Abstract
We disclose a Ni-catalyzed cyclization/alkylmetal interception reaction in which products are readily linearized to permit regiodefined alkene dicarbofunctionalization. This method offers a convenient route to access 1,2-oxasilolane heterocycles, 3-hydroxysilanes and 4-arylalkanols with the formation of C(sp3)-C(sp3) bonds at primary and secondary alkyl carbon centers. In this reaction, a silicon-oxygen (Si-O) bond functions as a detachable linker that can be delinked with several hydride, alkyl, aryl and vinyl nucleophiles to create profusely functionalized 3-hydroxysilanes. A silicon motif in the cyclic C(sp3)-Si-O construct in 1,2-oxasilolane heterocycles can also be selectively deleted by Pd-catalyzed hydrodesilylation affording Si-ablated linear alcohol products reminiscent of vicinal ethylene dicarbofunctionalization with C(sp3) and C(sp2) carbon sources.

Abstract
We disclose a method for the dibenzylation of alkenylarenes with benzyl bromides using iron powder. This reaction generates branched alkyl scaffolds adorned with functionalized aryl rings through the formation of two new C(sp3)-C(sp3) bonds at the vicinal carbons of alkenes. This protocol tolerates electron-rich, electron-neutral, and electron-poor benzyl bromides and alkenylarenes. Mechanistic studies suggest the formation of benzylic radical intermediates as a result of single-electron transfer from the iron, which is intercepted by alkenylarenes.

Abstract
This systematic review assesses the effect of menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) on cardiovascular outcomes and risk factors in postmenopausal women with cardiovascular disease (CVD). The Medline, Embase and Cochrane databases were searched from inception to December 2022 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies using methodology from a previous Cochrane review. Quality assessment used the Cochrane risk of bias tool and Newcastle-Ottawa scale, respectively. From 5647 studies identified, 29 (23 RCTs and six observational studies) were included. Most studies were conducted in North America or Europe and investigated oral estrogens. Participants were older with varying frequency of cardiac risk factors and underlying CVD. No significant difference was observed between MHT users and controls regarding primary outcomes of non-fatal myocardial infarction, cardiovascular death or stroke. No difference in frequency of angina, heart failure and transient ischemic attacks was observed. Inconsistent effects of MHT on angiographic progression were seen and varied with glycemic status. Estradiol had a positive effect on flow-mediated dilatation. Limited studies identified differing effects of MHT on cardiac risk factors, varying with estrogen preparation. This study confirms no benefit of MHT for secondary CVD prevention, highlighting evidence limitations and the importance of shared decision-making when managing menopausal symptoms in women with CVD.

Abstract
We disclose a Ni-catalyzed regioselective dialkylation reaction of alkenylarenes with α-halocarbonyls and alkylzinc reagents. The reaction produces γ-arylated alkanecarbonyl compounds with the generation of two new C(sp3 )-C(sp3 ) bonds at the vicinal carbons of alkenes. This reaction is effective for the use of primary, secondary and tertiary α-halocarboxylic esters, amides and ketones in conjunction with primary and secondary alkylzinc reagents as the sources of two C(sp3 ) carbons for the dialkylation of terminal and cyclic internal alkenes.

Abstract
Cyclopropanes are key features in many preclinical, clinical, and commercial drugs, as well as natural products. The most prolific technique for their synthesis is the metal-catalyzed reaction of an alkene with a diazoalkane, a highly energetic reagent requiring stringent safety precautions. Discovery of alternative innocuous reagents remains an ongoing challenge. Herein, we report a simple photoredox-catalyzed intermolecular cyclopropanation of unactivated alkenes with active methylene compounds. The reaction proceeds in neutral solvent under air or dioxygen (O2) with a photoredox catalyst excited by blue light-emitting diode light and an iodine co-catalyst that is either added as molecular iodine or generated in situ from alkyl iodides. Mechanistic investigations indicate that photosensitized O2 plays a vital role in the generation of carbon-centered radicals for both the addition of active methylene compounds to alkenes and the ring closure.

Abstract
Alkene dicarbofunctionalization is a rapidly emerging tool for complex molecule synthesis that installs two carbon fragments regioselectively across an alkene. This method has the potential to engineer stereodefined polymers, yet the application of difunctionalization reactions to polymer synthesis remains unexplored. Herein, we describe the first example of a Ni-catalyzed difunctionalization of alkenes with arylboronic esters and aryl bromides innate to the alkene. The polymerization reaction proceeds regioselectively with the addition of the aryl bromide to the terminal alkenyl carbon and arylboronic ester to the internal benzylic carbon. The resultant poly[arylene-α-(aryl)ethylene]s comprise aryl groups installed at regular intervals along the polymer backbone through chain propagation in two directions. Polymers with molecular weights generally ranging from 30 to 175 kDa were obtained after successful fractionation from oligomeric species. Thermal analysis of the poly[arylene α-(aryl)ethylene]s revealed stability up to ∼399 °C, with a Tg of 90 °C, both of which are similar in value to poly(styrene)s and poly(phenylene methylene)s.

Abstract
We disclose a palladium-catalyzed difunctionalization of skipped diene with alkenyl triflates and arylboronic acids to produce 1,3-alkenylarylated products. The reaction proceeded efficiently with Pd(acac)2 as a catalyst and CsF as a base for a wide range of electron-deficient and electron-rich arylboronic acids as well as oxygen-heterocyclic, sterically hindered, and complex natural product-derived alkenyl triflates bearing various functional groups. The reaction produced 3-aryl-5-alkenylcyclohexene derivatives with 1,3-syn-disubstituted stereochemistry.

Abstract
Digital in-line holography (DIH) is an established method to image small particles in a manner where image reconstruction is performed computationally post-measurement. This ability renders it ideal for aerosol characterization, where particle collection or confinement is often difficult, if not impossible. Conventional DIH provides a gray-scale image akin to a particle's silhouette, and while it gives the particle size and shape, there is little information about the particle material. Based on the recognition that the spectral reflectance of a surface is partly determined by the material, we demonstrate a method to image free-flowing particles with DIH in color with the eventual aim to differentiate materials based on the observed color. Holograms formed by the weak backscattered light from individual particles illuminated by red, green, and blue lasers are recorded by a color sensor. Images are reconstructed from the holograms and then layered to form a color image, the color content of which is quantified by chromaticity analysis to establish a representative signature. A variety of mineral dust aerosols are studied where the different signatures suggest the possibility to differentiate particle material. The ability of the method to resolve the inhomogeneous composition within a single particle in some cases is shown as well.

Here, a novel method of reductive dicarbofunctionalization has been developed using a single alkenyl triflate as the electrophile, combined with an unactivated alkene. The reaction does not require an external auxiliary and proceeds with complete regioselectivity.

Abstract
We have performed the first direct measurement of two resonances of the ^{7}Be(α,γ)^{11}C reaction with unknown strengths using an intense radioactive ^{7}Be beam and the DRAGON recoil separator. We report on the first measurement of the 1155 and 1110 keV resonance strengths of 1.73±0.25(stat)±0.40(syst) eV and 125_{-25}^{+27}(stat)±15(syst) meV, respectively. The present results have reduced the uncertainty in the ^{7}Be(α,γ)^{11}C reaction rate to ∼9.4%-10.7% over T=1.5-3 GK, which is relevant for nucleosynthesis in the neutrino-driven outflows of core-collapse supernovae (νp process). We find no effect of the new, constrained reaction rate on νp-process nucleosynthesis.

Abstract
We report a Cu(II)-catalyzed cyclization/coupling of alkenyl aldimines with arylzinc reagents to create indole-3-diarylmethane derivatives (Sapkota et al. ChemRxiv 2022, DOI: 10.26434/chemrxiv-2022-d6qn). The current reaction provides a unified modular route from readily available starting materials to indole-3-diarylmethanes in which all three arene cores can be decorated with differential functional substitutions on demand. Since the cyclization/coupling of alkenyl aldimines is unknown to date, the current method widens the scope with regard to both the substrate and product diversity for this class of reaction.

Abstract
We disclose a Ni-catalyzed vicinal alkylarylation of unactivated alkenes in γ,δ-alkenylketimines with aryl halides and alkylzinc reagents. The reaction produces γ-C(sp3)-branched δ-arylketones with the construction of two new C(sp3)-C(sp3) and C(sp3)-C(sp2) bonds. Electron-deficient alkenes play crucial dual roles as ligands to stabilize reaction intermediates and to increase catalytic rates for the formation of C(sp3)-C(sp3) bonds. This alkene alkylarylation reaction is also effective for secondary alkylzinc reagents and internal alkenes, and proceeds with a complete regio- and stereocontrol, affording products with up to three contiguous all-carbon all-cis secondary stereocenters.

Abstract
Electrochemical C-H functionalization is a rapidly growing area of interest in organic synthesis. To achieve maximum atom economy, the flow electrolysis process is more sustainable. This allows shorter reaction times, safer working environments, and better selectivities. Using this technology, the problem of overoxidation can be reduced and less emergence of side products or no side products are possible. Flow electro-reactors provide high surface-to-volume ratios and contain electrodes that are closely spaced where the diffusion layers overlap to give the desired product, electrochemical processes can now be managed without the need for a deliberately added supporting electrolyte. Considering the importance of flow electrochemical C-H functionalization, a comprehensive review is presented. Herein, we summarize flow electrolysis for the construction of C-C and C-X (X=O, N, S, and I) bonds formation. Also, benzylic oxidation and access to biologically active molecules are discussed.

Abstract
This work applies digital holography to image stationary micro-particles in color. The approach involves a Michelson interferometer to mix reference light with the weak intensity light backscattered from a distribution of particles. To enable color images, three wavelengths are used, 430, 532, and 633 nm, as primary light sources. Three separate backscattered holograms are recorded simultaneously, one for each wavelength, which are resolved without spectral cross talk using a three-CMOS prism sensor. Fresnel diffraction theory is used to render monochrome images from each hologram. The images are then combined via additive color mixing with red, green, and blue as the primary colors. The result is a color image similar in appearance to that obtained with a conventional microscope in white-light epi-illumination mode. A variety of colored polyethylene micro-spheres and nonspherical dust particles demonstrate the feasibility of the approach and illustrate the effect of simple speckle-noise suppression and white balance methods. Finally, a chromaticity analysis is applied that is capable of differentiating particles of different colors in a quantitative and objective manner.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute kidney injury (AKI), a frequent and serious complication of hospitalized patients, is associated with increased mortality and morbidity. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is a biomarker for the early identification of AKI. We report a comparative laboratory verification of the Abbott Diagnostics (ARCHITECT® urine NGAL) and BioPorto Diagnostics (NGAL TestTM) assays including an assessment of the Abbott assay's performance in EDTA plasma. METHODS Intra-/interbatch imprecision, linearity, recovery, and limit of quantitation (LoQ) were assessed and an interassay comparison performed (n = 51). Between-laboratory agreement was assessed against other laboratories using the Abbott (n = 48) and BioPorto (n = 94) assays. Plasma NGAL (pNGAL) levels were measured in non-AKI patients with a range of estimated glomerular filtration rates (n = 80). RESULTS Coefficients of variation (CVs) for intra- and interbatch imprecision were 0.7%-12.4% and 1.9%-27.5% for the BioPorto assay, respectively, and 1.4%-6.3%/3.4%-6.8%, respectively, for the Abbott assay. The BioPorto assay exhibited a higher LoQ (27.5 ng/mL vs 1.2 ng/mL). Both assays were linear over the range 5-6000 ng/mL. Recovery of recombinant NGAL was 113.1 ± 7.1% and 96.5 ± 7.8% for the Abbott and BioPorto assays, respectively. On average, the Abbott assay gave results 9.2% lower than the BioPorto assay. Mean differences of 0.2% (Abbott) and 20.2% (BioPorto) were observed in the between-laboratory comparison. In patients without AKI, pNGAL levels were inversely proportional to eGFR. CONCLUSIONS Performance of the Abbott and BioPorto assays was similar although the latter performed less well at lower NGAL concentrations. The Abbott assay tended to yield lower results, exhibited a lower LoQ and over-recovered NGAL. Although only Conformité Européenne-marked and marketed for use in urine, the Abbott assay demonstrated equivalent performance to the BioPorto assay with EDTA plasma.

Abstract
We report a Ni-catalyzed regioselective arylbenzylation of alkenylarenes with benzyl halides and arylzinc reagents. The reaction furnishes differently substituted 1,1,3-triarylpropyl structures that are reminiscent of the cores of oligoresveratrol natural products. The reaction is also compatible for the coupling of internal alkenes, secondary benzyl halides and variously substituted arylzinc reagents. Kinetic studies reveal that the reaction proceeds with a rate-limiting single-electron-transfer process and is autocatalyzed by in-situ-generated ZnX2 . The reaction rate is amplified by a factor of three through autocatalysis upon addition of ZnX2 .

Abstract
Recently, alkene dicarbofunctionalization, i.e., the powerful organic synthesis method of alkene difunctionalization with two carbon sources, emerged as a formidable reaction with immense promise to synthesize complex molecules expeditiously from simple chemicals. This reaction is generally achieved with transition metals (TMs) through interception by carbon sources of an alkylmetal [β-H-C(sp3)-[M]] species, a key intermediate prone to undergo rapid β-H elimination. Related prior reports, since Paolo Chiusoli and Catellani's work in 1982 [ Tetrahedron Lett. 1982, 23, 4517], have used bicyclic and disubstituted terminal alkenes, wherein β-H elimination is avoided by geometric restriction or complete lack of β-H's. With reasoning that β-H-C(sp3)-[M] intermediates could be rendered amenable to interception with the use of first row late TMs and formation of coordination-assisted transient metallacycles, these two strategies were implemented to address the β-H elimination problem in alkene dicarbofunctionalization reactions.Because first row late TMs catalyze C(sp3)-C(sp3) coupling, Cu and Ni were anticipated to impart sufficient stability to β-H-C(sp3)-[M] intermediates, generated catalytically upon alkene carbometalation, for their subsequent interception by carbon electrophiles/nucleophiles in three-component reactions. Additionally, such an innate property could enable alkene difunctionalization with carbon coupling partners through entropically driven cyclization/coupling reactions. The cyclometalation concept to stabilize intractable β-H-C(sp3)-[M] intermediates was hypothesized when three-component reactions were performed. The idea of cyclometalation to curtail β-H elimination is founded upon Whitesides's [ J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1976, 98, 6521] observation that metallacycles undergo β-H elimination much slower than acyclic alkylmetals.In this Account, examples of alkene dicarbofunctionalization reactions demonstrate that Cu and Ni catalysts could enable cyclization/coupling of alkenylzinc reagents, alkyl halides, and aryl halides to afford complex carbo- and heterocycles. In addition, forming coordination-assisted transient nickellacycles enabled regioselective performance of three-component dicarbofunctionalization of various alkenyl compounds. In situ reaction of [M]-H with alkenes generated after β-H elimination induced an unprecedented metallacycle contraction process, in which six-membered metal-containing rings shrank to five-membered cycles, allowing creation of new carbon-carbon bonds at allylic (1,3) positions. Applications of these regioselective alkene dicarbofunctionalization reactions are discussed.

Abstract
Background Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is a recognised biomarker for acute kidney injury (AKI).This study investigated the impact of balanced forced-diuresis using RenalGuard® system (RG), in reducing acute kidney injury (AKI) rates and the associated NGAL levels (6-h post-CPB plasma level) post adult cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Methods Patients included in the study were at high-risk for AKI post cardiac surgery, namely history of diabetes and/or anaemia, e-GFR 20–60 ml/min/1.73 m2, Logistic EuroScore > 5, anticipated CPB time > 120 min. Patients were randomized to either RG (n = 110) or managed as per current practice (control = 110). RIFLE-defined AKI rate (based on serum creatinine level increase) within first 3 days of surgery and 6-h post CPB NGAL levels were the primary and secondary end-points. Results Pre and intra-operative characteristics between the two groups were similar (p > 0.05) including the pre-op NGAL levels, the oxygen delivery (ecDO2i) and the carbon dioxide production (ecVCO2i) during CPB. Patients in the RG group had a significantly lower post-operative RIFLE-defined AKI rate compared to control (10% (11/110) v/s 20.9% (23/110), p = 0.03). Overall, median 6-h post CPB NGAL levels in patients with AKI were significantly higher than those who did not develop AKI (211 vs 150 ng/ml, p < 0.001). Patients managed by balanced forced-diuresis had lower post-operative NGAL levels (146 vs 178 ng/ml, p = 0.09). Using previously reported NGAL cut-off level for AKI (142 ng/ml), binary logistic regression analysis confirmed a beneficial effect of the RG system, with an increased risk of AKI of 2.2 times in the control group (OR 2.2, 95% CI 1.14–4.27, p = 0.02). Conclusions Overall, the 6-h post-CPB plasma NGAL levels were significantly higher in patients who developed AKI. Patients managed with the novel approach of balanced forced-diuresis, provided by the RenalGuard® system, had a lower AKI rate and lower NGAL levels indicating a lesser degree of renal tissue injury. Abstract
We disclose a nickel-catalyzed reaction, which enabled us to difunctionalize unactivated γ,δ-alkenes in ketones with alkenyl triflates and arylboronic esters. The reaction was made feasible by the use of 5-chloro-8-hydroxyquinoline as a ligand along with NiBr2 ⋅DME as a catalyst and LiOtBu as base. The reaction proceeded with a wide range of cyclic, acyclic, endocyclic and exocyclic alkenyl ketones, and electron-rich and electron-deficient arylboronate esters. The reaction also worked with both cyclic and acyclic alkenyl triflates. Control experiments indicate that carbonyl coordination is required for the reaction to proceed.

Abstract
Objectives Forced‐diuresis during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) can be associated with significant electrolyte shifts. This study reports on the serum electrolyte changes during balanced forced‐diuresis with the RenalGuard® system (RG) during CPB. Methods Patients at risk of acute kidney injury (AKI)—(history of diabetes &/or anaemia, e‐GFR 20–60 ml/min/1.73 m2, anticipated CPB time >120 min, Log EuroScore >5)—were randomized to either RG (study group) or managed as per current practice (control group). Results The use of RG reduced AKI rate (10% for RG and 20.9% in control, p = .03). Mean urine output was significantly higher in the RG group during surgery (2366 ± 877 ml vs. 765 ± 549 ml, p < .001). The serum potassium levels were maintained between 3.96 and 4.97 mmol/L for the RG group and 4.02 and 5.23 mmol/L for the controls. Median potassium supplemental dose was 60 (0–220) mmol (RG group) as compared to 30 (0–190) mmol for control group over first 24 h (p < .001). On Day 1 post‐op, there were no significant differences in the serum sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphate, and chloride levels between the two groups. Otherwise, postoperative clinical recovery was also similar. Conclusions Balanced forced‐diuresis with the RG reduced AKI rates after on‐pump cardiac surgery compared to controls. Although the RG group required higher doses of IV potassium replacement in the postoperative period, normal serum levels of potassium were maintained by appropriate intravenous potassium supplementation and the clinical outcomes between groups were similar.

Abstract
We disclose a Ni-catalyzed vicinal difunctionalization of alkenes with benzyl halides and alkylzinc reagents, which produces products with two new alkyl-alkyl bonds. This alkene dialkylation is effective in combining secondary benzyl halides and secondary alkylzinc reagents with internal alkenes, which furnishes products with three contiguous all-carbon secondary stereocenters. The products can be readily elaborated to access complex tetralene, benzosuberene, and bicyclodecene cores. The reaction also features as the most efficient alkene difunctionalization process to date with catalyst loadings down to 500 ppm and the catalytic turnover number (TON) and turnover frequency (TOF) registering up to 2 × 103 and 165 h-1 at rt, respectively.

Abstract
Widespread of heavy metals contamination has led to several environmental problems. Some biological methods to remove heavy metals from contaminated wastewater are being widely explored. In the present study, the efficiency of a white-rot fungus, Phlebia brevispora to remove different metals (Pb, Cd and Ni) has been evaluated. Atomic absorption spectroscopy of treated and untreated metal containing water revealed that all the metals were efficiently removed by the fungus. Among all the used metals, cadmium was the most toxic metal for fungal growth. Phlebia brevispora removed maximum Pb (97·5%) from 100 mmol l-1 Pb solution, which was closely followed by Cd (91·6%) and Ni (72·7%). Scanning electron microscopic images revealed that the presence of metal altered the morphology and fine texture of fungal hyphae. However, the attachment of metal on mycelia surface was not observed during energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, which points towards the intracellular compartmentation of metals in vacuoles. Thus, the study demonstrated an application of P. brevispora for efficient removal of Pb, Cd and Ni from the metal contaminated water, which can further be applied for bioremediation of heavy metals present in the industrial effluent.

Abstract
Migration of metals along a carbon chain is triggered by two of the most common organometallic elementary steps - β-hydride (β-H) elimination and alkene hydrometallation. This process heralds a new future for creating bonds at carbon sites that fall outside the tenets of the conventional wisdom for reactivity and bond formation, and provides an opportunity to leverage β-H elimination to advance the very reaction of alkene difunctionalization it is intrinsically predestined to disrupt. Almost four decades since its genesis, the early adventure for alkene difunctionalization by metal migration was sporadic, and its later development went on a hiatus primarily due to original impetus on arresting β-H elimination for vicinal alkene difunctionalization. With the recent surge on alkene difunctionalization, efforts have been gradually shifting to harnessing the process of β-H elimination to difunctionalize alkenes at sites other than the classical vicinal carbons, termed henceforth nonclassical reaction sites for pedagogical simplicity. In this review article, we extricate and examine the origin and the development of such reactions over the years. This review covers a wide range of reactions for the difunctionalization of alkenes at geminal (1,1), allylic (1,3) and remote (1,n) carbon sites with a variety of coupling partners. These reactions have enabled engineering of complex molecular frameworks with the generation of new carbon-carbon (C-C)/C-C, C-C/C-heteroatom (halogens, O, N, B) and C-B/C-B bonds. The development of these unique transformations is also presented with mechanistic hypotheses and experimental evidences put forward by researchers. Judged by the number of reports emerging recently, it is now strikingly evident that the field of alkene difunctionalization by metal migration has begun to gain momentum, which holds a great future prospect to develop into a synthetic method of enormous potential.

Abstract
We report a Ni-catalyzed regioselective α-carbonylalkylarylation of vinylarenes with α-halocarbonyl compounds and arylzinc reagents. The reaction works with primary, secondary, and tertiary α-halocarbonyl molecules, and electronically varied arylzinc reagents. The reaction generates γ,γ-diarylcarbonyl derivatives with α-secondary, tertiary, and quaternary carbon centers. The products can be readily converted to aryltetralones, including a precursor to Zoloft, an antidepressant drug.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We report the results of International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium (INICC) surveillance study from January 2012 to December 2017 in 523 intensive care units (ICUs) in 45 countries from Latin America, Europe, Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, and Western Pacific. METHODS During the 6-year study period, prospective data from 532,483 ICU patients hospitalized in 242 hospitals, for an aggregate of 2,197,304 patient days, were collected through the INICC Surveillance Online System (ISOS). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-National Healthcare Safety Network (CDC-NHSN) definitions for device-associated health care-associated infection (DA-HAI) were applied. RESULTS Although device use in INICC ICUs was similar to that reported from CDC-NHSN ICUs, DA-HAI rates were higher in the INICC ICUs: in the medical-surgical ICUs, the pooled central line-associated bloodstream infection rate was higher (5.05 vs 0.8 per 1,000 central line-days); the ventilator-associated pneumonia rate was also higher (14.1 vs 0.9 per 1,000 ventilator-days,), as well as the rate of catheter-associated urinary tract infection (5.1 vs 1.7 per 1,000 catheter-days). From blood cultures samples, frequencies of resistance, such as of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to piperacillin-tazobactam (33.0% vs 18.3%), were also higher. CONCLUSIONS Despite a significant trend toward the reduction in INICC ICUs, DA-HAI rates are still much higher compared with CDC-NHSN's ICUs representing the developed world. It is INICC's main goal to provide basic and cost-effective resources, through the INICC Surveillance Online System to tackle the burden of DA-HAIs effectively.

Abstract
We report a nickel-catalyzed one pot synthesis of 9-arylmethylanthracene motifs, which find applications in medicinal and material chemistry. In this synthesis, we apply three component alkene dicarbofunctionalization of 2-vinylaldimines with aryl iodides and arylzinc reagent to generate a 1,1,2-diarylethyl scaffold, which then undergoes an acidpromoted cyclization followed by aromatization to furnish 9-arylmethylanthracene cores. With the new method, a number of differently-substituted 9-arylmethylanthracene derivatives can be synthesized in good yields.

Abstract
We disclose a transmetalation-initiated Ni(I)-catalyzed regioselective β,δ-vinylarylation of γ,δ-alkenyl α-cyanocarboxylic esters with vinyl triflates and arylzinc reagents. This reaction proceeds via contraction of six-membered nickellacycles to five-membered nickellacycles to form carbon-carbon bonds at the nonclassical homovicinal sites, and it provides expeditious access to a wide range of complex aliphatic α-cyanoesters, α-cyanocarboxylic acids, dicarboxylic acids, dicarboxylic acid monoamides, monocarboxylic acids, nitriles, and spirolactones. Control, deuterium labeling, and crossover experiments indicate that (i) the nickellacycle contraction occurs by β-H elimination, followed by hydronickellation on transiently formed alkenes, and (ii) the Ni species are stabilized as Ni-enolates.

Abstract
Sensing of a few unpaired electron spins, such as in metal ions and radicals, is a useful but difficult task in nanoscale physics, biology, and chemistry. Single negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV-) centers in diamond offer high sensitivity and spatial resolution in the optical detection of weak magnetic fields produced by a spin bath but often require long acquisition times on the order of seconds. Here, we present an approach based on coupled spin and charge dynamics in dense NV ensembles in strongly fluorescent nanodiamonds (NDs) to sense external magnetic dipoles. We apply this approach to various paramagnetic species, including gadolinium complexes, magnetite nanoparticles, and hemoglobin in whole blood. Taking advantage of the high NV density, we demonstrate a dramatic reduction in acquisition time (down to tens of milliseconds) while maintaining high sensitivity to paramagnetic centers. Strong luminescence, high sensitivity, and short acquisition time make dense NV- ensembles in NDs a potentially promising tool for biosensing and bioimaging applications.

Abstract
The similarity between the light-scattering pattern of a particle in the near-forward direction and diffraction from the particle's silhouette is investigated. Images of irregularly shaped free-flowing aerosol particles are obtained from digital hologram measurements, which are then binarized to yield a silhouette. Application of Huygens's principle to the silhouette generates an approximate scattering pattern, which when compared to the true measured pattern shows good agreement for particles much larger than the wavelength of light.

Abstract
Background: Acute renal failure after cardiac surgery is known to be associated with significant short-term morbidity and mortality. There have as yet been no major reports on long-term quality of life (QOL). This study assessed the impact of acute kidney injury (AKI) and renal replacement therapy (RRT) on long-term survival and QOL after cardiac surgery. The need for long-term RRT is also assessed. Materials and Methods: Patients who underwent cardiac surgery between 2005 and 2011 (n = 6087) and developed AKI (RIFLE criteria, n = 570) were included. They were propensity-matched 1:1 to patients without renal impairment (control). Data were prospectively collected, and health-related QOL questionnaire was sent to patients who were alive at least 1-year postoperatively at the time of the study. Results: There was no significant difference in the preoperative characteristics between the two groups (age, gender, left ventricular ejection fraction, procedure, urgency, logistic Euroscore), respectively. Median follow-up was 52 months. Survival data were available in all patients. Questionnaires were returned in 64% of eligible patients. Long-term survival was significantly lower, and QOL, in particular the physical aspect, was significantly worse for the AKI group as compared to non-AKI group (38.8 vs. 44.2, P = 0.002), especially so in patients who required RRT. In alive respondents, despite an 18% (66/359) incidence of ongoing renal follow-up, the need for late RRT was only in 1.1% (4/359). Conclusion: AKI and especially the need for RRT following cardiac surgery are associated with increased long-term mortality as well as worse quality of life in a propensity-matched control group.

Abstract
We report a Ni-catalyzed regioselective alkylarylation of vinylarenes with alkyl halides and arylzinc reagents to generate 1,1-diarylalkanes. The reaction proceeds well with primary, secondary and tertiary alkyl halides, and electronically diverse arylzinc reagents. Mechanistic investigations by radical probes, competition studies and quantitative kinetics reveal that the current reaction proceeds via a Ni(0)/Ni(I)/Ni(II) catalytic cycle by a rate-limiting direct halogen atom abstraction via single electron transfer to alkyl halides by a Ni(0)-catalyst.

Abstract
Transition metal (TM)-catalyzed difunctionalization of unactivated olefins with two carbon-based entities is a powerful method to construct complex molecular architectures rapidly from simple and readily available feedstock chemicals. While dicarbofunctionalization of unactivated olefins has a long history typically with the use of either carbon monoxide to intercept C(sp3 )-[M] (alkyl-TM) species or substrates lacking in β-hydrogen (β-Hs), development of this class of reaction still remains seriously limited due to complications of β-H elimination arising from the in situ-generated C(sp3 )-[M] intermediates. Over the years, different approaches have been harnessed to suppress β-H elimination, which have led to the development of various types of olefin dicarbofunctionalization reactions even in substrates that generate C(sp3 )-[M] intermediates bearing β-Hs with a wide range of electrophiles and nucleophiles. In this review, these developments will be discussed both through the lens of historical perspectives as well as the strategies scrutinized over the years to address the issue of β-H elimination. However, this review article by no means is designed to be exhaustive in the field, and is merely presented to provide the readers an overview of the key reaction developments.

Abstract
We report a Ni-catalysed diarylation of unactivated olefins in dimethylpyridylvinylsilane by intercepting Heck C(sp3)-NiX intermediates, derived from aryl halides, with arylzinc reagents. This approach utilizes a modifiable pyridylsilyl moiety as a coordinating group that plays a dual role of intercepting oxidative addition species to promote Heck carbometallation, and stabilizing the Heck C(sp3)-NiX intermediates as transient metallacycles to suppress β-hydride elimination, and facilitate transmetalation/reductive elimination. This method affords 1,2-diarylethylsilanes, which can be readily oxidized to 1,2-diarylethanols that occur as structural motifs in 3-aryl-3,4-dihydroisocoumarin and dihydrostilbenoid natural products.

Abstract
A series of experimental studies, along with DFT calculations, are reported that provide a detailed view into the mechanism of Ullmann coupling of phenols with aryl halides in the presence of catalysts generated from Cu(I) and bidentate, anionic ligands. These studies encompass catalysts containing anionic ligands formed by deprotonation of 8-hydroxyquinoline, 2-pyridylmethyl tert-butyl ketone, and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dione. Three-coordinate, heteroleptic species [Cu(LX)OAr]- were shown by experiment and DFT calculations to be the most stable complexes in catalytic systems containing 8-hydroxyquinoline or 2-pyridylmethyl tert-butyl ketone and to be generated reversibly in the system containing 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dione. These heteroleptic complexes were characterized by a combination of 19F NMR, 1H NMR, and UV-vis spectroscopy, as well as ESI-MS. The heteroleptic complexes generated in situ react with iodoarenes to form biaryl ethers in high yields without evidence for an aryl radical intermediate. Measurements of 13C/12C isotope effects showed that oxidative addition of the iodoarene occurs irreversibly. This information, in combination with the kinetic data, shows that oxidative addition occurs to the [Cu(LX)OAr]- complexes and is turnover-limiting. A Hammett analysis of the effect of phenoxide electronic properties on the rate of the reaction of [Cu(LX)OAr]- with iodotoluene also is consistent with oxidative addition of the iodoarene to an anionic phenoxide complex. Calculations by DFT suggest that this oxidative addition is followed by dissociation of I- and reductive elimination of the biaryl ether from the resulting neutral Cu(III) complex.

Abstract
Background Ventilator-associated pneumonia is associated with significant morbidity, mortality and healthcare costs. Most of the cost data that are available relate to general intensive care patients in privately remunerated institutions. This study assessed the cost of managing ventilator-associated pneumonia in a cardiac intensive care unit in the National Health Service in the United Kingdom. Methods Propensity-matched study of prospectively collected data from the cardiac surgical database between April 2011 and December 2014 in all patients undergoing cardiac surgery (n = 3416). Patients who were diagnosed as developing ventilator-associated pneumonia, as per the surveillance definition for ventilator-associated pneumonia (n = 338), were propensity score matched with those who did not (n = 338). Costs of treating post-op cardiac surgery patients in intensive care and cost difference if ventilator-associated pneumonia occurred based on Healthcare Resource Group categories were assessed. Secondary outcomes included differences in morbidity, mortality and cardiac intensive care unit and in-hospital length of stay. Results There were no significant differences in the pre-operative characteristics or procedures between the groups. Ventilator-associated pneumonia developed in 10% of post-cardiac surgery patients. Post-operatively, the ventilator-associated pneumonia group required longer ventilation (p < 0.01), more respiratory support, longer cardiac intensive care unit (8 vs 3, p < 0.001) and in-hospital stay (16 vs 9) days. The overall cost for post-operative recovery after cardiac surgery for ventilator-associated pneumonia patients was £15,124 compared to £6295 for non-ventilator-associated pneumonia (p < 0.01). The additional cost of treating patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia was £8829. Conclusion Ventilator-associated pneumonia was associated with significant morbidity to the patients, generating significant costs. This cost was nearer to the lower end for the cost for general intensive care unit patients in privately reimbursed systems.
