Alexithymia and the Evaluation of Emotionally Valenced Scenes

Alexithymia is a personality trait characterized by difficulties identifying and describing feelings (DIF and DDF) and an externally oriented thinking (EOT) style. The primary aim of the present study was to investigate links between alexithymia and the evaluation of emotional scenes. We also investigated whether viewers' evaluations of emotional scenes were better predicted by specific alexithymic traits or by individual differences in sensory processing sensitivity (SPS). Participants (N = 106) completed measures of alexithymia and SPS along with a task requiring speeded judgments of the pleasantness of 120 moderately arousing scenes. We did not replicate laterality effects previously described with the scene perception task. Compared to those with weak alexithymic traits, individuals with moderate-to-strong alexithymic traits were less likely to classify positively valenced scenes as pleasant and were less likely to classify scenes with (vs. without) implied motion (IM) in a way that was consistent with normative scene valence ratings. In addition, regression analyses confirmed that reporting strong EOT and a tendency to be easily overwhelmed by busy sensory environments negatively predicted classification accuracy for positive scenes, and that both DDF and EOT negatively predicted classification accuracy for scenes depicting IM. These findings highlight the importance of accounting for stimulus characteristics and individual differences in specific traits associated with alexithymia and SPS when investigating the processing of emotional stimuli. Learning more about the links between these individual difference variables may have significant clinical implications, given that alexithymia is an important, transdiagnostic risk factor for a wide range of psychopathologies.

Alexithymic traits predict the speed of classifying non-literal statements using nonverbal cues

There is increasing interest in exploring the impact of alexithymia on interpersonal interactions. This study explored relationships between alexithymia and the complex mentalising skills needed to infer how a speaker intended a non-literal statement to be understood. A sample of university students (N = 70) viewed videotaped exchanges and attempted to classify remarks as literal, sarcastic, jocular, or white lies. Alexithymia was not associated with less consistent labelling of statement types. However, after accounting for variance due to verbal intelligence and sex, we found that those who reported more difficulties identifying their own feelings needed more time to distinguish between different statement types on the basis of the speaker's nonverbal cues. These findings highlight the value of examining response times, and of accounting for individual differences in specific alexithymic traits, when assessing social perception and cognition.

Temporal integration limits of stereovision in reaching and grasping

Even though there have been extensive investigations of the temporal integration limits of binocular vision in perceptual tasks, relatively little is known about temporal integration limits during the completion of visuomotor tasks. To assess the temporal integration limits of binocular disparity within the action domain, accuracy of reach kinematics in a reaching and grasping task under continuous binocular and monocular viewing conditions were compared with those obtained under alternating monocular viewing conditions with interocular delays ranging from 14 to 58 ms. Even the shortest of the interocular delays resulted in larger grip apertures than those in the continuous monocular and binocular viewing conditions. The short temporal integration interval of stereovision obtained in this study cannot be accounted for by differential visual feedback in the binocular and interocular delay conditions, nor is it likely to be a consequence of visual disruption due to the interocular delays. Our findings suggest that the visuomotor system has little tolerance to interocular delay.

Ganglion cell loss and age-related visual loss: a cortical pooling analysis

PURPOSE

To evaluate the ability of the cortical pooling model to predict the effects of random, mild ganglion cell loss, we compared the predictions of the model with the age-related loss and variability in achromatic and chromatic contrast sensitivity.

METHODS

The relative sensitivity to small (0.5 degrees ) and large (3.0 degrees ) stimuli was compared in older (mean = 67 years, n = 27) and younger (mean = 23 years, n = 32) adults. Contrast sensitivity for modulations along the luminance, equiluminant L-cone, and equiluminant S-cone axes was assessed at the fovea and at four peripheral locations (12 degrees ).

RESULTS

When the stimuli were large, threshold measurements obtained from all participants were reliable and well within the range of modulations along the chromatic axes that could be produced by the phosphors of the CRT. For the large stimuli, neither long- nor short-term variability increased as a function of age. Increasing the size of the stimulus did not decrease the magnitude of the age-related losses when the stimulus was chromatic, and visual losses observed with large chromatic stimuli were not different from those obtained with small achromatic stimuli. Moreover, chromatic contrast sensitivity assessments identified significant visual losses in four individuals who were not identified by achromatic contrast sensitivity assessments and only missed identifying one individual with significant losses in achromatic contrast sensitivity.

CONCLUSIONS

The declines in achromatic and chromatic sensitivity as a function of age (0.4-0.7 dB per decade) were similar to those obtained in previous studies of achromatic and chromatic perimetry and are consistent with the loss of retinal ganglion cells reported in histologic studies. The results of this study are consistent with the predictions the cortical pooling model makes for both variability and contrast sensitivity. These findings emphasize that selective visual impairments do not necessarily reflect preferential damage to a single ganglion cell class and that it is important to include the influence of higher cortical processing when quantifying the relation between ganglion cells and visual function.

Texture-orientation mechanisms pool colour and luminance contrast

Do texture-sensitive mechanisms operate separately on, or pool, luminance and colour contrast information? We addressed this question by measuring threshold-versus-amplitude functions for orientation-modulated (OM) gratings comprised of gabor elements defined by either colour or luminance contrast. In both the uncrossed (all elements in test and mask defined by either colour or luminance contrast) and crossed (equal mixtures of luminance and colour contrast in both test and mask) conditions, evidence of sub-threshold facilitation between test and mask was obtained. The sub-threshold facilitation in the crossed condition could not be accounted for by luminance artifacts in the ostensibly isoluminant gabors. The results are consistent with a single visual mechanism sensitive to OM textures that pools information from both the luminance and chromatic post-receptoral mechanisms.

On the interference of task-irrelevant hue variation on texture segmentation

Although natural images often include discordant information about object boundaries, the majority of research on texture segmentation has involved variation along a single dimension, e.g. colour, orientation, size. In this study, we examined orientation-based texture segmentation in the presence and absence of task-irrelevant colour variation. Previously, it had been shown that orientation-based texture segmentation was impaired if the elements, normally of one colour, were randomly allocated one of two colours (Morgan et al, 1992 Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, Series B 248 291-295). We found that this interference disappeared, however, when the spatial pattern of the colour variation was regular, as opposed to random, and when the elements were randomly positioned. We consider four models of how relevant and irrelevant texture information might combine to produce the interference effect, with special regard to these new findings. None of the models could account for the dependency of the interference effect on the spatial arrangement of colour and orientation in the texture. We suggest that inter-element separation and spatial-frequency selectivity are critical variables in the interference effect.

Chromatic contrast sensitivity: the role of absolute threshold and gain constant in differences between the fovea and the periphery

A model of foveal achromatic and chromatic sensitivity [Vision Res. 36, 1597 (1996)] was extended to the peripheral visual field. Threshold-versus-illuminance functions were analyzed to determine effects of eccentricity on absolute thresholds and gain constants of chromatic and luminance mechanisms. The resulting peripheral model successfully predicted peripheral contrast sensitivity as a function of wavelength, for both white and 500-nm backgrounds. We conclude that the short-wavelength-sensitive cone opponent mechanism may mediate thresholds in Sloan's notch in the normal periphery and that interpretation of reduced chromatic sensitivity in the periphery requires an explicit model of how eccentricity affects both the gain constant and the absolute threshold.

The aftereffect to relative motion does not show interocular transfer

The motion aftereffect is strongest after viewing a moving field embedded in a patterned stationary surround, which suggests that relative motion is an important signal for its generation. The contribution of relative motion to binocular aspects of the motion aftereffect was assessed. Subjects viewed uniformly moving random dots surrounded by a stationary random-dot annulus. These displays could be presented in a variety of combinations to each eye separately or to both eyes, during adaptation and test. It was found that, although the presence of relative motion during adaptation significantly extended the duration of the monocular motion aftereffect, it did not augment interocular transfer. The presence of stationary surround contours in the nonadapting eye did not influence the aftereffect in the adapting eye. The enhancement provided by stationary surround contours is largely dependent on their presence during adaptation. The presence or absence of surround contours during the test phase did not influence the duration of the aftereffect. These findings are consistent with previous suggestions that the motion aftereffect is, in part, the result of adaptation to relative motion that occurs relatively early in the visual pathway-before binocular integration.
