Abstract
Objective: To explore the effect of accurately localized mini anterolateral thigh perforator flap in repairing medium-sized skin and soft tissue defects in fingers. Methods: The study was a retrospective observational study. From December 2019 to September 2022, 15 patients with medium-sized skin and soft tissue defects who met the inclusion criteria in fingers were admitted to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, including 12 males and 3 females, aged 23 to 62 years. After debridement, the wounds were all accompanied by exposed tendons, bones, vessels and nerves, with an area from 4.0 cm×3.0 cm to 8.0 cm×3.5 cm. Computed tomography angiography and color Doppler ultrasonography examinations were performed on both lower limbs of the patient before surgery to accurately locate the anterolateral thigh perforators. When the flap with area from 6.0 cm×3.0 cm to 11.0 cm×4.0 cm was harvested, the flap was thinned. The artery and vein perforators of the flap were anastomosed respectively with the digital artery and dorsal metacarpal vein. If there was avulsion injury, infection, or burn in the recipient area, the main arterial and veinous vessels carried by the skin flap was anastomosed with the radial artery and accompanying vein. The lateral thigh cutaneous nerve carried by the flap was anastomosed with the stump of the digital nerve. The types of perforators of the lateral thigh artery were observed during operation and compared with the location of the vessels before operation. After operation, the survival and adverse complication of the flap were closely observed. During follow-up, the skin flap color, texture, and shape were observed; the wound healing in donor area was observed. At the last follow-up, the two-point discriminative distance of the affected finger pulp was measured, and the function of the affected finger was evaluated using the trial standard for the evaluation of functions of upper limbs of Hand Surgery Society of Chinese Medical Association, and the interphalangeal joint movement of the affected finger was observed; the patients' complaints about the adverse effects of flap resection on lower limbs were recorded. Results: During the operation, it was observed that the perforators of the flaps in 11 patients were the descending branch of the lateral circumflex thigh artery, in two patients, the perforators of skin flaps were the oblique branch of the lateral thigh artery, and the perforators in another two patients were the transverse branch of the lateral circumflex thigh artery, which were consistent with the preoperative vascular localization. After operation, all flaps survived without vascular crisis and infection. The patients were followed up for 6-12 months, the flaps had excellent color, texture, and appearance; only linear scars remained on the donor wound. At the last follow-up, the two-point discrimination distance in the finger pulp was 7-11 mm; the affected finger function was rated as excellent in 6 cases, good in 6 cases, and fair in 3 cases; the flexion and extension function of the finger was not affected; two patients complained of numbness in the lateral thigh after excision of the skin flap, and the other 13 patients had no complain of adverse complaints. Conclusions: The perforating branch in lateral thigh region can be accurately located by computed tomography angiography and color Doppler ultrasonography, accurate positioning of perforators before operation can reduce the damage to the donor area during the incision of the flap, the appearance and function of the affected finger can be restored to the maximum extent by thinning the transplanted flap and rebuilding the finger sensation. Therefore, it is an effective and reliable way to repair the medium-sized skin and soft tissue defects of fingers with the mini thigh anterolateral perforator flap.

[PMID: 38225440 DOI: 10.1007/s40620-023-01839-x] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 07/18/2023] [Accepted: 11/18/2023] [Indexed: 01/17/2024]
Abstract
PURPOSE To date, our understanding of IgA nephropathy (IgAN) pathophysiology has remained incomplete; therefore, treatment remains largely empiric, and the efficacy and safety of immunosuppressants remain controversial. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of hydroxychloroquine and leflunomide therapy in a retrospective cohort of patients with IgAN. METHODS We screened the IgAN registration database in our department, and a total of 159 kidney patients with biopsy-confirmed IgAN were enrolled, with 57 patients receiving hydroxychloroquine plus a renin-angiotensin system inhibitor (hydroxychloroquine group), 52 patients receiving leflunomide plus a renin-angiotensin system inhibitor (leflunomide group), and 50 patients receiving only a renin-angiotensin system inhibitor (renin-angiotensin system inhibitor-only group). Changes in proteinuria, hematuria, and the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), as well as adverse events, were analyzed during the follow-up period. RESULTS At the end of 6-month follow-up, proteinuria significantly decreased by 70.36 (57.54, 79.33)%, 57.29 (46.79, 67.29)% and 41.20 (25.76, 48.94)% in the hydroxychloroquine, leflunomide and renin-angiotensin system inhibitor-only groups, respectively, compared to baseline (all P values < 0.001). Hematuria significantly decreased by 71.07 (56.48, 82.47)% in the leflunomide group (P < 0.001). The eGFR improved by 3.72 ± 2.97%, 3.16 ± 2.00% and 1.91 ± 2.41%, respectively, in the hydroxychloroquine, leflunomide and renin-angiotensin system inhibitor-only groups, but without statistical significance. No serious adverse events occurred during the follow-up period. CONCLUSION Both hydroxychloroquine combined with a renin-angiotensin system inhibitor and leflunomide combined with a renin-angiotensin system inhibitor were more effective than a renin-angiotensin system inhibitor alone in improving proteinuria in IgAN patients. Hydroxychloroquine was more effective in reducing proteinuria, and leflunomide showed superiority in reducing hematuria. Our results need to be verified in large-scale randomized controlled trials.

Abstract
A total of 36 patients with suspected peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter dysfunction in the First Hospital of China Medical University from June 2020 to August 2022 were included, and five patients with normal PD catheter were also included as the control group. There were 22 males and 19 females, and aged (45±21) years. The volume of rapid-phase drainage in the control and dysfunction groups was (2 086±65) and (1 181±637) ml, and the total drainage time was (15.2±1.3) and (38.3±14.9) min, respectively. The volume of rapid-phase drainage in the dysfunction group was reduced and the total drainage time was longer than that in the control group (both P<0.05). Compared with group with PD catheter migration, the duration of new bag instillation was prolonged, the drainage volume in the rapid-phase was reduced, the total drainage duration was prolonged, and the ultrafiltration volume was decreased in the group with PD catheter obstruction (all P<0.05). The rapid exchange test can provide an early preliminary diagnosis of PD catheter dysfunction and identify the type of catheter dysfunction.

LncRNA ARAP1-AS2 promotes high glucose-induced human proximal tubular cell injury via persistent transactivation of the EGFR by interacting with ARAP1. J Cell Mol Med 2020; 24:12994-13009. Abstract
The persistent transactivation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) causes subsequent activation of the TGF-β/Smad3 pathway, which is closely associated with fibrosis and cell proliferation in diabetic nephropathy (DN), but the exact mechanism of persistent EGFR transactivation in DN remains unclear. ARAP1, a susceptibility gene for type 2 diabetes, can regulate the endocytosis and ubiquitination of membrane receptors, but the effect of ARAP1 and its natural antisense long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), ARAP1-AS2, on the ubiquitination of EGFR in DN is not clear. In this study, we verified that the expression of ARAP1 and ARAP1-AS2 was significantly up-regulated in high glucose-induced human proximal tubular epithelial cells (HK-2 cells). Moreover, we found that overexpression or knockdown of ARAP1-AS2 could regulate fibrosis and HK-2 cell proliferation through EGFR/TGF-β/Smad3 signalling. RNA pulldown assays revealed that ARAP1-AS2 directly interacts with ARAP1. Coimmunoprecipitation, dual-immunofluorescence and ubiquitination assays showed that ARAP1 may maintain persistent EGFR activation by reducing EGFR ubiquitination through competing with Cbl for CIN85 binding. Taken together, our results suggest that the lncRNA ARAP1-AS2 may promote high glucose-induced proximal tubular cell injury via persistent EGFR/TGF-β/Smad3 pathway activation by interacting with ARAP1.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a lethal diabetic microvascular complication characterized by chronic low-grade inflammation. The NOD-like receptor pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome is implicated in the progression of DN. MCC950 is a selective and potent inhibitor of NLRP3; however, its efficacy in DN requires further investigation. METHODS To investigate the efficacy of MCC950 in DN, eight-week-old type 2 diabetic db/db mice received injections of MCC950 intraperitoneally (10 mg/kg) twice per week for 12 weeks. Urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), renal function, pathological changes, markers of podocyte and fibrosis and NLPR3/caspase-1/IL-1β expression in the renal cortices of db/db mice were evaluated. High-glucose (HG)-treated rat glomerular mesangial cells were treated with various concentrations of MCC950 for 48 hrs. Markers of fibrosis and NLPR3/caspase-1/IL-1β expression in the glomerular mesangial cells were measured. RESULTS The NLRP3 inflammasome was activated in db/db mice and HG-induced mesangial cells by upregulating NLRP3/caspase-1/IL-1β pathway. Inhibition of the NLRP3 inflammasome with MCC950 reduced the production of active caspase-1 and active IL-1β in db/db mice and HG-induced mesangial cells. MCC950 reduced serum creatinine, urinary ACR and NGAL, attenuated mesangial expansion with increased matrix and tubular dilatation, alleviated thickened glomerular basement membrane (GBM) and foot process fusion without affecting body weight and blood glucose levels in db/db mice. MCC950 increased the expression of podocin in db/db mice, and decreased the expression of TGF-β1, fibronectin, collagen I and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) in renal cortices of db/db mice and HG-induced mesangial cells. CONCLUSION MCC950 ameliorated renal function, thickened GBM, podocyte injury and renal fibrosis in db/db mice, and decreased the production of fibrosis markers in HG-induced mesangial cells. MCC950 effectively ameliorated diabetic kidney injury by inhibiting NLRP3/caspase-1/IL-1β pathway, which may be a potential therapeutic strategy to prevent the progression of DN.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the most lethal diabetic microvascular complication; it is a major cause of renal failure, and an increasingly globally prominent healthcare problem. MATERIAL AND METHODS To identify susceptible microRNAs for the pathogenesis of DN and the targets of losartan treatment, microRNA arrays were employed to survey the glomerular microRNA expression profiles of KKAy mice treated with or without losartan. KKAy mice were assigned to either a losartan-treated group or a non-treatment group, with C57BL/6 mice used as a normal control. Twelve weeks after treatment, glomeruli from the mice were isolated. MicroRNA expression profiles were analyzed using microRNA arrays. Real-time PCR was used to confirm the results. RESULTS Losartan treatment improved albuminuria and the pathological lesions of KKAy mice. The expression of 10 microRNAs was higher, and the expression of 12 microRNAs was lower in the glomeruli of the KKAy untreated mice than that of the CL57BL/6 mice. The expression of 4 microRNAs was down-regulated in the glomeruli of the KKAy losartan-treated mice compared to that of the untreated mice. The expression of miRNA-503 and miRNA-181d was apparently higher in the glomeruli of the KKAy untreated mice, and was inhibited by losartan treatment. CONCLUSIONS The over-expression of miR-503 and miR-181d in glomeruli of KKAy mice may be responsible for the pathogenesis of DN and are potential therapeutic targets for DN.

Characterization of RsMYB28 and RsMYB29 transcription factor genes in radish (Raphanus sativus L.). GENETICS AND MOLECULAR RESEARCH 2016; 15:gmr8381. Abstract
Glucosinolates (GSLs) are important secondary metabolites in Brassicaceae plants. Previous studies have mainly focused on GSL contents, types, and biosynthesis-related genes, but the molecular characterization patterns of GSL biosynthesis-related transcription factors remain largely unexplored in radish (Raphanus sativus L.). To isolate transcription factor genes regulating the GSL biosynthesis, genomic DNA and cDNA sequences of RsMYB28 and RsMYB29 genes were isolated in radish. Two R2R3-MYB domains were identified in the deduced amino acid sequences. Subcellular localization and yeast-one hybrid assays indicated that both the RsMYB28 and RsMYB29 genes were located in the nucleus and possessed transactivation activity. Reverse transcription quantitative analysis showed that the RsMYB28 and RsMYB29 genes were expressed in seeds, leaves, stems, and roots at the seedling, taproot thickening, and mature stages. Both genes were highly expressed during the seedling and taproot thickening stages. The expression level of RsMYB28 was found to be up-regulated following wounding, glucose, and abscisic acid treatments, whereas RsMYB29 was up-regulated following wounding and methyl jasmonate treatments. These results provide insights into the biological function and characterization of the RsMYB28 and RsMYB29 genes, and facilitate further dissection of the molecular regulatory mechanism underlying the GSL biosynthesis in radish.

Abstract
Genetic variations in the caspase genes CASP-3 and CASP-7 are known to be involved in apoptosis, cytokine maturation, cell growth and differentiation. Polymorphisms of CASP-3 and CASP-7 genes have been increasingly recognized as important regulators in the development of cancer. However, whether there is a specific association is still controversial. Therefore, we made a Human Genome Epidemiology review and meta-analysis to explore the association between polymorphisms of CASP-3 and CASP-7 genes and cancer risk. Based on the inclusion criteria, we examined 9 case-control studies, with a total of 3142 cancer cases and 3670 healthy controls. Meta-analysis results showed that the homozygote (CC) of rs2705897 in the CASP-3 gene is positively associated with cancer susceptibility [odds ratio (OR) = 4.36, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.26-15.11, P = 0.02], while the C allele and C carrier (TC+CC) of rs1049216 are negatively associated with cancer risk (OR = 0.81, 95%CI = 0.69-0.95, P = 0.01; OR = 0.78, 95%CI = 0.63-0.97, P = 0.02, respectively). The G allele and G carrier of rs4647603 (A/G) in CASP-3 had positive associations with cancer susceptibility (OR = 1.69, 95%CI = 1.37-2.09, P < 0.001; OR = 1.93, 95%CI = 1.26-2.93, P = 0.002, respectively). The T allele of rs12415607, the G allele and homozygote (GG) of rs2227310, and homozygote (CC) of rs3124740 also had positive associations with cancer risk (OR = 1.18, 95%CI = 1.02-1.37, P = 0.03; OR = 1.17, 95%CI = 1.01-1.34, P = 0.03; OR = 1.34, 95%CI = 1.04-1.74, P = 0.03; OR = 1.30, 95%CI = 1.04-1.63, P = 0.02, respectively). In addition, homozygote (AA) of rs11196418 showed a significant negative association with cancer risk (OR = 0.36, 95%CI = 0.14-0.93, P = 0.03). These meta-analysis results demonstrated that CASP-3 and CASP-7 genetic polymorphisms are involved in the pathogenesis of cancer.

Observation of two new N* resonances in the decay ψ(3686)→ppπ0. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2013; 110:022001. Abstract
Based on 106×10(6)ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII facility, a partial wave analysis of ψ(3686)→ppπ0 is performed. The branching fraction of this channel has been determined to be B(ψ(3686)→ppπ0)=(1.65±0.03±0.15)×10(-4). In this decay, 7 N* intermediate resonances are observed. Among these, two new resonances, N(2300) and N(2570) are significant, one 1/2+ resonance with a mass of 2300(-30-0)(+40+109) MeV/c2 and width of 340(-30-58)(+30+110) MeV/c2, and one 5/2- resonance with a mass of 2570(-10-10)(+19+34) MeV/c2 and width of 250(-24-21)(+14+69) MeV/c2. For the remaining 5 N* intermediate resonances [N(1440), N(1520), N(1535), N(1650) and N(1720)], the analysis yields mass and width values that are consistent with those from established resonances.

Abstract
The two-photon transition ψ(3686)→γγJ/ψ is studied in a sample of 1.06×10(8) ψ(3686) decays collected by the BESIII detector. The branching fraction is measured to be (3.1±0.6(stat)(-1.0)(+0.8)(syst))×10(-4) using J/ψ→e(+)e(-) and J/ψ→μ(+)μ(-) decays, and its upper limit is estimated to be 4.5×10(-4) at the 90% confidence level. This work represents the first measurement of a two-photon transition among charmonium states. The orientation of the ψ(3686) decay plane and the J/ψ polarization in this decay are also studied. In addition, the product branching fractions of sequential E1 transitions ψ(3686)→γχ(cJ) and χ(cJ)→γJ/ψ(J=0,1,2) are reported.

Role of the CASP-9 Ex5+32 G>A polymorphism in susceptibility to cancer: A meta-analysis. Exp Ther Med 2012; 5:175-180. Abstract
Failure of apoptosis is one of the hallmarks of cancer. As an execution-phase caspase, caspase-9 plays a crucial role during apoptosis. To examine whether the Ex5+32 G>A (rs1052576) polymorphism in the CASP-9 gene alters cancer risk, we conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis of 7 case-control studies consisting of a total of 1668 cancer cases and 2294 healthy controls. All studies considered, A allele and A allele carriers of Ex5+32 G>A in the CASP-9 gene had significant associations with cancer risk (OR=0.72, 95% CI, 0.58–0.89, P= 0.003; OR= 0.76, 95% CI, 0.63–0.92, P= 0.004; respectively). In the subgroup analysis, we found that the A allele of Ex5+32 G>A was a protective factor for cancer risk in Chinese and American populations (OR=0.60, 95% CI, 0.44–0.81, P<0.001; OR= 0.80, 95% CI, 0.69–0.94, P= 0.005; respectively). Similarly, we also found positive associations between A allele carriers of Ex5+32 G>A and cancer risk in Chinese and American populations (OR=0.63, 95% CI, 0.44–0.90, P= 0.01; OR= 0.78, 95% CI, 0.62–0.98, P=0.03; respectively). In addition, we identified that A allele and A allele carriers of Ex5+32 G>A may decrease the risk of cancer in the Asian population (OR=0.60, 95% CI, 0.44–0.81, P<0.001; OR= 0.63, 95% CI, 0.44–0.90, P= 0.01; respectively). In conclusion, this meta-analysis demonstrated that A allele and A allele carriers of the Ex5+32 G>A polymorphism in the CASP-9 gene may be protective factors for cancer risk.

Abstract
Using a sample of 106×10(6) ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, we have made the first measurement of the M1 transition between the radially excited charmonium S-wave spin-triplet and the radially excited S-wave spin-singlet states: ψ(3686)→γη(c)(2S). Analyses of the processes ψ(3686)→γη(c)(2S) with η(c)(2S)→K(S)(0)K(±)π(∓) and K(+)K(-)π(0) give an η(c)(2S) signal with a statistical significance of greater than 10 standard deviations under a wide range of assumptions about the signal and background properties. The data are used to obtain measurements of the η(c)(2S) mass (M(η(c)(2S))=3637.6±2.9(stat)±1.6(syst) MeV/c(2)), width (Γ(η(c)(2S))=16.9±6.4(stat)±4.8(syst) MeV), and the product branching-fraction (B(ψ(3686)→γη(c)(2S))×B(η(c)(2S)→KKπ)=(1.30±0.20(stat)±0.30(syst))×10(-5)). Combining our result with a BABAR measurement of B(η(c)(2S)→KKπ), we find the branching fraction of the M1 transition to be B(ψ(3686)→γη(c)(2S))=(6.8±1.1(stat)±4.5(syst))×10(-4).

Abstract
The mass and width of the lowest-lying S-wave spin singlet charmonium state, the η(c), are measured using a data sample of 1.06×10(8) ψ(3686) decays collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. We use a model that incorporates full interference between the signal reaction, ψ(3686)→γη(c), and a nonresonant radiative background to describe the line shape of the η(c) successfully. We measure the η(c) mass to be 2984.3±0.6±0.6 MeV/c(2) and the total width to be 32.0±1.2±1.0 MeV, where the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic.

Abstract
The decays J/ψ → γ π+ π- π0 and J/ψ → γ π0 π0 π0 are analyzed using a sample of 225×10(6) J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector. The decay of η(1405) → f(0)(980)π0 with a large isospin violation is observed for the first time. The width of the f(0)(980) observed in the dipion mass spectra is anomalously narrower than the world average. Decay rates for three-pion decays of the η' are also measured precisely.

Abstract
A partial wave analysis of the pp¯ mass-threshold enhancement in the reaction J/ψ→γpp¯ is used to determine its J(PC) quantum numbers to be 0(-+), its peak mass to be below threshold at M=1832(-5)(+19)(stat)(-17)(+18)(syst)±19(model) MeV/c(2), and its total width to be Γ<76 MeV/c(2) at the 90% C.L. The product of branching ratios is measured to be BR[J/ψ→γX(pp¯)]BR[X(pp¯)→pp¯]=[9.0(-1.1)(+0.4)(stat)(-5.0)(+1.5)(syst)±2.3(model)]×10(-5). A similar analysis performed on ψ(3686)→γpp¯ decays shows, for the first time, the presence of a corresponding enhancement with a production rate relative to that for J/ψ decays of R=[5.08(-0.45)(+0.71)(stat)(-3.58)(+0.67)(syst)±0.12(model)]%.

Abstract
We present results of a study of the decay J/ψ → ωηπ+ π- using a sample of (225.2 ± 2.8) × 10(6) J/ψ events collected by the BESIII detector, and report the observation of a new process J/ψ → ωX(1870) with a statistical significance of 7.2σ, in which X(1870) decays to a(0)(±)(980)π±. Fitting to ηπ+ π- mass spectrum yields a mass M = 1877.3 ± 6.3(stat)(-7.4)(+3.4)(syst) MeV/c(2), a width Γ = 57 ± 12(stat)(-4)(+19)(syst) MeV/c(2), and a product branching fraction B(J/ψ → ωX) × B(X→a(0)(±)(980)π±) × B(a(0) (±)(980) → ηπ±) = [1.50 ± 0.26(stat)(-0.36)(+0.72) (syst)] × 10(-4). Abstract
Using (106±4)×10⁻⁶ ψ(3686) events accumulated with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII e⁺e⁻ collider, we present the first measurement of decays of χ(c1) to vector meson pairs φφ, ωω, and ωφ. The branching fractions are measured to be (4.4±0.3±0.5)×10⁻⁴, (6.0±0.3±0.7)×10⁻⁴, and (2.2±0.6±0.2)×10⁻⁵, for χ(c1)→φφ, ωω, and ωφ, respectively, which indicates that the hadron helicity selection rule is significantly violated in χ(cJ) decays. In addition, the measurement of χ(cJ)→ωφ provides the first indication of the rate of doubly OZI-suppressed χ(cJ) decay. Finally, we present improved measurements for the branching fractions of χ(c0) and χ(c2) to vector meson pairs.

Abstract
With a sample of (225.2±2.8)×10(6) J/ψ events registered in the BESIII detector, J/ψ→γπ(+)π(-)η(') is studied using two η(') decay modes: η(')→π(+)π(-)η and η(')→γρ(0). The X(1835), which was previously observed by BESII, is confirmed with a statistical significance that is larger than 20σ. In addition, in the π(+)π(-)η(') invariant-mass spectrum, the X(2120) and the X(2370), are observed with statistical significances larger than 7.2σ and 6.4σ, respectively. For the X(1835), the angular distribution of the radiative photon is consistent with expectations for a pseudoscalar.

Abstract
We present measurements of the charmonium state h(c)(1P(1)) made with 106x10(6) psi' events collected by BESIII at BEPCII. Clear signals are observed for psi'-->pi0 h(c) with and without the subsequent radiative decay h(c)-->gamma eta(c). First measurements of the absolute branching ratios B(psi'-->pi0 h(c)) = (8.4+/-1.3+/-1.0) x 10(-4) and B(h(c)-->gamma eta(c)) = (54.3+/-6.7+/-5.2)% are presented. A statistics-limited determination of the previously unmeasured h(c) width leads to an upper limit Gamma(h(c))<1.44 MeV (90% confidence). Measurements of M(h(c)) = 3525.40+/-0.13+/-0.18 MeV/c2 and B(psi'-->pi0 h(c)) x B(h(c)-->gamma eta(c)) = (4.58+/-0.40+/-0.50) x 10(-4) are consistent with previous results.

Abstract
The decays of J/psi --> etaphif(0)(980)[eta --> gammagamma, phi --> K(+) K(-), f(0)(980) --> pi(+)pi(-)] are analyzed using a sample of 5.8 x 10(7) J/psi events collected with the BESII detector at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider. A structure at around 2.18 GeV/c(2) with about 5 sigma significance is observed in the phif(0)(980) invariant mass spectrum. A fit with a Breit-Wigner function gives the peak mass and width of m = 2.186+/-0.010(stat)+/-0.006(syst) GeV/c(2) and Gamma = 0.065+/-0.023(stat)+/-0.017(syst) GeV/c(2), respectively, which are consistent with those of Y(2175), observed by the BABAR Collaboration in the initial-state radiation process e(+)e(-) --> gamma(ISR) phif(0)(980). The production branching ratio is determined to be Br(J/psi --> etaY(2175))Br(Y(2175)- -> phif(0)(980))Br(f(0)(980) --> pi(+)pi(-)) = [3.23+/-0.75(stat)+/-0.73(syst)] x 10(-4), assuming that the Y(2175) is a 1(--) state.

SUMMARY
Heterothermic mammals tolerate severe hypoxia, as well as a variety of central nervous system insults, better than homeothermic mammals. Tolerance to hypoxia may stem from adaptations associated with the ability to survive hibernation and periodic arousal thermogenesis. Here, we review evidence and mechanisms of hypoxia tolerance during hibernation, euthermy and arousal in heterothermic mammals and consider potential mechanisms for regenerative-like processes, such as synaptogenesis, observed within hours of hypoxic stress associated with arousal thermogenesis.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS The retina is embryologically similar to cerebral cortex and the tissues of both are exposed to similar blood glucose concentrations. Nevertheless, in diabetes the retina develops metabolic abnormalities and microvascular lesions from which cerebrum seems relatively protected. We directly compared glucose concentrations and expression of GLUT-1 (the major carrier transporting glucose from blood into the neural retina and cerebrum) in the two tissues from normal and diabetic rats. METHODS Tissue and intracellular glucose were measured using two methods: direct assay of glucose and assay of Amadori products on intracellular proteins. The expression of GLUT-1 was measured using western blots in tissue and in the isolated endothelial luminal membrane of the two vascular beds. RESULTS Both methods assessing intracellular glucose indicate that intracellular concentrations of glucose in diabetes increased significantly in the retina but not in cerebral cortex. Concentrations of free glucose and Amadori product in retinas of diabetic animals were increased above normal by 334% and 122%, respectively, whereas there was no statistically significant increase in either parameter in the cerebral cortex of diabetic animals. In contrast to the observed increase in glucose in the retina in diabetes, expression of GLUT-1 on the luminal plasmalemma of the retinal vascular endothelium and in homogenates of whole retina decreased to a statistically significant extent (55% and 36%, respectively compared to normal). In the luminal cell membrane of the cerebral vasculature, diabetes did not decrease expression of GLUT-1 but tended to increase it slightly. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION Even among tissues that do not require insulin for glucose uptake, tissue glucose concentration varies in diabetes. The greater increase in glucose concentration in retina than in cerebrum in diabetes probably contributes to the tissue differences in biochemical and histopathologic sequelae of the disease. The expression of GLUT-1 in the microvasculature is unlikely to account for the differences in tissue glucose between retina and cerebrum.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the effect of sodium glycyrrhetinate (SG) on neonatal rat myocardial cells. METHODS The neonatal rat myocardial cells were cultured in vitro. Radioimmunoassay and fluorimetry were used to determine cAMP and [Ca2+], respectively. RESULTS The beating rate of myocardial cells was depressed by SG 0.4 mmol.L-1 at 5, 10, and 15 min, from 73 +/- 9 min-1 to 62 +/- 5, 59 +/- 7, and 56 +/- 6 min-1, respectively. SG 0.1 and 0.2 mmol.L-1 showed above similar results at 15 min and 10, 15 min, respectively. When the myocardial cells were incubated with SG 0.2 and 0.4 mmol.L-1 at 37 degrees C for 10 and 15 min, the concentration of cAMP and- [Ca2+] were reduced. cAMP contents in SG 0.2 mmol.L-1 treated group at 10 and 15 min were lower than control group (1.09 +/- 0.18 vs 1.65 +/- 0.48 pmol per vial, P < 0.05; 1.12 +/- 0.35 vs 1.72 +/- 0.49 pmol per vial, P < 0.01), and so was [Ca2+] (30 +/- 4 nmol.L-1 vs 41 +/- 6 nmol.L-1, P < 0.05 and 28 +/- 6 nmol.L-1 vs 38 +/- 7 nmol.L-1, P < 0.01). SG 0.1 and 0.2 nmol.L-1 increased the pO2 change rate (87% +/- 5%, 75% +/- 4% vs 54% +/- 3%, P < 0.01) in suspension fluid of myocardial cells, but SG 0.4 mmol.L-1 decreased it (31% +/- 2% vs 54% +/- 3%, P < 0.01). CONCLUSION SG protects myocardium or treats ischemic cardiac disease.

Abstract
Among 61 patients with severe pregnancy induced hypertension, cerebral lesions were detected on CT scans in 23 cases (37.7%). The positive rates were 5/25 cases in preeclampsia and 18/36 cases in eclampsia. The incidence rate of cerebral lesions in eclampsia was significantly higher than that in preeclampsia (chi 2 test, P < 0.05). Furthermore, it showed that patients with renal impairment and retinal changes were more susceptible to cerebral lesions (P < 0.05), through comparative study of the relationships between either the function of liver and kidney or retinal changes and cerebral lesions. Main manifestations of cerebral lesions were ischemia, edema and infarction. The represented the different pathological stage of cerebral lesions. The cerebral lesions were mainly involved at cortical or subcortical area of bilateral parietal or occipital lobe (60%), secondly at the deep basal ganglia and the superior sagittal sinus. The pathological process of cerebral lesions and the management of pregnancy induced hypertension were analysed.

Abstract
300 cases of penile tumor are reported. The age peak was over 41 years (79.0%). Of these 300 cases, (66.7%) had redundant prepuce and 78 (26.0%) had phimosis which implies that penile tumors are closely related to those two conditions. Surgical treatment consisted of partial resection of penis in 182 (60.7%) patients, total resection in 66 (22.0%) and ilioinguinal lymphadenectomy after resection in 29 (9.7%). The pathological findings showed that in majority of cases, it was squamous cell carcinoma (270, 90.0%).
