Abstract
An anthracene thiazole based Schiff base L was synthesized and employed for fluorescence switch-on detection of maleic acid in aqueous DMSO. The non-fluorescent L (10-5 M) showed an instantaneous and selective fluorescence enhancement at 506 nm upon interaction with maleic acid (10-5 M). Other potential carboxylic acids (10-5 M), such as malic acid, citric acid, acetic acid, cinnamic acid, tartaric acid, succinic acid, fumaric acid, oxalic acid and malonic acid failed to alter the chromo-fluorogenic properties of L. Probe L can be employed to detect maleic acid down to 2.74 × 10-6 M. The probe L showed good linearity from 2.97 to 6.87 µM. Analytical utility of L was examined by detecting maleic acid in various food additives and drosophila larvae.

Abstract
Resistance to antibiotics/antibacterials/antifungals in pathogenic microbes has been developing over the past few decades and has recently become a commonplace public-health peril. Thus, alternative nontoxic potent antibiotic agents are covertly needed to control antibiotic-resistant outbreaks. In an effort to combat the challenges posed by the co-occurrence of multidrug resistance, two terpyridine ligands 4'-(4-N,N'-dimethylaminophenyl)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (L1) and 4'-(4-tolyl)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (L2) have been designed, prepared and confirmed their structure by spectral studies. Thereafter, antimicrobial assay was performed against gram positive and negative bacterial strains along with fungal strains. Both compounds L1 and L2 exhibited remarkable inhibitory activities against bacteria, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus at MIC values 6.25 and 3.125 µg/ml, respectively. In addition, in silico molecular docking studies were ascertained with bacterial DNA gyrase and fungal demethylase. Furthermore, both L1 and L2 could bind Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) protein and binding interaction has been studied with the help of UV-Visible and fluorescence spectroscopy. While fluorescence of BSA unperturbed in the presence of L2, an addition of L1 to the solution of BSA resulted significant quenching. The binding constant calculations at different temperature confirmed that the fluorescence quenching between BSA and L1 is predominantly static in nature. The toxicity of L1 and L2 was checked using Drosophila melanogaster. The toxicity analysis suggest both the dyes are non-cytotoxic in nature.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
This manuscript introduces a pyrene-based Schiff base L by reacting pyrenecarboxaldehyde with 2-aminothiazole in equimolar ratio. The ligand L was characterized by various spectral data and single crystal. The water sensing ability of L was examined in different organic solvents. The weakly emissive L in DMSO showed a fluorescence enhancement upon the addition of water. The water-induced fluorescence enhancement of L was occurred due to the combined effect of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon and suppression of photo-induced electron transfer (PET) process. Using L, the water in DMSO can be detected down to 0.50 wt% with a quantification limit of 1.52 wt%. The analytical novelty of the developed sensor L was validated by detecting moisture in a variety of raw food products.

Abstract
Cubic spinel CoCr2O4 has recently attained attention due to its multiferroic properties. However, the Co site substitution effect on the structural and magnetic properties has rarely been studied in thin film form. In this work, the structural and magnetic properties of Co1-x Ni x Cr2O4 (x= 0, 0.5) epitaxial thin films deposited on MgAl2O4 (100) and MgO (100) substrates to manipulate the nature of strain in the films using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique are presented. The epitaxial nature of the films was manifested through x-ray diffraction (XRD), reciprocal space mapping (RSM) and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) measurements. Raman measurements revealed a disappearance of characteristic A 1 g and F 2 g modes of the CoCr2O4 with increase in the Ni content. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) studies show a modification of the surface morphology upon Ni substitution. Magnetic measurements disclose that the ferrimagnetic Curie temperature (T C) of the CoCr2O4 in thin film grown on MgAl2O4 (100) and MgO (100) substrates were found to be 100.6 ± 0.5 K and 93.8 ± 0.2 K, respectively. With Ni substitution the T C values were found to be enhanced to 104.5 ± 0.4 K for MgAl2O4 (100) and 108.5 ± 0.6 K for MgO (100) substrates. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggests Cr3+ oxidation states in the films, while Co ions are present in a mixed Co2+/Co3+ oxidation state. The substitution of Ni at Co site significantly modifies the line shape of the core level as well as the valence band. Ni ions are also found to be in a mixed 2+/3+ oxidation state. O 1s core level display asymmetry related to possible defects like oxygen vacancies in the films.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Auditory brainstem implant (ABI), a standard technique in treatment of profound sensorineural hearing loss in patients with neurofibromatosis 2, is now being increasingly employed in children with congenital bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, as in Michele's deformity. A detailed knowledge of the relevant surgical anatomy of the lateral recess and its anatomical landmarks including the flocculus, the choroid plexus and the root entry zones of facial-vestibulocochlear and glossopharyngeal-vagus nerve complexes and their anatomical variants is mandatory, as it is the conduit for electrode array placement. The placement of electrode may be eased or impeded by these variations. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-two children with congenital bilateral hearing loss underwent surgery through retromastoid suboccipital approach for placement of auditory brainstem implant. The preoperative anatomy was reviewed in detail during procedure and again later in the operative videos. RESULTS The flocculus was classified into four grades based on its anatomy and relations. Among these, grade II (11 children) was the commonest while grade IV (five children) was least common. Choroid plexus was variable in size across grades of flocculus. Difficulty in defining the anatomy was significantly more (p value = 0.003) in the group with higher grade flocculus (grade III and IV) than in lower grade flocculus (grade I and II). CONCLUSION The flocculus in these patients is classifiable into one of the four grades and the surgical nuances such as difficulty in defining the anatomy for placement of ABI are dependent on the characteristics exhibited by the floccular anatomy and relations.

Abstract
We showed a phase transformation from high temperature hexagonal phase to most stable monoclinic phase of SrAl2O4by incorporating 20% of ZnO in ZnO and SrAl2O4composite (Singhet al.2014Dalton Transactions). The composite with monoclinic phase further showed the intense near band edge emission and defect band emission corresponding to ZnO without any signature of SrAl2O4in PL spectra. An energy band diagram responsible for defect band emission is proposed for the composites.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of TiO2 nanowires with high aspect ratio using a two step hydrothermal process using TiO2 nanoparticles and 10 M NaOH solvent at a reaction temperature of 180 degrees C. These nanowires are characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), micro-Raman and X-ray photo emission spectroscopy (XPS). Phase of the nanowires are found to be anatase, confirmed from both XRD and Raman spectroscopic measurements. High resolution electron microscopy (HREM) further supports the anatase structure and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) pattern indicate the single crystalline nature of the nanowires. Addition to these techniques, XPS and EDS refutes the presence of any impurity elements like Na as reported in the literatures. The electronic structures of the nanoparticles and nanowires are studied with maximum entropy method (MEM) using the XRD tools. Nanowires are found to be more ionic than the nanoparticles evidenced from the MEM simulations.

Abstract
We present a nanomechanical device, operating as a reprogrammable logic gate, and performing fundamental logic functions such as AND/OR and NAND/NOR. The logic function can be programmed (e.g., from AND to OR) dynamically, by adjusting the resonator's operating parameters. The device can access one of two stable steady states, according to a specific logic function; this operation is mediated by the noise floor which can be directly adjusted, or dynamically "tuned" via an adjustment of the underlying nonlinearity of the resonator, i.e., it is not necessary to have direct control over the noise floor. The demonstration of this reprogrammable nanomechanical logic gate affords a path to the practical realization of a new generation of mechanical computers.

Abstract
The effect of copper on survival, growth and feed intake of Indian major carp, Cirrhinus mrigala (Hamilton) fry (0.92 +/- 0.28 g) was studied for 60 days. Survival rates of the fish exposed to control (0.02), 0.10, 0.15 and 0.23 mg L(-1) copper were 100%, 83 +/- 3%, 58 +/- 6%, and 50 +/- 4%, respectively. Average daily growth was significantly (p < 0.05) lower at 0.15 and 0.23 mg L(-1) of copper. There was almost no growth at 0.23 mg L(-1) of copper. Feed intake rates reduced significantly (p < 0.05) at all the copper treatments. The copper accumulation in the fish increased with increasing concentrations of the metal.

Abstract
The kinetics and mechanism of the reduction of ferricytochrome c [Cyt c(III)] by substrates namely glutathione (GSH) and L-cysteine (L-cys) have been investigated spectrophotometrically employing [substrate]T >> [Cyt c(III)]T. The reaction exhibits first order dependence in [substrate]T and [Cyt c(III)]T. The pseudo-first order rate constant increases with an increase in pH, indicating that the conjugate base form of the HCyt c(III) is a better oxidant than the parent HCyt c(III). The electron transfer rate constants between the oxidants and GSH for both the k1 and k2 paths are found to be greater than that with L-cysteine. Hence, GSH is a better reductant of Cyt c(III) as compared to L-cysteine. A suitable mechanism has been proposed on the basis of experimental findings. The deprotonation constant for HCyt c(III) and the second order rate constants of k1 and k2 paths for the present reaction at 25 degrees C have been determined.

Abstract
Exposure of healthy wheat seeds (Triticum aestivum var Sonalika) to mild dose of cadmium (Cd(2+)) given as 50 microM CdCl(2) for 48 h and then washed off Cd(2+) offered resistance to the subsequent infection by Fusarium oxysporum inoculum. Seven days old seedlings having two primary leaves were aseptically inoculated with fungus, F. oxysporum (1 x 10(6)) spores. The seedlings pre-exposed to low level of Cd(2+) survived the Fusarium infection, while plantlets without Cd(2+) stress wilted and then perished due to Fusarium infection. The stress associated proteins induced by Cd(2+) (50 microM), F. oxysporum and by the co-stress (50 microM Cd(2+) and then with F. oxysporum) treatments were observed to be of same molecular weight (51 kDa). Antibody was raised against the purified Cd(2+)-stress associated protein (CSAP). Immuno-gold labeling of wheat seedling root tissue showed the presence of this CSAP in Cd(2+) pre-exposed and in co-stressed tissues and to be located predominantly on the inner linings of the cell membranes. We also observed that the anti-CSAP-antibody also labeled the root tissue of only Fusarium inoculated seedlings and the gold labeling was intensely located on the membrane. This cross-reaction of anti-CSAP suggests that Fusarium-induced stress protein (FISP) possibly has close homology to CSAP. We thus show for the first time the over expression of a high molecular mass protein by mild dose of Cd(2+) pre-exposure to wheat seeds which subsequently provided protection against Fusarium infection. This mode of resistance developed by an abiotic stress-causing agent against pathogen infection is novel.

Abstract
We report low-temperature measurements of electron decoherence time in a series of pure gold wires, 18 nm thick and 30 nm wide. At fields up to 15 T, large enough to polarize any concentration of magnetic impurity spins, conductance fluctuation measurements show almost no temperature dependence of the decoherence time below 300 mK, both in the correlation field for interference and the root-mean-square value of the fluctuations. Combined with previous low-field weak localization measurements on samples from similar material, our experiment suggests that the ubiquitous saturation of decoherence time in these samples is not due to any mechanism based on magnetic impurity spins.

Abstract
Transgenic lines of indica rice were generated by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation with the choline oxidase ( codA) gene from Arthrobacter globiformis. Choline oxidase catalyses conversion of choline to glycine betaine. Glycine betaine is known to provide tolerance against a variety of stresses. Molecular analyses of seven independent transgenic lines as performed by Southern, Northern and Western hybridization revealed integration and expression of the transgene as well as inheritance in the progeny plants. A good correlation was observed between levels of mRNA and protein accumulation, and a significant amount of choline oxidase product, i.e. glycine betaine, accumulated in R0 as well as R1 plants. Mendelian as well as non-Mendelian segregation patterns were obtained in the progeny plants. Challenge studies performed with R1 plants by exposure to salt stress (0.15 M NaCl) for 1 week, followed by a recovery period, revealed that in some cases more than 50% of the transgenic plants could survive salt stress and set seed whereas wild-type plants failed to recover.

Abstract
Molecular oxygen in electronic singlet state is a very powerful oxidant. Its damaging action in a variety of biological processes has been well recognized. Here we report the singlet oxygen quenching action of proline. Singlet oxygen (1O2) was produced photochemically by irradiating a solution of sensitiser and detected by following the formation of stable nitroxide radical yielded in the reaction of 1O2 with the sterically hindered amine (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine, TEMP). Illumination of a sensitiser, toluidine blue led to a time dependent increase in singlet oxygen production as detected by the formation of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) by EPR spectrometry. Interestingly, the production of TEMPO was completely abolished by the presence of proline at concentration as low as 20mM. These results show that proline is a very effective singlet oxygen quencher. Other singlet oxygen generating photosensitizer like hematopophyrin and fluorescein also produced identical results with proline. Since proline is one of the important solutes which accumulate in many organisms when they are exposed to environmental stresses, it is likely that proline accumulation is related to the protection of these organisms against singlet oxygen production during stress conditions. A possible mechanism of singlet oxygen quenching by proline is discussed.

Abstract
AIM The purpose of this study was to assess the response of diabetics to scaling and root planing treatment and subgingival oral irrigation as adjunctive therapy. METHOD A total of 52 type 1 and 2 diabetics (mean age 51.3+/-14) with adult periodontitis were randomized to two groups. Treatment included ultrasonic scaling and scaling and root planing in both groups (control and test) plus subgingival water irrigation 2x daily for the test group. Assessments were made prior to and at 6 and 12 weeks after treatment. Parameters measured were modified gingival index (MGI), probing pocket depth (PPD), plaque index (PI), clinical attachment level (CAL), and bleeding on probing (BOP). Systemic measurement of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) generation, cytokines (TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, IL-10, and PGE2), and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C). RESULTS After treatment, analysis of data showed that both groups had clinical and systemic improvement. The test group had a statistically significant reduction for MGI, PI, and BOP compared to controls (p<0.03) at 12 weeks and for ROS generation at 12 weeks (p<0.012). Unlike controls, systemic analysis of cytokines showed a statistically significant reduction from baseline for IL-1beta at 6 weeks and PGE2 at 6 and 12 weeks (p<0.05) within test group. CONCLUSION These results suggest that scaling and root planing and adjunctive therapy may be of value in establishing a healthy periodontium in diabetics.

Abstract
Having demonstrated recently that hydrocortisone (HC) suppresses intranuclear and total cellular nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappa B) and increases inhibitor kappa B (I kappa B) in mononuclear cells (MNC), in vivo, we have now investigated the effect of hydrocortisone on the other major pro-inflammatory transcription factor, AP-1 and the two proteins, MMP-2 and MMP-9, whose transcription is modulated by it. MMP's hydrolyze extracellular matrix proteins and thus, allow the spread of inflammation. HC (100 mg) was given intravenously to eight normal subjects following an overnight fast. Blood samples were obtained at 0, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 24 h. MNC were separated and the nuclear fractions and cellular homogenates were prepared by standard techniques. AP-1 binding activity was measured by electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA). Plasma MMP-2 and MMP-9 were measured by ELISA. AP-1 binding activity fell significantly at 1, 2, 4 and 8 h. Plasma MMP-2 concentration also decreased significantly at 1, 2, 4 and 8 h while MMP-9 decreased at 1 and 2 h. These data demonstrate that the acute anti-inflammatory effect of HC, in vivo, is, in part, due to AP-1 suppression and a reduction in MMP-2 and MMP-9. Thus, HC may reduce the extracellular spread of inflammation through the inhibition of matrix metalloproteinases.
