Abstract
The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. Abstract
ABSTRACT We assessed the flood pulse effect on the diet composition, trophic niche breadth, and the amount of food intake of two Amazonian auchenipterids with different feeding strategies. Sampling was carried out quarterly (from April/2012 to January/2014) on the middle Xingu River, using gillnets. We measured specimens for standard length and total weight. The specimens’ stomachs were removed, weighed, and had their contents identified. We analyzed 360 stomachs of Auchenipterus nuchalis and 584 of Tocantinsia piresi. The diet of A. nuchalis was mainly composed of aquatic insects and crustaceans, while T. piresi fed on fruits and seeds. The diet composition of both species varied seasonally, but only T. piresi changed its trophic niche breadth in response to hydrological changes, becoming more specialist during the higher water periods (filling and flood). Both species also showed differences in their amount of food intake between hydrological periods, with A. nuchalis feeding more intensely in lower water periods (ebb and dry), while T. piresi in the higher water periods. We evidenced different responses to the hydrological periods for the related species. We emphasize that studies considering the relationship between flood pulse and feeding ecology of the organisms are essential to understanding river floodplain systems’ dynamics.

Abstract
Ageneiosus inermisis the largest species of the family Auchenipteridae (Siluriformes) and has a primarily piscivorous diet, although no comprehensive data are available on the habitat use of this species. Given this, the present study describes the diet ofA. inermis, and provides inferences on its habitat use, based on the known behavior of its prey species. We analyzed the stomach contents of 14 specimens collected in the middle of Xingu River in the Brazilian state of Pará, which we complemented with data on 47 other specimens obtained from two published studies. Most of the ingested items were fish associated with the bottom substrate and riverbanks. AlthoughA. inermisis considered a pelagic species, we conclude it forages by exploring the river’s bottom and margins. Furthermore, asA. inermisis presumed to be diurnal, we assume that it does not pursue its prey actively, given that most of the prey species are nocturnal, but rather searches actively during the daytime for prey hidden in the bottom substrate. This hypothesis on the feeding strategy ofA. inermiscan only be confirmed by underwater observations, either in the wild or under captive conditions.

Abstract
ABSTRACT A field study of the sex ratio, length-weight ratio, body size at first gonadal maturation, and the breeding season of the red-tailed catfish, Phractocephalus hemioliopterus, was carried out in the region of the middle Xingu River in the eastern Amazon basin. The fish were sampled quarterly from September 2012 to January 2014 using gillnets and long lines. The sex ratio was balanced, and while males and females were similar in standard length, the females were heavier than the males, on average. The males presented negative allometric growth, and the females, isometric growth. The estimated size at first maturity was 77.8 cm. The variation in the gonadosomatic index and the greater frequencies of mature specimens indicated a reproductive peak at the beginning of the high-water (flood) period. As P. hemioliopterus is an important commercial fish, our findings will contribute to the future development of effective conservation and management strategies, such as minimum catch size and a close season that is appropriate for the region. These data will also provide important insights for the evaluation of potential impacts on the biology of this fish resulting from the construction of Belo Monte dam.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Relationship between length and weight (LWR) is used to describe aspects concerning the life cycle of fish, but does not considers possible changes during the lifetime mainly due to the sexual maturation. Thus, this study aims to identify the size at first maturity of Auchenipterichthys longimanus (Siluriformes: Auchenipteridae) and infer if the reproductive engagement could change growth pattern, concerning the LWR. Estimates of the size at first maturity (L 50 ) were made by visual identification of gonadal development and through the gonadosomatic index (G SI ). L 50 was estimated as 12.5 cm for males and 13.0 cm for females when applied visual identification of gonads development. L 50 estimates increased to 13.05 cm for males and 13.7 cm for females when estimated from G SI values. LWR was adjusted by using a regular power function and through the polyphasic growth model, with proportionality and allometric coefficients changing in a two phases. The results indicate differences in the growth pattern concerning males and females, as well as polyphasic growth. The change in the growth pattern of the polyphasic LWR was estimated at 11.42 cm for males and 12.53 cm for females, suggesting that changes in the growth pattern can sign-out the attainment maturity in this catfish.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the seasonal pattern of the gonadosomatic index (GSI), condition factor (K), and sex ratio in the catfish Auchenipterichthys longimanus (Siluriformes: Auchenipteridae) as an approach to identify its reproductive period. A total of 589 A. longimanus specimens (251 males and 338 females) were captured in the rivers of the Caxiuanã National Forest, in the Brazilian state of Pará, between July, 2008 and July, 2009. Among the male specimens, 171 were classified as adults and 80 as juveniles, while there were 249 adults and 89 juvenile females. Using a sinusoidal equation, analysis of the GSI revealed a reproductive asynchrony between the genders, with males attaining their highest GSI values in January, while females peaked in March. For males, the sinusoidal regression for GSI values was significant only when used the complete data set (P=0.001), wears no trend was identified for bimonthly means (P=0.136). For females, by contrast, significant values were obtained for both the complete data set (P=0.012) and bimonthly GSI means (P=0.026). For the condition factor, the sinusoidal equation returned significant seasonal variation in both raw data (P=0.02) and with mean values (P=0.00) for males, but only with raw data for females (P=0.04), which appears to reflect variation in the energy budget between genders. With regard to the sex ratio, more reproductive females were captured than males in January and March, 2009, which suggests a pattern of segregation related to the reproductive process. These parameters are fundamental to the assessment, protection, and management of natural fish stocks, as well as providing guidelines for the development of conservation strategies.

Abstract
Feeding habits of the midnight catfish Auchenipterichthys longimanus collected in rivers of the Caxiuanã National Forest (Eastern Amazonia, Brazil) were investigated through the different hydrological periods (dry, filing, flood and drawdown). A total of 589 specimens were collected throughout seven samplings between July 2008 and July 2009, of which 74 were young males, 177 adult males, 89 young females and 249 adult females. The diet composition (Alimentary index - Ai%) was analyzed by a non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) and by the analysis of similarity (ANOSIM), which included 37 items grouped into nine categories (Aquatic insects, Other aquatic invertebrates, Arthropods fragment, Fish, Plant fragment, Seeds, Terrestrial insects, Other terrestrial invertebrates, and Terrestrial vertebrates). We also calculated the niche breadth (Levins index) and the repletion index (RI%). Differences in the diet composition between hydrological seasons were registered, primarily on diet composition between dry and flood season, but changes related with sex and maturity were not observed. The midnight catfish showed more specialists feeder habit in the flood period (March 2009) and more generalist habits in the dry season (November 2008). The amount of food eaten by A. longimanus based on repletion index (RI%), did not differ significantly from sex and maturity. However, we evidenced differences in RI% when comparing the studied months. These results provide important biological information about the trophic ecology of auchenipterids fish. In view of the higher occurrence of allochthonous items, this research also underpins the importance of riparian forests as critical environments in the maintenance and conservation of wild populations of fish in the Amazon basin.

Abstract
This paper describes the length-weight relationship, size at first maturation (L), and breeding season of Poecilia reticulata found in drainage channels on the campus of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) in the Brazilian city of Belém. A total of 1.936 specimens (942 males and 994 females) were collected in monthly samples of the study area between June, 2006, and March, 2007. Females were significantly longer and heavier than males. The length-weight relationship for males was established by the equation Pt = 5 × 10-5 × Ct2.397 and for females by Pt = 3 × 10-6 × Ct3.419. The estimated value of L was 17.5 mm for males and 20.4 mm for females, suggesting that males initiate reproductive activity at a smaller size than females. The abundance of mature females did not vary significantly among months, and there was little variation in the sex ratio, which was close to parity overall. Despite the adverse conditions encountered in the UFPA drainage system, P. reticulata appeared to have adapted its biological processes adequately.

Abstract
Os campos alagados ou savanas da ilha do Marajó é uma área disjunta do bioma Cerrado na Amazônia, e é considerada de grande importância para planos de manejo, conservação e preservação ambiental. A fim de ampliar o conhecimento ictiofaunístico da região, o presente estudo reuniu informações coletadas em campo, compiladas da literatura e selecionadas de coleções ictiológicas sobre a fauna de peixes da eco-região savana do Marajó. As coletas de campo ocorreram entre os anos de 2003 e 2005, e apresentaram como métodos a rede de mão, rede de arrasto, rede de tapagem e captura manual por técnica de mergulho, sendo que durante esse período foram amostrados os municípios de Ponta de Pedras, Chaves e Muaná. Além desses, outros quatro municípios também foram abordadas em estudos pretéritos. A eficiência desse inventário biológico foi avaliada pelos métodos de acumulação de espécies (rarefação) e pela estimativa de riqueza Bootstrap. Nestes três locais foram coligidas 146 espécies, sendo que destas, 89 espécies (60%) e oito famílias da classe Actinopterygii foram registradas como novas ocorrências para os campos do Marajó. Com o incremento das coletas nos três municípios, o total de espécies para os campos da ilha é de 254 espécies. Desse total, 44 espécies (17%) são alvos da pesca comercial para fins de alimentação e 46 espécies (18%) são capturadas na pesca ornamental. Sendo assim, inventários biológicos realizados em locais de grande importância ambiental como ou campos alagados da Ilha do Marajó são imprescindíveis, pois sem esta documentação, qualquer avaliação de biodiversidade, delimitação de áreas de endemismo e distribuição geográfica para execução de medidas conservacionistas fica prejudicada. Torna-se necessário, portanto, não apenas criar condições para proteger a fauna, mas para torná-la melhor conhecida através da criação de mecanismos de apoio a projetos de inventariamento e estudos de taxonomia e sistemática.
