Spatiotemporal evolution and influencing factors of China's economic development performance under carbon emission constraints

BACKGROUND

China's high-quality economic development depends on achieving sustainable economic development, reaching peak carbon emissions, achieving carbon neutrality, and intensifying the development of an industrial and energy structure that saves resources and protects the environment. This study used the data envelopment analysis (DEA) model and the Malmquist productivity index to measure the economic development performance of mainland China under carbon emission constraints. Then, it described the spatiotemporal evolution of economic development performance and analyzed its influencing factors using the Tobit model.

RESULTS

The results revealed that there were obvious differences in the trends of the static and dynamic performance of economic development. On the one hand, the static performance of economic development exhibited an upward trend from 2008 to 2020. Its distribution characteristics were dominant in the higher and high-level areas. On the other hand, the dynamic performance had a downward trend from 2008 to 2016 and then an upward trend from 2016 to 2020. In most provinces, the dynamic performance was no longer constrained by technological progress but rather by scale efficiency. It was found that the main factors influencing economic development performance were urbanization level, energy efficiency, vegetation coverage, and foreign investment, while other factors had no significant influence.

CONCLUSIONS

This study suggests that China should improve its economic development performance by increasing the use of clean energy, promoting human-centered urbanization, increasing carbon absorption capacity, and absorbing more foreign capital in the future.

In Situ 1D Carbon Chain-Mail Catalyst Assembly for Stable Lithium-Sulfur Full Batteries

The main obstacles for the commercial application of Lithium-Sulfur (Li-S) full batteries are the large volume change during charging/discharging process, the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfide (LiPS), sluggish redox kinetics, and the indisciplinable dendritic Li growth. Especially the overused of metal Li leads to the low utilization of active Li, which seriously drags down the actual energy density of Li-S batteries. Herein, an efficient design of dual-functional CoSe electrocatalyst encapsulated in carbon chain-mail (CoSe@CCM) is employed as the host both for the cathode and anode regulation simultaneously. The carbon chain-mail constituted by carbon encapsulated layer cross-linking with carbon nanofibers protects CoSe from the corrosion of chemical reaction environment, ensuring the high activity of CoSe during the long-term cycles. The Li-S full battery using this carbon chain-mail catalyst with a lower negative/positive electrode capacity ratio (N/P < 2) displays a high areal capacity of 9.68 mAh cm-2 over 150 cycles at a higher sulfur loading of 10.67 mg cm-2 . Additionally, a pouch cell is stable for 80 cycles at a sulfur loading of 77.6 mg, showing the practicality feasibility of this design.

A Brain-Targeting NIR-II Ferroptosis System: Effective Visualization and Oncotherapy for Orthotopic Glioblastoma

Near-infrared-II (NIR-II) ferroptosis activators offer promising potentials in in vivo theranostics of deep tumors, such as glioma. However, most cases are nonvisual iron-based systems that are blind for in vivo precise theranostic study. Additionally, the iron species and their associated nonspecific activations might trigger undesired detrimental effects on normal cells. Considering gold (Au) is an essential cofactor for life and it can specifically bind to tumor cells, Au(I)-based NIR-II ferroptosis nanoparticles (TBTP-Au NPs) for brain-targeted orthotopic glioblastoma theranostics are innovatively constructed. It achieves the real-time visual monitoring of both the BBB penetration and the glioblastoma targeting processes. Moreover, it is first validated that the released TBTP-Au specifically activates the effective heme oxygenase-1-regulated ferroptosis of glioma cells to greatly extend the survival time of glioma-bearing mice. This new ferroptosis mechanism based on Au(I) may open a new way for the fabrication of advanced and high-specificity visual anticancer drugs for clinical trials.

Metabolome and transcriptome analyses of anthocyanin biosynthesis reveal key metabolites and candidate genes in purple wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is continuously subjected to genetic improvement to optimize grain quality. Purple wheat has recently gained attention because of its high anthocyanin and nutrient content. In this study, we performed an integrated transcriptome and metabolome analysis of the inbred wheat lines ZM152 (white wheat line) and ZM163 (purple wheat line) to elucidate molecular networks and identify potential genes regulating anthocyanin synthesis. A total of 564 metabolites were detected, of which 47 metabolite contents differed significantly between the two lines. Twenty-five flavonoids, including four anthocyanins, were significantly higher in purple wheat. High contents of cyanidin 3-rutinoside and malvidin 3-glucoside might contribute to the purple coloration of the wheat grains. Consistently, gene ontology and pathway enrichment analyses revealed that flavonoid and anthocyanin biosynthesis were mostly enriched, and the expression of anthocyanin structural genes was specifically upregulated in purple wheat lines, while transcription factors (TFs) were mostly downregulated in purple wheat lines. Especially, the correlation analysis showed the anthocyanin synthesis-related genes CHS (TraesCS2B02G048400) and UFGT (TraesCS7A02G155400) were likely regulated negatively by the TFs MYB4 (TraesCS1A02G268800, TraesCS1B02G279400), TT8 (TraesCS1D02G094200, TraesCS1B02G113100, and TraesCS1A02G102400), which thus could be considered important regulatory genes in the anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway of purple wheat lines. In summary, these results offer new insights into anthocyanin biosynthesis and accumulation of purple wheat, and provide very useful candidate genes for future colored wheat breeding.
