Effects of Sodium/Glucose Cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) Inhibitors on Cardiac Imaging Parameters: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Recent studies have shown that sodium/glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors might exert favourable changes on cardiac parameters as observed on cardiovascular imaging. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the effects of SGLT2 inhibitors on cardiac imaging parameters. Four electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, Scopus) were searched for studies in which the effects of SGLT2 inhibitors on cardiac imaging parameters were examined. Studies in which a population was administered SGLT2 inhibitors and analysed by echocardiography and/or cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging were included. Random-effects pair-wise meta-analysis models were utilized to summarize the studies. A total of 11 randomized controlled trials was included with a combined cohort of 910 patients. Comparing patients receiving SGLT2 inhibitors with subjects receiving placebo, the mean change in CMR-measured left ventricular mass (LVM) was −3.87 g (95% confidence interval [CI], −7.77 to 0.04), that in left ventricular end-systolic volume (LVESV) was −5.96 mL (95% CI, −10.52 to −1.41) for combined LVESV outcomes, that in left atrial volume index (LAVi) was −1.78 mL/m² (95% CI, −3.01 to −0.55) for combined LAVi outcomes, and that in echocardiography-measured E/e′ was −0.73 (95% CI, −1.43 to −0.03). Between-group differences were not observed in LVM and LVESV after indexation. The only between-group difference that persisted was for LAVi. Treatment with SGLT2 inhibitors resulted in reduction in LAVi and E/e′ on imaging, indicating they might have an effect on outcomes associated with LV diastolic function.

A Survey of Local Preclinical and Clinical Medical Students’ Attitudes towards Radiology

Introduction: This study compares the attitudes between preclinical and clinical medical students towards radiology, following the introduction of a new radiology curriculum for 1st year students. Materials and Methods: Revision of the 1st year medical school curriculum for the academic year of 2008/9 with the inclusion of 13 one-hour formal radiology lectures integrated with each body system was done in an undergraduate Southeast Asian medical school. In the old curriculum, 1st and 2nd year medical students are not exposed to radiology. They received limited radiology teaching in their 3rd and 5th years with 2 one-hour lectures as part of their medicine and surgery rotations. In the 4th year, they have a one week non-examinable posting in radiology. A survey was administered to preclinical (new curriculum) and clinical (old curriculum) students. Survey responses were tabulated and attitudes between preclinical and clinical students were compared. Results: More than half of the preclinical students (155 out of 270 students, 59%) and 90 out of 720 clinical students (12.5%) responded. Students exposed to the new curriculum had attended one or two dedicated radiology lectures and were considering radiology as a clinical elective. Both groups of students did not feel familiar with radiology as with other specialties, were not considering radiology as a career, but felt that radiology was interesting and important to the overall practice of medicine. Conclusions: Exposure of 1st year students to radiology increases their interest in the subject. Further intervention, fi ne-tuning of the curriculum and follow-up surveys will be carried out to see if this interest persists throughout their clinical years. Hybrid status of kuwini, Mangifera odorata Griff. (Anacardiaceae) verified by amplified fragment length polymorphism

Mangifera odorata Griff. (Anacardiaceae), was suggested to be a hybrid between M. indica L. and M. foetida Lour. due to morphological intermediacy. Results from this study show that M. indica and M. foetida produced unique amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) profiles. Mangifera odorata did not produce any unique bands. All the M. odorata samples additively inherit bands specific to M. indica and M. foetida, which strongly suggested the hybrid origin. Three major clusters were produced in the phenogram. All samples of M. indica, M. foetida and M. odorata segregated distinctly. Mangifera odorata was closer to M. foetida than to M. indica, indicating that backcrossing with M. foetida might have taken place. AFLP analysis therefore verified the hybrid status of M. odorata.
