Chiral induction in substrate-supported self-assembled molecular networks under nanoconfinement conditions

Self-assembly on surfaces often produces chiral networks, even when starting from achiral building blocks. However, when achiral molecules are used to produce chiral networks, two possible enantiomorphs are created with equal probability, rendering therefore the overall surface achiral. This outcome can be changed by finding a way to promote the preferential formation of one of the two enantiomorphs. In this regard, the creation of nanoconfined space, which has been called molecular corral, having a chosen orientation with respect to the substrate symmetry has been demonstrated to be a valid way to obtain the preferential self-assembly of a network having a determined chirality. In this study we aim to further expand the understanding of the principles of such mechanism, in particular by looking at unexplored parameters that could have a role in the production of the observed bias. In this way a deeper comprehension of the mechanisms at the base of the chiral self-assembly could be obtained.

Modular metallotecton for engineering permanently porous frameworks: supernumerary role of ancillary ion

The formation of robust supramolecular frameworks built from hetero-polytopic metal complexes and interacting with different ancillary ions remains a long-standing and underexplored desire. Herein, the secondary sphere interaction chemistry of [Ru(5-oxido-6-hydroxy-1,10-phenanthroline)a(5,6-dihydroxy-1,10-phenanthroline)(3-a)]-(a-2) (1) (a = 1, 3) coordination ion is reported, where the π-conjugated phenanthroline ligands are functionalized with catecholate groups used as H-bond donors and ligands. The deprotonation of the catechols is found to control the overall charge stoichiometry in 1, acting as a metallotecton to interact with anions of different basicity (Cl- in 1.Cl and Br- in 1.Br) as well as with Li+ cations (in 1.Li+). These interactions lead to the formation of 2D porous honeycomb networks without any significant alteration in the molecular packing. This implies that the self-assembly process is controlled by complementary intermolecular non-covalent interactions making the choice of the ancillary ion insignificant. The robust porous structure of the frameworks is established by uptake of D2O and I2 molecules within the microporous channels. This work demonstrates that supramolecular frameworks appear as flexible candidates for applications in gas sorption, separation and chemical sensing.

Electronic transport through single-molecule oligophenyl-diethynyl junctions with direct gold-carbon bonds formed at low temperature

We report on the first systematic transport study of alkynyl-ended oligophenyl-diethynyl (OPA) single-molecule junctions with direct Au-C anchoring scheme at low temperature using the mechanically controlled break junction technique. Through quantitative statistical analysis of opening traces, conductance histograms and density functional theory studies, we identified different types of junctions, classified by their conductance and stretching behavior, for OPA molecules between Au electrodes with two to four phenyl rings. We performed inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy and observed the excitation of Au-C vibrational modes confirming the existence of Au-C bonds at low temperature and compared the stability of molecule junctions upon mechanical stretching. Our findings reveal the huge potential for future functional molecule transport studies at low temperature using alkynyl endgroups.

Hybrid chemoenzymatic heterogeneous catalyst prepared in one step from zeolite nanocrystals and enzyme-polyelectrolyte complexes

The combination of inorganic heterogeneous catalysts and enzymes, in so-called hybrid chemoenzymatic heterogeneous catalysts (HCEHCs), is an attractive strategy to effectively run chemoenzymatic reactions. Yet, the preparation of such bifunctional materials remains challenging because both the inorganic and the biological moieties must be integrated in the same solid, while preserving their intrinsic activity. Combining an enzyme and a zeolite, for example, is complicated because the pores of the zeolite are too small to accommodate the enzyme and a covalent anchorage on the surface is often ineffective. Herein, we developed a new pathway to prepare a nanostructured hybrid catalyst built from glucose oxidase and TS-1 zeolite. Such hybrid material can catalyse the in situ biocatalytic formation of H₂O₂, which is subsequently used by the zeolite to trigger the epoxidation of allylic alcohol. Starting from an enzymatic solution and a suspension of zeolite nanocrystals, the hybrid catalyst is obtained in one step, using a continuous spray drying method. While enzymes are expectedly unable to resist the conditions used in spray drying (temperature, shear stress, etc.), we leverage on the preparation of "enzyme-polyelectrolyte complexes" (EPCs) to increase the enzyme stability. Interestingly, the use of EPCs also prevents enzyme leaching and appears to stabilize the enzyme against pH changes. We show that the one-pot preparation by spray drying gives access to hybrid chemoenzymatic heterogeneous catalysts with unprecedented performance in the targeted chemoenzymatic reaction. The bifunctional catalyst performs much better than the two catalysts operating as separate entities. We anticipate that this strategy could be used as an adaptable method to prepare other types of multifunctional materials starting from a library of functional nanobuilding blocks and biomolecules.

Advances in intrinsic self-healing polyurethanes and related composites

Fascinating and challenging, the development of repairable materials with long-lasting, sustainable and high-performance properties is a key-parameter to provide new advanced materials. To date, the concept of self-healing includes capsule-based healing systems, vascular healing systems, and intrinsic healing systems. Polyurethanes have emerged as a promising class of polymeric materials in this context due to their ease of synthesis and their outstanding properties. This review thereby focuses on the current research and developments in intrinsic self-healing polyurethanes and related composites. The chronological development of such advanced materials as well as the different strategies employed to confer living-like healing properties are discussed. Particular attention will be paid on chemical reactions utilized for self-healing purposes. Potential applications, challenges and future prospects in self-healing polyurethane fields are also provided.
