art devices based on volume crystals. Here, we implement a bright single-photon source based on an atomically thin sheet of WSe2 coupled to a tunable optical cavity in a liquid-helium-free cryostat without the further need for active stabilization. Its performance is characterized by high single-photon purity (g(2)(0) = 4.7 ± 0.7%) and record-high, first-lens brightness of linearly polarized photons of 65 ± 4%, representing a decisive step toward real-world quantum applications. The high performance of our devices allows us to observe two-photon interference in a Hong-Ou-Mandel experiment with 2% visibility limited by the emitter coherence time and setup resolution. Our results thus demonstrate that the combination of the unique properties of two-dimensional materials and versatile open cavities emerges as an inspiring avenue for novel quantum optoelectronic devices.

Spatial coherence of room-temperature monolayer WSe2 exciton-polaritons in a trap

The emergence of spatial and temporal coherence of light emitted from solid-state systems is a fundamental phenomenon intrinsically aligned with the control of light-matter coupling. It is canonical for laser oscillation, emerges in the superradiance of collective emitters, and has been investigated in bosonic condensates of thermalized light, as well as exciton-polaritons. Our room temperature experiments show the strong light-matter coupling between microcavity photons and excitons in atomically thin WSe₂. We evidence the density-dependent expansion of spatial and temporal coherence of the emitted light from the spatially confined system ground-state, which is accompanied by a threshold-like response of the emitted light intensity. Additionally, valley-physics is manifested in the presence of an external magnetic field, which allows us to manipulate K and K' polaritons via the valley-Zeeman-effect. Our findings validate the potential of atomically thin crystals as versatile components of coherent light-sources, and in valleytronic applications at room temperature.

Tunable exciton-polaritons emerging from WS2 monolayer excitons in a photonic lattice at room temperature

Engineering non-linear hybrid light-matter states in tailored lattices is a central research strategy for the simulation of complex Hamiltonians. Excitons in atomically thin crystals are an ideal active medium for such purposes, since they couple strongly with light and bear the potential to harness giant non-linearities and interactions while presenting a simple sample-processing and room temperature operability. We demonstrate lattice polaritons, based on an open, high-quality optical cavity, with an imprinted photonic lattice strongly coupled to excitons in a WS2 monolayer. We experimentally observe the emergence of the canonical band-structure of particles in a one-dimensional lattice at room temperature, and demonstrate frequency reconfigurability over a spectral window exceeding 85 meV, as well as the systematic variation of the nearest-neighbour coupling, reflected by a tunability in the bandwidth of the p-band polaritons by 7 meV. The technology presented in this work is a critical demonstration towards reconfigurable photonic emulators operated with non-linear photonic fluids, offering a simple experimental implementation and working at ambient conditions.

Prospektive Untersuchung zur Wertigkeit der postmortalen Computertomographie im Vergleich zur Autopsie

PURPOSE

To assess the diagnostic value of postmortem computed tomography (CT) in comparison to autopsy.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Twenty-seven cadavers were examined by sequential cranial CT and helical CT through the neck, thorax and abdomen and subsequently underwent an autopsy with histomorphologic examination of the pathologic specimens. The findings of CT, autopsy and histology were registered and compared by three radiologists and one specialist for forensic medicine, using a data entry form.

RESULTS

In 19 of 27 cases, the findings explaining the cause of death were concordant for CT and autopsy. Intracranial, intraspinal and intracardiac gas accumulations (n = 12) were registered by CT alone. The detection of skull fractures was equal for both methods (n = 3). CT showed diagnostic problems in the assessment of pneumonic infiltrations (n = 16) and pulmonary edema (n = 21).

CONCLUSION

CT is a useful and complementary method to autopsy.

Exposure to elevated D-glucose concentrations modulates vascular endothelial cell vasodilatory response

The possible role of endothelial dysfunction in early stages of uncomplicated diabetes mellitus was investigated in porcine aortic endothelial cells. Prolonged exposure to various D-glucose concentrations resulted in concentration-dependent amplification of agonist-induced Ca2+ mobilization, whereas L-glucose and D-mannitol failed to mimic the effect of D-glucose. This stimulatory effect of high D-glucose on endothelial Ca2+ mobilization could be antagonized by coincubation with cytochalasin B, which prevented D-glucose uptake into the cells. In agreement with its effect on agonist-induced Ca2+ response, prolonged preincubation with pathological D-glucose concentrations amplified formation of endothelium-derived relaxing factor, which is well established to be strictly attributable to increases in endothelial free Ca2+. In contrast to endothelium-derived relaxing factor formation stimulated by receptor-interacting autacoids, preincubation with high D-glucose failed to modulate A 23,187-induced endothelium-derived relaxing factor formation, which is attributable to unphysiological increases in endothelial free Ca2+ by this ionophore. Similar to its effect on D-glucose-mediated amplification of agonist-stimulated Ca2+ mobilization, cytochalasin B abolished the stimulatory effect of high D-glucose on endothelium-derived relaxing factor formation. We therefore suggest that prolonged exposure to pathological high D-glucose concentrations results in an enhanced endothelium-derived relaxing factor formation caused by amplification of agonist-stimulated Ca2+ mobilization in endothelial cells. This mechanism may be of particular importance representing a possible basis of pathological vasodilation and reduced peripheral resistance in early stages of diabetes mellitus.
