Approaching the 1000 K energy barrier in high coordinate lanthanide single-ion magnets: Increasing Ueff in the [Dy(Tp2-py)F]+ moiety with tetrahydrofuran

Using the existing architecture of [Dy(Tp2-py)F]+ that supports a terminal Dy-F bond, the synthesis and isolation of [Dy(Tp2-py)F(THF)2](PF6) and its diamagnetic yttrium analogue have been achieved. Alternating current magnetic susceptibility studies show an increased effective energy barrier of Ueff = 661(6) cm-1 (951(8) K), the highest yet reported for a high coordinate (n > 8) lanthanide single-ion magnet.

Borotropic shifting of the hydrotris[3-(2-furyl)pyrazol-1-yl]borate ligand in high-coordinate lanthanide complexes

The coordination of hydrotris[3-(2-furyl)pyrazol-1-yl]borate (Tp2-Fu, C21H16BN6O3) to lanthanide(III) ions is achieved for the first time with the complex [Ln(Tp2-Fu)2](BPh4)·xCH2Cl2 (1-Ln has Ln = Ce and x = 2; 1-Dy has Ln = Dy and x = 1). This was accomplished via both hydrous (Ln = Ce) and anhydrous methods (Ln = Dy). When isolating the dysprosium analogue, the filtrate produced a second crop of crystals which were revealed to be the 1,2-borotropic-shifted product [Dy(κ4-Tp2-Fu)(κ5-Tp2-Fu*)](BPh4) (2) {Tp2-Fu* = hydrobis[3-(2-furyl)pyrazol-1-yl][5-(2-furyl)pyrazol-1-yl]borate}. We conclude that the presence of a strong Lewis acid and a sterically crowded coordination environment are contributing factors for the 1,2-borotropic shifting of scorpionate ligands in conjunction with the size of the conical angle with the scorpionate ligand.

In situ tracking and characterisation of scorpionate ligands via11B-NMR spectroscopy

Herein, we exemplify the use of ¹¹B-NMR spectroscopy as a new means of tracking the synthesis of scorpionate ligands in situ and ascertaining their purity upon isolation. We have demonstrated the use of the characterisation technique on five well known scorpionate ligands as their potassium salts.

Using ¹¹B-NMR spectroscopy for the in situ tracking and characterisation of the well known scorpionate ligand class. Five examples are included.

Benzotriazolate cage complexes of tin(II) and lithium: halide-influenced serendipitous assembly

The one-pot reactions of the tin(II) halides SnX(2) (X = F, Cl, Br, I) with lithium hexamethyldisilazide, [Li(hmds)], and benzotriazole, (bta)H, produce contrasting outcomes. Tin(II) fluoride does not react with [Li(hmds)] and (bta)H, the outcome being the formation of insoluble [Li(bta)](∞). Tin(II) chloride and tin(II) bromide react with [Li(hmds)] and (bta)H in toluene to produce the hexadecametallic tin(II)-lithium cages [(hmds)(8)Sn(8)(bta)(12)Li(8)X(4)]·(n toluene) [X = Cl, 3·(8 toluene); X = Br, 4·(3 toluene)]. The reaction of tin(II) iodide with [Li(hmds)] and (bta)H in thf solvent produces the ion-separated species [{(thf)(2)Li(bta)}(3){Li(thf)}](2)[SnI(4)]·(thf), [5](2)[SnI(4)]·(thf), the structure of which contains a cyclic trimeric unit of lithium benzotriazolate and a rare example of the tetraiodostannate(II) dianion.
