FDG PET/CT in Metastatic Spindle Cell Sarcoma of Penile Origin: A Rare Malignancy

ABSTRACT

Spindle cell sarcoma is a connective tissue tumor usually involving bone or muscle. Penis is an unusual and very rare site for the primary involvement of the tumor, especially mesenchymal tumor. We here present a case of a 27-year-old man diagnosed with spindle cell sarcoma of penile origin in which FDG PET/CT was done as part of workup.

Carbon monoxide poisoning: an unusual cause of acute renal failure

Carbon monoxide poisoning in a family of 3 persons resulted in renal failure with neurological damage in a 40-year-old husband and a fatal neurological injury in 35-year-old wife whereas the newborn child survived without any ill effects. Rhabdomyolysis and myoglobinuria secondary to anoxia was the probable cause of acute renal failure. The recognition of nontraumatic rhabdomyolysis-related acute renal failure is important in preventing fatality if neurological salvage is done at the right time.

Haemopoietic stem cells during development of mouse embryo

Haemopoiesis in mammals takes place in yolk-sac and in mouse it can be detected on the 7th day of gestation. Erythropoietin (EPO) responsive cells can be detected from 7th day onwards. However, the cells committed to the myeloid lineage which can respond to the haemopoietic growth factor (viz. granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor; GM-CSF) can be demonstrated only on 10th day of gestation. At the same time, the 12-day spleen colony forming cells i.e. the late colony forming unit spleen (CFU-s) which are multipotent stem cells can also be detected. Data suggest that the stem cells seen in the embryo from 7-10 days of gestation may be a primitive population confined only to the yolk-sac. Liver haemopoiesis which begins in the liver of 13-day embryos is due to primitive haemopoietic pluripotent stem cells, arising de novo in the embryo and not in the yolk-sac, since no primitive pluripotent stem cells capable of repopulating lethally irradiated bone-marrow can be detected in the yolk-sac.

Demonstration of a haemopoietic pluripotent stem cell adhesion molecule (HPSC-CAM) in mouse bone marrow

In this paper the probable mechanism of the haemopoietic pluripotent stem cell (PSC) homing into the bone-marrow is investigated. Experiments were done to understand the role of fibronectin hexapeptide and ubiquitin. Attempts to isolate the PSC adherence molecule were made. A new adherence assay for PSC has been described.

An unusual presentation of gonococcal arthritis in an HIV positive patient

A 27 year old, HIV positive, homosexual man was admitted for evaluation and treatment of acute oligoarticular arthritis. Gonococcal arthritis was found in a single hip and a single sternoclavicular joint, which is an unusual distribution for this bacterial pathogen.
