State of nutrition amongst US college students: dataset of a national survey study

OBJECTIVE

This article presents the dataset titled "Nutrition habits amongst college students in the United States. [1]" The dataset contains the survey responses of 200 US college students aged 18-24 years regarding their knowledge, attitudes, and challenges with regard to nutrition. The recommended USDA (US daily allowance) is 200 calories, comprised of 2 cups fruits, 2.5 cups vegetables, 5.5 ounces of protein, 6 ounces of grains, and 3 cups of dairy [2]. Adhering to these nutritional guidelines however can be complicated by rising tuition prices, food insecurity, and inability to make one's own food.

DATA DESCRIPTION

The data in the dataset attempt to estimate the incidence of these barriers. These data could be useful to understand the barriers to healthy eating amongst young adults, and design targeted solutions.

Sclerosing Mesenteritis Managed Conservatively With Prednisone

The authors present the case of a middle-aged lady with two weeks of abdominal pain. Computed tomography imaging revealed sclerosing mesenteritis. Sclerosing mesenteritis is also known as mesenteric panniculitis and is a chronic fibrosing inflammatory disease that primarily affects the adipose tissue of the mesentery in the small intestine and colon. The clinical presentation, imaging findings, differential diagnosis, and therapeutic management are presented in this report. In our patient's case, she was able to be managed conservatively, without the need for surgery. This reflects the most benign and self-limiting natural history of the disease.

Estimating the cost of TB and its social impact on TB patients and their households

Illness often poses a significant financial burden on individuals and their households, and tuberculosis (TB) is no exception. Although TB treatment is free in Nigeria, patients are likely to incur costs due to multiple visits during treatment. The purpose of this study was 1) to examine the health-seeking behaviour of TB patients and the costs borne by TB patients in Nigeria, and 2) to assess the social impact of TB disease on TB patients and their families/households. Of 260 TB patients surveyed, the majority (74.7%) were aged between 20 and 49 years. TB patients expended an average of US$52.02 (N = 8323.58, at the rate of US$1 = N = 160) per person on all visits associated with diagnosis and receipt of diagnostic test results. Overall, households experienced a shortfall of about US$57.30 (N = 9174.72) or 24.9% of income loss due to TB illness. Further analysis revealed that 9.7% of TB patients relied on children of school age or below to finance the costs of TB illness.

Evaluation of different culture methods for the diagnosis of peritonitis in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis

A total of 170 continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) fluids were processed by various culture methods, including direct inoculation of the centrifuged sediment, inoculation into automated blood culture bottles, water lysis, Tween-80 incorporated blood agar, and Triton-X treatment of the specimen. Of 170 CAPD fluids, 127 showed the growth of bacteria/fungi. Sixty-three fluids showed growth by all methods, the water lysis alone detected 24 additional positive cultures, while Tween-80 blood agar and Triton-X yielded 30 additional positive cultures. A combination of water lysis, Tween-80 blood agar and Triton-X treatment of the CAPD fluid is recommended for diagnosis of CAPD peritonitis in resource-limited settings.

Sustained-release effervescent floating matrix tablets of baclofen: development, optimization and in vitro-in vivo evaluation in healthy human volunteers

BACKGROUND AND THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

Baclofen, a centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxant, is indicated in the long-term treatment of spasticity. It is difficult to formulate baclofen sustained release dosage forms because its absorption on arrival to colon (or even before) is low or nonexistent. In the present investigation efforts were made to improve the bioavailability of baclofen by increasing the residence time of the drug through sustained-release matrix tablet formulation via gastroretentive mechanism.

METHODS

Tablets were prepared by wet granulation technique. The influence of gas generating and gel forming agents, amount of baclofen and total weight of tablet on physical properties, in vitro buoyancy, floating lag time, drug release, DSC, X-ray studies were investigated. The release mechanisms were explored and explained by applying zero order, first order, Higuchi and Korsmeyer equations. The selected formulations were subjected to stability study for the period of three months.

RESULTS

For all formulations, kinetics of drug release from tablet followed Higuchi's square root of time kinetic treatment heralding diffusion as predominant mechanism of drug release. Formulations containing 20 mg and 40 mg (F-1 and F-7) showed similar release profiles. There was no significant change in the selected formulations, when subjected to accelerated stability conditions over a period of three months. X-ray imaging in six healthy human volunteers revealed a mean gastric retention period of 5.50±0.7 hrs for the selected formulation.

CONCLUSION

Stable, sustained release effervescent floating matrix tablets of baclofen could be prepared by wet granulation technique.
