Deltamethrin as inductor agent of precocious ovarian degeneration in Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. (Acari: Ixodidae) ticks

The cosmopolitan species Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. is one of the most widely distributed ticks all over the world. These ectoparasites are vectors of several pathogens and cause significant direct damage to their hosts. The biological success of these ectoparasites has been attributed to their ovaries and salivary glands, organs that ensure their survival in various environmental conditions. The importance of the ovaries in ticks is that, after mating, the individuals are able to lay approximately three thousand eggs. The present study had the objective to demonstrate the effects of deltamethrin obtained from the product Butox P CE 25^® (MSD Saúde Animal, São Paulo, Brazil) on the ovarian development of R. sanguineus s.l. females. The chemical was tested in the concentrations of 25, 50, 100 and 200 ppm (respectively 80, 40, 20 and 10 times lower than the recommended by the manufacturer). Through the application of histological techniques and HE staining, the results showed that the deltamethrin was potentially able to modify the morphophysiology of the oocytes in all developmental stages, interfering in the vitellogenesis, causing intense vacuolation, cytoplasmic disorganization, and alterations in the chorion secretion. In addition, the chemical affected the germ vesicle of some oocytes, causing damages and hypertrophy, fragmenting the chromatin and forming bodies strongly stained by hematoxylin. Therefore, this study confirmed that the deltamethrin had an important action on the reproductive system of the R. sanguineus s.l. females, causing the precocious structural disorganization of the germ cells, consequently preventing the generation of new individuals.

[Giant ethmoid neurinoma with intracranial extension]

The schwannomas are tumors arising from nervous tissue. It appears very rarely in the nose and paranasal sinuses. Intra and extracraneal extension of these tumors are even more uncommon. In this paper we report a case of a esfeno-ethmoidal schwannoma with anterior skull fossa extension. We describe the CT scan and magnetic resonance imaging and the histological features. Surgical resection was carried through a craniofacial approach. Some data about diagnosis, treatment and outcome of these tumors are revised.

[Clinical characterization of 450 patients with cerebrovascular disease admitted to a public hospital during 1997]

BACKGROUND

In Chile, cerebrovascular diseases are the fifth cause of death among men and the third cause among women.

AIM

To assess the clinical features and management of patients with cerebrovascular disease admitted to a public hospital during 1997.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

A retrospective analysis of clinical records of patients discharged with a diagnosis of cerebrovascular disease. Those records in which there was discordance between the discharge diagnosis and the clinical picture were not considered in the analysis.

RESULTS

Of the 563 discharges from the hospital with the diagnosis of cerebrovascular disease, 487 records were located and 450 were considered in the analysis. Fifty four percent of patients were male and ages ranged from 17 to 96 years old. Fifty-one percent of patients had an ischemic stroke, 34% a cerebral hemorrhage, 12% a subarachnoidal hemorrhage and 3% a transient ischemic attack. There was a history of hypertension in 64% patients and 20% had an adequate treatment. Eighteen percent were diabetics, 34% had a heart disease and 20% had a previous episode of stroke. Mean hospital stay was 6.3 days in the emergency room and 11 days in the neurology ward. Hospital infections appeared in 21% of patients (respiratory in 68% and urinary in 22%), lethality was 30.5% and a CAT scan was done in 94%. At the moment of admission, 10% of patients had an evolution of less than 2 hours, 27% had an evolution between 2 and 6 hours and nine cases were potential eligible for thrombolysis.

CONCLUSION

This is a picture of the local features of patients with cerebrovascular diseases that can be used as a reference for future studies.

Treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus infection with recombinant consensus interferon

To assess the safety and efficacy of consensus interferon (IFN-Con-1), 55 patients with chronic hepatitis C infection were treated with either 3, 6, 9, 12, or 15 microg IFN-Con-1 s.c. three times a week for 24 weeks, followed by 24 weeks of observation. There was a dose-response relationship with respect to the number of patients with normalized ALT concentrations or undetectable HCV RNA. At the end of the 24-week treatment period, the serum ALT had normalized in 18% of patients given the 3 microg dose and 42% of patients given the 12 microg or 15 microg doses of IFN-Con-1. At the end of the posttreatment observation period, the serum ALT was still normal in 10% of patients given the 3 microg, 6 microg, or 9 microg doses and in 50% of patients given the 15 microg dose. Also, at the end of the 24-week treatment period, 27% of patients given the 3 microg dose and 75% given the 15 microg dose had undetectable serum HCV RNA. At the end of the posttreatment observation period, the proportion of patients with undetectable HCV RNA ranged from 9% of those given the 3 microg dose to 50% of those given the 15 microg dose. Our study indicates that treatment with IFN-Con-1 appears to be safe and effective. In addition, use of 15 microg of IFN-Con-1 resulted in significantly more patients with sustained ALT normalization and absence of HCV RNA 6 months after cessation of therapy compared with treatment with lower doses of IFN-Con-1. Additional trials are underway to confirm these findings.
