Photocatalytic Upgrading of Polylactic Acid Waste into Alanine under Mild Conditions

Polylactic acid (PLA) has attracted increasing interest as a sustainable plastic because it can be degraded into CO2 and H2O in nature. However, this process is sluggish, and even worse, it is a CO2-emitting and carbon resource waste process. Therefore, it is highly urgent to develop a novel strategy for recycling post-consumer PLA to achieve a circular plastic economy. Herein, we report a one-pot photoreforming route for the efficient and selective amination of PLA waste into value-added alanine using CoP/CdS catalysts under mild conditions. Results show the alanine production rate can reach up to 2.4 mmol gcat -1 h-1, with a high selectivity (>75 %) and excellent stability. Time-resolved transient absorption spectra (TAS) reveal that CoP can rapidly extract photogenerated electrons from CdS to accelerate proton reduction, favoring hole-dominated PLA oxidation to coproduce alanine. This study offers an appealing way for upcycling PLA waste and creates new opportunities for green synthesis of amino acids.

Quantum phase synchronization via exciton-vibrational energy dissipation sustains long-lived coherence in photosynthetic antennas

The lifetime of electronic coherences found in photosynthetic antennas is known to be too short to match the energy transfer time, rendering the coherent energy transfer mechanism inactive. Exciton-vibrational coherence time in excitonic dimers which consist of two chromophores coupled by excitation transfer interaction, can however be much longer. Uncovering the mechanism for sustained coherences in a noisy biological environment is challenging, requiring the use of simpler model systems as proxies. Here, via two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy experiments, we present compelling evidence for longer exciton-vibrational coherence time in the allophycocyanin trimer, containing excitonic dimers, compared to isolated pigments. This is attributed to the quantum phase synchronization of the resonant vibrational collective modes of the dimer, where the anti-symmetric modes, coupled to excitonic states with fast dephasing, are dissipated. The decoupled symmetric counterparts are subject to slower energy dissipation. The resonant modes have a predicted nearly 50% reduction in the vibrational amplitudes, and almost zero amplitude in the corresponding dynamical Stokes shift spectrum compared to the isolated pigments. Our findings provide insights into the mechanisms for protecting coherences against the noisy environment.

Pseudo-nanostructure and trapped-hole release induce high thermoelectric performance in PbTe

Thermoelectric materials can realize direct and mutual conversion between electricity and heat. However, developing a strategy to improve high thermoelectric performance is challenging because of strongly entangled electrical and thermal transport properties. We demonstrate a case in which both pseudo-nanostructures of vacancy clusters and dynamic charge-carrier regulation of trapped-hole release have been achieved in p-type lead telluride-based materials, enabling the simultaneous regulations of phonon and charge carrier transports. We realized a peak zT value up to 2.8 at 850 kelvin and an average zT value of 1.65 at 300 to 850 kelvin. We also achieved an energy conversion efficiency of ~15.5% at a temperature difference of 554 kelvin in a segmented module. Our demonstration shows promise for mid-temperature thermoelectrics across a range of different applications.

Porphyrin-Sensitizers and Anthracene-Annihilators Built in Isostructural Frameworks for Investigating Triplet-Triplet Annihilation Upconversion

In this study, four isostructural pillar-layered frameworks were constructed using a porphyrin layer and an anthracene pillar, which served as the sensitizer and annihilator, respectively, in the triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) system. Framework 1 demonstrated the highest upconversion quantum yield of 1.01%. Additionally, 1 and 2 also exhibited down-conversion fluorescence resulting from the porphyrin component. A twist intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state was observed in the bianthracene chromophore of 2, resulting in transient rotation of two anthracene rings and red-shifted emission. Both computational studies and experiments confirmed the transition from a locally excited state to a TICT state upon the inclusion of polar guest molecules into the framework.

Single-Site Ni-Grafted TiO2 with Diverse Coordination Environments for Visible-Light Hydrogen Production

Solar hydrogen production at a high efficiency holds the significant importance in the age of energy crisis, while the micro-environment manipulation of active sites on photocatalysts plays a profound role in enhancing the catalytic performance. In this work, a series of well-defined single-site Ni-grafted TiO2 photocatalysts with unique and specific coordination environments, 2,2'-bipyridine-Ni-O-TiO2 (T-Ni Bpy) and 2-Phenylpyridine-Ni-O-TiO2 (T-Ni Phpy), were constructed with the methods of surface organometallic chemistry combined with surface ligand exchange for visible-light-induced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). A prominent rate of 33.82 μmol ⋅ g-1  ⋅ h-1 and a turnover frequency of 0.451 h-1 for Ni are achieved over the optimal catalyst T-Ni Bpy for HER, 260-fold higher than those of Ni-O-TiO2 . Fewer electrons trapped oxygen vacancies and a larger portion of long-lived photogenerated electrons (>3 ns, ~52.9 %), which were demonstrated by the electron paramagnetic resonance and femtosecond transient IR absorption, correspond to the photocatalytic HER activity over the T-Ni Bpy. The number of long-lived free electrons injected from the Ni photoabsorber to the conduction band of TiO2 is one of the determining factors for achieving the excellent HER activity.

Effects of empagliflozin on progression of chronic kidney disease: a prespecified secondary analysis from the empa-kidney trial

BACKGROUND

Sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors reduce progression of chronic kidney disease and the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in a wide range of patients. However, their effects on kidney disease progression in some patients with chronic kidney disease are unclear because few clinical kidney outcomes occurred among such patients in the completed trials. In particular, some guidelines stratify their level of recommendation about who should be treated with SGLT2 inhibitors based on diabetes status and albuminuria. We aimed to assess the effects of empagliflozin on progression of chronic kidney disease both overall and among specific types of participants in the EMPA-KIDNEY trial.

METHODS

EMPA-KIDNEY, a randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial, was conducted at 241 centres in eight countries (Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, the UK, and the USA), and included individuals aged 18 years or older with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of 20 to less than 45 mL/min per 1·73 m2, or with an eGFR of 45 to less than 90 mL/min per 1·73 m2 with a urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (uACR) of 200 mg/g or higher. We explored the effects of 10 mg oral empagliflozin once daily versus placebo on the annualised rate of change in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR slope), a tertiary outcome. We studied the acute slope (from randomisation to 2 months) and chronic slope (from 2 months onwards) separately, using shared parameter models to estimate the latter. Analyses were done in all randomly assigned participants by intention to treat. EMPA-KIDNEY is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03594110.

FINDINGS

Between May 15, 2019, and April 16, 2021, 6609 participants were randomly assigned and then followed up for a median of 2·0 years (IQR 1·5-2·4). Prespecified subgroups of eGFR included 2282 (34·5%) participants with an eGFR of less than 30 mL/min per 1·73 m2, 2928 (44·3%) with an eGFR of 30 to less than 45 mL/min per 1·73 m2, and 1399 (21·2%) with an eGFR 45 mL/min per 1·73 m2 or higher. Prespecified subgroups of uACR included 1328 (20·1%) with a uACR of less than 30 mg/g, 1864 (28·2%) with a uACR of 30 to 300 mg/g, and 3417 (51·7%) with a uACR of more than 300 mg/g. Overall, allocation to empagliflozin caused an acute 2·12 mL/min per 1·73 m2 (95% CI 1·83-2·41) reduction in eGFR, equivalent to a 6% (5-6) dip in the first 2 months. After this, it halved the chronic slope from -2·75 to -1·37 mL/min per 1·73 m2 per year (relative difference 50%, 95% CI 42-58). The absolute and relative benefits of empagliflozin on the magnitude of the chronic slope varied significantly depending on diabetes status and baseline levels of eGFR and uACR. In particular, the absolute difference in chronic slopes was lower in patients with lower baseline uACR, but because this group progressed more slowly than those with higher uACR, this translated to a larger relative difference in chronic slopes in this group (86% [36-136] reduction in the chronic slope among those with baseline uACR <30 mg/g compared with a 29% [19-38] reduction for those with baseline uACR ≥2000 mg/g; ptrend<0·0001).

INTERPRETATION

Empagliflozin slowed the rate of progression of chronic kidney disease among all types of participant in the EMPA-KIDNEY trial, including those with little albuminuria. Albuminuria alone should not be used to determine whether to treat with an SGLT2 inhibitor.

Impact of primary kidney disease on the effects of empagliflozin in patients with chronic kidney disease: secondary analyses of the EMPA-KIDNEY trial

BACKGROUND

The EMPA-KIDNEY trial showed that empagliflozin reduced the risk of the primary composite outcome of kidney disease progression or cardiovascular death in patients with chronic kidney disease mainly through slowing progression. We aimed to assess how effects of empagliflozin might differ by primary kidney disease across its broad population.

METHODS

EMPA-KIDNEY, a randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial, was conducted at 241 centres in eight countries (Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, the UK, and the USA). Patients were eligible if their estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was 20 to less than 45 mL/min per 1·73 m2, or 45 to less than 90 mL/min per 1·73 m2 with a urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (uACR) of 200 mg/g or higher at screening. They were randomly assigned (1:1) to 10 mg oral empagliflozin once daily or matching placebo. Effects on kidney disease progression (defined as a sustained ≥40% eGFR decline from randomisation, end-stage kidney disease, a sustained eGFR below 10 mL/min per 1·73 m2, or death from kidney failure) were assessed using prespecified Cox models, and eGFR slope analyses used shared parameter models. Subgroup comparisons were performed by including relevant interaction terms in models. EMPA-KIDNEY is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03594110.

FINDINGS

Between May 15, 2019, and April 16, 2021, 6609 participants were randomly assigned and followed up for a median of 2·0 years (IQR 1·5-2·4). Prespecified subgroupings by primary kidney disease included 2057 (31·1%) participants with diabetic kidney disease, 1669 (25·3%) with glomerular disease, 1445 (21·9%) with hypertensive or renovascular disease, and 1438 (21·8%) with other or unknown causes. Kidney disease progression occurred in 384 (11·6%) of 3304 patients in the empagliflozin group and 504 (15·2%) of 3305 patients in the placebo group (hazard ratio 0·71 [95% CI 0·62-0·81]), with no evidence that the relative effect size varied significantly by primary kidney disease (pheterogeneity=0·62). The between-group difference in chronic eGFR slopes (ie, from 2 months to final follow-up) was 1·37 mL/min per 1·73 m2 per year (95% CI 1·16-1·59), representing a 50% (42-58) reduction in the rate of chronic eGFR decline. This relative effect of empagliflozin on chronic eGFR slope was similar in analyses by different primary kidney diseases, including in explorations by type of glomerular disease and diabetes (p values for heterogeneity all >0·1).

INTERPRETATION

In a broad range of patients with chronic kidney disease at risk of progression, including a wide range of non-diabetic causes of chronic kidney disease, empagliflozin reduced risk of kidney disease progression. Relative effect sizes were broadly similar irrespective of the cause of primary kidney disease, suggesting that SGLT2 inhibitors should be part of a standard of care to minimise risk of kidney failure in chronic kidney disease.

Safety and Efficacy of Anlotinib Hydrochloride Plus Temozolomide in Patients with Recurrent Glioblastoma

PURPOSE

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a highly vascularized tumor with few treatment options after disease recurrence. Here, we report the efficacy and safety of anlotinib hydrochloride plus temozolomide in patients with recurrent GBM.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Patients with first definite postsurgical progression of histologically confirmed GBM preceded by standard radiotherapy and temozolomide chemotherapy were eligible for inclusion. All patients received temozolomide (150-200 mg/m2, orally, every day (QD) d1-5/4 wk) and anlotinib (10 mg, orally, QD, d1-14/3 wk) until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity. The primary endpoint was investigator-assessed 6-month progression-free survival (PFS) rate by the Response Assessment in Neuro-Oncology (RANO) criteria.

RESULTS

Twenty-one patients were enrolled between May 2020 and July 2021, with a median age of 55 (range 27-68) years old. According to the Response Assessment in Neuro-Oncology (RANO) criteria, tumor response occurred in 17 patients, of which 9 patients had a complete response, and the objective response rate was 81.0% [95% confidence interval (CI), 62.6-99.3]. The disease control rate was 95.2% (95% CI, 76.2-99.9), with three additional patients achieving a stable disease without tumor progression. The median PFS was 7.3 months (95% CI, 4.9-9.7), and the 6-month PFS rate was 61.9% (95% CI, 39.3-84.6). The median overall survival was 16.9 months (95% CI, 7.8-26.0). The most common adverse events were leukocytopenia (66.7%), thrombocytopenia (38.1%), and hypertriglyceridemia (38.1%). Five patients had nine grade 3 adverse events, with a 23.8% incidence rate. Two patients discontinued therapy due to ischemic stroke (grade 3) and wound dehiscence (grade 1), respectively. No grade 4 or treatment-related deaths occurred in this study.

CONCLUSIONS

Anlotinib combined with temozolomide is efficacious and tolerated in patients with recurrent GBM.

Cryo-EM structures of LHCII in photo-active and photo-protecting states reveal allosteric regulation of light harvesting and excess energy dissipation

The major light-harvesting complex of photosystem II (LHCII) has a dual regulatory function in a process called non-photochemical quenching to avoid the formation of reactive oxygen. LHCII undergoes reversible conformation transitions to switch between a light-harvesting state for excited-state energy transfer and an energy-quenching state for dissipating excess energy under full sunshine. Here we report cryo-electron microscopy structures of LHCII in membrane nanodiscs, which mimic in vivo LHCII, and in detergent solution at pH 7.8 and 5.4, respectively. We found that, under low pH conditions, the salt bridges at the lumenal side of LHCII are broken, accompanied by the formation of two local α-helices on the lumen side. The formation of α-helices in turn triggers allosterically global protein conformational change, resulting in a smaller crossing angle between transmembrane helices. The fluorescence decay rates corresponding to different conformational states follow the Dexter energy transfer mechanism with a characteristic transition distance of 5.6 Å between Lut1 and Chl612. The experimental observations are consistent with the computed electronic coupling strengths using multistate density function theory.

Cryo-EM and femtosecond spectroscopic studies provide mechanistic insight into the energy transfer in CpcL-phycobilisomes

Phycobilisomes (PBS) are the major light harvesting complexes of photosynthesis in the cyanobacteria and red algae. CpcL-PBS is a type of small PBS in cyanobacteria that transfers energy directly to photosystem I without the core structure. Here we report the cryo-EM structure of the CpcL-PBS from the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 at 2.6-Å resolution. The structure shows the CpcD domain of ferredoxin: NADP⁺ oxidoreductase is located at the distal end of CpcL-PBS, responsible for its attachment to PBS. With the evidence of ultrafast transient absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, the roles of individual bilins in energy transfer are revealed. The bilin ^1Iβ⁸²₂ located near photosystem I has an enhanced planarity and is the red-bilin responsible for the direct energy transfer to photosystem I.

Interfullerene Electronic Interactions and Excited-State Dynamics in Fullerene Dumbbell Conjugates

Several dumbbell conjugates featuring M₃N@I_h-C₈₀ (M = Sc, Y) and C₆₀ were prepared to systematically investigate interfullerene electronic interactions and excited state dynamics. From electrochemical investigations, we concluded that the redox potentials of our M₃N@I_h-C₈₀ (M = Sc, Y) dumbbells depend largely on the interfullerene electronic interactions. Assisted by DFT calculation, the unique role of metal atoms was highlighted. Most importantly, ultrafast spectroscopy experiments revealed symmetry-breaking charge separation in Sc₃N@C₈₀-dumbbell to yield an unprecedented (Sc₃N@C₈₀)^•+-(Sc₃N@C₈₀)^•- charge separated state. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first time that symmetry-breaking charge separation following photoexcitation is corroborated in a fullerene system. As such, our work shed light on the significance of interfullerene electronic interactions and their uniqueness for modulating excited state properties.

Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of the Electronic Propensity Rule: A Linear Relationship between Radiative and Nonradiative Decay Rates of Molecules

The electronic propensity rule, which suggests a proportional relationship between radiative and nonradiative electronic coupling elements in fluorescent molecules, has been postulated for some time. Despite its potential significance, the rule has not been rigorously derived and experimentally validated. In this work, we draw upon the theoretical framework established by Schuurmans et al. for the relation between the radiative and nonradiative electronic coupling elements of the rare earth metal in the crystal at low temperature and extend their approach to the fluorescent molecules under external electric field perturbation at a fixed energy gap and varied temperatures, with a further single-electron approximation (Schuurmans, M. F. H., et al. Physica B & C 1984, 123, 131-155). We obtained a linear relation between the radiative decay rates and nonradiative decay rates for internal conversion, which is verified by experimental data from two types of dextran-dye complexes and the light-harvesting antenna complex in photosynthetic bacteria.

Scoring model to predict postoperative neurological deterioration in spinal schwannoma

Background

Spinal schwannomas (SSs) are benign tumors affecting the nerve sheath, accounting for 25% of spinal nerve root tumors. Surgery represents the mainstay of treatment for SS patients. Following surgery, approximately 30% of patients experienced developed new or worsening neurological deterioration, which probably represented an inevitable complication of nerve sheath tumor surgery. The objective of this study was to identify the rates of new or worsening neurological deterioration in our center and accurately predict the neurological outcomes of patients with SS by developing a new scoring model.

Methods

A total of 203 patients were retrospectively enrolled at our center. Risk factors associated with postoperative neurological deterioration were identified by multivariate logistic regression analysis. β–coefficients for independent risk factors were used to define a numerical score to generate a scoring model. The validation cohort at our center was used to verify the accuracy and reliability of the scoring model. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to evaluate the performance of the scoring model.

Results

In this study, five measured variables were selected for the scoring model: duration of preoperative symptoms (1 point), radiating pain (2 points), tumor size (2 points), tumor site (1 point), and dumbbell tumor (1 point). The scoring model divided the spinal schwannoma patients into three categories: low risk (0-2 points), intermediate risk (3-5 points), and high risk (6-7 points), with predicted risks of neurological deterioration of 8.7%, 36%, and 87.5%, respectively. And the validation cohort confirmed the model with the predicted risks of 8.6%, 46.4%, and 66.6%, respectively.

Conclusion

The new scoring model might intuitively and individually predict the risk of neurological deterioration and may aid individualized treatment decision-making for SS patients.

Optical bulk-boundary dichotomy in a quantum spin Hall insulator

The bulk-boundary correspondence is a critical concept in topological quantum materials. For instance, a quantum spin Hall insulator features a bulk insulating gap with gapless helical boundary states protected by the underlying Z₂ topology. However, the bulk-boundary dichotomy and distinction are rarely explored in optical experiments, which can provide unique information about topological charge carriers beyond transport and electronic spectroscopy techniques. Here, we utilize mid-infrared absorption micro-spectroscopy and pump-probe micro-spectroscopy to elucidate the bulk-boundary optical responses of Bi₄Br₄, a recently discovered room-temperature quantum spin Hall insulator. Benefiting from the low energy of infrared photons and the high spatial resolution, we unambiguously resolve a strong absorption from the boundary states while the bulk absorption is suppressed by its insulating gap. Moreover, the boundary absorption exhibits strong polarization anisotropy, consistent with the one-dimensional nature of the topological boundary states. Our infrared pump-probe microscopy further measures a substantially increased carrier lifetime for the boundary states, which reaches one nanosecond scale. The nanosecond lifetime is about one to two orders longer than that of most topological materials and can be attributed to the linear dispersion nature of the helical boundary states. Our findings demonstrate the optical bulk-boundary dichotomy in a topological material and provide a proof-of-principal methodology for studying topological optoelectronics.

Mean arterial pressure-aneurysm neck ratio predicts the rupture risk of intracranial aneurysm by reflecting pressure at the dome

Background and purpose

The unruptured intracranial aneurysm (UIA) has high disability and mortality rate after rupture, it is particularly important to assess the risk of UIA and to carry out individualized treatment. The objective of this research is to introduce a novel parameter to predict the rupture risk of UIA.

Methods

A total of 649 patients with 964 intracranial aneurysms in our center were enrolled. A novel parameter named mean arterial pressure-aneurysmal neck ratio (MAPN) was defined. Ten baseline clinical features and twelve aneurysm morphological characteristics were extracted to generate the MAPN model. The discriminatory performance of the MAPN model was compared with the PHASES score and the UCAS score.

Results

In hemodynamic analysis, MAPN was positively correlated with wall shear stress and aneurysm top pressure, with Pearson correlation coefficients of 0.887 and 0.791, respectively. The MAPN was larger in the ruptured group (36.62 ± 18.96 vs. 28.38 ± 14.58, P < 0.001). The area under the curve (AUC) of the MAPN was superior than the AUC of aspect ratio (AR) and the bottleneck factor (BN), they were 0.64 (P < 0.001; 95% CI, 0.588-0.692), 0.611 (P < 0.001; 95% CI, 0.559-0.663) and 0.607 (P < 0.001; 95% CI, 0.554-0.660), respectively. The MAPN model constructed by aneurysm size, aneurysm location, presence of secondary sacs and MAPN, demonstrated good discriminatory ability. The MAPN model exhibited superior performance compared with the UCAS score and the PHASES score (the AUC values were 0.799 [P < 0.001; 95% CI, 0.756-0.840], 0.763 [P < 0.001; 95% CI,0.719-0.807] and 0.741 [P < 0.001; 95% CI, 0.695-0.787], respectively; the sensitivities were 0.849, 0.758 and 0.753, respectively).

Conclusions

Research demonstrates the potential of MAPN to augment the clinical decision-making process for assessing the rupture risk of UIAs.

Ultralong Lifetime of Plasmon-Excited Electrons Realized in Nonepitaxial/Epitaxial Au@CdS/CsPbBr3 Triple-Heteronanocrystals

Combination of the strong light-absorbing power of plasmonic metals with the superior charge carrier dynamics of halide perovskites is appealing for bio-inspired solar-energy conversion due to the potential to acquire long-lived plasmon-induced hot electrons. However, the direct coupling of these two materials, with Au/CsPbBr₃ heteronanocrystals (HNCs) as a prototype, results in severe suppression of plasmon resonances. The present work shows that interfacial engineering is a key knob for overcoming this impediment, based on the creation of a CdS mediate layer between Au and CsPbBr₃ forming atomically organized Au-CdS and CdS-CsPbBr₃ interfaces by nonepitaxial/epitaxial combined strategy. Transient spectroscopy studies demonstrate that the resulting Au@CdS/CsPbBr₃ HNCs generate remarkably long-lived plasmon-induced charge carriers with lifetime up to nanosecond timescale, which is several orders of magnitude longer than those reported for colloidal plasmonic metal-semiconductor systems. Such long-lived carriers extracted from plasmonic antennas enable to drive CO₂ photoreduction with efficiency outperforming previously reported CsPbBr₃ -based photocatalysts. The findings disclose a new paradigm for achieving much elongated time windows to harness the substantial energy of transient plasmons through realization of synergistic coupling of plasmonic metals and halide perovskites.

Understanding Aerobic Nitrogen Photooxidation on Titania through In Situ Time-Resolved Spectroscopy

Nitrate is an important raw material for chemical fertilizers, but it is industrially manufactured in multiple steps at high temperature and pressure, urgently motivating the design of a green and sustainable strategy for nitrate production. We report the photosynthesis of nitrate from N₂ and O₂ on commercial TiO₂ in a flow reactor under ambient conditions. The TiO₂ photocatalyst offered a high nitrate yield of 1.85 μmol h^-1 as well as a solar-to-nitrate energy conversion efficiency up to 0.13 %. We combined reactivity and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to elucidate the mechanism of nitrate formation and unveil the special role of O₂ in N≡N bond dissociation. The mechanistic insight into charge-involved N₂ oxidation was further demonstrated by in situ transient absorption spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance. This work exhibits the mechanistic origin of N₂ photooxidation and initiates a potential method for triggering inert catalytic reactions.

Bipolar charge collecting structure enables overall water splitting on ferroelectric photocatalysts

Ferroelectrics are considered excellent photocatalytic candidates for solar fuel production because of the unidirectional charge separation and above-gap photovoltage. Nevertheless, the performance of ferroelectric photocatalysts is often moderate. A few studies showed that these types of photocatalysts could achieve overall water splitting. This paper proposes an approach to fabricating interfacial charge-collecting nanostructures on positive and negative domains of ferroelectric, enabling water splitting in ferroelectric photocatalysts. The present study observes efficient accumulations of photogenerated electrons and holes within their thermalization length (~50 nm) around Au nanoparticles located in the positive and negative domains of a BaTiO3 single crystal. Photocatalytic overall water splitting is observed on a ferroelectric BaTiO3 single crystal after assembling oxidation and reduction cocatalysts on the positively and negatively charged Au nanoparticles, respectively. The fabrication of bipolar charge-collecting structures on ferroelectrics to achieve overall water splitting offers a way to utilize the energetic photogenerated charges in solar energy conversion.

Cold-induced calreticulin OsCRT3 conformational changes promote OsCIPK7 binding and temperature sensing in rice

Unusually low temperatures caused by global climate change adversely affect rice production. Sensing cold to trigger signal network is a key base for improvement of chilling tolerance trait.  Here, we report that Oryza sativa Calreticulin 3 (OsCRT3) localized at the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) exhibits conformational changes under cold stress, thereby enhancing its interaction with CBL-interacting protein kinase 7 (OsCIPK7) to sense cold. Phenotypic analyses of OsCRT3 knock-out mutants and transgenic overexpression lines demonstrate that OsCRT3 is a positive regulator in chilling tolerance. OsCRT3 localizes at the ER and mediates increases in cytosolic calcium levels under cold stress. Notably, cold stress triggers secondary structural changes of OsCRT3 and enhances its binding affinity with OsCIPK7, which finally boosts its kinase activity. Moreover, Calcineurin B-like protein 7 (OsCBL7) and OsCBL8 interact with OsCIPK7 specifically on the plasma membrane. Taken together, our results thus identify a cold-sensing mechanism that simultaneously conveys cold-induced protein conformational change, enhances kinase activity, and Ca²⁺ signal generation to facilitate chilling tolerance in rice.

Excited-state dynamics of all-trans protonated retinal Schiff base in CRABPII-based rhodopsin mimics

The rhodopsin mimic is a chemically synthetized complex with retinyl Schiff base (RSB) formed between protein and the retinal chromophore that can mimic the natural rhodopsin-like protein. The artificial rhodopsin mimic is more stable and designable than the natural protein and hence has wider uses in photon detection devices. The mimic structure RSB, like the case in the actual rhodopsin-like protein, undergoes isomerization and protonation throughout the photoreaction process. As a result, understanding the dynamics of the RSB in the photoreaction process is critical. In this study, the ultrafast transient absorption spectra of three mutants of the cellular retinoic acid-binding protein II-based rhodopsin mimic at acidic environment were recorded, from which the related excited-state dynamics of the all-trans protonated RSB (AT-PRSB) were investigated. The transient fluorescence spectra measurements are used to validate some of the dynamic features. We find that the excited-state dynamics of AT-PRSB in three mutants share a similar pattern that differs significantly from the dynamics of 15-cis PRSB of the rhodopsin mimic in neutral solution. By comparing the dynamics across the three mutants, we discovered that the aromatic residues near the β-ionone ring structure of the retinal may help stabilize the AT-PRSB and hence slow down its isomerization rate. The experimental results provide implications on designing a rhodopsin-like protein with significant infrared fluorescence, which can be particularly useful in the applications in biosensing or bioimaging in deeper tissues.

Systemic immune responses after ischemic stroke: From the center to the periphery

Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of disability and death. It imposes a heavy economic burden on individuals, families and society. The mortality rate of ischemic stroke has decreased with the help of thrombolytic drug therapy and intravascular intervention. However, the nerve damage caused by ischemia-reperfusion is long-lasting and followed by multiple organ dysfunction. In this process, the immune responses manifested by systemic inflammatory responses play an important role. It begins with neuroinflammation following ischemic stroke. The large number of inflammatory cells released after activation of immune cells in the lesion area, along with the deactivated neuroendocrine and autonomic nervous systems, link the center with the periphery. With the activation of systemic immunity and the emergence of immunosuppression, peripheral organs become the second “battlefield” of the immune response after ischemic stroke and gradually become dysfunctional and lead to an adverse prognosis. The purpose of this review was to describe the systemic immune responses after ischemic stroke. We hope to provide new ideas for future research and clinical treatments to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.

ZNF395 facilitates macrophage polarization and impacts the prognosis of glioma

The immune microenvironment of glioma attributes to the initiation and development of glioma; however, the underlying mechanisms of tumor microenvironment formation have not been fully understood. In this study, we revealed that Zinc Finger Protein 395 (ZNF395), a member of the Kruppel C2H2-type zinc-finger protein family and also known as a common transcription factor, was aberrantly overexpressed in glioma and positively associated with the poor clinicopathological features and the prognosis of patients with glioma based on the analyses of TCGA, CGGA and other datasets. Further in vitro experimental data demonstrated that the upregulation of ZNF395 promoted the proliferation of glioma cells. In addition, functional enrichment analysis showed that ZNF395 was involved in immune processes and correlated with macrophage infiltration and polarization. Moreover, C-C Motif Chemokine Ligand 20 (CCL20), one of the ZNF395 co-expressed genes, was validated as the downstream factor under the transcriptional regulation of ZNF395. Importantly, cell co-culture experiments confirmed that ZNF395 upregulated both the intracellular and secreted CCL20 level of glioma cells and induced M2 macrophage polarization which is known to promote the malignant progression of glioma. Taken together, our findings suggested that ZNF395 might play an essential role in glioma development, and inhibition of ZNF395 might be a plausible strategy for glioma therapy.

Polarized Cu-Bi Site Pairs for Non-Covalent to Covalent Interaction Tuning toward N2 Photoreduction

A universal atomic layer confined doping strategy is developed to prepare Bi₂₄ O₃₁ Br₁₀ materials incorporating isolated Cu atoms. The local polarization can be created along the CuOBi atomic interface, which enables better electron delocalization for effective N₂ activation. The optimized Cu-Bi₂₄ O₃₁ Br₁₀ atomic layers show 5.3× and 88.2× improved photocatalytic nitrogen fixation activity than Bi₂₄ O₃₁ Br₁₀ atomic layer and bulk Bi₂₄ O₃₁ Br₁₀ , respectively, with the NH₃ generation rate reaching 291.1 µmol g^-1 h^-1 in pure water. The polarized Cu-Bi site pairs can increase the non-covalent interaction between the catalyst's surface and N₂ molecules, then further weaken the covalent bond order in NN. As a result, the hydrogenation pathways can be altered from the associative distal pathway for Bi₂₄ O₃₁ Br₁₀ to the alternating pathway for Cu-Bi₂₄ O₃₁ Br₁₀ . This strategy provides an accessible pathway for designing polarized metal site pairs or tuning the non-covalent interaction and covalent bond order.

The mechanism for thermal-enhanced chaperone-like activity of α-crystallin against UV irradiation-induced aggregation of γD-crystallin

Exposure to solar UV irradiation damages γ-crystallin, leading to cataract formation via aggregation. α-Crystallin, as a small heat-shock protein (sHsps), efficiently suppresses this irreversible aggregation by selectively binding the denatured γ-crystallin monomer. In this study, liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was used to evaluate UV-325 nm irradiation-induced photodamage of human γD-crystallin in the presence of bovine α-crystallin, atomic force microscope (AFM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) techniques were used to detect the quaternary structure changes of α-crystallin oligomer, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and temperature-jump (T-jump) nanosecond time-resolved IR absorbance difference spectroscopy were used to probe the secondary structure changes of bovine α-crystallin. We find that the thermal-induced subunit dissociation of α-crystallin oligomer involves the breaking of hydrogen bonds at the dimeric interface, leading to three different spectral components at varied temperature regions as resolved from temperature-dependent IR spectra. Under UV-325 nm irradiation, unfolded γD-crystallin binds to the dissociated α-crystallin subunit to form αγ-complex, then follows the reassociation of αγ-complex to the partially dissociated α-crystallin oligomer. This prevents the aggregation of denatured γD-crystallin. The formation of the γD-bound α-crystallin oligomer is further confirmed by AFM and DLS analysis, which reveals an obvious size expansion in the reassociated αγ-oligomers. In addition, UV-325 nm irradiation causes a peptide bond cleavage of γD-crystallin at Ala158 in presence of α-crystallin. Our results suggest a very effective protection mechanism for subunits dissociated from α-crystallin oligomers against UV irradiation-induced aggregation of γD-crystallin, at an expense of a loss of a short C-terminal peptide in γD-crystallin.

Vibrational and vibronic coherences in the energy transfer process of light-harvesting complex II revealed by two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy

The presence of quantum coherence in light-harvesting complex II (LHCII) as a mechanism to understand the efficiency of the light-harvesting function in natural photosynthetic systems is still debated due to its structural complexity and weak-amplitude coherent oscillations. Here, we revisit the coherent dynamics and clarify different types of coherences in the energy transfer processes of LHCII using a joint method of the high-S/N transient grating and two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy. We find that the electronic coherence decays completely within 50 fs at room temperature. The vibrational coherences of chlorophyll a dominate over oscillations within 1 ps, whereas a low-frequency mode of 340 cm−1 with a vibronic mixing character may participate in vibrationally assisted energy transfer between chlorophylls a. Our results may suggest that vibronic mixing is relevant for rapid energy transfer processes among chlorophylls in LHCII.

Semiconductor saturable absorber mirror in the 3-5 µm mid-infrared region

Semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAMs) have been regarded as a revolutionary technology for ultrafast mode-locked lasers, producing numerous landmark laser breakthroughs. However, the operating wavelength of existing SESAMs is limited to less than 3 µm. In this study, we create a 3-5 µm mid-infrared (MIR) SESAM by engineering an InAs/GaSb type-II superlattice. Bandgap engineering and the strong coupling between potential wells in a superlattice enable a broadband response of saturable absorption in the 3-5 µm spectral range. Using the fabricated SESAM, we realize a SESAM mode-locked Er:ZBLAN fiber laser at 3.5 µm, which delivers MIR ultrashort pulses with high long-term stability. The breakthrough of SESAM fabrication in the MIR will promote the development of MIR ultrafast coherent sources and related application fields.

The progress of multimodal imaging combination and subregion based radiomics research of cancers

In recent years, with the standardization of radiomics methods; development of tools; and popularization of the concept, radiomics has been widely used in all aspects of tumor diagnosis; treatment; and prognosis. As the study of radiomics in cancer has become more advanced, the currently used methods have revealed their shortcomings. The performance of cancer radiomics based on single-modality medical images, which based on their imaging principles, only partially reflects tumor information, has been necessarily compromised. Using the whole tumor as a region of interest to extract radiomic features inevitably leads to the loss of intra-tumoral heterogeneity of, which also affects the performance of radiomics. Radiomics of multimodal images extracts various aspects of information from images of each modality and then integrates them together for model construction; thus, avoiding missing information. Subregional segmentation based on multimodal medical image combinations allows radiomics features acquired from subregions to retain tumor heterogeneity, further improving the performance of radiomics. In this review, we provide a detailed summary of the current research on the radiomics of multimodal images of cancer and tumor subregion-based radiomics, and then raised some of the research problems and also provide a thorough discussion on these issues.

Efficient long-range triplet exciton transport by metal-metal interaction at room temperature

Efficient and long-range exciton transport is critical for photosynthesis and opto-electronic devices, and for triplet-harvesting materials, triplet exciton diffusion length ( [[EQUATION]] ) and coefficient ( [[EQUATION]] ) are key parameters in determining their performances. Herein, we observed that PtII and PdII organometallic nanowires exhibit long-range anisotropic triplet exciton LD of 5-7 μm along the M-M direction using direct photoluminescence (PL) imaging technique by low-power continuous wave (CW) laser excitation. At room temperature, via a combined triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) analysis and spatial PL imaging, an efficient triplet exciton diffusion was observed for the PtII and PdII nanowires with extended close M-M contact, while is absent in nanowires without close M-M contact. Two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) and calculations revealed a significant contribution of the delocalized 1/3[dσ*(M-M)→π*] excited state during the exciton diffusion modulated by the M-M distance.

[Effects of different doses of glucocorticoids on minimally invasive procedures in pain patients with type 2 diabetes]

Objective: To investigate the effects of different doses of glucocorticoids on minimally invasive procedures in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and optimize the clinical pathways of minimally invasive procedures. Methods: The clinical data of 284 patients with T2DM who received minially invasive procedures from the Department of Pain Medicine, West China Hospital, Sichuan University from May 2017 to May 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were divided into two groups according to the main diagnostic types: spine-related group (n=148) and herpes zoster group (n=136). According to the cumulative dose of glucocorticoids (GCs) per unit body surface area during the hospitalization, patients were further divided into three subgroups: low-dose group (GCs<3.5 mg/m²), medium-dose group (3.5 mg/m² ≤GCs<7 mg/m²), and high-dose group (GCs≥7 mg/m²). The clinical characteristics of the patients in different subgroups of the two diseases groups were compared. The effects of the glucocorticoids on the pain intensity, blood glucose, length of hospital stay (LOS) and total hospitalization cost were compared among the 3 subgroups of the two diseases groups. Results: There were no significant differences in the age, gender, height, weight, visual analog scale (VAS) and fasting blood glucose before procedures between the two groups (all P>0.05). The VAS score of the low-dose group from the spine-related group was 4.5±1.6, which was higher than that of the medium-dose group (3.5±1.3) (P=0.004). VAS score was 4.3±1.3 in the medium-dose group and 4.4±1.6 in the high-dose group from the herpes zoster group, which were higher than that in the low-dose group (3.5±0.9) (P=0.006). In terms of blood glucose, the impact on the fasting blood glucose before and after the procedures in the low-dose group from the spine-related group was less than that in the medium dose group (P=0.013). In the herpes zoster group, the blood glucose of the low-dose group was (11±5) mmol/L, which had less influence on the blood glucose fluctuation during the hospitalization than that in the high-dose group [(15±5) mmol/L] (P<0.05). The LOS and hospitalization cost in the low-dose group from the spine-related group were (9±4) d and (10 583±4 851) yuan, respectively, which were less than those in the medium-dose group [(11±3) d and (15 202±7 418) yuan] and high-dose group [(13±6) d and (18 100±4 138) yuan] (all P<0.05); however, there was no significant difference among different subgroups in the herpes zoster group (all P>0.05). Conclusion: When used in the patients with T2DM undergoing minimally invasive procedures for spine-related diseases, low-dose glucocorticoids can obtain more clinical benefit than high dose, and high dose can lead to raised blood glucose, prolong the LOS, and increase the hospitalization cost.

Trem1 Induces Periodontal Inflammation via Regulating M1 Polarization

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by destruction of nonmineralized and mineralized connective tissues. This study evaluated the role of Trem1 (triggering receptors expressed on myeloid cells 1) in periodontitis by influencing polarization of M1 macrophages through the STAT3/HIF-1α signaling pathway. Trem1 was significantly upregulated in the gingival tissues of patients with periodontitis, as identified by high-throughput RNA sequencing, and positively correlated with levels of M1 macrophage-associated genes. The results of flow cytometry, Western blotting, and reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction showed that knockdown of Trem1 in RAW 264.7 cells decreased polarization of M1 macrophages and increased polarization of M2 macrophages, while overexpression of Trem1 exerted an opposite effect. Furthermore, a mouse model of Trem1 knockout periodontitis exhibited limited infiltration of macrophages and decreased expression levels of M1 macrophage-associated genes in periodontitis lesions and bone marrow-derived macrophages. Importantly, we found that Trem1 could regulate polarization of M1 macrophages through STAT3/HIF-1α signaling as evidenced by RNA sequencing. Moreover, inhibition of Trem1 and HIF-1α could suppress the expression level of proinflammatory cytokine (interleukin 1β) and upregulate the expression level of anti-inflammatory cytokine (interleukin 10) in periodontitis. Collectively, we identified that the Trem1/STAT3/HIF-1α axis could regulate polarization of M1 macrophages and is a potential candidate in the treatment of periodontitis.

Structural Reorganization of a Synthetic Mimic of the Oxygen-Evolving Center in Multiple Redox Transitions Revealed by Electrochemical FTIR Spectra

In photosynthesis, the protein-bound natural oxygen-evolving center (OEC) undergoes multiple oxidation-state transitions in the light-driven water splitting reactions with a stepwise change in the oxidation potential. Because the protein is vulnerable to electrochemical oxidation, the multiple oxidation/reduction-state transitions can hardly be achieved by electrochemical oxidation with a continuous change in the oxidation potential. An OEC mimic that can undergo four redox transitions has been synthesized (Zhang, C., Science, 2015, 348, 690-693). Here we report an electrochemical FTIR spectroscopic study of this synthetic complex at its multiple oxidation states in the low-frequency region for Mn-O bonds. Compared with those of the native OEC induced by pulsed laser flashes, our results also show the existence of two structural isomers in the S₂ state, with the closed cubane conformer being more stable than the open cubane conformer, in contrast to that of the native OEC in which the open form is more stable.

Low-Dosage Bevacizumab Treatment: Effect on Radiation Necrosis After Gamma Knife Radiosurgery for Brain Metastases

Cerebral radiation necrosis (RN), a complication of Gamma Knife radiosurgery, is difficult to treat, although bevacizumab seems to be effective. However, clinical data pertaining to bevacizumab treatment for RN are scarce, and its high price is problematic. This study explored the effectiveness of low-dose bevacizumab for RN caused by Gamma Knife. We retrospectively analyzed 22 patients who suffered cerebral RN post-Gamma Knife, and received bevacizumab treatment because of the poor efficacy of glucocorticoids. Low-dose bevacizumab (3 mg/kg) was administered for two cycles at 2-week intervals. T1- and T2-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images were examined for changes in RN status. We also monitored the dose of glucocorticoid, Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) score, and adverse drug reactions. The mean volume of RN lesions decreased by 45% on T1-weighted images with contrast enhancement, and by 74% on T2-weighted images. All patients discontinued the use of glucocorticoids. According to the KPS scores, all patients showed an improvement in their symptoms and neurological function. No side effects were observed. Low-dosage bevacizumab at a dose of 3 mg/kg every 2 weeks is effective for treating cerebral RN after Gamma knife for brain metastases.

Stereotactic radiosurgery for the treatment of esophageal carcinoma brain metastases

PURPOSE

The authors evaluated the results of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for the treatment of metastatic brain tumors from esophageal carcinoma.

METHODS

We retrospectively analyzed the clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes in 21 patients with metastatic brain tumors from esophageal carcinoma who underwent SRS between July 2011 and February 2019.

RESULTS

21 patients (25 SRS procedures) of a total of 88 tumors underwent Gamma knife SRS. Tumor histology was adenocarcinoma in 6 patients (28.6%) and squamous cell carcinoma in 15 patients (71.4%). The median age was 66 years (range 58-73). Eleven patients (52.4%) presented with multiple metastases (range 2-11), and 10 . (47.6%) with a single metastasis. The median tumor volume was 0.55 cm3 (range 0.004-44.64 cm3). No complications related to radiosurgical treatment were identified. The local tumor control rate in this group was 94.2 %. The median survival time from the diagnosis of esophageal cancer was 22 months and the median survival from SRS was 16 months. Higher Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS) at the time of procedure was associated with increased survival (p=0.003). After SRS, 4 patients had subsequent SRS (1 for boost therapy, 3 for new metastatic deposits), 1 patient underwent craniotomy due to tumor progression. Of the 19 patients who have died, 17 (89.5%) succumbed to systemic disease progression and 2 (10.5%) had neurologic deaths.

CONCLUSION

SRS is an effective and minimally invasive treatment that can prolong survival. Accordingly, SRS could be used as the initial treatment modality, if possible, even in patients with multiple metastases.

Unilateral Subfrontal Approach for Giant Tuberculum Sellae Meningioma: Single Center Experience and Review of the Literature

Background

Microsurgical Transcranial approach (mTCA) is the primary choice for the resection of giant Tuberculum Sellae Meningiomas (TSM). The objective of this study is to explore surgical details of unilateral subfrontal approach.

Methods

Ten patients with giant TSM treated by unilateral subfrontal approach were included from January 2018 to June 2021. Demographic characteristics, surgical data, post-procedure complications and outcomes of patients have been descriptive analyzed, combined with systematic literature review to explore the surgical details and the prognosis of unilateral subfrontal approach.

Results

Ten patients include six male and four females, age range from 35 to 77 years, duration of visual impairment from 1 to 12 months, were all performed unilateral subfrontal approach. Nine patients achieved radical resection (Simpson grades I-II) through post-operative imaging confirmation, and Simpson IV resection was performed in the remaining one due to cavernous sinus invasion. The postoperative visual acuity was improved or maintained in 8 patients. Visual acuity decreased in 2 cases, including 1 case of optic nerve atrophy and the other case of optic canal not opening. Five cases with frontal sinus opened were repaired during the operation and there was no postoperative cerebrospinal fluid leakage or intracranial infection. One patient suffered from postoperative anosmia, one patient developed left limb weakness, but their symptoms have improved in the follow-up.

Conclusion

Summarize the experience of our center and previous literature, unilateral forehead bottom craniotomy is a feasible surgical approach for giant tuberculum sellae meningioma. Intraoperative application of EC glue and pedicled fascia flap to repair the frontal sinus can prevent complications associated with frontal sinus opening. Optic canal unroofing has huge advantage in visual improvement.

Determinants of antibiotic over-prescribing for upper respiratory tract infections in an emergency department with good primary care access: a quantitative analysis

BACKGROUND

Upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) account for the highest proportion of non-urgent visits to the emergency department (ED), resulting in unnecessary antibiotic use.

AIM

This study sought to understand the determinants of antibiotic prescribing for URTI among 130 junior physicians in a busy adult ED in Singapore.

METHODS

Forty-four Likert-scale statements were developed with reference to a prior qualitative study, followed by an anonymous cross-sectional survey among ED junior physicians. Data analysis was performed with factor reduction and multivariable logistic regression.

FINDINGS

One-in-six (16.9%) physicians were high antibiotic prescribers (self-reported antibiotic prescribing rate of >30% of URTI patients). After adjusting for place of medical education and years of practice as a physician, perceived over-prescribing of antibiotics in the ED (adjusted odds ratio (OR) 2.37, 95% confidence interval (CI) (1.15, 4.86), P=0.019) and perceived compliance with the antibiotic prescribing practices in the ED (adjusted OR 2.10, 95% CI (1.02, 4.30), P=0.043) were positively associated with high antibiotic prescribing. In contrast, high antibiotic prescribers were 6.67 times (95% CI (1.67, 25.0), P=0.007) less likely to treat and manage patients with URTI symptomatically and 7.12 times (95% CI (1.28, 39.66), P=0.025) more likely to depend on diagnostic tests to prescribe antibiotics than the regular antibiotic prescribers.

CONCLUSION

Organizational-related factors (organizational norms and culture) were strong determinants of antibiotic prescribing practices for uncomplicated URTI in the ED. Other contributing factors include diagnostic uncertainty and knowledge gaps. Role-modelling of institutional best practice norms and clinical decision support tools based on local epidemiology can optimize antibiotic prescribing in the ED.

PTP1B inhibitor alleviates deleterious microglial activation and neuronal injury after ischemic stroke by modulating the ER stress-autophagy axis via PERK signaling in microglia

Cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (IR) after ischemic stroke causes deleterious microglial activation. Protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) exacerbates neuroinflammation, yet the effect of the inhibition on microglial activation and cerebral IR injury is unknown. A cerebral IR rat model was induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) and reperfusion. The PTP1B inhibitor, sc-222227, was administered intracerebroventricularly. Neurologic deficits, infarct volume, and brain water content were examined. An in vitro oxygen glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) model was established in primary microglia and BV-2 cells. Microglial activation/polarization, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, autophagy, and apoptosis were detected using western blot, immunohistology, ELISA, and real-time PCR. Protein interaction was assessed by a proximity ligation assay. The results showed a significant increase in microglial PTP1B expression after IR injury. Sc-222227 attenuated IR-induced microglial activation, ER stress, and autophagy and promoted M2 polarization. Upon OGD/R, sc-222227 mitigated microglial activation by inhibiting ER stress-dependent autophagy, the effect of which was abolished by PERK activation, and PERK inhibition attenuated microglial activation. The PTP1B-phosphorylated PERK protein interaction was significantly increased after OGD/R, but decreased upon sc-222227 treatment. Finally, sc-222227 mitigated neuronal damage and neurologic deficits after IR injury. Treatment targeting microglial PTP1B might be a potential therapeutic strategy for ischemic stroke treatment.

Direct Z-Scheme Heterojunction of Semicoherent FAPbBr3/Bi2WO6 Interface for Photoredox Reaction with Large Driving Force

Metal halide perovskites with direct band gap and strong light absorption are promising materials for harvesting solar energy; however, their relatively narrow band gap limits their redox ability when used as a photocatalyst. Adding a second semiconductor component with the appropriate band structure offsets can generate a Z-scheme photocatalytic system, taking full advantage of the perovskite's intrinsic properties. In this work, we develop a direct Z-scheme photocatalyst based on formamidinium lead bromide and bismuth tungstate (FAPbBr₃/Bi₂WO₆) with strong redox ability for artificial solar-to-chemical energy conversion. With desirable band offsets and strong joint redox potential, the dual photocatalyst is shown to form a semicoherent heterointerface. Ultrafast transient infrared absorption studies employing selective excitation reveal synergetic photocarrier dynamics and demonstrate Z-scheme charge transfer mechanisms. Under simulated solar irradiation, a large driving force photoredox reaction (∼2.57 eV) of CO₂ reduction coupled with benzyl alcohol oxidation to benzaldehyde is achieved on the Z-scheme FAPbBr₃/Bi₂WO₆ photocatalyst, harnessing the full synergetic potential of the combined system.

Imaging characteristics of Intrasellar cavernous hemangioma: A case report

RATIONALE

Intrasellar cavernous hemangiomas (ICHs) are rare vascular lesions that arise in the sellar region. ICHs are usually misdiagnosed and treated as pituitary adenomas. Therefore, a preoperative diagnosis is particularly important, especially when the goal is complete resection.

PATIENT CONCERNS

A 55-year-old woman presented with a 1-month history of intermittent dizziness. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a well-demarcated abnormal ellipsoid signal in the sellar region (size: 2.7 cm × 1.7 cm), with a mulberry-like enhancement after gadolinium injection. Computed tomography revealed an intrasellar mass without calcification that extended into the left cavernous sinus and was faintly contrast-enhanced. Angiography revealed a tumor with mildly delayed staining fed by the C5 segment of the right internal carotid artery.

DIAGNOSIS

An intrasellar cavernous hemangioma based on neuroradiological examinations.

INTERVENTIONS

The patient underwent surgery with an endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach to debulk the lesion and obtain tissue for the pathological diagnosis.

OUTCOMES

Blood spurting was observed after puncture, and the capsule was stained blue. Lesion removal was stopped, and the patient underwent gamma knife surgery 1 week later. She remained in good condition during the follow-up.

LESSONS

Sponge-like or mulberry-like lesions can be identified on MRI after gadolinium injection and can facilitate a preoperative diagnosis of ICH. Currently, surgical debulking with cranial nerve decompression during the acute stage and subsequent gamma knife radiosurgery are considered to be a safe and effective treatment.

Electronic State-Resolved Multimode-Coupled Vibrational Wavepackets in Oxazine 720 by Two-Dimensional Electronic Spectroscopy

The difference between the excited- and ground-state vibrational wavepackets remains to be fully explored when multiple vibrational modes are coherently excited simultaneously by femtosecond pulses. In this work, we present a series of one- and two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy for studying multimode wavepackets of oxazine 720 in solution. Fourier transform (FT) maps combined with time-frequency transform (TFT) are employed to unambiguously distinguish the origin of low-frequency vibrational wavepackets, that is, an excited-state vibrational wavepacket of 586 cm^-1 with a dephasing time of 0.7 ps and a ground-state vibrational wavepacket of 595 cm^-1 with a dephasing time of 1.3-1.7 ps. We also found the additional low-frequency vibrational wavepackets resulting from the coupling of the 595 cm^-1 mode to a series of high-frequency modes centered at 1150 cm^-1 via electronic transitions. The combined use of FT maps and TFT analysis allows us to reveal the potential vibrational coupling of wavepackets and offers the possibility of disentangling the coupling between the electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom in condensed-phase systems.
