Phantom-based prospective analysis of the accuracy of photo registration technology in electromagnetic navigation of the frontal skull base

OBJECTIVE

This prospective study compared the accuracy of two different company-specific registration methods (Fiagon GmbH, Hennigsdorf, Germany) in the electromagnetic navigation of the frontal skull base. A newly developed photo registration technology (Fiagon tracey©) promises an increase in accuracy and user-friendliness, but there is no phantom-based prospective study comparing the new method with the classic approach of tactile surface registration.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A phantom skull was prepared with 27 markers in the sagittal, axial and coronary planes, and their reference coordinates were determined using a navigational CT (low dose, slice 0.6 mm). Subsequently, 20 runs of automatic photo registration and tactile surface registration were carried out, and the resulting marker coordinates were compared with the reference coordinates. The target registration error (TRE) of the 27 markers was assessed and compared between the two methods using a 2-factor ANOVA with repeated measures.

RESULTS

The mean TRE using surface registration was 1.97 mm ± 0.57, while the mean TRE of the automatic photo registration was 1.54 mm ± 0.24 (p < 0.001). In a subgroup analysis limited to markers in anatomical regions of clinical relevance in terms of paranasal sinus surgery, the mean TRE for the photo registration procedure can even be reduced to 1.29 mm (± 0.43) compared to tactile registration (1.80 mm; ±0.50; p=0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

Photo registration is a promising new technology in the field of electromagnetic navigation in paranasal sinus surgery. This prospective phantom-based study showed that the photo registration method achieves a significantly lower target registration error (1.29 mm) compared to the surface-based tactile registration procedure (1.80 mm).

VELOCITY-RESOLVED [C ii] EMISSION AND [C ii]/FIR MAPPING ALONG ORION WITH HERSCHEL

We present the first ~7.5'×11.5' velocity-resolved (~0.2 km s^-1) map of the [C ii] 158 μm line toward the Orion molecular cloud 1 (OMC 1) taken with the Herschel/HIFI instrument. In combination with far-infrared (FIR) photometric images and velocity-resolved maps of the H41α hydrogen recombination and CO J=2-1 lines, this data set provides an unprecedented view of the intricate small-scale kinematics of the ionized/PDR/molecular gas interfaces and of the radiative feedback from massive stars. The main contribution to the [C ii] luminosity (~85 %) is from the extended, FUV-illuminated face of the cloud (G₀>500, n_H>5×10³ cm^-3) and from dense PDRs (G≳10⁴, n_H≳10⁵ cm^-3) at the interface between OMC 1 and the H ii region surrounding the Trapezium cluster. Around ~15 % of the [C ii] emission arises from a different gas component without CO counterpart. The [C ii] excitation, PDR gas turbulence, line opacity (from [¹³C ii]) and role of the geometry of the illuminating stars with respect to the cloud are investigated. We construct maps of the L[C ii]/L_FIR and L_FIR/M_Gas ratios and show that L[C ii]/L_FIR decreases from the extended cloud component (~10^-2-10^-3) to the more opaque star-forming cores (~10^-3-10^-4). The lowest values are reminiscent of the "[C ii] deficit" seen in local ultra-luminous IR galaxies hosting vigorous star formation. Spatial correlation analysis shows that the decreasing L[C ii]/L_FIR ratio correlates better with the column density of dust through the molecular cloud than with L_FIR/M_Gas. We conclude that the [C ii] emitting column relative to the total dust column along each line of sight is responsible for the observed L[C ii]/L_FIR variations through the cloud.

Invited article: millimeter-wave bolometer array receiver for the Atacama pathfinder experiment Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (APEX-SZ) instrument

The Atacama pathfinder experiment Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (APEX-SZ) instrument is a millimeter-wave cryogenic receiver designed to observe galaxy clusters via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect from the 12 m APEX telescope on the Atacama plateau in Chile. The receiver contains a focal plane of 280 superconducting transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers instrumented with a frequency-domain multiplexed readout system. The bolometers are cooled to 280 mK via a three-stage helium sorption refrigerator and a mechanical pulse-tube cooler. Three warm mirrors, two 4 K lenses, and a horn array couple the TES bolometers to the telescope. APEX-SZ observes in a single frequency band at 150 GHz with 1' angular resolution and a 22' field-of-view, all well suited for cluster mapping. The APEX-SZ receiver has played a key role in the introduction of several new technologies including TES bolometers, the frequency-domain multiplexed readout, and the use of a pulse-tube cooler with bolometers. As a result of these new technologies, the instrument has a higher instantaneous sensitivity and covers a larger field-of-view than earlier generations of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich instruments. The TES bolometers have a median sensitivity of 890 μK(CMB)√s (NEy of 3.5 × 10(-4) √s). We have also demonstrated upgraded detectors with improved sensitivity of 530 μK(CMB)√s (NEy of 2.2 × 10(-4) √s). Since its commissioning in April 2007, APEX-SZ has been used to map 48 clusters. We describe the design of the receiver and its performance when installed on the APEX telescope.

A Submillimeter HCN Laser in IRC +10216

We report the detection of a strong submillimeter-wavelength HCN laser line at a frequency near 805 GHz toward the carbon star IRC +10216. This line, the J=9-8 rotational transition within the (0400) vibrationally excited state, is one of a series of HCN laser lines that were first detected in the laboratory in the early days of laser spectroscopy. Since its lower energy level is 4200 K above the ground state, the laser emission must arise from the innermost part of IRC +10216's circumstellar envelope. To better characterize this environment, we observed other, thermally emitting, vibrationally excited HCN lines and found that they, like the laser line, arise in a region of temperature approximately 1000 K that is located within the dust formation radius; this conclusion is supported by the line width of the laser. The (0400), J=9-8 laser might be chemically pumped and may be the only known laser (or maser) that is excited both in the laboratory and in space by a similar mechanism.

33SO2: Interstellar Identification and Laboratory Measurements

The rotational spectrum of 33S isotopically substituted sulfur dioxide, 33SO2, has been measured up to nearly 1 THz. The combined analysis of these new data together with the published line frequencies resulted in refined molecular constants, such as the rotational (A = 59856.4723(62) MHz, B = 10318.3012(15) MHz, C = 8780.1363(15) MHz) and centrifugal distortion constants which yielded precise frequency predictions. The carrier of six previously unidentified interstellar lines in the Caltech molecular line survey in the 325-360 GHz band could be assigned to 33SO2. Copyright 1997 Academic Press. A line survey of Orion KL from 325 to 360 GHz

We present a high-sensitivity spectral line survey of the high-mass star-forming region Orion KL in the 325-360 GHz frequency band. The survey was conducted at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. The sensitivity achieved is typically 0.1-0.5 K and is limited mostly by the sideband separation method utilized. We find 717 resolvable features consisting of 1004 lines, among which 60 are unidentified. The identified lines are due to 34 species and various isotopomers. Most of the unidentified lines are weak, and many of them most likely due to isotopomers or vibrationally or torsionally excited states of known species with unknown line frequencies, but a few reach the 2-5 K level. No new species have been identified, but we were able to strengthen evidence for the identification of ethanol in Orion and found the first nitrogen sulfide line in this source. The molecule dominating the integrated line emission is S02, which emits twice the intensity of CO, followed by SO, which is only slightly stronger than CO. In contrast, the largest number of lines is emitted from heavy organic rotors like HCOOCH3, CH3CH2CN, and CH3OCH3, but their contribution to the total flux is unimportant. CH3OH is also very prominent, both in the number of lines and in integrated flux. An interesting detail of this survey is the first detection of vibrationally excited HCN in the v2 = 2 state, 2000 K above ground. Clearly this is a glimpse into the very inner part of the Orion hot core.
