Abstract
A base-promoted olefin skeletal rearrangement strategy from para-quinone methides (p-QMs) and N-fluoroarenesulfonamides is reported, enabling direct nitrogen insertion of olefins to produce a series of multiarylated (Z)-N-sulfonyl amidines with complete stereoselectivity and generally good yields. Using p-QMs without o-hydroxy substituents gave triarylated N-sulfonyl amidines, whereas tetraarylated N,N'-disulfonyl amidines were synthesized with the existence of o-hydroxy groups.

Abstract
A catalytic site-selective ring deconstruction of cyclobuteno[a]naphthalene-4-ones with alcohols is reported, enabling the direct production of a wide range of unsymmetric 1,1-diarylated olefins with good yields and complete regioselectivity. The late-stage application of these resulting terminal olefins demonstrates great possibilities to apply this strategy to complex molecules. The protocol features good functional group compatibility, broad substrate scope, and controllable site selectivity.

Abstract
A base-promoted formal (2+1) cycloaddition of benzofuran-derived oxadienes with bromomalonates was established, which afforded benzofuranone-based spirocyclopropanes in generally good yields (up to 98% yield) and high diastereoselectivities (up to 91:9 dr). This reaction represents the first highly diastereoselective formal (2+1) cycloaddition of benzofuran-derived oxadienes, which will contribute to the chemistry of benzofuran-derived oxadienes. In addition, this approach provides an atom-economic and useful protocol for constructing benzofuranone-based spiro skeletons.

Abstract
Catalytic asymmetric [2 + 4] cycloadditions of 3-vinylindoles with ortho-quinone methides and their precursors were carried out in the presence of chiral phosphoric acid to afford a series of indole-containing chroman derivatives with structural diversity in overall high yields (up to 98%), good diastereoselectivities (up to 93:7 dr) and moderate to excellent enantioselectivities (up to 98% ee). This approach not only enriches the chemistry of catalytic asymmetric cycloadditions involving 3-vinylindoles but is also useful for synthesizing chiral chroman derivatives.

Abstract
A diastereo- and enantioselective construction of biologically important chiral 1,3-dioxolochroman frameworks has been established via chiral phosphoric acid (CPA)-catalyzed asymmetric [4+2] cycloaddition of ortho-quinone methides with 3-methyl-2-vinylindoles. By using this approach, a series of indole-based chiral 1,3-dioxolochromans were synthesized with structural diversity in generally good yields, excellent diastereoselectivities and high enantioselectivities (up to 98% yields, >95:5 dr, 97% ee). The evaluation on the cytotoxic activity of some selected products indicated that this class of chiral 1,3-dioxolochroman derivatives had some extent of anti-cancer activity. This reaction not only provides an efficient synthetic method for accessing chiral 1,3-dioxolochroman derivatives with structural diversity and optical purity but also will enrich the research contents of catalytic asymmetric [4+2] cycloadditions involving ortho-quinone methides. In addition, the bioassay of these compounds will cast a light on discovering useful bioactivities of chiral 1,3-dioxolochroman derivatives, which will be helpful for finding lead compounds.

Abstract
An efficient approach for the synthesis of chromene derivatives from vinyl o-quinone methides was established via a Brønsted acid catalyzed electrocyclization. By using this methodology, a series of structurally diversified chromenes was synthesized in a highly atom-economic and environmentally benign manner with generally good to excellent yields (up to 98% yield). This reaction will not only provide an efficient method for the construction of chromene scaffolds, but also enrich the research area of o-quinone methides.

Abstract
Highly selective four-component domino multicyclizations for the synthesis of new fused acridines and azaheterocyclic skeletons have been established by mixing common reactants in isobutyric acid under microwave irradiation. The reactions proceeded at fast rates and were conducted to completion within 20-30 min. Up to seven new chemical bonds, four rings, and four stereocenters were assembled in a convenient one-pot operation. The resulting hexacyclic and pentacyclic fused acridines and their stereochemistry have been fully characterized and determined by X-ray structural analysis.

Abstract
New three-component domino reaction providing divergent approaches to multifunctionalized fused pyrroles with different substituted patterns have been established (40 examples). The direct C(sp(3))-N bond formation was achieved through intermolecular allylic amination in a one-pot operation, and N-arylation of amines was realized by varying N-amino acid enaminones. The reaction is easy to perform simply by mixing three common reactants in acetic acid under microwave heating. The reaction proceeds at fast rates and can be finished within 30 min, which makes workup convenient to give good chemical yields.

Abstract
Over the past two decades, there has been a growing interest in developing predictive models of animal movement and force generation in fluids. In a departure from past studies that have asked how prescribed motions of a propulsor (wing or fin) generate lift and thrust during swimming and flying, we are increasingly interested in predicting the propulsor's movement as well as the forces generated by it. This interest, motivated by a need to understand the control and dynamics of locomotion and its applications to robotics and animal physiology, requires that we develop integrative models and analyses of swimming and flying that incorporate neural control and muscle physiology into more traditional biomechanical studies of locomotion in fluids. This approach extends from whole-animal studies to the molecular basis of force generation. In this paper, we explore mechanical tuning from the level of the whole animal to the proteins driving force generation in muscle.

Abstract
The combined effect of arachidonic acid and cAMP on glucose transport was examined in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. In cells pre-treated with arachidonic acid and increasing concentrations of 8-bromo cAMP for 8 h, although either agent alone enhanced glucose uptake, the simultaneous presence of both agents dramatically increased 2-deoxyglucose uptake in a synergistic fashion. Insulin-stimulated glucose transport, on the other hand, was only slightly affected. The synergistic effect of these two agents was abolished in the presence of cycloheximide. Immunoblot analysis revealed that the contents of ubiquitous glucose transporter (GLUT1) in total cellular and plasma membranes were similarly augmented in cells pre-treated with both arachidonic acid and 8-bromo cAMP, to a greater extent than the additive effect of each agent alone. The content of GLUT4, on the other hand, was not altered under the same experimental conditions. In cells pre-treated with 4beta-phorbol 12beta-myristate 13alpha-acetate (PMA) for 24 h to down-regulate protein kinase C (PKC), the subsequent synergistic effect of arachidonic acid and 8-bromo cAMP was greatly inhibited. In addition, pre-treatment with both PMA and 8-bromo cAMP enhanced glucose transport in a similarly synergistic fashion. Thus the present study seems to indicate that arachidonic acid may act with cAMP in a synergistic way to increase glucose transport by a PKC-dependent mechanism. The increased activity may be accounted for by increased GLUT1 synthesis.

Abstract
We used a combination of high speed video and electrophysiological recordings to investigate the relationship between wing kinematics and the firing patterns of the first (b1) and second (b2) basalar muscles of tethered flying blowflies (Calliphora vicina). The b1 typically fires once during every wing stroke near the time of the dorsal stroke reversal. The b2 fires either intermittenly or in bursts that may be elicited by a visual turning stimulus. Sustained activation of the b1 at rates near wing beat frequency appears necessary for tonic maintenance of stroke amplitude. In addition, advances in the phase of b1 activation were correlated with both increased wing protraction during the down-stroke and increased stroke amplitude. Similar kinematic alterations was correlated with b2 spikes, and consequently, both muscles may function in the control of turns toward the contralateral side. The effects of the two muscles were evident within a single stroke period and decayed quickly. Kinematic changes correlated with b1 phase shifts were graded, suggesting a role in compensatory course stabilization. In contrast, b2 spikes were correlated with all-or-none changes in the wing stroke, a characteristic consistent with a role in mediating rapid turns towards or away from objects.

Abstract
Exposure of adipocytes to arachidonic acid rapidly enhanced basal 2-deoxyglucose uptake, reaching maximal effect at approximately 8 hr. Insulin-stimulated 2-deoxyglucose uptake was not altered over the experimental period. While the short-term (2-h exposure) effect of arachidonic acid was negligibly influenced by cycloheximide, the enhancement of glucose transport by long-term (8-h) exposure to arachidonic acid was markedly decreased by the simultaneous presence of protein-synthesis inhibitors, implying that the short-term and long-term effects of arachidonic acid may involve distinct mechanisms. Immunoblot analysis revealed that 8-h but not 2-h exposure to arachidonic acid increased the content of the ubiquitous glucose transporter (GLUT1) in both total cellular and plasma membranes. The insulin-responsive glucose transporter (GLUT4), on the other hand, was not affected. Following 2-h exposure to arachidonic acid, kinetic studies indicated that the apparent Vmax of basal 2-deoxyglucose uptake was more than doubled, while the apparent Km for 2-deoxyglucose remained unchanged. Protein kinase C (PKC) depletion by pretreating cells with 4 beta-phorbol 12 beta-myristate 13 alpha-acetate (PMA) for 24 h had little influence on the subsequent enhancing effect of arachidonic acid on 2-deoxyglucose uptake. In addition, PMA was able to stimulate 2-deoxyglucose uptake in arachidonic-acid-pretreated cells with similar increments as in non-treated cells. Thus, our data seem to suggest that arachidonic acid may enhance the intrinsic activity of GLUT1 by a PKC-independent mechanism.

Abstract
A 24 h intravenous dosing regimen of amiodarone was designed to reach a peak plasma concentration at 1 h and to maintain the concentration above a certain level during the infusion period. A randomized, open-label, digoxin-controlled study was undertaken to observe the efficacy and safety of the dosing regimen of amiodarone in treating recent-onset, persistent, atrial fibrillation and flutter with ventricular rates above 130 beats.min-1. Fifty patients with a mean age of 70 +/- 7 (SD) years were enrolled and randomly assigned to receive either amiodarone intravenously (n = 26) or digoxin (n = 24). Amiodarone HCl was infused over 24 h according to the following regimen: 5 mg.min-1, 3 mg.min-1, 1 mg.min-1 and 0.5 mg.min-1 for 1, 3, 6 and 14 h, respectively, for a 70-kg subject. Digoxin (0.013 mg.kg-1) was infused in three divided doses, each dose 2 h apart and infused over 30 min. The mean heart rates in the amiodarone group decreased significantly from 157 +/- 20 beats.min-1 to 122 +/- 25 beats.min-1 after 1 h (P < 0.05 vs baseline), and then decreased further to stabilize at 96 +/- 25 beats.min-1 after 6 h (P < 0.05). The digoxin group had fewer dramatic alterations in heart rates, compared to the amiodarone group, in the first 8 h (P < 0.05, respectively). Maximum reduction was reached only after 8 h. The amiodarone infusion was prematurely aborted in two patients due to severe bradycardia and death after conversion in one patient and aggravation of heart failure in the other.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
To examine the effects of variation in body form on the mechanics of terrestrial locomotion, we used a miniature force platform to measure the ground reaction forces of the smallest and, relative to its mass, one of the fastest invertebrates ever studied, the American cockroach Periplaneta americana (mass = 0.83 g). From 0.44-1.0 ms-1, P. americana used an alternating tripod stepping pattern. Fluctuations in gravitational potential energy and horizontal kinetic energy of the center of mass were nearly in phase, characteristic of a running or bouncing gait. Aerial phases were observed as vertical ground reaction force approached zero at speeds above 1 ms-1. At the highest speeds (1.0-1.5 ms-1 or 50 body lengths per second), P. americana switched to quadrupedal and bipedal running. Stride frequency approached the wing beat frequencies used during flight (27 Hz). High speeds were attained by increasing stride length, whereas stride frequency showed little increase with speed. The mechanical power used to accelerate the center of mass increased curvilinearly with speed. The mass-specific mechanical energy used to move the center of mass a given distance was similar to that measured for animals five orders of magnitude larger in mass, but was only one-hundredth of the metabolic cost.

Endothelin also caused a dose-dependent decrease in tissue levels of cAMP. Concentrations of cAMP decreased about 60% 1 min after endothelin (10(-8) M) administration, but returned to basal levels in 5 min. By contrast, tissue levels of cGMP were not changed by endothelin. Modulation of cAMP production may provide one mechanism for the vascular action of endothelin.

Abstract
Endothelin is a vasoconstrictor peptide which has recently been isolated and sequenced from the vascular endothelial cells. It was reported to increase blood pressure in vivo and produce a prolonged contraction with a slow onset in vitro. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether endothelin can lower the portal pressure as another endogenous vasoconstriction peptidevasopressin (AVP) can. Heart rate, systemic blood pressure, portal pressure, and portal vein blood flow were measured. Effects of endothelin on these parameters were compared with those of AVP. Endothelin 10(-10) mol/Kg significantly decreased all of the parameters mentioned. At the higher dose (5 x 10(-10) mol/Kg), however, the portal pressure and blood pressure were increased and portal vein blood flow was unchanged. On the other hand, AVP decreased the portal pressure and portal vein blood flow but elevated the systemic blood pressure. In vitro experiments revealed that endothelin contracted both tail artery and portal vein of rat and vasopressin contracted only tail artery. We concluded that although both are endogenous vasoconstricting peptides, endothelin and AVP affect differently on arterial and venous vascular beds as well as on portal pressure.

Abstract
Six-legged pedestrians, cockroaches, use a running gait during locomotion. The gait was defined by measuring ground reaction forces and mechanical energy fluctuations of the center of mass in Blaberus discoidalis (Serville) as they travelled over a miniature force platform. These six-legged animals produce horizontal and vertical ground-reaction patterns of force similar to those found in two-, four- and eight-legged runners. Lateral forces were less than half the vertical force fluctuations. At speeds between 0.08 and 0.66 ms-1, horizontal kinetic and gravitational potential energy changes were in phase. This pattern of energy fluctuation characterizes the bouncing gaits used by other animals that run. Blaberus discoidalis attained a maximum sustainable stride frequency of 13 Hz at 0.35 ms-1, the same speed and frequency predicted for a mammal of the same mass. Despite differences in body form, the mass-specific energy used to move the center of mass a given distance (0.9 J kg-1m-1) was the same for cockroaches, ghost crabs, mammals, and birds. Similarities in force production, stride frequency and mechanical energy production during locomotion suggest that there may be common design constraints in terrestrial locomotion which scale with body mass and are relatively independent of body form, leg number and skeletal type.
