Increased accumulation of the advanced glycation endproduct Ne(carboxymethyl) lysine in the intramyocardial vasculature in patients with epicarditis

Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) are implicated in the pathogenesis of vascular disease. In previous studies we have found increased deposition of N(e)-(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML) in intramyocardial vasculature in the heart in acute myocardial infarction and myocarditis. It is known that the process of inflammation plays a role in the formation of AGEs. In this study we have explored the presence of CML (a major AGE) in the heart of patients with epicarditis using a monoclonal anti-CML antibody. Nine patients with epicarditis (n = 9) died and their hearts were used for this study, control were hearts from patients who died from conditions unrelated to heart disease and without signs of myocarditis or epicarditis CML deposition and complement were significantly increased in patients with epicarditis compared to control hearts. Thus epicarditis increases CML depositions in the intramyocardial vasculature.

Study of High-Transverse-Momentum Higgs Boson Production in Association with a Vector Boson in the qqbb Final State with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter presents the first study of Higgs boson production in association with a vector boson (V=W or Z) in the fully hadronic qqbb final state using data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137  fb^{-1}. The vector bosons and Higgs bosons are each reconstructed as large-radius jets and tagged using jet substructure techniques. Dedicated tagging algorithms exploiting b-tagging properties are used to identify jets consistent with Higgs bosons decaying into bb[over ¯]. Dominant backgrounds from multijet production are determined directly from the data, and a likelihood fit to the jet mass distribution of Higgs boson candidates is used to extract the number of signal events. The VH production cross section is measured inclusively and differentially in several ranges of Higgs boson transverse momentum: 250-450, 450-650, and greater than 650 GeV. The inclusive signal yield relative to the standard model expectation is observed to be μ=1.4_{-0.9}^{+1.0} and the corresponding cross section is 3.1±1.3(stat)_{-1.4}^{+1.8}(syst)  pb.

Measurement of the Centrality Dependence of the Dijet Yield in p+Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=8.16 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

ATLAS measured the centrality dependence of the dijet yield using 165  nb^{-1} of p+Pb data collected at sqrt[s_{NN}]=8.16  TeV in 2016. The event centrality, which reflects the p+Pb impact parameter, is characterized by the total transverse energy registered in the Pb-going side of the forward calorimeter. The central-to-peripheral ratio of the scaled dijet yields, R_{CP}, is evaluated, and the results are presented as a function of variables that reflect the kinematics of the initial hard parton scattering process. The R_{CP} shows a scaling with the Bjorken x of the parton originating from the proton, x_{p}, while no such trend is observed as a function of x_{Pb}. This analysis provides unique input to understanding the role of small proton spatial configurations in p+Pb collisions by covering parton momentum fractions from the valence region down to x_{p}∼10^{-3} and x_{Pb}∼4×10^{-4}.

Search for New Phenomena in Two-Body Invariant Mass Distributions Using Unsupervised Machine Learning for Anomaly Detection at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

Searches for new resonances are performed using an unsupervised anomaly-detection technique. Events with at least one electron or muon are selected from 140  fb^{-1} of pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV recorded by ATLAS at the Large Hadron Collider. The approach involves training an autoencoder on data, and subsequently defining anomalous regions based on the reconstruction loss of the decoder. Studies focus on nine invariant mass spectra that contain pairs of objects consisting of one light jet or b jet and either one lepton (e,μ), photon, or second light jet or b jet in the anomalous regions. No significant deviations from the background hypotheses are observed. Limits on contributions from generic Gaussian signals with various widths of the resonance mass are obtained for nine invariant masses in the anomalous regions.

Posterior realignment of basilar invagination with facet joint distraction technique

PURPOSE

We describe our experience with management of basilar invagination (BI) with the atlantoaxial dislocation (C1/C2) joint reduction technique, including posterior atlantoaxial internal fixation.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

From 2008 to 2018, eleven patients with atlantoaxial dislocation (AAD) and BI underwent surgical reduction using C1/C2 the joint reduction technique with a fibular graft/peek cage placement followed by C1 lateral mass/C2 pedicle screw fixation. In two cases that we originally planned to perform C1/C2 joint reduction, occiput-C2 pedicle screw fixation was performed instead due to intraoperative challenges. Post-operative course and surgical complications will be discussed.

RESULTS

A total of 13 patients, with an average age of 30.46 ± 13.23 years (range 12-57), were operated. In one patient, iatrogenic vertebral artery injury occurred without any neurological complication. JOA score improved from 10.45 ± 1.128 to 15.0 ± 1.949 (p < 0.0001, paired t-test). All radiological indices were improved (p at least < 0.001). No construct failure was seen in any of the patients with C1-2 facet joint distraction technique during follow-up, and no additional anterior decompression surgery was required.

CONCLUSIONS

C1/C2 joint reduction technique with fibular graft/cervical PEEK cage of BI patients together with AAD seems to be an effective and safe surgical method of treatment.

Observation of WZγ Production in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of WZγ production and a measurement of its cross section using 140.1±1.2  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The WZγ production cross section, with both the W and Z bosons decaying leptonically, pp→WZγ→ℓ^{'}^{±}νℓ^{+}ℓ^{-}γ (ℓ^{(^{'})}=e, μ), is measured in a fiducial phase-space region defined such that the leptons and the photon have high transverse momentum and the photon is isolated. The cross section is found to be 2.01±0.30(stat)±0.16(syst)  fb. The corresponding standard model predicted cross section calculated at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and at leading order in the electroweak coupling constant is 1.50±0.06  fb. The observed significance of the WZγ signal is 6.3σ, compared with an expected significance of 5.0σ.

Genetic, haplotype and phylogenetic analysis of Ligula intestinalis by using mt-CO1 gene marker: ecological implications, climate change and eco-genetic diversity

Abstract Ligula intestinalis is a cestode parasite that affects freshwater fish in different countries of the world. The current study aims to reveal the phylogenetic, genetic and haplotype diversity of mt-CO1 gene sequences sent to the NCBI database from different countries by using in-silico analysis. The 105 mt-CO1 (371 bp) gene sequences of L. intestinalis obtained from NCBI were used for bioinformatics analyses. Sequences were subjected to phylogenetic and haplotype analysis. As a result of the haplotype analysis of L. intestinalis, 38 haplotypes were obtained from 13 different countries. Hap24 constituted 44.76% of the obtained haplotype network. Changes in nucleotides between haplotypes occurred at 1-84 different points. China and Turkey have highest fixation index (Fst) values of 0.59761, while the lowest (-0.10526) was found between Russia and Turkey. This study provides a baseline for future studies on extensive scale on the epidemiology, ecological aspects, distribution pattern, transmission dynamics and population dispersion of L. intestinalis worldwide.

Combined Measurement of the Higgs Boson Mass from the H→γγ and H→ZZ^{*}→4ℓ Decay Channels with the ATLAS Detector Using sqrt[s]=7, 8, and 13 TeV pp Collision Data

A measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson combining the H→ZZ^{*}→4ℓ and H→γγ decay channels is presented. The result is based on 140  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector during LHC run 2 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV combined with the run 1 ATLAS mass measurement, performed at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, yielding a Higgs boson mass of 125.11±0.09(stat)±0.06(syst)=125.11±0.11  GeV. This corresponds to a 0.09% precision achieved on this fundamental parameter of the Standard Model of particle physics.

Search for Dark Photons in Rare Z Boson Decays with the ATLAS Detector

A search for events with a dark photon produced in association with a dark Higgs boson via rare decays of the standard model Z boson is presented, using 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The dark boson decays into a pair of dark photons, and at least two of the three dark photons must each decay into a pair of electrons or muons, resulting in at least two same-flavor opposite-charge lepton pairs in the final state. The data are found to be consistent with the background prediction, and upper limits are set on the dark photon's coupling to the dark Higgs boson times the kinetic mixing between the standard model photon and the dark photon, α_{D}ϵ^{2}, in the dark photon mass range of [5, 40] GeV except for the ϒ mass window [8.8, 11.1] GeV. This search explores new parameter space not previously excluded by other experiments.

Observation of Single-Top-Quark Production in Association with a Photon Using the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of single top quarks produced together with a photon, which directly probes the electroweak coupling of the top quark. The analysis uses 139  fb^{-1} of 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Requiring a photon with transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV and within the detector acceptance, the fiducial cross section is measured to be 688±23(stat) _{-71}^{+75}(syst)  fb, to be compared with the standard model prediction of 515_{-42}^{+36}  fb at next-to-leading order in QCD.

Measurement of Suppression of Large-Radius Jets and Its Dependence on Substructure in Pb+Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This letter presents a measurement of the nuclear modification factor of large-radius jets in sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV Pb+Pb collisions by the ATLAS experiment. The measurement is performed using 1.72  nb^{-1} and 257  pb^{-1} of Pb+Pb and pp data, respectively. Measurement of the Sensitivity of Two-Particle Correlations in pp Collisions to the Presence of Hard Scatterings

A key open question in the study of multiparticle production in high-energy pp collisions is the relationship between the "ridge"-i.e., the observed azimuthal correlations between particles in the underlying event that extend over all rapidities-and hard or semihard scattering processes. In particular, it is not known whether jets or their soft fragments are correlated with particles in the underlying event. To address this question, two-particle correlations are measured in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV using data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, with an integrated luminosity of 15.8  pb^{-1}, in two different configurations. In the first case, charged particles associated with jets are excluded from the correlation analysis, while in the second case, correlations are measured between particles within jets and charged particles from the underlying event. Second-order flow coefficients, v_{2}, are presented as a function of event multiplicity and transverse momentum. These measurements show that excluding particles associated with jets does not affect the measured correlations. Moreover, particles associated with jets do not exhibit any significant azimuthal correlations with the underlying event, ruling out hard processes contributing to the ridge.

Observation of an Excess of Dicharmonium Events in the Four-Muon Final State with the ATLAS Detector

A search is made for potential ccc[over ¯]c[over ¯] tetraquarks decaying into a pair of charmonium states in the four muon final state using proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140  fb^{-1} recorded by the ATLAS experiment at LHC. Two decay channels, J/ψ+J/ψ→4μ and J/ψ+ψ(2S)→4μ, are studied. Backgrounds are estimated based on a hybrid approach involving Monte Carlo simulations and data-driven methods. Statistically significant excesses with respect to backgrounds dominated by the single parton scattering are seen in the di-J/ψ channel consistent with a narrow resonance at 6.9 GeV and a broader structure at lower mass. A statistically significant excess is also seen in the J/ψ+ψ(2S) channel. The fitted masses and decay widths of the structures are reported.

Observation of the γγ→ττ Process in Pb+Pb Collisions and Constraints on the τ-Lepton Anomalous Magnetic Moment with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of τ-lepton-pair production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions Pb+Pb→Pb(γγ→ττ)Pb and constraints on the τ-lepton anomalous magnetic moment a_{τ}. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.44  nb^{-1} of LHC Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2018. Selected events contain one muon from a τ-lepton decay, an electron or charged-particle track(s) from the other τ-lepton decay, little additional central-detector activity, and no forward neutrons. The γγ→ττ process is observed in Pb+Pb collisions with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations and a signal strength of μ_{ττ}=1.03_{-0.05}^{+0.06} assuming the standard model value for a_{τ}. To measure a_{τ}, a template fit to the muon transverse-momentum distribution from τ-lepton candidates is performed, using a dimuon (γγ→μμ) control sample to constrain systematic uncertainties. Strong Constraints on Jet Quenching in Centrality-Dependent p+Pb Collisions at 5.02 TeV from ATLAS

Jet quenching is the process of color-charged partons losing energy via interactions with quark-gluon plasma droplets created in heavy-ion collisions. The collective expansion of such droplets is well described by viscous hydrodynamics. Similar evidence of collectivity is consistently observed in smaller collision systems, including pp and p+Pb collisions. In contrast, while jet quenching is observed in Pb+Pb collisions, no evidence has been found in these small systems to date, raising fundamental questions about the nature of the system created in these collisions. The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider has measured the yield of charged hadrons correlated with reconstructed jets in 0.36  nb^{-1} of p+Pb and 3.6  pb^{-1} of pp collisions at 5.02 TeV. The yields of charged hadrons with p_{T}^{ch}>0.5  GeV near and opposite in azimuth to jets with p_{T}^{jet}>30 or 60 GeV, and the ratios of these yields between p+Pb and pp collisions, I_{pPb}, are reported. The collision centrality of p+Pb events is categorized by the energy deposited by forward neutrons from the struck nucleus. The I_{pPb} values are consistent with unity within a few percent for hadrons with p_{T}^{ch}>4  GeV at all centralities. These data provide new, strong constraints that preclude almost any parton energy loss in central p+Pb collisions.

Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons in Decays of W Bosons Using a Dilepton Displaced Vertex in sqrt[s]=13 TeV pp Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

A search for a long-lived, heavy neutral lepton (N) in 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is reported. The N is produced via W→Nμ or W→Ne and decays into two charged leptons and a neutrino, forming a displaced vertex. The N mass is used to discriminate between signal and background. No signal is observed, and limits are set on the squared mixing parameters of the N with the left-handed neutrino states for the N mass range 3  GeV Collapse

Test of CP Invariance in Higgs Boson Vector-Boson-Fusion Production Using the H→γγ Channel with the ATLAS Detector

A test of CP invariance in Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion has been performed in the H→γγ channel using 139  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The optimal observable method is used to probe the CP structure of interactions between the Higgs boson and electroweak gauge bosons, as described by an effective field theory. No sign of CP violation is observed in the data. Constraints are set on the parameters describing the strength of the CP-odd component in the coupling between the Higgs boson and the electroweak gauge bosons in two effective field theory bases: d[over ˜] in the HISZ basis and c_{HW[over ˜]} in the Warsaw basis. The results presented are the most stringent constraints on CP violation in the coupling between Higgs and weak bosons. The 95% C.L. constraint on d[over ˜] is derived for the first time and the 95% C.L. constraint on c_{HW[over ˜]} has been improved by a factor of 5 compared to the previous measurement.

Frail patients who fall and their risk on major bleeding and intracranial haemorrhage. Outcomes from the Fall and Syncope Registry

BACKGROUND

Major bleeding, and intracranial bleeding specifically, are severe complications related to the use of anticoagulation. To what extent the risk for major bleeding is elevated among frail older people is not well known because they are underrepresented in the randomized clinical trials (RCTs). This study investigates the risk for major bleeding (MB) and intra cranial haemorrhage (ICH) in frail older people who fall.

METHODS

All patients 65 years and older visiting the Fall and Syncope Clinic, between November 2011 and January 2020, and underwent a MRI of the brain were eligible. Frailty was assessed with a Frailty Index, based on the accumulation of deficits model. Cerebral small vessel disease was described and evaluated as proposed in the position paper of Wardlaw and colleagues in 2013.

RESULTS

479 patients were included in this analysis. Mean follow-up was 7 years per patient (ranging from 1 month to 8 years and 5 months). 368 patients (77%) were frail. A total of 81 patients used oral anticoagulation (OAC). 17 extracranial MB of which 3 were traumatic and 14 gastrointestinal, and 16 ICH occurred. There was a total of 603.4 treatment years with OAC, and 8 MBs occurred among patients on OAC (bleeding rate 1.32 per 100 treatment years), of which 2 ICHs (bleeding rate 0.33 per 100 treatment years). The risk for extracranial MB was increased by the use of antiplatelet agents (APA) (adjusted OR 6.9, CI 95% 1.2-38.3), and by the use of OAC (adjusted OR 9.8, CI 95% 1.7-56.1). The risk for ICH was only heightened by white matter hyperintensities (WMH) (adjusted OR 3.8, CI 95% 1.0-13.4). The use of APA (adjusted OR 0.9, CI 95% 0.3-3.3) or OAC (adjusted OR 0.6, CI 95% 0.1-3.3) did not elevate the risk for ICH.

CONCLUSION

In contrast to common belief, frail patients on OAC with repeated falls show a comparable bleeding rate as in the large RCTs, and the use of OAC did not increase the risk for ICH. However, the number of MBs was low, and of ICHs very low, despite extensive follow-up in this registry.

Temporal evolution of liver function parameters predicts clinical outcome in chronic heart failure patients (Bio-SHiFT Study)

Background

Liver dysfunction contributes to worse clinical outcome in heart failure (HF) patients, and cholestatic enzymes are associated with mortality in the setting of chronic HF (CHF). However, the temporal evolutions of liver function parameters in stable CHF patients, and their associations with clinical outcome, have not yet been investigated.

Purpose

We aimed to investigate in detail the temporal patterns of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGTP), total bilirubin (TBIL) and albumin (ALB), and their relation with clinical outcome, in patients with stable CHF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).

Methods

During 2.2 (1.4–2.5) years of follow-up, we collected 1984 tri-monthly plasma samples in 263 patients. We selected 749 samples in the 250 HFrEF patients included in the study - all baseline samples, the last two samples before censoring in event-free patients, and the last two samples preceding the primary endpoint (PEP; composite of cardiac death, heart transplantation, LVAD implantation, and hospitalization for the management of acute or worsened HF). In these samples ALP, GGTP, and ALB were measured using colorimetric assays, TBIL using diazomethod, all by Roche/Hitachi Cobas c analyser. The relationship between repeatedly measured biomarker levels and the PEP was evaluated by joint models.

Results

Mean age was 68±18 years; 74% were men, 25% in NYHA class III or IV. 66 patients (26%) reached the PEP.

Repeatedly measured levels of TBIL, ALP, GGTP and ALB were associated with the PEP in a model adjusted for NT-proBNP and hs-TnT (hazard ratio (HR) [95% confidence interval] per doubling of biomarker level: 1.98 [1.32; 2.95], p=0.002; 1.84 [1.09; 3.05], p=0.018, 1.33 [1.08; 1.63], p=0.006 and 1.14 [1.09; 1.20], p&lt;0.001, respectively). Serially measured ALP and GGTP remained significantly associated with the PEP after adjustment for clinical covariates (HR [95% CI]: 1.13 [1.07; 1.19], p=0.018; 1.03 [1.01; 1.06], p=0.006, respectively).

The levels of ALP and GGTP were higher in patients who experienced the PEP than in event-free patients long before the PEP occurred (&gt;2 years), and as the PEP approached, levels diverged slightly between those with and without the PEP (Figure 1). Conversely, levels of ALB were higher in those with subsequent PEP, &gt;2 years before the PEP, and subsequently fell; while TBIL levels rose less than 1 year before the PEP in those with subsequent PEP. The slopes of the temporal evolution of ALB and TBIL, adjusted for clinical variables, were also significantly associated with the PEP (HR [95% CI] per 20% decrease in the slope for albumin and increase in the slope of TBIL per year: 1.61 [1.43; 1.84], p&lt;0.001 and 1.72 [1.28; 2.55], p&lt;0.001, respectively).

Conclusions

Changes in serum levels of TBIL, ALP, GGTP and ALB precede adverse cardiovascular events in patients with CHF. These routine liver function parameters may provide additional prognostic information in HFrEF patients in clinical practice.

The effects of colchicine in patients with diabetes mellitus and chronic coronary artery disease: a post-hoc analysis of the LoDoCo2-trial

Background

Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease and is accelerated by diabetes mellitus (DM). Patients with chronic coronary artery disease (CAD) who also have DM are at high risk of recurrent cardiovascular events. The role of inflammation in atherosclerosis is well established, whereas the role of inflammation on incident and progression of DM has been hypothesized. The nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-, leucine-rich repeat-, and pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome in particular, may play an important role in the onset and progression of T2DM. The anti-inflammatory drug colchicine attenuates the NLRP3-inflammasome. The Low-Dose Colchicine 2 (LoDoCo2) trial showed that colchicine reduces cardiovascular risk in patients with chronic CAD.

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of colchicine in patients with chronic CAD and DM on cardiovascular events as well as the effect of colchicine on the development of new-onset DM.

Methods

The LoDoCo2 trial randomized 5522 to placebo or colchicine, with a median follow-up of 28.6 months (interquartile range 20.5–44.4). The primary endpoint was a composite of cardiovascular death, spontaneous myocardial infarction, ischaemic stroke, or ischaemia-driven revascularization. Secondary outcomes consisted of the aforementioned events, separately. Cox proportional hazards models were used to investigate univariable associations between DM status for all endpoints in the placebo group. The interactions between treatment group and DM status were evaluated with the addition of treatment and the treatment-by-DM variable interaction.

Results

In total, 1007 participants (18.2%) had DM at baseline. The hazard ratio for the primary endpoint was 0.87 (95% CI, 0.61–1.25) in those with DM and 0.64 (95% CI, 0.51–0.80) in those without DM (p for interaction&gt;0.05). Treatment effects of colchicine were consistent over all secondary endpoints (p for interaction&gt;0.05). The incidence of new-onset DM was 1.5% (34/2270) in the colchicine group and 2.2% (49/2245) in the placebo group (p=0.10). Participants with DM were at higher risk for all endpoints. The primary composite end point in the placebo group occurred in 13.0% (67/515) patients with DM and in 8.8% (197/2245) of the patients without DM (unadjusted hazard ratio 1.54 [95% CI 1.16–2.03, p&lt;0.01]) compared to the group without DM. DM was also strongly associated with the occurrence of all secondary end points.

Conclusion

This study shows that the beneficial effects of colchicine on cardiovascular endpoints are consistent regardless of DM status. The data indicate that larger trials are needed to assess whether colchicine reduces the incidence of new-onset DM.

Observation of WWW Production in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of WWW production and a measurement of its cross section using 139  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with two same-sign leptons (electrons or muons) and at least two jets, as well as events with three charged leptons, are selected. A multivariate technique is then used to discriminate between signal and background events. Events from WWW production are observed with a significance of 8.0 standard deviations, where the expectation is 5.4 standard deviations. The inclusive WWW production cross section is measured to be 820±100 (stat)±80 (syst)  fb, approximately 2.6 standard deviations from the predicted cross section of 511±18  fb calculated at next-to-leading-order QCD and leading-order electroweak accuracy.

A detailed map of Higgs boson interactions by the ATLAS experiment ten years after the discovery

The standard model of particle physics1-4 describes the known fundamental particles and forces that make up our Universe, with the exception of gravity. One of the central features of the standard model is a field that permeates all of space and interacts with fundamental particles5-9. The quantum excitation of this field, known as the Higgs field, manifests itself as the Higgs boson, the only fundamental particle with no spin. In 2012, a particle with properties consistent with the Higgs boson of the standard model was observed by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN10,11. Since then, more than 30 times as many Higgs bosons have been recorded by the ATLAS experiment, enabling much more precise measurements and new tests of the theory. Here, on the basis of this larger dataset, we combine an unprecedented number of production and decay processes of the Higgs boson to scrutinize its interactions with elementary particles. Interactions with gluons, photons, and W and Z bosons-the carriers of the strong, electromagnetic and weak forces-are studied in detail. Interactions with three third-generation matter particles (bottom (b) and top (t) quarks, and tau leptons (τ)) are well measured and indications of interactions with a second-generation particle (muons, μ) are emerging. These tests reveal that the Higgs boson discovered ten years ago is remarkably consistent with the predictions of the theory and provide stringent constraints on many models of new phenomena beyond the standard model.

Liraglutide treatment attenuates dysfunction-related changes in the cardiac and cerebral microvasculature in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

Background

Diabetes mellitus (DM) induces cardiac and cerebral microvascular dysfunction via increased glycation, oxidative stress and endothelial activation. Liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor analogue, inhibited the reactive oxygen species producing enzyme NOX2 and adhesion molecules in isolated endothelial cells. Here we have studied how Liraglutide affects advanced glycation, NOX expression and inflammatory status of the cardiac and cerebral microvasculature in vivo in diabetic rats.

Methods

DM was induced in Sprague Dawley rats (n=15) via intraperitoneal streptozotocin (STZ) injection (60 mg/kg body weight). 10 control rats remained non-diabetic. From day 9 post-STZ injection, Liraglutide (200 µg/kg bodyweight; n=7) or vehicle (n=8) was injected subcutaneously daily until termination on day 29. The advanced glycation end-product N-ε-(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML), NOX2, NOX4, ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 were subsequently analysed using immunohistochemistry and quantified to compare Liraglutide treatment to placebo.

Results

DM increased CML, NOX2, ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 in the intramyocardial vasculature, although not significant for NOX2. NOX4 was not significantly increased in the ventricles and absent in the atria. In the cerebral vasculature, CML, NOX2 and NOX4 were significantly increased, but not ICAM-1 and VCAM-1. Liraglutide significantly reduced the DM-associated CML accumulation and expression of NOX2, ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 in the intramyocardial, and CML, NOX2 and NOX4 in the cerebral vasculature. Liraglutide had these effects without changing blood glucose levels or body weight.

Conclusions

Our study implies that Liraglutide protects the cardiac and cerebral microvasculature against diabetes-induced dysfunction, independent of a blood glucose lowering effect in a type 1 diabetes rat model.

POS0214 CORONARY MICROVASCULAR DYSFUNCTION IN PATIENTS WITH RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS AND DIABETES MELLITUS: A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY WITH 13NH3 MYOCARDIAL PET/CT

Background

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease. This risk is similar to that of diabetes mellitus (DM). There have been no studies comparing the coronary microvascular dysfunction assessed with coronary flow reserve (CFR) of RA patients to both patients with DM and a control group (=patients without RA, without DM and no cardiovascular event).

Objectives

To assess the difference in coronary microvascular dysfunction in patients with RA in comparison to patients with DM and control group.

Methods

From our 13NH3 myocardial PET/CT registry we included all patients that were included from December 2013 until March 2019. A total of 33 patients with RA, 299 patients with DM and 179 control patients (=patients without RA and without DM) were analyzed. Myocardial blood flow was quantified at rest and under stress induced by administrating adenosine. Coronary flow reserve was calculated by dividing MBF under stress by MBF in rest. CFR < 2 was indicative for coronary microvascular dysfunction.

Results

The mean age of patients was 66, with more females in the RA and control group vs the DM group (67% and 69% vs 49% respectively). The total MBF, under adenosine administration, measured in RA patients was higher than DM patients albeit that this did not reach statistical significance (2.26 ± -,70 vs 2,05 ± 0,63 mL/min/g, p=0.08). When compared to controls, the MBF of RA patients was significantly lower (2,94 ± 0,44 vs 2,26 ± 0,70, p < 0.001). The coronary flow reserve (CFR) of patients with RA was similar to patients with DM (2.20 ± 0,69 vs 2,21 ± 0,70 mL/min/g, p=0.977). The CFR of the control group was significantly higher than those of the RA patients (3,03 ± 0,64 vs 2.20 ± 0,69 mL/min/g, p<0.000) and of the DM patients (3,03 ± 0,64 vs 2.21 ± 0,70 mL/min/g, p<0.000). 42% of RA- and 38% of DM patients had coronary microvascular dysfunction, compared to 4% in the control group.

Conclusion

Our results indicate an impaired coronary blood flow in both patients with RA and DM in similar levels. Both patient groups had significantly more coronary microvascular dysfunction.

Search for Lepton-Flavor Violation in Z-Boson Decays with τ Leptons with the ATLAS Detector

A search for lepton-flavor-violating Z→eτ and Z→μτ decays with pp collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. This analysis uses 139  fb^{-1} of Run 2 pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV and is combined with the results of a similar ATLAS search in the final state in which the τ lepton decays hadronically, using the same data set as well as Run 1 data. The addition of leptonically decaying τ leptons significantly improves the sensitivity reach for Z→ℓτ decays. The Z→ℓτ branching fractions are constrained in this analysis to B(Z→eτ)<7.0×10^{-6} and B(Z→μτ)<7.2×10^{-6} at 95% confidence level. The combination with the previously published analyses sets the strongest constraints to date: B(Z→eτ)<5.0×10^{-6} and B(Z→μτ)<6.5×10^{-6} at 95% confidence level.

Predictors for intra cranial haemorrhage in frail elderly patients with frequent falls using antithrombotic medication

Background

Physicians can be reluctant to prescribe antithrombotic agents in frail elderly patients with frequent falls due to the fear for severe bleeding, mainly for intracranial haemorrhage (ICH). Presently, there is only a limited amount of inconclusive data available on the topic.

Purpose

Identification of risk factors for ICH within a cohort of geriatric patients with repeated falls.

Methods

All patients of 65 years of age and older with repeated falls at our day clinic were eligible. If an MRI of the brain was performed as part of the assessment, patients were included in this analysis. Baseline characteristics including medical, functional, and cognitive state were collected, a Frailty Index (FI) was calculated [1,2]. Cerebral small vessel disease was described and evaluated as proposed in a position paper in 2013 [3]. Follow-up data concerning major bleeding events were retrieved from the electronic medical files. Odds ratios (OR) with confidence intervals (CI) were calculated.

Results

670 patients were eligible; an MRI was performed in 486 patients. The average age was 80 years, 50% was severely frail at the time of inclusion. 83 patients (17%) used OAC (mainly Vitamin K antagonists prescribed for atrial fibrillation), 165 patients (34%) used anti platelet agents (APA), 1 patient used both OAC and APA. In total, 29 major bleeding events (MB) occurred, of which 13 were ICH. Among patients using OAC, 8 MB occurred, of which 2 were ICH. The patient with both OAC and APA did not experience a bleeding event. Well known risk factors for ICH such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus and cognitive impairment were not predictive for ICH in this cohort, nor were the use APA (OR 0.86, 95% CI 0.26–2.84), or vitamin K antagonists (OR 0.88, 95% CI 0.19–4.05). However, a composite factor of using either APA or OAC, heightened the risk for MB (OR 3.24, 95% CI 1.35–7.74), but not for ICH (OR 0.83, 95% 0.27–2.49). Of cerebral small vessel disease, predictive factors for ICH were the presence of lacunes (OR 3.81, 95% CI 1.25–11.56), and relevant white matter hyperintensities (WMH) (defined as a Fazekas score of 2 or more) (OR 11.3, 95% CI 1.45–87.3). Furthermore, cognitive decline defined as an MMSE score of ≤26 heightened the risk of MB (OR 2.28, 95% CI 1.05–4.96). The low number of ICH did not allow for a multivariate analysis.

Conclusion

This analysis has several important findings. First, despite the long follow up of a cohort of severely frail patients that frequently fall, a low number of MB and ICH was observed. Second, well known risk factors for MB do not seem predictive of ICH in this cohort of very elderly patients. Finally, cognitive decline was predictive for MB, and WMH and lacunes were predictive for ICH. Adding cognitive screening and brain imaging to the diagnostic work up of patients with an indication for OAC could be of value when assessing the future risk for major bleeding events.

Higher mortality in frail elderly with atrial fibrillation using oral anticoagulants

Background/Introduction

Frail older persons with falls are often undertreated for atrial fibrillation (AF) due to fear of bleeding complications of oral anticoagulants (OAC). However, the safety of OAC use in frail elderly with AF and falls is not investigated extensively.

Purpose

The aim of the study was to investigate whether frail older persons with falls and OAC for AF have more bleeding complications than patients without OAC and to investigate the association between frailty, OAC therapy (including bleeding complications), and mortality.

Methods

This observational study included frail patients aged 65 years or older who were evaluated for falls between November 2011 and December 2019. Patients using OAC for AF were compared with similar patients without using OAC.

Primary outcomes were death, major bleeding and intracranial bleeding. Secondary outcomes were frailty measured by the Frailty Index and cause of death.

Results

Of the 645 included patients, 132 had AF and used OAC. Patients with AF were more often severely frail (67% vs. 47%, p&lt;0.001) and had a higher mortality during follow up (39% vs. 27%, p=0.005). Patients using OAC had a higher mortality risk compared to the patients without OAC (crude analysis Hazard Ratio (HR) 1.7 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.3–2.4), p=0.001; after adjustment for age, gender, and frailty index HR 1.4 (95% CI 0.99–1.9) p=0.056). No differences were found in the incidence of major bleedings (10% vs. 7%, p=0.204) or intracranial bleedings (5% vs. 4%, p=0.739) in both groups. The causes of death were similar in both groups, also the incidence of fatal bleedings did not differ (5% vs 7%, p=0.758).

Conclusions

Elderly with falls and AF using OAC are frailer and have a tendency to a higher mortality risk than patients without AF. These frail elderly patients with falls had no more bleeding complications during OAC treatment than comparable patients without OAC. Therefore, withholding OAC out of fear for major bleeding complications is not justified.

It is unclear why elderly persons with AF and OAC are frailer and die sooner, since the incidence of major bleedings and fatal bleedings is equal. Further research should focus why older frail persons with AF are more prone to die.

Search for New Phenomena in Final States with Two Leptons and One or No b-Tagged Jets at sqrt[s]=13 TeV Using the ATLAS Detector

A search for new phenomena is presented in final states with two leptons and one or no b-tagged jets. The event selection requires the two leptons to have opposite charge, the same flavor (electrons or muons), and a large invariant mass. The analysis is based on the full run-2 proton-proton collision dataset recorded at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=13  TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139  fb^{-1}. No significant deviation from the expected background is observed in the data. Inspired by the B-meson decay anomalies, a four-fermion contact interaction between two quarks (b, s) and two leptons (ee or μμ) is used as a benchmark signal model, which is characterized by the energy scale and coupling, Λ and g_{*}, respectively. Contact interactions with Λ/g_{*} lower than 2.0 (2.4) TeV are excluded for electrons (muons) at the 95% confidence level, still far below the value that is favored by the B-meson decay anomalies. Model-independent limits are set as a function of the minimum dilepton invariant mass, which allow the results to be reinterpreted in various signal scenarios.

Search for Displaced Leptons in sqrt[s]=13 TeV pp Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

A search for charged leptons with large impact parameters using 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV pp collision data from the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented, addressing a long-standing gap in coverage of possible new physics signatures. Results are consistent with the background prediction. This search provides unique sensitivity to long-lived scalar supersymmetric lepton partners (sleptons). For lifetimes of 0.1 ns, selectron, smuon, and stau masses up to 720, 680, and 340  GeV, respectively, are excluded at 95% confidence level, drastically improving on the previous best limits from LEP.

Seroepizootiological investigation on Goat Warble Fly Infestation (Przhevalskiana silenus) in Pothwar Plateau, Pakistan

Goat Warble Fly Infestation (GWFI) is also known as subcutaneous myiasis caused by Przhevalskiana silenus (Diptera: Oestridae). It is widely distributed in tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world. In goats, WFI is usually detected through conventional procedure which underestimated the infestation. The current study was designed to determine the serodiagonsis of GWFI (through IDEXX Hypodermosis serum antibody test) and also aimed to investigate its seroepizootiological profile in Pothwar region, Pakistan from 2013-14. The results showed that average seropositivity (ELISA kit) of GWFI was 18.5% whereas, it was 11% by using conventional procedure (Palpation method) depicting a significant difference (p<0.05). Higher seropositivity (30.8%) was observed in Jhelum district as compared to e Attock district (6%). The L1 larvae were found in September, while nodules start appearing in October to December and last until the end of February. The month wise peaks of optical density (OD) was higher in December which gradually decrease along with the end of winter season. The prevalence of GWFI revealed no significant difference among three host breeds (Jattal, Beetal and Tedy). According to the results, high infestation rate (28%) was observed in young animals of age group < 1 year as compared to old animals (> 2 years). Topographically, hilly areas (33%) provide favourable climatic conditions for the propagating of larval stages. Sex difference showed no significant difference. The seroprevalence varied significantly with respect to age, month, districts and topographical location. The current study proved that serologic diagnosis (commercial ELISA kit) as more sensitive and accurate for timely diagnosis of GWFI than traditional method. The information on the epizootiology of P. silenus in goats of Pothwar region would help in devising effective control strategies.

Morphometric measurements of safety zones and orientation angles for freehand placement of revision screws in atlas lateral mass

AIM

To demonstrate the possibility of revision screw placement to the atlas, as well as define the safety zones and orientation angles.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

This retrospective study analysed the records of four patients who were operated for AAI earlier. Because they needed revision of Atlas screws, they were re-operated after obtaining the measurements mentioned in this study. In addition, measurements of 50 healthy subjects were included in the study as the control group. Maximum screw lengths were also measured.

RESULTS

Safe zone in the ideal sagittal direction were wider. As the screw projection becomes more cephalic direction in the sagittal plane, the safe zone for the screw becomes narrower. With the sagittal angle moving forwards cranially, the screw length becomes longer.

CONCLUSION

Atlas lateral mass screws could be safely revised whenever needed. The fact that needs to be considered is that the angular range becomes narrower, and the screw length becomes longer when the screw is directed more cranially.

Gynecomastia as a presenting symptom of Graves' disease in a 49-year-old man

SUMMARY

Gynecomastia is a symptom with a potential high disease burden. It has a variety of underlying causes, such as malignant, drug-related or hormonal. The presence of gynecomastia can be explained in thyrotoxicosis due to a concomitant disbalance of sex hormones. Interestingly, it rarely is the presenting symptom of Graves' disease. A 49-year-old man presented to our outpatient clinic with right-sided gynecomastia. After thorough history taking, more symptoms of thyrotoxicosis were present. Treatment was started with thiamazole and later levothyroxine. Three months after this treatment the gynecomastia and other symptoms resolved completely. A disbalance of sex hormones due to an increased expression of the protein sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) caused by thyrotoxicosis could result in gynecomastia. In vitro and in vivo research in mice suggest that the pathophysiology of thyrotoxicosis-associated gynecomastia is due to upregulation of hepatocyte nuclear factor-4α (HNF4A) in liver cells. Subsequent increase of SHBG results in a decrease of free testosterone levels.

LEARNING POINTS

Gynecomastia is a common finding (up to almost 40%) on physical examination in patients with hyperthyroidism. In gynecomastia, thyroid function tests should be examined on initial presentation because of the relative simple treatment. The pathophysiology of thyrotoxicosis-associated gynecomastia is well understood by a sex-hormonal disbalance due to an increased expression of SHBG. Due to the well explainable pathophysiology, reduction of symptoms can be expected after treatment. The underlying mechanism of an increased expression of SHBG is not well understood. However, in vitro and in vivo research in mice suggests that thyrotoxicosis causes an increased expression of HNF4A in liver cells. Thus, upregulating the expression of SHBG. Interestingly, HNF4A is suspected to play an important role in MODY. Future research will clarify the importance of this gene and might open up new insights for therapy.

Longitudinal Flow Decorrelations in Xe+Xe Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.44 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

The first measurement of longitudinal decorrelations of harmonic flow amplitudes v_{n} for n=2-4 in Xe+Xe collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.44  TeV is obtained using 3  μb^{-1} of data with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The decorrelation signal for v_{3} and v_{4} is found to be nearly independent of collision centrality and transverse momentum (p_{T}) requirements on final-state particles, but for v_{2} a strong centrality and p_{T} dependence is seen. When compared with the results from Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV, the longitudinal decorrelation signal in midcentral Xe+Xe collisions is found to be larger for v_{2}, but smaller for v_{3}. Current hydrodynamic models reproduce the ratios of the v_{n} measured in Xe+Xe collisions to those in Pb+Pb collisions but fail to describe the magnitudes and trends of the ratios of longitudinal flow decorrelations between Xe+Xe and Pb+Pb. The results on the system-size dependence provide new insights and an important lever arm to separate effects of the longitudinal structure of the initial state from other early and late time effects in heavy-ion collisions.

Search for Dark Matter Produced in Association with a Dark Higgs Boson Decaying into W^{±}W^{∓} or ZZ in Fully Hadronic Final States from sqrt[s]=13 TeV pp Collisions Recorded with the ATLAS Detector

Several extensions of the Standard Model predict the production of dark matter particles at the LHC. An uncharted signature of dark matter particles produced in association with VV=W^{±}W^{∓} or ZZ pairs from a decay of a dark Higgs boson s is searched for using 139  fb^{-1} of pp collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The s→V(qq[over ¯])V(qq[over ¯]) decays are reconstructed with a novel technique aimed at resolving the dense topology from boosted VV pairs using jets in the calorimeter and tracking information. Dark Higgs scenarios with m_{s}>160  GeV are excluded.

Coexistent subclinical hypothyroidism is associated with an increased risk of new cardiovascular events in rheumatoid arthritis: an explorative study

Objective: Autoimmune thyroid disease often coexists with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and is associated with elevated cardiovascular (CV) risk. However, studies in RA patients are scarce. Our aim was to investigate whether autoimmune thyroid disease increases the risk of new cardiovascular disease (CVD) in RA.Method: Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and serum free thyroxine (FT4) were assessed in 323 RA patients participating in an ongoing prospective cohort study designed to assess CV risk factors, morbidity, and mortality. Cox proportional hazard models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) for new CVD and adjusted for age, gender, smoking, prevalent CVD, thyroxine replacement therapy, and RA duration.Results: Of the 323 participants, 65.3% were female, and mean ± sd age was 63 ± 7 years. At baseline, 8.1% were hypothyroid (n = 26, 16 clinical, 10 subclinical), 6.8% hyperthyroid (n = 22, 13 clinical, 9 subclinical), and 85.1% (n = 275) euthyroid. A new CV event developed in 94 patients (29.1%) during follow-up. Compared to euthyroid patients, the HR adjusted for age, gender, and prevalent CVD was 2.83 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.13-7.09; p = 0.026] for subclinical hypothyroidism. Further adjustment for smoking, thyroxine replacement therapy, and RA duration resulted in an HR of 3.0 (95% CI 1.19-7.54; p = 0.02) for CV events in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism.Conclusion: There was no difference in CVD between RA patients with hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism versus euthyroid patients. Coexistence of subclinical hypothyroidism with RA is associated with a higher occurrence of new CV events. Treatment trials are needed to determine whether thyroxine supplementation can further improve CV outcome in these patients.

Accuracy of an algorithm to identify rheumatoid arthritis in the Longitudinal Ageing Study Amsterdam population: a validation study

Objective: In view of global ageing and the scarcity of knowledge about disease determinants in older individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an algorithm with optimal diagnostic accuracy was developed to identify RA patients in the Longitudinal Ageing Study Amsterdam (LASA).Method: Four case ascertainment algorithms were constructed and assessed for validity in LASA, an ongoing cohort study (≥ 55 years) representing the general older population of the Netherlands. Data sources used to identify the diagnosis RA were: self-reported morbidity, specialist diagnosis, and medication. A validation subsample of LASA participants was taken to verify RA diagnosis by a standard procedure using a checklist.Results: Data from 272/300 (91%) participants were verified. Four algorithms were developed: 'treatment', 'diagnosis', 'treatment or diagnosis', and 'treatment and diagnosis'. The algorithm 'treatment and diagnosis' showed the best measurement properties: specificity 100%, positive predictive value 100%, and area under the receiver operating characteristics curve 0.72. Applying this algorithm in the LASA sample (mean age 71 years) revealed a prevalence of RA of 1.0% (19/1908 participants).Conclusion: An algorithm for RA identification in the LASA population was developed, with high diagnostic accuracy. It provides an accurate tool to identify older adults with RA in LASA and, after validation, may be applicable in other large population-based studies.

In-silico Analysis of Mt-CO1 Gene of Taenia Hydatigena Sheep Isolates

Taenia hydatigena is a tapeworm that affects herbivores in different regions of the world. Cysticercus tenuicollis (larvae of T. hydatigena), is prevalent in ruminants and pigs. In the current study, phylogenetic analysis of the published mt-CO1 gene of C. tenuicollis sheep isolates was analyzed using in-silico method and vertical and horizontal transmission at the global level by using a meta-analysis approach. A total of 82 mt-CO1 nucleotide sequences (339 bp) of C. tenuicollis sheep isolates from the NCBI database (Italy -Sardinia-, Iran, Palestine, Iraq, Finland, India and China) were used to investigate haplotype and genetic relationships. Tajima's D (-2,2984) value was negative for the mt-CO1 sequences signifying the population expansion and/or purifying selection. The highly negative Fu's Fs (-60,528) values determined for the sequences reflecting the existence of uncommon haplotypes. The mt-CO1 of C. tenuicollis haplotype network had 47 haplotypes arranged within a star-like configuration with a main haplotype, which encompassed 25.6 % of the total isolates. In the mt-CO1 haplotype network analyzed, there were 80.5 % unique single haplotype and highest ratio was observed in C. tenuicollis from sheep originating from Iran, followed by Sardinia, Palestine and Finland. If the current condition continues, genetic differences in T. hydatigena will be able to rise, and possible new strains and/or genotypes that may influence the host adaptation and life cycle of the parasite may emerge.

Medium-Induced Modification of Z-Tagged Charged Particle Yields in Pb+Pb Collisions at 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

The yield of charged particles opposite to a Z boson with large transverse momentum (p_{T}) is measured in 260  pb^{-1} of pp and 1.7  nb^{-1} of Pb+Pb collision data at 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The Z boson tag is used to select hard-scattered partons with specific kinematics, and to observe how their showers are modified as they propagate through the quark-gluon plasma created in Pb+Pb collisions. Compared with pp collisions, charged-particle yields in Pb+Pb collisions show significant modifications as a function of charged-particle p_{T} in a way that depends on event centrality and Z boson p_{T}. The data are compared with a variety of theoretical calculations and provide new information about the medium-induced energy loss of partons in a p_{T} regime difficult to measure through other channels.

Observation and Measurement of Forward Proton Scattering in Association with Lepton Pairs Produced via the Photon Fusion Mechanism at ATLAS

The observation of forward proton scattering in association with lepton pairs (e^{+}e^{-}+p or μ^{+}μ^{-}+p) produced via photon fusion is presented. The scattered proton is detected by the ATLAS Forward Proton spectrometer, while the leptons are reconstructed by the central ATLAS detector. Proton-proton collision data recorded in 2017 at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=13  TeV are analyzed, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 14.6  fb^{-1}. A total of 57 (123) candidates in the ee+p (μμ+p) final state are selected, allowing the background-only hypothesis to be rejected with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations in each channel. Proton-tagging techniques are introduced for cross-section measurements in the fiducial detector acceptance, corresponding to σ_{ee+p}=11.0±2.6(stat)±1.2(syst)±0.3(lumi) and σ_{μμ+p}=7.2±1.6(stat)±0.9(syst)±0.2(lumi)  fb in the dielectron and dimuon channel, respectively.

Search for Heavy Resonances Decaying into a Photon and a Hadronically Decaying Higgs Boson in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter presents a search for the production of new heavy resonances decaying into a Higgs boson and a photon using proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139  fb^{-1}. The analysis is performed by reconstructing hadronically decaying Higgs boson (H→bb[over ¯]) candidates as single large-radius jets. A novel algorithm using information about the jet constituents in the center-of-mass frame of the jet is implemented to identify the two b quarks in the single jet. No significant excess of events is observed above the expected background. Upper limits are set on the production cross-section times branching fraction for narrow spin-1 resonances decaying into a Higgs boson and a photon in the resonance mass range from 0.7 to 4 TeV, cross-section times branching fractions are excluded between 11.6 fb and 0.11 fb at a 95% confidence level.

Search for Higgs Boson Decays into a Z Boson and a Light Hadronically Decaying Resonance Using 13 TeV pp Collision Data from the ATLAS Detector

A search for Higgs boson decays into a Z boson and a light resonance in two-lepton plus jet events is performed, using a pp collision dataset with an integrated luminosity of 139  fb^{-1} collected at sqrt[s]=13  TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC. The resonance considered is a light boson with a mass below 4 GeV from a possible extended scalar sector or a charmonium state. Multivariate discriminants are used for the event selection and for evaluating the mass of the light resonance. No excess of events above the expected background is found. Observed (expected) 95% confidence-level upper limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section times branching fraction to a Z boson and the signal resonance, with values in the range 17-340 pb (16_{-5}^{+6}-320_{-90}^{+130}  pb) for the different light spin-0 boson mass and branching fraction hypotheses, and with values of 110 and 100 pb (100_{-30}^{+40} and 100_{-30}^{+40}  pb) for the η_{c} and J/ψ hypotheses, respectively.

Dijet Resonance Search with Weak Supervision Using sqrt[s]=13 TeV pp Collisions in the ATLAS Detector

This Letter describes a search for narrowly resonant new physics using a machine-learning anomaly detection procedure that does not rely on signal simulations for developing the analysis selection. Weakly supervised learning is used to train classifiers directly on data to enhance potential signals. The targeted topology is dijet events and the features used for machine learning are the masses of the two jets. The resulting analysis is essentially a three-dimensional search A→BC, for m_{A}∼O(TeV), m_{B},m_{C}∼O(100  GeV) and B, C are reconstructed as large-radius jets, without paying a penalty associated with a large trials factor in the scan of the masses of the two jets. The full run 2 sqrt[s]=13  TeV pp collision dataset of 139  fb^{-1} recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is used for the search. There is no significant evidence of a localized excess in the dijet invariant mass spectrum between 1.8 and 8.2 TeV. Cross-section limits for narrow-width A, B, and C particles vary with m_{A}, m_{B}, and m_{C}. For example, when m_{A}=3  TeV and m_{B}≳200  GeV, a production cross section between 1 and 5 fb is excluded at 95% confidence level, depending on m_{C}. For certain masses, these limits are up to 10 times more sensitive than those obtained by the inclusive dijet search. These results are complementary to the dedicated searches for the case that B and C are standard model bosons.

The effect of anti-TNF treatment on body composition and insulin resistance in patients with rheumatoid arthritis

Given the link between systemic inflammation, body composition and insulin resistance (IR), anti-inflammatory therapy may improve IR and body composition in inflammatory joint diseases. This study assesses the IR and beta cell function in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with active disease compared to osteoarthritis (OA) patients and investigates the effect of anti-TNF treatment on IR, beta cell function and body composition in RA. 28 Consecutive RA patients starting anti-TNF treatment (adalimumab), and 28 age, and sex-matched patients with OA were followed for 6 months. Exclusion criteria were use of statins, corticosteroids, and cardiovascular or endocrine co-morbidity. Pancreatic beta cell function and IR, using the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA2), and body composition, using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) were measured at baseline and 6 months. At baseline, IR [1.5 (1.1–1.8) vs. 0.7 (0.6–0.9), 100/%S] and beta cell function (133% vs. 102%) were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in RA patients with active disease as compared to OA patients. After 6 months of anti-TNF treatment, IR [1.5 (1.1–1.8) to 1.4 (1.1–1.7), p = 0.17] slightly improved and beta cell function [133% (115–151) to 118% (109–130), p <0.05] significantly improved. Improvement in IR and beta cell function was most pronounced in RA patients with highest decrease in CRP and ESR. Our observations indicate that IR and increased beta cell function are more common in RA patients with active disease. Anti-TNF reduced IR and beta cell function especially in RA patients with highest decrease in systemic inflammation and this effect was not explained by changes in body composition.

CP Properties of Higgs Boson Interactions with Top Quarks in the tt[over ¯]H and tH Processes Using H→γγ with the ATLAS Detector

A study of the charge conjugation and parity (CP) properties of the interaction between the Higgs boson and top quarks is presented. Higgs bosons are identified via the diphoton decay channel (H→γγ), and their production in association with a top quark pair (tt[over ¯]H) or single top quark (tH) is studied. The analysis uses 139  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=13  TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Assuming a CP-even coupling, the tt[over ¯]H process is observed with a significance of 5.2 standard deviations. The measured cross section times H→γγ branching ratio is 1.64_{-0.36}^{+0.38}(stat)_{-0.14}^{+0.17}(sys)  fb, and the measured rate for tt[over ¯]H is 1.43_{-0.31}^{+0.33}(stat)_{-0.15}^{+0.21}(sys) times the Standard Model expectation. The tH production process is not observed and an upper limit on its rate of 12 times the Standard Model expectation is set. A CP-mixing angle greater (less) than 43 (-43)° is excluded at 95% confidence level.

Search for Heavy Higgs Bosons Decaying into Two Tau Leptons with the ATLAS Detector Using pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

A search for heavy neutral Higgs bosons is performed using the LHC Run 2 data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector. The search for heavy resonances is performed over the mass range 0.2-2.5 TeV for the τ^{+}τ^{-} decay with at least one τ-lepton decaying into final states with hadrons. The data are in good agreement with the background prediction of the standard model. In the M_{h}^{125} scenario of the minimal supersymmetric standard model, values of tanβ>8 and tanβ>21 are excluded at the 95% confidence level for neutral Higgs boson masses of 1.0 and 1.5 TeV, respectively, where tanβ is the ratio of the vacuum expectation values of the two Higgs doublets.

Measurement of the Lund Jet Plane Using Charged Particles in 13 TeV Proton-Proton Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

The prevalence of hadronic jets at the LHC requires that a deep understanding of jet formation and structure is achieved in order to reach the highest levels of experimental and theoretical precision. There have been many measurements of jet substructure at the LHC and previous colliders, but the targeted observables mix physical effects from various origins. Based on a recent proposal to factorize physical effects, this Letter presents a double-differential cross-section measurement of the Lund jet plane using 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector using jets with transverse momentum above 675 GeV. The measurement uses charged particles to achieve a fine angular resolution and is corrected for acceptance and detector effects. Several parton shower Monte Carlo models are compared with the data. No single model is found to be in agreement with the measured data across the entire plane.

Measurement of Azimuthal Anisotropy of Muons from Charm and Bottom Hadrons in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

The elliptic flow of muons from the decay of charm and bottom hadrons is measured in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV using a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 150  pb^{-1} recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The muons from heavy-flavor decay are separated from light-hadron decay muons using momentum imbalance between the tracking and muon spectrometers. The heavy-flavor decay muons are further separated into those from charm decay and those from bottom decay using the distance-of-closest-approach to the collision vertex. The measurement is performed for muons in the transverse momentum range 4-7 GeV and pseudorapidity range |η|<2.4. A significant nonzero elliptic anisotropy coefficient v_{2} is observed for muons from charm decays, while the v_{2} value for muons from bottom decays is consistent with zero within uncertainties.
