A hybrid monitoring and modelling approach to assess the contribution of sources of glyphosate and AMPA in large river catchments

Large river catchments with mixed land use capture pesticides from many sources, and degradable pesticides are converted during downstream transport. Unravelling the contribution of pesticide source and the effect of degradation processes is a challenge in such areas. However, insight and understanding of the sources is important for targeted management, especially when water is abstracted from the river for drinking water production. The river Meuse is such a case. A long-term monitoring data set was applied in a modelling approach for assessing the contribution of waste water treatment plants (WWTPs) and tributaries (sub-basins) to surface water contamination, and to evaluate the effect of decay on the downstream concentrations of glyphosate and AMPA at the point of drinking water abstraction. The results show that WWTPs are important contributors for glyphosate and AMPA in large river catchments with mixed land uses. In the studied area, the river Meuse in the Netherlands, the relative contribution of WWTP effluents is above 29% for glyphosate and around 12% for AMPA. Local industries are found to be potentially big contributors of AMPA. Glyphosate entering the river system is gradually converted to AMPA and other degradation productions, which results in downstream loads that are considerably lower than the sum of all influxes. In summer when the travel time is longer due to lower discharge, the first order decay of glyphosate in the river Meuse is estimated to result in about 50% reduction of the downstream glyphosate concentrations over a river stretch of 250km. The contribution of glyphosate decay to the observed AMPA concentrations ranges between 2% and 10%. Contributions are sensitive to seasonal variations in discharge that influence the concentrations through dilution and degradation.

Predicting longevity of iron permeable reactive barriers using multiple iron deactivation models

In this study we investigate the model uncertainties involved in predicting long-term permeable reactive barrier (PRB) remediation efficiency based on a lab-scale column experiment under accelerated flow conditions. A PRB consisting of 20% iron and 80% sand was simulated in a laboratory-scale column and contaminated groundwater was pumped into the column for approximately 1 year at an average groundwater velocity of 3.7 E-1 m d(-1). Dissolved contaminants (PCE, TCE, cis-DCE, trans-DCE and VC) and inorganic (Ca(2+), Fe(2+), TIC and pH) concentrations were measured in groundwater sampled at different times and at eight different distances along the column. These measurements were used to calibrate a multi-component reactive transport model, which subsequently provided predictions of long-term PRB efficiency under reduced flow conditions (i.e., groundwater velocity of 1.4 E-3m d(-1)), representative of a field site of interest in this study. Iron reactive surface reduction due to mineral precipitation and iron dissolution was simulated using four different models. All models were able to reasonably well reproduce the column experiment measurements, whereas the extrapolated long-term efficiency under different flow rates was significantly different between the different models. These results highlight significant model uncertainties associated with extrapolating long-term PRB performance based on lab-scale column experiments. These uncertainties should be accounted for at the PRB design phase, and may be reduced by independent experiments and field observations aimed at a better understanding of reactive surface deactivation mechanisms in iron PRBs.

Self-inhibition can limit biologically enhanced TCE dissolution from a TCE DNAPL

Biodegradation of trichloroethene (TCE) near a Dense Non Aqueous Phase Liquid (DNAPL) can enhance the dissolution rate of the DNAPL by increasing the concentration gradient at the DNAPL-water interface. Two-dimensional flow-through sand boxes containing a TCE DNAPL and inoculated with a TCE dechlorinating consortium were set up to measure this bio-enhanced dissolution under anaerobic conditions. The total mass of TCE and daughter products in the effluent of the biotic boxes was 3-6 fold larger than in the effluent of the abiotic box. However, the mass of daughter products only accounted for 19-55% of the total mass of chlorinated compounds in the effluent, suggesting that bio-enhanced dissolution factors were maximally 1.3-2.2. The enhanced dissolution most likely primarily resulted from variable DNAPL distribution rather than biodegradation. Specific dechlorination rates previously determined in a stirred liquid medium were used in a reactive transport model to identify the rate limiting factors. The model adequately simulated the overall TCE degradation when predicted resident microbial numbers approached observed values and indicated an enhancement factor for TCE dissolution of 1.01. The model shows that dechlorination of TCE in the 2D box was limited due to the short residence time and the self-inhibition of the TCE degradation. A parameter sensitivity analysis predicts that the bio-enhanced dissolution factor for this TCE source zone can only exceed a value of 2 if the TCE self-inhibition is drastically reduced (when a TCE tolerant dehalogenating community is present) or if the DNAPL is located in a low-permeable layer with a small Darcy velocity.

Microbial processes as key drivers for metal (im)mobilization along a redox gradient in the saturated zone

Two sites representing different aquifer types, i.e., Dommel (sandy) and Flémalle (gravelly loam) along the Meuse River, have been selected to conduct microcosm experiments. Various conditions ranging from aerobic over nitrate- to sulphate reducing were imposed. For the sandy aquifer, nitrate reducing conditions predominated, which specifically in the presence of a carbon source led to pH increases and enhanced Zn removal. For the calcareous gravelly loam, sulphate reduction was dominant resulting in immobilization of both Zn and Cd. For both aquifer types and almost all redox conditions, higher arsenic concentrations were measured in the groundwater. Analyses of different specific microbial populations by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) revealed the dominance of denitrifiers for the Dommel site, while sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) were the prevailing population for all redox conditions in the Flémalle samples.

The dynamic water-sediment system: results from an intensive pesticide monitoring campaign

To gain insight into the dynamics of pesticides in the different compartments of a river system, an intensive monitoring campaign was set up. An extensive dataset is useful when planning to model the fate of pesticides in river systems. In this study we focus on the Nil, a small, hilly basin situated in the central part of Belgium. Two automatic samplers were placed in the river basin, i.e., one at the mouth and one upstream, taking composite samples of water and suspended solids. Undisturbed sediment samples were taken by means of a macro-core and immediately frozen with CO2-ice. The samples were sliced and analysed for pesticides in pore water and on sediment. The results of the study revealed the dynamics of the different compartments of a river system. The water compartment showed hourly variations in pesticide peak concentrations, regularly exceeding the standards. The amount of pesticides transported by suspended solids increased after a rainfall event. The concentration of pesticides in pore water, measured on a monthly basis, followed the trends of the water compartment remarkably well, but in a significantly lower concentration. These observations may be explained by combined diffusion, biodegradation and chemical reactions occurring in the water column and the sediment. Further insight into the importance of each of these processes can be gained by dynamic modelling, an approach that is currently being followed.

Characterisation and treatment of roads covered with zinc ashes, muffle furnace fragments and lead slags from former non-ferrous metal industries in Belgium

Zinc ashes, muffle furnace fragments and lead slags from non-ferrous industries were applied to pave roads in the North of Belgium. From an inventory it appeared that there are at least 490 km of such roads. In our survey the materials on these roads were characterised. The total metal concentration, the availability and the leaching as a function of time were determined. It appeared that these materials contain high concentrations of heavy metals, some of which are readily available. The high leaching of some metals makes them as such unsuitable as secondary construction material. Methods for the application of these materials for road construction were examined where the materials replaced part of the sand and gravel fraction in lean concrete and in bituminous mixtures, or where they replaced the sand in sand-cement mixtures, all these to be used for road foundations, cycle tracks, etc. When lead slags were applied in lean concrete, a material was obtained complying with the standards for secondary construction materials and with sufficient compressive strength for road foundations. When zinc ashes or muffle fragments were used to replace sand in sand-cement mixtures, again a suitable construction material was obtained. The other combinations tried out were rather unsuccessful, because of high metal leaching and/or poor compressive strength.

Grid lysimeter study of steady state chloride transport in two Spodosol types using TDR and wick samplers

Solute transport in soils is affected by soil layering and soil-specific morphological properties. We studied solute transport in two sandy Spodosols: a dry Spodosol developed under oxidizing conditions of relatively deep groundwater and a wet Spodosol under periodically reducing conditions above a shallow groundwater table. The wet Spodosol is characterized by a diffuse and heterogeneous humus-B-horizon (i.e., Spodic horizon), whereas the dry Spodosol has a sharp Spodic horizon. Drainage fluxes were moderately variable with a coefficient of variation (CV) of 25% in the wet Spodosol and 17% in the dry Spodosol. Solute transport in 1-m-long and 0.8-m-diameter soil columns was investigated using spatial averages of solute concentrations measured by a network of 36 Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) probes. In the dry Spodosol, solute transport evolves from stochastic-convective to convective-dispersive at a depth of 0.25 m, coinciding with the depth of the Spodic horizon. Chloride breakthrough at the bottom of the soil columns was adequately well predicted by a convection-dispersion model. In the wet Spodosol, solute transport was heterogeneous over the entire depth of the column. Chloride breakthrough at 1 m depth was predicted best using a stochastic-convective transport model. The TDR sampling volume of 36 probes was too small to capture the heterogeneous flow and concomitant transport in the wet Spodosol.

Aging effects on cadmium transport in undisturbed contaminated sandy soil columns

Limited information is available on the effects of contaminant aging (i.e., the contact time of Cd with the soil) on Cd transport in soils. We conducted displacement experiments in which indigenous Cd and freshly applied Cd were leached simultaneously from undisturbed samples of three Spodosol horizons. Sorption of Cd was described using Freundlich isotherms, whereas transport was described as a convection-dispersion process. Parameter optimization analysis using a mobile-immobile transport model applied to nonsorbing tracer displacement data showed that 16 to 22% of the water in the columns was immobile. The low dimensionless mass transfer coefficients in the mobile-immobile model were indicative of diffusion-limited transfer between mobile and immobile water, and hence physical nonequilibrium. A two-site kinetic sorption model could be fitted closely to breakthrough curves of the non-aged Cd for three soil horizons. No conclusive evidence was found that contaminant aging in soil affects cadmium transport. On the one hand, predictions of aged Cd leaching, using parameters estimated from displacement experiments with nonaged Cd, differed from those for the aged Cd in the E horizon. On the other hand, no meaningful differences in transport behavior between aged and non-aged Cd were found for the humus Bh and Bh/C horizons. The two-site kinetic rate coefficient alphac was found to depend on water flux, further indicating that mass transfer between sorption sites and the liquid is limited by diffusion rather than by kinetic sorption.
