Mother's milk-mother's gift: Mobile-based training to increase self-efficacy of nursing women during postpartum and puerperium: A quasi-experimental study

BACKGROUND

The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months followed by continued breastfeeding with complementary food up to 2 years of age or beyond. This study aimed to investigate the effect of mobile -based education on the self-efficacy of lactating women in the postpartum period.

METHODS

A quasi-experimental study was carried out in 2018 in Shirvan, Iran among 69 postpartum women. Participants were assigned to intervention (n = 33) and control (n = 36) groups on the first day after delivery by random allocation. Intervention group received the mobile-based training for 4 weeks in the form of text messages, photos, video clips, and audio files. The control group received routine hospital care and training. Data were collected on demographic characteristics, delivery information, and the breastfeeding self-efficacy. Self-efficacy was measured in two groups at three time points; the first day after delivery, 4 weeks after delivery and 8 weeks after delivery.

FINDINGS

The mean and standard deviation of breastfeeding self-efficacy score was higher in the intervention than control group 4 weeks (155.30 ± 10.93 vs 132.52 ± 19.70, P < 0.001) and 8 weeks after delivery (160.18 ± 11.33 vs 132.30 ± 24.09, P < 0.001). Compared to the control group, the rate of exclusive breastfeeding in the intervention group was significantly higher 4 and 8 weeks after the delivery (Pall < 0.05).

DISCUSSION

The findings from this study showed a substantial increase in breastfeeding self-efficacy and exclusive breastfeeding in the group who received training through mobile-based education compared to the group that received routine care.

APPLICATION TO PRACTICE

Mobile-based breastfeeding education might be a promising strategy to increase breastfeeding self-efficacy. It is suggested that midwives include the design of mobile-based educational programs as part of their educational strategies and use the advantages of this educational method during pregnancy and after childbirth.

The effectiveness of a theory -based health education program on waterpipe smoking cessation in Iran: one year follow-up of a quasi-experimental research

BACKGROUND

The present research aimed to determine the effect of an educational intervention based on the extended theory of planned behavior (ETPB) on waterpipe (WT) smoking cessation in women.

METHODS

The present quasi-experimental had a pre-test, post-test design with 3, 6 and 12 months follow-ups was conducted in Bandar Abbas city, south of Iran in December 2021-March 2023. A total of 448 women over the age of 15 (224 in the intervention group (IG), 224 in the control group (CG)), using a two-stage cluster sampling method participated. The educational intervention focused on WT smoking cessation implemented in 14 sessions. The educational methods in the training sessions were lectures, collaborative discussions, Q&As, brainstorming, role plays, and peer education. The main outcome was WT cessation behavior. Repeated measures ANOVA tests and post hoc were run to compare the IG and CG at baseline in terms of demographic variables, t-test and chi square test, and in the four points of time of data collection. The data were analyzed in Stata14. A p-value < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant.

RESULTS

The mean and standard deviation of WT cessation behavior and all ETPB constructs in the IG was significantly higher than the CG. After the educational intervention, in the IG, the perceived behavioral control, attitude, subjective norm, intention and knowledge increased, and the weekly smoking and WT smoking habit decreased (P < 0.001). The CG did not have any significant change in other variables except for the increased knowledge score. During the 12-month follow-up, the cessation rate was 43.81% (P = 0.645) in the IG and 7.45% in the CG (P = 0.081).

CONCLUSIONS

The educational intervention positively affected WT smoking reduction and cessation in women through influencing the ETPB constructs. It is strongly recommended to design theory-based interventions beyond the individual level with an emphasis on interpersonal relationships to facilitate WT cessation as far as possible.

Psychometric properties of Persian version of the infertile women's exposure to violence determination scale (IWEVDS)

To identify violence among infertile women, a specific tool is needed. "Infertile Women's Exposure to Violence Determination Scale" (IWEVDS) is the only specific tool to assess violence against infertile women. The aim of this study was to determine psychometric properties of the Persian version of the IWEVDS. In this methodological study, content validity of the scale was determined following backward, forward translation. To assess the construct validity, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used through Partial Least Squares (PLS). To do so, the Persian version of the IWEVDS was administered to a continuous sample of 310 infertile women referred to a women's hospital in Tehran. The results of the CFA confirmed the model and demonstrated a good fit on the scale. The Goodness of Fit (GOF) index and the Standardised Root Mean Residual (SRMR) with values of 0.42 and 0.056, respectively, indicate the adequacy of the overall model. The reliability of the scale is confirmed by the acceptable values of Cronbach's alpha, composite reliability, communality coefficient and Spearman correlation coefficient. The values of Cronbach's alpha were 0.90 for domains domestic violence, 0.85 for social pressure, 0.86 for punishment, 0.7 for exposure to traditional practices, and 0.87 for exclusion. The results of the study revealed that the Persian version of the IWEVDS is a 28-item scale with good validity and reliability among Iranian infertile women. Therefore, healthcare professionals can use it to evaluate the infertile women's exposure to violence.

Predictive factors of anxiety and depression in COVID-19 survivors: A cross-sectional study

Background

Depression and anxiety are among the most critically recognized psychological complication of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Aim

This study aimed to examine the two predictors among COVID-19 survivors in Ahvaz, Iran, in 2022.

Methodology

Using a descriptive-analytical design, 347 COVID-19 survivors referred to hospitals in Ahvaz were meticulously examined. The database of the COVID-19 registration system contained primary information about the samples. For data collection, questionnaires, including the Beck Anxiety and Depression Inventory and a demographic questionnaire, were utilized.

Results

The results revealed a significant relationship between anxiety score and family size (p = 0.019), education level (p < 0.001), occupation (p = 0.015), household income status (p = 0.017), disease history (p = 0.017), ethnicity (p < 0.001), disease severity (p < 0.001), and quarantine period (p < 0.001). Furthermore, a significant correlation was observed between the average depression score and gender (p = 0.023), number of family households (p = 0.009), level of education (p < 0.001), occupation (p < 0.001), household income (p < 0.001), disease severity (p < 0.001), disease history (p < 0.001), and quarantine period (p < 0.001). Moreover, linear regression analysis indicated only a significant relationship between depression scores and the quarantine period variable (p < 0.001), among others. The simultaneous examination of all variables on depression disorder highlighted a meaningful relationship between depression score and disease history (p = 0.013), occupation (p = 0.002), household income status (p = 0.002), and family size (p = 0.039).

Conclusions

This study revealed a significant relationship between certain demographic variables, such as quarantine period, disease history, employment status, household income status, and the number of family households, and an increase in the average depression and anxiety score.

Comparison of maternal outcomes in caring by Doula, trained lay companion and routine midwifery care

INTRODUCTION

The aim of this study was to compare maternal and neonatal outcomes in the care provided by Doula, trained lay companion, and routine midwifery care in the labor and obstetric units. In this study, only results related to maternal outcomes were presented.

METHOD

This is a quasi-experimental study, which was conducted on 150 women with low-risk pregnancies who had been selected for vaginal birth at private clinics and public hospitals of Arak, Iran. Participants were divided into three groups, two intervention groups, doula and trained lay companion, and one control group, midwife's routine care. The intervention groups, in addition to receiving routine care from the labor and maternity units, also received support and training by doula or a trained lay companion, but 50 the control group received only routine midwifery care. In the control group and the trained companion, the samples were taken from 10 clinics of different parts of the city by random sampling method using the SIB center system. Then, among selected numbers, we randomly selected samples for each group. But in Doula group, because of limited number of samples, convenience sampling was used and all women enrolled in doula care were included in the study until the number reached 50. In each group, outcomes such as the duration of active phase and second stage of labor, as well as the severity of pain, anxiety and maternal satisfaction with birth were measured and compared with other groups. Data were collected by a researcher-made checklist, the Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), the Pain Visual Assessment Scale (VAS), and the Hollins Martin's Birth Satisfaction Scale-Revised (BSS-R). Data were analyzed by SPSS-22 statistical software using Kruskal Wallis, Chi-Square, ANOVA and Fisher's exact tests.

FINDINGS

Based on the results, the mean duration of active phase between three groups was 234.68 ± 118.74, 256.66 ± 108.75 and 279 ± 94.37 min, respectively (p = 0.022). Also, the mean duration of second stage in three groups was 10 ± 5.61, 10.35 ± 5.1 and 22.30 ± 75.57 min, respectively (p < 0.001). The difference between mean pain scores in the first, second, third, fourth and fifth hours was not statistically significant. The average difference in anxiety score in the two stages of labor was higher in the lay companion group, and this difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001); however, the level of satisfaction in doula group was higher compared to the lay companion and control groups (p < 0.00 1).

CONCLUSION

According to present study, doula care has a greater effect on reducing the duration of labor than other care models. Based on the study, there was no statistically significant difference between the three groups in terms of variables such as the severity of labor pain. However, the level of anxiety of pregnant mothers in the group supported by lay companion was lower than the other two groups, which indicates the positive effect of mothers' training on increasing maternal comfort and satisfaction. It is suggested that further research investigate the severity of labor pain in groups supported by different care models and also we recommend the use of lay companion' support during childbearing of mothers who could not afford doula.

Improving milk donation behavior through an educational intervention based on the theory of planned behavior: study protocol of a cluster randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Breastfeeding mothers' decisions to donate their milk is influenced by their knowledge, attitudes, and subjective norms such as their family's opinions on milk donation. In Iran, women have favorable knowledge and positive attitudes toward breastfeeding, but they lack sufficient information and education about milk banks. With respect to current childbearing policies, an increase in the number of infants who will be admitted to neonatal intensive care units is expected. Accordingly, improving milk donation behavior, which requires mothers' intention and ability to donate breast milk, is important for infants' survival and well-being. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate whether an educational program based on the theory of planned behavior affects breastfeeding mothers' decisions to donate their breast milk.

METHODS

This cluster randomized controlled trial will be conducted in health centers affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences and will enroll 66 breastfeeding mothers (intervention, n = 33; control, n = 33). After collecting baseline data, the intervention group will begin receiving a 60-minute weekly educational program based on Theory of Planned Behavior components for four weeks. The first follow-up assessment will be conducted immediately after the intervention, and the final one will be conducted 12 weeks later. The primary outcomes are the number of mothers who have donated their breast milk and changes in breastfeeding mothers' knowledge, attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control about donor human milk and intention to donate milk.

DISCUSSION

This trial will evaluate if a well-designed educational program can improve breastfeeding mothers' knowledge and promote their behavioral factors regarding milk donation and lead to a significant increase in the number of potential milk donors.

Comparison of associated factors of domestic violence against women by their husbands based on demographic characteristics and life skills in Iran

BACKGROUND

In recent decades, the prevention of domestic violence against women (DVAW) has been considered a priority for women's health in many countries. Identifying factors related to DVAW by their husbands or intimate partner can promise prevention and decrease in prevalence. The objective of this study was to examine and compare associated factors of domestic violence based on demographic characteristics and some life skills.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This cross-sectional study was conducted in Abadan, Iran. 640 couples completed questionnaires including demographic characteristics, communication skills, anger management, and problem-solving skill. In addition, women completed the questionnaire on domestic violence. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (t-test and one-way analysis of variance) and multiple linear regression.

RESULTS

Approximately 57% of the women in this study have been subjected to psychological violence in their lifetime by their husbands. The result of multiple regression indicated that demographic characteristics had a very small contribution to explaining domestic violence (R ²= 0.03) and only the education level of women was identified as a key predictor of domestic violence. The result of multiple regression based on life skills among couples demonstrated that communication skills and anger management of couples were inversely and significantly associated with domestic violence and these variables explained 51% of the variance in domestic violence.

CONCLUSIONS

Empowering couples with anger management and communication skills can play an important role in decreasing domestic violence. Therefore, developing and planning educational interventions by policymakers and health care providers seems necessary for couples.

COVID-19 and hookah smoking cessation among women in Southern Iran: A cross-sectional study

Hookah smoking does not only transmit COVID-19 but also intensifies the symptoms of the disease. Thus, the present research aimed to explore the association between COVID-19 and hookah cessation among female smokers. The institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted nine months after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Face-to-face interviews were held between November 2020 and January 2021 to explore the pattern of hookah smoking among 561 female hookah smokers in Bandar Abbas in the south of Iran. The daily, weekly and monthly rates of hookah smoking showed a statistically significant decrease in the during COVID-19 era (p < .001). Thirteen percent of women managed to cease hookah smoking successfully during the pandemic. The odds ratio of hookah cessation was higher in single women (95% CI 1.09-5.23) as well as women with a high socioeconomic status (SES) (95% CI 4.28-24.01). It was also higher among women who initiated hookah smoking at an older age (95% CI 29-68) and among those with no hookah smoking family member (95% CI 301- 943). Fear of COVID-19 infection was the leading factor involved in hookah cessation or reduction. Entertainment was the leading barrier to successful hookah cessation behavior. It is believed that COVID-19 has directly and indirectly contributed to the reduced or ceased hookah smoking behavior. One of the reasons for the reduction of hookah smoking was the fear of aggravated symptoms and reasons for cessation included closure of coffee shops and removal of all hookahs from the city.

The effect of educational intervention on nutritional behavior in pregnant women based on social cognitive theory

BACKGROUND

One of the key issues for women's health is pregnancy. Healthy nutrition during pregnancy is a reliable guarantee for proper pregnancy and childbirth. This study sought to determine the impact of an educational intervention based on social cognitive theory on the nutritional behavior of pregnant women in Iran.

METHODS

This randomized controlled trial study was carried out in women of reproductive age in Iran, from February to April 2020. The samples were divided into experimental (n = 150) and control (n = 150) groups. The questionnaire included demographic questions, questions related to the structures of social cognitive theory and nutritional behavior questionnaire. The data were analyzed through the SPSS20 and AMOS23 software.

RESULTS

The mean age of the women was 28.11 ± 6.54 and 28.83 ± 6.62 years in the intervention and control groups, respectively. The results of the Structural Equation Model showed that direct effect of self-efficacy, self-regulation, and mutual determinants on behavior were significant. After the educational intervention, nutritional behavior in the experimental group was increased significantly. Also, there was a significant difference between two groups in structures such as outcome expectations, outcome value, self-efficacy and knowledge. But there was no significant increase in the self-regulation and social support after educational intervention.

CONCLUSION

Social cognitive theory as a theoretical framework is able to predict healthy eating behavior during pregnancy. Also educational intervention based on the structures of social cognitive theory, improved the behavior of pregnant mothers. Educational intervention based on social cognitive theory and providing simple and understandable training packages for pregnant women is recommended.

Psychometric Properties of a New Questionnaire Assessing the Mothers’ Knowledge and Perception About the Oral Health of Their School Children

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of an instrument in Persian to assess the mothers’ knowledge, and perception about oral health of school children.

Materials and Methods: A sequential exploratory mixed method design consisting of qualitative and quantitative phases was performed. We developed the questionnaire by inductive-deductive method, through a synthesis of literature review and a qualitative study with semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions. Face and content validity of the items were assessed by consulting a panel of 11 experts. In the quantitative phase, an exploratory factor analysis was performed using data from a cross-sectional study with a sample of 303 mothers. Reliability analysis with test-retest approach and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient and intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) was done.

Results: Pre-final version of the scale consisted of 120 items extracted from the qualitative study and literature review. After content and face validity, 92 items were chosen with the greatest agreement between experts, with a content validity index (CVI) >0.8 and content validity ratio (CVR) of 0.59. The final questionnaire covered 62 items. The overall Cronbach’s alpha was 0.94 and it ranged from 0.87 to 0.97 for the subscales. The ICC ranged from 0.91 to 0.98 (Cronbach's alpha ≥0.70).

Conclusion: The present study introduced a valid and reliable questionnaire for assessment of the mothers’ perception regarding school children’s oral health. It can be used as a standardized measure for public health surveillance and evaluation of oral health promotion programs.

A qualitative exploration of the factors associated with initiation to methamphetamine use in Iran

Background

Crystal (methamphetamine) is a strong stimulant of addictive substances that affects the central nervous system. The consumption of this substance is increasing among teenagers and adult young people in the country. In this matter, one of the practical and important ways to its control is to identify the factors leading to its first use. Thus this paper, explores the factors related to the first crystal use in Golestan province, Iran.

Methods

In a qualitative study, 19 crystal users were recruited in the study conducted in Golestan province by snowball sampling from DIC (Drop-In Center) in addiction treatment centers. The interviews were mostly carried out individually with the participants; only one interview was conducted in an addiction treatment camp in the form of a group-focused discussion. Data analysis was implemented through content analysis in MAXQDA 10 software.

Results

The mean age of the participants was 35.05 ± 6.06 years with a range of 23–46 years. Meanwhile, the mean of crystal use period was 7.42 (SD: 3.61) and a range of 1–14 years. Based on the obtained data, the reasons for first crystal use could be categorized in six; 1: “crystal use to other drugs rehabilitation”; 2: “Lack of awareness of the addictive nature of crystal”; 3: “stimulating curiosity in public with crystal-use friends”, 4: affordable and convenient use”, 5: “anti-sleeping effects and increasing work efficiency”, and 6: “therapeutic and other misconceptions”“.

Conclusions

The results indicated that crystal is mostly abused to opium rehabilitation. The lack of awareness and misconceptions about this substance can lead people to crystal use. Therefore, designing public health interventions to increase awareness about negative consequences of crystal use is fundamental to prevent people from abusing it. We suggest designing public health program to promote awareness about health risks of crystal and modifying related misconceptions. Finally, the government can establish policies to mandate sale tax for crystal producers and reduce easy access to crystal especially among youth.

Prevalence and Type Distribution of Human Papillomavirus Recovered from the Uterine Cervix of Nigerian Women: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background:

Infection with an oncogenic type of human papillomavirus is a prerequisite for the development of precancerous cervical lesions and its subsequent progression to cervical cancer. With an alarming increase in the detection of other suspicious papillomavirus genotypes in both healthy and women with cervical lesions, there is a need for comprehensive data on cervical papillomavirus infection to address cervical cancer and other associated disease burden, especially in Sub-Sarahan Africa, where the bulk of the problem exists. The present study was conducted to develop comprehensive data on the prevalence and circulating genotypes of human papillomavirus in various risk categories in Nigeria.

Methods:

A systematic review and meta-analysis of peer-reviewed publications on cervical papillomavirus infection were performed. Relevant data were extracted from eligible studies published in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and Google Scholar, from inception to July 31, 2019. The random-effect model was used to estimate the pooled prevalence. We identified 327 potential studies and pooled data from 18, involving 5697 women aged 15-86 years.

Results:

The overall pooled prevalence of cervical papillomavirus infection was 42% (95%CI: 30-54%) in the general population and 37% (95%CI: 25-50%) among women living with HIV/AIDs, with the predominance of genotypes 16, 18, 31, 35, 52, 58 and 45. The highest prevalence was observed in teenagers and young adults and the second peak in women 50 years and above.

Conclusion:

The prevalence of cervical human papillomavirus infection is cumulatively high in Nigeria and HIV is a strong co-factor. We, therefore, strongly recommend the co-screening of human papillomavirus and cervical cancer and integration of the intervention strategy into the existing HIV-care guideline in Nigeria.

Prevalence, related factors and maternal outcomes of primary postpartum haemorrhage in governmental hospitals in Kabul-Afghanistan

BACKGROUND

To determine the prevalence, related factors and maternal outcomes of primary PPH in governmental hospitals in Kabul Afghanistan.

METHODS

An observational study was designed to determine the prevalence, related factors and maternal outcomes of primary PPH in governmental hospitals in Kabul-Afghanistan. The population of this study consisted of all women who gave birth to a child between August and October 2018. The structured checklist was used to collect the data from patients who were suffering from primary PPH.

RESULTS

Among the 8652 women who were observed, 215 (2.5%) of them suffered from primary PPH and 2 (0.9%) of them died under caesarean section. The most common related factors of primary PPH were uterine atonia (65.6%), previous PPH (34.9%), prolonged labor (27%), genital tract trauma (26.5%), and induction of labor (20.5%). The most common maternal outcomes of primary PPH were respiratory failure (7%), hysterectomy (6%), and hypovolaemic shock (5.1%).

CONCLUSIONS

According to our findings, the major cause of postpartum bleeding was uterine atonia. Therefore, postpartum care of women is essential, especially for those with previous PPH and prolonged labor that require more attention.

Care of newborns born to mothers with COVID-19 infection; a review of existing evidence

Background: The novel Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is already wreaking havoc on families and communities' welfare. It is critical to discuss newborn care of infected mothers with COVID-19 based on the latest international guidelines and national guidelines of countries with the highest incidence of COVID-19 cases.Objective: We discuss how to care for a newborn of a suspected or infected mother with COVID-19 using existing evidence.Method: As of 16 April 2020, we reviewed articles and guidelines related to COVID-19 in the reproductive health field, mother, and newborn health. Our review yielded in 10 categories (i) the risk of diagnostic procedures in suspected mothers on fetus/infant health, (ii) the risk of intrauterine or postpartum transmission to the fetus/infant, (iii) appropriate method and delivery time in women with confirmed COVID-19, (iv) umbilical cord clamping and skin to skin contact, (v) clinical manifestations of infected infants, (vi) confirmation of infection in a suspected neonate/infant, (vii) instructions for infant's care and how to feed her/him, (viii) bathing the baby, (ix) the criteria of discharging baby from the hospital, (x) the impact of isolation on the maternal mental health.Results: Our findings showed that the possibility of intrauterine or perinatal transmission of COVID-19 is still questionable and ambiguous. However, what has been agreed upon in the existing texts and guidelines is that the close contact of mother and infant after birth can transmit the virus to the baby through droplets or micro-droplets.Conclusions: Based on our findings, it is recommended to separate the baby from the mother with confirmed (or suspected) COVID-19 infection for at least 2 weeks. Since the motivation and stable situation of mothers allow breastfeeding during the isolation, infected mothers should be taught about breast expression skills, common breast problems, the symptoms of their baby's infection, and the principles of personal hygiene to protect the infant against COVID-19 infection.

A Qualitative Study of Factors Influencing the Onset of Hookah Smoking among Iranian Men with Turkmen Ethnicity

Introduction: Hookah smoking has grown considerably among Iranian Turkmen in the past two decades. The reasons for this increase in the consumption of hookah are unclear. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of determining the factors related to the start of hookah smoking in men with Turkmen ethnicity.

Methods: This qualitative study was conducted between February 2018 and June 2018 in Turkmen cities of Golestan provinces in Iran. The study participants included 26 male Turkmen water pipe smokers with various ages, occupation, and education level. Study data were collected through semi-structured individual interview and the results were analyzed in August 2018 by content analysis. Data management was done by software, MAXQDA version 10.

Results: In this study, 26 hookah smoker men with the age range of 20–45 years were interviewed. The age of the participants at the time of starting hookah consumption varied from 14 to 25 years. On the basis of qualitative data, the reasons for the start of hookah smoking in male Turkmen were classified into three main categories: (1) individual (curiosity and sense of adulthood, fewer perceived risks compared with other substances and hookah’s sensory attractions); (2) interpersonal (hookah-smoking friends and consumption of hookah by family members); and (3) societal (blaming unemployed people in small neighborhoods, cultural influence, more social acceptance compared with other substances, and easy access to hookah).

Conclusion: Individual, interpersonal, and societal factors play important role in the start of hookah smoking among male Turkmens. Developing health policies based on the above factors can be effective in adopting hookah prevention and control strategies. Moreover, future studies could be developed with the goal of discovering ways to solve the problem of unemployment and plan for developing recreational activities in this area to prevent initiation of hookah smoking especially among youth.

Domestic Violence and the CoVID-19 Crisis

This letter intends to discuss how the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and its related preventive measures, such as maintaining social distance and reducing social and intimate relationships can affect the formation of domestic violence. It also points to the need for families to provide psychological support in dealing with this epidemic.

Intention to quit water pipe smoking among Iranian women: a qualitative directed content analysis

Background

Water-pipe smoking is the most common type of tobacco used among Iranian women. The aim of this study was to explain women’s perceptions of their intention for quitting water-pipe smoking based on the theory of planned behavior.

Methods

The study was a qualitative content analysis which was carried out over 4 months in 2016 in Tehran-Iran. The participants were 26 women ages 18 to 45-years-old who smoked water-pipe and were selected through snowball sampling. The study was performed in hookah cafes, parks, and homes. The data were collected through individual interviews. The interviews were open-ended questions based on the theory of planned behavior. Directed content analysis was used to analyze the data.

Results

Findings showed that women did not intend to quit water-pipe in that time. Main contributing factors influencing not having intention of cessation were positive attitude and false beliefs toward hookah smoking, as well as having peers and family members who smoked water-pipe or approved its use. Although most females realized the obstacles associated with hookah cessation, they believed that quitting water-pipe smoking was up to them and could control more barriers.

Conclusion

Social pressure, positive attitude and false beliefs towards hookah smoking, as well as external and internal obstacles diminished women ‘s intention for cessation. Therefore, it is recommended to apply the theory of planned behavior into behavior change interventions in order to increase the intention to quit water-pipe smoking.

Persistent use of hookah smoking among Iranian women: A qualitative study

INTRODUCTION

Hookah smoking is the most common method of tobacco smoking among Iranian women and its rate has significantly increased over the past few decades. This study aimed to explore reasons behind persistent use of hookah smoking among Iranian women.

METHODS

This qualitative study was conducted from December 2014 to March 2016. Participants were 38 Iranian women living in Tehran, the capital of Iran. They were hookah smokers at the time of this study or at least had a history of its use. Data were collected using semi-structured face-to-face interviews and were analyzed using the qualitative content analysis method.

RESULTS

The main factors for persistent use of hookah smoking from the perspective of women were entertainment, a pretext to gather with old friends and family members, and a method for the creation of social networks. Hookah smoking has been described as entertainment and fun.

CONCLUSIONS

Strategies aimed to curb the social issue of hookah smoking by women need to focus on the provision of appropriate entertainment methods with the consideration of advantages, such as gathering with friends and family members and consolidating relationships.

Factors contributing to nass consumption among Iranian Turkmen: A qualitative study

INTRODUCTION

Nass is a smokeless tobacco product. Iranian Turkmen have a long history of nass consumption. However, the factors contributing to nass consumption among Iranian Turkmen are not known. The purpose of the present study is to examine the factors contributing to nass consumption among Iranian Turkmen.

METHODS

This qualitative study was conducted between January and March 2016 in four Turkmen cities of Golestan province in Iran. Participants included 34 male Turkmen nass consumers. Data were collected through individual and group interviews and were analyzed by content analysis. Data management was done by qualitative data analysis software MAXQDA, Version 10.

RESULTS

The results of data analysis revealed the following as the main reasons for nass consumption by the study population: 1) cultural, social, and environmental facilitators, 2) nass was considered as an alternative to cigarette smoking, 3) nass was believed to intensify the effects of opium and other drugs, 4) specific occupations and circumstances, and 5) beliefs related to nass.

CONCLUSIONS

Cultural and historical backgrounds, convenient access to nass at a very low price, curiosity, emulation, and peer pressure were the main factors driving nass consumption among Iranian Turkmen. Various beliefs, such as the idea that nass intensifies the effects of opium and alcohol, calms the nerves, and helps individuals quit smoking were also found to contribute to this phenomenon. Finally, individuals in certain lines of work, such as fishing, driving combines, and military service, were more likely to consume nass.

Perception of Iranian Mothers About Oral Health of Their School-Children: A Qualitative Study

OBJECTIVES

Oral health is an important aspect of general health and well-being for children. Understanding the viewpoint of mothers about children's oral health provides a basis for the development of interventions to improve oral care and disease prevention. The purpose of this study was to explore the perception of Iranian mothers regarding the oral health of their children.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This descriptive qualitative study was the first phase of an exploratory mixed method design and collected data from April to May 2015 in Tehran, Iran. The qualitative data were collected through seven focus group discussions and three semi-structured interviews. The participants were 58 Iranian women who had a first grader. Data were analyzed using conventional content analysis.

RESULTS

The main themes identified from the data were: (I) the definition of oral health, (II) the importance of maintaining oral health and dental treatment, (III) the effect of nutrition on children's oral health, (IV) the role of oral health behaviors, (V) the causes of dental caries and malocclusion/crowding, (VI) the symptoms and causes of gum disease, (VII) the causes of halitosis.

CONCLUSIONS

According to the mothers' perception, the main factors influencing children's oral health were: nutrition and oral health behaviors such as daily tooth brushing and flossing. The results of this study can be used to develop a model of oral health education and a prevention program for improving oral health among Iranian school-children.

Health Promoting Lifestyle and its Determinants Among University Students in Sabzevar, Iran

Background:

Healthy lifestyle is a major strategy to promote current and subsequent health status. The aim of this study was to assess the status of health-promoting the lifestyle and its determinants among students.

Methods:

A stratified random sample of 500 students in a university in the city of Sabzevar, Iran participated in this cross-sectional study. Health-promoting lifestyle was measured using Walker's health-promoting lifestyle profile II.

Results:

There was a significant correlation between all domains of health-promoting the lifestyle. The highest score among the domains was for an interpersonal relationship (70.8%), and the lowest score was for nutrition (53.6%), and physical activity (53.4%). Significant differences were found in physical activity by gender (P ≤ 0.05). There were significant differences in health responsibility, spiritual growth and body mass index by marital status (P < 0.01).

Conclusions:

Since one out of five students in this study were overweight/obese, health program planning to promote lifestyle, especially physical activity and nutrition among students is recommended. Our findings may be helpful for faculty administrators, curriculum planners, and health educators in designing guidelines to structuralize a healthier campus and to develop health promotion programs supporting healthy choices among students.

Psycho-social Needs Impact on Hookah Smoking Initiation among Women: A Qualitative Study from Iran

Background:

In Iranian women, the use of hookah is the most common method of tobacco smoking. This study aimed to find the role of psycho-social needs and gaps as a possible risk factor for hookah smoking initiation in women.

Methods:

This qualitative study was conducted during 2012–2013 in Tehran, Iran. Thirty-six women participated in the study. They were current or former users of hookah. Data were collected through in-depth individual interviews and was analyzed through content analysis.

Results:

Four main categories were identified from the data. This study focused on the category: Psycho-social needs and gaps. This category has five sub-categories which explain why women begin to smoke hookah including curiosity; desire for non-feminine, forbidden, and negative activities; need for amusement and recreation; for others: To show off; attract attention; satisfy and join others and protection.

Conclusions:

From this study, a variety of factors which contribute to the initiation of hookah smoking among women have been identified. Keeping young girls and women away from seemingly happy gatherings of hookah smokers; Providing appropriate recreational facilities for young women and training families on how to help their children in the event of a crisis-like intention to take up smoking behavior, can be some effective ways for reducing hookah smoking initiation among women.

The Role of Family on Hookah Smoking Initiation in Women: A Qualitative Study

Hookah smoking has recently emerged as a popular alternative to cigarette smoking particularly among young adults and women. This study focused on the role of family members' smoking behaviours as a possible risk factor for initiation of hookah smoking in women. 36 in-depth interviews were conducted with Iranian women of diverse ages for understanding the factors contributing to the initiation of hookah smoking. Four main themes were identified from the data. This study focused on the role of family as a facilitator for hookah smoking initiation. The results of this study indicate that the entry of hookah into homes can be effective in the spread of hookah smoking among adult and young women, in three ways: Girls' participation in the preparation of hookah and the frequent observation of people who smoke hookah at home can be effective in hookah smoking initiation among young girls; the husband of a young woman has an important role in the initiation of smoking hookah; when parents invite children to smoke hookah at home, in order to protect them against public censure, the mother (a middle aged woman) may intend to start smoking hookah. Therefore, tobacco use prevention interventions should be focused on targeting the family as well.
