Unusual effects of nanowire-nanowire junctions on the persistent photoconductivity in SnO2 nanowire network devices

The persistent photoconductivity (PPC) effect is a commonly observed behavior in SnO2 nanostructures. Here we described and studied this effect through a comparative study, based on measurements of electronic transport using network as well as single devices built from SnO2 nanowires under different experimental conditions. At room temperature, the PPC effect was observed to be more accentuated in single nanowire devices. It was found that nanowire-nanowire junctions play a fundamental role in the device behavior: the decay time of nanowire network (τ = 52 s) is about three orders of magnitude lower than those of single nanowire (τ = 4.57 × 104 s). Additionally, it was confirmed that the PPC effect was directly related to the amount of oxygen present in the environment and it is destroyed with increasing temperature. Furthermore, the PPC effect was interpreted based on the surface effect that depends on the capture/emission of electrons by the surface states.

Preparation and in vitro evaluation of PLA/biphasic calcium phosphate filaments used for fused deposition modelling of scaffolds

Ceramic materials such as calcium phosphates (CaPs) with a composition similar to the mineral phase of bones and polymeric polylactic acid (PLA) are potential candidates for the manufacturing of scaffolds to act as bone substitutes and for tissue engineering applications, due to their bioresorbability and biocompatibility. Variables such as porosity, topography, morphology, and mechanical properties play an essential role in the scaffolds response. In this paper, a polymer/ceramic composite filament of 1.7 mm in diameter based on PLA and biphasic calcium phosphates (BCPs) was obtained by hot-melt extrusion in a single screw extruder. The particles of BCP were obtained by solution-combustion synthesis, and the PLA used was commercial grade. The BCPs ceramics were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopic (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET). It was possible to confirm that the main inorganic phases were hydroxyapatite (HAP) and tricalcium phosphate (TCP) with grain sizes below 100 nm and with high porosity. The Filaments obtained are a bit fragile but were able to be used in fused deposition modelling (FDM) using low-cost commercial printers. The filaments were characterized by SEM and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The in-vitro tests of filaments showed deposition of apatite phases on their surface, non-cytotoxic behavior, adequate cell proliferation and cell adhesion.

Thermal evaporation furnace with improved configuration for growing nanostructured inorganic materials

A tubular furnace specifically designed for growing nanostructured materials is presented in this work. The configuration allows an accurate control of evaporation temperature, substrate temperature, total pressure, oxygen partial pressure, volumetric flow and source-substrate distance, with the possibility of performing both downstream and upstream depositions. In order to illustrate the versatility of the equipment, the furnace was used for growing semiconducting oxide nanostructures under different deposition conditions. Highly crystalline indium oxide nanowires with different morphologies were synthesized by evaporating mixtures of indium oxide and graphite powders with different mass ratios at temperatures between 900 °C and 1050 °C. The nanostructured layers were deposited onto oxidized silicon substrates with patterned gold catalyst in the temperature range from 600 °C to 900 °C. Gas sensors based on these nanowires exhibited enhanced sensitivity towards oxygen, with good response and recovery times.

Response of human alveolar bone-derived cells to a novel poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene)/barium titanate membrane

This study investigated the response of human alveolar bone-derived cells to a novel poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene)/barium titanate (P(VDF-TrFE)/BT) membrane. Osteoblastic cells were cultured in osteogenic conditions either on P(VDF-TrFE)/BT or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) for up to 14 days. At 7 and 14 days, the mRNA expression of Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), Type I collagen (COL I), Osteopontin (OPN), Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), Bone sialoprotein (BSP), and Osteocalcin (OC), key markers of the osteoblastic phenotype, and of Bcl2-associated X protein (Bax), B-cell CLL/lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), and Survivin (SUR), associated with the control of the apoptotic cell death, was assayed by real-time PCR. In situ ALP activity was qualitatively evaluated by means of Fast red staining. Surface characterization was also qualitatively and quantitatively assayed in terms of topography, roughness, and wettability. Cells grown on P(VDF-TrFE)/BT exhibited a significantly higher mRNA expression for all markers compared to the ones on PTFE, except for Bcl-2, which was not detected for both groups. Additionally, Fast red staining was noticeably stronger in cultures on P(VDF-TrFE)/BT at 7 and 14 days. At micron- and submicron scale, SEM images and roughness analysis revealed that PTFE and P(VDF-TrFE)/BT exhibited a smooth topography and a similar roughness, respectively. PTFE membrane displayed higher contact angles compared with P(VDF-TrFE)/BT, as indicated by wettability assay. The novel P(VDF-TrFE)/BT membrane supports the acquisition of the osteoblastic phenotype in vitro, while up-regulating the expression of apoptotic markers. Further in vivo experiments should be carried out to confirm the capacity of P(VDF-TrFE)/BT membrane in promoting bone formation in guided bone regeneration.

Preparation and evaluation of an experimental luting glass ionomer cement to be used in dentistry

The aim of this paper is to compare the fluoride-releasing and mechanical properties of an experimental luting glass ionomer cement, which has a modified composition and a commercial luting cement. The experimental powder was obtained by sol-gel process and then, it was used to prepare the experimental cements. The properties of cement pastes, such as setting time and working time, microhardness and diametral tensile strength were determined. Fluoride release from GICs was evaluated at time intervals of 1, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days in deionized water. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses showed that the surface of the experimental cements is more homogeneous than commercial GICs. The mechanical properties and the measure of liberation of fluoride of the two cements were influenced by ratio powder:liquid and chemical composition of the precursor powders. Experimental cements released less fluoride than commercial cements. However, this liberation was more constant during the analyzed period. Thus, the results obtained in this study indicated that the composition of the experimental powder modified by the niobium can lead the formation of the polysalt matrix with good mechanical properties. In other words, we can say that experimental powder offered considerable promise for exploitation in dental field.
