Mercury Sulfide Dimorphism in Thioarsenate Glasses

Crystalline mercury sulfide exists in two drastically different polymorphic forms in different domains of the P,T-diagram: red chain-like insulator α-HgS, stable below 344 °C, and black tetrahedral narrow-band semiconductor β-HgS, stable at higher temperatures. Using pulsed neutron and high-energy X-ray diffraction, we show that these two mercury bonding patterns are present simultaneously in mercury thioarsenate glasses HgS-As2S3. The population and interconnectivity of chain-like and tetrahedral dimorphous forms determine both the structural features and fundamental glass properties (thermal, electronic, etc.). DFT simulations of mercury species and RMC modeling of high-resolution diffraction data provide additional details on local Hg environment and connectivity implying the (HgS2/2)m oligomeric chains (1 ≤ m ≤ 6) are acting as a network former while the HgS4/4-related mixed agglomerated units behave as a modifier.

Enhancement of sum frequency generation near the photonic band gap edge under the quasiphase matching conditions

We analyze theoretically and study experimentally the mechanisms of enhancement of the sum frequency and second harmonic generation in a finite one-dimensional photonic band gap structure with second order nonlinearity under Bragg diffraction conditions. It is shown that, near the photonic band gap edge, the efficiency of conversion in sum frequency and second harmonic generation processes can be significantly enhanced if two conditions are fulfilled simultaneously: grating assisted phase matching, or quasiphase matching, and an increase of the electromagnetic field density at the fundamental frequencies near the photonic band edges. The role of each mechanism is discussed.

Compression of femtosecond laser pulses in thin one-dimensional photonic crystals

We demonstrate experimentally the effect of compression of femtosecond laser pulses in thin (a few micrometers) one-dimensional photonic crystal. We show that the compression effect is reasonably described by the linear dispersion properties of the photonic crystal itself and the quadratic dispersion approximation cannot be efficiently used for the description of interaction of the femtosecond laser pulses with the thin photonic crystal. For given parameters of the femtosecond pulse it leads to the existence of the optimal dimension of the photonic crystal from the point of view of the compression efficiency. Due to the wide spectral width of the femtosecond laser pulses the high-order dispersion effects play an important role in pulse propagation in photonic crystals and as a result the pulse compression occurs for both positive and negative signs of chirp of the incoming femtosecond pulses.

Enhancement of second-harmonic generation with femtosecond laser pulses near the photonic band edge for different polarizations of incident light

We present experimental evidence of enhancement of second-harmonic generation as a result of an increase of the fundamental-field energy density within a multilayer structure near the photonic band edge.

The use of Daphnia magna for detection of okadaic acid in mussel extracts

Okadaic acid (OA), the main toxin responsible for diarrheic shellfish poisoning (DSP) has toxicity for Daphnia magna (EC50 = 15 +/- 1.8 micrograms/l). A Daphnia bioassay was developed and used to analyse okadaic acid in mussel extracts. A linear correlation was found between OA concentration determined by the Daphnia bioassay and by HPLC assay (r = 0.85; p < 0.001). The Daphnia bioassay can measure OA levels 10 times below the threshold of the mouse bioassay method. It is an inexpensive sensitive tool which can be used in replacement of mouse bioassay for the screening of OA and some co-extracting toxins in mussel extracts.

Short-time cytotoxicity of mussel extracts: a new bioassay for okadaic acid detection

Okadaic acid (OA), the main toxin responsible for diarrhoeic shellfish poisoning (DSP) has high cytotoxicity for KB cell cultures (apparent after 3 hr of contact), facilitating rapid detection in contaminated mussels. We developed a method to determine the minimal active concentration (MAC) based on direct microscopic study of toxin-induced changes in cell morphology. A high correlation was found between the MAC of tested extracts and corresponding OA concentrations in mussel hepatopancreas as measured by high performance liquid chromatography. This technique is rapid and reproducible and does not require the use of living animals.
