Abstract
Despite the routine use of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS)-modified live vaccines, serious concerns are currently being raised due to their quick reversion to virulence and limited cross-protection against divergent PRRS virus (PRRSV) strains circulating in the field. Therefore, a PRRS chimeric vaccine (JB1) was produced using a DNA-launched infectious clone by replacing open reading frames (ORFs) 3–6 with those from a mixture of two genetically different PRRSV2 strains (K07–2273 and K08–1054) and ORF1a with that from a mutation-resistant PRRSV strain (RVRp22) exhibiting an attenuated phenotype. To evaluate the safety and cross-protective efficacy of JB1 in a reproductive model, eight PRRS-negative pregnant sows were purchased and divided into four groups. Four sows in two of the groups were vaccinated with JB1, and the other 4 sows were untreated at gestational day 60. At gestational day 93, one vaccinated group and one nonvaccinated group each were challenged with either K07–2273 or K08–1054. All of the sows aborted or delivered until gestation day 115 (24 days post challenge), and the newborn piglets were observed up to the 28th day after birth, which was the end of the experiment. Overall, pregnant sows of the JB1-vaccinated groups showed no meaningful viremia after vaccination and significant reductions in viremia with K07–2273 and K08–1054, exhibiting significantly higher levels of serum virus-neutralizing antibodies than non-vaccinated sows. Moreover, the JB1-vaccinated groups did not exhibit any abortion due to vaccination and showed improved piglet viability and birth weight. The piglets from JB1-vaccinated sows displayed lower viral concentrations in serum and fewer lung lesions compared with those of the piglets from the nonvaccinated sows. Therefore, JB1 is a safe and effective vaccine candidate that confers simultaneous protection against two genetically different PRRSV strains.

Abstract
We present high-statistics, precision measurements of the detailed time and energy dependence of the primary cosmic-ray electron flux and positron flux over 79 Bartels rotations from May 2011 to May 2017 in the energy range from 1 to 50 GeV. For the first time, the charge-sign dependent modulation during solar maximum has been investigated in detail by leptons alone. Based on 23.5×10^{6} events, we report the observation of short-term structures on the timescale of months coincident in both the electron flux and the positron flux. These structures are not visible in the e^{+}/e^{-} flux ratio. The precision measurements across the solar polarity reversal show that the ratio exhibits a smooth transition over 830±30 days from one value to another. The midpoint of the transition shows an energy dependent delay relative to the reversal and changes by 260±30 days from 1 to 6 GeV.

Abstract
We present the precision measurement from May 2011 to May 2017 (79 Bartels rotations) of the proton fluxes at rigidities from 1 to 60 GV and the helium fluxes from 1.9 to 60 GV based on a total of 1×10^{9} events collected with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer aboard the International Space Station. This measurement is in solar cycle 24, which has the solar maximum in April 2014. We observed that, below 40 GV, the proton flux and the helium flux show nearly identical fine structures in both time and relative amplitude. The amplitudes of the flux structures decrease with increasing rigidity and vanish above 40 GV. The amplitudes of the structures are reduced during the time period, which started one year after solar maximum, when the proton and helium fluxes steadily increase. Above ∼3 GV the p/He flux ratio is time independent. We observed that below ∼3 GV the ratio has a long-term decrease coinciding with the period during which the fluxes start to rise.

Abstract
We report on the observation of new properties of secondary cosmic rays Li, Be, and B measured in the rigidity (momentum per unit charge) range 1.9 GV to 3.3 TV with a total of 5.4×10^{6} nuclei collected by AMS during the first five years of operation aboard the International Space Station. The Li and B fluxes have an identical rigidity dependence above 7 GV and all three fluxes have an identical rigidity dependence above 30 GV with the Li/Be flux ratio of 2.0±0.1. The three fluxes deviate from a single power law above 200 GV in an identical way. This behavior of secondary cosmic rays has also been observed in the AMS measurement of primary cosmic rays He, C, and O but the rigidity dependences of primary cosmic rays and of secondary cosmic rays are distinctly different. In particular, above 200 GV, the secondary cosmic rays harden more than the primary cosmic rays.

Abstract
Modified live vaccines (MLVs) based on genotype 1 strains, particularly C-strain, have been used to prevent and control classical swine fever virus (CSFV) worldwide. Nevertheless, a shift in the predominant CSFV strains circulating in the field from genotype 1 or 3 to genotype 2 is seen. Genotype 2 is genetically distant from the vaccine strains and was recently reported during outbreaks after vaccine failure; this has raised concerns that vaccination has influenced viral evolution. In Korea in 2016, there was an unexpected CSF outbreak in a MLV-vaccinated commercial pig herd. The causative CSFV strain was genetically distinct from previously isolated Korean strains but similar to recent Chinese strains exhibiting enhanced capacity to escape neutralization; this suggests the need for global cooperative research on the evolution of CSFV. We analysed global E2 sequences, using bioinformatics tools, revealing the evolutionary pathways of CSFV. Classical swine fever virus genotypes 1 and 2 experienced different degrees and patterns of evolutionary growth. Whereas genotype 1 stayed relatively conserved over time, the genetic diversity of genotype 2 has progressively expanded, with few fluctuations. It was determined that genotype 2 evolved under lower immune pressures and at a higher evolutionary rate than genotype 1. Further, several selected codons, under diversifying selection in genotype 1 but under purifying selection in genotype 2, correspond to antigenic determinants, which could lead to evasion of vaccine-induced immunity. Our findings provide evidence that evolutionary changes in CSFV are the result of the disproportionate usage of the CSF MLVs in endemic areas; this underscores the need to develop mitigation strategies to minimize the substantial risk associated with the emergence of vaccine-escaping mutants.

We report the observation of new properties of primary cosmic rays He, C, and O measured in the rigidity (momentum/charge) range 2 GV to 3 TV with 90×10^{6} helium, 8.4×10^{6} carbon, and 7.0×10^{6} oxygen nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during the first five years of operation. Above 60 GV, these three spectra have identical rigidity dependence. They all deviate from a single power law above 200 GV and harden in an identical way.

Abstract
Knowledge of the rigidity dependence of the boron to carbon flux ratio (B/C) is important in understanding the propagation of cosmic rays. The precise measurement of the B/C ratio from 1.9 GV to 2.6 TV, based on 2.3 million boron and 8.3 million carbon nuclei collected by AMS during the first 5 years of operation, is presented. The detailed variation with rigidity of the B/C spectral index is reported for the first time. The B/C ratio does not show any significant structures in contrast to many cosmic ray models that require such structures at high rigidities. Remarkably, above 65 GV, the B/C ratio is well described by a single power law R^{Δ} with index Δ=-0.333±0.014(fit)±0.005(syst), in good agreement with the Kolmogorov theory of turbulence which predicts Δ=-1/3 asymptotically.

Abstract
A precision measurement by AMS of the antiproton flux and the antiproton-to-proton flux ratio in primary cosmic rays in the absolute rigidity range from 1 to 450 GV is presented based on 3.49×10^{5} antiproton events and 2.42×10^{9} proton events. The fluxes and flux ratios of charged elementary particles in cosmic rays are also presented. In the absolute rigidity range ∼60 to ∼500 GV, the antiproton p[over ¯], proton p, and positron e^{+} fluxes are found to have nearly identical rigidity dependence and the electron e^{-} flux exhibits a different rigidity dependence. Below 60 GV, the (p[over ¯]/p), (p[over ¯]/e^{+}), and (p/e^{+}) flux ratios each reaches a maximum. From ∼60 to ∼500 GV, the (p[over ¯]/p), (p[over ¯]/e^{+}), and (p/e^{+}) flux ratios show no rigidity dependence. These are new observations of the properties of elementary particles in the cosmos.

Abstract
Anesthetic doses of ketamine induce apoptosis, as well as gene expression of activity-dependent neuroprotective protein (ADNP), a putative homeodomain transcription factor in rat pups (P7). This study investigated if ketamine induced ADNP protein in a dose-dependent manner in vitro and in vivo using primary cultures of cortical neurons and neonatal pups (P7). In vivo immunohistochemistry demonstrated a sub-anesthetic dose of ketamine increased ADNP in the somatosensory cortex (SCC) which was previously identified to be damaged by repeated exposure to anesthetic doses of ketamine. Administration of low-dose ketamine prior to full sedation prevented caspase-3 activation in the hippocampus and SCC. Primary cultures of cortical neurons treated with ketamine (10 μM-10mM) at 3 days-in vitro (3 DIV) displayed a concentration-dependent decrease in expanded growth cones. Furthermore, neuronal production and localization of ADNP varied as a function of both ketamine concentration and length of exposure. Taken together, these data support the model that ADNP induction may be partially responsible for the efficacy of a low-dose ketamine pre-treatment in preventing ketamine-induced neuronal cell death.

Abstract
The present study aimed at investigating the effects of essential oil of Trachyspermum ammi fruits, an oil-bearing plant of Apiaceae family, on human sperm viability and membrane integrity. Chemical compositions of the oil were analysed by GC-MS. Thirty compounds representing 91.39% of the total oil were identified. The viability and membrane integrity of human spermatozoa were assessed using minimum effective dose (MED) concentration (125 μg ml(-1)) of the oil. Sperm treated with essential oil showed a significant decrease (P < 0.05) in viability assessed by eosin-nigrosin and fluorescence dual staining. Moreover, the treated sperm also showed a significant loss (P < 0.05) of functional mitochondria and antioxidant enzyme, catalase (EC 1.11.1.6, CAT), when compared to control. The cholesterol:phospholipid ratio was also increased (P < 0.05) in treated sperm when compared to control, which is an indicator of loss of binding ability of human spermatozoa to the zona pellucida. The scanning electron microscopic studies demonstrated the loss of membrane integrity in essential oil-treated human spermatozoa, which showed vacuolation, swelling of acrosomal cap, detachment of head portion and tail coiling. Present observations indicate the spermicidal property of essential oil of T. ammi fruits, which could be helpful to develop medicinal preparations as a male contraceptive.

Abstract
Epidemiological characteristics of swine pulmonary Pneumocystis (P.) carinii and concurrent infections were surveyed on Jeju Island, Korea, within a designated period in 172 pigs submitted from 54 farms to the Department of Veterinary Medicine, Jeju National University. The submitted cases were evaluated by histopathology, immunohistochemistry, PCR/RT-PCR, and bacteriology. P. carinii infection was confirmed in 39 (22.7%) of the 172 pigs. Histopathologically, the lungs had moderate to severe lymphohistioctyic interstitial pneumonia with variable numbers of fungal organisms within lesions. Furthermore, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2) co-infection was a common phenomenon (12.8%, 20.5%, and 48.7% were positive for PRRS, PCV-2, or both, respectively, as determined by PCR/RT-PCR). Infection was much more concentrated during winter (December to March) and 53.8% of the infected pigs were 7- to 8-weeks old. In addition, three pigs showed co-infection with bacteria such as Pasteurella multocida and Streptococcus suis. The results of the present study suggest that the secondary P. carinii infection is common following primary viral infection in swine in Korea. They further suggest that co-infection of P. carinii might be enhanced by the virulence of primary pathogens or might have synergistic effects in the pigs with chronic wasting diseases.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the chemical composition of the essential oil isolated from the floral parts of Magnolia liliflora Desr. by hydrodistillation, and to test the efficacy of essential oil and various leaf extracts against a diverse range of microorganisms comprising food spoilage and foodborne pathogenic bacteria. The chemical composition of essential oil was analyzed by GC-MS. It was determined that 52 compounds, which represented 78.07% of total oil, were present in the oil. The oil contained mainly levoxine (15.59%), methylcyclopropane (24.26%), 2-beta-pinene (5.3%), caryophyllene oxide (4.01%), and beta-caryophyllene (1.7%). The oil (1000 ppm/disc) and leaf extracts (1500 ppm/disc) exhibited promising antibacterial effects against the tested pathogens as a diameter of zones of inhibition (9 to 18 and 7 to 12 mm) and MIC values (125 to 1000 and 500 to 3000 microg/mL), respectively. Also, the oil had a potent detrimental effect on the viable count of the tested bacteria. The results obtained in this study support the role of essential oil and the leaf extracts derived from M. liliflora as a remarkable approach to inhibit the growth of food spoilage and foodborne pathogens.

Abstract
Aspergillus sp PS 104, a soil isolate had excellent potential to solubilize rock phosphate in vitro. The process was influenced by the presence of various concentrations of local loess (red soil). The simultaneous occurrence, in our experiment, of high levels of solubilized phosphate and synthesized citric acid, together with the lowest reached pH values, confirmed the role of citric acid in the phosphate solubilization mechanism. When the soil was present, phosphate release was better correlated than citrate synthesis with H+ concentration. Changes in soluble phosphate concentration did not follow a sigmoid pattern. The ability of organism to release phosphatase was also studied. An interesting relationship was observed between the two processes of phosphate mobilization: citric acid synthesis and phosphatase production.

Abstract
Rhizobia promote the growth of plants either directly through N2 fixation, supply of nutrients, synthesis of phytohormones and solubilization of minerals, or indirectly as a biocontrol agent by inhibiting the growth of pathogens. The biocontrol effect of rhizobia is due to the secretion of secondary metabolites such as antibiotics and HCN. Siderophore production in iron stress conditions provides rhizobia an added advantage, resulting in exclusion of pathogens due to iron starvation.

Abstract
One of the most significant features of diagnostic echocardiographic images is to reduce speckle noise and make better image quality. In this paper we proposed a simple and effective filter design for image denoising and contrast enhancement based on multiscale wavelet denoising method. Wavelet threshold algorithms replace wavelet coefficients with small magnitude by zero and keep or shrink the other coefficients. This is basically a local procedure, since wavelet coefficients characterize the local regularity of a function. After we estimate distribution of noise within echocardiographic image, then apply to fitness Wavelet threshold algorithm. A common way of the estimating the speckle noise level in coherent imaging is to calculate the mean-to-standard-deviation ratio of the pixel intensity, often termed the Equivalent Number of Looks(ENL), over a uniform image area. Unfortunately, we found this measure not very robust mainly because of the difficulty to identify a uniform area in a real image. For this reason, we will only use here the S/MSE ratio and which corresponds to the standard SNR in case of additivie noise. We have simulated some echocardiographic images by specialized hardware for real-time application;processing of a 512*512 images takes about 1 min. Our experiments show that the optimal threshold level depends on the spectral content of the image. High spectral content tends to over-estimate the noise standard deviation estimation performed at the finest level of the DWT. As a result, a lower threshold parameter is required to get the optimal S/MSE. The standard WCS theory predicts a threshold that depends on the number of signal samples only.

Abstract
In the conformal near-field acoustic holography (NAH) using the boundary element method (BEM), the transfer matrix relating the vibro-acoustic properties of source and field depends solely on the geometrical condition of the problem. This kind of NAH is known to be very powerful in dealing with the sources having irregular shaped boundaries. When the vibro-acoustic source field is reconstructed by using this conformal NAH, one tends to position the sensors as close as possible to the source surface in order to get rich information on the nonpropagating wave components. The conventional acoustic BEM based on the Kirchhoff-Helmholtz integral equation has the singularity problem in the close near field of the source surface. This problem stems from the singular kernel of the Green function of the boundary integral equation (BIE) and the singularity can influence the reconstruction accuracy greatly. In this paper, the nonsingular BIE is introduced to the NAH calculation and the holographic BIE is reformulated. The effectiveness of nonsingular BEM has been investigated for the reduction of reconstruction error. Through interior and exterior examples, it is shown that the resolution of predicted field pressure could be improved in the close near field by employing the nonsingular BIE. Because the BEM-based NAH inevitably requires the field pressure measured in the close proximity to the source surface, the present approach is recommended for improving the resolution of the reconstructed source field.

Abstract
In applying the conformal near-field acoustical holography (NAH) to actual source identification problems, it is often possible to determine the velocity at certain points of the source surface in advance. This partially known velocity data would reduce the problem size and permit better reconstruction accuracy. In this paper, the effectiveness of using partially measured source data in the conformal NAH is investigated, which uses the boundary element method. A vibro-acoustic transfer matrix and measured field pressure data, which is involved with the boundary integral equation, are reorganized in order to deal with the partially measured surface velocities. For a baffled vibrating panel, simulations were performed by varying the number of velocity-known nodes. In addition, the effect of measurement error is investigated for two extreme positioning methods of velocity-known nodes. Without regularization, the reconstructed error can be reduced considerably by employing some of the source data and this error can be further reduced by increasing those surface points. However, the velocity reconstruction error is not reduced substantially when the number of velocity-known nodes is less than 30%-40% of the total nodes. The reduction in the reconstruction error is not large if the regularization technique is applied to the restored field.

Abstract
A novel chitinase was detected in extracellular culture fluids of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae (ATCC 20500) grown in liquid medium containing chitin as a sole carbon source. A chitinase was purified to near homogeneity from culture broth of M. anisopliae by DEAE-Sephacel, CM-Sepharose CL-6B ion-exchange chromatography, and gel filtration with Superose 12HR. The molecular mass of the enzyme determined by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was approximately 60 kDa and the optimum pH of the enzyme was 5.0. This molecular mass is different from values of 33, 43.5, and 45 kDa for endochitinases and 110 kDa for an exochitinase (N-acetylglucosaminidase) from M. anisopliae ME-1 published previously. In addition, N-terminal sequences of 60-kDa chitinase are different from those of 43.4- and 45-kDa endochitinases. The purified enzyme showed high chitinolytic activity against colloidal, crystalline chitin of crab shells as well as against p-nitrophenyl-beta-d-N-acetylglucosamide, p-nitrophenyl-beta-d-N, N'-diacetylchitobiose, and p-nitrophenyl-N, N'-N"-triacetylchitotriose, indicating that this enzyme has both endo- and exochitinase activity.

Abstract
A novel chitinase gene was isolated from Metarhizium anisopliae grown in a medium containing chitin as the sole carbon source. Comparisons of nucleotide sequence of the isolated gene with those of other fungal chitinase genes showed low sequence identity (24.4-36.4%) except for the active site of chitinase. In addition, molecular mass determination of the fused gene product separated on a gel showed that the fused chitinase seems to be about 70 kDa, while the molecular mass calculated from the deduced amino acid sequence can be about 58 kDa. These molecular masses were different from values of 33 kDa for an endochitinase and 110 kDa for an exochitinase (N-acetylglucosaminidase) from M. anisopliae published previously.

Abstract
A 30-year-old HIV-positive man presented with acute hydrocephalus secondary to tuberculous meningitis, for which an external ventricular drain was inserted. He developed marked natriuresis in the postoperative period, which resulted in acute hyponatraemia (131 to 122 mmol/l) and a contraction of his intravascular volume. A diagnosis of cerebral salt wasting syndrome was made, and he responded to sodium and fluid loading. This case highlights the differentiation of cerebral salt wasting syndrome from the more commonly occurring syndrome of inappropriate anti-diuretic hormone secretion as the aetiology of the hyponatraemia.

Abstract
We have isolated and sequenced cDNA clones encoding for preprogastrin from a canine antral cDNA library. Comparison of this sequence with those of porcine, human, and rat gastrin reveals extensive (83%) homology in the gastrin coding region as well as short regions of conserved nucleotides in the noncoding regions. The canine sequence encodes a preprogastrin of 104 amino acids which consists of a signal peptide, a 37-amino acid prosegment, and a 34-amino acid gastrin sequence, followed by a glycine (the amide donor), and flanked by pairs of arginine residues.

Abstract
The DNA methylated by Hha I methylase was resistant against cleavage of Hae II or Aha II endonuclease indicating that the methyl group of the C5 position of the inmost cytosine nucleotide interferes with the interaction between the enzyme and the hexameric recognition sequence. Considering that Hae II or Aha II methylase has not been isolated yet, the result explained above is a useful information for protecting a double stranded DNA from being cleaved by Hae II or Aha II endonuclease. In contrast to Hae II or Aha II endonuclease, Ban I endonuclease which also has Hha I sequence as its tetrameric core was able to cleave the same DNA normally. This result suggests that the C5 position of the inmost pyrimidine nucleotide is not an important contact point between Ban I endonuclease and its hexameric recognition sequence.
