Abstract
BACKGROUND Information on the incidence and risk factors of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in neurodegenerative diseases is limited. We aimed to determine the incidence of DVT among neurodegenerative disorders (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ALS], Parkinson's disease [PD], multiple system atrophy [MSA], and progressive supranuclear palsy [PSP]-corticobasal syndrome [CBS]) and the risk factors for the development of DVT. METHODS Overall, 229 hospitalized patients with neurodegenerative diseases (65 patients with ALS, 61 with PD, 53 with MSA, and 50 with PSP-CBS) were included in this study. D-dimer value and ultrasonography of the leg vein were assessed to determine the presence or absence of leg DVT. We compared the DVT incidence among each disease group. To identify the risk factors for DVT, a multivariate analysis was performed. RESULTS Of 229 patients, 34 had leg DVT; the incidence was significantly higher in patients with PD (38%) than in those with ALS (2%), MSA (5%), or PSP-CBS (4%). Patients with DVT were older, had a smaller waist circumference, had a longer disease duration, and had a high blood pressure (BP) variability. Multivariate analysis revealed that a PD diagnosis and female sex, with a high BP variability were predictive of leg DVT. CONCLUSIONS Among the neurodegenerative diseases, the DVT incidence was markedly higher in PD than in ALS, MSA, and PSP-CBS. Several risk factors have been identified in patients with leg DVT. Recognition of these risk factors will improve patient care and guide the appropriate use of anticoagulants.

Neuropathological features of levodopa-responsive parkinsonism in multiple system atrophy: an autopsy case report and comparative neuropathological study. Front Neurol 2023; 14:1293732. Abstract
Background In typical patients with multiple system atrophy with predominant parkinsonism (MSA-P) levodopa is ineffective. However, there are some of these patients who respond well to levodopa treatment. Levodopa efficacy in MSA-P patients is thought to be related to the degree of putaminal damage, but the pathological causation between the putaminal involvement and levodopa efficacy has not been established in detail. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the neuropathological features of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic system in a "levodopa-responsive" MSA-P patient in comparison with "levodopa-unresponsive" conventional MSA-P patients. Materials and methods Clinicopathological findings were assessed in a 53-year-old Japanese man with MSA who presented with asymmetric parkinsonism, levodopa response, and later wearing-off phenomenon. During autopsy, the nigrostriatal pathology of presynaptic and postsynaptic dopaminergic receptor density and α-synuclein status were investigated. The other two patients with MSA-P were examined using the same pathological protocol. Results Four years after the onset, the patient died of sudden cardiopulmonary arrest. On autopsy, numerous α-synuclein-positive glial cytoplasmic inclusions in the basal ganglia, pons, and cerebellum were identified. The number of neurons in the putamen and immunoreactivity for dopamine receptors were well-preserved. In contrast, significant neuronal loss and decreased dopamine receptor immunoreactivity in the putamen were observed in the "levodopa-unresponsive" MSA-P control patients. These putaminal pathology results were consistent with the findings of premortem magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). All three patients similarly exhibited severe neuronal loss in the substantia nigra and decreased immunoreactivity for dopamine transporter. Conclusion Levodopa responsiveness in patients with MSA-P may be corroborated by the normal putamen on MRI and the preserved postsynaptic nigrostriatal dopaminergic system on pathological examination. The results presented in this study may provide a rationale for continuation of levodopa treatment in patients diagnosed with MSA-P.

Seeking Repeating Anthropogenic Seismic Sources: Implications for Seismic Velocity Monitoring at Fault Zones. JOURNAL OF GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH. SOLID EARTH 2023; 128:e2022JB024725. Abstract
Seismic velocities in rocks are highly sensitive to changes in permanent deformation and fluid content. The temporal variation of seismic velocity during the preparation phase of earthquakes has been well documented in laboratories but rarely observed in nature. It has been recently found that some anthropogenic, high-frequency (>1 Hz) seismic sources are powerful enough to generate body waves that travel down to a few kilometers and can be used to monitor fault zones at seismogenic depth. Anthropogenic seismic sources typically have fixed spatial distribution and provide new perspectives for velocity monitoring. In this work, we propose a systematic workflow to seek such powerful seismic sources in a rapid and straightforward manner. We tackle the problem from a statistical point of view, considering that persistent, powerful seismic sources yield highly coherent correlation functions (CFs) between pairs of seismic sensors. The algorithm is tested in California and Japan. Multiple sites close to fault zones show high-frequency CFs stable for an extended period of time. These findings have great potential for monitoring fault zones, including the San Jacinto Fault and the Ridgecrest area in Southern California, Napa in Northern California, and faults in central Japan. However, extra steps, such as beamforming or polarization analysis, are required to determine the dominant seismic sources and study the source characteristics, which are crucial to interpreting the velocity monitoring results. Train tremors identified by the present approach have been successfully used for seismic velocity monitoring of the San Jacinto Fault in previous studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We report a case of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD), who developed after the pembrolizumab treatment, an immune checkpoint inhibitor, against lung adenocarcinoma. The present case is discussed with the lung adenocarcinoma specimen which was stained by aquaporin-4 (AQP4) and with literature review of NMOSD linked to immune checkpoint inhibitors. CASE PRESENTATION A 62-year-old Japanese man presented with acute diencephalic syndrome, left optic neuritis, and myelitis 5 months after initiation of pembrolizumab treatment for lung adenocarcinoma. He was diagnosed with NMOSD based on serum anti-aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibody positivity. Immunohistochemistry of lung biopsy samples showed AQP4 expression on CD68+ cells. This is the fifth reported case of AQP4+ NMOSD triggered by an immune checkpoint inhibitor and the first with a brain lesion. Four out of five NMOSD cases, including the present case and one case with lung metastasis, had lung cancer. CONCLUSIONS Immune checkpoint inhibitors may trigger AQP4+ NMOSD owing to their molecular similarity to AQP4 expressed in lung and glial tissues. Prompt brain/spinal cord imaging and anti-AQP4 antibody testing may facilitate early diagnosis of immune-mediated adverse event in central nervous system associated with immune checkpoint inhibitors.

Abstract
Abstract
Inflammatory processes are essential for the repair processes after myocardial infarction. Among inflammatory cells involved in this process, macrophages play a critical role through polarization in pro-inflammatory M1 or reparative M2 subtype. Pioglitazone, known as a treatment drug for diabetes mellitus, is reported to regulate macrophage polarization toward reparative M2 subtype. Poly L-lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) has been widely accepted as the delivery carrier in drug delivery system (DDS).
Here, we aimed to validate the therapeutic effects and investigate the mechanisms of DDS-based treatment using pioglitazone to left ventricular remodeling after myocardial infarction.
Pioglitazone-incorporated PLGA microspheres (PGZ-MS) were prepared and the drug release profile was evaluated. The concentration of interleukin-10 secreted from murine bone marrow derived macrophages incubated with PGZ-MS was quantified in the culture supernatant. To validate the therapeutic potential of PGZ-MS in vivo, Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to permanent left coronary artery ligation to induce myocardial infarction. Mock-MS (100 μg) or PGZ-MS (100 μg) was injected to the infarct region just after induction (n=9–11/group). Cardiac function and left ventricular size were assessed by echocardiography. At 28-day after surgery, rats were sacrificed, and excised hearts were evaluated histologically.
PGZ-MS released 1.8±0.3% of incorporated PGZ within 24 hours and 29.5±1.2% within 14 days indicating sustained release of PGZ in vitro. PGZ-MS augmented Interleukin-10 release from bone marrow derived macrophages, indicating polarization toward reparative M2 subtype. PGZ-MS significantly ameliorated cardiac function after myocardial infarction (fractional shortening: MI vs MI+Mock-MS vs MI+PGZ-MS, 24.4±1.1 vs 24.3±1.6 vs 32.2±1.4%; P=0.0035) with reverse remodeling (wall thickness: MI vs MI+Mock-MS vs MI+PGZ-MS, 0.69±0.12 vs 0.71±0.13 vs 1.06±0.09; P=0.03). Immunohistochemical analyses revealed that PGZ-MS enhanced macrophage polarization toward reparative M2 subtype (ratio of reparative M2 macrophages: 0.39±0.03 vs 0.42±0.02 vs 0.54±0.02; P=0.0004) and attenuated apoptosis of cardiomyocytes in the ischemic border zone (MI vs MI+Mock-MS vs MI+PGZ-MS, 2.6±0.2 vs 1.9±0.2 vs 1.2±0.2 cells/field; P=0.002).
In the present study, we confirmed that PGZ-MS could realize sustained release of pioglitazone which resulted in sustained effect of macrophage polarization and attenuated left ventricular remodeling accompanied with the amelioration of cardiac dysfunction and cardiomyocytes apoptosis. The strategy of DDS-based macrophage polarization might serve as a promising strategy in cardiac regenerative therapy for ischemic heart disease in the future.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to clarify the relationship between progressive medial temporal atrophy and onset subtype in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). METHODS Medial temporal atrophy, ALS functional rating scale (ALSFRS), and cognitive function were assessed in 119 patients who were grouped into three ALS subtypes: bulbar, upper limb, and lower limb onset. Medial temporal atrophy, represented by a Z-score, was determined using an analysis software of magnetic resonance images known as the voxel-based specific regional analysis system for Alzheimer's disease (VSRAD). Among 119 patients, 60 underwent follow-up VSRAD, ALSFRS, and cognitive testing. The sequential data were compared among onset subtypes. Furthermore, TDP-43 pathology was assessed in 20 autopsied patients (including seven who underwent VSRAD before death) to examine the relationships among medial temporal atrophy, onset subtypes, and severity of the hippocampal TDP-43 pathology. RESULTS Multiple regression analysis revealed that the Z-score at baseline was associated with the age of onset and duration of illness. A high Z-score at baseline and the bulbar/upper limb subtypes affected the progression rate of Z-score. Pathological examination revealed increased hippocampal TDP-43 pathology score associated with bulbar and upper limb subtypes. Moreover, the Z-score before death correlated with the hippocampal TDP-43 pathology score. CONCLUSION Medial temporal atrophy in ALS is associated with bulbar and upper limb onset subtypes. This progression may be related to the extent of TDP-43 pathology.

Abstract
AIMS Endoscopic modified transseptal bi-nostril approach minimizes turbinate and olfactory mucosal invasion and ensures preservation of the turbinates and bilateral olfaction. The main objective of this study was to investigate the pre- and postoperative variations in olfactory function in patients using this approach, and the secondary objective was to investigate the complications associated with the surgical procedure. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study is a single-center prospective cohort study using STROBE analysis. To completely protect the bilateral turbinates and olfactory epithelium, this procedure provided access to the sphenoid sinus by a transseptal approach via the left nasal cavity and by the olfactory cleft approach via the right nasal cavity without any turbinate resection. A T&T olfactometer was used to assess the mean recognition threshold of the left, right, and bilateral nasal passages before and after surgery, and complications associated with the surgical approach were investigated. OBJECTIVES We included 27 patients who underwent endoscopic modified transseptal pituitary surgery with an olfactory and turbinate preservation approach at our hospital between April 2018 and December 2019. RESULTS The mean postoperative recognition threshold of the right, left, and bilateral nasal cavities did not worsen (P<0.001 for all) relative to the preoperative values, and there was no difference in values between the right and left nasal cavities (P=0.85). The nasal turbinates were preserved in all patients during the study period, and no recurrence was observed. CONCLUSION Our modified EETSA could be implemented as an approach for turbinate and olfaction preservation.

Abstract
Abstract
This paper presents results of an experimental study on natural convection in the vertical enclosure of a double coaxial cylinder where the inner wall is at constant heat flux. It is the objective of this experiment to understand the basic characteristics of heat transfer under the condition of natural convection coupled with thermal radiation in a vertical enclosure. The range of Rayleigh numbers based on the width of the double coaxial cylinder is set to be 5.6 × 105 < Ra < 1.04 × 108, the radius ratio is 2.73, the aspect ratio is 3.43 (cylinder length divided by annular gap). The heat transfer coefficient of natural convection coupled with thermal radiation was obtained as function of the Rayleigh number, aspect ratio of the enclosure, and temperature of the hot and cold surfaces. The experimental results show that thermal radiation can’t be neglected in analyzing heat transfer of vertical annulus with natural convection. The results provide the basic data for the design and the performance assessment of the future passive cooling system used in a high-temperature engineering test reactor.

Combination treatment with statins and bezafibrate induces myotoxicity via inhibition of geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate biosynthesis and Rho activation in L6 myoblasts and myotube cells. Abstract
Statins and fibrates are frequently used to treat hyperlipidemia; however, these drugs may have adverse effects such as rhabdomyolysis. The incidence of rhabdomyolysis due to fibrates and statins is low (0.0028-0.0096%) when administered as monotherapy, however it increases to 0.015-0.021% when the drugs are used in combination. The mechanism underlying myotoxicity induced by the combination of statins and fibrates is yet unclear. Here, we investigated the mechanisms underlying induced myotoxicity in rat myoblasts L6 and differentiated L6 cells (myotubes) using a combination of statins and fibrates. We found that cell death induced by a combination of fluvastatin or simvastatin with bezafibrate or fenofibrate in L6 myoblasts and myotubes was mediated by inhibition of geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate (GGPP) production. Additionally, the drug combination inhibited Rho activation in L6 myoblasts and myotube cells. In L6 myoblasts, the combination of statins and bezafibrate enhanced p27 expression and induced G1 arrest and apoptosis. Furthermore, combined treatment suppressed Akt activation and enhanced Bim expression in L6 myotubes but did not affect extracellular regulated protein kinase 1/2 activation. These results suggested that combined administration of statins and fibrates induced death of L6 myoblasts and myotube cells by inhibiting GGPP biosynthesis and Rho pathway activation. Supplementation with GGPP may be therapeutically beneficial for preventing myotoxicity associated with combined statin and fibrates treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a common disease, and endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is widely performed. However, there is no consensus regarding postoperative pain control after ESS, and postoperative opioid abuse is a problem in many countries. Acetaminophen is reportedly effective for postoperative pain control. Preemptive analgesia has received more attention lately, wherein pain is prevented before it occurs. In this study, we assessed the use of acetaminophen for preemptive analgesia during the perioperative period in ESS. METHODOLOGY This is a retrospective study of 175 patients who underwent ESS, septoplasty, and bilateral inferior turbinate mucosal resection at our hospital from April 2016 to February 2018. In total, 82 patients received 1,000 mg of acetaminophen during surgery and 4 hours after the first dose, while 93 patients did not receive it routinely. We compared these two groups. The primary outcome was the need to use additional analgesics prescribed by the ward physician and the secondary outcomes included postoperative pain, postoperative bleeding, reoperation, blood pressure, and body temperature. RESULTS The use of additional oral and intravenous analgesics was significantly reduced in the patients who received acetaminophen perioperatively. CONCLUSION Preemptive analgesia during the perioperative period of ESS could lead to satisfactory postoperative pain control.

Coexistence of neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: an autopsy case. BMC Neurol 2021; 21:273. Abstract
Background Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is a rare neurodegenerative disease. Pathologically, it is characterized by eosinophilic hyaline intranuclear inclusions in the cells of the visceral organs as well as central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous system cells. Recently, a GGC repeat expansion in the NOTCH2NLC gene has been identified as the etiopathological agent of NIID. Interestingly, this GGC repeat expansion was also reported in some patients with a clinical diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). However, there are no autopsy-confirmed cases of concurrent NIID and ALS. Case presentation A 60-year-old Taiwanese woman reported a four-month history of progressive weakness beginning in the right foot that spread to all four extremities. She was diagnosed with ALS because she met the revised El Escorial diagnostic criteria for definite ALS with upper and lower motor neuron involvement in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbosacral regions. She died of respiratory failure at 22 months from ALS onset, at the age of 62 years. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed lesions in the medial part of the cerebellar hemisphere, right beside the vermis (paravermal lesions). The subclinical neuropathy, indicated by a nerve conduction study (NCS), prompted a potential diagnosis of NIID. Antemortem skin biopsy and autopsy confirmed the coexistence of pathology consistent with both ALS and NIID. We observed neither eccentric distribution of p62-positive intranuclear inclusions in the areas with abundant large motor neurons nor cytopathological coexistence of ALS and NIID pathology in motor neurons. This finding suggested that ALS and NIID developed independently in this patient. Conclusions We describe a case of concurrent NIID and ALS discovered during an autopsy. Abnormal brain MRI findings, including paravermal lesions, could indicate the coexistence of NIID even in patients with ALS showing characteristic clinical phenotypes.

Abstract
In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a Ξ^{-} absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-Λ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as Ξ^{-}+^{14}N→_{Λ}^{10}Be+_{Λ}^{5}He. For the binding energy of the Ξ^{-} hyperon in the Ξ^{-}-^{14}N system a value of 1.27±0.21 MeV was deduced. The energy level of Ξ^{-} is likely a nuclear 1p state which indicates a weak ΞN-ΛΛ coupling.

Institutionalising wastewater surveillance systems to minimise the impact of COVID-19: cases of Indonesia, Japan and Viet Nam. WATER SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY : A JOURNAL OF THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION ON WATER POLLUTION RESEARCH 2021; 83:251-256. Abstract
This mini review describes the current status and challenges regarding institutionalisation of wastewater surveillance systems against COVID-19. Monitoring SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater has been proposed to be a potential tool to understand the actual prevalence of COVID-19 in the community, and it could be an effective approach to monitor the trend during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, challenges to institutionalise wastewater surveillance systems are still abundant and unfolding at a rapid rate given that the international understanding regarding the scientific knowledge and socio-political impacts of COVID-19 are in the developing stages. To better understand the existing challenges and bottlenecks, a comparative study between Japan, Viet Nam, and Indonesia was carried out in the present study. Through gaining a better understanding of common issues as well as issues specific to each country, we hope to contribute to building a robust multistakeholder system to monitor SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater as an effective disease surveillance system for COVID-19.

Abstract
This chapter describes the current status and challenges regarding the governance of wastewater surveillance systems against COVID-19. Monitoring SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater has been proposed to be a potential tool to understand the actual prevalence of COVID-19 in the community, and it could be an effective tool during the pandemic to monitor the trend as well as beyond the pandemic as an early warning system to prevent future outbreaks. However, challenges to institutionalize wastewater surveillance systems are still abundant and unfolding at a rapid rate given that the international understanding regarding the scientific knowledge and socio-political impacts of COVID-19 are in the developing stages. To better understand the existing challenges and bottlenecks, a comparative study between eight countries across the Asia-Pacific was carried out. Through gaining a better understanding of common issues as well as issues specific to each country, we hope to contribute to building a robust multistakeholder system to monitor SARS-CoV-2 as well as future pathogens in wastewater as an effective disease surveillance system for COVID-19 and unknown epidemics (disease X) in the community level.

CD49d and CD49e induce cell adhesion-mediated drug resistance through the nuclear factor-κB pathway in Burkitt lymphoma. JOURNAL OF PHYSIOLOGY AND PHARMACOLOGY 2020; 71. Abstract
Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is a highly aggressive form of non-Hodgkin's B-cell lymphoma. Currently, multi-agent chemotherapy regimens are being used to significantly improve cure rates and achieve complete remissions in BL patients. However, drug resistance can often occur within 6 months in BL patients, contributing to poor prognosis. Mounting evidence suggests that cell adhesion-mediated drug resistance (CAM-DR), caused by the interaction between the bone marrow microenvironment and tumour cells may play an important role in drug resistance to chemotherapy. However, the molecular mechanism underlying CAM-DR in BL has not been identified yet. In this study, we investigated the molecular mechanism responsible for CAM-DR in BL cells. We also examined the therapeutic targets of CAM-DR in BL cells and found CD49d and CD49e to be the important adhesion molecules involved. However, CD49a, CD49b, CD11a, CD29, CD18, and CD61 were not found to be associated with CAM-DR in BL cells. Furthermore, we clarified that CD49d- and CD49e-mediated CAM-DR could be attributed to an increase in the expression of B cell leukemia-xL (Bcl-xL) and survivin proteins, and a decrease in the expression of Bcl-2 associated X (Bax), Bcl-2 interacting mediator (Bim) and p53 upregulated modulator of apoptosis (PUMA) proteins via nuclear factor kappaB (NF-κB) activation. In addition, bortezomib was found to overcome CAM-DR in BL cells by inhibiting NF-κB. Thus, bortezomib may have potential clinical applications in the treatment of CD49d- and CD49e-mediated CAM-DR in BL patients.

Abstract
A panel of radiochemicals has enabled in vivo positron emission tomography (PET) of tau pathologies in Alzheimer's disease (AD), although sensitive detection of frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) tau inclusions has been unsuccessful. Here, we generated an imaging probe, PM-PBB3, for capturing diverse tau deposits. In vitro assays demonstrated the reactivity of this compound with tau pathologies in AD and FTLD. We could also utilize PM-PBB3 for optical/PET imaging of a living murine tauopathy model. A subsequent clinical PET study revealed increased binding of 18F-PM-PBB3 in diseased patients, reflecting cortical-dominant AD and subcortical-dominant progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) tau topologies. Notably, the in vivo reactivity of 18F-PM-PBB3 with FTLD tau inclusion was strongly supported by neuropathological examinations of brains derived from Pick's disease, PSP, and corticobasal degeneration patients who underwent PET scans. Finally, visual inspection of 18F-PM-PBB3-PET images was indicated to facilitate individually based identification of diverse clinical phenotypes of FTLD on a neuropathological basis.

Phenotypic variability and its pathological basis in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Neuropathology 2019; 40:40-56. Abstract
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is characterized by its inherent clinicopathological variability. The concurrence of upper and lower motor neuron signs is a common feature in the majority of patients with ALS. However, some patients manifest an atypical clinical course, with only upper or lower motor neuron signs, or various extra-motor symptoms including cognitive dysfunction, parkinsonism, autonomic dysfunction, or ophthalmoparesis. This variability indicates different manifestations of ALS and is reflected by ALS pathology spreading into the central nervous system. The presence of cytoplasmic inclusions positive for transactivation response DNA-binding protein 43 kDa (TDP-43) is a key feature in ALS. Loss of TDP-43 from the nucleus and its subsequent aggregation in the cytoplasm may occur in susceptible regions and may be associated with neuronal loss. However, in some regions, there is no apparent neuronal loss while TDP-43 accumulation is evident; in contrast, in other regions, neuronal loss is apparent without any evidence of TDP-43 accumulation. Therefore, in addition to TDP-43 dysfunction, underlying region-specific cellular vulnerability may exist in the upper and lower motor neurons and frontotemporal system in patients with ALS. The microscopic discrepancy and selective vulnerability may be linked to the macroscopic propensities of the sites of onset, and may also determine the direction and rate of progression of the lesions. Thus, there may be multicentric sites of onset, region-oriented disease development, and different speeds of disease progression across patients with ALS. ALS lesions occur in motor-related areas but may spread to neighboring areas. However, since lesions may spread in a discontinuous manner, and the dynamics of disease propagation have not been able to be identified, it remains controversial whether the stepwise appearance of TDP-43-positive inclusions is based on direct cell-to-cell protein propagation. Further understanding of the phenotypic variability of ALS and its pathological basis may serve as a guide for investigating the underlying pathogenesis of ALS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Diphenylarsinic acid (DPAA) intoxication caused by drinking contaminated well water was found in Kamisu, Japan. The symptoms indicated cerebellar-brainstem and temporo-occipital involvement. However, it remains unclear how it affects the human brain. To elucidate the effect of DPAA on the human brain, we analyzed cerebral blood flow (CBF) data after the drinking of DPAA-contaminated water was stopped and investigated the correlation between DPAA exposure level and CBF by single-photon emission computed tomography (CBF-SPECT). METHODS The DPAA-exposed inhabitants (n = 78) were divided into 35 symptomatic and 43 asymptomatic subjects and compared with 38 healthy controls. The DPAA concentration in nails or hair and well water was measured using a high-performance liquid chromatography system and coupled plasma mass spectrometry after adequate extraction treatment. CBF-SPECT data, obtained within 1 year after the drinking of contaminated well water was stopped, were analyzed by statistical parametric mapping. We also examined the relationship between variations in CBF-SPECT signals and variations in DPAA concentrations in the hair or nails of the subjects. RESULTS Compared with control subjects, CBF in symptomatic DPAA-exposed subjects was significantly lower in the occipital lobe, including the cuneus and inferior occipital gyri. The DPAA concentration in the nails or hair of subjects was inversely and significantly related to their CBF. CONCLUSION These data suggest that CBF-SPECT may be useful as a clinical marker to infer the effect of accumulated DPAA on the brain.
