Comparing Different Sticky Traps to Monitor the Occurrence of Philaenus spumarius and Neophilaenus campestris, Vectors of Xylella fastidiosa, in Different Crops. INSECTS 2023; 14:777. Abstract
Following the detection of the quarantine bacterium Xylella fastidiosa (Wells et al.) in the Apulia region (southern Italy) and the identification of spittlebugs as the main vector species that contributes to its epidemic spread, monitoring activities have been intensified in an attempt to implement vector control strategies. To date, sweep nets have been the most widely used sampling method to monitor adult spittlebug populations. Field experiments were carried out, during 2018 and 2019, to evaluate the effectiveness of sticky traps in capturing spittlebugs in different woody crops. The attractiveness of different traps was compared: four colored sticky traps (white, red, blue, and yellow), with the yellow sticky traps having three different background patterns (plain yellow, yellow with a black circle pattern, and yellow with a black line pattern). In addition, the efficiency of the yellow sticky traps was evaluated by placing the traps on the ground or hanging them from the canopies in orchards with different spittlebug population densities. Trap catches of Philaenus spumarius (Linnaeus) and Neophilaenus campestris (Fallén) (Hemiptera: Aphrophoridae) were compared with those collected using sweep nets. The two spittlebug species showed a similar response to the colored traps and were mainly attracted to the yellow sticky traps. Captures throughout the adult season indicated that an accurate estimation of the presence and abundance of spittlebugs can be obtained by integrating the two sampling methods. Moreover, sweep nets appeared to be more efficient in collecting adults soon after their emergence, while the use of sticky traps was more efficient in the rest of the adult season when the use of traps can significantly expedite vector monitoring programs.

Abstract
Critical to successful application of the sterile insect technique against Aedes albopictus (Skuse) is the development of an efficient and standardized rearing protocol to be employed in the mass production system. In this study, several life history traits of Ae. albopictus were analyzed to identify upper and lower thresholds of larval density and diet concentration. Survival to pupation, time to pupation, and sex ratio were evaluated under a range of larval densities (0.5-5 larvae/ml) and food levels (0.05-1.6 mg/larva/d) using two larval diets (one locally developed; one developed by the FAO/IAEA). The larvae reared at 28 °C, at a density of 2 larvae/ml and receiving a food dose equal to 0.6 mg/larva/d of a diet consisting of 50% tuna meal, 50% bovine liver powder (the FAO/IAEA diet), and, as an additive, 0.2 g of Vitamin Mix per 100 ml of diet solution, developed in 5 d and had 90% survival to the pupal stage. With this rearing regime male pupae production 24 h after the onset of pupation was the highest; these pupae were ∼94% male.

The experience of West Nile virus integrated surveillance system in the Emilia-Romagna region: five years of implementation, Italy, 2009 to 2013. ACTA ACUST UNITED AC 2014; 19. Abstract
Predicting West Nile virus (WNV) circulation and the risk of WNV epidemics is difficult due to complex interactions of multiple factors involved. Surveillance systems that timely detect virus activity in targeted areas, and allow evidence-based risk assessments may therefore be necessary. Since 2009, a system integrating environmental (mosquitoes and birds) and human surveillance has been implemented and progressively improved in the Emilia-Romagna region, Italy. The objective is to increase knowledge of WNV circulation and to reduce the probability of virus transmission via blood, tissue and organ donation. As of 2013, the system has shown highly satisfactory results in terms of early detection capacity (the environmental surveillance component allowed detection of WNV circulation 3–4 weeks before human cases of West Nile neuroinvasive disease (WNND) occurred), sensitivity (capacity to detect virus circulation even at the enzootic level) and area specificity (capacity to indicate the spatial distribution of the risk for WNND). Strong correlations were observed between the vector index values and the number of human WNND cases registered at the province level. Taking into consideration two scenarios of surveillance, the first with environmental surveillance and the second without, the total costs for the period from 2009 to 2013 were reduced when environmental surveillance was considered (EUR 2.093 million for the first scenario vs EUR 2.560 million for the second). Environmental surveillance helped to reduce costs by enabling a more targeted blood unit testing strategy. The inclusion of environmental surveillance also increased the efficiency of detecting infected blood units and further allowed evidence-based adoption of preventative public health measures.

Abstract
Blood and urine perchloroethylene and urine trichloroacetic acid, as markers of exposure, and serum AST, ALT, GGT and creatinine, urine total solutes and proteins, angiotensin converting enzyme, N-acetyl-ß-D-glucosaminidase and glutamine synthetase, as markers of effect, were measured in 40 dry-cleaning and 45 ironing-shop female workers. Average perchloroethylene air level in the dry-cleaning shops was 59.7 mg m(-3), i.e. three-fold lower than the current A.C.G.I.H. TLV-TWA (170 mg (m-3)). No statistically significant difference in the mean values of any of the effect markers was observed between the two groups, except for AST which was significantly higher in drycleaners. In addition, a statistically significant correlation was observed in dry-cleaners between environmental perchloroethylene and total urinary solutes (r = 0.308, p < 0.05) or urine glutamine synthetase (r= 0.469, p < 0 .01), between glutamine synthetase and blood perchloroethylene in post-shift (r= 0.406, p < 0.01) or urinary perchloroethylene in post(r= 0.571, p < 0.001) or pre-shift (r= 0.586, p < 0.001), and between urinary perchloroethylene in pre-shift and GGT (r= 0.407, p < 0.05). Interestingly, some statistically significant correlations between exposure and effect indices were found in ironing-shop workers alone, as in all subjects. Finally, transaminases, GGT and total urinary proteins were influenced by age and alcohol consumption which were significantly higher in dry-cleaners, thus providing an explanation for some of the correlations observed. In conclusion, our results show a dose-related increase of glutamine synthetase activity,a marker of damage of the pars recta of the kidney proximal tubule, in the urine of female subjects exposed to perchloroethylene concentrations in the work environment lower than current A.C.G.I.H. TLV-TWA.

Pilot field trials with Aedes albopictus irradiated sterile males in Italian urban areas. JOURNAL OF MEDICAL ENTOMOLOGY 2013; 50:317-325. Abstract
The pilot field studies here presented are part of a long-term research program aimed to develop a cost-effective sterile insect technique (SIT) methodology to suppress Aedes albopictus (Skuse) populations. Aedes albopictus is a mosquito species mainly developing in man-made containers and with an island-like urban and suburban distribution. These two features make the application of the sterile insect technique a possible control strategy. Five trials have been performed in three small towns from 2005 to 2009 (Emilia-Romagna region, northern Italy). Reared male pupae, sexed by a sieving technique allowing the recovery of approximately 26-29% of males, were exposed to gamma rays and immediately released in the field. Adult population density was estimated based on a weekly monitoring of egg density in the ovitraps, whereas induced sterility was estimated by measuring the hatching percentage of weekly collected eggs in SIT and control areas. Results showed that sterile males released at the rate of 896-1,590 males/ha/wk induced a significant sterility level in the local population. In addition, when the sterility level achieved values in the range of 70-80%, a similar reduction also was found for the egg density in the ovitraps. We could estimate that the minimum egg sterility value of 81% should be maintained to obtain suppression of the local population. Immigration of mated females was not a main issue in the small villages where trials have been run.

Mating competitiveness of Aedes albopictus radio-sterilized males in large enclosures exposed to natural conditions. JOURNAL OF MEDICAL ENTOMOLOGY 2013; 50:94-102. Abstract
Mating competitiveness trials have been conducted in large net-screened enclosures (8 by 5 by 2.8 m) built in a natural shaded environment, in the summers of 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009 in northern Italy. Aedes albopictus (Skuse) males were radio-sterilized by applying gamma radiations at doses in the range 30-60 Gy. Gamma radiation was administered to aged pupae at the rate of 2.3 Gy/min. Reared radiated males (originally collected in Rimini, Forli, Bologna, Matera, Pinerolo) and hybrid radiated males were tested against wild fertile males (originated from eggs collected in Rimini and Cesena) and reared fertile males, in multiple comparisons for mating competitiveness with reared or wild females. The ratio was kept constant at 100-100_100 (fertile males-radiated males_virgin females). Mating competitiveness was estimated through the calculation of the hatching rate of the eggs laid in oviposition traps positioned inside enclosures. No clear effect of the strains tested (reared, wild, or hybrid) was found. Results demonstrated that reducing the radiation dose from 60 to 30 Gy increases males' competitiveness. Laboratory investigations conducted after controversial results in the 2006 preliminary trials, showed that radiation induces precociousness in adult male emergence.

Abstract
After emphasizing the characteristics of the sector and the difficulty of applying traditional industrial hygiene methods for assessing exposure to chemical agents in the construction industry, we have reviewed the major experiences of environmental and biological monitoring that can be derived from the literature. Although the determination of exposure through environmental measures should be considered the most appropriate instrument, it should be paid for the study of specific activities, while it is preferable in many situations the use of simplified tools (such as algorithms and databases) that allow the risk estimation and enable the adoption of safe work procedures and environmental and individual protection devices.

Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) population size survey in the 2007 chikungunya outbreak area in Italy. II: Estimating epidemic thresholds. JOURNAL OF MEDICAL ENTOMOLOGY 2012; 49:388-399. Abstract
Our study compared different estimates of adult mosquito abundance (Pupal Demographic Survey [PDS], Human Landing Collection [HLC], Number of Bites declared by Citizens during interviews [NBC]) to the mean number of eggs laid in ovitraps. We then calculated a disease risk threshold in terms of number of eggs per ovitrap above which an arbovirus epidemic may occur. The study was conducted during the summers of 2007 and 2008 in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy where a chikungunya epidemic occurred in 2007. Ovitrap monitoring lasted from May to September, while adult sampling by means of PDS, HLC, and NBC was repeated three times each summer. Based on calculated rate of increase of the disease (R(0)) and the number of bites per human per day measured during the outbreak, we estimated that only 10.1% of the females transmitted the chikungunya virus in the principal focus. Under our conditions, we demonstrated that a positive correlation can be found between the females' density estimated by means of PDS, HLC, and NBC and the mean number of eggs in the ovitraps. We tested our hypothesis during the 2007 secondary outbreak of CHIKV in Cervia, and found that R(0) calculated based on the number of biting females estimated from the egg density was comparable to the R(0) calculated based on the progression of the human cases. The identification of an epidemic threshold based on the mean egg density may define the high risk areas and focus control programs.

Abstract
The population of Aedes albopictus (Skuse) (Diptera: Culicidae) was measured in four towns in northern Italy by means of Stegomyia indices (house index: percentage of houses with at least one active breeding site; container index: percentage of containers with larvae; and Breteau index: number of active breeding sites per premises), pupae per premises index (PPI), pupae per hectare index (PHI), and ovitrap monitoring. A detailed investigation on types and number of productive or potential larval habitats in the inspected premises was performed. Catch basins were the most productive breeding sites in both private and public areas. The influence of the premises maintenance and premises shading indices (PMI and PSI) on the population indices and the correlations between the latter and egg density were assessed. The highest PPI was found in badly maintained premises, most times combined with shady coverage. Stegomyia indices and PPI were well correlated with each other, but not with the PHI, which also included the pupae collected in public areas. We obtained a highly positive correlation (R = 0.86) between the PHI and weekly mean egg density estimated 7-14 d after inspection of the premises. The number of females per hectare, calculated using the Focks model, was correlated with the mean egg density of the week after sampling (R = 0.79), and we propose that ovitrap monitoring can be used to evaluate the efficiency of the control activities or to determine a mean egg density threshold for epidemic risk evaluation.

Abstract
In the present study we used AOPPs and AGE as early markers of oxidative stress in refinery oil workers. In addition we evaluated whether a genetically determined reduction in the ability to detoxify electrophilic compounds, such as that expected among individuals with glutathione S-transferase (GST) null genotypes might influence the levels of AOPPs thus increasing toxicity. The study was performed on 25 oil refinery workers and in 18 age-matched control subjects. We found a statistically significant increase of AOPPs in exposed workers with respect to controls while AGE levels were not different. Finally serum level of AOPPs and AGE were not correlated with the different GTS genotypes.

[Lesser validity of urinary benzene than S-phenylmercapturic acid for measuring occupational and environmental exposure to very low concentrations of benzene]. GIORNALE ITALIANO DI MEDICINA DEL LAVORO ED ERGONOMIA 2011; 33:117-124. [PMID: 21796919] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 05/31/2023]
Abstract
AIM To study the validity of urinary benzene as a biomarker of low and very low exposure to this toxicant, as compared with t,t-muconic acid (t,t-MA) and S-phenylmercapturic acid (SPMA), also taking into account the influence of cigarette smoking and co-exposure to toluene on the urinary excretion of benzene. MATERIALS AND METHODS The results obtained in two different studies were compared: in the first, workers occupationally exposed to low concentrations of benzene (18 fuel tanker drivers and 23 filling station attendants) were compared with 31 controls and in the second, workers exposed to very low concentrations of benzene (the same 23 filling station attendants) were compared with the 31 controls. Exposure to airborne benzene and toluene was monitored with passive personal samplers (Radiello). Then the urine collected at the end of the work shift was analyzed for t,t-MA, SPMA and urinary benzene. All participants also filled out a questionnaire about their lifestyle habits. RESULTS There were no differences among the three groups in terms of age and smoking habit. Occupational exposure to benzene and toluene and the urinary concentrations of t,t-MA, SPMA and urinary benzene were higher in the fuel tanker drivers than the filling station attendants and higher in the latter than in the controls. Cigarette smoking was found to be associated with urinary excretion of t,t-MA, SPMA and urinary benzene at both low and very low exposure to benzene. The biomarkers t,t-MA, SPMA and urinary benzene were almost always correlated, for both low and very low exposure to benzene. Notably, for low exposure to benzene a dependency relation was found with the levels of t,t-MA, SPMA and urinary benzene on both cigarette smoking and airborne benzene, whereas for very low exposure to benzene there was a dependency relation of SPMA on cigarette smoking and airborne benzene, of urinary benzene only on cigarette smoking and of t,t-MA on none of the variables considered. CONCLUSIONS For occupational exposure to low concentrations of benzene, urinary benzene and SPMA showed a comparable validity, while for exposure to very low concentrations of this toxicant the validity of SPMA was confirmed while urinary benzene was found to be less useful. Cigarette smoking was the main factor conditioning the excretion of all the biomarkers of benzene in conditions of both low and very low exposure to the toxicant, so for the analysis of occupational exposure to benzene it is best to recommend abstention from smoking at least in the hours immediately before urine collection.

Applicability of urinary benzene to biological monitoring of occupational and environmental exposure to very low benzene concentrations. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To verify whether urinary benzene is an applicable biomarker of occupational exposure to very low concentrations of benzene, considering the influence of cigarette smoke and benzene-toluene co-exposure. MATERIALS AND METHODS 23 filling station attendants with occupational exposure to benzene and 31 controls were analyzed. Occupational and environmental exposure was monitored and t,t-muconic acid (t,t-MA), S-phenylmercapturic acid (SPMA), urinary benzene and creatinine in the urine samples were tested. RESULTS Occupational exposure to benzene and toluene was significantly higher in the filling station attendants than in the controls, whereas t,t-MA, SPMA and urinary benzene were not different in the two groups. Instead, the smoker group showed significantly higher values for the above biomarkers than the non-smoker group, each of which included both exposed workers and controls. SPMA was dependent on airborne benzene and cigarette smoking, and urinary benzene only on cigarette smoking, while t,t-MA was not dependent on either of these variables. CONCLUSIONS At very low concentrations of occupational exposure to benzene, urinary benzene is less valid than SPMA as a biomarker, even if both are strongly influenced by smoking habit. Abstention from smoking should therefore be recommended for at least two hours before urine collection.

Abstract
In Italy, Aedes albopictus Skuse is currently recognized as the most dangerous mosquito, and as currently applied conventional control methods gave unsatisfactory results, we are developing alternative strategies such as the sterile insect technique. To find the optimal sterilizing dose, male pupae were exposed to different doses of gamma rays in the range 20-80 Gy, generated by a Cesium-137 source. The effects of male pupal age at irradiation and gamma ray dose on adult male emergence, sterility level, longevity, and mating capacity were evaluated, and dose-response curves of residual fertility were calculated. Radiation tests were also performed on female pupae to observe their reproductive capacity in case of accidental release. Results confirmed that the age at which the male pupa is irradiated is an important factor that affects the longevity of the adult, whereas the effect of age on the induced sterility level is less pronounced. When male pupae older than 30 h were irradiated, the longevity of the adults was not affected by doses up to 40 Gy. The 40-Gy dose appeared sufficient to induce high level of sterility (>99%) at any male pupal age for all the strains tested. The duration of coupling and the number of mated females per male appeared to be affected by the radiation received by male pupae only at doses higher than 40 Gy. The female pupae were more sensitive to radiation than male pupae, with strong reduction in fecundity and fertility at 20 Gy and complete suppression of oviposition at higher doses.

Abstract
This article reports the results of a study, conducted in the framework of the scientific activities of the Italian Society for Reference Values, aimed at defining reference values of urinary trans,trans-muconic acid (t,t-MA) in the general population not occupationally exposed to benzene. t,t-MA concentrations detected in 376 subjects of the resident population in three areas of Italy, two in central (Florence and southern Tuscany) and one in northern Italy (Padua), by three laboratories, compared by repeated interlaboratory controls, showed an interval of 14.4-225.0 microg/L (5th-95th percentile) and a geometric mean of 52.5 microg/L. The concentrations measured were influenced by tobacco smoking in a statistically significant way: Geometric mean concentrations were 44.8 microg/L and 76.1 microg/Ll in nonsmokers (264 subjects) and smokers (112 subjects), respectively. In the nonsmoking population, a significant influence of gender was found when concentrations were corrected for urinary creatinine, geometric mean concentrations being 36.7 microg/g creatinine in males (128 subjects) and 44.7 microg/g creatinine in females (136 subjects). The place of residence of subjects did not seem to influence urinary excretion of the metabolite, although personal inhalation exposure to benzene over a 24-h period showed slightly higher concentrations in Padua and Florence (geometric means of 6.5 microg/m(3) and 6.6 microg/m(3), respectively) than in southern Tuscany (geometric mean of 3.9 microg/m(3)). Concentration of t,t-MA in urine samples collected at the end of personal air sampling showed little relationship to personal inhalation exposure to benzene, confirming the importance of other factors in determining excretion of t,t-MA when concentrations in personal air samples are very low.

Abstract
To assess occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields, 11 microwave (MW), 4 short-wave diathermy and 15 magneto therapy devices were analysed in eight physiotherapy departments. Measurements taken at consoles and environmental mapping showed values above European Directive 2004/40/EC and ACGIH exposure limits at approximately 50 cm from MW applicators (2.45 GHz) and above the Directive magnetic field limit near the diathermy unit (27.12 MHz). Levels in front of MW therapy applicators decreased rapidly with distance and reduction in power; this may not always occur in work environments where nearby metal structures (chairs, couches, etc.) may reflect or perturb electromagnetic fields. Large differences in stray field intensities were found for various MW applicators. Measurements of power density strength around MW electrodes confirmed radiation fields between 30 degrees and 150 degrees , with a peak at 90 degrees , in front of the cylindrical applicator and maximum values between 30 degrees and 150 degrees over the whole range of 180 degrees for the rectangular parabolic applicator. Our results reveal that although most areas show substantially low levels of occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields in physiotherapy units, certain cases of over-occupational exposure limits do exist.

Abstract
The influence of cigarette smoking on concentrations of urinary benzene, a sensitive and specific biomarker proposed for biological monitoring of exposure to very low doses of benzene, was investigated in 24 filling-station attendants and 31 workers non occupationally exposed to benzene. Environmental monitoring was performed by personal passive samplers "Radiello", and a spot urine sample was collected at the end of the work shift, from all subjects, for the determination of urinary benzene. Exposure to benzene resulted significantly higher in filling-station attendants (mean 23.3 +/- 17.0 microg/m3; range 4.5-66.3 microg/m3) than in controls (mean 4.6 +/- 2.6 microg/m3; range < 3-11.5 microg/m3), while concentrations of urinary benzene did not show any significant difference between the two groups. Considering all subjects as a single group, it was observed that urinary benzene concentrations were positively correlated with the number of cigarettes smoked during the sampling time (rho = 0.38; p = 0.047) and with airborne benzene levels (rho = 0.32; p = 0.019), and negatively correlated with the time elapsed between the last smoked cigarette and urine collecting (rho = -0.40; p = 0.045). Multiple regression analysis confirmed the influence of cigarette smoking on urinary benzene concentrations. In conclusion, our study showed the validity of urinary benzene as a biomarker for biological monitoring of exposure to very low doses of benzene, although cigarette smoking determined a prevalent etiological role at the low environmental benzene concentrations observed.

Abstract
The total tannin concentration was determined, using two different SPF methods, in 35 dust powdered wood species, both hard and softwood. Using direct reading-method (280 nm) the concentration varied from 2485 mg/g for Swedish pine to 35,843 mg/g for European oak (quercus robur, hardwood). The data obtained with the second method (Folin-Chocalteau) were well correlated (y = 0.9885x + 4.3373; r = 0.84; n=35) with the data obtained with the first method. The measured concentrations are usually higher in hardwood than softwood tested. Finally, a simple HPLC-DAD method was tested for gallic acid (GA), recently proposed as a marker for oak dust.

[Validation of PM10 and PM2.5 personal samplers: comparison between PEM and CEN-ARPAV selectors]. GIORNALE ITALIANO DI MEDICINA DEL LAVORO ED ERGONOMIA 2005; 27:362-6. Abstract
In order to validate specific personal selectors for the collection of fine particles, 65 double measurements of PM10 and PM2.5 were carried out at the same collection site; thus allowing a comparison between two different methods of sampling. The first method was that normally used by ARPAV in order to sample the above-mentioned granulometric fractions in outdoor environment. The second method was chosen by us for personal sampling (PEM working at 2 l/min and at 4 l/min). In both cases the filters gravimetric analysis conformed to the expectations of D.M. 60 of 2/4/2002. The comparison between the two methods showed a good correlation in both the granulometric fractions: correlation coefficients r for the PM2.5 are equal to 0.96 and 0.99 for the PEM working at 2 l/min and at 4 l/min respectively; r for the PM10 are equal to 0.98 and 0.99 for the PEM working at 2 l/min and at 4 l/min respectively. The analysis of results in terms of fine particles concentration and difference between methods against their mean, shows a slight overestimate of the particles concentration with PEM working at 2 l/min, compared to those working at 4 l/min. Nevertheless, considering the good results obtained even with a flow of 2 l/min, we believe that using PEM working at 2 l/min to monitoring 24 hours-personal exposure assures an improved capacity in the battery-operated pumps.

[New biomarkers of exposure]. GIORNALE ITALIANO DI MEDICINA DEL LAVORO ED ERGONOMIA 2004; 26:278-97. [PMID: 15584435] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 05/01/2023]
Abstract
In this paper we have defined the new biomarkers of exposure (NBE) as those biomarkers discovered in the last five years and, among previously validated biomarkers, also those applied in different ranges of doses or those determined in biological matrices which differ from matrices originally considered. We examined the results from the surveys carried out by the main Italian research units involved in biological monitoring, i.e. those from the Universities of Brescia, Milan, Naples, Padua, Parma, Pavia, Turin and Verona. The data were collected using a standardized model and included the following: type of element or organic compound, type of biomarker, analytical technique and method, their relationship with environmental monitoring data, their relationship with effect indicators or effects in general, improvement with respect to old biomarkers, reference values. Twenty two NBEs were identified: 14 elements and chemical compounds as such or as metabolites, 4 examples of mixtures, 3 of new matrices, one of speciation. Among the others, aspects such as interest in requiring NBE, quality assurance, availability, cost-benefit ratio were discussed. We conclude that development of this specific field of research appears to be a crucial point for future improvement in risk assessment and health surveillance procedures.

Abstract
We considered data of environmental monitoring during three working days in a dentist's office who habitually employs nitrous oxide (N2O): conscious sedation is used to alleviate anxiety and to diminish or eliminate dental pain. Three different nose masks were tested to determine influence on environmental pollution by N2O. The study shows that the levels of N2O always remains low with the use of proper dental procedures, although the chose of the type of nose mask can further diminish air pollution and the exposure of dental personnel.

Abstract
We considered data of samples collected in the period 1994-2001 in 83 operating rooms of 13 different public and private hospitals in Veneto Region. The anaestetic gases more used in operating rooms were nitrous oxide, isoflurane and, more recently, sevflurane. The mostly polluted positions were those in proximity of anaesthesiologic devices; the gases average concentrations were low in all hospitals examined, although some operating rooms demonstrated concentrations of anasthetic gases exceeding limit values. Lastly, the professional figures had different exposure to the various anaesthetic gases.

Adjustment to concentration-dilution of spot urine samples: correlation between specific gravity and creatinine. Int Arch Occup Environ Health 2001; 74:63-7. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Spot urine samples were investigated to determine correlations between urinary creatinine and specific gravity, and intra- and inter-day variations other than gender- and age-dependence of urinary concentrations. METHODS Urinary creatinine concentrations and specific gravity were determined in 534 spot samples (385 from men and 149 from women). Subjects' ages ranged between 18 and 68 years. Spot urine samples were also collected from 14 male subjects before and after a 1-week work-shift for the evaluation of intra- and inter-day variations of creatinine and specific gravity. RESULTS In spot samples, creatinine concentrations ranged between 0.16 and 4.36 g/l and specific gravity between 1.002 and 1.037. A high correlation (r = 0.82, P < 0.001) was observed between creatinine and specific gravity; male subjects showed significantly higher values of creatinine (P < 0.001) than did female subjects (1.90 +/- 0.74 and 1.41 +/- 0.72 g/l, respectively) and specific gravity (1.023 +/- 0.006 and 1.020 +/- 0.007, respectively). In addition, creatinine but not specific gravity significantly decreased (P < 0.02) in subjects older than 50 years, compared with those under 40. CONCLUSIONS Results confirm the gender-dependence of creatinine concentrations in spot specimens and also show age-dependence, indicating the need for these aspects to be considered when the range of acceptable samples is to be set. No significant intra- or inter-day variations were observed for the two parameters. Lastly, the possibility of a comparison of differently adjusted values was indicated by a conversion formula derived from adjustments to creatinine and the corresponding specific gravity of a hypothetical urinary value, as follows: specific gravity adjusted values = 1.48 x creatinine adjusted values.

Abstract
Multilocus electrophoresis analysis has been used to study the genetic structure of 18 populations of Aedes albopictus newly introduced to Italy, in comparison with two populations in the United States, four in Japan, and four in Indonesia. Allozyme analysis revealed that 15 out of the 18 studied loci were polymorphic among the 28 populations. No significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium were found at polymorphic loci. High genetic affinity was observed between the Italian populations and those from the United States and Japan. The analysis of variance in allele frequencies showed that variance among subpopulations accounted for most of the total variance, suggesting that isolation of the Italian populations is not related to distance. Analysis of linkage disequilibrium using Ohta's method shows that the variance in the frequency of allele combinations could be explained by the action of the genetic drift which accompanies the establishment of new populations. The colonization process of Ae. albopictus in Italy is following a trend similar to that previously observed in the U.S. A., probably because both infestations derive from several successive introductions, each with large numbers of individuals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study of influence of social-cultural factors on the effects of long-term hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) in preventing cardiovascular disease and menopausal osteoporosis. METHOD We examined, perspectively the social-cultural features of 394 postmenopausal women who attended the menopausal out-patient department and were eligible for long term HRT. RESULTS The HRT users were thinner and younger, with earlier menopause, physically more active, healthier, with more oophorectomies and with more professional work. Data shows that, as a whole, a greater number of healthy women are selected or self-selected for HRT. CONCLUSION Evaluating the results of long-term HRT in preventing cardiovascular disease and menopausal osteoporosis, the social-cultural features of HRT users must be carefully considered before any mass preventive interventions.

Possible utilization of metallic copper to inhibit Aedes Albopictus (Skuse) larval development. JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN MOSQUITO CONTROL ASSOCIATION 1998; 14:451-456. Abstract
The effect of metallic copper on development of Aedes albopictus was studied in the laboratory. Multiwire electric cable was used as a source of metallic copper in flower saucers colonized by Ae. albopictus. A linear regression coefficient of 0.68 was obtained between copper concentration in the water during larval development and the relative production of adults. Larval mortality was higher in earlier instars with less evident effect on 4th-instar larvae and pupae. The effect of copper on larval development time and adult weight in both sexes was also observed. The strong algicidal action is presumed to only partially explain the effect of metallic copper on Ae. albopictus larvae. A direct toxic effect also may be involved. The use of metallic copper is suggested as a practical alternative method for preventing development of Ae. albopictus in small containers such as flower saucers found in urban areas.

Study on the flying height of Aedes caspius and Culex pipiens females in the Po Delta area, Italy. JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN MOSQUITO CONTROL ASSOCIATION 1997; 13:356-360. Abstract
We have studied the vertical distribution of Culicidae in the "Ancona di Bellocchio" protected area (Regional Park of the Po Delta, Emilia-Romagna, Italy) by means of nonilluminated CDC traps baited with CO2. Traps were placed at heights of 1.5, 3, 4, and 5 m from the ground in open areas and at 1.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 m in wooded areas. We calculated the average flying height of the species caught, i.e., in order of decreasing flying height, Culex pipiens Linnaeus s.l., Culex modestus Ficalbi, Coquillettidia richiardii (Ficalbi), Aedes detritus (Haliday), Aedes caspius (Pallas). We also calculated the linear regression lines for both sites and found that 90% of Ae. caspius flew within a height of 1.64 m from the ground level, 95% within 2.68 m, and 99% at a height not exceeding 4 m; whereas 90% of Cx. pipiens moved within 3.45 m from the ground level, 95% within 4.02 m, and 99% within 4.76 m. The vertical distributions of Ae. caspius and Cx. pipiens did not vary significantly over the seasons and were not affected by the presence of trees or variations in temperature and wind velocity within the range of measurements obtained. The data obtained provide useful information for planning Ae. caspius control measures based on a mechanical barrier capable of preventing mosquitoes from moving toward residential settlements and tourist resorts bordering on the protected area as an alternative to aerial treatment with the larvicide Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis.

Abstract
In laboratory experiments, Aedes albopictus females were fed hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected human blood with a unit-feeding apparatus. Pools of engorged females were tested at various time intervals after their blood meal for the presence of HCV RNA using two methods in parallel: reverse transcription-nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and PCR with the Amplicor HCV system. Comparable results were obtained with both methods. Mosquitoes were found to be positive only immediately and 24 h after feeding. Moreover, female progeny produced negative results. Our results indicate that the Ae.albopictus strain used is incompetent as a vector of HCV.

Efficacy of different ovitraps and binomial sampling in Aedes albopictus surveillance activity. JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN MOSQUITO CONTROL ASSOCIATION 1996; 12:632-636. Abstract
The efficacy of plastic, glass, and metal ovitraps has been compared in the Desenzano del Garda (Northern Italy) urban area, infested by Aedes albopictus since 1993. Plastic and glass ovitraps gave similar results while metal ovitraps collected a significantly lower number of eggs (-56 and -59%, respectively). The reason may be related to the different internal color of the metal trap with respect to plastic and glass ones. Utilizing the Gerrard and Chiang binomial model we obtained a high r2 for all 3 ovitrap types (plastic, 0.96; glass, 0.87; metal, 0.79) indicating a good fitting of the observed data to the model. According to the desired level of precision for the estimated population, the number of each type of ovitrap required is calculated. Validation of the model in a different area of northern Italy gave positive results. The simple observation of oviposition strips for presence or absence of Ae. albopictus eggs could be adopted in surveillance programs, thus allowing considerable labor saving.

Abstract
Captopril radionuclide test (CRT) has been introduced in clinical practice as a screening test for renovascular hypertension, since it allows the detection of the decrease of glomerular filtration rate that may be induced by angiotensin converting enzyme inhibition (25 mg oral captopril) in kidneys ipsilateral to a renal artery stenosis. However, due to the low prevalence of the disease, experiences in single centers may hardly satisfy the need for representative series of patients to validate the test. Nineteen centers participated in a collaborative study (CRT European Multicenter Study) that collected data from 424 patients. Here we report on the first results obtained by inspective renographic analysis. The captopril radionuclide test greatly potentiated the diagnostic performance of conventional renography and the accuracy was maximal when relying simply on postcaptopril findings alone. Specificity was 84.1% in the overall population and 91.8% in uncomplicated patients without nephropathy and renal insufficiency. Taking into account the sole arteriographic diagnosis, sensitivity was 73.2% or 90.7% for the subjects with unilateral or bilateral stenosis and an angiographic degree of stenosis greater than or equal to 70%. On the other hand, when a successful outcome of blood pressure after revascularization or nephrectomy was considered as the gold standard for the diagnosis of renovascular hypertension, a high sensitivity was obtained (92.7%). Moreover, the test became negative after intervention in the great majority (88%) of patients who had a positive preintervention CRT and a normalization of blood pressure after revascularization.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
