Strong Anharmonicity at the Origin of Anomalous Thermal Conductivity in Double Perovskite Cs2 NaYbCl6

Anomalous thermal transport of Cs2 NaYbCl6 double-halide perovskite above room temperature is reported and rationalized. Calculations of phonon dispersion relations and scattering rates up to the fourth order in lattice anharmonicity have been conducted to determine their effective dependence on temperature. These findings show that specific phonon group velocities and lifetimes increase if the temperature is raised above 500 K. This, in combination with anharmonicity, provides the microscopic mechanism responsible for the increase in lattice thermal conductivity at high temperatures, contrary to the predictions of phonon transport theories based on solely cubic anharmonicity. The model accurately and quantitatively reproduces the experimental thermal conductivity data as a function of temperature.

Stabilization of Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells with a 2D Dion-Jacobson Passivating Layer

Inorganic metal halide perovskites such as CsPbI3 are promising for high-performance, reproducible, and robust solar cells. However, inorganic perovskites are sensitive to humidity, which causes the transformation from the black phase to the yellow δ, non-perovskite phase. Such phase instability has been a significant challenge to long-term operational stability. Here, a surface dimensionality reduction strategy is reported, using 2-(4-aminophenyl)ethylamine cation to construct a Dion-Jacobson 2D phase that covers the surface of the 3D inorganic perovskite structure. The Dion-Jacobson layer mainly grows at the grain boundaries of the perovskite, effectively passivating surface defects and providing favourable interfacial charge transfer. The resulting inorganic perovskite films exhibit excellent humidity resistance when submerged in an aqueous solution (isopropanol:water = 4:1 v/v) and exposed to a 50% humidity air atmosphere. The Dion-Jacobson 2D/3D inorganic perovskite solar cell (PSC) achieves a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.5% with a Voc of 1.197 eV. It retains 83% of its initial PCE after 1260 h of maximum power point tracking under 1.2 sun illumination. The work demonstrates an effective way for stabilizing efficient inorganic perovskite solar cells.

Exciton dissociation in 2D layered metal-halide perovskites

Layered 2D perovskites are making inroads as materials for photovoltaics and light emitting diodes, but their photophysics is still lively debated. Although their large exciton binding energies should hinder charge separation, significant evidence has been uncovered for an abundance of free carriers among optical excitations. Several explanations have been proposed, like exciton dissociation at grain boundaries or polaron formation, without clarifying yet if excitons form and then dissociate, or if the formation is prevented by competing relaxation processes. Here we address exciton stability in layered Ruddlesden-Popper PEA₂PbI₄ (PEA stands for phenethylammonium) both in form of thin film and single crystal, by resonant injection of cold excitons, whose dissociation is then probed with femtosecond differential transmission. We show the intrinsic nature of exciton dissociation in 2D layered perovskites, demonstrating that both 2D and 3D perovskites are free carrier semiconductors and their photophysics is described by a unique and universal framework.

Air- and water-stable and photocatalytically active germanium-based 2D perovskites by organic spacer engineering

There is increasing interest in the role of metal halide perovskites for heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we report a Ge-based 2D perovskite material that shows intrinsic water stability realized through organic cation engineering. Incorporating 4-phenylbenzilammonium (PhBz) we demonstrate, by means of extended experimental and computational results, that PhBz₂GeBr₄ and PhBz₂GeI₄ can achieve relevant air and water stability. The creation of composites embedding graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) allows a proof of concept for light-induced hydrogen evolution in an aqueous environment by 2D Ge-based perovskites thanks to the effective charge transfer at the heterojunction between the two semiconductors.

Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance of Triple-Cation Mixed-Halide Perovskites

Mixed-cation lead mixed-halide perovskites are the best candidates for perovskite-based photovoltaics, thanks to their higher efficiency and stability compared to the single-cation single-halide parent compounds. TripleMix (Cs_0.05MA_0.14FA_0.81PbI_2.55Br_0.45 with FA = formamidinium and MA = methylammonium) is one of the most efficient and stable mixed perovskites for single-junction solar cells. The microscopic reasons why triple-cation perovskites perform so well are still under debate. In this work, we investigated the structure and dynamics of TripleMix by exploiting multinuclear solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR), which can provide this information at a level of detail not accessible by other techniques. ¹³³Cs, ¹³C, ¹H, and ²⁰⁷Pb SSNMR spectra confirmed the inclusion of all ions in the perovskite, without phase segregation. Complementary measurements showed a peculiar longitudinal relaxation behavior for the ¹H and ²⁰⁷Pb nuclei in TripleMix with respect to single-cation single-halide perovskites, suggesting slower dynamics of both organic cations and halide anions, possibly related to the high photovoltaic performances.

Transvenous lead revision for cardiac perforation: a single centre experience

Background

Cardiac perforation is an uncommon but life-threatening complication of cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) implantation. Management strategy commonly relies on diagnostic Computed Tomography (CT) imaging and cardiac surgery. Emerging evidence has indicated a diversion from this approach. Transvenous culprit lead revision has been shown to be safe and efficacious in limited series.

We sought to evaluate the outcomes of transvenous lead revision in patients with cardiac perforation.

Method

Data was collected retrospectively of patients admitted to a single tertiary centre with CIED-related cardiac perforation between December 2013 – October 2019. Transvenous lead revision was performed as standard with cardiac surgery on standby. Patient demographics, use of CT imaging, method of removal and 30-day outcomes were recorded.

Results

Of the 46 recorded CIED-related cardiac perforations, the majority occurred in female patients (63%) and hypertensives (61%), whilst a proportion had cancer (20%) and ischaemic heart disease (30%). The culprit in most cases was a standard pacing lead (92%) of an active fixation (98%) in the right ventricle (80%) positioned at the ventricular apex (65%). The median time to presentation from implant was 14 days [IQR 4-50 days] with chest pain (44%); abnormal pacing indices was highly prevalent (95%) whilst a pericardial effusion was noted in the majority of cases (57%). CT scanning was performed in 19 cases (41%) for various indications but deemed essential in only 4, all of which had non-diagnostic pacing indices and imaging. Chest X-ray (CXR) found clear perforation, lead displacement or pleural effusion in 74% of cases, whilst an echocardiogram found these in 64% of cases. The culprit lead was replaced in the majority of cases (87%) under local anaesthesia (76%) with surgical backup. The median hospital stay was 7 days [IQR 3-10 days] with zero procedural and 30-day mortality.

Conclusion

Transvenous lead revision for CIED-related cardiac perforation is safe and efficacious. CT modality for diagnostic purposes is useful in providing incremental value in a minority of cases; patients with non-diagnostic pacing parameters and non-CT imaging benefit most from this.

Long-lived electrets and lack of ferroelectricity in methylammonium lead bromide CH3NH3PbBr3 ferroelastic single crystals

Hybrid lead halides CH₃NH₃PbX₃ (X = I, Br, and Cl) have emerged as a new class of semiconductors for low-cost optoelectronic devices with superior performance. Since their perovskite crystal structure may have lattice instabilities against polar distortions, they are also being considered as potential photo-ferroelectrics. However, so far, research on their ferroelectricity has yielded inconclusive results and the subject is far from being settled. Here, we investigate, using a combined experimental and theoretical approach, the possible presence of electric polarization in tetragonal and orthorhombic CH₃NH₃PbBr₃ (T-MAPB and O-MAPB). We found that T-MAPB does not sustain spontaneous polarization but, under an external electric field, it is projected into a metastable, ionic space-charge electret state. The electret can be frozen on cooling, producing a large and long-lasting polarization in O-MAPB. Molecular dynamics simulations show that the ferroelastic domain boundaries are able to trap charges and segregate ionic point defects, thus playing a favorable role in the stabilization of the electret. At lower temperatures, the lack of ferroelectric behavior is explained using first principles calculations as the result of the tight competition among many metastable states with randomly oriented polarization; this large configurational entropy does not allow a single polar state to dominate at any significant temperature range.

Silicon-based fluorescent platforms for copper(ii) detection in water

The potential of silicon-based fluorescent platforms for the detection of trace toxic metal ions was investigated in an aqueous environment. To this aim, silicon chips were first functionalized with amino groups, and fluorescein organic dyes, used as sensing molecules, were then covalently linked to the surface via formation of thiourea groups. The obtained hybrid heterostructures exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity towards copper(ii), a limit of detection compatible with the recommended upper limits for copper in drinking water, and good reversibility using a standard metal–chelating agent. The fluorophore–analyte interaction mechanism at the basis of the reported fluorescence quenching, as well as the potential of performance improvement, were also studied. The herein presented sensing architecture allows, in principle, tailoring of the selectivity towards other metal ions by proper fluorophore selection, and provides a favorable outlook for integration of fluorescent chemosensors with silicon photonics technology.

Covalent linkage of fluorescein to silanized silicon chips yields solid-state platforms for detection of copper(ii) in water. This architecture represents a step forward towards the fabrication of sensors for remote water analysis applications.

16-month outcomes following hybrid ablation for long-standing persistent atrial fibrillation in patients with dilated atria

Introduction

Although catheter ablation therapy is a well-established treatment for cardiac dysrhythmias, the success rates for longstanding, persistent AF with dilated atria remain unsatisfactory. The minimally invasive hybrid technology is a novel form of therapy.

Methods

A prospective, single-center UK study to evaluate the hybrid ablation technique for patients with longstanding (>1 year) persistent AF and dilated atria. Stage 1 was a minimally invasive epicardial approach for ablation of the posterior wall of left atrium (LA) and pulmonary veins (PVs). Stage 2 was a transcatheter approach via the femoral veins to isolate the endocardial aspect of the PVs +/− posterior wall. Occasionally, the sequence of the stages was reversed.

Results

Forty-one patients were enrolled for the study with a mean follow-up for 16±9 months. Mean age was 65±9 years and the mean BMI was 32±7. Males constituted 75% of the study cohort. Mean LA size was 48±7 mm and mean left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was 51.9%, although 51.6% of patients had impaired LVSF (LVEF below 55%). 87.8% CI (0.7–0.9) of patients remained in sinus rhythm (SR) without repeat ablation, whereas only 12.2% CI (0.04–0.02) had redeveloped persistent AF. Although numerically different, there was no statistically significant difference in maintaining SR between patients with severely dilated LA (>50 mm) and those without (70% vs. 90%, respectively; z=−1.39, p=0.165). Major perioperative complications during stage 1 ablation were low, with IVC injury in 1 patient and a mild stroke in 1 patient. Median LOS was 1 day (1–4 days) and there was no 30-day mortality after stage 1.

Conclusions

The hybrid ablation therapy has a conversion rate from longstanding persistent AF to SR of 87.8% at a mean follow-up of 16±9 months, without repeat ablation. LOS was short, with very few complications and no peri-operative mortality. The hybrid approach appears to be very encouraging for a condition with otherwise low success rates by conventional endocardial techniques alone.

Impact of the Hole Transport Layer on the Charge Extraction of Ruddlesden-Popper Perovskite Solar Cells

Recent works demonstrate that polyelectrolytes as a hole transport layer (HTL) offers superior performance in Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite solar cells (RPPSCs) compared to poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS). The factors contributing to such improvement need to be systematically investigated. To achieve this, we have systematically investigated how the two HTLs affect the morphology, crystallinity, and orientation of the Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite (RPP) films as well as the charge extraction of the RPPSCs. PEDOT:PSS as a HTL leads to RPP films of low crystallinity and with a number of large pinholes. These factors lead to poor charge carrier extraction and significant charge recombination in the RPPSCs. Conversely, a PCP-Na HTL gives rise to highly crystalline and pinhole-free RPPSC films. Moreover, a PCP-Na HTL provides a better energy alignment at the perovskite/HTL interface because of its higher work function compared to PEDOT:PSS. Consequently, devices using PCP-Na as HTLs are more efficient in extracting charge carriers.

Simple Processing Additive-Driven 20% Efficiency for Inverted Planar Heterojunction Perovskite Solar Cells

Compositional engineering has been a strong tool to improve the quality of the perovskite materials and, in turn, the reproducibility of the solar cells. However, the control over the active layer uniformity, one of the most important requirements for the obtainment of efficient devices, is still a weak point of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) manufacturing. Here, we develop an approach to grow a uniform mixed cation perovskite layer, foreseeing its implementation in inverted solar cells endowing organic transporting layers, through the addition of a stoiochiometric amount of tropolone as chelating agent for the lead. Thanks to low melting and boiling temperatures, tropolone is present in the system only during the colloidal liquid phase, leaving the film during its formation; this unique characteristic promotes the obtainment of ideal perovskite surface morphologies and an increased short circuit current of photovoltaic devices. A maximum power conversion efficiency of 20% was obtained, with a 25% increase with respect to the reference.

Bifacial Diffuse Absorptance of Semitransparent Microstructured Perovskite Solar Cells

An optical radiometry technique enabling simultaneous transmittance and reflectance measurements from both sides of a device was used to investigate bifacial diffuse absorptance of neutral-colored semitransparent perovskite solar cells based on a thin film of microsized perovskite islands. In such microstructured solar cells, diffuse irradiance was more effectively absorbed than direct irradiance at near-normal incidence, in contrast to reference solar cells comprising a continuous perovskite thin film. Experimental findings were discussed in ray-optic approximation in relation to the surface texture of the active layer, highlighting the role of light trapping. This absorptance spectroscopy technique is envisaged to find wide applicability to bifacial solar cells for building-integrated photovoltaics and other bifacial light-harvesting systems.

Novel Physical Vapor Deposition Approach to Hybrid Perovskites: Growth of MAPbI3 Thin Films by RF-Magnetron Sputtering

Solution-based methods represent the most widespread approach used to deposit hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite films for low-cost but efficient solar cells. However, solution-process techniques offer limited control over film morphology and crystallinity, and most importantly do not allow sequential film deposition to produce perovskite-perovskite heterostructures. Here the successful deposition of CH₃NH₃PbI₃ (MAPI) thin films by RF-magnetron sputtering is reported, an industry-tested method to grow large area devices with precisely controlled stoichiometry. MAPI films are grown starting from a single-target made of CH₃NH₃I (MAI) and PbI₂. Films are single-phase, with a barely detectable content of unreacted PbI₂, full surface coverage and thickness ranging from less than 200 nm to more than 3 μm. Light absorption and emission properties of the deposited films are comparable to as-grown solution-processed MAPI films. The development of vapor-phase deposition methods is of interest to advance perovskite photovoltaic devices with the possibility of fabricating perovskite multijunction solar cells or multicolor bright light-emitting devices in the whole visible spectrum.

Optical determination of Shockley-Read-Hall and interface recombination currents in hybrid perovskites

Metal-halide perovskite solar cells rival the best inorganic solar cells in power conversion efficiency, providing the outlook for efficient, cheap devices. In order for the technology to mature and approach the ideal Shockley-Queissier efficiency, experimental tools are needed to diagnose what processes limit performances, beyond simply measuring electrical characteristics often affected by parasitic effects and difficult to interpret. Here we study the microscopic origin of recombination currents causing photoconversion losses with an all-optical technique, measuring the electron-hole free energy as a function of the exciting light intensity. Our method allows assessing the ideality factor and breaks down the electron-hole recombination current into bulk defect and interface contributions, providing an estimate of the limit photoconversion efficiency, without any real charge current flowing through the device. We identify Shockley-Read-Hall recombination as the main decay process in insulated perovskite layers and quantify the additional performance degradation due to interface recombination in heterojunctions.

Estimation of diversity and combining abilities in Helianthus annuus L. under water stress and normal conditions

Sunflower cannot produce high yields under water-limiting conditions. The aim of the present study was to prevent the impediments on yield and to develop varieties with high-yield potential under water scarce conditions. For achieving this objective, it is necessary to detect parents with desirable traits that mainly depend on the action of genes controlling the trait under improvement, combining ability, and genetic makeup of the parents. Heterosis can also be used to pool the desirable genes from genetically divergent varieties and these divergent parents could be detected by molecular studies. Ten tolerant and five susceptible tester lines were selected, crossed, and tested for genetic diversity using simple sequence repeat primers. We identified two parents (A-10.8 and G-60) that showed maximum (46.7%) genetic dissimilarity. On an average 3.1 alleles per locus were detected for twenty pair of primers. Evaluation of mean values revealed that under stress conditions the mean performances of the genotypes were reduced for all traits under study. Parent A-10.8 was consistent as a good general combiner for achene yield per plant under both non-stress and stress conditions. Line A-10.8 in the hybrid A-10.8 x G-60 proved to be a good combiner as it showed negative specific combining ability (SCA) effects for plant height and internodal length and positive SCA effects for head weight, achene yield per plant, and membrane stability index. Valuable information on gene action, combining ability, and heterosis was generated, which could be used in further breeding programs.

Excited State Properties of Hybrid Perovskites

Metal halide perovskites have come to the attention of the scientific community for the progress achieved in solar light conversion. Energy sustainability is one of the priorities of our society, and materials advancements resulting in low-cost but efficient solar cells and large-area lighting devices represent a major goal for applied research. From a basic point of view, perovskites are an exotic class of hybrid materials combining some merits of organic and inorganic semiconductors: large optical absorption, large mobilities, and tunable band gap together with the possibility to be processed in solution. When a novel class of promising semiconductors comes into the limelight, lively discussions ensue on the photophysics of band-edge excitations, because just the states close to the band edge are entailed in energy/charge transport and light emission. This was the case several decades ago for III-V semiconductors, it has been up to 10 years ago for organics, and it is currently the case for perovskites. Our aim in this Account is to rationalize the body of experimental evidence on perovskite photophysics in a coherent theoretical framework, borrowing from the knowledge acquired over the years in materials optoelectronics. A crucial question is whether photon absorption leads to a population of unbound, conductive free charges or instead excitons, neutral and insulating bound states created by Coulomb interaction just below the energy of the band gap. We first focus on the experimental estimates of the exciton binding energy (Eb): at room temperature, Eb is comparable to the thermal energy kBT in MAPbI3 and increases up to values 2-3kBT in wide band gap MAPbBr3 and MAPbCl3. Statistical considerations predict that these values, even though comparable to or larger than thermal energy, let free carriers prevail over bound excitons for all levels of excitation densities relevant for devices. The analysis of photophysics evidence confirms that all hybrid halide perovskites behave as free-charge semiconductors. Thanks to such property, in combination with band gap energies covering the entire solar spectrum, perovskites represent a promising materials platform for highly efficient, single and multijunction solar cells. Concerning the use of perovskites as color-tunable materials in light emitting devices, free-charges are not the preferred species, as they recombine radiatively through a bimolecular process that is inefficient at the charge-injection levels typical of LED operation. Strategies to overcome this limit, and thus extend the use of perovskite materials beyond solar energy conversion, could be borrowed from inorganic semiconductor optoelectronics and include the fabrication of nanostructures with reduced dimensionality to alter the electronic density of states, as well as engineering composite materials.

Absorption F-sum rule for the exciton binding energy in methylammonium lead halide perovskites

Advances of optoelectronic devices based on methylammonium lead halide perovskites depend on understanding the role of excitons, whether it is marginal as in inorganic semiconductors, or crucial, like in organics. However, a consensus on the exciton binding energy and its temperature dependence is still lacking, even for widely studied methylammonium lead iodide and bromide materials (MAPbI3, MAPbBr3). Here we determine the exciton binding energy based on an f-sum rule for integrated UV-vis absorption spectra, circumventing the pitfalls of least-squares fitting procedures. In the temperature range 80-300 K, we find that the exciton binding energy in MAPbBr3 is EB = (60 ± 3) meV, independent of temperature; for MAPbI3, in the orthorhombic phase (below 140 K) EB = (34 ± 3) meV, while in the tetragonal phase the binding energy softens to 29 meV at 170 K and stays constant up to 300 K. Implications of binding energy values on solar cell and LED workings are discussed.

Atrial and ventricular tachyarrhythmias in military personnel

Although rare, sudden cardiac death does occur in British military personnel. In the majority of cases, the cause is considered to be a malignant ventricular tachyarrhythmia, which can be precipitated by a number of underlying pathologies. Conversely, a tachyarrhythmia may have a more benign and treatable cause, yet the initial clinical symptoms may be similar, making differentiation difficult. This is an overview of the mechanisms underlying the initiation and propagation of arrhythmias and the various pathological conditions that predispose to arrhythmia genesis, classified according to which parts of the heart are involved: atrial tachyarrhythmias, atrial and ventricular, as well as those affecting the ventricles alone. It encompasses atrial tachycardia, atrial flutter, supraventricular tachycardias and ventricular tachycardias, including the more commonly encountered inherited primary electrical diseases, also known as the channelopathies. The clinical features, investigation and management strategies are outlined. The occupational impact-in serving military personnel and potential recruits-is described, with explanations relating to the different conditions and their specific implication on continued military service.

Efficient Exciton Diffusion and Resonance-Energy Transfer in Multilayered Organic Epitaxial Nanofibers

Multilayered epitaxial nanofibers are exemplary model systems for the study of exciton dynamics and lasing in organic materials because of their well-defined morphology, high luminescence efficiencies, and color tunability. We use temperature-dependent continuous wave and picosecond photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy to quantify exciton diffusion and resonance-energy transfer (RET) processes in multilayered nanofibers consisting of alternating layers of para-hexaphenyl (p6P) and α-sexithiophene (6T) serving as exciton donor and acceptor material, respectively. The high probability for RET processes is confirmed by quantum chemical calculations. The activation energy for exciton diffusion in p6P is determined to be as low as 19 meV, proving p6P epitaxial layers also as a very suitable donor material system. The small activation energy for exciton diffusion of the p6P donor material, the inferred high p6P-to-6T resonance-energy-transfer efficiency, and the observed weak PL temperature dependence of the 6T acceptor material together result in an exceptionally high optical emission performance of this all-organic material system, thus making it well suited, for example, for organic light-emitting devices.

A systematic review of the effects of adding neostigmine to local anesthetics for neuraxial administration in obstetric anesthesia and analgesia

BACKGROUND

Drugs used in obstetric patients must accomplish two goals: efficacy and safety for both mother and fetus. Neostigmine has been co-administered epidurally and intrathecally with local anesthetics and other adjuncts in the obstetric setting. The aim of this meta-analysis was to assess the efficacy and incidence of adverse events related to the use of neostigmine in obstetric anesthesia.

METHODS

A meta-analysis of randomized-controlled human trials was conducted using the data sources Google Scholar and PubMed (updated 1 November 2014). Inclusion criteria were: random allocation to treatment; comparison of neostigmine or neostigmine with local anesthetics and/or other adjuvants versus placebo or placebo with local anesthetics and/or other adjuvants; and approval by an ethics committee.

RESULTS

The use of neostigmine as an adjuvant in neuraxial anesthesia is associated with a reduction in the dose of local anesthetic during labor analgesia and postoperative analgesia following cesarean section: mean reduction of local anesthetic (ropivacaine or bupivacaine) vs. control -4.08 (95% CI -6.7 to -1.5) mg/h (P=0.002). The risk of nausea was increased vs. control with intrathecal neostigmine (OR 8.99 [95% CI 4.74 to 17.05], P <0.001) but not with epidural neostigmine (OR 0.97 [95% CI 0.46 to 2.05], P=0.94). Use of neuraxial neostigmine was associated with a decrease in the risk of pruritus but there was no increase in the incidence of hypotension, dizziness or sedation and no effect on the incidence of abnormal fetal heart rate patterns or Apgar scores.

CONCLUSIONS

Neuraxial administration of neostigmine significantly reduces local anesthetic consumption without serious adverse side effects to the mother or fetus. However, neostigmine is only recommended for epidural administration as intrathecal use significantly increases the incidence of maternal nausea and vomiting.

Severe Maternal Pre- and Postpartum Intra-Abdominal Bleeding due to Deciduosis

The term "deciduosis" is used to describe the severe pregnancy-associated occurrence of ectopic decidua with a usually asymptomatic course. We report on two cases of massive maternal intra-abdominal bleeding due to such symptomatic changes. The complications arose at different time points for the two cases: prepartum (26th week of pregnancy) or, respectively, - reported here for the first time - seven days postpartum. As well as differential diagnostic aspects we describe the management of the disease and its possible effects on subsequent pregnancies.

Estimated dose rates to members of the public from external exposure to patients with 131I thyroid treatment

PURPOSE

Estimated dose rates that may result from exposure to patients who had been administered iodine-131 ((131)I) as part of medical therapy were calculated. These effective dose rate estimates were compared with simplified assumptions under United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Regulatory Guide 8.39, which does not consider body tissue attenuation nor time-dependent redistribution and excretion of the administered (131)I.

METHODS

Dose rates were estimated for members of the public potentially exposed to external irradiation from patients recently treated with (131)I. Tissue attenuation and iodine biokinetics were considered in the patient in a larger comprehensive effort to improve external dose rate estimates. The external dose rate estimates are based on Monte Carlo simulations using the Phantom with Movable Arms and Legs (PIMAL), previously developed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission. PIMAL was employed to model the relative positions of the (131)I patient and members of the public in three exposure scenarios: (1) traveling on a bus in a total of six seated or standing permutations, (2) two nursing home cases where a caregiver is seated at 30 cm from the patient's bedside and a nursing home resident seated 250 cm away from the patient in an adjacent bed, and (3) two hotel cases where the patient and a guest are in adjacent rooms with beds on opposite sides of the common wall, with the patient and guest both in bed and either seated back-to-back or lying head to head. The biokinetic model predictions of the retention and distribution of (131)I in the patient assumed a single voiding of urinary bladder contents that occurred during the trip at 2, 4, or 8 h after (131)I administration for the public transportation cases, continuous first-order voiding for the nursing home cases, and regular periodic voiding at 4, 8, or 12 h after administration for the hotel room cases. Organ specific activities of (131)I in the thyroid, bladder, and combined remaining tissues were calculated as a function of time after administration. Exposures to members of the public were considered for (131)I patients with normal thyroid uptake (peak thyroid uptake of ∼27% of administered (131)I), differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC, 5% uptake), and hyperthyroidism (80% uptake).

RESULTS

The scenario with the patient seated behind the member of the public yielded the highest dose rate estimate of seated public transportation exposure cases. The dose rate to the adjacent room guest was highest for the exposure scenario in which the hotel guest and patient are seated by a factor of ∼4 for the normal and differentiated thyroid cancer uptake cases and by a factor of ∼3 for the hyperthyroid case.

CONCLUSIONS

It was determined that for all modeled cases, the DTC case yielded the lowest external dose rates, whereas the hyperthyroid case yielded the highest dose rates. In estimating external dose to members of the public from patients with (131)I therapy, consideration must be given to (patient- and case-specific) administered (131)I activities and duration of exposure for a more complete estimate. The method implemented here included a detailed calculation model, which provides a means to determine dose rate estimates for a range of scenarios. The method was demonstrated for variations of three scenarios, showing how dose rates are expected to vary with uptake, voiding pattern, and patient location.

Synergic combination of the sol-gel method with dip coating for plasmonic devices

Biosensing technologies based on plasmonic nanostructures have recently attracted significant attention due to their small dimensions, low-cost and high sensitivity but are often limited in terms of affinity, selectivity and stability. Consequently, several methods have been employed to functionalize plasmonic surfaces used for detection in order to increase their stability. Herein, a plasmonic surface was modified through a controlled, silica platform, which enables the improvement of the plasmonic-based sensor functionality. The key processing parameters that allow for the fine-tuning of the silica layer thickness on the plasmonic structure were studied. Control of the silica coating thickness was achieved through a combined approach involving sol-gel and dip-coating techniques. The silica films were characterized using spectroscopic ellipsometry, contact angle measurements, atomic force microscopy and dispersive spectroscopy. The effect of the use of silica layers on the optical properties of the plasmonic structures was evaluated. The obtained results show that the silica coating enables surface protection of the plasmonic structures, preserving their stability for an extended time and inducing a suitable reduction of the regeneration time of the chip.

Simultaneous recovery of vanadium and nickel from power plant fly-ash: optimization of parameters using response surface methodology

Simultaneous recovery of vanadium (V) and nickel (Ni), which are classified as two of the most hazardous metal species from power plant heavy fuel fly-ash, was studied using a hydrometallurgical process consisting of acid leaching using sulfuric acid. Leaching parameters were investigated and optimized in order to maximize the recovery of both vanadium and nickel. The independent leaching parameters investigated were liquid to solid ratio (S/L) (5-12.5 wt.%), temperature (45-80 °C), sulfuric acid concentration (5-25 v/v%) and leaching time (1-5h). Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the process parameters. The most effective parameter on the recovery of both elements was found to be temperature and the least effective was time for V and acid concentration for Ni. Based on the results, optimum condition for metals recovery (actual recovery of ca.94% for V and 81% for Ni) was determined to be solid to liquid ratio of 9.15 wt.%, temperature of 80 °C, sulfuric acid concentration of 19.47 v/v% and leaching time of 2h. The maximum V and Ni predicted recovery of 91.34% and 80.26% was achieved.

Optical Sensitivity Gain in Silica-Coated Plasmonic Nanostructures

Ultrathin films of silica realized by sol-gel synthesis and dip-coating techniques were successfully applied to predefined metal/polymer plasmonic nanostructures to spectrally tune their resonance modes and to increase their sensitivity to local refractive index changes. Plasmon resonance spectral shifts up to 100 nm with slope efficiencies of ∼8 nm/nm for increasing layer thickness were attained. In the ultrathin layer regime (<10 nm), which could be reached by suitable dilution of the silica precursors and optimization of the deposition speed, the sensitivity of the main plasmonic resonance to refractive index changes in aqueous solution could be increased by over 50% with respect to the bare plasmonic chip. Numerical simulations supported experimental data and unveiled the mechanism responsible for the optical sensitivity gain, proving an effective tool in the design of high-performance plasmonic sensors.

Charge separation in Pt-decorated CdSe@CdS octapod nanocrystals

We synthesize colloidal CdSe@CdS octapod nanocrystals decorated with Pt domains, resulting in a metal-semiconductor heterostructure. We devise a protocol to control the growth of Pt on the CdS surface, realizing both a selective tipping and a non-selective coverage. Ultrafast optical spectroscopy, particularly femtosecond transient absorption, is employed to correlate the dynamics of optical excitations with the nanocrystal morphology. We find two regimes for capture of photoexcited electrons by Pt domains: a slow capture after energy relaxation in the semiconductor, occurring in tipped nanocrystals and resulting in large spatial separation of charges, and an ultrafast capture of hot electrons occurring in nanocrystals covered in Pt, where charge separation happens faster than energy relaxation and Auger recombination. Besides the relevance for fundamental materials science and control at the nanoscale, our nanocrystals may be employed in solar photocatalysis.

Experimental investigation of the mechanical stiffness of periodic framework-patterned elastomers

Recent advances in the cataloguing of three-dimensional nets mean a systematic search for framework structures with specific properties is now feasible. Theoretical arguments about the elastic deformation of frameworks suggest characteristics of mechanically isotropic networks. We explore these concepts on both isotropic and anisotropic networks by manufacturing porous elastomers with three different periodic net geometries. The blocks of patterned elastomers are subjected to a range of mechanical tests to determine the dependence of elastic moduli on geometric and topological parameters. We report results from axial compression experiments, three-dimensional X-ray computed tomography imaging and image-based finite-element simulations of elastic properties of framework-patterned elastomers.

Interface properties of organic para-hexaphenyl/α-sexithiophene heterostructures deposited on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite

It was recently reported, that heterostructures of para-hexaphenyl (p-6P) and α-sexithiophene (6T) deposited on muscovite mica exhibit the intriguing possibility to prepare lasing nanofibers of tunable emission wavelength. For p-6P/6T heterostructures, two different types of 6T emission have been observed, namely, the well-known red emission of bulk 6T crystals and additionally a green emission connected to the interface between p-6P and 6T. In this study, the origin of the green fluorescence is investigated by photoelectron spectroscopy (PES). As a prerequisite, it is necessary to prepare structurally similar organic crystals on a conductive surface, which leads to the choice of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) as a substrate. The similarity between p-6P/6T heterostructures on muscovite mica and on HOPG is evidenced by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning force microscopy (SFM), and optical spectroscopy. PES measurements show that the interface between p-6P and 6T crystals is sharp on a molecular level without any sign of interface dipole formation or chemical interaction between the molecules. We therefore conclude that the different emission colors of the two 6T phases are caused by different types of molecular aggregation.

The new VARSKIN 4 photon skin dosimetry model

A new photon skin dosimetry model, described here, was developed as the basis for the enhanced VARSKIN 4 thin tissue dosimetry code. The model employs a point-kernel method that accounts for charged particle build-up, photon attenuation and off-axis scatter. Early comparisons of the new model against Monte Carlo particle transport simulations show that VARSKIN 4 is highly accurate for very small sources on the skin surface, although accuracy at shallow depths is compromised for radiation sources that are on clothing or otherwise elevated from the skin surface. Comparison results are provided for a one-dimensional point source, a two-dimensional disc source and three-dimensional sphere, cylinder and slab sources. For very small source dimensions and sources in contact with the skin, comparisons reveal that the model is highly predictive. With larger source dimensions, air gaps or the addition of clothing between the source and skin; however, VARSKIN 4 yields over-predictions of dose by as much as a factor of 2 to 3. These cursory Monte Carlo comparisons confirm that significant accuracy improvements beyond the previous version were achieved for all geometries. Improvements were obtained while retaining the VARSKIN characteristic user convenience and rapid performance.

Color tuning of nanofibers by periodic organic-organic hetero-epitaxy

We report on the epitaxial growth of periodic para-hexaphenyl (p-6P)/α-sexi-thiophene (6T) multilayer heterostructures on top of p-6P nanotemplates. By the chosen approach, 6T molecules are forced to align parallel to the p-6P template molecules, which yields highly polarized photoluminescence (PL)-emission of both species. The PL spectra show that the fabricated multilayer structures provide optical emission from two different 6T phases, interfacial 6T molecules, and 3-dimensional crystallites. By a periodical deposition of 6T monolayers and p-6P spacers it is demonstrated that the strongly polarized spectral contribution of interfacial 6T can be precisely controlled and amplified. By analyzing the PL emission of both 6T phases as a function of p-6P spacer thickness (Δd(p-6P)) we have determined a critical value of Δd(p-6P )≈ 2.73 nm where interfacial 6T runs into saturation and the surplus of 6T starts to cluster in 3-dimensional crystallites. These results are further substantiated by UPS and XRD measurements. Moreover, it is demonstrated by morphological investigations, provided by scanning force microscopy and fluorescence microscopy, that periodical deposition of 6T and p-6P leads to a significant improvement of homogeneity in PL-emission and morphology of nanofibers. Photoluminescence excitation experiments in combination with time-resolved photoluminescence demonstrate that the spectral emission of the organic multilayer nanofibers is dominated by a resonant energy transfer from p-6P host- to 6T guest-molecules. The sensitization time of the 6T emission in the 6T/p-6P multilayer structures depends on the p-6P spacer thickness, and can be explained by well separated layers of host-guest molecules obtained by organic-organic heteroepitaxy. The spectral emission and consequently the fluorescent color of the nanofibers can be efficiently tuned from the blue via white to the yellow-green spectral range.

Charged excitons, Auger recombination and optical gain in CdSe/CdS nanocrystals

CdSe/CdS colloidal nanocrystals are members of a novel class of light-emitting nanoparticles with remarkable optical properties such as suppressed fluorescence blinking and enhanced emission from multiexciton states. These properties have been linked to the suppression of non-radiative Auger recombination. In this work we employ ultrafast spectroscopy techniques to identify optical signatures of neutral and charged excitonic and multiexcitonic states. We show that Auger recombination of biexcitons is not suppressed, while we observe optical gain and amplified spontaneous emission from multiexciton states and from long-lived charged-exciton states.

Circular dichroism in biological photonic crystals and cubic chiral nets

Nature provides impressive examples of chiral photonic crystals, with the notable example of the cubic so-called srs network (the label for the chiral degree-three network modeled on SrSi2) or gyroid structure realized in wing scales of several butterfly species. By a circular polarization analysis of the band structure of such networks, we demonstrate strong circular dichroism effects: The butterfly srs microstructure, of cubic I4(1)32 symmetry, shows significant circular dichroism for blue to ultraviolet light, that warrants a search for biological receptors sensitive to circular polarization. A derived synthetic structure based on four like-handed silicon srs nets exhibits a large circular polarization stop band of a width exceeding 30%. These findings offer design principles for chiral photonic devices.

Organic-organic heteroepitaxy of red-, green-, and blue-emitting nanofibers

Self-assembly processes and organic-organic heteroepitaxy are powerful techniques to obtain highly ordered molecular aggregates. Here we demonstrate that combining both methods allows not only to fabricate highly crystalline and uniaxially oriented self-assembled nanofibers but also to tune their polarized emission. We show that submonolayer coverage of sexithiophene on top of para-sexiphenyl nanofibers is sufficient to change their emission color from blue to green. Triband emission in the red, green, and blue is generated in nanofibers with thicker sexithiophene coverage, where layers of co-oriented crystals are separated by green-emitting molecular sheets.
