[The effect of a formaldehyde-tyrothricin combination placed in periodontal pockets in association with scaling and root planing]

A solution of formaldehyde and tyrothricin was placed in periodontal pockets of 14 patients. One maxillary quadrant was used as the experimental side, while the contralateral quadrant was employed as the control. A placebo solution was placed in the pockets of the control side. Both the experimental and control sides were treated on days -3, 0, +4, +7, +11 and +14. Scaling and root planing was accomplished on day 0. Plaque and gingival indices, and gingival fluid volume were recorded on all of the treatment days, as well as on day +28. Pocket depths were noted on days -3, 0, +14 and +28. Improvements were noted in all parameters measured on both the experimental and control sides, although statistical analyses revealed that plaque and gingival indices were slightly better in the experimental side. The author concludes that placing a Formaldehyde-Tyrothricin solution in periodontal pockets offers some therapeutic gain over scaling and root planing alone.

[Importance of diabetic equilibrium in periodontal condition. Clinical study]

Three hundred forty diabetic adults were examined. Initially 39 well equilibrated diabetic patients (W.E.D.), with Hb A 1C less than or equal to 6% and 301 poorly equilibrated diabetic patients (P.E.D.) with Hb A 1C greater than 6% were involved. During a second phase, 60 moderately well equilibrated diabetic patients (M.W.E.D.) were counted with Hb A 1C less than or equal to 7% and 280 poorly equilibrated diabetic patients (P.E.D.) with Hb A 1C greater than 7%. The teeth examined were 16, 21, 24, 36, 41 and 44. The indices used were Pl. I. and G.I.; the depths of the pockets were measured. The gingival fluid was sampled from 21 and 24. There was no influence of equilibrium on the Pl. I., G.I., depth of the pockets and the gingival fluid, or any correlation between Hb A1C and the four criteria chosen. The equilibrium of a diabetic patient, whether it be perfect or mediocre, does not seem to influence the periodontal condition.

[Influence of age of the periodontal status of adult diabetics: clinical study]

340 adult diabetics participated to this work in Conception's Hospital of Marseille. The examinated teeth were the 16, 21, 24, 36, 41 and 44. The indexes (Pl.I., G.I.), the depths of the pockets (upon these teeth), the quantity of gingival fluid (upon 21 and 24 only) were registrated. Statistically, the results showed: the gingival inflammation, the quantity of plaque and the severity of the periodontal disease increase with age and that with a maximum between 55 and 65 years.

[Effect of insulin dependence on the periodontium: clinical study]

The aim of this investigation was to study: the effect of insulin on the periodontal condition; the effect of insulin with age. 340 diabetics participated to this work. The examined teeth were the 16, 21, 24, 36, 41, 44. The indexes (Pl.I., G.I.), the depths of the pockets (upon these teeth); the quantity of gingival fluid (upon 21 and 24 only) were registrated. Statistically: the results showed: a better periodontal condition in the I.D.D. group, the I.D.D. are especially young patients less than 40 years, the insulin is active upon young population only, the periodontal destruction increases with age.

[0.1% chlorhexidine mouthwash for gingival inflammation in diabetic adults: double blind study]

The effects of a program of 0.1% chlorhexidine mouthrinse was studied on diabetic adult patients with periodontal disease. The experimental group consisted of 19 diabetic patients on the chlorhexidine regime, while the control group of 21 patients used a placebo mouthrinse. The effects were measured utilizing the plaque index, gingival index and pocket depths. The results showed a significant improvement in gingival inflammation and pockets depths in the experimental (chlorhexidine) group.
