Abstract
During the Upper Paleolithic, lions become an important theme in Paleolithic art and are more frequent in anthropogenic faunal assemblages. However, the relationship between hominins and lions in earlier periods is poorly known and primarily interpreted as interspecies competition. Here we present new evidence for Neanderthal-cave lion interactions during the Middle Paleolithic. We report new evidence of hunting lesions on the 48,000 old cave lion skeleton found at Siegsdorf (Germany) that attest to the earliest direct instance of a large predator kill in human history. A comparative analysis of a partial puncture to a rib suggests that the fatal stab was delivered with a wooden thrusting spear. We also present the discovery of distal lion phalanges at least 190,000 old from Einhornhöhle (Germany), representing the earliest example of the use of cave lion skin by Neanderthals in Central Europe. Our study provides novel evidence on a new dimension of Neanderthal behavioral complexity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Effective emotional regulation is recognized as essential to a good mental health of people with chronic diseases, and Mind-body and Art Therapies (MBATs) could have a positive effect on emotional regulation skills in this population. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the effect of MBATs on emotional regulation as measured by the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) questionnaire. METHODS A convergent mixed approach nested in a pragmatic superiority two arms parallel randomized controlled trial was conducted. French speaking adults with one or more chronic somatic illnesses and not suffering from a chronic psychiatric disorder unrelated to one of their chronic somatic illness were included. At inclusion, non-directive interviews were conducted, followed by an initial DERS assessment. The same combination of evaluation was implemented after 6 months of activity (T1). After inclusion, each participant was randomized within either the intervention group (G1) or the control group (G2) following a controlled wait-list design by use of a pregenerated randomization list. Staff and patient were blinded to this list until the initial evaluation was completed, after which the trial was conducted in an open-label fashion. Participants chose 2 mediations: one creativity-focused (art-therapy, writing workshop, theatre of life, vocal workshop) and one mind-body-focused (mindfulness meditation, Pilates, shiatsu, ayurvedic massages). G1 started their mediations immediately after inclusion, while G2 started 6 months later. Primary outcome was the change in means at 6 months in the overall DERS score compared between each group. Non-directive interviews were carried out at the inclusion and after 6 months of MBATs. A continuous inductive analysis was carried out on gathered material in G1 to explore the participants' experiences regarding their disease and their perceived changes associated to the intervention. RESULTS A total of 150 patients was randomized (75 per groups) at the end of the study. At T1, 133 patients filled out the final questionnaire (67 in G1 vs 66 in G2) and 112 interviews were analysed (54 in G1 vs 58 in G2). All 150 patients were analysed (intention to treat) using a multiple imputation approach. The mean DERS score at T0 was equal to 82.8 ± 21.1 and 85.0 ± 20.2 in G1 and G2 respectively. On average, at T1, the score decreased in the G1 (Δ = -4.8, SD = 21.3) and in G2 (Δ = -0.11, SD = 17.8). The difference in decrease, however, was not statistically significant (p = 0.13). Qualitative analysis underlined some MBATs benefits on emotional regulation, especially on regulation strategies. No harms related to the intervention has been observed. CONCLUSIONS This study only partially supports benefits on MBAT on emotional regulation skills enhancement in patients with chronic disease receiving MBATs, as measured by the DERS scale. Abstract
Multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) are genetic predisposition syndromes to endocrine tumors including MEN1, MEN2 and exceptionally MEN4. MEN are transmitted in an autosomal dominant fashion with a high penetrance. Classically, there is no genotype/phenotype correlation for NEM1 whereas this is the case for NEM2. Patients with NEM1, linked to an inactivating mutation of the menin gene, may present with: primary hyperparathyroidism, pituitary adenoma, duodeno-pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), bronchial tumors with an increased risk of thymoma, adrenal cortical tumors, an increased risk of breast cancer and characteristic skin involvement such as collagenomas, lentiginomas and an increased risk of skin cancer. These patients require at least annual follow-up. Screening of children is proposed from the age of 5 years. Patients with NEM2, linked to an activating mutation of the RET proto-oncogene, all present with medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) at a variable age depending on the genotype. Some patients present a pheochromocytoma (50 %) and hyperparathyroidism (20 %). Pediatric forms with aggressive CMT, ganglioneuromatosis and marfanoid syndrome exist (rare NEM2B). Some mutations are associated with a risk of aggressive CMT, justifying prophylactic thyroidectomy before 6 months of age. The age of genetic testing depends on the mutation subtype in the NEM2 parent. NEM4, related to a mutation in the CDKN1B gene, are rare, with a less well-known pathogenesis and their follow-up is not well codified.

Abstract
Objectifs : Cette étude rétrospective et transversale vise à comprendre l’expérience à long terme des parents endeuillés en oncologie pédiatrique et les différences du deuil parental en fonction du genre.
Matériel et méthodes : Un questionnaire multisectionnel coconstruit avec des cliniciens et intervenants en suivi de deuil a été tenu en ligne en 2018 et 2019. Les participants au sondage étaient des parents dont l’enfant était décédé au service d’hématologie-oncologie du CHU Sainte-Justine 2 à 18 ans auparavant. Des sections spécifiques sur les réactions, les changements et les souvenirs ont fait l’objet d’analyses descriptives.
Résultats : Les réponses de 48 parents ont été analysées. Les résultats indiquent que les mères ont tendance à modifier certaines de leurs activités sociales, alors que les pères cherchent plutôt à retrouver leurs habitudes. Les réactions initialement fortes des parents s’atténuent au fil du temps sans disparaître, en particulier la tristesse et les troubles du sommeil. Les parents ont des souvenirs apaisants des interactions et des soins reçus des intervenants en milieux clinique et communautaire même plusieurs années après le décès de leur enfant.
Conclusion : L’offre de soutien psychosocial communautaire et professionnel à long terme est pertinente, de même aux besoins des couples et aux besoins individuels des parents en fonction du genre.

Abstract
Les enfants atteints d’un cancer sont régulièrement confrontés à des procédures douloureuses au cours de leur prise en charge. Afin de les accompagner au mieux dans leurs soins, des techniques de communication dérivées de l’hypnose ont montré d’excellents niveaux d’efficacité sur la réduction de la détresse et de la douleur associées à ces procédures. Nous avons mené une étude préliminaire évaluant les effets d’une formation à la communication hypnotique sur la pratique des infirmières lors de procédures douloureuses auprès d’enfants atteints d’un cancer. Les résultats ont montré une bonne acquisition des techniques par les infirmières et des effets importants de ces techniques sur les niveaux de douleurs et de détresse des enfants. Cette étude a aussi permis de récolter des recommandations d’amélioration de la formation pour développer un design plus simple de la formation Rel@x, qui sera testée auprès d’un échantillon d’infirmières et de patients plus important.

Abstract
Introduction Kidney transplant recipients and patients on hemodialysis are immunocompromised populations, prioritized for COVID 19 vaccination, but excluded from vaccine trials. Data are lacking regarding humoral response to COVID vaccination in immunocompromised patients. Description We investigated early serological response after COVID 19 vaccination with Pfizer/BioNTech (BNT162b2) mRNA vaccine in groups of patients undergoing hemodialysis (n = 78), kidney transplant recipients (n = 74), and in healthy controls. Antibody titers against SARS-CoV-2 at days 0, 14, 28, 36 and 58 after the first injection were measured. Methods Antibody titers against SARS-CoV-2 at days 0, 14, 28, 36 and 58 after the first injection were measured. Results A total of 74 transplant recipients (mean age 64.8 ± 11.5 years, 38.9% women), 78 hemodialysis patients (mean age 73.5 ± 12.8 years, 40.2% women) and 7 healthy controls (mean age 51.6 ± 6.8, 42% women) were included. In controls, antibodies were detected at a significant level (> 13 AU/ml) at day 14 post-injection, and increased progressively, to peak at day 36 (median 1372 AU/mL [IQR 490.2-4540.5]). Patients undergoing hemodialysis had lower titers that peaked at day 58 (median 4.0 AU/mL [IQR: 1.85-12.2] at day 14; 6.6 AU/mL [IQR 2.1-19.0] at day 36; 276 AU/mL [IQR 83.4-526.0] at day 58). A significant antibody level was detected in only 3 kidney transplant recipients at day 36. In hemodialysis patients, age, serum albumin and Kt/V were positively correlated with serological response (P < 0.043 and P < 0.019 respectively); non responders to HBV vaccine had the lowest titers of anti-SARS-CovV-2 antibodies (Fig. 1). Conclusion Our results suggest that the post-vaccine humoral response is strongly inhibited by immunosuppressant therapy in kidney transplant recipients, while it is lowered by the uremic condition in patients undergoing hemodialysis.

Introduction : Some studies suggest a high rate of unknown glycemic abnormalities in coronary patients. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of dysglycemia detected by oral glucose load (OGL) in patients ongoing Cardiac Rehab , and to analyse chronotropic response to exercise before and after Cardiac rehab in dysglycemic patients.
Patients and methods : We included 838 patients, mostly coronary patients after acute coronary syndrome, including 79% men and 375 were diabetics. OGL has been performed in non-diabetics and ergospirometry test performed in all patients before and after rehabilitation.
Results : At OGL, 189 of 463 non-diabetics (41%) had dysglycemia: Diabetes (n = 42 including 17 according to fasting glycemia), Glucose intolerance (GI) (n = 102 including 32 with fasting hyperglycemia (FH), FH isolated (n = 45). We compared 417 patients with known or discovered diabetes, GI and 319 normoglycemic or FH. Diabetics were older and had a higher BMI than GI and normoglycemic-FH (p <0.001). Resting heart rate (HR) was higher and maximal HR on exercise is lower in diabetics than other 2 groups (p <0.001) without significantly differing between GI and normoglycaemia-FH. VO2max was lower in diabetics and GI than normoglycemic-FH s (p <0.001 and 0.01). After cardiac rehabilitation, resting HR is changed little, HR max and VO2max increased in 3 groups but kept the same inter-group differences
Conclusion :This data confirms the high prevalence of unknown dysglycemia and the importance of OGL for their screening, especially in coronary patients. In diabetics, the higher resting HR and the lack of chronotropic reserve probably indicate autonomic dysregulation which partially improves after cardiac rehabilitation.

Abstract
We describe a European Acheulean site characterised by an extensive accumulation of large cutting tools (LCT). This type of Lower Paleolithic assemblage, with dense LCT accumulations, has only been found on the African continent and in the Near East until now. The identification of a site with large accumulations of LCTs favours the hypothesis of an African origin for the Acheulean of Southwest Europe. The lithic tool-bearing deposits date back to 293–205 thousand years ago. Our chronological findings confirm temporal overlap between sites with clear “African” Acheulean affinities and Early Middle Paleolithic sites found elsewhere in the region. These complex technological patterns could be consistent with the potential coexistence of different human species in south-western Europe during the Middle Pleistocene.

Abstract
QBP359 is an IgG1 human monoclonal antibody that binds with high affinity to human CCL21, a chemokine hypothesized to play a role in inflammatory disease conditions through activation of resident CCR7-expressing fibroblasts/myofibroblasts. The pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) of QBP359 in non-human primates were characterized through an integrated approach, combining PK, PD, immunogenicity, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and tissue profiling data from single- and multiple-dose experiments in cynomolgus monkeys. When compared with regular immunoglobulin typical kinetics, faster drug clearance was observed in serum following intravenous administration of 10 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg of QBP359. We have shown by means of PK/PD modeling that clearance of mAb-ligand complex is the most likely explanation for the rapid clearance of QBP359 in cynomolgus monkey. IHC and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry data suggested a high turnover and synthesis rate of CCL21 in tissues. Although lymphoid tissue was expected to accumulate drug due to the high levels of CCL21 present, bioavailability following subcutaneous administration in monkeys was 52%. In human disease states, where CCL21 expression is believed to be expressed at 10-fold higher concentrations compared with cynomolgus monkeys, the PK/PD model of QBP359 and its binding to CCL21 suggested that very large doses requiring frequent administration of mAb would be required to maintain suppression of CCL21 in the clinical setting. This highlights the difficulty in targeting soluble proteins with high synthesis rates.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Determine which risk factors in children with recurrent croup warrant bronchoscopic evaluation. DESIGN Retrospective cohort study. SETTING Tertiary paediatric hospital. PARTICIPANTS Children with recurrent croup who underwent a rigid bronchoscopy between 2001 and 2013. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Bronchoscopy findings, classified as normal, mildly abnormal or significantly abnormal. RESULTS Two hundred and thirty-five children underwent a rigid bronchoscopy and 110 underwent a flexible oesophagoscopy. One hundred and forty-five children (61.7%) had a mildly abnormal exam, and 27 children (11.5%) had significant findings that required a surgical intervention or grade 2 or greater subglottic stenosis. The significantly abnormal group included 4 children with laryngomalacia, 2 with a subglottic cyst, 8 with grade 2 or 3 subglottic stenosis and 13 children who underwent a surgical procedure for subglottic stenosis. Sixty-seven children had a preoperative diagnosis of asthma, 62 were atopic and 78 had symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux. Oesophagoscopy was diagnostic of gastro-oesophageal reflux in 19 of 110 cases, and 106 children (45.1%) had bronchoscopic findings suggestive of GERD. Eight children had eosinophilic oesophagitis. After multivariate analysis, significantly abnormal bronchoscopy was significantly associated with chronic cough (P = 0.02), have a previous intubation (P = 0.002) or be younger than 3 years old (P = 0.01). CONCLUSION Significant findings on bronchoscopy that warranted further surgical intervention were uncommon in this cohort. Nearly half of the patients had evidence of gastro-oesophageal reflux. In patients without risk factors for significant abnormalities, empiric medical management may be beneficial prior to endoscopy.

Abstract
Hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) is currently the only curative therapeutic option for the treatment of thalassemia. In spite of the high cure rate, HSCT can lead to life-threatening adverse events in some patients. Busulfan (Bu) is a key component of the conditioning regimen prior to HSCT. Inter-individual differences in Bu pharmacokinetics (PK) are hypothesized to influence Bu efficacy and toxicity. Since Bu is mainly metabolized by glutathione S-transferase (GST), we investigated the relationship of GSTA1 and GSTM1 genotypes with first-dose PK and HSCT outcomes in 44 children with thalassemia intermedia and thalassemia major. All children received a myeloablative conditioning regimen with IV Bu. Association analysis revealed a relationship between GSTA169C>T (or haplotype *A/*B) and first Bu dose PK that was dependent on sex and Pesaro risk classification (PRC). Among female patients and patients with PRC I-II, homozygous individuals for the GSTA1T-69 allele defining haplotype *B, had higher Bu exposure and lower clearance (P⩽0.01). Association with HSCT outcomes showed that patients with the GSTM1 null genotypes had higher occurrence of regimen-related toxicity (P=0.01). These results suggest that GST genotypes could be useful to tailor the first Bu dose accordingly to improve HSCT outcome.

Abstract
This work deals with the specific studies of three main sources of uncertainty in electron spin resonance (ESR) dosimetry/dating of fossil tooth enamel: (1) the precision of the ESR measurements, (2) the long-term signal fading the selection of the fitting function. They show a different influence on the equivalent dose (D(E)) estimates. Repeated ESR measurements were performed on 17 different samples: results show a mean coefficient of variation of the ESR intensities of 1.20 ± 0.23 %, inducing a mean relative variability of 3.05 ± 2.29 % in the D(E) values. ESR signal fading over 5 y was also observed: its magnitude seems to be quite sample dependant but is nevertheless especially important for the most irradiated aliquots. This fading has an apparent random effect on the D(E) estimates. Finally, the authors provide new insights and recommendations about the fitting of ESR dose-response curves of fossil enamel with a double saturating exponential (DSE) function. The potential of a new variation of the DSE was also explored. Results of this study also show that the choice of the fitting function is of major importance, maybe more than the other sources previously mentioned, in order to get accurate final D(E) values.

Abstract
Cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYPs) and flavin-containing monooxygenases (FMOs) likely have a role in the oxidation of intermediate metabolites of busulfan (Bu). In vitro studies to investigate the involvement of these enzymes are cumbersome because of the volatile nature of the intermediate metabolite tetrahydrothiophene (THT) and the lack of sensitive quantitation methods. This study explored the association between the CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP2B6 and FMO3 genotypes and sulfolane (Su, a water soluble metabolite of Bu) plasma levels in children undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The relationship between these genotypes and the effectiveness of myeloablative conditioning was also analyzed. Sixty-six children receiving an intravenous Bu-based myeloablative conditioning regimen were genotyped for common functional variant alleles in CYP2C9 (*2 and *3), CYP2C19 (*2 and *17), FMO3 (rs2266780, rs2266782 and rs1736557) and CYP2B6 (*5 and *9). The plasma levels of Bu and its metabolite Su were measured after the ninth Bu dose in a subset of 44 patients for whom plasma samples were available. The ratio of Bu to Su was considered the metabolic ratio (MR) and was compared across the genotype groups. Higher MRs were observed in CYP2C9*2 and *3 allele carriers (mean±s.d.: 7.8±3.6 in carriers vs 4.4±2.2 in non-carriers; P=0.003). An increased incidence of graft failure was observed among patients with an MR>5 compared with those with MR values <5 (20% vs 0%; P=0.02). In contrast, a significantly higher incidence of relapse and graft failure (evaluated as event-free survival) was observed in patients with malignant disease who carried CYP2B6 alleles with reduced function on both chromosomes compared with carriers of at least one normal allele (100% vs 40%; P=0.0001). These results suggest that CYP2C9 has a role in the oxidation reactions of THT and indicate that it may be possible to predict the efficacy of Bu-based myeloablative conditioning before HSCT on the basis of CYP genotypes and Bu MRs.

Abstract
RATIONALE Allogeneic hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) is the only curative treatment for sickle cell disease (SCD). Cerebral vasculopathy was the principal indication for transplantation. These children could present impaired neuropsychological development related to different causes, hence the value of exploring their intellectual capacities before and after transplantation. MATERIAL AND METHODS Prospective longitudinal study from 1992 to 2006 in all transplanted SCD patients. The patients were assessed using Wechsler scales with four different indices: verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory, and processing speed (PSI), providing a full-scale intellectual quotient (IQ). RESULTS Fifteen SCD patients (8 females and 7 males; mean age, 8.9 years) were evaluated before and 36 and 60 months after transplantation. All were from Africa and lived in France. All patients except 2 had experienced ischemic stroke before HSCT. The median full-scale IQ was 87, 94, and 94 before transplantation and 36 months and 60 months after HSCT, respectively. DISCUSSION At pre-HSCT evaluation, full-scale IQ was considered as "low average". This relatively poor result could be related to impairment of PSI, which reflects frequent graphic and motor abnormalities related to the previous stroke experienced by almost all patients. At 3 years after HSCT, all indices including IQ had increased. Only the PSI had decreased, this observation being potentially related to previous stroke and to the depression frequently experienced by the transplant recipient patient after the acute phase, when the disease is cured. At 5 years after HSCT, the median full-scale IQ was stable and the PSI had increased. CONCLUSION At the end of follow-up, the patients improved their physical and psychological well-being. This allowed them to build projects for the future and to manifest the desire of becoming an adult. Bone marrow transplantation in this cohort of children with SCD and severe cerebral vasculopathy is associated with improved performance as measured by the Wechsler scale.

Abstract
Some clinical characteristics of cord blood transplantation (CBT) might be explained by specificities in the reconstitution of immune subsets differing by their maturation stage or their implication in GVHD, tolerance or immune responses against tumor or infectious agents. Here, we compare the immune reconstitution of several of these subsets after CBT and BMT. B-cell count recovery was faster after CBT. There was no difference in the recovery of CD4(+) and CD8(+) cell counts. There was no difference either in the frequency of several subsets: CD45RO(+) memory, and CD45RA(+) naïve cells within the CD4(+) T-cell compartment, CD27(+) among B cells, CD56(bright), NKG2A(+), and KIR(+) cells among natural killer (NK) cells, CD25(+)FOXP3(+) regulatory T cells and invariant NKT cells. The proportion of the thymic naïve CD31(+)CD45RA(+)CD4(+) T cells was lower after CBT at 6 months post-transplant, and was still below normal at 1 year in both groups. NK-cell expansion was more sustained after CBT, with fewer double-negative NKG2A(-)KIR(-) hyporesponsive cells and more double-positive NKG2A(+)KIR(+) hyper-responsive NK cells. These results, therefore, indicate that further research to improve CBT outcome should try to improve thymopoieisis and take advantage of the sustained NK-cell reconstitution.

Abstract
Relapsed or refractory neuroblastoma is uniformly fatal. We hypothesized that allogeneic response could provide a platform for immunotherapy in neuroblastoma. We therefore undertook a pilot trial of unrelated cord blood transplantation after reduced intensity conditioning regimen (RIC) in children with relapsed neuroblastoma to assess engraftment and tolerability in this heavily pretreated population. The RIC included CY (50 mg/kg, day -6), fludarabine (40 mg/m(2), days -6 to -2), total body irradiation (200 cGy, day -1), and rabbit anti-thymocyte globulin (2.5 mg/kg, days -3 to -1). Six patients were enrolled: four were in partial responsive relapse, one with a mixed response and one in refractory relapse. All patients tolerated the regimen well and had donor engraftment with full neutrophil and plt recovery (median time 12 and 35 days, respectively). One patient never experienced neutropenia and another did not need plt transfusions. All patients progressed after transplant (median time 55 days, 26-180 days). Natural killer (NK) cell counts were normal within 2 months, whereas T-cell recovery was slower. In conclusion, unrelated cord blood engrafts after RIC in children with refractory neuroblastoma. Future research should be aimed at transplanting patients with minimal residual disease, using less intensive immunosuppression and adding NK-cell based post transplant immunotherapy.

Abstract
Ovarian cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality by gynecological cancer. Despite good response to surgery and initial chemotherapy, essentially based on cisplatin (cis-diamino-dichloro-platinum(II) (CDDP)) compounds, frequent recurrences with chemoresistance acquisition are responsible for poor prognosis. Several mechanisms have been described as implicated in CDDP resistance, however they are not sufficient to exhaustively account for this resistance emergence. We applied a proteomic approach based on 2-DE coupled with MS (MALDI-TOF/TOF) to identify proteins associated with chemoresistance induced by CDDP. A kinetic analysis of IGROV1 cell behavior following treatment with CDDP and subsequent statistical analysis revealed time and/or concentration-dependent modifications in protein expression. We evidenced events such as decreased amino-acid and nucleotide synthesis potentially associated with cell cycle blockade, and variations that may be related to resistance acquisition, such as possible enhanced glycolysis and increased proliferating potential. Moreover, overexpressions of aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 and both cytokeratins 8 and 18 were consistent with our previous findings, demonstrating that expression of these proteins was increased in cisplatin-resistant IGROV1-R10 as compared to IGROV1 parental cells. Identification of such proteins could allow improved understanding of the mechanisms leading to cell death or survival and, thus, to the acquisition of chemoresistance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Emergence of chemoresistance in the course of treatments with platinum drugs remains a major hurdle to ovarian carcinoma therapy. We have previously shown that acquisition of cisplatin resistance by OAW42-R ovarian carcinoma cells was associated with the loss of ERK activation in response to cisplatin. To try to sensitize this cell line by restoring ERK activation, we tested a new synthetic compound, 2[[3-(2,3-dichlorophenoxy)propyl]amino]ethanol (2,3-DCPE), which was described to induce ERK activation and to display anticancer properties. METHODS We treated four ovarian carcinoma cell lines with 2,3-DCPE, alone or combined with cisplatin. We characterized its effects on apoptosis induction and proliferation and correlated them with molecular modulations. RESULTS We showed that 2,3-DCPE induced cell death and ERK phosphorylation in a time- and concentration-dependent manner in OAW42-R cells. 2,3-DCPE-triggered apoptosis was also associated with the inhibition of Bcl-2 expression and, to a less extent, with that of Bcl-xL. Treatment with 2,3-DCPE also elicited a strong G0/G1 cell cycle arrest, accompanied with p21WAF1/CIP1 up-regulation. All of these effects revealed to be irreversible. Moreover, 2,3-DCPE exerted a cytostatic effect on OAW42, IGROV1-R10 and SKOV3 ovarian carcinoma cells, the sensitivity to 2,3-DCPE appearing in particular linked with a low basal level of P-ERK. Finally, we showed that 2,3-DCPE increased the cytotoxic effect of cisplatin in OAW42-R resistant cells. CONCLUSION Our results emphasized the potential interest of 2,3-DCPE, used alone or combined with cisplatin, for ovarian carcinoma treatment. The absence of basal P-ERK may constitute a predictive marker of response to this novel therapy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION While guidelines for detection of silent myocardial and lower limb ischemia are established, data on screening asymptomatic carotid lesions remain scarce. However, such screening would be costly. Since the prevalence of diabetes increases constantly, it is necessary to keep screening costs low by setting up criteria for the selection of patients at risk of ischemic cerebral attack and those who will need medical or surgical attention. Diabetic patients, particularly type 2, often have many reasons to take anti-platelet agents and lipid-lowering therapy. Therefore, carotid ultrasonography screening would have little effect on treatment modification or on glycaemia and blood pressure objectives, but could improve the prognosis of operable lesions. IN THE GENERAL POPULATION A one-time screening program was considered worthwhile if the prevalence of severe asymptomatic stenosis was over 20%. The presence of another arterial occlusive disease or other cardio-vascular risk factors could be a major argument for screening. IN DIABETIC PATIENTS Carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) was recognized as a reliable prognostic indicator of heart attack and stroke. It worsens with duration of diabetes, renal failure, cardiac neuropathy and poor long term glycaemic control. CONCLUSION Our review suggests that a one-time carotid ultrasonography screening could be recommended for diabetic patients with coronary disease or lower limb atherosclerosis (secondary prevention), all diabetic patients above 60 years of age, smokers, hypertensive and with hypercholesterolemia; type 1 diabetic patients with poor long term glycaemic control; all type 2 diabetic patients with renal failure, a long duration of ill-controlled diabetes or with a carotid bruit. This literature review should be analyzed with caution. It would be helpful to organize a prospective long term study on all types of diabetic patients, including a carotid ultrasonography screening program by experienced radiologists.

Abstract
BACKGROUND 2-Deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) is an analog of glucose that is preferentially captured by tumors and is accumulated in transformed cells, because the phosphorylated molecule (2-DG-6P) cannot be metabolized or diffused outside the cells. Targeted with a fluorine atom, 18F-DG is currently used to visualize malignant tumors (PET scan). Although cancer cells have been reported to be strongly dependent on glycolysis (Warburg effect), very few reports have studied the inhibitory effects of 2-DG on cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS Our objective was to study, in a large panel of human malignant cells of various origins (ovarian, squamous, cerebral, hepatic, colonic and mesothelial), if the inhibitory activity of 2DG against tumor growth could be considered a general phenomenon and to determine its effect on the cell cycle. RESULTS Four types of response in the different cell lines were observed when cells were cultured in the presence of 2-DG (5 mM) continuous exposure: proliferation slow down; proliferation arrest without signs of apoptosis; strong cell cycle arrest accompanied by moderate apoptosis induction; massive apoptosis. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Recurrence and cisplatin resistance that progressively develops in the course of treatments are major impediments in ovarian cancer therapy. We investigated the involvement of alterations of different signaling pathways in this acquired chemoresistance. METHODS We studied the activation of these pathways in a model of progressive acquisition of resistance that we established, by discontinuously exposing a sensitive ovarian carcinoma cell line, OAW42, to increasing concentrations of cisplatin. RESULTS OAW42-T1 and -T2 variants, which emerged after the first two treatments of OAW42 cells with 5 microg/ml cisplatin, showed enhanced but transient resistance. OAW42-R cells, obtained following successive reiterations of the treatment, displayed both a stronger resistance to cisplatin-induced apoptosis and an increased capacity to recover a normal proliferation after treatment. The measurement of DNA adducts demonstrated that the mechanisms leading to a decreased DNA platination could not explain the level of resistance of OAW42-R cells. The simultaneous study of activation pattern of key proteins of different signaling pathways revealed that cisplatin induced both activation of ERK and p38 and inhibition of P-FAK in the sensitive cells, whereas it progressively failed to elicit such a response in the resistant variants. In contrast, STAT3 and Akt did not seem to be involved in the acquired chemoresistance in our model. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggested that emergence of chemoresistance was accompanied with the progressive loss of ERK and p38 activation and with the maintenance of FAK activation in response to cisplatin, and they demonstrated that these alterations were early events in the course of treatments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate eating disorder variables and self image in Italian female adolescents asking for a weight control treatment. METHOD Eating Disorder Inventory-2 (1991) and Offer Self-Image questionnaire (1989) were administered; 100 subjects (75 outpatients and 25 controls) were enrolled over a period of three months and divided into three study groups (normal, overweight and obese), and one control group. RESULTS The relationship between BMI and problematic personality traits tends to be linear and positive. Obese adolescent females describe themselves in more negative terms than non-obese individuals and show a psychological profile similar to individuals with eating disorders, especially for Drive for Thinness and Interoceptive Awareness. Even in the absence of overt mental pathology, obesity can result associated to a psychological distress and it's a risk factor for mental health.

Abstract
We study the temperature-induced growth of polymer micelles based on Pluronic P84 in brine (2 M NaCl) using small-angle neutron scattering, static and dynamic light scattering, and viscometry as a function of temperature and polymer concentration. Spherical micelles below 30 degrees C are shown to grow between about 30 and 40 degrees C into wormlike micelles long enough to enter the semidilute regime for polymer volume fraction larger than 0.005. The entanglements in this regime are responsible for a huge increase in the viscosity. Above about 41 degrees C, the micellar aggregates become denser as the cloud point is approached and the viscosity drops.
