Structural and optical properties of dysprosium doped hydroxyapatite nanoparticles and its bioimaging probe in human cells

In this work, the hydroxyapatite nanoparticle doped with trivalent dysprosium ions were synthesized by co-precipitation method. The characterization techniques like X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX) were carried to determine the crystalline and structural properties. The Rietveld structural refinement of the XRD patterns confirmed the purity of the phase formation of the synthesized nanoparticles. The photoluminescence emission spectra exhibited intense emissions in the blue region at 450 nm and 476 nm along with less intense yellow emission at 573 nm which can be attributed to the magnetic dipole and electric dipole transitions of dysprosium respectively. In order to evaluate the color tunability of the emitted light CIE chromaticity coordinate values were calculated. The intense blue emissions from the synthesized sample were found to be favourable for bioimaging. The images obtained from the fluorescence microscopy revealed that the dysprosium doped hydroxyapatite nanoparticles are potential bioimaging probes in human cells.

Solvent assisted evolution and growth mechanism of zero to three dimensional ZnO nanostructures for dye sensitized solar cell applications

We report the structural engineering of ZnO nanostructures by a consistent solution method using distinct solvents such as ethylene glycol, 1-butanol, acetic acid and water. The growth kinetics are found to depend strongly on the physicochemical properties of the solvent and zeta potential of the colloidal solution. Furthermore, the resulting nanostructures as a photoanode material, displayed a prominent structure dependent property in determining the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The fabricated solar cell with ZnO nanostructures based photoanode exhibited improved conversion efficiency. Moreover, the nanoflower based DSSCs showed a higher conversion efficiency of 4.1% compared to the other structures. The excellent performance of ZnO nanoflower is attributed to its better light-harvesting ability and increased resistance to charge-recombination. Therefore ZnO nanostructures can be a promising alternative for TiO2 in DSSCs. These findings provide new insight into the simple, low cost and consistent synthetic strategies for ZnO nanostructures and its outstanding performance as a photoanode material in DSSCs.

Exploring the LDS 821 dye as a potential NIR probe for the two photon imaging of amyloid fibrils

We report a commercially available benzothiazolium based dye LDS 821 (Styryl 9M) as a near infrared fluorescent probe for the detection of lysozyme amyloid fibrils. Change in the photophysical properties of the dye with respect to the change in viscosity of the environment is investigated. Increment in fluorescence lifetime and quantum yield with increment in viscosity proves the dye as a molecular rotor. The dye, upon binding with lysozyme fibrils, exhibits a red shift in the absorption spectrum with increased quantum yield. Strong fluorescence emission near the biological window as compared with Thioflavin T makes the LDS 821 dye a potential probe for imaging amyloid fibrils in vivo. Molecular docking studies were carried out to understand the mode of interaction between the dye and amyloid fibrils. Nonlinear optical properties of the dye upon incorporation with amyloid fibrils were explored, and they show a sizeable enhancement in two photon absorption with an increase in the concentration of amyloid fibrils. The findings suggest that the nonlinear optical absorption of the LDS 821 dye can be used as an alternative marker for amyloid fibrils.

Optical characterization and tunable antibacterial properties of gold nanoparticles with common proteins

The interaction of three proteins, viz. Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA), Human Serum Albumin (HSA) and Hen Egg White Lysozyme (HEWL) with gold nanoparticles (GNPs) is investigated using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy and circular dichroism (CD). Size and morphology of the samples was established using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and stability studies was established using zeta potential analysis. The stability of protein-GNP complex was found to be greater than that of individual protein as well as individual GNPs. Also HEWL-GNP complex was more stable compared to the other protein complexes. Absorbance of proteins increases with increase in gold nanoparticle concentration due to the extension of peptide strands of protein and decrease in hydrophobicity of gold nanoparticles. A ground state complex is also formed which is evident from the moderate shift observed in the absorbance peaks. Apparent association constant was also determined from the absorption spectra and was found to be maximum for HEWL and minimum for HSA. Gold nanoparticles were found to act as quenchers and reduced the protein fluorescence intensity. Binding constant and number of binding sites were found to be maximum for HEWL and minimum for HSA. The temperature dependent fluorescence studies were also performed to calculate the thermodynamic parameters and to determine the nature of interaction between the proteins and gold nanoparticles. The circular dichroism studies elucidate the reason behind the maximum binding for HEWL and minimum binding for HSA. TGA analysis determined the thermal stability of the samples. Fluorescence lifetime studies indicate static quenching of proteins. Antibacterial activity of protein-gold nanoparticles was studied against four pathogens, viz. Bacillus pumilus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. HEWL exhibits a tunable antimicrobial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa due to the maximum binding of HEWL with gold nanoparticles. The study proposes a novel method for adjusting the antibacterial activity of HEWL against Pseudomonas aeruginosa when the resistance of this pathogen is a major issue in the chemotherapy of many infectious diseases. Thus the combination therapy of protein-gold nanoparticles could prove to be a new approach in medical field in the near future.

Fluorescence resonance energy-transfer-based fluoride ion sensor

The present work describes an energy-transfer-based fluoride sensor using the highly photo-stable Coumarin 540a (C540a)-Rhodamine 6g (Rh6g) dye pair. Rh6g exhibits a decrease in fluorescence emission, whereas C540a shows no change in response to fluoride. The increase in fluoride concentration decreases the energy transfer efficiency between the C540a donor and Rh6g acceptor in acetonitrile, leading to a subsequent recovery of fluorescence emission from C540a molecules. The sensing mechanism using fluorescence resonance energy transfer is found to be highly specific towards fluoride detection when compared to the response towards other anions. The fluorescence emission of both dyes is monitored to enable fluoride detection within a broad range.

Ag nanowire-assisted low threshold WGM lasing from polymer optical fiber

Whispering Gallery Mode (WGM) emission has been observed from Ag nanowire doped polymer optical fiber laser. Low threshold lasing and high photostability of the active medium has been noticed with a given concentration of Ag nanowires in the microcavity of the fiber. Quantum yield and lifetime measurements of the dye (active medium) with and without nanowires confirm that presence of nanowires enhance the rate of radiative decay of the fluorophore, thereby providing low pump pulse energy for the excitation of lasing modes in the cavity, as compared with a bare dye-doped polymer fiber laser.

Photoluminescence and optical nonlinearity of CdS quantum dots synthesized in a functional copolymer hydrogel template

The acrylic acid content in the copolymer influences the size of the CdS QDs as well as the linear and nonlinear optical properties of the copolymer.

Spectral and Lensing Characteristics of Gel-Derived Strontium Tartrate Single Crystals Using Dual-Beam Thermal Lens Technique

The Dual Beam mode-matched thermal lens spectrometry is a sensible technique for direct measurements of the thermal properties of tartrate crystalline materials. Here we report the measurement of thermal diffusivity of Strontium Tartrate single crystals incorporated with Rhodamine 6G using the thermal lens experiment. The respective crystals were prepared by solution-gel method at room temperature. The absorption characteristics of three different Strontium Tartrate crystals viz. pure, electric field applied and magnetic field applied were also carried out.

Tuning whispering gallery lasing modes from polymer fibers under tensile strain

Wavelength tuning of whispering gallery lasing modes has been observed from Rhodamine-B-doped polymer fibers under tensile strain. Good quality whispering gallery lasing modes are produced from both solid and hollow fibers by transverse optical pumping. The lasing modes are shifted linearly toward the shorter wavelength side when the fiber is elongated in the axial direction. Compared with solid fiber, the lasing modes of hollow fiber can be tuned over the entire gain spectrum with a tuning range of ∼5  nm. It is found that the tuning of the lasing modes of hollow fiber is reversible.

Variations in fluorescence quantum yield of basic fuchsin with silver nanoparticles prepared by femtosecond laser ablation

Nano structured noble metals have very important applications in diverse fields such as photovoltaics, catalysis, electronic and magnetic devices, etc. In the present work, the application of dual beam thermal lens technique is employed for the determination of the absolute fluorescence quantum yield of the triaminotriphenylmethane dye, basic fuchsin in the presence of silver sol is studied. Silver sol is prepared by femtosecond laser ablation. It is observed that the presence of silver sol decreases the fluorescence quantum efficiency. The observed results are in line with the conclusion that the reduction in quantum yield in the quenching region is essentially due to the non-radiative relaxation of the absorbed energy. It is also observed that the presence of silver sol enhances the thermal lens signal which makes its detection easier at any concentration.

Laser emission from the whispering gallery modes of a graded index fiber

Whispering gallery mode (WGM) laser emission has been observed from rhodamine B doped polymer optical graded index (GI) fiber by transverse pumping with a frequency doubled Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. The propagation and confinement of these modes were also observed. A variation in the free spectral range from 0.29 to 1.24 nm is obtained along the length due to the confinement of WGMs in the GI fiber.

COMPLEXITY ANALYSIS OF DENSE ARRAY EEG SIGNAL REVEALS SEX DIFFERENCE

This article deals with the complexity aspects of the recorded electroencephalogram (EEG) signal from male and female subjects. The analysis follows direct application of time series measures of global linear complexity and characterization of the embedded complexity in the signals using the nonlinear statistic of approximate entropy. The study reveals significant differences in complexity between the two sex groups during passive, no-task conditions, whereas no apparent variation exists during a mental task state. The detection of subtle changes as well as the ease in presenting a global picture of the complexity variation on the human cortical surface makes the nonlinear statistic a better marker of system complexity.

Shifting of fluorescence peak in CdS nanoparticles by excitation wavelength change

CdS nanoparticles with different size are prepared by chemical bath deposition method. These particles show strong fluorescence at emission wavelength of 507 nm. It has been observed that this emission peak changes through a range of 147 nm, by varying the excitation wavelengths through 370-480 nm.The emission peak can thus be tuned by varying the excitation wavelengths. This peak emission wavelength shift is due to the selective excitation of vibronic levels in the surface state of the CdS nanoparticles.

Photoluminescence studies on rare earth titanates prepared by self-propagating high temperature synthesis method

The laser-induced luminescence studies of the rare earth titanates (R2Ti2O7) (R=La, Nd and Gd) using 355 nm radiation from an Nd:YAG laser are presented. These samples with submicron or nanometer size are prepared by the self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) method and there is no known fluorescence shown by these rare earths in the visible region. Hence, the luminescence transitions shown by the La2Ti2O7 near 610 nm and Gd2Ti2O7 near 767 nm are quite interesting. Though La3+ ions with no 4f electrons have no electronic energy levels that can induce excitation and luminescence processes in the visible region, the presence of the Ti3+ ions leads to luminescence in this region.

Linear and nonlinear optical characteristics of ZnO-SiO2 nanocomposites

We present the spectral and nonlinear optical properties of ZnO-SiO2 nanocomposites prepared by colloidal chemical synthesis. Obvious enhancement of ultraviolet (UV) emission of the samples is observed, and the strongest UV emission of a typical ZnO-SiO2 nanocomposite is over three times stronger than that of pure ZnO. The nonlinearity of the silica colloid is low, and its nonlinear response can be improved by making composites with ZnO. These nanocomposites show self-defocusing nonlinearity and good nonlinear absorption behavior. The observed nonlinear absorption is explained through two photon absorption followed by weak free carrier absorption and nonlinear scattering. The nonlinear refractive index and the nonlinear absorption increase with increasing ZnO volume fraction and can be attributed to the enhancement of exciton oscillator strength. ZnO-SiO2 is a potential nanocomposite material for the UV light emission and for the development of nonlinear optical devices with a relatively small limiting threshold.

Fabrication and characterization of dye mixture doped polymer optical fiber as a broad wavelength optical amplifier

Rhodamine 6G and Rhodamine B dye mixture doped polymer optical fiber amplifier (POFA), which can operate in a broad wavelength region (60 nm), has been successfully fabricated and tested. Tunable operation of the amplifier over a broad wavelength region is achieved by mixing different ratios of the dyes. The dye doped POFA is pumped axially using 532 nm, 10 ns laser pulses from a frequency doubled Q-switched Nd: YAG laser and the signals are taken from an optical parametric oscillator. A maximum gain of 22.3 dB at 617 nm wavelength has been obtained for a 7 cm long dye mixture doped POFA. The effects of pump energy and length of the fiber on the performance of the fiber amplifier are also studied. There exists an optimum length for which the amplifier gain is at a maximum value.

Side illumination fluorescence emission characteristics from a dye doped polymer optical fiber under two-photon excitation

Two-photon excited (TPE) side illumination fluorescence studies in a Rh6G-RhB dye mixture doped polymer optical fiber (POF) and the effect of energy transfer on the attenuation coefficient is reported. The dye doped POF is pumped sideways using 800 nm, 70 fs laser pulses from a Ti:sapphire laser, and the TPE fluorescence emission is collected from the end of the fiber for different propagation distances. The fluorescence intensity of RhB doped POF is enhanced in the presence of Rh6G as a result of energy transfer from Rh6G to RhB. Because of the reabsorption and reemission process in dye molecules, an effective energy transfer is observed from the shorter wavelength part of the fluorescence spectrum to the longer wavelength part as the propagation distance is increased in dye doped POF. An energy transfer coefficient is found to be higher at shorter propagation distances compared to longer distances. A TPE fluorescence signal is used to characterize the optical attenuation coefficient in dye doped POF. The attenuation coefficient decreases at longer propagation distances due to the reabsorption and reemission process taking place within the dye doped fiber as the propagation distance is increased.

Study of solvent effect in laser emission from Coumarin 540 dye solution

The results of a brief investigation of the amplified spontaneous emission and lasing characteristics of Coumarin 540 dye in as many as ten different solvents are reported. It has been found that C 540 dye solutions contained within a rectangular quartz cuvette give laser emission with well resolved equally spaced modes when pumped with a 476 nm beam. The modes were found to originate from the subcavities formed by the plane-parallel walls of the cuvette containing the high-gain medium. While the quantum yield remains a decisive factor, a clear correlation between the total width of the emission spectra and the refractive indices of the solvents of the respective samples has been demonstrated. The well-resolved mode structure exhibited by the emission spectra gives clear evidence of the lasing action taking place in the gain medium, and the number of modes enables us to compare the gain of the media in different samples. A detailed discussion of the solvent effect in the lasing characteristics of C540 in different solutions is given.

Thermal lens technique to study the effect of pH on electronic energy transfer in organic dye mixtures

The effect of pH on the fluorescence efficiency of fluorescein is evaluated using thermal lens technique. Fluorescence efficiency increases as the sample becomes more and more alkaline. But when fluorescein is mixed with rhodamine B fluorescence quenching of fluorescein takes place with the excitation of rhodamine B. The electronic energy transfer in this mixture is investigated using Optical Parametric Oscillator as the excitation source. The effect of pH on the efficiency of energy transfer in fluorescein-rhodamine B mixture is presented.

Propagation characteristics and wavelength tuning of amplified spontaneous emission from dye-doped polymer

The propagation characteristics of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) through a rhodamine 6 G-doped polymethyl methacrylate freestanding film waveguide were studied. This was done by shifting the excitation stripe horizontally along a transversely pumped waveguide. By this method, we could tune the ASE wavelength. The maximum tunability thus obtained was approximately 18 nm with a pump stripe length of 6 mm.

Study on the determination of molecular distance in organic dye mixtures using dual beam thermal lens technique

A sensitive method based on the principle of photothermal phenomena to study the energy transfer processes in organic dye mixtures is presented. A dual beam thermal lens method can be very effectively used as an alternate technique to determine the molecular distance between donor and acceptor in fluorescein-rhodamine B mixture using optical parametric oscillator.

COMPLEXITY QUANTIFICATION OF DENSE ARRAY EEG USING SAMPLE ENTROPY ANALYSIS

In this paper, a time series complexity analysis of dense array electroencephalogram signals is carried out using the recently introduced Sample Entropy (SampEn) measure. This statistic quantifies the regularity in signals recorded from systems that can vary from the purely deterministic to purely stochastic realm. The present analysis is conducted with an objective of gaining insight into complexity variations related to changing brain dynamics for EEG recorded from the three cases of passive, eyes closed condition, a mental arithmetic task and the same mental task carried out after a physical exertion task. It is observed that the statistic is a robust quantifier of complexity suited for short physiological signals such as the EEG and it points to the specific brain regions that exhibit lowered complexity during the mental task state as compared to a passive, relaxed state. In the case of mental tasks carried out before and after the performance of a physical exercise, the statistic can detect the variations brought in by the intermediate fatigue inducing exercise period. This enhances its utility in detecting subtle changes in the brain state that can find wider scope for applications in EEG based brain studies.

Effect of silver nano particles on the fluorescence quantum yield of Rhodamine 6G determined using dual beam thermal lens method

A 532 nm radiation from a diode pumped solid state laser was used as the excitation source. It has been observed that the presence of silver sol decreases the fluorescence quantum efficiency. This is expected to have a very important consequence in enhancing Raman scattering which is an important spectrochemical tool that provides information on molecular structures. We have also observed that the presence of silver sol can enhance the thermal lens signal which makes the detection of the signal easier at any concentration.

Photoacoustic investigations on the photostability of Coumarin 540-doped PMMA

In this paper, we present a laser-induced photoacoustic study on the photostability of laser dye Coumarin 540 doped in PMMA matrix and modified by the incorporation of low-molecular weight additives. The dependence of photostability of the dye on various experimental conditions, such as nature of solvents, incident optical power and dye concentration, is investigated in detail. The activation rates for the bleaching process are calculated for different concentrations and they suggest the possibility of two distinct mechanisms responsible for photodegradation. Further, analysis of the data confirms the linear dependence of photodegradation on the intensity of incident radiation. The role of different externally influencing parameters, such as wavelength and modulation frequency of incident radiation, is also discussed.

Thermal lens spectrum of organic dyes using optical parametric oscillator

The wavelength dependence of thermal lens signal from organic dyes are studied using dual beam thermal lens technique. It is found that the profile of thermal lens spectrum widely differ from the conventional absorption spectrum in the case of rhodamine B unlike in the case of crystal violet. This is explained on the basis of varying contribution of nonradiative relaxations from the excited vibronic levels.

NIR to UV absorption spectra and the optical constants of phthalocyanines in glassy medium

Optical absorption studies of phthalocyanines (Pc-s) in borate glass matrix have been reported for the first time. Measurements have been done corresponding to photon energies between 1.1 and 6.2 eV for free base, manganese, iron, nickel, molybdenum, cobalt and copper phthalocyanines. Several new discrete transitions are observed in the UV-vis region of the spectra in addition to a strong continuum component of absorption in the IR region. Values of some of the important optical constants viz. absorption coefficient (alpha), molar extinction coefficient (epsilon), absorption cross-section (sigma(a)), band width (delta lambda), electric dipole strength (q2) and oscillator strength (f) for the relevant electronic transitions are also presented. All the data reported for Pc-s in the new matrix have been compared with those corresponding to solution, vapor and thin film media.

Coordination in the dynamics of the brain as inferred from EEG analysis

The present study observed the coordination between cortical areas during no task conditions as well as for the pathological condition of epilepsy, by application of the phase synchronization technique to the EEG signal in a multichannel recording. The index obtained from the phase entrainment investigation was properly scaled by a novel method to take into account the effect of nearest neighbor interactions. This scaled index was analyzed temporally to learn about the behavior of regional interactions in time. The results obtained not only corroborate earlier known results, but also give deeper insight into actual brain functioning.

Photothermal deflection studies of GaAs epitaxial layers

Photothermal beam deflection studies were carried out with GaAs epitaxial double layers grown on semi-insulating GaAs substrates. The impurity densities in thin epitaxial layers were found to influence the effective thermal diffusivity of the entire structure.

Realization of Optical Logic Gates Using the Thermal Lens Effect

A sensitive method based on the principle of photothermal phenomena to realize optical logic gates is presented. A dual beam thermal lens method using low power cw lasers in a dye-doped polymer can be very effectively used as an alternate technique to perform the logical function such as NAND, AND and OR.

Studies on Fluorescence Efficiency and Photodegradation of Rhodamine 6G Doped PMMA Using a Dual Beam Thermal Lens Technique

In this paper we report the use of the dual beam thermal lens technique as a quantitative method to determine absolute fluorescence quantum efficiency and concentration quenching of fluorescence emission from rhodamine 6G doped Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), prepared with different concentrations of the dye. A comparison of the present data with that reported in the literature indicates that the observed variation of fluorescence quantum yield with respect to the dye concentration follows a similar profile as in the earlier reported observations on rhodamine 6G in solution. The photodegradation of the dye molecules under cw laser excitation is also studied using the present method.
