Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato prevalence in Ixodes scapularis from Canada: a thirty-year summary and meta-analysis (1990-2020)

Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Bb) are a complex of bacteria genospecies that can cause Lyme disease (LD) in humans after the bite of an infected Ixodes spp. vector tick. In Canada, incidence of LD is increasing in part due to the rapid geographic expansion of Ixodes scapularis across the southcentral and eastern provinces. To better understand temporal and spatial (provincial) prevalence of Bb infection of I. scapularis and how tick surveillance is utilized in Canada to assess LD risk, a literature review was conducted. Tick surveillance studies published between January 1975 to November 2023, that measured the prevalence of Bb in I. scapularis via "passive surveillance" from the public citizenry or "active surveillance" by drag or flag sampling of host-seeking ticks in Canada were included for review. Meta-analyses were conducted via random effects modeling. Forty-seven articles, yielding 26 passive and 28 active surveillance studies, met inclusion criteria. Mean durations of collection for I. scapularis were 2.1 years in active surveillance studies (1999-2020) and 5.5 years by passive surveillance studies (1990-2020). Collectively, data were extracted on 99,528 I. scapularis nymphs and adults collected between 1990-2020 across nine provinces, including Newfoundland & Labrador (33 ticks) and Alberta (208 ticks). More studies were conducted in Ontario (36) than any other province. Across nine provinces, the prevalence of Bb infection in I. scapularis collected by passive surveillance was 14.6% with the highest prevalence in Nova Scotia at 20.5% (minimum studies >1). Among host-seeking I. scapularis collected via active surveillance, Bb infection prevalence was 10.5% in nymphs, 31.9% in adults, and 23.8% across both life stages. Host-seeking I. scapularis nymphs and adults from Ontario had the highest Bb prevalence at 13.6% and 34.8%, respectively. Between 2007-2019, Bb infection prevalence in host-seeking I. scapularis was positively associated over time (p<0.001) which is concurrent with a ∼25-fold increase in the number of annually reported LD cases in Canada over the same period. The prevalence of Bb-infection in I. scapularis has rapidly increased over three decades as reported by tick surveillance studies in Canada which coincides with increasing human incidence for LD. The wide-ranging distribution and variable prevalence of Bb-infected I. scapularis ticks across provinces demonstrates the growing need for long-term standardized tick surveillance to monitor the changing trends in I. scapularis populations and best define LD risk areas in Canada.

Quasi-optical design for the cross-polarization scattering diagnostic on the HL-3 tokamak

As the plasma beta (β) increases in high-performance tokamaks, electromagnetic turbulence becomes more significant, potentially constraining their operational range. To investigate this turbulence, a cross-polarization scattering (CPS) diagnostic system is being developed on the HL-3 tokamak for simultaneous measurements of density and magnetic fluctuations. In this work, a quasi-optical system has been designed and analyzed for the Q-band CPS diagnostic. The system includes a lens group for beam waist size optimization, a rotatable wire-grid polarizer for polarization adjustment, and a reflector group for measurement range regulation and system response enhancement. Laboratory tests demonstrated a beam radius of order 4 cm at the target measurement location (near the plasma pedestal), cross-polarization isolation exceeding 30 dB, and poloidal and toroidal angle adjustment ranges of ±40° and ±15°, respectively. These results verify the system's feasibility through laboratory evaluations. The quasi-optical system has been installed on the HL-3 tokamak during the 2023 experimental campaign to support the development of CPS diagnostics.

Amplitude Analysis of the B^{0}→K^{*0}μ^{+}μ^{-} Decay

An amplitude analysis of the B^{0}→K^{*0}μ^{+}μ^{-} decay is presented using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7  fb^{-1} of pp collision data collected with the LHCb experiment. For the first time, the coefficients associated to short-distance physics effects, sensitive to processes beyond the standard model, are extracted directly from the data through a q^{2}-unbinned amplitude analysis, where q^{2} is the μ^{+}μ^{-} invariant mass squared. Long-distance contributions, which originate from nonfactorizable QCD processes, are systematically investigated, and the most accurate assessment to date of their impact on the physical observables is obtained. The pattern of measured corrections to the short-distance couplings is found to be consistent with previous analyses of b- to s-quark transitions, with the largest discrepancy from the standard model predictions found to be at the level of 1.8 standard deviations. The global significance of the observed differences in the decay is 1.4 standard deviations.

Cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) is a DNA receptor that produces the second messenger cyclic GMP-AMP (cGAMP). cGAMP activates stimulator of interferon genes (STING), which initiates a signaling cascade leading to immune and inflammatory responses. This intricate molecular pathway plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis and progression of diverse respiratory ailments, including respiratory infection, lung cancer, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, and acute lung injury. Consequently, the cGAS-STING signaling pathway has emerged as a promising novel therapeutic target, opening up new avenues for the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory disorders. This review focuses on recent advances in our understanding of the cGAS-STING signaling pathway and its intricate involvement in respiratory system diseases.

Observation of Cabibbo-Suppressed Two-Body Hadronic Decays and Precision Mass Measurement of the Ω_{c}^{0} Baryon

The first observation of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed Ω_{c}^{0}→Ω^{-}K^{+} and Ω_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}π^{+} decays is reported, using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4  fb^{-1}, collected with the LHCb detector between 2016 and 2018. The branching fraction ratios are measured to be B(Ω_{c}^{0}→Ω^{-}K^{+})/B(Ω_{c}^{0}→Ω^{-}π^{+})=[6.08±0.51(stat)±0.40(syst)]%,B(Ω_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}π^{+})/B(Ω_{c}^{0}→Ω^{-}π^{+})=[15.81±0.87(stat)±0.44(syst)±0.16(ext)]%. In addition, using the Ω_{c}^{0}→Ω^{-}π^{+} decay channel, the Ω_{c}^{0} baryon mass is measured to be M(Ω_{c}^{0})=2695.28±0.07(stat)±0.27(syst)±0.30(ext)  MeV, improving the precision of the previous world average by a factor of 4.

Enhanced Production of Λ_{b}^{0} Baryons in High-Multiplicity pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

The production rate of Λ_{b}^{0} baryons relative to B^{0} mesons in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt[s]=13  TeV is measured by the LHCb experiment. The ratio of Λ_{b}^{0} to B^{0} production cross sections shows a significant dependence on both the transverse momentum and the measured charged-particle multiplicity. At low multiplicity, the ratio measured at LHCb is consistent with the value measured in e^{+}e^{-} collisions, and increases by a factor of ∼2 with increasing multiplicity. At relatively low transverse momentum, the ratio of Λ_{b}^{0} to B^{0} cross sections is higher than what is measured in e^{+}e^{-} collisions, but converges with the e^{+}e^{-} ratio as the momentum increases. These results imply that the evolution of heavy b quarks into final-state hadrons is influenced by the density of the hadronic environment produced in the collision. Comparisons with several models and implications for the mechanisms enforcing quark confinement are discussed.

Improved Measurement of CP Violation Parameters in B_{s}^{0}→J/ψK^{+}K^{-} Decays in the Vicinity of the ϕ(1020) Resonance

The decay-time-dependent CP asymmetry in B_{s}^{0}→J/ψ(→μ^{+}μ^{-})K^{+}K^{-} decays is measured using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6  fb^{-1}, collected with the LHCb detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Using a sample of approximately 349 000 B_{s}^{0} signal decays with an invariant K^{+}K^{-} mass in the vicinity of the ϕ(1020) resonance, the CP-violating phase ϕ_{s} is measured, along with the difference in decay widths of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the B_{s}^{0}-B[over ¯]_{s}^{0} system, ΔΓ_{s}, and the difference of the average B_{s}^{0} and B^{0} meson decay widths, Γ_{s}-Γ_{d}. The values obtained are ϕ_{s}=-0.039±0.022±0.006  rad, ΔΓ_{s}=0.0845±0.0044±0.0024  ps^{-1}, and Γ_{s}-Γ_{d}=-0.0056_{-0.0015}^{+0.0013}±0.0014  ps^{-1}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements to date and are consistent with expectations based on the Standard Model and with the previous LHCb analyses of this decay. These results are combined with previous independent LHCb measurements. The phase ϕ_{s} is also measured independently for each polarization state of the K^{+}K^{-} system and shows no evidence for polarization dependence.

Measurement of CP Violation in B^{0}→ψ(→ℓ^{+}ℓ^{-})K_{S}^{0}(→π^{+}π^{-}) Decays

A measurement of time-dependent CP violation in the decays of B^{0} and B[over ¯]^{0} mesons to the final states J/ψ(→μ^{+}μ^{-})K_{S}^{0}, ψ(2S)(→μ^{+}μ^{-})K_{S}^{0} and J/ψ(→e^{+}e^{-})K_{S}^{0} with K_{S}^{0}→π^{+}π^{-} is presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 6  fb^{-1} collected at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=13  TeV with the LHCb detector. The CP-violation parameters are measured to be S_{ψK_{S}^{0}}=0.717±0.013(stat)±0.008(syst) and C_{ψK_{S}^{0}}=0.008±0.012(stat)±0.003(syst). This measurement of S_{ψK_{S}^{0}} represents the most precise single measurement of the CKM angle β to date and is more precise than the current world average. In addition, measurements of the CP-violation parameters of the individual channels are reported and a combination with the LHCb Run 1 measurements is performed.

Development and validation of a nomogram to predict cervical lymph node metastasis in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

Background

Head and neck cancers are a heterogeneous, aggressive, and genetically complex collection of malignancies of the oral cavity, nasopharynx, oropharynx, hypopharynx, larynx, paranasal sinuses and salivary glands, which are difficult to treat. Regional lymph nodes metastasis is a significant poor prognosis factor for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Metastasis to the regional lymph nodes reduces the 5-year survival rate by 50% compared with that of patients with early-stage disease. Accurate evaluation of cervical lymph node is a vital component in the overall treatment plan for patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. However, current models are struggle to accurately to predict cervical lymph node metastasis. Here, we analyzed the clinical, imaging, and pathological data of 272 patients with HNSCC confirmed by postoperative pathology and sought to develop and validate a nomogram for prediction of lymph node metastasis in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

Methods

We retrospectively analyzed the clinical, imaging, and pathological data of 272 patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) confirmed by postoperative pathology at the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University from June 2017 to June 2021. Patients were randomly divided into the training and validation cohorts in a 3:1 ratio, and after screening risk factors by logistic regression, nomogram was developed for predicting lymph nodes metastasis, then the prediction model was verified by C-index, area under curve (AUC), and calibration curve.

Results

Of the 272 patients, seven variables were screened to establish the predictive model, including the differentiation degree of the tumor [95% confidence interval(CI):1.224~6.735, P=0.015], long-to-short axis ratio of the lymph nodes (95%CI: 0.019~0.217, P<0.001), uneven/circular enhancement (95%CI: 1.476~16.715, P=0.010), aggregation of lymph nodes (95%CI:1.373~10.849, P=0.010), inhomogeneous echo (95%CI: 1.337~23.389, P=0.018), unclear/absent medulla of lymph nodes (95%CI: 2.514~43.989, P=0.001), and rich blood flow (95%CI: 1.952~85.632, P=0.008). The C-index was 0.910, areas under the curve of training cohort and verification cohort were 0.953 and 0.938 respectively, indicating the discriminative ability of this nomogram. The calibration curve showed a favorable compliance between the prediction of the model and actual observations. The clinical decision curve showed this model is clinically useful and had better discriminative ability between 0.25 and 0.9 for the probability of cervical LNs metastasis.

Conclusions

We established a good prediction model for cervical lymph node metastasis in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patients which can provide reference value and auxiliary diagnosis for clinicians in making neck management decisions of HNSCC patients.

Comparing the clinical efficacy and safety of second-line targeted therapy and immunotherapy in patients with mid- to advanced stages of hepatocellular carcinoma - A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy and safety of second-line immunotherapy and targeted treatment in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

From January 2000 to January 2023, ProQuest, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, and the Cochrane Library databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using immunotherapy or targeted therapy as second-line therapy for mid-to-advanced stages of HCC. Overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), and adverse events (AEs) are all examples of measures of success.

RESULTS

This analysis included twenty Randomized Clinical Trials (RCTs) from phases II and III. Collective data revealed better OS with immunotherapy (HR = 0.79; 95% CI: 0.67, 0.93 vs. 0.85; 95% CI: 0.78, 0.92), while the targeted therapy played a more effective role in PFS (0.67; 95% CI: 0.56, 0.81). Also, the second-line immunotherapy had a lower odds ratio of AEs of grades 3-5 than the targeted therapy did (OR = 1.75; 95% CI = 0.89, 3.46).

CONCLUSIONS

Overall, it appears that targeted medication and immunotherapy as a second-line treatment strategy have generally improved substantially, as well as progression-free survival for patients with mid-to-advanced HCC. Although it is difficult to judge their efficiency, the occurrences of AEs were greater in targeted therapy compared to immunotherapy.

Observation of New Baryons in the Ξ_{b}^{-}π^{+}π^{-} and Ξ_{b}^{0}π^{+}π^{-} Systems

The first observation and study of two new baryonic structures in the final state Ξ_{b}^{0}π^{+}π^{-} and the confirmation of the Ξ_{b}(6100)^{-} state in the Ξ_{b}^{-}π^{+}π^{-} decay mode are reported using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9  fb^{-1}. In addition, the properties of the known Ξ_{b}^{*0}, Ξ_{b}^{'-} and Ξ_{b}^{*-} resonances are measured with improved precision. The new decay mode of the Ξ_{b}^{0} baryon to the Ξ_{c}^{+} π^{-} π^{+} π^{-} final state is observed and exploited for the first time in these measurements.

Precision Measurement of CP Violation in the Penguin-Mediated Decay B_{s}^{0}→ϕϕ

A flavor-tagged time-dependent angular analysis of the decay B_{s}^{0}→ϕϕ is performed using pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at the center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6  fb^{-1}. The CP-violating phase and direct CP-violation parameter are measured to be ϕ_{s}^{ss[over ¯]s}=-0.042±0.075±0.009  rad and |λ|=1.004±0.030±0.009, respectively, assuming the same values for all polarization states of the ϕϕ system. In these results, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These parameters are also determined separately for each polarization state, showing no evidence for polarization dependence. The results are combined with previous LHCb measurements using pp collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, yielding ϕ_{s}^{ss[over ¯]s}=-0.074±0.069  rad and |λ|=1.009±0.030. This is the most precise study of time-dependent CP violation in a penguin-dominated B meson decay. The results are consistent with CP symmetry and with the standard model predictions.

[Clinical study of antinib combined with radiotherapy in the treatment of third-line extensive small cell lung cancer]

Objective: To explore whether the survival benefit of the third-line extensive small-cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC) will be obtained by the combination of anlotinib and radiotherapy, and evaluate the safety of this treatment regimen. Methods: Twenty-seven patients with ES-SCLC who received third-line treatment with less than three metastatic organs at the Cancer Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University from November 2018 to July 2021 were collected and treated with radiotherapy based on anlotinib. Kaplan-Meier curve was used to estimate the overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS), descriptive statistical analysis was used to evaluate the safety, and European organisation for research and treatment of cancer quality of life questionnaire-core 30 (EORTC QLQ-C30) was used to evaluate the quality of life. Results: The follow-up cut-off date was July 1, 2021, and the follow-up time ranged from 4.8 to 31.0 months, with a median follow-up time of 10.2 months for the entire group. Among the 27 patients, 4 achieved partial remission, 17 had stable disease and 6 had progression of disease. The objective remission rate (ORR) was 14.8%, and the disease control rate (DCR) was 77.8%. Median PFS and the median OS were 5 months and 11 months, respectively. The most common adverse reactions included fatigue (33.3%, 9/27), anorexia (14.8%, 4/27), bleeding (14.8%, 4/27) and hand-foot syndrome (11.1%, 3/27). Most of them were grade 1 to grade 2, 3 cases were more than grade 3, and there was no grade 5 toxicity recorded. After radiotherapy combined with amlotinib treatment, patients showed improvement in general health, somatic functioning, social functioning, and emotional functioning (all P<0.05). Conclusion: For the third-line ES-SCLC patients, radiotherapy based on the anlotinib can significantly prolong their PFS and OS, and the adverse reactions can be tolerated.

Measurement of the Λ_{b}^{0}→Λ(1520)μ^{+}μ^{-} Differential Branching Fraction

The branching fraction of the rare decay Λ_{b}^{0}→Λ(1520)μ^{+}μ^{-} is measured for the first time, in the squared dimuon mass intervals q^{2}, excluding the J/ψ and ψ(2S) regions. The data sample analyzed was collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9  fb^{-1}. The result in the highest q^{2} interval, q^{2}>15.0  GeV^{2}/c^{4}, where theoretical predictions have the smallest model dependence, agrees with the predictions.

Observation of New Ω_{c}^{0} States Decaying to the Ξ_{c}^{+}K^{-} Final State

Two new excited states, Ω_{c}(3185)^{0} and Ω_{c}(3327)^{0}, are observed in the Ξ_{c}^{+}K^{-} invariant-mass spectrum using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9  fb^{-1}. Five previously observed excited Ω_{c}^{0} states are confirmed, namely Ω_{c}(3000)^{0}, Ω_{c}(3050)^{0}, Ω_{c}(3065)^{0}, Ω_{c}(3090)^{0}, and Ω_{c}(3119)^{0}. The masses and widths of these seven states are measured with the highest precision to date.

Evidence of a J/ψK_{S}^{0} Structure in B^{0}→J/ψϕK_{S}^{0} Decays

An amplitude analysis of B^{0}→J/ψϕK_{S}^{0} decays is performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9  fb^{-1}, collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. Evidence with a significance of 4.0 standard deviations of a structure in the J/ψK_{S}^{0} system, named T_{ψs1}^{θ}(4000)^{0}, is seen, with its mass and width measured to be 3991_{-10}^{+12} _{-17}^{+9}  MeV/c^{2} and 105_{-25}^{+29} _{-23}^{+17}  MeV, respectively, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The T_{ψs1}^{θ}(4000)^{0} state is likely to be the isospin partner of the T_{ψs1}^{θ}(4000)^{+} state, previously observed in the J/ψK^{+} system of the B^{+}→J/ψϕK^{+} decay. When isospin symmetry for the charged and neutral T_{ψs1}^{θ}(4000) states is assumed, the signal significance increases to 5.4 standard deviations.

Measurement of the Ratios of Branching Fractions R(D^{*}) and R(D^{0})

The ratios of branching fractions R(D^{*})≡B(B[over ¯]→D^{*}τ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{τ})/B(B[over ¯]→D^{*}μ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{μ}) and R(D^{0})≡B(B^{-}→D^{0}τ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{τ})/B(B^{-}→D^{0}μ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{μ}) are measured, assuming isospin symmetry, using a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to 3.0  fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. The tau lepton is identified in the decay mode τ^{-}→μ^{-}ν_{τ}ν[over ¯]_{μ}. The measured values are R(D^{*})=0.281±0.018±0.024 and R(D^{0})=0.441±0.060±0.066, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The correlation between these measurements is ρ=-0.43. The results are consistent with the current average of these quantities and are at a combined 1.9 standard deviations from the predictions based on lepton flavor universality in the standard model.

Measurement of the Time-Integrated CP Asymmetry in D^{0}→K^{-}K^{+} Decays

The time-integrated CP asymmetry in the Cabibbo-suppressed decay D^{0}→K^{-}K^{+} is measured using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.7  fb^{-1} collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the LHCb detector. The D^{0} mesons are required to originate from promptly produced D^{*+}→D^{0}π^{+} decays, and the charge of the companion pion is used to determine the flavor of the charm meson at production. The time-integrated CP asymmetry is measured to be A_{CP}(K^{-}K^{+})=[6.8±5.4±1.6]×10^{-4} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The direct CP asymmetries in D^{0}→K^{-}K^{+} and D^{0}→π^{-}π^{+} decays, a_{K^{-}K^{+}}^{d} and a_{π^{-}π^{+}}^{d}, are derived by combining A_{CP}(K^{-}K^{+}) with the time-integrated CP asymmetry difference, ΔA_{CP}=A_{CP}(K^{-}K^{+})-A_{CP}(π^{-}π^{+}), and other inputs, giving a_{K^{-}K^{+}}^{d}=(7.7±5.7)×10^{-4},a_{π^{-}π^{+}}^{d}=(23.2±6.1)×10^{-4},with a correlation coefficient corresponding to ρ=0.88. The compatibility of these results with CP symmetry is 1.4 and 3.8 standard deviations for D^{0}→K^{-}K^{+} and D^{0}→π^{-}π^{+} decays, respectively. This is the first evidence for direct CP violation in a specific D^{0} decay.

Measurement of the Branching Fractions B(B^{0}→pp[over ¯]pp[over ¯]) and B(B_{s}^{0}→pp[over ¯]pp[over ¯])

Searches for the rare hadronic decays B^{0}→pp[over ¯]pp[over ¯] and B_{s}^{0}→pp[over ¯]pp[over ¯] are performed using proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9  fb^{-1}. Significances of 9.3σ and 4.0σ, including statistical and systematic uncertainties, are obtained for the B^{0}→pp[over ¯]pp[over ¯] and B_{s}^{0}→pp[over ¯]pp[over ¯] signals, respectively. The branching fractions are measured relative to the topologically similar normalization decays B^{0}→J/ψ(→pp[over ¯])K^{*0}(→K^{+}π^{-}) and B_{s}^{0}→J/ψ(→pp[over ¯])⁢ϕ(→K^{+}K^{-}). The branching fractions are measured to be B(B^{0}→pp[over ¯]pp[over ¯])=(2.2±0.4±0.1±0.1)×10^{-8} and B(B_{s}^{0}→pp[over ¯]pp[over ¯])=(2.3±1.0±0.2±0.1)×10^{-8}. In these measurements, the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third one is due to the external branching fraction of the normalization channel.

Observation of a Resonant Structure near the D_{s}^{+}D_{s}^{-} Threshold in the B^{+}→D_{s}^{+}D_{s}^{-}K^{+} Decay

An amplitude analysis of the B^{+}→D_{s}^{+}D_{s}^{-}K^{+} decay is carried out to study for the first time its intermediate resonant contributions, using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. A near-threshold peaking structure, referred to as X(3960), is observed in the D_{s}^{+}D_{s}^{-} invariant-mass spectrum with significance greater than 12 standard deviations. The mass, width, and the quantum numbers of the structure are measured to be 3956±5±10  MeV, 43±13±8  MeV, and J^{PC}=0^{++}, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The properties of the new structure are consistent with recent theoretical predictions for a state composed of cc[over ¯]ss[over ¯] quarks. Evidence for an additional structure is found around 4140 MeV in the D_{s}^{+}D_{s}^{-} invariant mass, which might be caused either by a new resonance with the 0^{++} assignment or by a J/ψϕ↔D_{s}^{+}D_{s}^{-} coupled-channel effect.

Test of Lepton Universality in b→sℓ^{+}ℓ^{-} Decays

The first simultaneous test of muon-electron universality using B^{+}→K^{+}ℓ^{+}ℓ^{-} and B^{0}→K^{*0}ℓ^{+}ℓ^{-} decays is performed, in two ranges of the dilepton invariant-mass squared, q^{2}. The analysis uses beauty mesons produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9  fb^{-1}. Each of the four lepton universality measurements reported is either the first in the given q^{2} interval or supersedes previous LHCb measurements. The results are compatible with the predictions of the Standard Model.

First Observation of a Doubly Charged Tetraquark and Its Neutral Partner

A combined amplitude analysis is performed for the decays B^{0}→D[over ¯]^{0}D_{s}^{+}π^{-} and B^{+}→D^{-}D_{s}^{+}π^{+}, which are related by isospin symmetry. The analysis is based on data collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. The full data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9  fb^{-1}. Two new resonant states with masses of 2.908±0.011±0.020  GeV and widths of 0.136±0.023±0.013  GeV are observed, which decay to D_{s}^{+}π^{+} and D_{s}^{+}π^{-} respectively. The former state indicates the first observation of a doubly charged open-charm tetraquark state with minimal quark content [cs[over ¯]ud[over ¯]], and the latter state is a neutral tetraquark composed of [cs[over ¯]u[over ¯]d] quarks. Both states are found to have spin-parity of 0^{+}, and their resonant parameters are consistent with each other, which suggests that they belong to an isospin triplet.

Search for Rare Decays of D^{0} Mesons into Two Muons

A search for the very rare D^{0}→μ^{+}μ^{-} decay is performed using data collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9  fb^{-1}. The search is optimized for D^{0} mesons from D^{*+}→D^{0}π^{+} decays but is also sensitive to D^{0} mesons from other sources. No evidence for an excess of events over the expected background is observed. An upper limit on the branching fraction of this decay is set at B(D^{0}→μ^{+}μ^{-})<3.1×10^{-9} at a 90% C.L. This represents the world's most stringent limit, constraining models of physics beyond the standard model.

Observation of a J/ψΛ Resonance Consistent with a Strange Pentaquark Candidate in B^{-}→J/ψΛp[over ¯] Decays

An amplitude analysis of B^{-}→J/ψΛp[over ¯] decays is performed using 4400 signal candidates selected on a data sample of pp collisions recorded at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9  fb^{-1}. A narrow resonance in the J/ψΛ system, consistent with a pentaquark candidate with strangeness, is observed with high significance. The mass and the width of this new state are measured to be 4338.2±0.7±0.4  MeV and 7.0±1.2±1.3  MeV, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The spin is determined to be 1/2 and negative parity is preferred. Because of the small Q-value of the reaction, the most precise single measurement of the B^{-} mass to date, 5279.44±0.05±0.07  MeV, is obtained.

Identification of a six-gene signature to predict survival and immunotherapy effectiveness of gastric cancer

Background

Gastric cancer (GC) ranks as the fifth most prevalent malignancy and the second leading cause of oncologic mortality globally. Despite staging guidelines and standard treatment protocols, significant heterogeneity exists in patient survival and response to therapy for GC. Thus, an increasing number of research have examined prognostic models recently for screening high-risk GC patients.

Methods

We studied DEGs between GC tissues and adjacent non-tumor tissues in GEO and TCGA datasets. Then the candidate DEGs were further screened in TCGA cohort through univariate Cox regression analyses. Following this, LASSO regression was utilized to generate prognostic model of DEGs. We used the ROC curve, Kaplan-Meier curve, and risk score plot to evaluate the signature's performance and prognostic power. ESTIMATE, xCell, and TIDE algorithm were used to explore the relationship between the risk score and immune landscape relationship. As a final step, nomogram was developed in this study, utilizing both clinical characteristics and a prognostic model.

Results

There were 3211 DEGs in TCGA, 2371 DEGs in GSE54129, 627 DEGs in GSE66229, and 329 DEGs in GSE64951 selected as candidate genes and intersected with to obtain DEGs. In total, the 208 DEGs were further screened in TCGA cohort through univariate Cox regression analyses. Following this, LASSO regression was utilized to generate prognostic model of 6 DEGs. External validation showed favorable predictive efficacy. We studied interaction between risk models, immunoscores, and immune cell infiltrate based on six-gene signature. The high-risk group exhibited significantly elevated ESTIMATE score, immunescore, and stromal score relative to low-risk group. The proportions of CD4⁺ memory T cells, CD8⁺ naive T cells, common lymphoid progenitor, plasmacytoid dentritic cell, gamma delta T cell, and B cell plasma were significantly enriched in low-risk group. According to TIDE, the TIDE scores, exclusion scores and dysfunction scores for low-risk group were lower than those for high-risk group. As a final step, nomogram was developed in this study, utilizing both clinical characteristics and a prognostic model.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we discovered a 6 gene signature to forecast GC patients' OS. This risk signature proves to be a valuable clinical predictive tool for guiding clinical practice.

Degradation of helicase-like transcription factor (HLTF) by β-TrCP promotes hepatocarcinogenesis via activation of the p62/mTOR axis

Helicase-like transcription factor (HLTF) has been found to be involved in the maintenance of genome stability and tumour suppression, but whether its downregulation in cancers is associated with posttranslational regulation remains unclear. Here, we observed that HLTF was significantly downregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissues and positively associated with the survival of HCC patients. Mechanistically, the decreased expression of HLTF in HCC was attributed to elevated β-TrCP-mediated ubiquitination and degradation. Knockdown of HLTF enhanced p62 transcriptional activity and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) activation, leading to HCC tumourigenesis. Inhibition of mTOR effectively blocked β-TrCP overexpression- or HLTF knockdown-mediated HCC tumourigenesis and metastasis. Furthermore, in clinical tissues, decreased HLTF expression was positively correlated with elevated expression of β-TrCP, p62, or p-mTOR in HCC patients. Overall, our data not only uncover new roles of HLTF in HCC cell proliferation and metastasis, but also reveal a novel posttranslational modification of HLTF by β-TrCP, indicating that the β-TrCP/HLTF/p62/mTOR axis may be a new oncogenic driver involved in HCC development. This finding provides a potential therapeutic strategy for HCC patients by targeting the β-TrCP/HLTF/p62/mTOR axis.

New advances into cisplatin resistance in head and neck squamous carcinoma: Mechanisms and therapeutic aspects

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) arises from the interplay of multiple factors, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and viral infections. Cisplatin-based concurrent radiotherapy regimens represent the first-line treatment for advanced HNSCC cases. However, cisplatin resistance significantly contributes to poor prognoses in HNSCC patients, making it crucial to unravel the underlying mechanisms to overcome this resistance. The complexity of cisplatin resistance in HNSCC involves cancer stem cells, autophagy, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, drug efflux, and metabolic reprogramming. Recent advances in nanodrug delivery systems, combined with existing small-molecule inhibitors and innovative genetic technologies, have opened new therapeutic avenues for addressing cisplatin resistance in HNSCC. This review systematically summarizes research progress from the past five years on cisplatin resistance in HNSCC, with a particular focus on the roles of cancer stem cells and autophagy. Additionally, potential future treatment strategies to overcome cisplatin resistance are discussed, including the targeting of cancer stem cells or autophagy through nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems. Furthermore, the review highlights the prospects and challenges associated with nanodelivery platforms in addressing cisplatin resistance in HNSCC.

High-precision cavity-enhanced spectroscopy for studying the H2-Ar collisions and interactions

Information about molecular collisions is encoded in the shapes of collision-perturbed molecular resonances. This connection between molecular interactions and line shapes is most clearly seen in simple systems, such as the molecular hydrogen perturbed by a noble gas atom. We study the H₂-Ar system by means of highly accurate absorption spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. On the one hand, we use the cavity-ring-down-spectroscopy technique to record the shapes of the S(1) 3-0 line of molecular hydrogen perturbed by argon. On the other hand, we simulate the shapes of this line using ab initio quantum-scattering calculations performed on our accurate H₂-Ar potential energy surface (PES). In order to validate the PES and the methodology of quantum-scattering calculations separately from the model of velocity-changing collisions, we measured the spectra in experimental conditions in which the influence of the latter is relatively minor. In these conditions, our theoretical collision-perturbed line shapes reproduce the raw experimental spectra at the percent level. However, the collisional shift, δ₀, differs from the experimental value by 20%. Compared to other line-shape parameters, collisional shift displays much higher sensitivity to various technical aspects of the computational methodology. We identify the contributors to this large error and find the inaccuracies of the PES to be the dominant factor. With regard to the quantum scattering methodology, we demonstrate that treating the centrifugal distortion in a simple, approximate manner is sufficient to obtain the percent-level accuracy of collisional spectra.

Accelerating Electrochemical Water Oxidation Activity by Tailoring Morphology and Electronic Structure of Nickel Organic Framework Nanoarrays with a Fe Etching Effect

Fe-mediated nickel organic framework nanoarrays (NiFe-MOFs NAs) on carbon cloth were successfully constructed from ultrathin nanosheets via an etching effect. This strategy also combined the dissolution and coordination effect of acidic ligand (2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid, NDC) to a self-sacrificial template of Ni(OH)₂ NAs. Benefiting from the strong Fe etching effect, dense and thick brick-like Ni-NDC nanoplates were tailored into loose and ultrathin NiFe-NDC nanosheets with abundant squamous nanostructures, which were still tightly attached to carbon cloth. As a consequence, more coordinatively unsaturated metal sites (CUMSs) that served as active centers were exposed to accelerate oxygen production. Meanwhile, the electronic structure of active Ni centers was modulated by the incorporation of Fe atoms. The charge density redistribution between Ni and Fe ultimately optimized the energy barrier of the adsorption/desorption of oxygenated intermediates, promoting the kinetics for water oxidation.

Observation of the delineation of the target volume of radiotherapy in adult-type diffuse gliomas after temozolomide-based chemoradiotherapy: analysis of recurrence patterns and predictive factors

BACKGROUND

Radiation therapy is the cornerstone of treatment for adult-type diffuse gliomas, but recurrences are inevitable. Our study assessed the prognosis and recurrence pattern of different radiotherapy volumes after temozolomide-based chemoradiation in our institution.

METHODS

The treatment plans were classified into two groups, the plan 1 intentionally involved the entire edema area while plan 2 did not. Retrospectively investigate the differences in outcomes of 118 adult-type diffuse gliomas patients between these two treatment plans. Then, patients who underwent relapse were selected to analyze their recurrence patterns. Continuous dynamic magnetic resonance images (MRI) were collected to categorized the recurrence patterns into central, in-field, marginal, distant, and cerebrospinal fluid dissemination (CSF-d) recurrence. Finally, the clinical and molecular characteristics which influenced progression were analyzed.

RESULTS

Plan 1 (n = 63) showed a median progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) of 9.5 and 26.4 months while plan 2 (n = 55) showed a median PFS and OS of 9.4 and 36.5 months (p = 0.418; p = 0.388). Treatment target volume had no effect on the outcome in patients with adult-type diffuse gliomas. And there was no difference in radiation toxicity (p = 0.388). Among the 90 relapsed patients, a total of 58 (64.4%) patients had central recurrence, 10 (11.1%) patients had in-field recurrence, 3 (3.3%) patients had marginal recurrence, 11 (12.2.%) patients had distant recurrence, and 8 (8.9%) patients had CSF-d recurrence. By treatment plans, the recurrence patterns were similar and there was no significant difference in survival. Reclassifying the progression pattern into local and non-local groups, we observed that oligodendroglioma (n = 10) all relapsed in local and no difference in PFS and OS between the two groups (p > 0.05). Multivariable analysis showed that subventricular zone (SVZ) involvement was the independent risk factor for non-local recurrence in patients with GBM (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

In our study, deliberately including or not the entire edema had no impact on prognosis and recurrence. Patients with varied recurrence patterns had diverse clinical and genetic features.

Defect Engineering Modulated Iron Single Atoms with Assist of Layered Clay for Enhanced Advanced Oxidation Processes

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) feature maximum atomic utilization efficiency; however, the loading amount, dispersibility, synthesis cost, and regulation of the electronic structure are factors that need to be considered in water treatment. In this study, kaolinite, a natural layered clay mineral, is applied as the support for g-C₃ N₄ and single Fe atoms (FeSA-NGK). The FeSA-NGK composite exhibits an impressive degradation performance toward the target pollutant (>98% degradation rate in 10 min), and catalytic stability across consecutive runs (90% reactivity maintained after three runs in a fluidized-bed catalytic unit) under peroxymonosulfate (PMS)/visible light (Vis) synergetic system. The introduction of kaolinite promotes the loading amount of single Fe atoms (2.57 wt.%), which is a 14.2% increase compared to using a bare catalyst without kaolinite, and improved the concentration of N vacancies, thereby optimizing the regulation of the electronic structure of the single Fe atoms. It is discovered that the single Fe atoms successfully occupied five coordinated N atoms and combined with a neighboring N vacancy. Consequently, this regulated the local electronic structure of single Fe atoms, which drives the electrons of N atoms to accumulate on the Fe centers. This study opens an avenue for the design of clay-based SACs for water purification.

SrB4O7:Sm2+ fluorescence improves the accuracy of temperature measurements in externally heated diamond anvil cells

The sample temperature in an externally heated diamond anvil cell (EHDAC) is generally measured by a thermocouple fixed to the pavilions of diamond anvils, ignoring the temperature difference between the thermocouple and the sample. However, the measured temperature depends strongly on the placement of the thermocouple, thus seriously reducing the accuracy of the temperature measurement and hindering the use of EHDAC in experiments requiring precise temperature measurements, such as high-pressure melting and phase-diagram investigations. In this study, the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the 0-0 fluorescence line of strontium borate doped with bivalent samarium ions (SrBO₄:Sm²⁺, SBO) is found to be highly sensitive to temperature and responds extremely rapidly to small temperature fluctuations, which makes it an excellent temperature indicator. We propose herein a precise method to measure temperature that involves measuring the FWHM of the 0-0 fluorescence line of SBO. This method is used to correct the temperature discrepancy between the thermocouple and the sample in an EHDAC. These corrections significantly improve the accuracy of temperature measurements in EHDACs. The accuracy of this method is verified by measuring the melting point of tin at ambient pressure. We also use this method to produce a tentative elementary phase diagram of tin up to 109 GPa and 495 K. This method facilitates high-pressure, high-temperature experiments demanding accurate temperature measurements in various disciplines. The study also discusses, in general, the experimental approach to measuring temperature.

Efficient peroxymonosulfate activation of immobilized Fe-N-C catalyst on ceramsite for the continuous flow removal of phenol

Nowadays, developing environmentally friendly catalysts with both low cost and high efficiency was still a challenge in actual organic wastewater purification. Herein, the Fe-N-C catalyst was successfully immobilized on solid waste derived ceramsite for efficient degradation of phenol under continuous flow conditions by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). After the introduction of ceramsite, the microstructure of Fe-N-C catalyst was changed from granular structure to worm-like structure, promoting the dispersion of the nanoscale catalyst and providing more reactive sites. Therefore, the phenol removal rate and mineralization rate of the obtained 0.5FNNC within 30 min were up to 96.79% and 71.79%, respectively. In addition, the degradation rate of the optimal composite (0.5FNNC)/PMS system was about 4.06 times higher than that of bare Fe-N-C/PMS system. Intriguingly, the Fe ion leaching from 0.5FNNC during the degradation reaction was significantly lower than bare Fe-N-C owing to the strong catalyst-support chemical bonding. Based on electron paramagnetic resonance, quenching experiments, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and electrochemical analysis, it was indicated that the non-radical processes (¹O₂ and high valent iron-oxo species) should be responsible for the phenol degradation. Meanwhile, the possible phenol degradation pathways were proposed, and the intermediates were evaluated for ecotoxicity by ECOSAR. Finally, a preliminary economic analysis of this process was carried out. Overall, this work would provide a new strategy for the construction of ceramsite based multi-pore composite catalysts and the large-scale application of persulfate oxidation technology in organic wastewater treatment.

High-efficient mineralization of formaldehyde by three-dimensional "PIZZA"-like bismuth molybdate-titania/diatomite composite

The application of TiO₂-based photocatalysts in air pollution control has attracted much attention thanks to their advantageous green and sustainable performance. However, how to improve the degradation efficiency under visible light is still challenging. Herein, we report a ternary three-dimensional "PIZZA"-like Bi₂MoO₆-TiO₂/diatomite (BTD) composite with high-efficient mineralization and recycling performance towards gaseous formaldehyde (HCHO) under visible light. The high-efficient adsorption-photocatalysis collaborative system with intimate interface combination is successfully established among Bi₂MoO₆ (BMO), TiO₂ and diatomite. The HCHO mineralization rate constant of BTD-1:2 composite is up to around 4.03 times and 2.18 times higher than those of bare BMO and binary Bi₂MoO₆-TiO₂ composite, respectively. It is indicated that the introduction of diatomite increases active sites and plays the vital role in the improvement of photocatalysis. In addition, the photogenerated holes (h⁺) and hydroxyl radical (OH) are proved to be the main active species for HCHO mineralization. Furthermore, there is a competitive adsorption relationship between water (H₂O) molecules and HCHO molecules, and both H₂O molecules and oxygen (O₂) molecules participated in the reaction of HCHO mineralization based on in-situ DRIFTs spectra analysis. Our work would give a new perspective on gaseous HCHO purification.

Fano-like Resonance due to Interference with Distant Transitions

Narrow optical resonances of atoms or molecules have immense significance in various precision measurements, such as testing fundamental physics and the generation of primary frequency standards. In these studies, accurate transition centers derived from fitting the measured spectra are demanded, which critically rely on the knowledge of spectral line profiles. Here, we propose a new mechanism of Fano-like resonance induced by distant discrete levels and experimentally verify it with Doppler-free spectroscopy of vibration-rotational transitions of CO_{2}. The observed spectrum has an asymmetric profile and its amplitude increases quadratically with the probe laser power. Our results facilitate a broad range of topics based on narrow transitions.

A case report of pulmonary combined small cell carcinoma with enteric adenocarcinoma

Background

Combined small cell lung cancer (CSCLC) is rarely reported, which accounting for only 2% to 5% of all lung cancers. And enteric adenocarcinoma is also a rare subtype of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose histomorphology is very similar to lung metastatic colorectal cancer.

Case Description

We report a case with both small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and enteric adenocarcinoma for the first time. The patient was admitted to our hospital due to the left lung mass after a routine examination. She underwent computed tomography scan and needle biopsy, which showed the tumor consisted of two different components (70% SCLC and 30% enteric adenocarcinoma). The mixed density nodules were also observed in the right lung's lower lobe, and positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) showed an increase of standard uptake value (SUV) greater than 2.5 in the right lung. Imaging and pathology experts agreed that the nodules of right lung were metastatic lesions after multi-disciplinary treatment (MDT). Considering the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) p.L861Q mutation, the patient received gefitinib and EP chemotherapy, and she responded well to the combination therapy. At last follow-up, the progression-free survival (PFS) reached 11 months, and the adverse effects were clinically acceptable and tolerable.

Conclusions

This case report provides direct evidence for EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) and EP chemotherapy is effective and useful in the treatment of CSCLC patients with enteric adenocarcinoma.

PIWI/piRNA-mediated regulation of signaling pathways in cell apoptosis

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to summarize the role of PIWIs/piRNAs in cell apoptosis through multiple signaling pathways. The PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) are among the small non-coding RNAs (sncRNAs) and are mainly expressed in germline cells. PIWI protein is the key to the biogenesis of piRNA. With the deepening of research in recent years, the PIWIs/piRNAs are expressed in a tissue-specific way in somatic cells outside the germline. In addition, researchers have found that the PIWIs/piRNAs play a regulatory role in cell apoptosis, proliferation, and necrosis by regulating key signaling pathways, such as PI3K/Akt signaling pathway, STAT signaling pathway, TGF-β signaling pathway, and Fas signaling pathway at the transcriptional or post-transcriptional level. However, the PIWIs/piRNAs' role in cell apoptosis and its underlying mechanisms are still not fully understood. This study reviews the regulatory functions of PIWIs/piRNAs in apoptosis from the perspective of the signal pathway.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This study is a narrative review. PubMed and MEDLINE were used as the primary sources to search the following keywords: PIWI/piRNAs, signal pathway, pro-apoptotic, anti-apoptotic, and signaling pathway.

RESULTS

PIWIs/piRNAs modulated pro-apoptotic or anti-apoptotic effects in a variety of cells: PIWIs/piRNAs through PI3K/Akt signaling pathway, STAT signaling pathway, TGF-β signaling pathway, and Fas signaling pathway for pro-apoptotic or anti-apoptotic effects in cells.

CONCLUSIONS

Apoptosis is a basic biological phenomenon of cell death, and it also has a great significance and complex molecular biological mechanisms. PIWI/piRNAs are closely related to various types of diseases and play a pro-apoptotic or anti-apoptotic role through the following pathways: PI3K/Akt signaling, STAT signaling, TGF-β signaling, and Fas signaling pathways.

Introducing a Synergistic Ligand Containing an Exotic Metal in Metal-Organic Framework Nanoarrays Enabling Superior Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation Performance

Designing and fabricating well-aligned metal-organic framework nanoarrays (MOF NAs) with high electrocatalytic activity and durability for water oxidation at large current density remain huge challenges. Here the vertical NiFc-MOF NAs constructed from agaric-like nanosheets were fabricated by introducing a ligand containing an exotic Fe atom to coordinate with Ni ion using Ni(OH)₂ NAs as a self-sacrificing template. The NiFc-MOF NAs exhibited superior water oxidation performance with a very low overpotential of 161 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm^-2. Chronoamperometry was tested at an overpotential of 250 mV, which delivered an initial industrial-grade current density of 702 mA cm^-2 and still remained at 694 mA cm^-2 after 24 h. Furthermore, it possessed fast reaction kinetics with a small Tafel slope of 29.5 mV dec^-1. The superior electrocatalytic performance can be ascribed to the structural advantage of vertically grown agaric-like NAs and the synergistic electron coupling between Ni and Fe atoms, namely, electron transfer from Ni to Fe atoms in NiFc-MOF NAs. The exposed density and valence state of active Ni sites were synchronously increased. Furthermore, the energy barrier for the adsorption/desorption of oxygenated intermediates was ultimately optimized for water oxidation. This work provides a novelty orientation to accelerate electrocatalytic performance of MOF NAs by introducing self-sacrificing templates containing one metal and synergistic ligand containing dissimilar metal.

Structure Characterization and Impact Effect of Al-Cu Graded Materials Prepared by Tape Casting

With the need of developing new materials, exploring new phenomenon, and discovering new mechanisms under extreme conditions, the response of materials to high-pressure compression attract more attention. However, the high-pressure state deviating from the Hugoniot line is difficult to realize by conventional experiments. Gas gun launching graded materials could reach the state. In our work, the corresponding Al-Cu composites and graded materials are prepared by tape casting and hot-pressing sintering. The microstructure and the acoustic impedance of the corresponding Al-Cu composites are analyzed to explain the impact behavior of Al-Cu graded materials. Computed tomographic testing and three-dimension surface profilometry machine results demonstrated well-graded structure and parallelism of the graded material. Al-Cu GMs with good parallelism are used to impact the Al-LiF target at 2.3 km/s using a two-stage light-gas gun, with an initial shock impact of 20.6 GPa and ramping until 27.2 GPa, deviating from the Hugoniot line.
