Sonic boom measurements: Practical implications considering ground effects, microphone installation, and weather hardening

Sonic boom measurements from recent flight tests have provided an opportunity to investigate effects of microphone installation on sonic boom waveforms, spectra, and metric levels in support of NASA X-59 flight test planning. While those flight tests used N-wave aircraft (F-18s), modeling studies were also conducted using source characteristics for a shaped low-boom aircraft. Of particular interest were the effects of receiver height on boom waveforms and metrics at elevated receiver positions, microphone installation, and local ground cover type. Reductions of more than 2 dB in A-weighted sound exposure level and perceived level were shown for 1.6 ft (0.48 m) microphone heights for 35º ray elevation angle. Measured and modeled results are described in this letter.

The Perceived Value of Acquiring Data Seals of Approval

The Data Seal of Approval (DSA) is one of the most widely used standards for Trusted Digital Repositories to date. Those who developed this standard have articulated seven main benefits of acquiring DSAs: 1) stakeholder confidence, 2) improvements in communication, 3) improvement in processes, 4) transparency, 5) differentiation from others, 6) awareness raising about digital preservation, and 7) less labor- and time-intensive. Little research has focused on if and how those who have acquired DSAs actually perceive these benefits. Consequently, this study examines the benefits of acquiring DSAs from the point of view of those who have them. In a series of 15 semi-structured interviews with representatives from 16 different organizations, participants described the benefits of having DSAs in their own words. Our findings suggest that participants experience all of the seven benefits that those who developed the standard promised. Additionally, our findings reflect the greater importance of some of those benefits compared to others. For example, participants mentioned the benefits of stakeholder confidence, transparency, improvement in processes and awareness raising about digital preservation more frequently than they discussed less labor- and time-intensive (e.g. it being less labor- and time-intensive to acquire DSAs than becoming certified by other standards), improvements in communication, and differentiation from others. Participants also mentioned two additional benefits of acquiring DSAs that are not explicitly listed on the DSA website that were very important to them: 1) the impact of acquiring the DSA on documentation of their workflows, and 2) assurance that they were following best practice. Implications and future directions for research are discussed.

The impact of immediate breast reconstruction after mastectomy on time to first adjuvant treatment in women with breast cancer in a community setting

BACKGROUND

The impact of immediate breast reconstruction on the time to first adjuvant therapy is controversial.

METHODS

Retrospective study design comparing time to first treatment in women undergoing mastectomy with and without immediate reconstruction in a community cancer center.

RESULTS

Seventy-six cases fit inclusion criteria of which 44 (58%) underwent mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. Women undergoing immediate reconstruction were younger, had more bilateral mastectomies and had fewer prior breast procedures. The median time to first adjuvant therapy was longer in the immediate reconstruction group [80.5days (36-343) versus 53.5 days (18-96), p = 0.003]. Fifteen of 44 patients had the start of adjuvant treatment over 90 days after resection, 14 of whom (93%) had immediate reconstruction versus 1 (7%) who did not (p = 0.01).

CONCLUSION

In this study immediate breast reconstruction was associated with a longer time to first adjuvant treatment, with adjuvant therapies being more likely delayed over 90 days.

Lipid-mediated protein functionalization of electrospun polycaprolactone fibers

In this study, electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) fibers are plasma-treated and chemically conjugated with cholesteryl succinyl silane (CSS). In addition to Raman spectroscopy, an immobilization study of DiO as a fluorescent probe of lipid membranes provides evidence supporting the CSS coating of plasma-treated PCL fibers. Further, anti-CD20 antibodies are used as a model protein to evaluate the potential of lipid-mediated protein immobilization as a mechanism to functionalize the CSS-PCL fiber scaffolds. Upon anti-CD20 functionalization, the CSS-PCL fiber scaffolds capture Granta-22 cells 2.4 times more than the PCL control does, although the two fiber scaffolds immobilize a comparable amount of anti-CD20. Taken together, results from the present study demonstrate that the CSS coating and CSS-mediated antibody immobilization offers an appealing strategy to functionalize electrospun synthetic polymer fibers and confer cell-specific functions on the fiber scaffolds, which can be mechanically robust but often lack biological functions.

Chemical information presentation in the Crystallography Open Database

Crystallography Open Database (COD, http://www.crystallography.net/) is the largest to date curated open-access collection of small to medium sized unit cell crystal structures [1,2]. Over 11 years of development, COD has accumulated over 1/4 million structures from the peer reviewed press and personal communications. COD has an automated data submission Web site, performs routine automatic quality checks on all incoming structures and is now recommended as a database for crystallographic deposition by several scientific journals. To facilitate automatic use and discoverability of COD data, and to increase usefulness of our database for chemists, two steps were undertaken. COD was now supplemented with software and data from the CrystalEye data aggregator. The new software permits extracting chemical data and presenting them as structural formula, unique moieties, and chemically significant fragments. We have also implemented search of crystal structures by the structural chemical formulae of the target compounds. The search is first of all performed among 70 000 hand-curated chemical structure descriptors, and can be extended to automatically generated descriptors. To facilitate data curation, a new software platform for data review is being developed. All COD structures will be evaluated using statistical distributions of observed geometrical and chemical properties (bond lengths, angles, dihedrals, planarities). The most statistically unusual structures will be forwarded to a COD reviewer Internet forum, where qualified reviewers will be asked whether they find provided evidence for a particular structure convincing or not. In this way, a set of human review indicators (convincing/unconvincing) will be available along with the match against the bulk of data (usual structure/unusual). Such indicators would be especially useful for deciding which COD records require special attention and which subsets of COD should be selected for reliable scientific inferences.

Magnetic Collapse and the Behavior of Transition Metal Oxides: FeO at High Pressures

Linearized augmented plane wave (LAPW) results are presented for FeO at high pressures using the Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA) to study the high-spin low-spin transition previously predicted by LAPW with the Local Density Approximation (LDA) and Linear Muffin Tin Orbital (LMTO-ASA) methods within the GGA. We find a first-order transition at a pressure of about 105 GPa for the cubic lattice, consistent with earlier LAPW results, but much lower than obtained with the LMTO. The results are generally consistent with recent Mössbauer experiments that show a transition at about 100 GPa. We also discuss the origin of the transition, and show that it is not due to electrostatic crystal-field effects, but is rather due to hybridization and band widening with pressure. Examination of experimental data and computations suggest that the high pressure hexagonal phase of FeO is likely a polytype between the B8 NiAs and anti-B8 AsNi structures. The former is predicted to be an antiferromagnetic metal, and the latter an antiferromagnetic insulator. Implications for geophysics are discussed.

An efficient rapid system for profiling the cellular activities of molecular libraries

Rapid quantitative methods for characterizing small molecules, peptides, proteins, or RNAs in a broad array of cellular assays would allow one to discover new biological activities associated with these molecules and also provide a more comprehensive profile of drug candidates early in the drug development process. Here we describe a robotic system, termed the automated compound profiler, capable of both propagating a large number of cell lines in parallel and assaying large collections of molecules simultaneously against a matrix of cellular assays in a highly reproducible manner. To illustrate its utility, we have characterized a set of 1,400 kinase inhibitors in a panel of 35 activated tyrosine-kinase-dependent cellular assays in dose-response format in a single experiment. Analysis of the resulting multidimensional dataset revealed subclusters of both inhibitors and kinases with closely correlated activities. The approach also identified activities for the p38 inhibitor BIRB796 and the dual src/abl inhibitor BMS-354825 and exposed the expected side activities for Glivec/STI571, including cellular inhibition of c-kit and platelet-derived growth factor receptor. This methodology provides a powerful tool for unraveling the cellular biology and molecular pharmacology of both naturally occurring and synthetic chemical diversity.

Novel therapeutic options for osteoporosis

Osteoporosis remains a significant clinical problem despite effective therapies. Many patients cannot or will not take currently available therapies. For this reason, research continues in search of more effective and more tolerable agents. Arzoxifene and TSE-424 are investigational selective estrogen receptor modulators that have been shown to be effective in animal studies and are now in clinical studies. Tibolone is a tissue-specific steroid that is currently used in Europe for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Multiple studies have shown efficacy in improving bone mineral density, but no fracture studies have been conducted to date. Although studies of the effect of isoflavones on bone mineral density have been encouraging, a large multicenter study in Europe recently showed no effect of isoflavones on fractures. The investigational bisphosphonates ibandronate and zoledronic acid may offer the advantage of less frequent dosing. The newly described agent osteoprotegerin has been shown in early studies to inhibit bone turnover. Finally, the issue of efficacy of statins in bone continues to be debated with no prospective, randomized studies yet to confirm the suggestion of benefit seen in epidemiologic studies.

RadStation: client-based digital dictation system and integrated clinical information display with an embedded Web-browser

RadStation is a digital dictation system having an integrated display of clinical information. The three-tiered system architecture provides robust performance, with most information displayed within one second after a request. The multifunctional client tier is a unique client/browser hybrid. A Web browser display window functions as the client application's data display window for clinical information, radiology reports, and laboratory and pathology results. RadStation provides a robust platform for digital dictation functionality. The system's internal status checks ensure operational integrity in a clinical environment. Also, the programmable dictation microphone and bar-code reader supplant the mouse as the system's primary input device. By merging information queries into existing work flow, radiologist's interpretation efficiency is maintained with instant access to essential clinical information. Finally, RadStation requires minimal training and has been enthusiastically accepted by our radiologists in an active clinical practice.

Low-dose esterified estrogen therapy: effects on bone, plasma estradiol concentrations, endometrium, and lipid levels. Estratab/Osteoporosis Study Group

BACKGROUND

Prospective studies have shown that doses equivalent to conjugated equine estrogens of 0.625 mg/d or higher are needed to produce a significant increase in bone mineral density of the lumbar spine.

OBJECTIVES

To determine the effects of unopposed esterified estrogens on bone mineral density, lipid levels, and endometrial tissue structure, and to relate these effects to changes in plasma estradiol levels.

METHODS

Four hundred six postmenopausal women were given calcium, 1000 mg/d, and randomly assigned to receive continuous esterified estrogens (0.3, 0.625, or 1.25 mg/d) or placebo for 24 months. Bone mineral density measurements and endometrial and laboratory assessments were conducted every 6 months; plasma estradiol concentrations were measured after 12, 18, and 24 months.

RESULTS

All doses of esterified estrogens produced significant increases in bone mineral density of the lumbar spine compared with baseline and with placebo at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. Mean plasma estradiol levels increased with esterified estrogens dose, and individual subject bone mineral density changes appeared related to plasma estradiol concentrations. Clinically relevant rates of endometrial hyperplasia were noted only in the groups receiving 0.625 and 1.25 mg of esterified estrogens daily. Lipid changes were dose related and apparent in all groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Esterified estrogens at doses from 0.3 to 1.25 mg/d, administered unopposed by progestin, produce a continuum of positive changes on bone and lipids. Plasma estradiol concentrations increased with esterified estrogens dose and were related to positive bone mineral densities. The 0.3-mg dose resulted in positive bone and lipid changes without inducing endometrial hyperplasia.

Differential diagnosis of brown tumor vs. cystic osteitis by arteriography and computed tomography

An expansile lytic lesion of bone can be either a brown tumor or a cyst when the patient has hyperparathyroidism. If weight-bearing bones are involved, the diagnosis must be made prior to parathyroidectomy in order to avert a possible pathological fracture. In the authors' patient, arteriography and computed tomography both demonstrated that the lesion in question was a brown tumor, which is hypervascular and clearly separable from a fluid-filled cyst; however, CT has the advantage of being a noninvasive procedure.
