Study of High-Transverse-Momentum Higgs Boson Production in Association with a Vector Boson in the qqbb Final State with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter presents the first study of Higgs boson production in association with a vector boson (V=W or Z) in the fully hadronic qqbb final state using data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137  fb^{-1}. The vector bosons and Higgs bosons are each reconstructed as large-radius jets and tagged using jet substructure techniques. Dedicated tagging algorithms exploiting b-tagging properties are used to identify jets consistent with Higgs bosons decaying into bb[over ¯]. Dominant backgrounds from multijet production are determined directly from the data, and a likelihood fit to the jet mass distribution of Higgs boson candidates is used to extract the number of signal events. The VH production cross section is measured inclusively and differentially in several ranges of Higgs boson transverse momentum: 250-450, 450-650, and greater than 650 GeV. The inclusive signal yield relative to the standard model expectation is observed to be μ=1.4_{-0.9}^{+1.0} and the corresponding cross section is 3.1±1.3(stat)_{-1.4}^{+1.8}(syst)  pb.

Measurement of the Centrality Dependence of the Dijet Yield in p+Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=8.16 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

ATLAS measured the centrality dependence of the dijet yield using 165  nb^{-1} of p+Pb data collected at sqrt[s_{NN}]=8.16  TeV in 2016. The event centrality, which reflects the p+Pb impact parameter, is characterized by the total transverse energy registered in the Pb-going side of the forward calorimeter. The central-to-peripheral ratio of the scaled dijet yields, R_{CP}, is evaluated, and the results are presented as a function of variables that reflect the kinematics of the initial hard parton scattering process. The R_{CP} shows a scaling with the Bjorken x of the parton originating from the proton, x_{p}, while no such trend is observed as a function of x_{Pb}. This analysis provides unique input to understanding the role of small proton spatial configurations in p+Pb collisions by covering parton momentum fractions from the valence region down to x_{p}∼10^{-3} and x_{Pb}∼4×10^{-4}.

Search for New Phenomena in Two-Body Invariant Mass Distributions Using Unsupervised Machine Learning for Anomaly Detection at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

Searches for new resonances are performed using an unsupervised anomaly-detection technique. Events with at least one electron or muon are selected from 140  fb^{-1} of pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV recorded by ATLAS at the Large Hadron Collider. The approach involves training an autoencoder on data, and subsequently defining anomalous regions based on the reconstruction loss of the decoder. Studies focus on nine invariant mass spectra that contain pairs of objects consisting of one light jet or b jet and either one lepton (e,μ), photon, or second light jet or b jet in the anomalous regions. No significant deviations from the background hypotheses are observed. Limits on contributions from generic Gaussian signals with various widths of the resonance mass are obtained for nine invariant masses in the anomalous regions.

Observation of WZγ Production in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of WZγ production and a measurement of its cross section using 140.1±1.2  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The WZγ production cross section, with both the W and Z bosons decaying leptonically, pp→WZγ→ℓ^{'}^{±}νℓ^{+}ℓ^{-}γ (ℓ^{(^{'})}=e, μ), is measured in a fiducial phase-space region defined such that the leptons and the photon have high transverse momentum and the photon is isolated. The cross section is found to be 2.01±0.30(stat)±0.16(syst)  fb. The corresponding standard model predicted cross section calculated at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and at leading order in the electroweak coupling constant is 1.50±0.06  fb. The observed significance of the WZγ signal is 6.3σ, compared with an expected significance of 5.0σ.

Combined Measurement of the Higgs Boson Mass from the H→γγ and H→ZZ^{*}→4ℓ Decay Channels with the ATLAS Detector Using sqrt[s]=7, 8, and 13 TeV pp Collision Data

A measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson combining the H→ZZ^{*}→4ℓ and H→γγ decay channels is presented. The result is based on 140  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector during LHC run 2 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV combined with the run 1 ATLAS mass measurement, performed at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, yielding a Higgs boson mass of 125.11±0.09(stat)±0.06(syst)=125.11±0.11  GeV. This corresponds to a 0.09% precision achieved on this fundamental parameter of the Standard Model of particle physics.

Search for Dark Photons in Rare Z Boson Decays with the ATLAS Detector

A search for events with a dark photon produced in association with a dark Higgs boson via rare decays of the standard model Z boson is presented, using 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The dark boson decays into a pair of dark photons, and at least two of the three dark photons must each decay into a pair of electrons or muons, resulting in at least two same-flavor opposite-charge lepton pairs in the final state. The data are found to be consistent with the background prediction, and upper limits are set on the dark photon's coupling to the dark Higgs boson times the kinetic mixing between the standard model photon and the dark photon, α_{D}ϵ^{2}, in the dark photon mass range of [5, 40] GeV except for the ϒ mass window [8.8, 11.1] GeV. This search explores new parameter space not previously excluded by other experiments.

Observation of Single-Top-Quark Production in Association with a Photon Using the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of single top quarks produced together with a photon, which directly probes the electroweak coupling of the top quark. The analysis uses 139  fb^{-1} of 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Requiring a photon with transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV and within the detector acceptance, the fiducial cross section is measured to be 688±23(stat) _{-71}^{+75}(syst)  fb, to be compared with the standard model prediction of 515_{-42}^{+36}  fb at next-to-leading order in QCD.

Measurement of Suppression of Large-Radius Jets and Its Dependence on Substructure in Pb+Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This letter presents a measurement of the nuclear modification factor of large-radius jets in sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV Pb+Pb collisions by the ATLAS experiment. The measurement is performed using 1.72  nb^{-1} and 257  pb^{-1} of Pb+Pb and pp data, respectively. Measurement of the Sensitivity of Two-Particle Correlations in pp Collisions to the Presence of Hard Scatterings

A key open question in the study of multiparticle production in high-energy pp collisions is the relationship between the "ridge"-i.e., the observed azimuthal correlations between particles in the underlying event that extend over all rapidities-and hard or semihard scattering processes. In particular, it is not known whether jets or their soft fragments are correlated with particles in the underlying event. To address this question, two-particle correlations are measured in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV using data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, with an integrated luminosity of 15.8  pb^{-1}, in two different configurations. In the first case, charged particles associated with jets are excluded from the correlation analysis, while in the second case, correlations are measured between particles within jets and charged particles from the underlying event. Second-order flow coefficients, v_{2}, are presented as a function of event multiplicity and transverse momentum. These measurements show that excluding particles associated with jets does not affect the measured correlations. Moreover, particles associated with jets do not exhibit any significant azimuthal correlations with the underlying event, ruling out hard processes contributing to the ridge.

Observation of an Excess of Dicharmonium Events in the Four-Muon Final State with the ATLAS Detector

A search is made for potential ccc[over ¯]c[over ¯] tetraquarks decaying into a pair of charmonium states in the four muon final state using proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140  fb^{-1} recorded by the ATLAS experiment at LHC. Two decay channels, J/ψ+J/ψ→4μ and J/ψ+ψ(2S)→4μ, are studied. Backgrounds are estimated based on a hybrid approach involving Monte Carlo simulations and data-driven methods. Statistically significant excesses with respect to backgrounds dominated by the single parton scattering are seen in the di-J/ψ channel consistent with a narrow resonance at 6.9 GeV and a broader structure at lower mass. A statistically significant excess is also seen in the J/ψ+ψ(2S) channel. The fitted masses and decay widths of the structures are reported.

Observation of the γγ→ττ Process in Pb+Pb Collisions and Constraints on the τ-Lepton Anomalous Magnetic Moment with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of τ-lepton-pair production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions Pb+Pb→Pb(γγ→ττ)Pb and constraints on the τ-lepton anomalous magnetic moment a_{τ}. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.44  nb^{-1} of LHC Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2018. Selected events contain one muon from a τ-lepton decay, an electron or charged-particle track(s) from the other τ-lepton decay, little additional central-detector activity, and no forward neutrons. The γγ→ττ process is observed in Pb+Pb collisions with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations and a signal strength of μ_{ττ}=1.03_{-0.05}^{+0.06} assuming the standard model value for a_{τ}. To measure a_{τ}, a template fit to the muon transverse-momentum distribution from τ-lepton candidates is performed, using a dimuon (γγ→μμ) control sample to constrain systematic uncertainties. Strong Constraints on Jet Quenching in Centrality-Dependent p+Pb Collisions at 5.02 TeV from ATLAS

Jet quenching is the process of color-charged partons losing energy via interactions with quark-gluon plasma droplets created in heavy-ion collisions. The collective expansion of such droplets is well described by viscous hydrodynamics. Similar evidence of collectivity is consistently observed in smaller collision systems, including pp and p+Pb collisions. In contrast, while jet quenching is observed in Pb+Pb collisions, no evidence has been found in these small systems to date, raising fundamental questions about the nature of the system created in these collisions. The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider has measured the yield of charged hadrons correlated with reconstructed jets in 0.36  nb^{-1} of p+Pb and 3.6  pb^{-1} of pp collisions at 5.02 TeV. The yields of charged hadrons with p_{T}^{ch}>0.5  GeV near and opposite in azimuth to jets with p_{T}^{jet}>30 or 60 GeV, and the ratios of these yields between p+Pb and pp collisions, I_{pPb}, are reported. The collision centrality of p+Pb events is categorized by the energy deposited by forward neutrons from the struck nucleus. The I_{pPb} values are consistent with unity within a few percent for hadrons with p_{T}^{ch}>4  GeV at all centralities. These data provide new, strong constraints that preclude almost any parton energy loss in central p+Pb collisions.

Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons in Decays of W Bosons Using a Dilepton Displaced Vertex in sqrt[s]=13 TeV pp Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

A search for a long-lived, heavy neutral lepton (N) in 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is reported. The N is produced via W→Nμ or W→Ne and decays into two charged leptons and a neutrino, forming a displaced vertex. The N mass is used to discriminate between signal and background. Test of CP Invariance in Higgs Boson Vector-Boson-Fusion Production Using the H→γγ Channel with the ATLAS Detector

A test of CP invariance in Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion has been performed in the H→γγ channel using 139  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The optimal observable method is used to probe the CP structure of interactions between the Higgs boson and electroweak gauge bosons, as described by an effective field theory. No sign of CP violation is observed in the data. Constraints are set on the parameters describing the strength of the CP-odd component in the coupling between the Higgs boson and the electroweak gauge bosons in two effective field theory bases: d[over ˜] in the HISZ basis and c_{HW[over ˜]} in the Warsaw basis. The results presented are the most stringent constraints on CP violation in the coupling between Higgs and weak bosons. The 95% C.L. constraint on d[over ˜] is derived for the first time and the 95% C.L. constraint on c_{HW[over ˜]} has been improved by a factor of 5 compared to the previous measurement.

No significant influence of pre-vaccination antipyretic use on specific antibody response to a BNT162b2 vaccine booster against COVID-19

The influence of antipyretic use before a BNT162b2 booster is of concern.

The relation between pre-vaccination antipyretic use and antibody responses to SARS-CoV-2 vaccination has been unclear. We measured the pre- and post-BNT162b2 booster spike-specific IgG titers and recorded antipyretic use and adverse reactions for SARS-CoV-2-naive hospital healthcare workers. The data of 20 cases who used antipyretics within 24 h before vaccination were compared to that of 281 controls. The post-booster geometric mean IgG titers were 15,559 AU/mL (95 % CI, 11,474–21,203) for the cases and 16,850 AU/mL (95 % CI, 15,563–18,243) for the controls (p = 0.622). No significant reduction in the frequency or severity of any of the solicited adverse reactions was found for the cases. Similar results were obtained after adjustment with propensity-score matching for demographic characteristics, baseline IgG titer, and post-vaccination antipyretic use. Antipyretic use within 24 h before vaccination would not affect mRNA COVID-19 vaccine-induced specific antibody responses and that postponement of vaccination due to pre-vaccination antipyretic use would be unnecessary.

Correlation of Postvaccination Fever With Specific Antibody Response to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 BNT162b2 Booster and No Significant Influence of Antipyretic Medication

BACKGROUND

A severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) mRNA vaccine booster elicits sufficient antibody responses that protect against coronavirus disease 2019, whereas adverse reactions such as fever have been commonly reported. Associations between adverse reactions and antibody responses have not been fully characterized, nor has the influence of antipyretic use.

METHODS

This is a prospective observational cohort study in Japan, following our prior investigation of BNT162b2 2-dose primary series. Spike-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) titers were measured for SARS-CoV-2-naive hospital healthcare workers who received a BNT162b2 booster. The severity of solicited adverse reactions, including the highest body temperature, and self-medicated antipyretics were reported daily for 7 days following vaccination through a web-based self-reporting diary.

RESULTS

The data of 281 healthcare workers were available. Multivariate analysis extracted fever after the booster dose (β = .305, P < .001) as being significantly correlated with the specific IgG titers. The analysis of 164 participants with data from the primary series showed that fever after the second dose was associated with the emergence of fever after the booster dose (relative risk, 3.97 [95% confidence interval, 2.48-6.35]); however, the IgG titers after the booster dose were not associated with the presence or degree of fever after the second dose. There were no significant differences in the IgG titers by the use, type, or dosage of antipyretic medication.

CONCLUSIONS

These results suggest an independent correlation between mRNA vaccine-induced specific IgG levels and post-booster vaccination fever, without any significant influence of fever after the primary series. Antipyretic medications for adverse reactions should not interfere with the elevation of specific IgG titers.

Observation of WWW Production in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of WWW production and a measurement of its cross section using 139  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with two same-sign leptons (electrons or muons) and at least two jets, as well as events with three charged leptons, are selected. A multivariate technique is then used to discriminate between signal and background events. Events from WWW production are observed with a significance of 8.0 standard deviations, where the expectation is 5.4 standard deviations. The inclusive WWW production cross section is measured to be 820±100 (stat)±80 (syst)  fb, approximately 2.6 standard deviations from the predicted cross section of 511±18  fb calculated at next-to-leading-order QCD and leading-order electroweak accuracy.

Post-vaccination antibody evaluation for nosocomial SARS-CoV-2 delta variant breakthrough infection

Waning humoral immunity after mRNA vaccination against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a significant problem for public health. Breakthrough infection in hospitals over several months after vaccination has not been fully characterized, especially against the delta (B.1.617.2) variant. Here, we describe an outbreak in our hospital in September of 2021, mainly through serological evaluation of the breakthrough infection. This retrospective observational study was done at an emergency and acute care hospital with 204 beds and 486 staff members where most staff members (92.6%) had had their second BNT162b2 vaccination by May of 2021. The peri-infection anti-spike RBD protein IgG (anti-S IgG) titers (lowest values between 11 days before and 7 days after onset or diagnosis) of serum samples from the breakthrough-infected persons were quantified. We also logarithmically estimated the anti-S IgG titers during the exposure period in September of uninfected staff members from their samples collected in May and December 2021. Whole-genome sequencing was done on obtained samples. In this outbreak, twelve persons (ten inpatients and two staff members) were diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection by Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) or RT-PCR, eight of whom had been vaccinated twice. Peri-infection anti-S IgG titers could be determined in seven of the eight breakthrough cases, with a geometric mean titer (GMT) of 1,034 AU/ml (95% confidence interval [CI], 398 to 2,686). Among 289 uninfected staff members with data from the two sampling points, the GMT of the estimated anti-S IgG titers during the exposure period in 51 staff members, who were working at the outbreak ward and potentially exposed but uninfected, and 238 other unexposed staff members were 1,458 AU/ml (95% CI, 1,196 to 1,777) and 1,628 AU/ml (95% CI, 1,500 to 1,766), respectively. All viruses from the eight samples for which whole-genome sequencing was available were identified as delta variants. Of the infected persons, one remained asymptomatic throughout the course of treatment, and eleven had an illness of mild to moderate severity, including ten who received monoclonal antibody cocktail (Casirivimab/imdevimab) therapy. Measurement and estimation of anti-spike antibody levels after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination would be helpful for evaluating the risk of breakthrough infection and for determining the necessity of booster vaccination.

A detailed map of Higgs boson interactions by the ATLAS experiment ten years after the discovery

The standard model of particle physics1-4 describes the known fundamental particles and forces that make up our Universe, with the exception of gravity. One of the central features of the standard model is a field that permeates all of space and interacts with fundamental particles5-9. The quantum excitation of this field, known as the Higgs field, manifests itself as the Higgs boson, the only fundamental particle with no spin. In 2012, a particle with properties consistent with the Higgs boson of the standard model was observed by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN10,11. Since then, more than 30 times as many Higgs bosons have been recorded by the ATLAS experiment, enabling much more precise measurements and new tests of the theory. Here, on the basis of this larger dataset, we combine an unprecedented number of production and decay processes of the Higgs boson to scrutinize its interactions with elementary particles. Interactions with gluons, photons, and W and Z bosons-the carriers of the strong, electromagnetic and weak forces-are studied in detail. Interactions with three third-generation matter particles (bottom (b) and top (t) quarks, and tau leptons (τ)) are well measured and indications of interactions with a second-generation particle (muons, μ) are emerging. These tests reveal that the Higgs boson discovered ten years ago is remarkably consistent with the predictions of the theory and provide stringent constraints on many models of new phenomena beyond the standard model.

Relation of fever intensity and antipyretic use with specific antibody response after two doses of the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine

BACKGROUND

The reactogenicity of BNT162b2 COVID-19 vaccine has been commonly reported and antipyretic medications are often used for mitigating adverse reactions. Possible associations between the reactogenicity events and specific antibody responses have not been fully investigated, nor has the influence of using antipyretics.

METHODS

Serum samples were collected from hospital healthcare workers with no COVID-19 history and the SARS-CoV-2 spike-specific IgG titer after two doses was measured. Degree of solicited adverse reactions in a day, including the highest body temperature, were reported using a self-reporting diary for five days after each dose. The highest body temperature during the five days was divided into three grades (<37.0 °C, 37.0-37.9 °C, or ≥ 38.0 °C). Self-medicated antipyretics were reported using a questionnaire.

RESULTS

The data of 335 participants were available for analysis. Multivariate analysis extracted the fever grade after the second dose (standardized coefficient beta = 0.301, p < 0.0001), female sex (beta = 0.196, p = 0.0014), and age (beta = -0.119, p = 0.0495) as being significantly correlated with the IgG titers. The positive correlation of the fever grade after the second dose with the IgG titers was also observed when analyzed by sex and age. The use of antipyretics did not interfere with the IgG titers irrespective of the fever grade.

CONCLUSIONS

The fever intensity after the second dose was associated with the IgG titer and antipyretic medications may be beneficial to mitigate the suffering from adverse reactions, without interfering with the acquisition of sufficient antibody responses.

Search for Lepton-Flavor Violation in Z-Boson Decays with τ Leptons with the ATLAS Detector

A search for lepton-flavor-violating Z→eτ and Z→μτ decays with pp collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. This analysis uses 139  fb^{-1} of Run 2 pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV and is combined with the results of a similar ATLAS search in the final state in which the τ lepton decays hadronically, using the same data set as well as Run 1 data. The addition of leptonically decaying τ leptons significantly improves the sensitivity reach for Z→ℓτ decays. The Z→ℓτ branching fractions are constrained in this analysis to B(Z→eτ)<7.0×10^{-6} and B(Z→μτ)<7.2×10^{-6} at 95% confidence level. The combination with the previously published analyses sets the strongest constraints to date: B(Z→eτ)<5.0×10^{-6} and B(Z→μτ)<6.5×10^{-6} at 95% confidence level.

Search for New Phenomena in Final States with Two Leptons and One or No b-Tagged Jets at sqrt[s]=13 TeV Using the ATLAS Detector

A search for new phenomena is presented in final states with two leptons and one or no b-tagged jets. The event selection requires the two leptons to have opposite charge, the same flavor (electrons or muons), and a large invariant mass. The analysis is based on the full run-2 proton-proton collision dataset recorded at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=13  TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139  fb^{-1}. No significant deviation from the expected background is observed in the data. Inspired by the B-meson decay anomalies, a four-fermion contact interaction between two quarks (b, s) and two leptons (ee or μμ) is used as a benchmark signal model, which is characterized by the energy scale and coupling, Λ and g_{*}, respectively. Contact interactions with Λ/g_{*} lower than 2.0 (2.4) TeV are excluded for electrons (muons) at the 95% confidence level, still far below the value that is favored by the B-meson decay anomalies. Model-independent limits are set as a function of the minimum dilepton invariant mass, which allow the results to be reinterpreted in various signal scenarios.

Search for Displaced Leptons in sqrt[s]=13 TeV pp Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

A search for charged leptons with large impact parameters using 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV pp collision data from the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented, addressing a long-standing gap in coverage of possible new physics signatures. Results are consistent with the background prediction. This search provides unique sensitivity to long-lived scalar supersymmetric lepton partners (sleptons). For lifetimes of 0.1 ns, selectron, smuon, and stau masses up to 720, 680, and 340  GeV, respectively, are excluded at 95% confidence level, drastically improving on the previous best limits from LEP.

Search for Dark Matter Produced in Association with a Dark Higgs Boson Decaying into W^{±}W^{∓} or ZZ in Fully Hadronic Final States from sqrt[s]=13 TeV pp Collisions Recorded with the ATLAS Detector

Several extensions of the Standard Model predict the production of dark matter particles at the LHC. An uncharted signature of dark matter particles produced in association with VV=W^{±}W^{∓} or ZZ pairs from a decay of a dark Higgs boson s is searched for using 139  fb^{-1} of pp collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The s→V(qq[over ¯])V(qq[over ¯]) decays are reconstructed with a novel technique aimed at resolving the dense topology from boosted VV pairs using jets in the calorimeter and tracking information. Dark Higgs scenarios with m_{s}>160  GeV are excluded.

Observation and Measurement of Forward Proton Scattering in Association with Lepton Pairs Produced via the Photon Fusion Mechanism at ATLAS

The observation of forward proton scattering in association with lepton pairs (e^{+}e^{-}+p or μ^{+}μ^{-}+p) produced via photon fusion is presented. The scattered proton is detected by the ATLAS Forward Proton spectrometer, while the leptons are reconstructed by the central ATLAS detector. Proton-proton collision data recorded in 2017 at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=13  TeV are analyzed, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 14.6  fb^{-1}. A total of 57 (123) candidates in the ee+p (μμ+p) final state are selected, allowing the background-only hypothesis to be rejected with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations in each channel. Proton-tagging techniques are introduced for cross-section measurements in the fiducial detector acceptance, corresponding to σ_{ee+p}=11.0±2.6(stat)±1.2(syst)±0.3(lumi) and σ_{μμ+p}=7.2±1.6(stat)±0.9(syst)±0.2(lumi)  fb in the dielectron and dimuon channel, respectively.

The effects of once-weekly teriparatide on hip structure and biomechanical properties assessed by CT

SUMMARY

Once-weekly administration of 56.5 μg teriparatide improved cortical bone parameters and biomechanical parameters at the proximal femur by CT geometry analysis.

INTRODUCTION

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of weekly administration of teriparatide [human PTH (1-34)] on bone geometry, volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD), and parameters of bone strength at the proximal femur which were longitudinally investigated using computed tomography (CT).

METHODS

The subjects were a subgroup of a recent, randomly assigned, double-blind study (578 subjects) comparing the anti-fracture efficacy of a once-weekly subcutaneous injection of 56.5 μg teriparatide with placebo (TOWER trial).

RESULTS

Sixty-six ambulatory postmenopausal women with osteoporosis were enrolled at 15 study sites having multi-detector row CT, and included women injected with teriparatide (n = 29, 74.2 ± 5.1 years) or with placebo (n = 37, 74.8 ± 5.3 years). CT data were obtained at baseline and follow-up scans were performed at 48 and 72 weeks. The data were analyzed to obtain cross-sectional densitometric, geometric, and biomechanical parameters including the section modulus (SM) and buckling ratio (BR) of the femoral neck, inter-trochanter, and femoral shaft. We found that once-weekly teriparatide increased cortical thickness/cross-sectional area (CSA) and total area, and improved biomechanical properties (i.e., decreasing BR) at the femoral neck and shaft. Teriparatide did not change the cortical perimeter.

CONCLUSIONS

Our longitudinal analysis of proximal femur geometry by CT revealed that once-weekly administration of 56.5 μg teriparatide improved cortical bone parameters at the femoral neck and shaft and also improved biomechanical parameters.

Evaluation of inosin-5'-monophosphate dehydrogenase activity during maintenance therapy with tacrolimus

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to identify a target range for inosin-5'-monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH) activity in maintenance therapy with tacrolimus (TCL), and to apply the measurement of IMPDH activity to the therapeutic drug monitoring for mycophenolate mofetil (MMF).

METHODS

Eleven patients with renal transplants and 10 healthy volunteers were investigated. All patients were treated with a combination of TCL, steroid and MMF for 2 months after transplantation, and were in stable and good condition. IMPDH activity was determined indirectly by measuring xanthosine 5'-monophophate in cell lysates supplemented with IMP and beta-nicotine adenine dinucleotide using an high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method.

RESULTS

The within-run reproducibility of the assay was excellent, with relative standard deviation (RSD) values of 0.41-4.08%. The mean differences between the spiked concentrations of xanthosine 5'-monophophate and their real values (mean relative errors; MREs) were within a range of 2.66-8.89%, showing good accuracy. The interday RSD values were 1.51-6.12% and MREs ranged from 2.10% to 8.89%. Cell lysates showed a 5-6 nmol/L IC(50) mycophenolic acid (MPA) concentration. TCL, cyclosporine and prednisolone did not affect IMPDH activity. The peak MPA concentration was achieved at 1 h after dosing. IMPDH activity decreased to 75% and 67% at 1 and 2 h after dosing respectively. Therefore, the inhibition rates of MPA against IMPDH activity may be adequate at 25-40% in TCL maintenance therapy.

CONCLUSION

Inosin-5'-monophosphate dehydrogenase activity in cell lysates could be reliably determined by HPLC. A 25-40% inhibition of IMPDH activity may be an appropriate range for preventing rejection with MPF but this requires further validation using larger studies with harder outcomes such as rejection episodes.

Tacrolimus is effective for lupus nephritis patients with persistent proteinuria

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the safety and potential efficacy of tacrolimus for the treatment of patients with lupus nephritis and persistent proteinuria.

METHODS

A total of 23 Japanese patients with lupus nephritis (21 females/2 males) were enrolled in this study. Patients were administered tacrolimus at a dose of 2-3 mg once daily after the evening meal for 6 months. The dose of tacrolimus was unchanged throughout the study period. Concomitant prednisolone therapy was unchanged or gradually tapered, while other immunosuppressants were stopped at the start of tacrolimus treatment.

RESULTS

Tacrolimus was well tolerated, and none of the patients developed adverse drug reactions that required discontinuation of the study. Daily urinary protein loss, the U-prot/U-creat ratio, and serum albumin were significantly improved after 4 months, 3 months, and 1 month of treatment with tacrolimus (p<0.05), respectively, and the improvement persisted until 6 months. The serum complement hemolytic activity (CH50), complement C3 level, and CRP level were also significantly improved after treatment with tacrolimus (p<0.05). Improvement of the U-prot/U-creat ratio was most prominent for patients who were in WHO class IV.

CONCLUSIONS

Tacrolimus is safe and effective as maintenance therapy for patients with lupus nephritis, at least for 6 months. A larger randomised, controlled trial over a longer period is needed to confirm these results.

A feasibility study of intravenous (IV) paclitaxel, intraperitoneal (IP) carboplatin, and IP paclitaxel in patients with epithelial ovarian carcinoma, fallopian tube carcinoma, or peritoneal carcinoma

Background: This is a feasibility study for a future trial to assess the feasibility of intravenous (IV) paclitaxel, intraperitoneal (IP) carboplatin and IP paclitaxel (TCipTip therapy) in patients with epithelial ovarian carcinoma, fallopian tube carcinoma or peritoneal carcinoma. Methods: The patients eligible for this study had histologically confirmed, stage IC-IV epithelial ovarian carcinoma, fallopian tube carcinoma or peritoneal carcinoma. IV paclitaxel was administered at 135 mg/m2 followed by IP carboplatin administration based on the area under the curve =6 on day1, and IP paclitaxel was administered at 60 mg/m2 on day 8. To ensure the safety, the three initial patients received 45 mg/m2 of IP paclitaxel on day 8. The toxicity grade was determined by CTCAE version 3. This study has been approved by the institutional review committee. Results: During November 2007 and December 2008, 10 patients were entered in this study. The patients included 7 epithelial ovarian carcinoma (stage IC, 2; stage IIIC, 5), 2 stage IIIC primary peritoneal carcinoma, and 1 stage IIA fallopian tube carcinoma. There were 7 serous adenocarcinoma, 2 endometrioid adenocarcinoma, 1 clear cell adenocarcinoma. The incidences of grade 3/4 hematological toxicities were 48% for neutropenia, 28% for thrombocytopenia, and 48% for anemia. Grade 3/4 neurotoxicity, abdominal pain nor IP catheter related toxicity was not observed. IP paclitaxel at 2nd or 3rd cycle was skipped in 4 patients by grade 3/4 neutropenia (grade 3, 3; grade 4, 1 ). Conclusions: TCipTip therapy is feasible for patients with epithelial ovarian carcinoma, fallopian tube carcinoma or peritoneal carcinoma.

249 FOLLICLE-STIMULATING HORMONE AND DIBUTYRYL cAMP TREATMENTS DURING IN VITRO MATURATION IMPROVE THE DEVELOPMENTAL COMPETENCE OF MOUSE OOCYTES

The high level of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), which is provided to the oocytes from cumulus cells via gap junctional complexes in cumulus-enclosed oocytes (CEOs), is known to contribute to meiotic arrest at the germinal vesicle (GV) stage of CEOs. However, whether intraoocyte cAMP during the period of in vitro maturation (IVM) affects postfertilization developmental competence of mouse oocytes still remains unclear. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of FSH or dibutyryl cAMP (dbcAMP) treatment during IVM on in vitro development of mouse oocytes after in vitro fertilization (IVF). Whether a junctional association between cumulus cells and the oocyte would be essential for a cytoplasmic maturation-promoting effect was also examined. CEOs were isolated from and eCG-primed 3-week-old ICR mouse by rupturing preovulatory follicles with needles in M16 medium with 5% FCS and essential and nonessential amino acids (basal medium). IVM media used were basal medium without (control) or with 100 µm dbcAMP or 1 IU mL–1 FSH. Carbenoxolone (100 µm, CBX), an inhibitor of gap junction, was used to inhibit a junctional association between cumulus cells and the oocyte. Denuded oocytes (DOs) were prepared by repeatedly pipetting in basal medium with 0.2% hyaluronidase. CEOs and DOs were cultured in IVM media at 37�C under 5% CO2 in air for 16.5 h, and then transferred to TYH medium (a modified Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate medium) containing 0.4% BSA, followed by insemination with capacitated sperm. After 6 h of IVF, inseminated oocytes were cultured in KSOM medium with 0.3% BSA. Development to the 2-cell and blastocyst stages was estimated at 24 h and 120 h after IVF, respectively. All experiments were done in 3 replicates, and the statistical analysis was carried out by ANOVA and Fisher's protected least-squares difference (PLSD) test. When CEOs were matured in IVM media, the rates of postfertilization development to the 2-cell and blastocyst stages of oocytes matured in the control medium were very low(29% and 13%, respectively), whereas those of oocytes matured with FSH or dbcAMP significantly increased (FSH: 61% and 52%, dbcAMP: 63 and 57%, respectively, v. control; P < 0.05). Next, when CEOs were matured in basal medium with 1 IU mL–1 FSH and 100 µm CBX, the developmental rate to the 2-cell stage (56%) was similar to that in medium with FSH alone (61%) but the rate to the blastocyst stage (40%) was little lower compared with that in medium with FSH alone (52%), although not significantly different (P > 0.05). Furthermore, when DOs were matured in IVM media, the developmental rates to the blastocyst stage after IVF of the oocytes matured with FSH or dbcAMP significantly increased (FSH: 25%, dbcAMP: 15%; P < 0.05) compared with those in control medium (7%). Taken together, it is suggested that increasing the concentration of intraoocyte cAMP during the IVM period is important to improve the developmental competence after IVF of mouse oocytes, and that the competence is acquired in part in a cumulus-oocyte junctional communication-independent manner.

349 DEVELOPMENTAL COMPETENCE AFTER IVF OF CUMULUS-ENCLOSED OOCYTES FROM A ICR MOUSE STRAIN CULTURED WITH A LOW CONCENTRATION OF HYPOXANTHINE DURING IVM

Hypoxanthine (HX, 4 mM) is known to contribute to meiotic arrest at the germinal vesicle (GV) stage of cumulus-enclosed oocytes (CEOs) cultured in vitro by causing accumulation of cAMP within the oocytes. Recently, it was found that when CEOs at the GV stage from the ICR mouse strain were treated with a small amount of HX (200 �M) during in vitro maturation (IVM) culture, cortical granule migration was much improved. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of treatment of ICR mouse CEOs with 200 �M HX during IVM culture on the in vitro development of oocytes after in vitro fertilization (IVF). CEOs were isolated from eCG-primed 3-week-old ICR mice by rupturing preovulatory follicles with needles in M16 medium containing 5% FCS, 1 IU mL-1 FSH, and essential and nonessential amino acids (basal medium). IVM media were basal medium without (control) or with 200 �M HX, 100 �M dibutyryl cyclic adenosine monophosphate (dbcAMP), or 10 IU mL-1 FSH. Denuded oocytes (DOs) were prepared by treating CEOs for 30 min with 0.1% hyaluronidase and 0.1 mM EDTA, followed by repeated pipetting. CEOs and DOs were cultured in IVM media at 37�C under 5% CO2 in air for 16.5 h. After IVM, CEOs and DOs were transferred to TYH medium (modified Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate) containing 0.4% BSA, and inseminated with capacitated sperm. After 6 h of IVF, zygotes were freed from cumulus cells by gently pipetting, and cultured in KSOM medium with 0.3% BSA. Development to the 2-cell and blastocyst stages was determined at 24 h and 120 h after IVF, respectively. All experiments included 3 replicates, and the statistical analysis was carried out by ANOVA and Fisher&apos;s PLSD test. When CEOs matured in basal medium (controls), although almost all of the oocytes reached the MII stage, the rates of their post-fertilization development to the 2-cell and blastocyst stages were very low (21.8% and 8.9%, respectively), whereas those of CEOs matured with 200 �M HX were significantly increased (63.4% and 52.2%, respectively; P &lt; 0.05). Next, CEOs were cultured with 100 �M dbcAMP or a high concentration (10 IU mL-1) of FSH during IVM. The rates of the 2-cell and blastocyst stages of CEOs cultured with 100 �M dbcAMP were 53.3% and 41.3%, respectively, and those of CEOs cultured with 10 IU mL-1 FSH were 55.5% and 27.6%, respectively. Although the blastocyst rate was significantly lower in FSH-treated oocytes than in HX- or dbcAMP-treated oocytes (P &lt; 0.05), this result suggests that increasing concentration of intracellular cAMP is important for improving the developmental competence of mouse CEOs after IVF. Finally, when DOs were cultured with 200 �M HX, although most of the oocytes were arrested at the MI stage, 6.3% of the oocytes developed into 2-cell embryos after IVF but not into blastocysts. Therefore, it is suggested that some accumulation of cAMP in cumulus cells by 200 �M HX enhances fertility and post-fertilization development of oocytes in the ICR mouse strain.

Involvement of de novo ceramide synthesis in radiocontrast-induced renal tubular cell injury

We reported previously that various radiocontrast media cause apoptosis in porcine proximal tubular (LLC-PK(1)) cells, in which reduction in B-cell lymphoma (Bcl)-2 expression and caspase-3 activation are implicated. In the present study, we investigated a role for ceramide in radiocontrast media-induced apoptosis in renal tubular cells. LLC-PK(1) cells were exposed to radiocontrast media for 30 min, followed by incubation for 24 h in normal medium. Cell viability was assessed by 2-(2-methoxy-4-nitrophenyl)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)-5-(2,4-disulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium monosodium salt assay, while apoptosis was determined by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling stain. Immunofluorescent stains were performed using antibodies against phosphorylated Akt (pAkt) and cAMP response element binding protein (CREB) (pCREB), and ceramide. The mRNA expression and protein content of Bcl-2 were determined by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and enzyme immunoassay, respectively. In vivo model of contrast-induced renal injury was induced in mice with unilateral renal occlusion. The cell injury induced by the nonionic radiocontrast medium ioversol was reversed by inhibiting de novo ceramide synthesis with fumonisin B(1) (FB(1)) and L-cycloserine, but not by suppressing sphingomyelin breakdown with D609. FB(1) reversed ioversol-induced decrease in the immunoreactivities of pAkt and pCREB, reduction in Bcl-2 expression and caspase-3 activation. Like ioversol, C2 ceramide and the Akt inhibitor Src homology-6 induced apoptosis by reducing pAkt and pCREB-like immunoreactivities, lowering Bcl-2 expression and enhancing caspase-3 activity. Indeed, various radiocontrast media, excluding iodixanol which showed the least nephrotoxicity, enhanced ceramide-like immunoreactivity. The role for de novo ceramide synthesis was also shown in the in vivo model of radiocontrast nephropathy. We demonstrated here for the first time that the enhancement of de novo ceramide synthesis contributes to radiocontrast nephropathy.

Fenofibrate induces apoptotic injury in cultured human hepatocytes by inhibiting phosphorylation of Akt

Fibric acid derivatives have a potent and effective lipid-lowering action, however, the use of these compounds is sometimes limited due to the occurrence of hepatic injury. In the present study, we characterized cell injury induced by fenofibrate in cultured human hepatocytes. Fenofibrate caused a loss of cell viability and nuclear damage as assessed by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end-labeling or by DNA electrophoresis, in which caspase activation is involved. The cell injury was accompanied by the shrinkage and the translocation of phosphatidyl serine from inner membrane to the outer membrane as determined by annexin V stain. The mRNA expression for bcl-2 was reduced by fenofibrate. An immunofluorescent stain with antiserum raised against phosphorylated Akt revealed that fenofibrate inhibited insulin-stimulated phosphorylation of Akt. Like fenofibrate, several compounds that inhibit the phosphorylation of Akt, including wortmannin, SH-6 and a high concentration (100 microM) of SB203580, reduced the viability of cultured human hepatocytes. Both nuclear damage and cell injury induced by fenofibrate were reversed by insulin in a concentration-dependent manner. In contrast, bezafibrate or 8(S)-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid had no hepatotoxic action. These findings suggest that fenofibrate causes caspase-dependent apoptosis in human hepatocytes by inhibiting phosphorylation of Akt, in which PPARalpha is not involved.

Inclusive double-pomeron exchange at the fermilab tevatron p p collider

We report results from a study of events with a double-Pomeron exchange topology produced in p p collisions at sqrt[s]=1800 GeV. The events are characterized by a leading antiproton and a large rapidity gap on the outgoing proton side. We find that the differential production cross section agrees in shape with predictions based on Regge theory and factorization, and that the ratio of double-Pomeron exchange to single diffractive production rates is relatively unsuppressed as compared to the O(10) suppression factor previously measured in single diffractive production.

Observation of the narrow state X(3872)-->J/psipi+pi- in pp collisions at sqaure root of s=1.96 TeV

We report the observation of a narrow state decaying into J/psipi+pi- and produced in 220 pb(-1) of p p-bar collisions at =1.96 Tesqaure root of sV in the CDF II experiment. We observe 730+/-90 decays. The mass is measured to be 3871.3+/-0.7(stat)+/-0.4(syst) MeV/c2, with an observed width consistent with the detector resolution. This is in agreement with the recent observation by the Belle Collaboration of the X(3872) meson.

Delayed adverse reactions to iodinated radiographic contrast media after coronary angiography: a search for possible risk factors

OBJECTIVE

The incidence of and risk factors for delayed adverse events (DAEs) that appear from 1 h to 7 days after injection of radiographic contrast media were investigated in patients who had undergone coronary angiography (CAG).

METHODS

DAEs were monitored by questionnaire in 155 patients who received iomeprol. Isosorbide dinitrate was injected in every case. Risk factors for DAEs were analysed by a logistic regression model.

RESULTS

Of 118 patients who returned questionnaires, 54 complained of DAEs, although no severe or fatal reactions occurred. Erythema, rash and nausea were frequent events. Female gender, total dose of isosorbide dinitrate <2 mg, and execution of acetylcholine provocation test were found to be the major risk factors, and the incidence of DAEs increased as the number of risk factors increased.

CONCLUSION

Care should be taken when CAG is performed on female patients who undergo acetylcholine provocation tests and receive low-dose nitric oxide donor injections.

Search for Kaluza-Klein graviton emission in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV using the missing energy signature

We report on a search for direct Kaluza-Klein graviton production in a data sample of 84 pb(-1) of ppmacr; collisions at sqrt[s]=1.8 TeV, recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We investigate the final state of large missing transverse energy and one or two high energy jets. We compare the data with the predictions from a (3+1+n)-dimensional Kaluza-Klein scenario in which gravity becomes strong at the TeV scale. At 95% confidence level (C.L.) for n=2, 4, and 6 we exclude an effective Planck scale below 1.0, 0.77, and 0.71 TeV, respectively.

Search for pair production of scalar top quarks in R-parity violating decay modes in pp collisions at square root of s=1.8 TeV

We present the results of a search for pair production of scalar top quarks (t(1)) in an R-parity violating supersymmetry scenario in 106 pb(-1) of pp collisions at square root of s=1.8 TeV collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. In this mode each t(1) decays into a tau lepton and a b quark. We search for events with two tau's, one decaying leptonically (e or mu) and one decaying hadronically, and two jets. No candidate events pass our final selection criteria. We set a 95% confidence level lower limit on the t(1) mass at 122 GeV/c(2) for Br(t(1)-->tau b)=1.

Measurement of prompt charm meson production cross sections in pp collisions at square root s = 1.96 TeV

We report on measurements of differential cross sections dsigma/dp(T) for prompt charm meson production in ppmacr; collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV using 5.8+/-0.3 pb(-1) of data from the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The data are collected with a new trigger that is sensitive to the long lifetime of hadrons containing heavy flavor. The charm meson cross sections are measured in the central rapidity region |y|</=1 in four fully reconstructed decay modes: D0-->K-pi(+), D(*+)-->D0pi(+), D+-->K-pi(+)pi(+), D(+)(s)-->phipi(+), and their charge conjugates. The measured cross sections are compared to theoretical calculations.

Search for lepton flavor violating decays of a heavy neutral particle in p(-)p collisions at sqrt[s]=1.8 TeV

We report on a search for a high mass, narrow width particle that decays directly to emu, etau, or microtau. We use approximately 110 pb(-1) of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab from 1992 to 1995. No evidence of lepton flavor violating decays is found. Limits are set on the production and decay of sneutrinos with R-parity violating interactions.

Central pseudorapidity gaps in events with a leading antiproton at the fermilab tevatron pp collider

We report a measurement of the fraction of events with a large pseudorapidity gap deltaeta within the pseudorapidity region available to the proton dissociation products X in p+p-->p+X. For a final state p of fractional momentum loss xi(p) and 4-momentum transfer squared t(p) within 0.06<xi(p)<0.09 and |t(p)|<1.0 [0.2] GeV2 at sqrt[s]=1800 [630] GeV, the fraction of events with deltaeta>3 is found to be 0.246+/-0.001 (stat)+/-0.042 (syst) [0.184+/-0.001 (stat)+/-0.043 (syst)]. Our results are compared with gap fractions measured in minimum bias pp collisions and with theoretical expectations.

Search for the supersymmetric partner of the top quark in dilepton events from pp collisions at square root of s=1.8 TeV

We have searched for pair production of the supersymmetric partner of the top quark (stop) in 107 pb(-1) of pp collisions at square root of s=1.8 TeV collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). Each stop is assumed to decay into a lepton, bottom quark, and supersymmetric neutrino. Such a scenario would give rise to events with two leptons, two hadronic jets, and a substantial imbalance of transverse energy. No evidence of such a stop signal has been found. We exclude stop masses in the region (80</=m(t)</=135 GeV/c(2)) in the mass plane of stop versus sneutrino.

Search for associated production of Upsilon and vector boson in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.8 TeV

We present a search for associated production of the Upsilon(1S) and a vector boson in 83 pb(-1) of ppmacr; collisions at sqrt[s]=1.8 TeV collected by the CDF experiment in 1994-1995. We find no evidence of the searched signal in the data, and set upper limits to the production cross sections.
