Abstract
We search for gravitational-wave signals produced by cosmic strings in the Advanced LIGO and Virgo full O3 dataset. Search results are presented for gravitational waves produced by cosmic string loop features such as cusps, kinks, and, for the first time, kink-kink collisions. A template-based search for short-duration transient signals does not yield a detection. We also use the stochastic gravitational-wave background energy density upper limits derived from the O3 data to constrain the cosmic string tension Gμ as a function of the number of kinks, or the number of cusps, for two cosmic string loop distribution models. Additionally, we develop and test a third model that interpolates between these two models. Our results improve upon the previous LIGO-Virgo constraints on Gμ by 1 to 2 orders of magnitude depending on the model that is tested. In particular, for the one-loop distribution model, we set the most competitive constraints to date: Gμ≲4×10^{-15}. In the case of cosmic strings formed at the end of inflation in the context of grand unified theories, these results challenge simple inflationary models.

Abstract
We present our current best estimate of the plausible observing scenarios for the Advanced LIGO, Advanced Virgo and KAGRA gravitational-wave detectors over the next several years, with the intention of providing information to facilitate planning for multi-messenger astronomy with gravitational waves. We estimate the sensitivity of the network to transient gravitational-wave signals for the third (O3), fourth (O4) and fifth observing (O5) runs, including the planned upgrades of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. We study the capability of the network to determine the sky location of the source for gravitational-wave signals from the inspiral of binary systems of compact objects, that is binary neutron star, neutron star-black hole, and binary black hole systems. The ability to localize the sources is given as a sky-area probability, luminosity distance, and comoving volume. The median sky localization area (90% credible region) is expected to be a few hundreds of square degrees for all types of binary systems during O3 with the Advanced LIGO and Virgo (HLV) network. The median sky localization area will improve to a few tens of square degrees during O4 with the Advanced LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA (HLVK) network. During O3, the median localization volume (90% credible region) is expected to be on the order of 10 5 , 10 6 , 10 7 Mpc 3 for binary neutron star, neutron star-black hole, and binary black hole systems, respectively. The localization volume in O4 is expected to be about a factor two smaller than in O3. We predict a detection count of 1 - 1 + 12 ( 10 - 10 + 52 ) for binary neutron star mergers, of 0 - 0 + 19 ( 1 - 1 + 91 ) for neutron star-black hole mergers, and 17 - 11 + 22 ( 79 - 44 + 89 ) for binary black hole mergers in a one-calendar-year observing run of the HLV network during O3 (HLVK network during O4). We evaluate sensitivity and localization expectations for unmodeled signal searches, including the search for intermediate mass black hole binary mergers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Although resection of a tumor by trans-sphenoidal surgery is considered the criterion standard for successful surgical treatment of functional pituitary microadenoma, MR imaging occasionally fails to visualize and identify the tumor and supplementary imaging modalities are necessary. We tested the possibility of dynamic contrast-enhanced multisection CT of the pituitary gland accompanying image reconstruction of contrast agent dynamics to identify the localizations of microadenomas and compared the diagnostic performance with conventional pituitary-targeted MR imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-eight patients with surgically confirmed functional pituitary microadenomas (including growth hormone-, adrenocorticotropic hormone-, and prolactin-secreting adenomas) who underwent pituitary-targeted dynamic contrast-enhanced multisection CT were retrospectively investigated. We undertook image reconstruction of the dynamics of the contrast agent around the pituitary gland in a voxelwise manner, visualizing any abnormality and enabling qualification of contrast dynamics within the tumor. RESULTS Fifteen cases were correctly diagnosed by MR imaging, while dynamic contrast-enhanced multisection CT correctly diagnosed 26 cases. The accuracy of localization was markedly better for adrenocorticotropic hormone-secreting microadenomas, increasing from 32% on MR imaging to 85% by dynamic contrast-enhanced multisection CT. Compared with the normal pituitary gland, adrenocorticotropic hormone-secreting adenoma showed the least difference in contrast enhancement of the different functional microadenomas. Images acquired at 45-60 seconds after contrast agent injection showed the largest difference in contrast enhancement between an adenoma and the normal pituitary gland. CONCLUSIONS Dynamic contrast-enhanced multisection CT combined with image reconstruction of the contrast-enhanced dynamics holds promise in detecting MR imaging-occult pituitary microadenomas.

Abstract
The effects of the affectionless control (AC) parenting style on personality traits were studied in 414 Japanese healthy subjects. Perceived parental rearing was assessed by the Parental Bonding Instrument, which comprises care and protection factors, and personality traits were assessed by the Temperament and Character Inventory, which has seven dimensions. Parental rearing was classified into four types, i.e., optimal parenting (high care/low protection), affectionate constraint (high care/high protection), neglectful parenting (low care/low protection), and AC (low care/high protection). Males with maternal AC showed significantly higher harm avoidance (HA) scores and lower scores of persistence and cooperativeness than those with maternal optimal parenting. Females with maternal AC showed significantly higher HA scores and lower self-directedness scores than those with maternal optimal parenting. Paternal AC was not significantly related to any personality score. In females, the interaction between paternal rearing and maternal rearing was significant; the effect of maternal AC on HA scores was strongest when combined with paternal neglectful parenting. The present study suggests that the AC type parenting by mothers is associated with specific personality traits, especially high HA, in healthy subjects.

Abstract
There have been several studies suggesting that sex hormones are involved in characterization of human mental function and behaviour. Recently, it has been reported that the -34T/C polymorphism of cytochrome P450 17 (CYP17) gene affects sex hormone dispositions. Therefore, it is possible that the CYP17 -34T/C polymorphism affects personality traits. In the present study, the association of this genetic polymorphism with personality traits was examined in 595 healthy Japanese. Personality traits were assessed by the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), and the CYP17 -34T/C polymorphism was detected by a PCR-RFLP method. In males, the scores of novelty seeking, cooperativeness, and self-transcendence were higher in the group with the C allele than in that without this allele. In females, none of the seven TCI dimensions was different between the two genotype groups. The present study thus suggests that the -34T/C polymorphism of the CYP17 gene affects personality traits of healthy males, but not females, and this gender-dependent effect may be mediated by the action of sex hormones such as estradiol and testosterone.

Abstract
There have been several data suggesting that norepinephrine neurotransmission is involved in the characterization of personality traits. Recently, the -3081A/T polymorphism in the promoter region of the norepinephrine transporter (NET) gene affecting promoter activity has been reported. In the present study, we studied the association between this NET polymorphism and personality traits in 553 Japanese healthy subjects. Personality traits were assessed by the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), and the NET genotypes were identified by a PCR-RFLP method. Multivariate two-factor analysis of covariance with genotype and gender as factors and with age as a covariate showed no association between the NET genotypes and the TCI dimension scores. The present study thus suggests that the -3081A/T polymorphism in the NET gene promoter is not involved in the characterization of personality traits in healthy subjects.

Abstract
There have been some animal and human data suggesting that excitatory amino acid transporter (EAAT)-2, the major subtype of EAAT, is involved in human mental function and behavior. Recently, it has been shown that the -181 A/C polymorphism in the EAAT2 gene promoter affects plasma glutamate concentrations in humans. In the present study, the association of this genetic polymorphism with personality traits was examined in 575 Japanese healthy volunteers. Personality traits were assessed by the Temperament and Character Inventory, and the EAAT2 polymorphism was detected by a PCR-RFLP method. The scores of reward dependence were significantly (p=0.017) lower in the group with the A allele (A/A and A/C) than in that without this allele (C/C). When males and females were analyzed separately, the significant difference between the two genotype groups was observed in females (p=0.021) but not in males. The present study thus suggests that the -181 A/C polymorphism in the EAAT2 gene promoter affects the personality trait of reward dependence in healthy subjects.

Abstract
Influences of parental rearing on the personality traits of healthy subjects were studied in 323 Japanese volunteers. Perceived parental rearing was assessed with the use of the Parental Bonding Instrument, which consists of the factors of care and protection, whereas personality traits were assessed with the use of the Temperament and Character Inventory, which has 7 dimensions. In male subjects, all personality dimensions except for novelty seeking were influenced by parental rearing; in female subjects, only the harm avoidance (HA) and self-directedness (SD) dimensions were affected by parenting. Paternal rearing influenced 3 dimensions in male subjects and 1 dimension in female subjects, whereas maternal rearing influenced 5 dimensions in male subjects and 2 dimensions in female subjects. In male subjects, higher HA was related to higher paternal protection (P < .05), whereas in female subjects, it was related to higher maternal protection (P < .01). In male subjects, lower SD was related to higher paternal protection (P < .05) and lower maternal care (P < .01), whereas in female subjects, it was related to lower paternal care (P < .05) and higher maternal protection (P < .01). These results suggest that parental rearing influences the personality traits of healthy subjects, especially HA and SD, with sex specificity in parents and recipients.

AbstractCatechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) is one of the major enzymes for the degradation of catecholamines. It has been suggested that catecholaminergic neurotransmission is involved in characterization of personality. Previous studies on the association between the COMT Val158Met polymorphism and personality traits in healthy subjects have produced inconsistent results. Therefore, the relationship between this polymorphism and personality was re-examined in 478 Japanese healthy volunteers. Personality traits were assessed by the Temperament and Character inventory (TCI), and the COMT genotypes were determined by a PCR-RFLP method. in total, there were no significant differences among the Val/Val, Val/Met, and Met/Met genotypes in seven TCI dimension scores. Similarly, no significant relationship was found between the COMT genotypes and the TCI dimensions when males and females were analyzed separately. The present study thus suggests that the COMT Val158Met polymorphism is not associated with personality traits in Japanese healthy subjects.

Abstract
It has been suggested that the central serotonergic activity is implicated in personality traits. Tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) is the rate-limiting enzyme in serotonin synthesis. In the present study, the association between the TPH A218C polymorphism and personality traits assessed by the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) was examined in 345 Japanese healthy subjects. The TPH A218C polymorphism was determined by a PCR-RFLP method. There were no significant differences in the seven dimension scores of TCI among the A/A, A/C, and C/C genotype groups by the one-way ANOVA. There was a significant negative correlation between age and the NS scores. Females showed significantly higher scores of HA, RD, and ST, and significantly lower scores of SD than males. The multiple regression analysis using age, gender, and the TPH genotype as independent variables also showed no significant association between any dimension score and the genotype. The present study thus suggests that the TPH A218C polymorphism does not affect personality traits in Japanese healthy subjects.

Abstract
It has been suggested that personality traits are heritable. The polymorphic cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2C19 metabolizes sex hormones and 5-hydroxytryptamine, which are involved in multiple brain functions. In the present study, the relationship between the CYP2C19 polymorphism and personality traits was examined in 487 Japanese healthy volunteers. Personality traits were assessed by the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), and the two mutated alleles causing absent CYP2C19 activity were identified by a PCR-RFLP method. In females, the scores of reward dependence (p=0.026), cooperativeness (p=0.001), and self-transcendence (ST) (p=0.049) were significantly lower in poor metabolizers (PMs) than in extensive metabolizers (EMs). In males, none of the seven TCI dimensions was significantly different between EMs and PMs. The present study thus suggests that the CYP2C19 polymorphism affects personality traits of Japanese females.

Abstract
To treat intractable deafferentation pains, we prefer stimulation of the primary motor cortex (M1). The methods of stimulation we utilize are electrical stimulation and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). In our department, we first attempt rTMS, and if this rTMS is effective, we recommend the patient to undergo procedures for motor cortex stimulation (MCS). A 90% intensity of resting motor threshold setting is used for rTMS treatment. In this study ten trains of 5 Hz rTMS for 10 seconds (50 seconds resting interval) were applied to the M1, S1, pre-motor and supplementary motor areas. Only M1 stimulation was effective for pain reduction in 10 of 20 patients (50%). Twenty-nine MCS procedures were performed by subdural implantation of electrodes, and in the case of hand or face pain, electrodes were implanted within the central sulcus (11 cases), because the main part of M1 is located in the central sulcus in humans. The success rate of MCS was around 63%, and seemed to be higher in cases of pain with spinal cord and peripheral origins, while it was lower in cases of post-stroke pain.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We have tried to approach the aqueduct less invasively with the endoscope in combination with a small suboccipital craniectomy, especially for lesions of the aqueduct close to the fourth ventricle. METHODS The patient is placed in the prone position and a small suboccipital craniectomy is performed. After elevating the bilateral tonsils with retractors, the sheath of the endoscope is inserted from a small skin incision made on the posterior midline of the neck, far from the craniectomy site. The skin incision for endoscopic insertion is planned on the linear extension connecting the aqueduct and the foramen of Magendi on the craniocervical MRI. A rigid endoscope is inserted through the fourth ventricle to the aqueduct for exploration and surgical manipulation. RESULTS Two cases with hydrocephalus due to aqueductal stenosis, with gait disturbance were operated. After exploration of the aqueduct via the fourth ventricle, endoscopic aqueductal plasty was performed. The postoperative courses were uneventful. The patients' symptoms disappeared. CONCLUSIONS This approach can be applied for less invasive endoscopic exploration and surgery around the aqueduct close to the fourth ventricle with a rigid endoscope, without overflexion of the neck, or a large craniectomy, or overretraction of the tonsils, or incision of the inferior vermis.

Abstract
A 77-year-old female showed delusion of infestation in the oral cavity. She was treated by paroxetine 20 mg/day, and the hypochondriacal delusion disappeared after 8 weeks. Hypoperfusion in the left temporal and parietal lobes which was observed when she had the delusion was normalized after resolution of the delusion. This report suggests that paroxetine may be effective for delusional disorder, somatic type. It also supports the previous views that this disorder is associated with serotonergic dysfunction and hypoperfusion in the temporal and parietal lobes.

Abstract
We have developed a simple method for reconstructing a three-dimensional (3D) image in the operating room from sequentially scanned intraoperative two-dimensional (2D) power Doppler images using a personal computer and commercially available software. During three operations, 2 for cerebral aneurysm and 1 for cerebral tumor, intracranial vessel images were digitally transferred to a personal computer by freehand scanning over the dura mater or surface of the brain with a 7.5-MHz linear probe. A series of 2D images were converted to a smaller file, and 3D image was reconstructed with volume-rendering software. It took about 15 minutes to reconstruct of the initial 3D image. In the cases of cerebral aneurysm, the vessels connected to the lesion or running nearby were easily identified on the image. In the tumor case, the anatomical relation between the vascular structures and the tumor was clear. This simple 3D reconstruction method provides spatial information about intracranial vascular structures that is useful in intraoperative surgical planning.

Abstract
An unruptured internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysm arising at the origin of a hyperplastic anomalous AchoA was identified together with a second unruptured middle cerebral artery aneurysm during angiography performed to investigate a striatal and intraventricular haemorrhage in a 55-years-old woman. The anomalous hyperplastic AchoA supplied the left temporal and occipital lobes, and the aneurysm arose proximal to its origin. The patient underwent clipping of the aneurysms, and intra-operative observation revealed that several perforating branches arose directly from the ICA between the AchoA and the ICA bifurcation.

Abstract
Despite recent advances in diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is still a serious condition associated with high mortality and morbidity. There are no effective treatments other than surgical intervention. However, another option for decreasing the occurrence of SAH may be prevention of aneurysms formation and of their rupture by controlling risk factors. Cigarette smoking has been recently shown to be one of the major risk factors for SAH. We investigated whether cigarette smoking increased the risk of developing cerebral aneurysms and of SAH. Degree of smoking was investigated in 182 patients with SAH and in 123 patients with an unruptured cerebral aneurysm incidentally detected during investigation of other diseases. Sixty-nine patients with other diseases who were shown to be free of cerebral aneurysms through MR angiography served as controls. Smoking significantly increased the risk of both aneurysm formation and SAH; The odds ratio for SAH was 2.4, and for unruptured cerebral aneurysm 1.7. Smoking especially increased the occurrence of SAH in women and in youngsters. However, smoking did not influence the occurrence of cerebral vasospasm and multiplicity of aneurysms. These data suggest the importance of avoiding smoking to prevent the occurrence of cerebral aneurysms and of SAH.

Abstract
A large epidural abscess secondary to frontal sinusitis in a previously healthy 19-year-old man was successfully treated with a small eyebrow incision using combined transfrontal and endonasal endoscopic technique. The abscess was resolved with concomitant pneumatization of the paranasal sinuses. The present case illustrates the promising use of endoscopy in the merging fields of neurosurgery and otorhinolaryngology.
