Abstract
Bulk Bi0.5Sr0.5Fe0.5Cr0.5O3 (BSFCO) is a new compound comprising the R3c structure. The structural, magnetic property and exchange bias (EB) details are investigated. The material was in the super-paramagnetic (SP) state at room temperature. Exchange bias usually occurs at the boundary between different magnetic states after field cooling (HFC) acts on the sample. Here the result shows that changing HFC from 1 to 6 T reduces the HEB value by 16% at 2 K at the same time. Meanwhile, HEB diminishes as the ferromagnetic layer thickness increases. The variation of (the thickness of ferromagnetic layer) tFM with the change of HFC leads to the tuning of HEB by HFC in BSFCO bulk. These effects are obviously different from the phenomenon seen in other oxide types.

Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate the role of pancreas multidisciplinary team(MDT) clinic in the diagnosis of pancreatic diseases, patient compliance with MDT advice, and the impact of MDT on the postoperative survival of patients with pancreatic cancer. Methods: The study included 927 patients(554 males,373 females, aged (58.1±13.3)years (range: 15 to 89 years)) that had visited the pancreas MDT clinic of Zhongshan Hospital from May 2015 to December 2021,and 677 patients(396 males, 281 females, aged (63.6±8.9)years(range: 32 to 95 years)) who underwent radical surgery and with pathologically confirmed pancreatic adenocarcinoma from January 2012 to December 2020,of whom 79 patients had attended the pancreas MDT. The clinical and pathological data were collected and analyzed retrospectively. Diseases were classified in accordance with 2010 WHO classification of tumors of the digestive system and usual clinical practices. The Kaplan-Meier method was used for drawing the survival curve and calculating the survival rate. The univariate analysis was done by Log-rank test and the multivariate analysis was done by COX proportional hazards model. Survival rates were compared using χ2 test. Results: Among the 927 patients that had visited the MDT clinic,233 patients(25.1%) were referred due to undetermined diagnosis. A direct diagnosis was made in 109 cases (46.8%,109/233) by the MDT clinic, of which 98 were consistent with the final diagnosis, resulting in an accuracy of 89.9%(98/109). The direct diagnosis rate in the recent years(36.6%(41/112),from June 2019 to December 2021) decreased compared to that in the previous years(56.2%(68/121),from May 2015 to May 2019),yet the accuracy in the recent years(90.2%,37/41) was basically the same as before (89.7%,61/68). The rate of compliance of the entire cohort was 71.5%(663/927), with the compliance rate in the recent two and a half years(81.4%,338/415) remarkably higher than that in the previous four years(63.4%,325/512). Patients with pancreatic cancer that attended the MDT exhibited a trend toward longer median postoperative survival than patients that did not attend the MDT,but the difference was not statistically significant(35.2 months vs.30.2 months,P>0.05). The 1-year and 3-year survival rates of patients that attended the MDT were significanly higher than patients that did not attend the MDT(88.6% vs. 78.4%,P<0.05;32.9% vs. 21.9%,P<0.05,respectively),but the 5-year survival rate was not statistically different(7.6% vs. 4.8%,P>0.05). Conclusions: The pancreas MDT clinic is an accurate and convenient way to diagnose intractable pancreatic diseases, and in the recent years the patients' compliance rate with MDT advice has increased. Pancreatic cancer patients that have attended the MDT have higher 1-year and 3-year postoperative survival rates, but the long-term survival benefits of MDT still needs to be proved by clinical studies on a larger scale.

Abstract
We consider the bending effect on the formation of Majorana bound states (MBSs) in planar Josephson junctions where the normal stripe is tilted in a V shape. Our results show that the MBSs remain robust for moderate bending angles. Beyond some critical angles, the degradation of MBSs can be revealed by its eigenspectrum as well as the Majorana polarization (MP). Our results show that the parameter space of bending angle for robust MBSs can be significantly enlarged by tuning the superconducting phase difference across the Josephson junction. These findings suggest that the interplay of the junction geometry and the device parameters provides richer degree of freedom in designing topological superconducting devices for future applications. The MP analysis is an indispensable tool for characterizing the Majorana states.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the performance of the European Evidence-based Guidelines on Pancreatic Cystic Neoplasms (EEGPCN)(2018) and International Association of Pancreatology(IAP) Guideline(Version 2017) in predicting high grade dysplasia/invasive carcinoma-intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm(HGD/INV-IPMN). Methods: A retrospective analysis of 363 patients, who underwent surgical resection in Changhai Hospital affiliated to Navy Medical University from January 2012 to December 2018 and were pathologically identified as (intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm, IPMN),was performed. The patients, including 230 males and 133 females, aging (61.7±10.1) years(range:19 to 83 years). The proportion of HGD/INV-IPMN who met with the absolute indication(AI) of EEGPCN and high risk stigma(HRS) of IAP were compared. The binary Logistic regression analysis was used to find the independent risk factors of HGD/INV-IPMN.Eight combinations of risk factors derived from relative indication/worrisome feature or risk factors in this study, were made to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy. The area under curve(AUC) of receiver operating characteristics was used to evaluate the the cutoff value of risk factors(①CA19-9≥37 U/ml,②diameter of main pancreatic duct 5.0-9.9 mm,③enhancing mural nodule<5 mm,④(acute) pancreatiti,⑤acyst diameter ≥40 mm,⑤bcyst diameter ≥30 mm, ⑥thickened or enhancing cyst walls,⑦neutrophile granulocyte to lymphocyte ratio(NLR)≥2, ⑧cyst located in head, uncinate or neck,⑨carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA) ≥5 μg/L) number for predicting HGD/INV-IPMN.The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, true positive, true negative, false positive, false negative, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio,Youden index and F1 score were calculated. Results: Ninety-two patients(49.5%) of 186 ones who met AI and 85 patients(48.3%) of 176 ones who met HRS were respectively confirmed as HGD/INV-IPMN. In those patients who were not met AI,tumor location,thickened/enhancing cyst wall,CA19-9 elevated,NLR≥2 and CEA elevated were significantly (P<0.05) correlated with HGD/INV-IPMN. And tumor location(head/uncinate/neck vs. body/tail,OR=3.284,95%CI:1.268-8.503,P=0.014),thickened/enhancement cyst wall (with vs.without,OR=2.713,95%CI:1.177-6.252,P=0.019),CA19-9(≥37 U/L vs.<37 U/L, OR=5.086,95%CI:2.05-12.62,P<0.01) and NLR(≥2 vs.<2,OR=2.380,95%CI:1.043-5.434,P=0.039) were the independent risk factors of HGD/INV-IPMN. Patients with ≥4 risk factors of 9 in combination Ⅷ(①②③④⑤b⑥⑦⑧⑨) were diagnosed as HGD/INV-IPMN with the moderate accuracy(71.0%),moderate sensitivity (62.0%) and moderate specificity (73.0%). Patients with ≥4 risk factors of 9 in Combination Ⅶ(①②③④⑤a⑥⑦⑧⑨) were diagnosed as HGD/INV-IPMN with the highest specificity(83.0%) and patients with ≥3 risk factors of 8 in combination Ⅵ(①②③④⑤b⑥⑧⑨) were diagnosed as HGD/INV-IPMN with the highest sensitivity(74.0%). The AUC for diagnosis of HGD/INV-IPMN in combination Ⅵ,Ⅶ and Ⅷ were 0.72,0.75 and 0.75,respectively. Older patients and younger patients could respectively refer to combination Ⅶ and combination Ⅵ to improve the management of IPMN. Conclusions: Patients who meet AI of EEGPCN should undertake resection, otherwise the method we explored is recommended. The method of improvement for diagnosis of HGD/INV-IPMN is relatively applicable and efficient for decision-making of surgery, especially for younger patients with decreasing of missed diagnosis and elder patients with decreasing of misdiagnosis.

Role of MdERF3 and MdERF118 natural variations in apple flesh firmness/crispness retainability and development of QTL-based genomics-assisted prediction. PLANT BIOTECHNOLOGY JOURNAL 2021; 19:1022-1037. [PMID: 33319456 PMCID: PMC8131039 DOI: 10.1111/pbi.13527] [Citation(s) in RCA: 5] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.7] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 02/10/2020] [Revised: 10/29/2020] [Accepted: 12/06/2020] [Indexed: 05/24/2023]
Abstract
Retention of flesh texture attributes during cold storage is critical for the long-term maintenance of fruit quality. The genetic variations determining flesh firmness and crispness retainability are not well understood. The objectives of this study are to identify gene markers based on quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and to develop genomics-assisted prediction (GAP) models for apple flesh firmness and crispness retainability. Phenotype data of 2664 hybrids derived from three Malus domestica cultivars and a M. asiatica cultivar were collected in 2016 and 2017. The phenotype segregated considerably with high broad-sense heritability of 83.85% and 83.64% for flesh firmness and crispness retainability, respectively. Fifty-six candidate genes were predicted from the 62 QTLs identified using bulked segregant analysis and RNA-seq. The genotype effects of the markers designed on each candidate gene were estimated. The genomics-predicted values were obtained using pyramiding marker genotype effects and overall mean phenotype values. Fivefold cross-validation revealed that the prediction accuracy was 0.5541 and 0.6018 for retainability of flesh firmness and crispness, respectively. An 8-bp deletion in the MdERF3 promoter disrupted MdDOF5.3 binding, reduced MdERF3 expression, relieved the inhibition on MdPGLR3, MdPME2, and MdACO4 expression, and ultimately decreased flesh firmness and crispness retainability. A 3-bp deletion in the MdERF118 promoter decreased its expression by disrupting the binding of MdRAVL1, which increased MdPGLR3 and MdACO4 expression and reduced flesh firmness and crispness retainability. These results provide insights regarding the genetic variation network regulating flesh firmness and crispness retainability, and the GAP models can assist in apple breeding.

Abstract
Room-temperature shelf life is a key factor in fresh market apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) quality and commercial value. To investigate the genetic and molecular mechanism underlying apple shelf life, quantitative trait loci (QTL) were identified using bulked segregant analysis via sequencing (BSA-seq). Ethylene emission, flesh firmness, or crispness of apple fruit from 1,273 F1 plants of M. asiatica Nakai 'Zisai Pearl' × M. domestica 'Golden Delicious' were phenotyped prior to and during 6 wk of room-temperature storage. Segregation of ethylene emission and the flesh firmness or crispness traits was detected in the population. Thirteen QTL, including three major ones, were identified on chromosome 03, 08, and 16. A candidate gene encoding pectin acetylesterase, MdPAE10, from the QTL Z16.1 negatively affected fruit shelf life. A 379-bp deletion in the coding sequence of MdPAE10 disrupted its function. A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the MdPAE10 promoter region reduced its transcription activity. These findings provided insight into the genetic control of fruit shelf life and can be potentially used in apple marker-assisted selection.

Theoretical investigation of the scanning tunneling microscopy of Majorana bound states in topological superconductor vortices. JOURNAL OF PHYSICS. Abstract
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is an indispensable tool in detecting Majorana bound states (MBSs) in vortices of topological superconductors. By reducing the computational complexity via non-uniform grids, we systematically study the tunnel coupling as well as the temperature dependence of the differential conductance of MBSs in two dimensional devices. Numerical results show that the conductance peak approaches the quantized value 2e 2/h in strong coupling limit at low temperatures which are characteristic features of MBSs. More interestingly, a conductance local minimum in the spatially scanning is observed when the STM tip is placed at the vortex center. The dip structure can be enhanced with increased temperature or enlarged vortex size. We ascribe this observation to the sensitivity of the Andreev reflection processes of carriers at the vortex center where the thermal energy could be comparable to the vanishing pair potential. We also investigate the STM of two-vortex systems where the hybridization of the vortices can lead to oscillatory behavior of the state energy. With small inter-vortex distances, the original MBSs in vortices can merge into topologically trivial states and the conductance peak can be significantly suppressed.

MicroRNA-495 attenuates proliferation and inflammatory response in rheumatoid arthritis fibroblast-like synoviocytes through attenuating β-catenin pathway. J BIOL REG HOMEOS AG 2020; 34:837-844. [PMID: 32677423 DOI: 10.23812/20-47-a-22] [Citation(s) in RCA: 3] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/11/2022]
Abstract
Fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) exert a critical effect in the occurrence and progress of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). MicroRNA-495 (miR-495) can regulate many growth behaviors in various cell types. Nevertheless, the role of miR-495 is still unclear in RA-FLS. We aimed to explore the role and molecular mechanism of miR-495 in RA. The FLSs and synovial tissue from normal and RA cases were used in the study. RT-PCR analysis was used to examine the expression of miR-495. Western blot assay was conducted to determine the levels of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and β-catenin. Cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assays were performed to determine the proliferation of RA-FLS in different treatment groups. The results showed that miR-495 is down-regulated in both RA-synovial tissue and RA-FLSs. Overexpression of miR-495 could inhibit RA-FLS proliferation and inflammatory factors of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-11 and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and decrease the protein expression of MMP-9 and MMP-2. In addition, miR-495 could negatively regulate the expression of β-catenin in RA-FLSs. We also confirmed that the inhibitory role of miR-495 in RA-FLS is through the regulation of β-catenin expression. Taken together, miR-495 is downregulated in RA-FLS and RA synovial tissue, and miR-495 inhibits proliferation and inflammatory response in RA-FLS, partially via regulating β-catenin expression. The miR-495/β-catenin pathway may serve as a new therapeutic target for RA.

Abstract
Objective: To summarize the clinical characteristics and laboratory diagnostic methods of infant botulism caused by Clostridium botulinum type B. Methods: Clinical data of 3 infants with type B botulism who were admitted to Children's Hospital Affiliated to Capital Institute of Pediatrics from May to November 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Botulinum toxin was detected in fecal samples or fecal enrichment solution of the patients, and Clostridium botulinum was cultured and isolated from fecal samples. Results: The age of onset of the patients (two boys and one girl) was 3, 3 and 8 months old, respectively. Two cases had the onset in May and one case had the onset in November. There were two cases with mixed feeding and one case with breast feeding. One case's family members engaged in meat processing. All of them were previously healthy. All the children presented with acute flaccid paralysis, cranial nerve involvement and difficult defecation. Two cases had secondary urinary tract infection. Electromyograms of two cases showed that action potential amplitude of the motor nerve were lower than those of their peers. After treatments including intravenous human immunoglobulin, respiratory tract management, urethral catheterization, nasal feeding, etc., three cases recovered completely 2 to 4 months later. Type B botulinum toxin was detected in the fecal diluent of one patient, and the TPGYT enrichment solution and cooked meet medium of the feces of 3 patients, respectively. Clostridium botulinum B was identified from the feces of 3 infants after culture, isolation and purification. Conclusions: Combined with typical clinical manifestations including acute flaccid paralysis, cranial nerve involvement symptoms and difficult defecation examination, infant botulism can be clinically diagnosed. The detection of fecal botulinum toxin and the culture and isolation of Clostridium botulinum are helpful for the diagnosis.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effect and mechanism of miR-451 on the proliferation and migration of human colorectal cancer cell SW480 by targeting macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF). Methods: Microarray analysis was used to screen differentially expressed microRNAs and messenger RNA in SW480 cells. Real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) was used to detect the expressions of miR-451 and MIF in SW480 cells before and after transfection. Cell clone formation assay and Transwell assay were used to detect the proliferation and invasion of SW480 cells, respectively. Cell scratch assay was used to detect the migration ability of SW480 cells. The TargetScan database was used to analyze the correlation between miR-451 and MIF. Dual luciferase reporter gene was used to detect the interaction of miR-451 and MIF. MTT assay was used to detect the viability of SW480 cells. Results: Compared with human normal colorectal mucosal cell FHC (1.00), the expression of miR-451 was down-regulated in SW480 cells ( 0.36±0.18, P<0.001). Knockdown of miR-451 promoted proliferation, and migration of SW480 cells. Compared with that in FHC cells, MIF expression was up-regulated in SW480 cells (2.28±0.45, P<0.001). MIF down-regulation inhibited SW480 cell proliferation, invasion and migration. MiR-451 specifically bind to the MIF 3'UTR and regulated the expression of MIF. Overexpression of miR-451 reduced while overexpression of MIF increased the viability of SW480 cells. Overexpression of MIF promoted the proliferation and migration of SW480 cells (P<0.01), reversed the effect of miR-451 suppressed proliferation and migration of SW480 cells. Conclusion: MiR-451 may regulate proliferation and migration of human colorectal cancer cells by targeting MIF.

Abstract
Objective:To investigate the clinical value of intraoperative parathyroid hormone monitoring in operation of patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism(SHPT). Method:A retrospective analysis was carried out and enrolled, including 100 primary surgery and 14 second surgery. The data of 100 patients with primary surgery and 14 patients with reoperation were retrospectively analyzed. The criterion, predicting the success of surgery, is that the measured iPTH level declines by more than 80% compared with that before surgery, 20 minutes after the last parathyroid gland removed. Serum calcium, serum phosphorus and iPTH tested pre-and post-operation were statistically analyzed. Result:112 cases(98 cases in the first operation and 14 cases in the second operation) were cured by operation and the cure rate is 98.2%. In 109 cases(97 cases of first operation and 12 cases of reoperation), the intraoperative determination of parathyroid hormone was up to standard, and the sensitivity of predicting the success of surgery was 97.0% and 85.7%, respectively. Postoperative clinical symptoms such as joint pain and skin itching, etc. were significantly improved or disappeared. Postoperative iPTH, serum calcium and serum phosphorus were significantly different from those before surgery, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05). Conclusion:Intraoperative parathyroid hormone monitoring has vital clinical guiding value for SHPT, and can improve the success rate significantly. A more than 80% reduction in iPTH at 20 min after the last parathyroidectomy was a good predictor of successful surgery.

Quantum interference of Josephson current in topological Anderson insulator junctions. JOURNAL OF PHYSICS. CONDENSED MATTER : AN INSTITUTE OF PHYSICS JOURNAL 2019; 31:285301. Abstract
We investigate the critical supercurrent in Josephson junctions consisting of topological Anderson insulators (TAIs) via the Matsubara Green's function formalism. Our numerical results show that the disorder-induced edge states display distinct differences in dominating normal and supercurrent transport in the TAI phase. Unlike the hallmark of the TAI phase which exhibits a quantized conductance plateau, the critical supercurrent over the disorder strength exhibits a peak structure where the maximum value is reached at the weak-disorder boundary of the TAI phase. Although the magnitude of the averaged critical supercurrent is suppressed with increasing disorder strength, periodic oscillations of the supercurrent on an external magnetic flux survive in the TAI phase. These findings indicate that the supercurrent quantum interference effect can be an effective probe in detecting the emergence of disorder-induced edge state in TAIs.

Abstract
Objective: To explore preoperative predictive markers for invasive malignancy in intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm(IPMN). Methods: The retrospective case-controlled study was adopted.Seventy-nine patients who underwent surgery and with pathologically confirmed IPMN from January 2005 to December 2014 at Department of Pancreatic Surgery, Zhongshan Hospital Fudan University were enrolled.Forty-six patients were male and 33 were female, with an average age of (62.9±8.9)years (range:37-82 years).Tumor sites:56 tumors were located at the head of the pancreas,22 were located at the body and tail of the pancreas, and 1 was located across the whole pancreas.Surgical procedures: 51 patients underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy, 22 patients underwent distal pancreatectomy, 4 patients underwent segmental pancreatectomy and 2 patients underwent total pancreatectomy.IPMNs were classified into non-invasive lesions and invasive carcinomas according to the histopathological findings of the tumor.Thirty-two tumors were non-invasive lesions and 47 were invasive carcinomas. The preoperative findings were compared between patients with non-invasive IPMN and patients with invasive carcinoma by univariate analysis using t test and χ(2) test accordingly, and factors with statistically significance were subsequently submitted to multivariate analysis. Results: Univariate analysis showed that tumor size(P=0.022), carcinoembryonic antigen(P=0.012), CA19-9(P=0.011), lymphocytes(P=0.034), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio(P=0.010)and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio(PLR)(P=0.004)were predictive markers with statistical significance.Multivariate analysis showed that CA19-9(P=0.012)and PLR(P=0.025) were independent predictive markers for invasive malignancy in IPMN.The area under curve of the combination factor of CA19-9 and PLR(0.864) was larger than that of CA19-9(0.806) or PLR(0.685) alone, and all the authentic indicators of the combination factor were better than those of each alone. Conclusions: CA19-9 and PLR are independent predictive markers for invasive malignancy in IPMN.The combination of CA19-9 and PLR has improved efficacy than each alone.

Abstract
Land use/cover change (LUCC) is the most direct manifestation of the interaction between human activities and natural ecosystems. In recent years, due to the increasing human activities, regional environment has been dramatically changed. As one of heavily influenced and fragile and vulnerable ecosystems, the agro-pastoral ecotone in Northern China is a "hot spot" for land use/cover change research. Based on a literature review of LUCC in the agro-pastoral ecotone in Northern China, we first systematically summarized the progress of the boundary definitions of the agro-pastoral ecotone, and then synthesized the current findings, methods, procedures, topics, environmental impacts and adaption of LUCC in the region. Finally, we proposed that few comprehensive, process-based ecosystem simulations and eco-environmental impact studies had been reported in the current LUCC research and called for more multi-disciplinary, multi-methods, and multi-scale researches in the future LULC research in this area.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A variety of complex drug regimens are offered to kidney transplant recipients after transplantation. This study aimed to evaluate the behavioral and physiological outcomes of pharmaceutical care in this population. METHODS A cross-sectional prospective study was conducted, which collected and categorized kidney transplant recipients according to pharmaceutical care. In the IR group, patients had received irregular pharmaceutical care after transplantation, and in the RE group, patients had received regular intervention. Intervention included face-to-face interview, checkup for laboratory examinations, discovery of drug-related problems, and pharmaceutical consultation. Baseline knowledge for self-care was tested for patients in both groups. Correct concepts and medication guidance were consistently provided to enable patients to understand the importance of rejection prevention and knowledge for medication and renal care after transplantation. After 12 months, the same test was used to evaluate the outcomes for pharmaceutical care and a satisfaction questionnaire was used to assess for pharmacy service. RESULTS The study results revealed that patients in the RE group possessed better knowledge for self-care (P < .001); however, the differences at 12 months became insignificant (P = .72) after patients in the IR group had also received routine pharmaceutical care. Besides, serum creatinine level of the RE patients was stable without significant variation (P = .93), but it demonstrated a rising trend in IR patients (P < .01). Patients were greatly satisfactory with the intervention. CONCLUSIONS A consistent post-transplantation pharmaceutical care service is effective to substantially improve knowledge of post-transplantation self-care. Pharmaceutical care should be started as early as possible during the pre-transplant period and continue in a long-term follow-up.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the current situation of the activities of daily living (ADL) of the aged at home in western China, and to analyze its influencing factors so that we can improve the quality of life and pension services of elderly people. METHODS The elderly people who came from Qinghai Province, Ningxia Autonomous Region, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Shanxi Province, Guizhou Province, Guangxi Province, Sichuan Province, Yunnan Province and Chongqing were surveyed by questionnaires. Logistic regression model was used to analyze the influencing factors of ADL. RESULTS A total of 7 175 aged people living in the western China were surveyed. In the study, 78.86% of the aged at home could independently live. 12.32% of the aged were of mild dysfunction. 6.27% of the aged had moderate dysfunction. And 2.55% of the aged suffered severe dysfunction. Multiple Logistic analyses indicated that age, educational level, economic income, body mass index and disease were the factors that affected their ADL. The risk of decreased ADL in the 60-69 and 70-79year-old groups were 0.221 (95%CI: 0.190-0.258) and 0.353 (95%CI: 0.305-0.409) times that of the elderly over the age of 80. Compared with illiterate seniors, the risks of decline in ADL of primary school, junior high school, secondary or high school, college or undergraduates, postgraduates or above were 0.299 (95%CI: 0.140-0.637), 0.312 (95%CI: 0.146-0.663), 0.238 (95%CI: 0.112-0.510), 0.226 (95%CI: 0.105-0.484), and 0.238 (95%CI: 0.110-0.514) times. The declines in the risk of ADL for elderly people with quite difficult economic conditions, slight difficulty and breaking even were 2.720 (95%CI: 2.015-3.672), 2.344 (95%CI: 1.816-3.027), and 1.542 (95%CI: 1.215-1.957) times of the economically abundant people. Compared with those with a body mass index (BMI)≥28, the risk of ADL reduction for BMI<18.5 was 1.577 (95%CI: 1.142-2.179) times. And the ADL of the elderly with no disease was at the risk of falling 0.685 (95%CI: 0.602-0.779) times that of an elderly person with the disease. CONCLUSION The activities of daily living of age at home of western China are not high, and affected by many factors, such as age, educational level and so on. With the increasing of the elderly, maintaining and improving the ADL are the problems and challenges that we are faced with.

miR156 switches on vegetative phase change under the regulation of redox signals in apple seedlings. Sci Rep 2017; 7:14223. Abstract
In higher plants, miR156 regulates the vegetative phase change via the target SBP/SPL genes. The regulation of miR156 during ontogenetic processes is not fully understood. In the apple genome, of 31 putative MdMIR156 genes that encode pre-miR156, seven were dominantly expressed. However, the transcript levels of only MdMIR156a5 and MdMIR156a12 decreased significantly during the vegetative phase change, which was consistent with the mature miR156 level, indicating that miR156 is under transcriptional regulation. Leaf H2O2 content was higher in the adult phase than in the juvenile phase because of excess H2O2 accumulation in chloroplasts. When in vitro shoots were treated with menadione, diphenyleneiodonium, L-2-oxothiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid or buthionine sulphoximine, the expressions of MdMIR156a5, MdMIR156a12, and as well miR156 were coordinated with reduced glutathione (GSH) contents and glutathione/glutathione disulfide ratio but not H2O2 contents. Alteration of miR156 expression level by MdMIR156a6-overexpressing or miR156-mimetic transgenic Nicotiana benthamiana did not cause a corresponding change in reactive oxygen species or GSH status. Collectively, the results indicate that the vegetative phase change in apple is controlled by the MdMIR156a5 and MdMIR156a12 transcriptional regulatory network in response to the plastid–nucleus redox signals, such as GSH.

Abstract
PURPOSE We aimed to explore the potential value of the whole tumor apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) for discriminating between benign and malignant intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) of the pancreas. METHODS Forty-two patients underwent 1.5 T magnetic resonance imaging that included diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI, b=0.500 s/mm2). The mean, minimum, and maximum ADC values were measured for the whole tumor. The differences between benign and malignant IPMNs were calculated for the mean ADC, ADC-min, and ADC-max values. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis was conducted to evaluate their potential diagnostic performance. RESULTS Fifteen of 25 benign IPMNs demonstrated low or iso-signal intensity on DWI with a b value of 500 s/mm2 compared with normal pancreatic parenchyma, whereas all malignant IPMNs demonstrated high signal intensity. The mean value of ADC was significantly higher in benign IPMNs compared with malignant IPMNs (3.39×10-3 mm2/s vs. 2.39×10-3 mm2/s, P < 0.001), with an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.92 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.79-0.98). The ADC-min value of malignant IPMNs was also significantly lower than that of benign IPMNs (1.24×10-3 mm2/s vs. 2.58×10-3 mm2/s, P < 0.001), with an AUC of 0.94 (95% CI, 0.82-0.99). No marked difference was found between benign and malignant IPMNs for the ADC-max value (3.89×10-3 mm2/s vs. 3.78×10-3 mm2/s, P = 0.299). CONCLUSION Lower mean and minimum ADC values of the whole tumor might be potential predictors of malignant IPMNs of the pancreas.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the value of HLA-B27 antigen, antinuclear antibody (ANA), anti-dsDNA and Anti-Neutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibodies (ANCA) detection in diagnosis of rheumatism with uveitis. Methods: Seven hundred and twenty four newly diagnosed patients with non-infection uveitis in Beijing Tongren Hospital from March 2012 to March 2016 who long-term lived in Beijing and its surrounding areas were continuously enrolled. HLA-B27 antigen expressions in peripheral blood lymphocytes and ANA, anti-dsDNA and ANCA levels in serum were tested. The detailed clinical data, imaging examinations and pathological examinations were recorded to define whether the patients had rheumatism and the types of rheumatism. Results: There were 285 patients were diagnosed with rheumatism in 724 patients (39.4%), with 135 male (47.4%) and 150 female (52.6%). The mean age of male (41±14) was lower than that of female (44±14), with statistically significant (t=2.18, P<0.05). There were 176 patients with Spondyloarthropathies, 48 patients with primary systemic vasculitis, 22 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, 18 patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome, 16 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and 5 patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis in 285 rheumatism patients. The positive rate of HLA-B27(57.2%), ANA(15.8%), anti-dsDNA (5.3%) and ANCA(9.1%) in rheumatic uveitis patients were obviously higher than those of non-rheumatic uveitis patients [HLA-B27(1.1%), ANA(1.6%), anti-dsDNA (0.0%) and ANCA(0.9%)], with statistically significant (Fisher's exact test, P<0.01). The HLA-B27 positive antigen were mainly in patients with Spondyloarthropathies, rate was 92.1%; the positive ANA were mainly in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, rate was 95.5%; the positive anti-dsDNA were mainly in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, rate was 59.1%; the positive ANCA were mainly in patients with primary systemic vasculitis (besides Behcet disease), rate was 57.1%. Conclusions: The detections of HLA-B27 antigen, ANA, anti-dsDNA and ANCA are valuable for primary screening of some rheumatic uveitis. There fore, clinicians should select targeted laboratory examination combine with the patients' clinical manifestations. This will be helpful in the auxiliary diagnosis of some types of rheumatic uveitis.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the value of MRI in the prenatal diagnosis of abnormal fetal kidneys. Methods: From December 2014 to March 2016, 51 women underwent MRI and were confirmed as having fetuses with abnormal fetal kidneys when follow up. Their clinical and MRI profiles were analyzed retrospectively, including MRI manifestation, the fetal kidney signal intensity of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC). The signal intensity of DWI and ADC of the abnormal kidney and the normal opposite kidney, and those of the normal and abnormal kidneys in different individuals were compared. The accuracies of MRI and ultrasound in evaluating abnormal fetal kidneys were also compared. Results: MRI could accurately demonstrate the morphological features of abnormal fetal kidneys. There was no statistically significant difference between DWI signal intensity and ADC value of the abnormal kidney[368 ± 125, (1.516 ± 0.420) × 10-3 mm2/s] and the normal opposite one[410 ± 125, (1.362 ± 0.251) × 10-3 mm2/s], P values were 0.165 and 0.184, respectively. The DWI signal intensity of normal kidneys (401 ± 124) was higher than that of renal cysts (182 ± 40, P <0.01), and the ADC value of normal kidneys[(1.306 ± 0.252) × 10-3 mm2/s] was lower than that of renal cysts[(2.912 ± 0.235) × 10-3 mm2/s] and multicystic dysplastic kidneys[(1.870±0.654) ×10-3 mm2/s], P values were <0.01 and 0.045, respectively. The diagnostic accuracy of MRI and prenatal ultrasound for abnormal fetal kidneys were 94% (63/67) and 85% (57/67), respectively. However, there was no statistical difference between the two methods (P=0.070). Conclusion: MRI have an important role in the prenatal diagnosis and evaluation of abnormal fetal kidneys.

Active gratings tuned by thermoplasmonics-induced phase transition in vanadium dioxide thin films. OPTICS LETTERS 2016; 41:5768-5771. Abstract
We propose and investigate an active grating of gold metallic structure on vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin film illuminated by an intense light. Nonuniform phase transition in VO2 film is expected due to the thermoplasmonics effect where the plasmonic-induced light absorption features an enhanced local heat generation at nanometer-scale. The spatial profiles of the electric field, the heat generation, and the temperature distribution, as well as the temperature-dependent dielectric parameters in VO2 film, are solved numerically in a self-consistent manner. Our results show that the evolution of the metallic and semiconducting phases of VO2 changes the effective dielectric environment of the grating and modifies its optical response in a controlled way. The interplay of the thermoplasmonics effect and the phase transition processes can thus provide another degree of freedom in designing optical modulators or switches which are remotely tunable via incident light.

Abstract
To explore the reactivity of patients with renal anemia (MHD) to erythropoietin (EPO) in maintenance hemodialysis (HD), 31 patients were enrolled in this study. According to the level of serum ferritin (SF), they were divided into two groups; one group received treatment using recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) and the other group was given iron sucrose. Taking terminal EPO dosage, terminal erythropoietin resistance index (ERI) and rate of change of ERI (ΔERII) as target indexes, the influence of SF level on dosage of EPO was evaluated after usage conditions of relevant substances in a 3-month period. The results revealed that differences of dialysis age, albumin (ALB), blood calcium, initial and terminal SF, variable quantity of hemoglobin (Hb), terminal EPO and ERI between two groups had statistical significance. Furthermore, SF level and terminal EPO (r = -0.37, P < 0. 05) as well as SF level and terminal ERI (r = - 0.39, P <0.05) were negatively correlated. Difference of terminal ERI between the two groups had statistical significance. It can therefore be summarized that supplementing an iron agent intravenously to maintain SF level between 500 ng/ml and 1200 ng/ml may improve reactivity of patients with MHD to EPO. In addition, rHuEPO therapy in treating anemia of patients with MHD has the same effect with intravenous drug delivery, less side effects and is easy to administer.

Abstract
This study explores the effects of sodium ferrous chlorophyll treatment on the anemia of maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients, as well as the relevant biochemical parameters. We selected 72 patients who had received regular MHD treatment two or three times a week for more than 3 months in the Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Zhengzhou City of Henan Province from March 2014 to March 2016. They were equally divided into a treatment group and a control group. Haemoglobin (HB) and hematocrit (HCT) of the treatment group increased significantly after treatment (p < 0.01), but less in the control group (p < 0.05); Also serum ferritin (SF) and transferrin saturation (TAST) of the treatment group increased significantly after treatment (p < 0.01); SF of the control group also increased significantly (p < 0.01) and TAST of the control group increased (p < 0.05) but less than in the treatment group. No obvious changes of serum creatinine (SCR), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), C-reactive protein (CRP) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were found in either groups after treatment (p>0.05). Albumin (ALB) dosage of the treatment group increased after treatment (p < 0.05) while hemopoietin (EPO) decreased significantly (p < 0.01). ALB and EPO of the control group had no obvious changes after treatment (p>0.05). ALB level of the treatment group increased more significantly than in the control group (p < 0.05), while EPO dosage decreased more significantly than in the control group (p <0.05). Therefore, the combination of conventional western medicine and sodium ferrous chlorophyll can effectively improve anemia conditions of MHD patients and their quality of life.

Evaluation of coarsely ground wheat as a replacement for ground corn in the diets of lactating dairy cows. ASIAN-AUSTRALASIAN JOURNAL OF ANIMAL SCIENCES 2014; 26:961-70. Abstract
Eight multiparous Holstein cows (569±47 kg of BW; 84±17 DIM) were used to evaluate the effects of different levels of coarsely ground wheat (CGW) as replacements for ground corn (GC) in diets on feed intake and digestion, ruminal fermentation, lactation performance, and plasma metabolites profiles in dairy cows. The cows were settled in a replicated 4×4 Latin square design with 3-wk treatment periods; four cows in one of the replicates were fitted with rumen cannulas. The four diets contained 0, 9.6, 19.2, and 28.8% CGW and 27.9, 19.2, 9.6, and 0% GC on dry matter (DM) basis, respectively. Increasing dietary levels of CGW, daily DM intake tended to increase quadratically (p = 0.07); however, apparent digestibility of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) were significantly decreased (p<0.01) in cows fed the 28.8% CGW diets. Ruminal pH remained in the normal physiological range for all dietary treatments at all times, except for the 28.8% CGW diets at 6 h after feeding; moreover, increasing dietary levels of CGW, the daily mean ruminal pH decreased linearly (p = 0.01). Increasing the dietary levels of CGW resulted in a linear increase in ruminal propionate (p<0.01) and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) (p = 0.06) concentration, while ruminal acetate: propionate decreased linearly (p = 0.03) in cows fed the 28.8% CGW diets. Milk production was not affected by diets; however, percentage and yield of milk fat decreased linearly (p = 0.02) when the level of CGW was increased. With increasing levels of dietary CGW, concentrations of plasma beta-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA) (p = 0.07) and cholesterol (p<0.01) decreased linearly, whereas plasma glucose (p = 0.08), insulin (p = 0.02) and urea nitrogen (p = 0.02) increased linearly at 6 h after the morning feeding. Our results indicate that CGW is a suitable substitute for GC in the diets of dairy cows and that it may be included up to a level of 19.2% of DM without adverse effects on feed intake and digestion, ruminal fermentation, lactation performance, and plasma metabolites if the cows are fed fiber-sufficient diets.

Depression in systemic lupus erythematosus patients is associated with link-polymorphism but not methylation status of the 5HTT promoter region. Lupus 2013; 22:1001-10. Abstract
A higher prevalence of depression in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients has been reported, though the mechanism underlying this phenomenon remains unclear. The present study was conducted to explore whether the polymorphism and methylation status of the serotonin transporter gene (5HTT) promoter region (PR-5HTT) contribute to depression in SLE patients from both genetic and epigenetic perspectives. In this study, 96 SLE patients and 96 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. Depression levels of all subjects were evaluated using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS). The serotonin transporter-linked polymorphism (5HTTLPR) and the DNA methylation status of PR-5HTT were detected in peripheral lymphocytes of SLE patients and HCs. The differences in 5HTTLPR and DNA methylation of PR-5HTT between SLEs and HCs were compared. In SLE patients, the frequencies of short allele (S) and SS genotype of 5HTTLPR were higher in depressive SLE (SLE-D) patients than in non-depressive SLE (SLE-ND) patients. The mean HDRS score of SS homozygote patients was higher than that of patients with SL/LL genotypes. Conversely, PR-5HTT was hypomethylated in HCs as well as SLE patients. There was no difference in the methylation status between HCs and SLEs. Thus, the functional expression of PR-5HTT may be primarily regulated by gene polymorphism and not by DNA methylation. The risk allele of 5HTTLPR appears to be a major contributor to depression in SLE patients.

Scale and twist effects on the strength of nanostructured yarns and reinforced composites. NANOTECHNOLOGY 2009; 20:485702. Abstract
In this work we investigate the effects of yarn diameter and gauge length on the statistical strength of yarns spun from carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Tensile tests are conducted on a large sample set of nanostructured CNT yarns. The data show that strength varies substantially and both strength and statistical dispersion in strength decreases as yarn diameter increases. To explain these phenomena and forecast their effects on larger-scale structures, a hierarchical set of Monte Carlo simulation models is developed: the lower-scale model aims to predict the relationship between yarn nanostructure and tensile strength and the higher-scale model aims to relate the strength of CNT yarns to the strength of composites reinforced with unidirectionally aligned CNT yarns. Predictions indicate that, for both structures, the mean and statistical variation in strength will decrease as the surface twist angle, number of CNTs in cross section and gauge length of the yarn increases. The predicted reductions in variability due to yarn nanostructure will be important for determining ways to minimize the detrimental effects of increasing length scale on strength.

Photoreactivity of a push-pull merocyanine in static electric fields: a three-state model of isomerization reactions involving conical intersections. J Phys Chem A 2009; 113:9779-91. Abstract
The photochemistry of a prototype push-pull merocyanine is discussed using a simple three-state model. As a derivative of butadiene, the model focuses on two isomerization reactions around the two double bonds of the butadiene backbone. As a molecule substituted by an electron donor and electron acceptor at opposite ends, its structure as well as its photochemistry are expected to be strongly affected by the environment. In polar solvents, a zwitterion transition state for each of the isomerization reactions is stabilized, and its energy is on the same order as that of the biradical one; this leads to the symmetry allowed crossing (S(0)/S(1) conical intersection). It is shown that applying an external electric field or varying the solvent polarity changes the relative energies of the different transition states as well as that of the conical intersection, and thus different photochemical products can be obtained. In particular, the very existence of conical intersections is found to depend on these external parameters. This work provides a theoretical foundation for ideas expressed by Squillacote et al. (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2004, 126, 1940) concerning the electrostatic control of photochemical reactions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between pancreatic cancer (PC) and diabetes mellitus. METHODS All PC patients diagnosed and treated at Zhongshan hospital from January 1991 to December 2007 were retrospectively analyzed. During this period, 770 non-digestive tract, non-neoplastic and non-hormone-related patients matched for sex and age were collected as controls. The incidence of diabetes mellitus between the two groups was compared. RESULTS Between the PC group and the control group, sex and age of the patients were well matched. The incidence of diabetes mellitus was 34.63% in the PC group and 8.83% in the control group (P < 0.001, RR = 5.19). In the PC group there was no correlation between age, sex, site of the cancer, tumor differentiation, lymph node metastasis, TNM staging and the incidence of diabetes mellitus. In this group with diabetes, 74.56% experienced onset within two years of cancer diagnosis. Of the control patients, 57.35% had had diabetes for under 2 years (P = 0.009, RR = 2.18). In the PC group with diabetes, 5.9% had had diabetes for more than 10 years while compared with 8.8% of the controls (P = 0.42). CONCLUSION Whether diabetes mellitus is a result of or a risk factor for PC is still unclear. The incidence of diabetes mellitus is much higher in the PC patients. The onset of diabetes mellitus in adults might be an alerting factor that could lead to an early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.

Abstract
Objective: To study the prevalence of, and discuss factors contributing to, household second-hand smoke exposure in six counties in China, providing scientific support for the need to establish tobacco control measures in these areas. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was performed. Investigators conducted face-to-face interviews using a standardised questionnaire to collect information on demographics, passive smoking behaviours and knowledge, and attitudes towards tobacco control. The setting was six counties from the three provinces: Mianzhu and Xichong counties in Sichuan Province; Anyi and Hukou counties in Jiangxi Province; and Xinan and Yanshi counties in Henan Province. A total of 8142 non-smokers (aged 18–69) in 2004 were included in the data analysis. Household second-hand smoke exposure rate as defined as the proportion of household passive smokers in the non-smoker population was used as the measure of household second-hand smoke exposure. Results: The analysis of 8142 non-smokers revealed that, in these selected counties, the household second-hand smoke exposure rate was 48.3%. Respondents had positive attitudes towards tobacco control. Of 6972 respondents, 84.4% supported all the three tobacco control policies (banning smoking in public places, banning the selling of cigarettes to minors, banning all cigarette advertisements). In 3165 families with smokers, 87.2% of respondents reported that smokers would smoke in front of them. In 2124 families with smokers and children, 76.5% of respondents reported that smokers would smoke in front of children. As many as 42.1% of non-smokers would offer cigarettes to their guests, and only 46.8% of respondents would ask smokers to smoke outdoors. Only 6.3% of families completely forbade smoking at home. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed high second-hand smoke exposure for the following demographic groups: Jiangxi Province inhabitants, females, those with low education level, farmers and married respondents. Conclusions: Household second-hand smoke exposure rates in the selected counties were high. A high percentage of respondents reported that smokers would smoke in front of them and children. The pressure from non-smokers against smoking was relatively low, although offering cigarette was prevalent. Households that were completely smoking-free were rare, Further studies on these correlated factors could help us establish effective measures to reduce household second-hand smoke exposure.

Abstract
The development of digital oedema, adhesion formation, and resistance to digital motion at days 0, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 14 after primary flexor tendon repairs using 102 long toes of 51 Leghorn chickens was studied. Oedema presented as tissue swelling from days 3 to 7, which peaked at day 3. After day 7, oedema was manifest as hardening of subcutaneous tissue. The degree of digital swelling correlated with the resistance to tendon motion between days 3 and 7. At day 9, granulation tissues were observed around the tendon and loose adhesions were observed at day 14. Resistance to digital motion increased significantly from day 0 to day 3, but did not increase between days 3 and 9. The early postoperative changes appear to have three stages: initial (days 0-3, increasing resistance with development of oedema), delayed (days 4-7, higher resistance with continuing oedema) and late (after day 7-9, hardening of subcutaneous tissue with development of adhesions).

Abstract
We present the first measurement on the Nernst effect in the normal state of the odd-parity, spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4. Below 100 K, the Nernst signal was found to be negative, large, and, as a function of magnetic field, nonlinear. Its magnitude increases with the decreasing temperature until reaching a maximum around T* approximately equal to 20-25 K, below which it starts to decrease linearly as a function of temperature. The large value of the Nernst signal appears to be related to the multiband nature of the normal state and the nonlinearity to band-dependent magnetic fluctuation in Sr2RuO4. We argue that the sharp decrease in the Nernst signal below T* is due to the suppression of quasiparticle scattering and the emergence of band-dependent coherence in the normal state.

Abstract
Conventional double-random phase encoding is vulnerable to a chosen or known plaintext attack owing to the linearity of the system. We introduce a technique to break down this linearity with an undercover amplitude modulation in the encryption scheme. As an additional key, this operation can significantly enhance the security of the system. A series of computer simulations have shown the effectiveness of this method and its resistance against the known plaintext attack. The design and parameter choice of the amplitude modulator is also discussed.

Abstract
An algorithm to extract the arbitrary unknown phase shift and then reconstruct the complex object wave in generalized phase-shifting interferometry (GPSI) without the iteration process and measurement of object wave intensity is proposed. This method can be used for GPSI of any frame number >or=2. Both computer simulations with smooth and diffusing object surfaces and optical experiments have verified the effectiveness of this method over a wide range of phase shifts with very satisfactory results.

Abstract
We measured the resistance to tendon mobilisation within the first 5 days after primary repair of digital flexor tendons of chickens. Forty-six long toes of 23 chickens were assigned to six surgical groups and one unoperated control group. The tendons were partially lacerated and surgically repaired. The resistance to simulated active digital flexion was assessed in six operated groups at 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 days postoperatively. The force of tendon motion and work of flexion increased gradually from day 0 to day 5. The force and work at days 4 and 5 were significantly higher than those at days 0 and 1. No statistical difference was found in the resistance at days 0, 1, 2 and 3. Our results indicate that the gliding resistance gradually increases over the first 5 days after surgery and suggest that tendon motion may be started after the first 3 days, to avoid moving during this period of increased resistance with increased risk of tendon rupture.

Abstract
We present a study on negative refractions in the four lowest bands of two-dimensional (2D) square lattices formed by holographic lithography (HL) and compare these features with those of a lattice of the same kind but with regular dielectric columns. The plane wave calculations and FDTD simulations have shown that in some bands or for some interfaces the negative refraction can only happen in holographic structures, and generally the rightness of holographic structures and regular structures of the same kind may be different.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the role of glutamine on splanchnic blood flow, apoptosis of pancreatic acinar and the underlying mechanism in rats with severe acute pancreatitis. METHODS Forty-eight rats were randomized into two groups: the glutamine group (n = 24) and the severe acute pancreatitis group (n = 24). Jejunotomy was performed in all rats: the glutamine group also received glutamine, and the severe acute pancreatitis group received normal saline. Each group was then subdivided into three subgroups of eight rats each, with the rats be killed at 12, 24 and 36 h after the operation, respectively. A control group underwent sham operation (n = 8). The regional pancreatic microvascular blood flow was measured by Doppler ultrasound. The blood flow of the portal vein, splenic artery and superior mesenteric artery were also recorded. Apoptosis of pancreatic acinar cells was evaluated by TUNEL method. RESULTS The regional pancreatic microvascular blood flow (KHz) decreased significantly in the severe acute pancreatitis group (P < 0.01), and continued to decrease after 24 h (vs. 12 h, P < 0.01). The blood flow of the portal vein, splenic artery and superior mesenteric artery also decreased in the severe acute pancreatitis group. The glutamine group showed increased regional pancreatic microvascular blood flows, as well as increased blood flow of the portal vein, splenic artery and superior mesenteric artery (vs. the severe acute pancreatitis group, P < 0.01). The apoptotic index of pancreatic acinar in the glutamine group was higher than in the severe acute pancreatitis group (P < 0.01), and both were much higher than that in the control group (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Enteral administration of glutamine increased the splanchnic blood flow in severe acute pancreatitis rats. The apoptotic index of pancreatic acinar was negatively correlated with the severity of the disease. The interrelation between glutamine and apoptosis in severe acute pancreatitis is worthy of further investigation.

Abstract
We propose a holographic design of five-beam symmetric umbrella configuration, where there are a central beam and four ambient beams symmetrically scattered around the central one with the same apex angle, for fabrication of three-dimensional photonic crystals with tetragonal or cubic symmetries, and systematically analyzed the band gap properties of resultant photonic crystals when the apex angle is continuously increased. Our calculations reveal that large complete photonic band gaps exist in a wide range of apex angle for a relatively low refractive index contrast. Specifically, the face-centered cubic structure with a relative band gap of 25.1% for epsilon = 11.9 can be obtained with this recording geometry conveniently where all the beams are incident from the same half-space. These results will provide us with more understanding of this important recording geometry and give guidelines to its use in experiments.

Abstract
A novel fast convergent algorithm to extract arbitrary unknown phase shifts in generalized phase-shifting interferometry (PSI) is proposed and verified by a series of computer simulations. In this algorithm an error function is introduced and then the unknown phase shifts are found by an iterative tangent approach. In combination with the statistical method, this algorithm can give the most exact results in the fewest iteration steps. It can be used for generalized PSI of arbitrary frames for both smooth and diffusing objects and can usually reach the exact phase shifts with only four or five iterations for three- or four-frame PSI.

Abstract
Conventional phase-shifting interferometry (PSI) needs at least three interferograms. A novel algorithm of two-step PSI, with an arbitrary known phase step, by which a complex object field can be reconstructed with only two interferograms is proposed. This algorithm is then applied to an information security system based on double random-phase encoding in the Fresnel domain. The feasibility of this method and its robustness against occlusion and additional noise attacks are verified by computer simulations. This approach can considerably improve the efficiency of data transmission and is very suitable for Internet use.

1. In the chronic, awake, instrumented sheep model NG-nitro-L-arginine (NOLA) an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthesis, injected at a dose of 40 mg/kg, produced a significant increase in systolic blood pressure (from 110 +/- 6 to 145 +/- 8 mmHg after 5 min) which persisted for at least 1 h but returned to baseline after 24 h. 2. When NOLA was repeated 1 and 4 days after the first injection, the blood pressure response was significantly attenuated, and at 1 day was no greater than the response to an equivalent volume of saline. The blood pressure response returned to the initial response with an 8 day interval between injections. 3. There was no significant blood pressure response to 100 mL of saline before the NOLA injection; however, 1 and 4 days after NOLA there was a significant rise in blood pressure.
