Structure, Mössbauer, electrical, and γ-ray attenuation-properties of magnesium zinc ferrite synthesized co-precipitation method

For technical and radioprotection causes, it has become essential to find new trends of smart materials which used as protection from ionizing radiation. To overcome the undesirable properties in lead aprons and provide the proper or better shielding properties against ionizing radiation, the tendency is now going to use ferrite as a shielding material. The co-precipitation method was utilized to prevent any foreign phases in the investigated MZN nano-ferrite. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transmission infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) methods were used to analyze the manufactured sample. As proven by XRD and FTIR, the studied materials have their unique spinel phase with cubic structure Fd3m space group. The DC resistivity of Mg-Zn ferrite was carried out in the temperature range (77-295 K), and its dependence on temperature indicates that there are different charge transport mechanisms. The Mössbauer spectra analysis confirmed that the ferrimagnetic to superparamagnetic phase transition behaviour depends on Zn concentration. The incorporation of Zn to MZF enhanced the nano-ferrite density, whereas the addition of different Zn-oxides reduced the density for nano-ferrite samples. This variation in density changed the radiation shielding results. The sample containing high Zn (MZF-0.5) gives us better results in radiation shielding properties at low gamma, so this sample is superior in shielding results for charged particles at low energy. Finally, the possibility to use MZN nano-ferrite with various content in different ionizing radiation shielding fields can be concluded.

An extended assessment of natural radioactivity in the sediments of the mid-region of the Egyptian Red Sea coast

In this study, nearly 84 marine sediment samples were collected from twelve points in four cities (Quseir, Safaga, Hurghada, and Ras Gharib) along the Egyptian Red Sea sectors. The collected samples were extensively examined to estimate the natural radioactivity level. The obtained results were compared to the reported ranges from other locations in different countries. Hazardous radiation parameters such as radium equivalent, annual dose, and external hazards were estimated and compared to United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) recommended levels. The values were recorded in the first natural radioactivity database of coastal sediments from Egyptian Red Sea cities. The dose rate for certain organs was evaluated. The results showed that Red Sea beach sediments are safe in terms of natural radioactivity. It can be concluded that they do not pose a risk to tourists going to the beaches for recreation or to sailors and fishers involved in economic activities along the Egyptian Red Sea coast.

SOIL-SOYBEAN TRANSFER FACTOR OF NATURAL RADIONUCLIDES IN DIFFERENT SOIL TEXTURES AND THE ASSESSMENT OF COMMITTED EFFECTIVE DOSE

From three different soil textures (clay, silt and sand), 36 soil and soybeans samples were accumulated from the agricultural area of EL-Mynia governorate in Upper Egypt, between (27°36'19.44″N; 30°30'14.14″ E) and (28°48'28.45″ N; 31°00'32.27″ E). Soil textures were prepared by particle size distribution through a pipette method. Its radioactivity measurements were performed with a NaI (Tl) and 3 × 3 inch crystal. The transfer factor (TF) of natural radionuclides from soil to soybeans was calculated. The value of the TF for 226Ra in clay soil ranges from 0.27 ± 0.03 to 0.42 ± 0.05, in sandy soil it ranges from 0.21 ± 0.02 to 0.57 ± 0.07 and in silt soil it ranges from 0.25 ± 0.03 to 0.53 ± 0.06. The TF for 232Th in clay soil ranges from 0.22 ± 0.03 to 0.90 ± 0.12, in sandy soil it ranges from 0.21 ± 0.03 to 1.00 ± 0.13, while in silt soil it ranges from 0.25 ± 0.03 to 0.88 ± 0.12. The TF for 40K in clay soil ranges from 0.95 ± 0.13 to 2.05 ± 0.29, in sandy soil it ranges from 1.21 ± 0.17 to 2.52 ± 0.35 and in silt soil it ranges and from 1.01 ± 0.14 to 1.46 ± 0.26.The results show that the committed effective dose from soybean consumption is between 54.5 and 103.4 μSv y-1 assuming consumption of 20 kg y-1.

Quantitative measurement of natural radioactivity in some roofing tile materials used in upper Egypt

The quantitative measurement of radionuclides ((226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K) in some roofing tile materials (granite, alabaster, marble, traditional and advanced ceramic) used in Upper Egypt is presented in this paper. Measurements were done by using gamma spectrometry (NaI (Tl) 3" × 3"). The values of concentration of natural radionuclides were in the following ranges: 12-78.9 Bq kg(-1) for (226)Ra, 8.4-113.1 Bq kg(-1) for (232)Th and 94.9-509 Bq kg(-1)for (40)K. The activity concentration index (I), the specific dose rates indoors ( ) and the annual effective dose (DE) due to gamma radiation were calculated for each investigated sample. The lowest value of I is 0.19 for alabaster, while the highest one is 0.88 for traditional and advanced ceramic. The ranges of DE are between 0.03 and 0.13 mSv, it is below the maximal permitted values, so that the examined materials could be used as roofing tiles in the construction of new buildings.

Natural radionuclide concentrations in granite rocks in Aswan and Central-Southern Eastern Desert, Egypt and their radiological implications

Different types of granites, used extensively in local construction, were collected from five localities in Egypt, namely: Abu Ziran (Central Eastern Desert), Gabal El Maesala (Aswan) and three areas from Wadi Allaqi, (Gabal Abu Marw, Gabal Haumor and Gabal um Shalman), in the South Eastern Desert. Granite samples were studied radiologically, petrographically and geochemically. The contents of natural radionuclides ((226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K) were measured in investigated samples by using gamma spectrometry [NaI (Tl) 3'×3']. The activity concentrations of (226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K in the selected granite samples ranged from 9±0.5 to 111±7, 8±1 to 75±4 and 100±6 to 790±40 Bq kg(-1), respectively. The external hazard index (H(ex)), absorbed dose and annual effective dose rate were evaluated to assess the radiation hazard for people living in dwellings made of the materials studied. The calculated radium equivalents were lower than the values recommended for construction materials (370 Bq kg(-1)). The excess lifetime cancer risks were also calculated. Petrographically, the granites studied are varied in the form of potash-feldspar, quartz, plagioclase, mica and hornblende. The accessory minerals are zircon, apatite and allanite. Geochemically, the chemical composition of the granite is studied especially for major oxides. They are characterized to have SiO(2), K(2)O, Na(2)O and Al(2)O(3) with depletion in CaO, MgO, TiO(2) and P(2)O(5).

An assessment of the external radiological impact in granites and pegmatite in central Eastern Desert in Egypt with elevated natural radioactivity

The contents of natural radionuclides ((226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K) were measured in investigated samples (granite Gabal Ras Barud, Eastern Desert in Egypt) by using gamma spectrometry (NaI (Tl) 3″×3″). The activities of (226)Ra, (232)Th series and (40)K are between (3.8±0.5 and 172.8±1135.1±56.8 8.6), (2.3±0.3 and 103.8±5.2) and (53.1±2.7 and 1135.1±56.8) Bq kg(-1), respectively. With average total annual dose being only 67.2 μSv y(-1), this value is about 6.72 % of the 1.0 mSv y(-1) recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP-60, 1990) as the maximum annual dose to members of the public. Geochemical studies revealed that Gabal Ras Barud is formed from a highly fractionated biotite granite, with SiO(2) >75 % and generally enriched in alkali with K/Na >8 %.

Radiological significance of beach sand used for climatotherapy from Safaga, Egypt

As a part of national survey to evaluate natural radioactivity in the environment, concentration levels of radioactivity were analysed for sand samples from Safaga, Egypt, which is an ideal area for climatotherapy of psoriasis. Gamma dose rates of three beaches in Safaga were measured. The values ranged from 195.1 to 210.7 nGy h(-1). The activity concentrations (Bq kg(-1)) of radionuclides 238U series, 232Th series and 40K in three different sand profiles (0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-25 and 25 - 40 cm) were measured using gamma-ray spectrometry. The annual effective doses were 259 microSv y(-1) for Minveila, 255 microSv y(-1) for Ganet Safaga and 239 microSv y(-1) for Masab El-Ghazel beaches. The dose rates, radium equivalent activities and external hazard indices were evaluated and compared with the international data. These results may contribute to the determination of absorbed dose rate reference levels in Red Sea Coast at Safaga city.

Radiological assessment of Abu-Tartur phosphate, Western Desert Egypt

The contents of natural radionuclides ((226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K) were measured in sedimentary phosphate rock samples (Abu-Tartur phosphate, Western Desert Egypt) by using gamma spectrometry (NaI (Tl) 3"x 3"). Phosphate and environmental samples were collected from Abu-Tartur phosphate mine and the surrounding region. The results are discussed and compared with the levels in phosphate rocks from different countries. The activities of (226)Ra, (232)Th series and (40)K are between (14.9 +/- 0.8 and 302.4 +/- 15.2), (2.6 +/- 1.0 and 154.9 +/- 7.8) and (10.0 +/- 0.5 and 368.4 +/- 18.4) Bq kg(-1), respectively. The Abu-Tartur phosphate deposit was found to have lower activity than many others exploited phosphate sedimentary deposits, with its average total annual dose being only 114.6 microSv y(-1). This value is about 11.46% of the 1.0 mSv y(-1) recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP-60, 1990) as the maximum annual dose to members of the public.

Gamma-ray spectroscopic analysis of selected samples from Nile river sediments in upper Egypt

Selected sedimentary samples from different locations on the east and west banks of the Nile River in Upper Egypt were analysed by natural radioactivity measurements to detect the presence of radioactive elements. From the analysis of radiations from 226Ra, 232Th and (40)K isotopes, the samples were found to contain Ra, Th and K in concentrations up to 52 +/- 7.3, 76.2 +/- 6.2 and 351.9 +/- 17.6 Bq kg(-1), respectively. The absorbed dose rate in air was found to be in the range of 9.6-84.8 nGyh(-1). The representative external hazard index values for the corresponding samples were also estimated.

Natural radioactivity levels and radiation hazard indices in granite from Aswan to Wadi El-Allaqi southeastern desert, Egypt

Studies on radiation level and radionuclide distribution in granite from Aswan to Wadi El-Allaqi area that is located in southeastern desert of Egypt were undertaken. The samples collected from five locations: Gabal El Mesala, Umm Hibal, Abu Herigle, Abu Marw and Deneibit El Quleib. The purpose of this study is to provide a baseline map of radioactivity background levels in the investigated area environment, and this study will be used as reference information to assess any changes in the radioactive background level due to geological processes. The highest average values of 226Ra and 232Th concentrations (24.00 and 31.28 Bq kg(-1), respectively) were observed at Abu Herigle region, whereas the highest average value of 40K concentration, 589.95 Bq kg(-1), was detected in Umm Hibal. The absorbed dose rate in air was found to be in the range between 5.40 and 45.11 nGy h(-1), and radium equivalent activity concentration was found in the range between 29.57 and 71.85 Bq kg(-1). Also the representative external hazard index values for the corresponding samples were also estimated and given.

Natural radioactivity and dose assessment for phosphate rocks from Wadi El-Mashash and El-Mahamid Mines, Egypt

The activity concentrations of (226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K have been measured by gamma spectroscopy (sodium iodide NaI(Tl) detector) in phosphate rock samples, collected from the Wadi El-Mashash, a site located in the central eastern desert, and El-Mahamid in the Nile valley, Egypt. The average activity concentrations of (226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K (Bq kg(-1)) in phosphate rocks were 665.8+/-33.4, 329.4+/-17 and 587.6+/-29.4 for Wadi El-Mashash and 566.8+/-28.6, 217.3+/-11.8 and 560.1+/-28 for El-Mahamid, respectively. The corresponding values for shale rocks were 85.2+/-5.7, 93.3+/-5.6 and 303.1+/-15.2 Bq kg(-1), respectively. As a measure of radiation hazard to the occupational workers and public, the Ra equivalent activities, representative level index and dose rates due to natural radionuclides at 1 m above the ground surface were estimated. The calculated external gamma-radiation dose received by the workers of the phosphate mine are 538 and 418 microSv/y, which is far below the permitted dose of 20 mSv/y recommended by the International Commission of Radiation Protection [ICRP-60, 1990.
