The isothermal Boltzmann-Gibbs entropy reduction affects survival of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental evidence of the effect of isothermal changes in entropy on a living organism. In greater detail, the effect of the reduction of the total Boltzmann-Gibbs entropy (S) of the aquatic environment on the survival rate and body mass of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster was investigated. The tests were carried out in standard thermodynamic states at room temperature of 296.15 K and ambient atmospheric pressure of 1 bar. Two variants of entropy reduction (ΔS) were tested for ΔS = 28.49 and 51.14 J K-1 mol-1 compared to the blind and control samples. The entropy level was experimentally changed, using the quantum system for isothermal entropy reduction. This system is based on quantum bound entanglement of phonons and the phenomenon of phonon resonance (interference of phonon modes) in condensed matter (Silicon dioxide (SiO2) and single crystals of Silicon (Si0), Aluminum (Al0) plates ("chips"), glass, and water). All studied organisms were of the same age (1 day). Mortality was observed daily until the natural death of the organisms. The investigations showed that changes in the Boltzmann-Gibbs entropy affected the survival and body mass of the fruit flies. On the one hand, the reduction in entropy under isothermal conditions in the aquatic environment for ΔS = 28.49 J K-1 mol-1 resulted in an extension of the lifespan and an increase in the body mass of female fruit flies. On the other hand, the almost twofold reduction in this entropy for ΔS = 51.14 J K-1 mol-1 shortened the lives of the males. Thus, the lifespan and body mass of flies turned out to be a specific reaction of metabolism related to changes in the entropy of the aquatic environment.

Influence of Water Polarization Caused by Phonon Resonance on Catalytic Activity of Enolase

Enolase is a conservative protein. Its cellular enzymatic activity catalyzes the conversion of 2-phospho-d-glycerate (2-PGA) to a phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) product in the glycolysis pathway. This enzyme also has a multifunctional nature participating in several biological processes. This work aims to determine the effect of water polarization on the catalytic activity of enolase. The experiments have been set based on the concept that water, a polar dielectric, may undergo the phenomenon of electric polarization, decreasing its configurational and vibrational entropy. Prior to the reaction, the 2-PGA substrate was incubated for 5 h in the glass cuvette with an attached chip-inductor. The latter device was designed to transfer quantum information about a given quantum state from the quantum state generator to water by a phonon resonance. Then, such substrate samples preincubated with the chip-inductor were removed every hour in a separate quartz cuvette with the enzyme to determine its catalytic activity. The influence of the chip-inductor on the preincubated substrate resulted in an increase in the catalytic activity of enolase by 30% compared to the control substrate, not preincubated with the chip-inductor. This suggests that the catalytic activity of the enzyme is augmented when the substrate was primed by chip-inductors. In another kind of experiment, wherein enolase was exposed to methylglyoxal modification, the catalytic activity of the enzyme dropped to 71.7%, while the same enzyme glycated with methylglyoxal primed by chip-inductors restored its activity by 8.4%. This shows the protective effect of chip-inductors on enolase activity despite the harmful effect of methylglyoxal on the protein.

Extreme Fermi Surface Smearing in a Maximally Disordered Concentrated Solid Solution

We show that the Fermi surface can survive the presence of extreme compositional disorder in the equiatomic alloy Ni_{0.25}Fe_{0.25}Co_{0.25}Cr_{0.25}. Our high-resolution Compton scattering experiments reveal a Fermi surface which is smeared across a significant fraction of the Brillouin zone (up to 40% of 2π/a). The extent of this smearing and its variation on and between different sheets of the Fermi surface have been determined, and estimates of the electron mean free path and residual resistivity have been made by connecting this smearing with the coherence length of the quasiparticle states.

Search for unconventional superconductors among the YTE 2Si2 compounds (TE = Cr, Co, Ni, Rh, Pd, Pt)

Motivated by the recent discovery of exotic superconductivity in YFe₂Ge₂ we undertook reinvestigation of formation and physical properties of yttrium-based 1:2:2 silicides. Here we report on syntheses and crystal structures of the YTE ₂Si₂ compounds with TE  =  Cr, Co, Ni, Rh, Pd and Pt, and their low-temperature physical properties measurements, supplemented by results of fully relativistic full-potential local-orbital minimum basis band structure calculations. We confirm that most of the members of that family crystallize in a tetragonal ThCr₂Si₂-type structure (space group I4/mmm) and have three-dimensional Fermi surface, while only one of them (YPt₂Si₂) forms with a closely-related primitive CaBe₂Ge₂-type unit cell (space group P4/nmm) and possess quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surface sheets. Physical measurements indicated that BCS-like superconductivity is observed only in YPt₂Si₂ (T _c  =  1.54 K) and YPd₂Si₂ (T _c  =  0.43 K), while no superconducting phase transition was found in other systems at least down to 0.35 K. Thermal analysis showed no polymorphism in both superconducting phases. No clear relation between the superconductivity and the crystal structure (and dimensionality of the Fermi surface) was observed.

Magnetic phase transitions and superconductivity in strained FeTe

The influence of hydrostatic pressure and ab-plane strain on the magnetic structure of FeTe is investigated from first principles. The results of calculations reveal a phase transition from antiferromagnetic double-stripe ordering at ambient pressure to ferromagnetic ordering at 2 GPa, or under compressive strain reducing the lattice parameter a by about 3%. In turn, a tensile strain of less than 2% induces the phase transition to antiferromagnetic single-stripe ordering. It corresponds to the superconducting FeTe thin films, thereby confirming that the superconducting state is positively linked to single-stripe antiferromagnetic fluctuations. Both types of transition indicate that the position of Te atoms in the crystal is crucial for the magnetic and superconducting properties of iron chalcogenides.

Special directions in momentum space. II. Hexagonal, tetragonal and trigonal symmetries

This paper is a continuation of a previous one,Special directions in momentum space. I. Cubic symmetries[Kontrym-Sznajd & Samsel-Czekała (2011).J. Appl. Cryst.44, 1246–1254], where new sets of special directions (SDs), having the full symmetry of the Brillouin zone, were proposed for cubic lattices. In the present paper, such directions are derived for structures with unique six-, four- and threefold axes,i.e.hexagonal, tetragonal and trigonal lattices, for both two- and three-dimensional space. The SDs presented here allow for construction, in the whole space, of anisotropic quantities from the knowledge of such quantities along a limited number of SDs. The task at hand is to determine as many anisotropic components as the number of available sampling directions. Also discussed is a way of dealing with data when the number of anisotropic components is restricted by a non-optimal set of SDs.

Special directions in momentum space. I. Cubic symmetries

Some new sets of special directions (SDs) in the Brillouin zone for cubic structures are presented. They allow for construction in the reciprocal space of anisotropic quantities, having Γ1symmetry, from knowledge of such quantities along a limited number of SDs. These SDs also define which spectra, measured, for example, in Compton scattering experiments, are the most efficient for reconstructing three-dimensional densities from their one-dimensional projections. The new SDs are compared with results obtained by other authors.

The electronic structure of UCoGe by ab initio calculations and XPS experiment

The crystal and electronic structures of the orthorhombic compound UCoGe are presented and discussed. It has been either refined by the x-ray diffraction on a single crystal or computed within the local spin density functional theory, employing the fully relativistic version of the full-potential local-orbital band structure code, respectively. We particularly give our attention to investigating the Fermi surface and de Haas-van Alphen quantities of UCoGe. The calculated electronic density is then examined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Fairly good agreement is achieved between theoretical and experimental XPS results in the paramagnetic state. A small difference in the position (in energy scale) of the U 5f bands is caused by the electron localization effect observed in the experimental XPS. There is also some discrepancy for the Co 3d electron contributions below E(F). The Fermi surface in the non-magnetic state is of a semimetallic type while that in the ferromagnetic state, with the ordered moment of -0.47 μ(B)/f.u. along the c axis, is more metallic, with nesting properties that may favour superconductivity.

Observation of a strongly nested Fermi surface in the shape-memory alloy Ni0.62Al0.38

The Fermi surface topology of the shape-memory alloy Ni0.62Al0.38 has been determined using Compton scattering. A large area of this Fermi surface can be made to nest with other areas by translation through a vector of approximately 0.18[1,1,0](2pi/a), which corresponds to the wave vector associated with martensitic precursor phenomena such as phonon softening and diffuse streaking in electron diffraction patterns. This observation is compelling evidence that these phenomena are driven by the enhanced electron-lattice coupling due to the Fermi surface nesting.
