The risk of neuro-orthopaedic malformations following in-vitro fertilization

The purpose of this study was to assess the risk of neuro-orthopaedic malformations after in-vitro fertilization. We compared the prevalence of neuro-orthopaedic malformations in two groups of pregnancies conceived either naturally or by in-vitro fertilization, and used multivariate analysis to study the impact of each variable. The results showed a prevalence of 0.89% neuro-orthopaedic malformations in the in-vitro fertilization cohort and 0.32% in the natural conception cohort. The three times greater risk of malformations in the in-vitro fertilization cohort was reduced after adjustment to other variables. We concluded that the increased risk of neuro-orthopaedic malformations after in-vitro fertilization is not due to the technique itself but rather to factors associated with it.

[Delayed delivery. Two cases, and review of the literature]

Delayed deliveries are rarely encountered in multiple pregnancies. They are useful in case of premature fetus. We report two case of delayed delivery; the first one of 23 days in a twin pregnancy, and the second one of 4 days in a triplet pregnancy. In both cases, the first delivered fetus died, and the later one or ones survived. Delayed delivery is a good management practice for multiple pregnancies in case of prematurity if no contraindications exist.

[Vertebral hemangioma symptomatic during pregnancy. A case report and review of the literature]

Vertebral hemangioma is a relatively frequent but rarely symptomatic tumor. Physiologic changes during pregnancy may lead to spinal cord compression due to tumor expansion. We report a case of vertebral hemangioma during pregnancy: a 28-year-old woman, third trimester, third gestation, consulted for paraplegia of rapid onset; Magnetic resonance imaging showed a lesion of the 9th thoracic vertebra; a cesarean section was done, followed by laminectomy with partial symptom relief; pathology showed a benign vertebral hemangioma and treatment was completed with radiotherapy.

[Primary choriocarcinoma of the cervix]

We report a case of primary choriocarcinoma of the cervix in which the patient died 9 months later. The treatment consisted to administer 5 cycles of chemotherapy pre-operatively and a colpohysterectomy. The pathogeny is a cervical migration of trophoblastics cells after a normal or molar pregnancy which degenerate to choriocarcinoma.
