Application of co-composted biochar significantly improved plant-growth relevant physical/chemical properties of a metal contaminated soil

A woody-biochar was added to waste biomass during a composting process. The resulting compost-char was amended to a metal contaminated soil and two plant species, L. perenne and E. sativa, were grown in a pot experiment to determine 1) plant survival and stress factors, 2) uptake of metals to plants and, 3) chemical characteristics of sampled soils and pore waters. Compost supplemented with biochar after the composting process were also tested, as well as a commercially available compost, for comparison. Co-composting with biochar hastened the composting process, resulting in a composite material of reduced odour, increased maturity, circum-neutral pH and increased moisture retention than compost (increase by 3% of easily removable water content). When amended to the soil, CaCl₂ extractable and pore water metals s were reduced by all compost treatments with little influence of biochar addition at any tested dose. Plant growth success was promoted furthest by the addition of co-composted biochar to the test soil, especially in the case of E. sativa. For both tested plant species significant reductions in plant metal concentrations (e.g. 8-times for Zn) were achieved, against the control soil, by compost, regardless of biochar addition. The results of this study demonstrate that the addition of biochar into the composting process can hasten the stability of the resulting compost-char, with more favourable characteristics as a soil amendment/improver than compost alone. This appears achievable whilst also maintaining the provision of available nutrients to soils and the reduction of metal mobility, and improved conditions for plant establishment.

Seasonal fluctuations of Zn, Pb, As and Cd contents in the biomass of selected grass species growing on contaminated soils: Implications for in situ phytostabilization

Phytostabilization aims to immobilize contaminants at the rhizosphere level using the root system of adapted plants. In order to exploit wild grasses with potential for phytostabilization, a screening throughout the year was conducted at a site contaminated by Pb and Zn. Three plant species were chosen: Agrostis capillaris, Arrhenatherum elatius and Calamagrostis epigeios. Rhizospheric soil and biomass was used for chemical characterization. Above- and below-ground was analyzed. For each sample, arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi colonization was determined. The highest concentrations of Pb were found in the A. capillaris rhizosphere (3417 mg kg^-1), and in A. elatius for Zn (3876 mg kg^-1). CaCl₂-extractable Zn in the rhizosphere of C. epigeios was the lowest and Pb was lower for A. elatius. CaCl₂-extractable Cd was neither species-dependent nor time-dependent. Arsenic was not species-dependent. The fractionation of target elements did not show differences between separate sampling campaigns and Pb was the only element that showed differences during the year. A. capillaris showed the best capacity to take up elements. The colonization by AMF did not show significant differences for different sampling times, or interactions between time and species, however differences were found for different species, i.e., C. epigeios showed significantly lower colonization by arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi. Our results indicate that A. capillaris appears to be a good indigenous candidate for phytostabilization.

The Impact of Soil-Applied Biochars From Different Vegetal Feedstocks on Durum Wheat Plant Performance and Rhizospheric Bacterial Microbiota in Low Metal-Contaminated Soil

Biochar shapes the soil environment and plant growth. Nevertheless, the mechanisms associated with an improved plant biomass and soil microbiome in low metal-contaminated soils are still unclear. In this study, the influence of biochar on soil physico-chemical properties, plant performance, and rhizosphere microbiota in durum wheat was investigated at the above- and belowground levels. Two kinds of biochar from different feedstocks (wood chips and wheat straw pellets) and two Italian durum wheat varieties, Duilio and Marco Aurelio, were analyzed in a greenhouse using a low-nutrient gleyic fluvisol containing a very small amount of Pb and Zn. Four different treatments were performed: soil-only control (C), soil amended with woody biochar equilibrated with nutrient solution (B1+) and non-activated (B1−), and soil amended with non-activated (B2−) wheat straw biochar. Seven weeks after seed germination, (1) the physico-chemical properties of soil, biochars, and mixtures were assessed; (2) the fresh and dry weight of aboveground plant tissues and roots and other morphometric traits were measured; and (3) metabarcoding of the 16S rRNA bacterial gene was performed on rhizosphere soil samples. The results showed that the biochar from wheat straw had stronger impact on both durum varieties, with higher electrical conductivity, higher levels of available K and Na, and a substantial increase of dissolved Na+, K+, and Cl− ions in pore water. Generally, biochar amendment decreased Zn availability for the plants. In addition, biochar improved plant growth in the early growth stage, and the more positive effect was achieved by combining wheat straw biochar with Marco Aurelio. Rhizosphere bacterial microbiota showed variation in alpha diversity only due to treatment; on the other hand, the differential analysis showed consistent variation among samples with significant effects on amplicon sequence variant (ASV) abundance due to the specific biochar treatment as well as the genotype. The pure B1−, due to its scarce nutrient content with respect to the richer types (B1+ and B2−), had a negative impact on microbiota richness. Our study highlights that an appropriate combination of biochar feedstock and crop species may lead to superior yield.

An extremely rare case of an oversized accessory spleen: case report and review of the literature

Background

The accessory spleen is a congenital defect characterized by a separated ectopic splenic parenchyma. The size is rarely more than 4 cm. The preoperative diagnosis is prohibitive preoperatively. The aims of the present manuscript were to present the case of a patient with a rare oversize accessory spleen and a review of the literature.

Case presentation

A 15-year-old boy was admitted to the emergency department following blunt abdominal trauma.

The computed tomographic scan showed a traumatic rupture of the spleen and a 7-cm mass at the left side of the retroperitoneal space. Conservative treatment started and aborted after 4 h due to the onset of haemodynamic instability. Splenectomy was performed. An accessory spleen was discovered. A second large mass in the retroperitoneum was diagnosed as a second large accessory spleen that was also left in place. The postoperative course was uneventful, and the patient was discharged on the 7th postoperative day. Seven months later, the CT scan showed viability of both accessory spleens.

Conclusion

An accessory spleen can be variously located and the retroperitoneal position is extremely uncommon. Preoperative diagnosis is still difficult, especially in emergency and as in our case, the literature shows the difficulty of reaching a diagnosis before surgery. The main misdiagnosis is neoplastic disease and for this reason accessory spleen can be wrongly removed.

An undiagnosed pre or intra operative retroperitoneal mass, closely to the spleen, have to be managed carefully. The diagnosis of accessory spleen needs to be ever considered as if found, represents a great possibility to conduct a normal life after splenectomy (of main spleen) for trauma.

Open conversion for laparoscopically difficult cholecystectomy is still a valid solution with unsolved aspects

The difficult laparoscopic cholecystectomy remains a surgical challenge for surgeons who must decide between laparoscopic continuation and open conversion. The balance between the lack of open surgery training of young surgeons and the risk of maintaining the laparoscopic approach in difficult laparoscopic cholecystectomy is still an unresolved problem. Furthermore, the time that must be spent in an attempt to complete laparoscopic surgery before conversion is still controversial. The authors in this letter discuss about these and other questions that still require an answer.

Nano Zero-Valent Iron Mediated Metal(loid) Uptake and Translocation by Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Symbioses

Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) has great potential in the remediation of metal(loid)-contaminated soils, but its efficiency in metal(loid) stabilization in the plant-microbe continuum is unclear. This study investigated nZVI-mediated metal(loid) behavior in the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal-maize ( Zea mays L.) plant association. Plants with AM fungal inoculation were grown in metal(loid)- (mainly Zn and Pb) contaminated soils (Litavka River, Czech Republic) amended with/without 0.5% (w/w) nZVI. The results showed that nZVI decreased plant metal(loid) uptake but inhibited AM development and its function in metal(loid) stabilization in the rhizosphere. AM fungal inoculation alleviated the physiological stresses caused by nZVI and restrained nZVI efficiency in reducing plant metal(loid) uptake. Micro proton-induced X-ray emission (μ-PIXE) analysis revealed the sequestration of Zn (possibly through binding to thiols) by fungal structures in the roots and the precipitation of Pb and Cu in the mycorrhizal root rhizodermis (possibly by Fe compounds originated from nZVI). XRD analyses further indicated that Pb/Fe mineral transformations in the rhizosphere were influenced by AM and nZVI treatments. The study revealed the counteractive effects of AM and nZVI on plant metal(loid) uptake and uncovered details of metal(loid) behavior in the AM fungal-root-nZVI system, calling into question about nZVI implementation in mycorrhizospheric systems.

A new modified Mayo technique: should the surgeons need a new open technique for hernia repair in their armamentarium?

INTRODUCTION

The Mayo technique is one of the most common techniques used to repair incisional, umbilical, and epigastric hernias. A high percentage of recurrences, together with the use of particular expensive types of meshes, are some of the most relevant problems in this surgical field.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

This study is a clinical prospective observational and involves all the patients who underwent procedures using a new modified Mayo technique from 2006 through 2013. The general criteria analyzed were age, sex, obesity, smoke abuse, diabetes, chronic diseases, type of hernia, operative time, morbidity and mortality. All the patients involved in this study were followed-up from 6 to 120 months.

RESULTS

The types of hernia were 5 epigastic hernia (20,8%), 8 umbilical hernia (33,3%), 11 midline incision hernia (45,9%). Ten patients (41,7%) presented non-complicated hernias; 8 patients (33,3%) presented strangulated hernias and 6 patients (25,0%) presented obstructed hernias. No intestinal resection was necessary in any of the patients. The mean operative time was 55 minutes (range 30-180). The mean hospital stay of the patients' after-post operative procedure was 4.5 days (range, 2 to 8 days). No major complications have been reported. Only one patient present a recurrence.

CONCLUSION

These preliminary results suggest that this modified Mayo technique could be useful in the armamentarium of surgeon to repair incisional, umbilical, and epigastric hernias. More studies are needed to validate the technique.
