Abstract
Three homologous achiral five-ring bent-core mesogens are presented where 4-chlororesorcinol is the central core and the aromatic rings are linked by ester groups. These compounds form smectic phases with a tilted arrangement of the molecules (tilt angle approximately 45 degrees). On cooling the isotropic liquid this phase adopts a fan-like texture which shows for two homologues at relatively high electric fields ( 25-35 V microm(-1)) an antiferroelectric electro-optical response based on the collective rotation of the molecules around their long axes. At lower temperature the application of a sufficiently high electric field leads to a continuous transition into a non-birefringent texture which exhibits randomly distributed domains of opposite handedness. These domains can be reversibly switched into a state of opposite chirality by reversal of the field polarity. This switching is bistable and shows a current response typical for a ferroelectric ground state. The possible mechanism of the field-induced phase transition, of the ferroelectric switching and of the field-induced inversion of the chirality is discussed on the base of XRD, 13C- and 1H-NMR investigations, dielectric and electro-optical measurements.

Abstract
A tilted smectic phase of a new achiral banana-shaped mesogen is presented. It possesses liquidlike order within the layers and appears with a fan-shaped texture. At sufficiently high electric fields, this texture can be transformed into a texture that displays a complete extinction between crossed polarizers and it forms randomly distributed chiral domains. Above a threshold these domains can be reversibly switched into a state of opposite handedness.

Abstract
We present the structural study of a biforked compound exhibiting a Colr-Colh phase transition. This study was performed by means of DSC, optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, dilatometry and molecular modelling. The molecular packing within the two columnar mesophases of this compound is discussed. For the first time, it is shown that the clusters of adjacent molecules which form the elementary section of a column are tilted with respect to the columnar axis in the rectangular mesophase. From the whole set of experimental data, the number of molecules in a columnar section is found to be about 5 in the rectangular mesophase, and 4 in the hexagonal one. The transition between the two columnar mesophases is discussed with respect to its slow kinetics.

Abstract
We report the experimental results on pure fluorinated bent-shaped mesogens showing very unusual textures and electro-optical behavior. In the view of recent publications such behavior can be explained by triclinic symmetry of the mesophase (Sm-C(G)) formed by these compounds. Based on the results of the x-ray diffraction and electro-optical investigations, we give evidence for the Sm-C(G) -->Sm-CP polymorphism.

Abstract
A series of perylene tetracarboxylic acid bisimides 3a-e bearing 3,4,5-tridodecyloxyphenyl substituents on the imide N atoms and zero, two, or four phenoxy-type substituents in the bay positions of the perylene core were synthesized. From investigations of their spectroscopic properties and aggregation behavior in low-polarity solvents by absorption and fluorescence optical spectroscopy, not only were these compounds found to form fluorescent J-type aggregates, but also binding constants for aggregation could be derived which reflect the number and steric demand of the phenoxy substituents for bisimides 3a-d. In the pristine state, 3a-d form thermotropic hexagonal columnar mesophases which exist over a broad temperature range from below -30 degrees C to over 300 degrees C. For the tetraphenoxy-substituted compound 3e, however, a layered crystalline structure was found. This difference in behavior can be explained by the concept of microphase segregation of the aromatic cores of the molecules and the alkyl chains at the periphery. The high stability and bright fluorescence of the mesophase of several of the compounds make them promising for applications as polarizers or components in (opto)electronic devices.

Abstract
Rodlike amphiphilic molecules that contain exclusively aromatic building-blocks and no flexible alkyl chains have been synthesized and their mesomorphic properties investigated. These novel compounds bear diol head groups of different size (2,3-dihydroxypropyloxy or 5,6-dihydroxy-3-oxahexyloxy groups) at one end of a biphenyl unit, various aromatic segments (benzyloxy, 4-, 3-, or 2-methylbenzyloxy, phenoxy groups) at the other, and additional methyl substituents in different positions. They were synthesized by using Suzuki cross-coupling reactions as the key steps. Their thermotropic mesomorphism was investigated by means of polarized light optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and, for enantiotropic phases, by X-ray scattering. The liquid crystallinity of this class of compounds is influenced by protic solvents, such as water and glycerol. Dependent on the temperature and the solvent content, different SA phases were found. Several mesophases resulting from the frustration of these layer structures (e.g., different columnar phases, optical isotropic mesophases, and nematic phases) were also present. The smectic phases have different degrees of intercalation (SAd, SA2). The columnar phases are supposed to be ribbon structures that result from the collapse of the smectic layers. They occur in some pure compounds or they are induced upon the addition of protic solvents. The particular phase sequences of the different compounds depend mainly on the position of the methyl substituents at the biphenyl cores and are largely determined by the degree of intercalation of the aromatic cores.

Abstract
Fluid assemblies of star-shaped molecules like 1 form a range of thermotropic liquid crystalline phases, and represent a borderline case between anisometric mesogens, surfactants, and block copolymers. The low molecular mass molecules (<5.5 kDa) consist of a semipolar central core and a shell of semifluorinated chains.

Abstract
Thermotropic properties and crystal structures of alkyl alpha-D-glucopyranosides and their hydrates were estimated by X-ray, DSC and thermogravimetric measurements (TGA). Monohydrates rapidly lose their crystal water several degrees below the melting point of the anhydrous glucopyranosides. The melting points of the monohydrates measured in DSC pressure cells (chain length longer than seven) are lower, and the clearing points higher than those of the anhydrous glucosides. Layer distances of smectic and crystalline phases of anhydrous compounds were established. Melting points, densities and layer distances of the crystalline anhydrous glucopyranosides display strong even-odd effects. The strong decrease of these effects in the case of the monohydrates can be elucidated by the results of X-ray crystal structure analysis.
