COVID and nutrition: A machine learning perspective

A self-report questionnaire survey was conducted online to collect big data from over 16000 Iranian families (who were the residents of 1000 urban and rural areas of Iran). The resulting data storage contained over 1 M records of data and over 1G records of automatically inferred information. Based on this data storage, a series of machine learning experiments was conducted to investigate the relationship between nutrition and the risk of contracting COVID-19. With highly accurate scores, the findings strongly suggest that foods and water sources containing certain natural bioactive and phytochemical agents may help to reduce the risk of apparent COVID-19 infection.

Some natural hypomethylating agents in food, water and environment are against distribution and risks of COVID-19 pandemic: Results of a big-data research

OBJECTIVE

This study analyzes the effects of lifestyle, nutrition, and diets on the status and risks of apparent (symptomatic) COVID-19 infection in Iranian families.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A relatively extensive questionnaire survey was conducted on more than 20,000 Iranian families (residing in more than 1000 different urban and rural areas in the Islamic Republic of Iran) to collect the big data of COVID-19 and develop a lifestyle dataset. The collected big data included the records of lifestyle effects (e.g. nutrition, water consumption resources, physical exercise, smoking, age, gender, health and disease factors, etc.) on the status of COVID-19 infection in families (i.e. residents of homes). Therefore, an online self-reported questionnaire was used in this retrospective observational study to analyze the effects of lifestyle factors on the COVID-19 risks. The data collection process spanned from May 10, 2020 to March 19, 2021 by selecting 132 samples from more than 40 different social network communities.

RESULTS

The research results revealed that food and water sources, which contain some natural hypomethylating agents, mitigated the risks of apparent (symptomatic) COVID-19 infection. Furthermore, the computations on billions of permutations of nutrition conditions and dietary regime items, based on the data collected from people's diets and infection status, showed that there were many dietary conditions alleviating the risks of apparent (symptomatic) COVID-19 infection by 90%. However, some other diets tripled the infection risk.

CONCLUSION

Some natural hypomethylating agents in food, water, and environmental resources are against the spread and risks of COVID-19.

Dry Eye after Lasik for Myopia: Incidence and Risk Factors

PURPOSE

Patients frequently experience dry eye symptoms after laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and risk factors of dry eye after myopic LASIK.

METHODS

In this retrospective case series 190 eyes that underwent LASIK were examined for a dry eye syndrome. All patents were asymptomatic for dry eyes before surgery. Assessments included subjective complaints of dry eye, tear break-up time (TBUT), corneal staining, corneal sensitivity test, and Schirmer I test. All values were compared before and at 1 week and 1.3 and 6 months after surgery.

RESULTS

For the 190 eyes, chronic dry eye persisting 6 months or more after LASIK was diagnosed in 20 percent of the eyes. Mean patient age was 31 +/- 8 years. The risk for chronic dry eye was significantly associated with higher attempted refractive correction, greater ablation depth, and female sex (p=0.001). Subjective score for dryness was increased after LASIK. The greatest change from preoperative levels for all parameters was noted at 1 week. There were obvious decreases in TBUT and Schirmer value at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively relative to preoperative level (p<0.05). The Schirmer I test result was higher at 1 day but without statistical significance (p>0.05), but lower at 1 week and 3 and 6 months (p<0.05) after LASIK. Corneal sensitivity was decreased at 1 month and 3 months, and returned to the preoperative level at 6 months after LASIK. There was a statistically significant effect of age, sex, and mean spherical equivalent refraction on corneal sensitivity (p<0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

Patients undergoing LASIK for myopia develop dry eye with compromised tear function at least 6 months after surgery. Women and patients requiring higher refractive correction have an increased risk for developing dry eye.

Vertical strabismus cases and their surgical outcome in Yazd, Islamic Republic of Iran

Early diagnosis and management of strabismus is needed to avoid complications such as amblyopia. In this retrospective cohort study we reviewed the profile and surgical outcome of vertical strabismus patients attending a clinic in Yazd city in the Islamic Republic of Iran. From the medical files of 265 patients, 19.2% were found to have pure vertical deviation and 80.8% had combined horizontal and vertical strabismus. Congenital causes were recorded for 83.0% of cases and 24.9% had a family history of strabismus. Hypertropia (91.7%) was more common than hypotropia (8.3%). There was a statistically significant relationship between age at onset and vertical strabismus. Female patients had a higher rate of congenital vertical strabismus than did male patients. There was no significant association between surgery outcomes and sex or age of onset of strabismus. Early diagnosis and management in affected families and screening ofpatientswith strabismus family history is needed.

Subconjunctival bevacizumab injection in treatment of pterygium

This study determined the clinical effect of subconjunctival administration of bevacizumab in patients with primary and recurrent pterygium. The study was an off-label, single-dosing, interventional case series involving 22 patients with primary and recurrent pterygium. They received subconjunctival bevacizumab (0.2 cc). Pterygium vascularity and thickness was graded. The size of the pterygium (measured by surface area in cm2) was recorded from baseline to 12 weeks, after injection. Treatment-related complications and adverse events were reported. The main outcome of measurements was the change in size, vascularity, thickness, color intensity. There were 15 males (68.2%) and 7 females (31.8%) of 22 patients with a mean age of 45.5 years (SD 11.68 years). One cases didn't cooperate, and excluded. There was a significant difference in the mean surface area of pterygium at different intervals (P < 0.05) and the size of pterygium was reduced. On comparison of the mean pterygium size, there was no significant difference between men and women (P >0.05). There was a significant reduction in the mean pterygium size of patients younger than 45 years in comparison to those older than 45 years after three month (P =0.037), but after 6 months, this difference was not significant (P = 0.338). Average changes in pterygium size for both eyes were not different. The reduction of color intensity in both eyes was significant (P =0.031). Subconjuctival bevacizumab injection is useful in management of patients with primary and recurrent pterygium without significant local or systemic adverse effects.

Corneal topographic changes in healthy siblings of patients with keratoconus

AIM

To describe the involvement in relatives of keratoconus (KCN) patients with corneal topography map.

METHODS

A total of 150 siblings of 300 eyes of 75 KCN patients referred to corneal clinic were studied and experienced complete slit-lamp, refraction examinations and topographic cornea maps provided by videophotoker-atography. ANOVA, Fisher exact and Chi-square tests performed to compare of results.

RESULTS

Of 150 siblings, 56% were female and 44% were male with average age of 21 (range 15-39) years. KCN and suspect KCN diagnosed in 12.3% and 6.6% respectively. The central keratometry (CK) was 46.5±4.51 dioptr (D) in KCN and 45.66±1.52D in suspect KCN. Inferior-superior value (I-S) was 3.51±2.5D in KCN and 1.56±1.22D in suspect KCN. In KCN condition the oval pattern was 67.6% (n=25) and Round pattern detected 32.4% (n=12). In suspect KCN these patterns detected 90% and 10% respectively. Refractive errors in KCN were -7.5 to +1.25 dioptr (-1.25±1.83), in suspect KCN 0.45 to -4.2 dioptr (-0.68±0.76) and in healthy group 2.75 to -7.5 dioptr (-0.6±1.12). Astigmatism was mild in 22.7%, moderate and sever astigmatism in 18.3% in KCN and suspect KCN CONCLUSION: Increasing KCN condition in healthy siblings of KCN patients shows require to screening plan to early diagnose and cautionly treatment of contact lens in these individuals.
